The tomb of Edward II became a place of pilgrimage in the 14th century and inspired the innovative cathedral building we treasure today. It is the only monarch’s tomb in the South West, one of only a few outside London and as such is of both historical and architectural significance. There is plenty for families to see and do, including the Whispering Gallery, the Giant Jigsaw and the Teddy Trail – not forgetting the chance to see where ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Dr. Who’ were filmed. The Cathedral Choir stems from that established by Henry VIII and is of a very high standard. The choir sings at the Sunday Eucharist and at most daily Evensongs during school term time.

Visit yesteryear and explore Victorian Gloucester Docks
A short walk from the City Centre you’ll find the historic docks, which in bygone years helped provide the region with food, fuel, textiles and building materials, as then it was the most inland port in England.
Complement your visit with a boat trip with commentary along the Gloucester & Sharpness canal onboard the ‘Little Dunkirk Ship’ Queen Boadicea II, or book for one of the longer themed cruises onboard King Arthur. King Arthur is also available for private hire, ideal for those special occasions.

Often referred to as the ‘Queen of Forests’’, the Forest of Dean is one of England’s few remaining ancient forests covering over 27,000 acres of woodland. Designated a National Forest Park in 1938, it is bordered by the River Severn and the River Wye, giving rise to its stunning landscapes and spectacular scenery. The seasonal changes showcase a vast array of flora and fauna with ever-changing colours. Bluebells in spring, lush green summers, spectacular autumns and the cool frosts of winter. With so much to see and do all year round, it’s the perfect place to relax and unwind.

For young and old, families and groups, the Forest of Dean has a wealth of visitor attractions to entertain and places of interest to admire. Take a trip into the magical and mysterious Puzzlewood, a journey down memory lane (track!) on the Dean Forest Railway, or visit the Dean Heritage Centre which tells the story of Forest life in times gone by. The Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), a unique river landscape stretching along the River Wye between Hereford and Chepstow, straddles three counties in England and Wales and includes parts of the Forest of Dean. This border territory reflects a turbulent history with Offa’s Dyke, Iron Age hillforts, the ruins of Tintern Abbey and fine Norman castles, Chepstow and Goodrich set within a spectacular landscape. One of the best attributes of the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley is that although it’s a world away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it is in fact a very easy location to reach. With links to all major motorways, the Forest of Dean is perfect for either a short break or a great day out.

What is the magic of Puzzlewood? Is it the maze of pathways winding between the moss covered rocks, the twisted roots of the Yew trees or the bridges and ‘lookouts’ you have to find on your way round? Puzzlewood is a unique and magical destination in the beautiful Forest of Dean. You can explore one mile of pathways winding through deep gulleys of moss covered rocks, over wooden bridges and through fantastic tree and rock formations, all set in 14 acres of ancient woodland. You will find Puzzlewood to be an enchanting place. It has an atmosphere quite unlike any other wood you have ever visited. JRR Tolkien is reputed to have taken his inspiration for the fabled forests of Middle Earth from Puzzlewood, and it is easy to see why. Once in Puzzlewood you will imagine that you are in a fantasy film, and that fantastic creatures lurk round every corner. Last year, Warner Bros discovered Puzzlewood! Jack the Giant Killer, scheduled for release March 2013, stars Ewan McGregor, Nicholas Hoult and Bill Nighy. It’s an adventure film, directed by Bryan Singer, which is a reworking of the classic story, Jack and the Beanstalk. Puzzlewood is also used regularly as a location for the BBC1 production of ‘Merlin’ and ‘Dr Who’.
N Operate throughout the Forest of Dean & Wye Valley Have you ever wondered how to survive in the great outdoors? Forest Bushcraft is a family run business located in the heart of the Forest of Dean. Their dedicated instructors provide a wealth of knowledge stemming from many years experience in teaching bushcraft skills. Courses are designed for beginners and the more experienced, covering a range of topics such as safe cutting techniques, primitive and modern fire lighting, foraging, game preparation, shelter building and more. Forest Bushcraft pride themselves on having the right combination of skills and resources to provide the ultimate bushcraft experience, allowing attendees to their courses to broaden their horizons and develop a greater appreciation of the ever changing natural world.
This year sees new courses in ‘Willow’, ‘Photography’ and ‘Cookery’ and watch out for the arrival of ‘The Vikings’ in June. Puzzlewood has three cottages on site as well as lots of farm animals, a willow maze, indoor mazes, indoor toddler track, a children’s playground, plenty of picnic tables and a café and gift shop.

