Gloucester combines its ancient origins and a rich historic past with a modern, bustling city. The heart of the City is home to an excellent shopping centre, museums, wonderful restaurants and pubs. Nearby lies the beautiful Cathedral, with its ‘Great East Window’ and ‘The Cloisters’ - the most complete example in England. A short walk from the centre takes you to the famous Docks, with its Victorian warehouses, serving what was once the most inland port in Britain. The City Museum and Art Gallery’s fascinating displays are housed in a fine Victorian Building in the heart of the City, containing many items of national and international importance. Among the spectacular collection are archaeological finds, fine and decorative arts and natural history specimens representing Gloucester’s rich heritage.
larger than seems possible, and constantly surprising.
A visit to the museum will tell you so much about the early history of Gloucester. As well as fascinating Roman and Mediaeval displays there are dinosaurs, fossils, paintings, clocks, furniture, the stunning Birdlip Mirror and lots more.
Nature in Art is the world’s only museum dedicated to all kinds of art inspired by nature. Displays embrace two and three-dimensional work in all mediums and styles from across the world, spanning 1500 years. So typically, in addition to a temporary exhibition, you’ll see watercolour landscapes, contemporary glass, the Flemish masters, modern abstract interpretations, bronze sculpture and even some exotic oriental treasures. With all this variety you’re sure to find something appealing, and you’ll make some discoveries too!
Gloucester Folk Museum is one of the oldest-established museums dedicated to social history. The collections have been drawn together mainly through gifts from the entire county of Gloucestershire, and represent one of the most fascinating collections of such material.
At Nature in Art you have the opportunity to meet and talk to an artist whilst they demonstrate their skills. Artists from across the world work at the museum during all opening hours between February and November. So you may encounter painting or almost anything from woodcarving to textile art.
Set in Tudor timber-framed buildings, one of which was traditionally associated with the final night of the Protestant martyr, Bishop Hooper, the Folk Museum is a complex of rooms on different levels with a unique ambience that makes it a popular sight for locals and visitors. Behind the chocolate-box facade is a museum (with a garden to the rear) which is both
With various activities like brass-rubbing and an outdoor play area, there’s plenty for children to do. There’s also a tranquil sculpture garden to explore and a coffee shop serving homemade cakes. The museum also offers a variety of short art courses and other events throughout the year - contact them for details!

From Victorian heritage to locally grown organic food served up on a plate! In the heart of Gloucester you’ll find the historic docks, which in bygone years helped provide the region with food fuel, textiles and building materials, as then it was the most inland port in England. Now it’s home to the National Waterways Museum and is the ideal place to discover what life was like living, working and moving on Britain’s inland waterways, from the 18th century to the present day, with plenty of hands on interactive fun for everyone. Four completely redesigned galleries tell the fascinating story of the waterways with lots to see and do for all the family, including our new ecology gallery. Boat trips are available along the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal and River Severn or relax in the newly opened Coots Cafe. The museum caters for groups of all sizes. Educational visits and hospitality packages are also available.
day out for the whole family. Children are well catered for as there’s lots of farm animals to look at and plenty of activities throughout the year. The farm is also ideally placed for trailer rides to watch the Severn Bore. For some time by the river there’s no better place than The Wharf House, conveniently located for both Cheltenham and Gloucester, opposite Telford’s bridge near the junction of the A40/A417, on the western edge of Gloucester. You can explore the riverside and the recently restored Canal Basin, learn all about the canal and the local area from the Civil War to today in the free visitor centre and replenish your energies with lunch or dinner from the a la carte menu or just a tea or coffee and cakes in the morning or afternoon if the weather is good you can even enjoy the locally sourced produce on the terrace overlooking the river, all in the satisfaction of knowing that all the profits go back to charity to maintain the canal.
On the A40 just outside Gloucester you’ll find Over Farm Market. The large farm shop sells a wide selection of fresh locally grown seasonal fruit and vegetables, pickles and preserves. There is also a bakery, cheese counter and a meat counter. The shop also sells seasonal wares including Christmas trees. During the summer you can pick your own strawberries, raspberries and blackberries, so it’s also a great

