WELCOME I’ve always thought that most of us try too hard to get our homes perfect and keep them that way, when a little bit of spontaneity and fun might make it more comfortable to live in. Years ago I read an interview with a renowned interiors expert who assured readers that, no matter how little creativity they felt they possessed, they had only to look around and decide if they felt ‘at home’ where they lived. That’s the philosophy we follow at Home Ideas as each issue we bring you the behind-the-scenes stories of extraordinary homes together with new products, expert advice and clever ideas. This little online sample offers a taste of all these things and we hope it provides the inspiration you’re after to make your house the place you feel at home.

STAYINGafloat AGAINST ALL ODDS, DREW MUIRHEAD MANAGED TO BUILD HIS DREAM WATERSIDE HOME – NOW HE’S BATTLING TO HANG ON TO IT.

STORY MARK VENDER PHOTOGRAPHY DAVID JAMES STYLING KATHRYN BORGLUND

10

www.homeideasmagazine.com.au

ON THE BANKS OF THE HAWKESBURY RIVER, IN THE EXCLUSIVE RESIDENTIAL ENCLAVE OF COTTAGE POINT, STANDS A TESTAMENT TO ONE MAN’S VISION AND UNWAVERING OPTIMISM. For Drew Muirhead, a property developer

with over 25 years’ experience, this was to be the ultimate dream home. Instead, due to overruns in time and budget, it threatened to become the ultimate nightmare. And although the house is now finished in spectacular style, the struggle isn’t over. REBUILDING A LIFE The seed of the project was planted over eight years ago, when this father of two boys – Mackenzie, 15, and Jackson, 10 – went through a divorce, losing much of what he owned in the process. “I wanted to get my life back for me and my kids,” Drew says. “I built this house as a comeback.” He already had the perfect site: a stunning waterside block in Cottage Point. A suburb of just 53 residential properties, Cottage Point is only 45 minutes from the centre of Sydney but feels half a world away, thanks to the tranquil setting of the Hawkesbury River and the Ku-Ring-Gai Chase

ABOVE The loggia at the front of the lounge room is the perfect place to look out at nature, or perch with a book while the breeze comes through the louvres. LEFT Well-placed lighting helps accentuate the texture of the sandstone. This suspension light is the Nikau from Mondo Luce.

National Park. Apart from a boatshed, pontoon, and sandstone barbecue area, Drew’s block was vacant. It was here that he set about creating the best house he had ever built. He began by searching for an architect who could capture his vision. “I wanted it to be super high luxe, but I wanted it to feel like a home,” Drew explains. “It’s supposed to bring in the nature, and have a Balinese resort feel so you’re relaxed all the time.” As he talked to various people in the industry, one name kept coming up: Richard Cole. Drew approached him and together they “hatched a plan”. This plan encompassed five bedrooms, four bathrooms, an entertaining deck with pool and spa, a 100m2 courtyard where the boys could run and play, and a lounge room that converts into a nightclub. While this sounds ambitious, based on the costings and the funds Drew was counting on from the sale of other assets, it was achievable. That was, until the problems began …

ABOVE “We had to have a backyard on the first level so the boys and the dogs could run in and out of the house,” Drew explains. “The whole house opens up, so basically you can just run from the outside to the inside. It’s such a great flow.” RIGHT The combination of sandstone, Merbau wood and the colours of nature that come in through the extensive windows create a natural palette in the lounge room, and a feeling of being at one with the elements. “You really feel like you’re in the mountains, or on the sea,” Drew says.

A VISIT WITH TANYA AND STEPHEN

Renovating an interesting, solidly structured old house seemed a good move for Melbourne couple Stephen and Tanya. STORY GABRIELLE BAXTER PHOTOGRAPHY NICOLE ENGLAND STYLING JAYNE REID

An impressive picture, Two Heads, by artist Graham Fransella dominates the spacious lounge room, which has carpet set into an industrial-looking concrete floor that’s heated from below.

