ARTIST: KRYA “SLOWLY BUT SURELY SHE BLOOMS”

ART “Having the opportunity to create a public piece of art for the community of North Park was so exciting. I wanted to create a mural that played with portraiture and organic forms with a hint of abstraction/ collage elements. Lately I have been using a vibrant color palette, which I believe brings joy, and energy to the space in which it resides. I wanted my work to evoke curiosity, but also bring aesthetic pleasure. Read the full Q&A at explorenorthpark.com/ qa-with-artist-kyrapalmer Location: 3120 University Ave. @kyraaart

LIVING NORTH PARK THE STORY OF STEVE & PATRICIA One of the great things about being a part of such a vibrant neighborhood is business owners become incredibly involved in the community, even living in North Park throughout the years. Steve and Patricia Billings are a true testament to this, having operated local bar U-31 for 11 years and recently opening the brand new brewpub The Original 40 Brewing Company. Living down the street, Steve and Patricia have the unbeatable luxury of a 5 minute commute to work!

HISTORY During the 1950s, more than 100,000 people flocked to North Park every year to watch the Toyland Parade. Many floats featured children playing accordions, like this group passing what is now Tamarindo Restaurant in the historic Newman-I.O.O.F. Building at University Avenue and Kansas Street. The San Diego Zoo often participated in the Toyland Parade. In 1958, the zoo provided a camel and costumed handlers to the delight of the crowd.

SAVE THE DATE: DECEMBER 8TH TOYLAND PARADE A tradition unlike any other, the Toyland Parade will be celebrating its 56th year in North Park. Join us, December 8th 2019, to unwrap some holiday joy as the community comes together to put on a magical display of festive cheer! FOR UP-TODATE INFORMATION VISIT EXPLORENORTHPARK.COM