Leisure, entertainment and lots of fun! There is a wealth of things to see and do in Gloucester. The Gloucester Guildhall is a lively centre for entertainment, boasting two cinema screens, a concert hall, theatre, galleries, workshops and ‘The Place’ cafe-bar. So if it’s live music, comedy, theatre or dance that you’re looking for - look no further. GL1, Gloucester’s leisure centre provides an excellent range of leisure and sporting activities and its large hall also plays host to both sporting events and live entertainment. The leisure centre operates on a ‘pay and play’ basis and is open throughout the year. Feel like something more exhilarating? At one venue on Bristol Road you’ll find not one, but two adrenaline pumping experiences with either the thrills and spills at JDR Karting or entrance yourself in a game or two at Darklight Lasertag. After your action-packed fun and adventure, wind down and refresh yourself in the cafeteria, where you can even watch other drivers enjoying a few circuits of the track. Gloucester boasts one of the longest artificial ski slopes in the country. The Ski and Snowboard Centre at Robinswood Hill caters for all ages and standards. You can even go climbing at The Warehouse in Parliament Street. Developed as Britain’s premier rock climbing centre it provides a safety conscious experience for both novices and experienced climbers.

Too energetic? How about a nice sedate cruise along the River Severn or Sharpness Canal or a trip to the multi-screen cinema. Gloucester offers something for everyone. Nearby there are many places to relax and unwind but one of the best is a hidden gem - Café René. Located down one of the old alleyways of Greyfriars, this authentic watering hole offers a wide range of culinary delights including a Sunday Carvery, as well as a vast selection of ales, ciders and wine.
Photograph courtesy of Markus Hoffman
Café René also plays a major part in the annual, week long ‘Rhythm and Blues Festival’, from 26 July to 3 August, and also holds many other musical events throughout the year. Without doubt a true taste of Gloucester!

Kings Walk in the heart of Gloucester provides a huge variety of shops catering for many different types of customer. Throughout the year it’s a focal point for many different events in Gloucester, including the Christmas ice rink and various markets.
Overview of Gloucester’s regeneration In October 2006, The Gloucester Heritage Urban Regeneration Company Ltd (GHURC) launched a £1 billion programme of regeneration for one of England’s oldest and most historic cities. In March 2008, nearly £200 million of private investment has been invested into Gloucester with a further £350 million in the pipeline. Once complete, the programme will have delivered over 2000 new jobs, 3000 new homes, a high proportion affordable and wide-ranging office, retail and leisure opportunities. The 10-year plan is based on the regeneration of seven key sites within the City centre. Nicknamed the ‘Magnificent Seven’, these are: Gloucester Docks, Gloucester Quays, The Railway Triangle, King’s Square, Greyfriars, Blackfriars/ Westgate Quay and The Canal Corridor. Alongside these projects, GHURC is developing an integrated public realm and public art strategy linking key developments. At Gloucester Quays, the new £250 million designer outlet centre will open in Spring 2008.

The main streets in the city centre are laid out in a cross, giving rise to Northgate, Eastgate, Southgate and Westgate Streets. This area is pedestrianised and makes the city centre both easy to navigate and very safe. Although there’s the usual high street stores and a selection of specialist shops, the city manages to retain some of its market town characteristics.

The Speech House built in 1676 was originally a hunting lodge for Charles II. It soon became known as the administrative heart of the Forest. Today it’s a hotel providing excellent food and accommodation. Also operating from Speech House is something completely different - llama trekking. These wonderful placid animals enjoy their forest walks and have no trouble carrying all the equipment and supplies for an unusual day out in the Royal Forest of Dean.
The Cyril Hart Arboretum, situated near to the Speech House Hotel, is the perfect place to experience the vibrant Autumn colours.

