WAT PHRA KAEW

The wholesalers and traders market is a must-visit place for tourists who can literally shop till drop. The 35-acre area is home for 8000 stalls and on a typical weekend, nearly 200,000 visitors goes to purchase the goods on offer. The access to the market is quite easy by Skytrain (BTS) or subway (MRT).

Wat Phra Kaew, a most important temple in Thailand, gleams and glitters with most colour and glory that its earthbound foundations appear barely ready to resist the celestial pull. Architecturally fantastic, the temple complex is also the religious core of Thai Buddhism and the monarchy, symbolically united in the country’s most holy image, the Emerald Buddha.

FLOATING MARKET

The spectacular Grand Palace was consecrated in 1782 and was the home of the Thai King, Royal Court and the Government administration seat for over 150 years. The beauty of architecture and intricate details highlights the creativity and craftsmanship of the Thai people. The 94.5 hectare ground covers over 100 buildings that represent 200 years of royal history and architectural experimentation.

The most famous of the ﬂoating markets – the one seen photographed many times, is the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. It has featured in a classic James Bond chase scene many years ago. The variety of goods everything from rattan balls, traditional puppets and fresh fruits to embroidered handbags, noodle soup and wide brimmed bamboo hats are impressive and undeniably photogenic.

JIM THOMPSON HOUSE

This jungly compound is that the former home of the eponymous American silk entrepreneur and art collector. Born in Delaware in 1906, Thompson concisely served in the workplace of Strategic Services (the forerunner of the CIA) in Thailand during WWII. In the shadow of surrounding trees, the house’s inconspicuous façade belies a tastefully decked entry foyer, itself an unconventional architectural feature in traditional Thai houses and a preamble to Jim Thompson’s signature East-meets-West style permeating throughout the house.

A Thai saying goes, "If you haven't tasted Khao Soi or seen the view from Doi Suthep, you haven't been to Chiang Mai." This regal mountain overlooks the city from the northwest, providing commanding views from its summit. Aside from its dominating presence on the horizon, Doi Suthep is one of the most sacred temples of the country, in the north and is also a national park.

The concept of the park is to provide visitors with a thrilling experience similar to being out in the wilderness at night. Apart from touring the three animal zones, there are range of activities from hand-feeding wild animals and petting tiger cubs to a laser light show and ‘dancing’ fountain designed to entertain throughout the visit.

Wat Chedi Luang's massive chedi (pagoda) was built sometime between 1385 and 1402, during the reign of King Saen Muang Ma, 7th ruler of the Mengrai dynasty. The chedi measured 60 meters across at the square base and 80 meters tall but was damaged during an earthquake in 1545 and the chedi’s height reduced to nearly half of its original size, but is yet an impressive structure.

Having secured their names in the Guinness World Record, the elephants at the Mae Sa Elephant Camp are no ordinary beasts. Apart from going about their daily routine of bathing, eating, sleeping and just being domesticated elephants, these extremely intelligent animals have been trained to paint, play football, dance and perform a string of talent shows that will change the way you think about Thai elephants.

Chiang Mai Zoo covers 200 acres of land in the foothills of Doi Suthep and provide excellent views of the city in addition to its fascinating wildlife exhibits. Nearly 400 different species of animal are kept at the Zoo including elephants, tigers, chimpanzees, hippopotami and rhinoceroses. The zoo also features some outstanding special attractions such as the walk-through aviary, a fascinating freshwater aquarium and the zoo's stars - Chuang Chuang and Lin Hui, two young pandas who were sent as goodwill ambassadors from China in 2003.

NONG NOOCH TROPICAL BOTANICAL GARDEN

The garden is set in a 2.4 square kilometer area and ideal place for a day trip. It is more like a theme park and orchid nurseries houses more than 670 native species. An interesting feature is the skywalk, a shaded, 1.1km elevated walkway that takes through the topiary garden, European garden, tropical palm garden, butterﬂy hill and Stonehenge garden.

WAT PHRA KHAO YAI (“BIG BUDDHA HILL”)

This Big Buddha – the largest in the region – is the highlight of Wat Phra Yai, a temple built in the 1940s when Pattaya was nothing more than a ﬁshing village. The Big Buddha is extremely popular with tour groups who love to see the intricate design of the statue and the temple complex, but it is also revered by local people who come to pray at the temple.

A favourite stop for the tourists to Samut Songkhram is the pristine sandbar at the mouth of the Mae Klong River: Don Hoi Lot, named for the abundant indigenous “Hoi Lot” or razor clams. The 3 kilometers by 5 kilometers stretch spans two zones: Don Nok lies at the mouth of Ao Mae Klong, accessible by boat, and Don Nai is located on the beach of the Chuchi village in Tambon Bang Chakreng and on the beach of the Bang Bo village in Tambon Bang Kaeo, accessible by car. This afternoon-only floating market is located near a temple, Wat Amphawan Chetiyaram. On Fridays and weekends, the Amphawa Canal brims with boats loaded with drinks like O-Liang (Thai iced black coffee) and food such as fried sea mussels, noodles, and sweets. Bank-side wheelbarrows also offer goods for sale. Visitors can explore the market, tasting the local food, as well as hire a boat at night to watch as pretty fireflies light up the air.