Four aMazing visitor attractions all in one location at Symonds Yat West “This way!” A shout from Edward on the viewing platform to direct visitors into the aMazing Hedge Puzzle, a maze planted thirty five years ago by Edward and his brother Lindsay. That was to celebrate the Queens Silver Jubilee, hence its original name of Jubilee Maze. Back then of course it was literally just the maze itself, 50p for anyone taller than the brothers’ trousers! A museum was soon added, and it wasn’t long before the brothers realized that the fun in the maze was playing games like tag, or kiss n’ chase. Find your way then play! “Play brings families together, life can be too serious,” says Edward, “so we added a viewing platform so that people could help each other out - or not!”
An exciting addition to the activities available at the site is the new adventure activity Wye Valley Warfare – Laser Ops. Playable for small groups in the maze (as demonstrated by the Grandma in the picture), or bookable in advance for groups from ten to twenty people for the purposebuilt outdoor Close Quarter Battleground. Inspired by CQB ranges used by the SAS you play in a realistic and challenging combat arena, like the computer games – but for real! The brothers are perhaps most proud of the outstanding value of the joint tickets for a combination of the different attractions. This gives the opportunity for a family of four to visit the Maze, Butterfly Zoo and play a round of golf for only £25 – real family value for the day. You can make even more savings buying your ticket on-line!
Thirty five years later and the maze is growing ever stronger, and Edward and Lindsay have added the Butterfly Zoo as an exciting tropical world. “We wanted to make it a family visit, not just for children or butterfly nuts”, says Lindsay “We have created a shared experience so that nobody feels left out”. Visitors voted it the Midlands’ Best Small Attraction 2007 - 2008. At the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo you walk among the world’s most beautiful and delicate creatures, as they fly around you. It’s a safari where you explore to find answers which have baffled people for centuries. Why don’t butterflies grow? How long do they live? How do they survive? Be at home with the butterflies. The brothers have also installed a miniature golf course, a twelve-hole roman fantasy. It’s terrific fun and just as the Maze and Butterfly Zoo, it entertains the entire family. “You can see how important playing together is, it’s very rewarding to see how people laugh and celebrate each hole”, says Edward. “The golf is huge fun!” www.exploregloucestershire.co.uk - ‘The premier website for exploring Gloucestershire’

N On the A4151 gateway to Littledean
1! Page 36 An exhaustive history of felony and misdemeanor in the Forest’s former prison! Map Ref No.
Located at the gateway to the south of the Royal Forest of Dean, is Littledean Jail, a former house of correction, courthouse and police station, now privately owned and is home to the infamous ‘Crime through Time’ collection. Once you enter the jail, through where the old court house once stood, you’ll come face to face with an extraordinary Aladdin’s Cave of curiosities. This eclectic private collection touches on a great many sad, disturbing, quirky and at times taboo subject matters - so be warned! It’s an intriguing collection which includes many rare and historically significant exhibit items including the hangman’s noose that was used on the man they couldn’t hang - John ‘Babbacombe’ Lee. Also on display is the skull of the last man in Britain to be gibbeted, then hung, drawn and quartered! As you wander through the jail you’ll find wall to wall galleries of authentic and vintage signed photographs and ephemera from some of the world’s most notorious villains and criminals, and iconic celebrity figures slated and brought to heal by the tabloid newspapers. There are strange looking creatures on show too, including the products of Victorian taxidermy that were exhibited in this era. They include a six-legged piglet, a kitten with five legs, a three-eyed puppy with two mouths, an eight-legged lamb with one head and four ears and a ten foot long man-eating crocodile, and various other beasts of the jungle too. The Jail is also home to the largest single collection of Quadrophenia memorabilia in the world and includes the Vespa GS-Rally scooter that Sting (who played ‘Ace Face’) rode in the famous 1978 cult film, which was highly regarded as being one of the greatest British films of all times. Released in 1979, Quadrophenia is still to this day highly regarded as being one of the greatest British films of all time, and has a massive cult following worldwide. This controversial film, when originally released was panned by critics for its sex, bad language, violence, profanity and drug use throughout the film, which at the time were fairly uncommon in film (unlike today’s Film and TV industry that seemingly appear to revel and rely upon using as much sex, violence, drug use and bad language). We must stress that the Jail is NOT for the faint hearted, persons of a sensitive nature or easily offended. Children are allowed in but should be kept under the strict supervision of their parents or guardians at all times. Explore the Regency Spa town of Cheltenham, famous for its fine architecture, tree-lined Promenade, speciality shops, parks and gardens, numerous cafés, bars, bistros and restaurants and of course the internationally acclaimed festivals and events which occur throughout the year. The discovery of the Spa waters and the visit of King George III in 1790 transformed Cheltenham into a fashionable place ‘to be seen’ - a Regency hotspot! The heritage of that time left a huge impression on the town, and this can still be seen and admired in the magnificent buildings of Montpellier and Pittville. The Pump Rooms (pictured) are where the town’s spa waters can still be tasted and many fine concerts performed.