From a hidden Victorian village to mysterious woodland walks in the Royal Forest of Dean!
MY
STE RIOU S PUZZLE
On the fringes of the Royal Forest of Dean lies the old market town of Newent. Remarkably, the Victorian influence is still evident today in The Shambles Victorian Village. From Church Street you can step through a doorway in time to an original Victorian Village complete with cottages, houses, alleyways, streets, courtyards, shops and workshops. Housing one of the largest collections of everyday Victoriana it forms a realistic museum of the past. Children love climbing up to the attics and down into the musty cellars. It’s very exciting for youngsters to guess what’s round the next corner and very nostalgic for the not so young, who can enjoy the ‘how it used to be’ feeling. Fascinating and educational.
WOOD
Take a wander through the many forest walks in Spring and you may stumble upon a wooded glade full of bluebells.
Puzzle Wood is a magical and mysterious place to visit - a weird yet spectacular experience. A visit to Puzzle Wood is a must for those with a vivid imagination - young and old alike. It has often been said that it was inspirational to J. R. R. Tolkien when writing ‘The Lord of the Rings’. Puzzle Wood consists of fourteen acres of amazing scenery and a mile of pathways forming a very unusual maze. It also has an indoor wood maze and a number of farm animals. Over in the south west of the Forest of Dean, at Aylburton, on the Lydney Park Estate, you’ll come across Taurus Crafts, an inspirational place to visit with great works of art and crafts created through the various studios and workshops. There’s also a wholefood restaurant and organic market garden open daily. Throughout the year Taurus Crafts have many workshops and events including a ‘Fire Sculpture’ to celebrate the end of summer on 30 August, and a festive Christmas market where local craftsmen sell their seasonal wares and gifts, and fine foods produced locally are on sale too.

Royal Forest of Dean n Located at the gateway to the south of the Royal Forest of Dean, is Littledean Jail, a former house of correction, courthouse and police station, now privately owned and is home to the infamous ‘Crime through Time’ collection. Once you enter the jail, through where the old court house once stood, you’ll come face to face with an extraordinary Aladdin’s Cave of curiosities. This eclectic private collection touches on a great many sad, disturbing, quirky and at times taboo subject matters - so be warned! It’s an intriguing collection which includes many rare and historically significant exhibit items including the hangman’s noose that was used on the man they couldn’t hang - John ‘Babbacombe’ Lee. The skull remains of the last man in Britain to be gibbetted, then hung, drawn and quartered! As you wander through the jail you’ll find wall to wall galleries of authentic and vintage signed photographs and ephemera from some of the world’s most notorious villains and criminals, and iconic celebrity figures slated and brought to heal by the tabloid newspapers. There are strange looking creatures on show too, including the products of Victorian taxidermy that were exhibited in this era. They include a six-legged piglet, a kitten with five legs, a three-eyed puppy with two mouths, an eight-legged lamb with one head and four ears and a ten foot long maneating crocodile and various other beasts of the jungle too. This year the Jail is also home to the largest single collection of Quadrophenia memorabilia in the world and includes the Vespa GS-Rally scooter that Sting (who played ‘Ace Face’) rode in the famous 1978 cult film, which was highly regarded as being one of the greatest British films of all times. We must stress that the Jail is NOT for the faint hearted, or for persons of a sensitive nature. Children are allowed in but should be kept under the strict supervision by the parents or guardians at all times. While you’re in Littledean why not pop into The Belfry Hotel where a warm ‘Forest’ welcome awaits you. The Belfry offers en-suite accommodation, good food served in the main bar or in the tastefully furnished restaurant. Traditional ales, lagers, ciders and full range of spirits and bottled beer are available, as are a children’s room, children’s play area, background music system and satellite television. Littledean House Hotel which would have gone a full refurbishment by mid 2008, has fifteen bedrooms available to stay out during your ventures in the Forest, and is also a great place to stop off and replenish either in the bar, restaurant or in the garden which boasts its very own ‘Wellingtonia’. Of historical significance the hotel has a fine intricately carved Jacobean fireplace.