17

Clearly, the Mendals’ quest for an abode to suit their family’s lifestyle in a new century was extremely successful but the experience proved to be a steep learning curve – to say the least. The ultramodern look of this stunning family home entirely belies its age and origins. Amazingly, it was built in the 1960s and on first sighting it Tanya described it as “yellow brick with a flat roof – and arches everywhere”! “But its ‘bones’ were good,” she continues. “It’s solid double-brick and the architect said it was too well built to pull down. Naively, perhaps, we originally thought the renovation process would be simpler than it was. We got a bit swept up in it I guess.” After six weeks, however, the builder actually asked: “Why don’t we just pull it down?” Tanya and Stephen’s response was that

18

www.homeideasmagazine.com.au

they wouldn’t have designed it the way they had if they’d started from scratch. And, as the builder himself also pointed out, they don’t build things now the way they used to back then – so if they had begun again it wouldn’t be the same at all. And the way it is they have exactly what they’d hoped for.

EASY LIVING “We wanted something quite industriallooking both inside and out – but not cold,” says Tanya, so they put timber on the ceilings instead of on the floor – which is concrete – and did the same with panelling on the walls. The wood they used is spotted gum, which softens it beautifully, giving the place a most unusual feel, and creating an attractive effect in the spacious open-plan living area.

A VISIT WITH TANYA AND STEPHEN

“Naively, perhaps, we originally thought the renovation process would be simpler than it was!”

They particularly wanted the interior to flow out to the garden, so all the glass doors open right back and the concrete floors inside extend to meet the same outside in an alfresco sitting area, and on from there to the pool. “It was something of a rabbit warren inside,” Tanya admits, “so we knocked down walls and changed rooms around. We also

COLOUR CODE Rather than blocks of colour, the overall palette is very much a backdrop from white through shades of grey to charcoal – “like the veins in the marble on the island bench,” says Tanya – so names of specific hues and brands don’t really apply, but this selection from Haymes Paints offers inspiration. took out all the archways and squared them off.” The architect was Jade Vidal from Bower Architecture and he created the entrance hallway as a gallery to display some of the couple’s extensive collection of artworks. From the front door you can look straight down the length of the house to the pool. “Even the pool was ‘renovated’,” Tanya says. “It was originally kidney-shaped, which was common in those days, but we made it more angular.” Needless to say, the Mendals’ daughters – Gaby, 15, and Asha, 13 – absolutely love the house and the pool is in constant use, especially when their friends come. They all hang out together in the kids’ domain upstairs which has an exterior spiral staircase leading from a huge deck. “They come down it for a swim – then go back up,” Tanya says, “but we almost didn’t have that due to budget constraints. Then we realised that unless it was there, the kids wouldn’t use the deck – so back it went!” And it obviously works a treat.

Contributing considerably to the overall impression of comfort and elegance in this home are the furnishings, in a subtle yet sumptuous way, and this is not by chance. With the exception of a sofa from their previous house, everything came from Globe West, an Australian design and importing company owned by Stephen and his brother,

A VISIT WITH TANYA AND STEPHEN

Alan. The firm specialises in modern design with clean lines in ranges of pieces that combine simplicity, functionality and versatility, and – as can be seen here – the result is not only uniquely Australian, it’s also very easy on the eye. Another outstanding element that contributes to the unique ambience is the artwork prominently on display, and Tanya gives her husband sole credit for this. “Stephen loves art,” she states, “and he has taught us all to appreciate beautiful works of all kinds, so that’s certainly his influence.

A VISIT WITH TANYA AND STEPHEN

BEHIND THE SCENES BIGGEST CHALLENGES:

“The original structure was probably the biggest, obviously, but the outdoor area was another because we didn’t give it much thought until we’d got the house itself close to finished. Keeping it within budget was another one as well... “

LUCKIEST FIND: “Our architect – Jade Vidal from Bower Architecture! We got along fine and we’re now firm friends. We’d definitely use him for this type of project – if we ever do it again of course.” FAVOURITE PLACE: “The backyard! I love the look of the spiral staircase – which we almost didn’t have, due to budget constraints...” SPECIAL PIECES: “The Calacatta marble on the island bench is my favourite thing in the whole house! We were warned by friends not to use it as it can be hard work to maintain but, in fact, I find it very easy to look after. It’s quite strongly veined and we actually went and chose the slab ourselves, so that we had that grain.”