That’s ‘Everyman’ Entertainment! The Everyman Theatre reopened it doors back in autumn 2011 to reveal a beautifully restored and refurbished auditorium and smart new front of house areas which have met with positive comments and a steady stream of new theatre-goers. The new season opened with the magnificent ‘The Madness of George III’ which is now receiving rave reviews in the West End. Other highlights included Tracie Bennett’s performance in ‘End of the Rainbow’, Kneehigh Theatre’s ‘The Wild Bride’, ‘Journey’s End’ and sell-out performances of ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’. The Everyman’s pantomime – ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ was huge fun and broke all previous records, taking over £500,000 through the box office. This year opened in grand style with the wonderful Propeller Theatre bringing a double-bill – ‘Henry V’ and ‘The Winter’s Tale’ to the Everyman. The latter opened here prior to its national tour which was a huge honour for Cheltenham and got lots of national press coverage for the performances – and for the Everyman! Chief Executive Geoffrey Rowe has put together a very varied programme of performances for the coming months with something for everyone. February kicks-off with Caryl Churchill’s ‘Top Girls’ closely followed by anarchic puppet mayhem with ‘Avenue Q’, Alan Ayckbourne’s ‘Neighbourhood Watch’; ‘The King and I’; ‘Dreamboats and Petticoats’, Puccini operas; an ice-show; ‘The Diary of Anne Frank’ Horrible Histories, ‘The Gruffalo’ and ‘Equus’ among many. Still to come in 2012 are shows including the Everyman’s production of ‘The Glass Menagerie’; ‘Doctor in the House’, ‘Educating Rita’ and ‘Steptoe and Son’ by Kneehigh Theatre Company. This year’s pantomime we can reveal, is the Gloucestershire tale of a local boy made good as ‘Dick Whittington’ takes a long trip from the county all the way to London where he must defeat the evil King Rat, find his fortune and become Lord Mayor of London. There will be familiar faces amongst the cast along with some new characters. Expect thrills, spills, fights, talking animals, a sea monster and of course, lots and lots of laughter!

Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum- getting ready for a whole new look for 2013
A fascinating insight into the life and times of one of the world’s great composers
The redevelopment scheme, Building for a New Future, is the design and build of a new extension and the refurbishment of some existing galleries/public spaces.
Visit the birthplace of Gustav Holst, composer of The Planets and see the piano on which he composed much of his masterpiece. This elegant Regency terraced house shows the ‘upstairs-downstairs’ way of life in Victorian and Edwardian times and includes a working kitchen and children’s nursery. The museum tells the story of the man, his music and the creative and talented family into which he was born; including Holst’s great uncle, Theodor von Holst who became a major influence on the Pre-Raphaelite artists. A lively events programme including children’s activities can be found at www.holstmuseum.org.uk Please note that access is difficult for wheelchair users, due to the nature of the building.
CHELTENHAM ART GALLERY & MUSEUM
Building for a New Future will transform Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum by greatly increasing its exhibition/display and other facilities, which will allow improved access and enhanced opportunities for the use and interpretation of its locally, regionally, nationally and internationally important art and heritage collections. It will also enable the Art Gallery & Museum to become a major venue for national and international touring exhibitions.
42
Although the actual building will be closed due to the exciting new development, throughout 2012 there will be several events and exhibitions organised by Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum at various venues throughout Cheltenham.

PYO fruit and vegetables and great local produce at Primrose Vale Nestled on the edge of the Cotswold scarp between Cheltenham and Gloucester, Primrose Vale Farm Shop & PYO’s speciality is growing super fresh, seasonal fruit and vegetables picked daily from their fields. So whether you prefer robust winter roots, your quintessential soft summer fruits or the first cut of asparagus, there’s plenty grown at Primrose Vale to suit everyone’s tastes. Primrose Vale is famous for its Pick Your Own Fruit. The fields open from late May, through to October with some fifteen different crops for picking. Of course the most popular are the strawberries - growing on raised platforms the strawberries are easy to pick and there’s no slugs, bugs or mud!
Local produce is also very much in evidence, supporting other farmers and food producers as well as keeping food miles to a minimum. A visit to the shop will reassure you that Primrose Vale’s philosophy is to source from Gloucestershire and its surrounding counties whenever possible. There’s a specialist local cheese counter, locally reared meats, handmade cakes, preserves made with their own fruit, and much more besides. There’s a free play area on site, and refreshments are served throughout the summer. During the school holidays Primrose Vale organises fun family activities, including an Easter Egg Hunt, and the ever popular Halloween event, set to get even bigger in 2012!