You’ll find information about many places to visit, places to eat and accommodation and lots more!
Explore Gloucestershire’s guide to the best events for 2008... Gloucestershire is blessed with some of the best events and festivals in the UK. The county has some traditional and sometimes crazy activities, such as running after a whole cheese over a cliff (well it’s a very steep incline!) at Coopers Hill, or kicking severn bales of straw out of someone’s shin (literally) as part of the sporting activities in Robert Dover’s Olimpick Games at Chipping Campden, and in Tetbury you’ll see feats of endurance with contestants running up a street with a woolsack on their back!!! Less mad-cap events include two magnificent air shows, two sumptuous food and drink festivals, two medieval festivals and several sporting spectacles, and not forgetting the world re-nowned music and literature festivals held in Cheltenham. Here is a list of some of the major events, festivals and fayres happening in 2008, but for full listings and information of these and other events visit www.exploregloucestershire.co.uk

Explore the Regency Spa town of Cheltenham, famous for its fine Georgian architecture, tree-lined Promenade, speciality shops and internationally acclaimed festivals and events. The discovery of the Spa waters and the visit of George III in 1790 transformed Cheltenham into a fashionable place to be seen - a Regency hotspot! The heritage of those times left a huge impression on the town, still to be admired in the magnificent buildings of Montpellier and Pittville. Winner of countless ‘Britain in Bloom’ awards, the beautiful gardens and floral displays of Cheltenham, have led it to be described as ‘the Garden town of England’. Throughout the year Cheltenham plays host to some of the best festivals in the UK. It begins in Spring with the National Hunt Festival, always guaranteeing a wild time. Then there’s the Jazz, Science, Music and Literature events (see page 31). In the height of summer the Cheltenham College plays host to a selection of Gloucestershire County Cricket Club’s matches - this year Cheltenham entertains the counties of Nottinghamshire, Worcestershire, Leicestershire, Sussex and Hampshire - a true cricketing indulgence indeed! 26
Cheltenham Art Gallery & Museum possesses an internationally significant collection relating to the Arts and Crafts Movement, recognised as outstanding by the award of Designated Museum status in 1998. Particularly strong in furniture, the collection also includes silver, textiles, ceramics and paintings, much of which was made by Cotswold craftsmen inspired by William Morris. Cheltenham is the most complete Regency town in Britain and the museum houses a wide range of objects associated with its history. There is also a gallery devoted to one of the town’s famous sons, Edward Wilson, who died with Captain Scott on their way back from the South Pole in 1912. Dutch and Flemish paintings, donated by the Baron de Ferrieres in 1898, are of particular interest. A fine collection of oriental ceramics has been assembled from the many pieces brought back to Cheltenham by retiring civil servants who had served in the Far East. There are additional displays of archaeological treasures from the Cotswolds and a series of historical galleries depicting life from the Middle Ages to the 20th century, as well as a programme of special exhibitions changing regularly throughout the year.

