Gloucester Cathedral’s knowledgeable and friendly Guides will lead you through 1000 years of history. Trace the architectural styles from Norman through Perpendicular to the present day where a team of stonemasons are still busy carving and casting. The extraordinary fan-vaulted medieval cloisters and Great East Window are national treasures and the Lady Chapel houses some of the finest Arts & Crafts glass in the country. The tomb of Edward II became a place of pilgrimage in the 14th century and inspired the innovative cathedral building we treasure today. It is the only monarch’s tomb in the South West, one of only a few outside London and as such is of both historical and architectural significance. There is plenty for families to see and do, including the Whispering Gallery, the Giant Jigsaw and the Teddy Trail – not forgetting the chance to see where ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Dr. Who’ were filmed.

Visit yesteryear and explore Gloucester Docks A short walk from the City Centre you’ll find the historic docks, which in bygone years helped provide the region with food, fuel, textiles and building materials to the most inland port in England. Visit the Gloucester Waterways Museum, run by the Canal & River Trust, and discover the fascinating history of this once bustling Victorian port. Climb onboard heritage boats and discover what life was like living and working on a narrow boat. Plenty of hands-on displays and special events throughout the year: a perfect day out for the whole family. The Museum gift shop is a real treasure trove, stocking books, maps, model boats, prints and traditional painted ware, plus general giftware. Complement your visit with a boat trip with commentary along the Gloucester & Sharpness canal onboard the ‘Little Dunkirk Ship’ Queen Boadicea II, or book for one of the longer themed cruises onboard King Arthur. King Arthur is also available for private hire, ideal for those special occasions. The perfect family day out in Gloucester The Gloucester City Museum and the Gloucester Folk Museum have a fantastically packed programme of events, and 2014 is no exception! Hot off the heals of the British Museum the Gloucester City Museum welcomes the reconstructed head of Richard III this March, with the hugely anticipated ‘Richard III, Duke of Gloucester’ exhibition, running for just 12 days until 30th March. The Forest of Dean and Wye Valley

Events Galore in the Forest of Dean Peppa Pig and Thomas the Tank Engine will all be visiting the Forest this year. There’s also two new festivals; ‘Forest Activities Festival’ on 27 April in the grounds of Speech House and the ‘Festival in the Forest’ on the weekend of the 14 & 15 June at Whitemead Forest Park.

Often referred to as the ‘Queen of Forests’’, the Forest of Dean is one of England’s few remaining ancient forests covering over 27,000 acres of woodland. Designated a National Forest Park in 1938, it is bordered by the River Severn and the River Wye, giving rise to its stunning landscapes and spectacular scenery. The seasonal changes showcase a vast array of flora and fauna with ever-changing colours. Bluebells in spring, lush green summers, 18

spectacular autumns and the cool frosts of winter. With so much to see and do all year round it’s the perfect place to relax and unwind. For young and old, families and groups, the Forest of Dean has a wealth of visitor attractions to entertain and places of interest to admire. Take a trip into the magical and mysterious Puzzlewood, a journey down memory lane (track!) on the Dean Forest Railway, or visit the Dean Heritage Centre which tells the story of Forest life in times gone by.

The forest of Dean & Wye Valley

A Magical Day Out in the Forest of Dean Puzzlewood is a unique and magical destination in the beautiful Forest of Dean. It’s a popular TV and film location used by the BBC for ‘Merlin’, ‘Dr Who’, ‘Atlantis’, ‘Wizards vs Aliens’ as well as Warners Bros for ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’. You can explore a mile of pathways winding through deep gulleys of mossy rocks, over wooden bridges and through fantastic tree and rock formations. It’s an enchanting place and has an atmosphere quite unlike any other wood. JRR Tolkien is reputed to have taken his inspiration for the fabled forests of Middle Earth from Puzzlewood, and it is easy to see why. The ‘Things to Find Challenge’ encourages you to explore all corners of the woods. Also on site are farm animals, a willow maze, indoor and outdoor play areas, cafe & gift shop and cottages for rent. The Forest’s former prison transformed! Once you enter the jail, through where the old court house once stood, you’ll come face to face with an extraordinary Aladdin’s Cave of curiosities. It’s an intriguing collection which includes many rare and historically significant exhibit items including the hangman’s noose that was used on the man they couldn’t hang - John ‘Babbacombe’ Lee. Also on display is the skull of the last man in Britain to be gibbeted, then hung, drawn and quartered! As you wander through the jail you’ll find wall to wall galleries of authentic and vintage signed photographs and ephemera from some of the world’s most notorious villains and criminals, and iconic celebrity figures slated and brought to heal by the tabloid newspapers. There are strange looking creatures on show too, including the products of Victorian taxidermy that were exhibited in this era. They include a sixlegged piglet, a kitten with five legs, a three-eyed puppy with two mouths, an eight-legged lamb with one head and four ears and a ten foot long maneating crocodile, and various other beasts of the jungle too. The Jail is also home to the largest single collection of Quadrophenia memorabilia in the world and includes the Vespa GS-Rally scooter that Sting (who played ‘Ace Face’) rode in the famous 1978 cult film, which was highly regarded as being one of the greatest British films of all times.