Style

WITH A CONSCIENCE ECO CHIC IS FAST BECOMING THE GO-TO PLACE FOR STYLISH AND ECO-FRIENDLY FURNITURE AND HOMEWARES. HAVING JUST TURNED THREE IN MARCH, CO-FOUNDERS PAULA BRECKMAN AND CRIS BUCKNALL ARE DELIGHTED WITH THE RESPONSE TO THE BUSINESS SO FAR. HERE, EMMA FREEMAN CHATS TO THEM ABOUT THEIR DESIGN PHILOSOPHY AND THEIR FAVOURITE PROJECTS.

THREE WORDS TO DESCRIBE YOUR PROJECTS? Sexy, Stylish…Sustainable.

WHAT INSPIRES YOUR DESIGNS? Paula is really inspired by trends in fashion and music, while I, Cris, follow art and movies. All fields affect each other and we watch different areas and different places around the world for inspiration and trends. Sometimes we might pick up on a trend and run with it, tweaking it to our own ends, other times we avoid it like the plague! Our aim is to be original and unique.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST SUCCESS? Our popularity with other designers. They are at the forefront of design and really appreciate our unique collection. We don’t design for mainstream audiences. We create products for style hunters. Not a day goes by that we don’t get a new enquiry from a designer or architect, which is really validating.

WHAT ABOUT YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGE? Shipping! Australia is a very large country and to try to service all areas can make shipping difficult. Often it is the driver who has the face-to-face interaction with our clients, and yet they are not our employees. I think in the next few years, courier companies will see the boom in online shopping and become more competitive both in price and service.

26

www.homeideasmagazine.com.au

IN PROFILE

IS THERE ONE PROJECT THAT YOU’RE PARTICULARLY PROUD OF? We did an entire beach house full of eco-friendly furniture. Our client was not only concerned about the environment but everything had to be completely non-toxic and free of chemicals. It was a huge challenge but we learned a lot.

WHAT MATERIALS DO YOU PREFER TO WORK WITH? We have a real fondness for fabric, hence our decision to design our own line of fabric and put it on everything from lights to tables!

WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER FURNITURE COMPANIES? We love home furnishings, but feel bad about the impact they can have on the environment. We don't want to sacrifice style, so why should our customers? If you associate buying green furniture with rough-hewn tables and hopsack blankets, then think again! Our online furniture shop is a little less Birkenstock and a little more Balenciaga! When you buy eco-friendly furniture from Eco Chic, it is a sensitive purchase, but sexy at the same time. It is high time people were offered quality furniture that is environmentally responsible. We want people to instantly say ‘it’s gorgeous!’ and then feel good about the fact that it's green furniture and a planet friendly product.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP THREE HOME STYLING TIPS? Mix and match – don’t overplay a theme or material. Pair a leather sofa with a glass coffee table, velvet armchairs, a Persian rug, a vintage cabinet or an ethnic throw. Too much of one element can produce a sterile result. But do make sure there is a theme that connects everything – whether it’s a colour, a fabric or an era – otherwise things look mixed-up and messy. Use books and art – a room without books is without a soul, and a house without art is hardly a home. Frame your favourite photos, children’s drawings, memento menus and keep an eye out for op-shop finds or car boot treasures. Hang, stack, pile, organise and arrange to give your home depth and character. Be clever with colour – select a favourite cushion, picture, rug – any hero piece you love – and build your room around that. Pick out a colour from that piece and echo it elsewhere in the room. For example, rich emerald embroidery on a cushion could inspire an emerald feature wall (or ceiling!). Further add to the look by layering with colours from the same colour family. Be bold, banish boring and add colour to your space!