The Everyman Theatre
All year round entertainment!
The Everyman Theatre had its grand opening in 1891 with a performance by prominent actress Lily Langtry and has continued to entertain, delight and enthral audiences ever since.
Cheltenham Festivals hosts four internationally renowned festivals every year with Jazz in April, Science in June, Music in July and Literature in October. Each Festival boasts exciting, diverse and popular programmes which bring the biggest cultural names to town. This year look out for a rare UK appearance from sultry diva Eartha Kitt at the Jazz Festival, an archaeological experience with Tony Robinson at the Science Festival, unique world premieres at the Music Festival and the very brightest stars from the literati at the Literature Festival. Whether you enjoy classical music in elegant regency surroundings, scientific experiments in Imperial gardens or lapping up Literature in the Town Hall, Cheltenham Festivals has a programme for all to enjoy.
Originally the New Theatre and Opera House, the theatre was designed by Frank Matcham, the greatest architect of his time. It contains one of Matcham’s finest surviving interiors and its auditorium is largely intact. Many of theatre’s greats have taken centre stage at the Everyman, from Ellen Terry and HB Irving to Charlie Chaplin, Fred Karno and John Gielgud and it is still home to the many stars that visit with touring shows as well as a vital resource to the community. The Everyman showcases a huge range of performances from drama to musicals, comedy, children’s shows and of course the most anticipated and exciting event on the calendar, the pantomime! It strives to produce entertainment that is attractive and welcoming to the entire population of Gloucestershire and the surrounding regions. The Everyman Studio Theatre presents a unique programme of events supporting new writing and the groundbreaking work of Gloucestershire’s theatre companies and the ReachOut team work across the county helping children and adults explore their creative potential through the arts in a range of community and educational initiatives. This ranges from working in schools and youth centres to organising an annual carnival, supporting students with a disability devise a performance to training for teachers in delivering drama, training for Equity actors and GCSE, A Level and SATS workshops.
From the 20 - 22 June, Cheltenham plays host to the Cheltenham Food and Drink Festival at Montpellier Gardens. With many stalls, demonstrations and activities, this is guaranteed to be a great weekend for all to enjoy! Adults can also have a fantastic time being entertained by some of the best UK stand up comedians at various venues around Cheltenham with Howlers Comedy Club. Children will have a brilliant time at Ballyhoo, with it’s great death slide, side winder slides and ball pits. The grown ups can relax in the café whilst the kids enjoy the fabulous play barn.
Last, but by no means least, EveryTots and EveryKid sessions provide an opportunity for children and young people to learn new skills, make new friends and discover hidden talents and the successful Youth Theatre regularly perform shows and take performances to the Edinburgh Festival.

A visit to the shop will reassure you that this is very much the case as you will quickly realise their philosophy is to source from Gloucestershire and it’s surrounding counties whenever possible.

Two National Trust gems in the heart of the Cotswolds!
The Cotswolds
There are lots of exciting things to do at Chedworth Roman Villa and Lodge Park this season!
A fascinating region of the UK and an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’
STU NNI NG
At Chedworth Roman Villa you will discover the ruins of a 1700 year old Roman villa, complete with real mosaics, under-floor heating and a Water Shrine. You can meet Romans (12 - 13 April, 14 - 15 June, 13 - 14 September), including Gladiators (30 - 31 August) and Legionaries (26 - 27 July) and find out what life was like when the Romans ruled Britain. Lodge Park is a 17th century “Grandstand” with spectacular open Cotswold parkland surrounding it. It was built as a place to watch Deerhounds racing, and you can still witness this (14 September). We will also host ‘English Civil War’ battles (24 - 25 August) and encampments (25 - 26 May), as well as various highwaymen and pirate ruffians (21 - 22 June). If you like Shakespeare then come and see a “Winter’s Tale” (9 August). There’s also loads of room to run around outside and for kids to let off steam.
COTSW OLD SCENERY
One of the most beautiful and captivating areas of England, known and loved by people across the world. An area of warmth and character, where Cotswold stone walls, buildings, open skies, rolling grasslands, beech woods and picturesque villages make it a spectacular English landscape - a landscape once experienced, never to be forgotten.
We always have trails over the school holidays, and you can discover about local wildlife during Hidden Nature Week (24 May to 1 June).
Something for everyone! You’ll find an abundance of attractions and activities to suit all ages, from child friendly farms and stunning country gardens to windsurfing, fishing, cycling and walking. If you fancy a round of golf while enjoying the stunning Cotswolds scenery, then Shipton 9 Hole Pay and Play is the ideal place to go. Club hire and refreshments are available.
We're used to looking after families ... children always do what they're told with us! Give your kids a thrill this Summer at Chedworth Roman Villa and Lodge Park, near Northleach. Gladiators, highwaymen, Roman soldiers, deerhounds, wenches and executioners will excite and delight you! There's always a children's trail to do as well. For a full programme of events look at our website, or give us a call to find out more! English history, steam heritage and farmyard fun near Winchcombe Within a short walking distance from Winchcombe you’re find the Sudeley Castle. Few historic houses can match Sudeley Castle’s long, curious and fascinating history. Spanning a thousand years the Castle has changed hands over a dozen times, has more than once been a Royal residence and has played host to at least six Kings and Queens of England. The Castle is perhaps best known as the former palace of Queen Katherine Parr, who is buried in St. Mary’s Church within the grounds.
Heading northwards from Winchcombe you’ll find the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway station at Toddington. Take a trip on one of the steam trains to Cheltenham station while taking in the breathtaking Cotswold views. Throughout the year, GWR hold many events including ‘Steam & Diesel Galas’, ‘Transport Nostalgia Days’ and during the weekend of 11 - 12 October, there’s the not to be missed, ‘Autumn Steam & Vintage Rally’. There’s also a special ‘Childrens Weekend’ on the 27 - 28 September, and later on in the year festive fun can be enjoyed on-board the ‘Santa Specials’ operating throughout December!
Today Sudeley is the home of Lord and Lady Ashcombe, Henry and Mollie Dent-Brocklehurst and their respective families. Sudeley’s award winning gardens are a delight throughout the seasons - from the Queens Garden, billowing with old fashioned roses, to the Elizabethan style Knot Garden. A variety of exhibitions provide a fascinating insight into the life of the Castle and its famous inhabitants. From curious artefacts collected by the Victorian chatelaine of Sudeley to a textile collection featuring re-discovered embroidery and textiles dating from the 17th century to the present day. The Children’s play area has been refurbished for 2008 and includes a fabulous wooden fort, giant slide and more.
Cotswold Farm Park, located near Guiting Power (which is about 5 miles north west of Winchcombe), is one of the best places in the Cotswolds to take children of all ages. There’s a comprehensive collection of rare breed British farm animals, lambs and goat kids to bottle feed, piglets to stroke, seasonal farming demonstrations including lambing, shearing and milking, lots of fun children’s activities, two mile wildlife walk, picnic area, gift shop and Cotswold Kitchen.

