ROYAL TRIVIA In 1216 Henry III was crowned King of England in Gloucester Cathedral at the age of just nine years old. The nursery rhyme ‘Doctor Foster went to Gloucester’ was inspired by Edward I, who allegedly fell from his horse into a deep, muddy puddle during a visit to the city. He refused to visit ever again!

Gloucester combines its ancient Roman origins and rich historic past with a modern, bustling city. A focal point of the city is the beautiful Cathedral, which is steeped in over a thousand years of history. The annual Three Choirs Festival is hosted there this year and every third year in rotation with Worcester and Hereford Cathedrals. Its ‘Great East Window’ is one of the greatest examples of English medieval stained glass, while its cloisters have been famously featured in the Harry Potter films.

Photos: Top: The famous ‘Cloisters’ by David Unwin - Bottom: Gloucester Cathedral by Neil Wildin

Gloucester Cathedral’s knowledgeable and friendly Guides will lead you through 1000 years of history. Trace the architectural styles from Norman through Perpendicular to the present day where a team of stonemasons are still busy carving and casting. The extraordinary fan-vaulted medieval cloisters and Great East Window are national treasures and the Lady Chapel houses some of the finest Arts & Crafts glass in the country. The tomb of Edward II became a place of pilgrimage in the 14th century and inspired the innovative cathedral building we treasure today. It is the only monarch’s tomb in the South West, one of only a few outside London and as such is of both historical and architectural significance. There is plenty for families to see and do, including the Whispering Gallery, the Giant Jigsaw and the Teddy Trail – not forgetting the chance to see where ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Dr. Who’ were filmed.

Climb onboard heritage boats and discover what life was like living and working on a narrow boat. Plenty of handson displays and special events throughout the year: a perfect day out for the whole family. ENJOY AND EXPERIENCE THE MANY ACTIVITIES THE FOREST OF DEAN HAS TO OFFER Whether you wish to get wild with a bushcraft course, embark on a canoeing trip down the River Wye, cycle or walk the many woodland paths or swing and slide on an adventure course, there’s so many things to get involved with for all ages!

Often referred to as the ‘Queen of Forests’’, the Forest of Dean is one of England’s few remaining ancient forests covering over 27,000 acres of woodland. Designated a National Forest Park in 1938, it is bordered by the River Severn and the River Wye, giving rise to its stunning landscapes and spectacular scenery. The seasonal changes showcase a vast array of flora and fauna with ever-changing colours. Bluebells in spring, lush green summers, 18

spectacular autumns and the cool frosts of winter. With so much to see and do all year round it’s the perfect place to relax and unwind. For young and old, families and groups, the Forest of Dean has a wealth of visitor attractions to entertain and places of interest to admire. Take a trip into the magical and mysterious Puzzlewood, a journey down memory lane (track!) on the Dean Forest Railway, or visit the Dean Heritage Centre which tells the story of Forest life in times gone by.

As for activities - they’re in an abundance! Forest Bushcraft (see p. 25) offer a fascinating opportunity to get closer to the wildlife with fire making, foraging, shelter building and woodcraft. From our own experience we highly recommend it.

The Forest’s former prison transformed! Once you enter the jail, through where the old court house once stood, you’ll come face to face with an extraordinary Aladdin’s Cave of curiosities. It’s an intriguing collection which includes many rare and historically significant exhibit items including the hangman’s noose that was used on the man they couldn’t hang - John ‘Babbacombe’ Lee. Also on display is the skull of the last man in Britain to be gibbeted, then hung, drawn and quartered! As you wander through the jail you’ll find wall to wall galleries of authentic and vintage signed photographs and ephemera from some of the world’s most notorious villains and criminals, and iconic celebrity figures slated and brought to heal by the tabloid newspapers. There are strange looking creatures on show too, including the products of Victorian taxidermy that were exhibited in this era. They include a sixlegged piglet, a kitten with five legs, a three-eyed puppy with two mouths, an eight-legged lamb with one head and four ears and a ten foot long maneating crocodile, and various other beasts of the jungle too. The Jail is also home to the largest single collection of Quadrophenia memorabilia in the world and includes the Vespa GS-Rally scooter that Sting (who played ‘Ace Face’) rode in the famous 1978 cult film, which was highly regarded as being one of the greatest British films of all times. That’s Everyman Entertainment ! The Everyman Theatre reopened it doors back in autumn 2011 to reveal a beautifully restored and refurbished auditorium and smart new front of house areas which have met with positive comments and a steady stream of new theatre-goers over the last year. Audiences have again been treated to a varied and exciting season of shows, and 2013 offers much more of the same – from top musicals to comedy one-nighters from the top names on the circuit; ballet; opera; top drama and hilarious plays to keep you on the edge of your seats or roaring with laughter. The Everyman Theatre Company is delighted to present the classic novel of Cotswold life - Cider With Rosie - at the end of March. Theatregoers may remember

that they staged The Glass Menagerie in June last year – their first in-house professional play in over fifteen years. Cider With Rosie is based on Laurie Lee’s novel about growing up in the Stroud village of Slad, and adapted for the stage by Nick Darke. It stars Susie Blake... well known for her TV appearances in Mrs Brown’s Boys; Wild At Heart and Victoria Wood’s As Seen On TV. The play will also

tour to theatres in Salisbury, Croydon and Guildford. Other highlights include another visit to the Everyman by Propeller - the all-male Shakespeare company who receive huge critical acclaim everywhere they go. From the UK to Australia and the U.S. They present Twelfth Night and The Taming of the Shrew in April. The big musical this season is High Society. Cole Porter’s

timeless classic that stars Michael Praed and Carolyn Pickles amongst others. English Touring Opera take centre stage with Cosi fan tutte (Mozart); Simon Boccanegra (Verdi) and The Siege of Calais (Donizetti) in May. Lots of laughs coming up with shows from Chris Addison; Russell Kane and Richard Herring. Finally, no year is complete without an action-packed, joke-filled pantomime and Aladdin promises all that and much much more from November 29th!