ABOUT ECO CHIC Eco Chic is the brain child of Cris Bucknall and Paula Breckman who found there were several large gaps in the furniture market that just weren’t being filled. With a pressing demand for eco-friendly furniture by consumers, an increasing number of people shopping from home and regional customers left without access to chic furniture stores, Cris and Paula decided to step in and fill the gap. The eclectic style of Eco Chic designs is reflective of both Cris and Paula’s international backgrounds. Cris started Eco Chic as a subsidiary to her interior design company but before that, she worked in Hollywood as a set designer, moved onto Fiji and finally ended up in Australia designing for hotels and resorts. Paula started out quite differently, studying art and architecture before travelling around the world as a music promoter. It was only once she settled back in Australia, that she began to dabble in the world of interior design. Both women are determined to get the message out to people that being eco-friendly isn’t as simple as just using eco products and it definitely doesn’t mean your home has to look drab. "Eco’s not just about using eco products, but also using recycled materials, ‘upcycling’ and ‘reloving’ old furniture, trying to source things locally to reduce the carbon footprint, buying products that help keep traditional methods and villages going and using sustainable products like bamboo, that don’t promote deforestation or endanger animal species," explain Paula and Cris. By selling products online that emanate style and confidence, without the harsh effects on the environment, Paula and Cris are successfully meeting the desires of a growing eco-conscious market. With a range of furniture that has everything from modern to vintage styles, they are fast on their way to becoming a well-known name in the industry. HOW TO DECORATE AN APARTMENT Make the most of your open-plan space with these clever ideas. • Open and organised. Keep your space clutter-free. • Keep things simple. A small room looks even smaller when it’s filled with contrasting colours, patterns and layers. Stick to a single flowing scheme throughout the space to make the apartment seem much bigger and more open. • Define your rooms. An open-plan apartment doesn’t offer much in the way of privacy but with screens and storage units you can create separate ‘rooms’. • Invest in versatile furniture. In today’s world, space is a hot commodity. So it’s no surprise modern furniture has evolved to have multiple functions. Whether it’s a dining table on castors for easy mobility or a lounge that doubles as a storage container, it’s worth shopping around for pieces that suit your lifestyle. • Utilise dead space. Instead of leaving empty space behind a lounge chair that doesn’t sit against a wall, put a narrow table with drawers or a small desk there. Not only will it look aesthetically-pleasing but it can provide extra storage. • Sweat the small stuff. Add smaller storage items like a coat hook or umbrella stand to ensure your little bits and pieces don’t become clutter.

MAKE IT WORK

KITCHENS FOR COOKS A KITCHEN THAT IS STREAMLINED AND FUNCTIONAL IS A JOY TO WORK IN AND MAKES EVERYDAY LIFE MUCH EASIER NOT ONLY FOR THE PRINCIPAL COOK, BUT FOR EVERY MEMBER OF THE FAMILY. THE FOLLOWING IDEAS WILL HELP YOU PLAN THE DESIGN AND PLACEMENT OF WORK AREAS AND GIVE YOUR KITCHEN A PROFESSIONAL EDGE. Plan your kitchen around the classic ‘working triangle’ as far as possible. This means keeping the distances between the stove, sink and fridge as close as possible. If you’re a keen cook, minimising the trips back and forth will make a big difference. Accessibility is the key to a functional kitchen. Arrange storage so your most-used utensils and pots and pans are close at hand and easy to find without scrabbling around in drawers and cupboards. Allow as much bench space as you can. Professional cooks say generous worktops are one of the most important features they look for, so consider deeper than usual benchtops and plenty of counter space.

Don’t plan for things you won’t use, even if it’s the latest must-have – will a built-in coffee-maker be worth the extra space it takes up? Do you really need an extra-large fridge and walk-in pantry if you shop often? Buy appliances to suit the way you live and cook. Do the research and don’t be tempted by an array of programs and functions you will probably never use, and may never learn to use efficiently. Where possible, good lighting should be planned from the outset rather than afterthought. Task lighting should illuminate the work surface from above so preparation areas aren’t in shadow.