RAF Fairford
sponsored by
Great family day out Under 16s go FREE 90 Years of the Royal Air Force
www.airtattoo.com From the roars of lions at Cotswold Wildlife Park to the roaring jet fighters flying over Fairford! Held annually each July at RAF Fairford, Gloucestershire, the Royal International Air Tattoo, the world’s largest military airshow, has gained the well-earned reputation as one of the UK’s top outdoor family events. Among the highlights the 2008 show will be the UK flying debut by the US Air Force’s most advanced jet fighter, the F-22A Raptor plus displays by legendary World War Two aircraft such as the Spitfire, Lancaster and Hurricane. There will also be the opportunity to marvel at a variety of special tributes - both in the air and on the ground – as the Air Tattoo prepares to stage official celebrations marking the 90th anniversary of the Royal Air Force, including an explosive demonstration highlighting the hi-tech capabilities of RAF aircraft currently in service around the globe. Also taking to the skies will be six of the world’s greatest aerobatic display teams, including the legendary Red Arrows, who will provide a breath-taking theatrical feast of close formation, precision flying. But there’s far more to enjoy at the Air Tattoo than just the fabulous flying. On the ground, youngsters can meet the pilots and sit in the aircraft and enjoy the criticallyacclaimed Tri@RIAT attraction, which brings together a
feast of entertaining and interactive activities specifically designed to inspire and excite young minds. Add to this a rousing outdoor evening concert and free entry for accompanied under-16s, and it’s clear that the Royal International Air Tattoo, held in support of the Royal Air Force Charitable Trust, offers unbeatable value for money. This year the Cotswold Wildlife Park opens the new ‘Madagascar’ enclosure - designed to immerse visitors in the fauna and wildlife of this unique Island and with many lemurs and birds roaming free, it’s a must see and do experience! The park also provides everything for a full family day out, and is home to a fascinating and varied collection of mammals, reptiles, birds and invertebrates from all over the world. There is a narrow gauge railway which the children love and a huge adventure playground for when the adults need a rest. A cafeteria provides both hot and cold food and refreshments, or spectacular gardens provide the perfect backdrop for a picnic. A large gift shop has something for everyone.