The Cotswolds is one of the most beautiful and captivating areas of England, known and loved by people across the world. An area of warmth and character, where Cotswold stone walls, buildings, open skies, rolling grasslands, beech woods and picturesque villages make it a spectacular English landscape a landscape once experienced, never to be forgotten. There’s an array of attractions and activities to suit all ages, from child friendly farms and stunning country gardens to windsurfing, cycling and walking. During Medieval times the Cotswolds was well known throughout Europe as supplying excellent wool and much of the building and traditions that remain today are a result of this industry. The Cotswolds are full of historical gems that span the ages. From ancient Roman settlements to the former home to one of King Henry VIII’s wives (Katherine Parr, who did escape the chopping block!) at Sudeley Castle.

The Cotswolds boasts an abundance of beautiful gardens, but one of the finest must be at the National Trust property at Hidcote near Chipping Campden. The carefully designed gardens were made into exquisite rooms by the horticulturist Major Lawrence Johnston during the 20th century, with each possessing its own special character. A plethora of wildlife and nature can be found throughout the Cotswolds, but at Bourton-on-the-Water, Birdland Park and Gardens has the only group of King Penguins in England and Wales, and with many other exotic birds to see, it is well worth a visit.

The highly acclaimed Prinknash Bird and Deer Park - a must for the family
Painswick Rococo Gardens - a hidden gem on the edge of the Cotswolds
Prinknash Bird & Deer Park still remains in the top ‘must do’ attractions for families to visit in the Cotswolds.
The Rococo Garden, situated in a hidden 6 acre Cotswold valley, is the sole complete survivor from the brief early eighteenth century period of English Rococo Garden design. It was a time when homeowners were extravagantly displaying their wealth in a flamboyant layout of architectural follies connected by formal and informal vistas. The gardens were both magical and romantic and provided the perfect backdrop for parties. The restaurant serves delicious home made fayre, often with products grown in their extensive Kitchen Garden.
The Park is situated in stunning countryside with wonderful follies such as the famous Wendy House where the children can play, up to 40 peacocks display, golden pheasant dart and glint in the golden wood whilst tame fallow deer and waterfowl feed from your hand. Toffee and Treacle the miniature donkeys love to be petted and the Reindeer are always there to meet and greet, but it does not stop there. The Park hosts many bijou events that are just delightful for children such as the Mad Hatters Tea Party in April and Fairy World in May. Birthday parties can be booked in ‘Teal’ the Gypsy Caravan or ‘Eider’ for toddlers. Both are available all year.

Prinknash Bird & Deer Park also host a frighteningly great Halloween event in October and the spectacular Winter Wonderland in December, which was rated in the top ten attractions to visit in rural England by the Sunday Telegraph in 2010. This family run business offers everything that the big Zoos can’t, individuality, style, artistic beauty and a proximity to birds and animals that is not possible anywhere else. 2012 is the year to visit historic Sudeley Castle in Gloucestershire’s Cotswolds! Among the award-winning gardens and romantic ruins, Sudeley is hosting celebrations for the 500th anniversary of the birth of Queen Katherine Parr.
PHOTO: ANDREW GRANT REED
The sixth and final wife of King Henry VIII, Katherine was a remarkable woman for Tudor times: a published author and Regent for the kingdom while Henry was fighting in Europe. She is the only English Queen to
be buried at a private residence and her tomb can be seen in St Mary’s Chapel. A host of events celebrating her life are taking place throughout the season, including Tudor family fun days; literary and historical talks by renowned historians and Tudor experts; a new exhibition introduced by Dr David Starkey and the opportunity to see the Queen’s chambers inside the Castle. In addition to the Quincentenary celebrations, you can explore the gardens & exhibitions, taking in the Pheasantry and Children’s playground, with its giant play fort. Also available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays are Connoisseur Tours of the private family apartments (additional cost, restrictions apply).

JUNE 1 June ROBERT DOVER’S COTSWOLD OLIMPICK GAMES Traditional and rustic games dating back to 1612. 2pm - Games start 7.30pm DOVER HILL, CHIPPING CAMPDEN www.olimpickgames.co.uk
2012 sees the Olympic Games coming to Great Britain in July, but on a quiet hill in the north Cotswolds on Friday 1st June, there’s another, not so quite well known sporting spectacle taking place - and it’s celebrating a bit of a big milestone birthday too! Robert Dover’s Cotswold Olimpick Games will be 400 years old and to mark the occasion festivities start at 2pm, but Robert Dover will open the Games in front of the Castle at around 7.30pm. The evening brings traditional sporting events like the ‘Obstacle Race’, ‘The Five Mile Run’, ‘Tugof-War’ and the much underestimated sport of ‘Shin Kicking’. At 10.00pm the Scuttlebrook Queen lights the beacon and the fireworks illuminate the sky. Afterwards there is the Torchlight Procession from the hill into the Square in Chipping Campden where festivities continue into the night!
Fun for all ages at the 2012 Wychwood Music Festival on 8 - 10 June