PROFESSIONAL TIP Mealtimes are usually hectic times in the average household and most of us home cooks are so focused on food preparation we wouldn’t think to turn the extractor fan on until after the cooktop heats up. It’s a small thing, but professional cooks recommend switching it on 10 minutes before cooking starts so it’s working at optimum strength when it’s needed. That little extra running time means it will be far more efficient, sucking cooking smells and steam away quickly and making the kitchen, and open-plan living areas If the budget especially, allows, opt for a muchmore rangehood with a pleasant places. good extraction It’s worth a tip system rather than just a filter. worth trying next time you’re cooking.

LOOKING SHARP GIVE YOUR BATHROOM A GLAM NEW LOOK WITH SOPHISTICATED SHADES AND STYLISH FITTINGS. COMPILED BY LAUREN BROOMHAM

Is your bathroom looking tired and drab? Wallpaper is an elegant way to revamp this space, and is easy to apply and remove when you’re ready for a change. In this stunning bathroom by interior designer Greg Natale, a classic Florence Broadhurst wallpaper has been chosen to create a glamorous Hollywood regency feel, with the black and white combination also evoking the refinement of this era. A simple pedestal sink and round mirror add to the effect, letting the wallpaper shine.

WALL TO WALL PAINT JOB Replacing dated tiles can be an expensive exercise, so the Australian Flood Company has created a new tile and laminate paint that makes it simple to re-colour ceramic tiles, even in the shower stall. Available in 54 colours plus crisp white, it requires no primer and only two top coats and contains anti-mould inhibitors to provide resistant to mould in wet areas. It’s stocked nationally at Masters, Mitre 10, Paint Place and 3D plus other independent paint specialists and retails for $45.95 a litre and $82.95 for two litres.

ACCESSORIES 50 SHADES OF GREY A fresh coat of paint instantly updates any room and the latest trend for the bathroom are soft shades of grey and charcoal. Teamed with crisp white fittings and stainless steel accessories, it delivers a chic, contemporary feel. Try it out yourself with this Haymes Colour Expressions low sheen acrylic paint in Element, $47.95 for 2 litres.

POISED FOR SUCCESS Many renovators consider hanging wallpaper a challenging task, but Bunnings Warehouse has made it easy with their new Poise range. With a quick ‘Paste the Wall’ application that means you apply the paste directly to the wall, and easy removal thanks to the range coming off in one piece, it’s ideal for bathroom spaces. Shown here is the Sherwood wallpaper in grey, $59.95 for a 52cm by 10m roll.

Spring

IN BLOOM SPRING COMES SOFTLY INTO OUR HOMES THIS MONTH BRINGING A FEELING OF SERENITY AND UNDERSTATED LUXURY – BUT THERE ARE PLENTY OF BRIGHT TOUCHES TO SHARE OUR EXUBERANT SIDE TOO.

Forget any notions of prim and proper, this season’s florals are definitely not the shy and retiring types. These bright, overblown blooms are brimming with life and just what you need to add colour and excitement to a room that’s begging for a wake-up.

Spring florals work best with a dramatic background, so don’t hold back. Pictured here are the Miki, Emmi and Maura cushions from Bluebellgray’s Blossom collection.

MAKE FLORALS WORK

Bella cushion from Bluebellgray.

Great for curtain making or upholstery, the James Summer fabric from Bluebellgray is as appealing as it is colourful.

Mix it up. Provide balance and contrast by combining large, medium and small patterns. Use fabrics with different textures for added interest. Repeat, repeat. Draw various elements together and create flow-through by repeating patterns and colours – just be careful not to overdo it! Be bold. Today’s florals work best in strong colours and big patterns – the trick is to temper them with plenty of space and light.

Betty cushion from Bluebellgray.

Continuous colour. Mix a variety of patterns and sizes so long as you connect them all with a common colour or two. Pick one strong shade that appears in every design.

COLOURS OF SPRING Decorators are chameleons at heart: serene and elegant giving way to bold and boisterous as the mood takes us, and spring is the ideal excuse to mix things up. The season is reflected in these colours from Nippon Paints, available at Bunnings.
