aylesford in country Victoria has a European feel courtesy of the many Italians and Swiss migrants who established themselves in the town during its formative gold rush years. It’s hardly surprising then, that when Anna Meirelles and her Italian husband Miguel were deciding on where to buy a home in the country for weekends and extended getaways, Daylesford instantly came to mind. Renowned for its mineral springs, history and charm, it was love at first sight for the Meirelles family who decided this picturesque country town would be the perfect place to look for a property they could relax in and also rent out to other holidaymakers. “We happened to find this property on the internet, so I decided to go up to Daylesford the next day to see it and I absolutely loved it,” Anna says. “It was an unloved dark house that needed a lot of attention, but I could see how it would turn out.”
A
COMPLETE TRANSFORMATION
Originally a miner’s cottage, Anna and Miguel remodelled the bones of the house to become a spacious five bedroom, three bathroom property, with an open-plan kitchen and dining area, separate lounge room with open fireplace, and a billiards room. The original house featured dark timber panelling and ceilings, with a complementary colour scheme that had its heyday in the 1980s or
LEFT: The eighteenth-century English dresser to the left of the hallway houses several French oyster serving plates. PREVIOUS PAGE: Before the couple had settled the house, Anna had already started planning the design of the rooms, purchasing two sofas for the living room from an ex-rental property store in Melbourne. Anna and Miguel loved the 1960s-style low-slung sofas so much they used the fabric colour as the basis for the house’s entire colour scheme. The cushions on the sofas have been custom made using fabric from Westbury Fabrics, which has showrooms in Sydney and Melbourne.

The large eighteenth-century French oak dining table from the Loire Valley is one of the main features of the kitchen/dining area, and is surrounded by 10 rush seat chairs from the area of Normandy. The wrought-iron chandelier above the table incorporates a casserole dish, with the idea being that dried flowers go into it.

1990s, making the interior look very outdated. With a bit of renovation experience behind them, the couple didn’t extend the house but remodelled it by demolishing walls, widening windows to provide more natural light, and converting the large double garage into a billiard room, a laundry and an extra bathroom. “We installed these beautiful big French doors in the new building, formerly the garage, and made an entrance connecting the main house with the new billiard room structure.” An unused powder room was removed to make way for a hallway that would connect the two buildings while at the same time extending the main house. A new kitchen was installed and the internal bathroom, which like much of the house had been dark, was remodelled with white walls, vanity and a spacious bath. For the rest of the house a good lick of Dulux’s Antique White USA was applied, instantly transforming the interiors. “It has really gone from being a dark and depressing house to one that’s really light and has a lovely feel to it,” Anna says. “It came up really well.” While the interiors underwent a transformative makeover, the garden proved to be just as much of a challenge not least because of its size, an extensive 3000 square metres. “I think when it had been originally planted, the garden would have been really lovely,” Anna says. “But since then it had been let go. It was completely overgrown, so we worked like busy bees, hauling so much plant material out.” Once much of the garden had

ANNA’S DECORATING TIPS Go with what you like. I think many people go with what’s in fashion rather than what they prefer, but I always go for what I like. I also opt for simplicity. I have added colour in the quilts but have only used a neutral palette throughout the house, like Antique White USA by Dulux on most of the walls. A neutral background with interest added in the form of antiques or art is the best marriage between the bones of a room and its furnishings. Add personality and character with a large mirror or a beautiful lamp. been removed, the family started replanting, with a hedge of camellias and winter roses providing some colour all year round. An edible garden was also installed on the northern side and features a range of fruit trees including apple, pear, orange, lime and lemon, with herbs scattered throughout so guests can step out from the deck and pick fresh rosemary whenever they like.
FROM
ROME WITH LOVE
Anna and Miguel’s story is the stuff fairytales are made of. A young Australian woman travels to Italy to sample la dolce vita, meets a handsome Italian man who is an antiques restorer in Florence, they marry and live a beautiful life in Australia. Bringing his passion and expertise for antiques to Melbourne, Miguel opened Miguel Meirelles Antiques in Malvern, specialising in a range of styles, from French Provincial to English Country furniture. While Anna says she designed their country weekender with no particular style in mind, Miguel’s beautiful antiques did play an important factor in how the rooms would look. “Although the house lends itself to a kind of country look because of its setting, I did design the house in such a way as to accommodate Miguel’s furniture,” Anna explains. With a selection of charming furniture at their disposal, the couple furnished the house with a number of eye-catching pieces. One of a number of favourites was found during one of Miguel’s frequent buying trips to France – a rare dining table from the Loire Valley which dates to about 1780. Anna says she loves the quality design and craftsmanship of antique furniture, which is rare in a time of mass-market items. “If antiques are used in the right way they can add so much character to a home,” she says.

FINDING
THE RIGHT NAME
When choosing a name for a property or an estate, many people opt for a title that pays respects to its past. Miguel and Anna, who had a number of good debates on choosing the right name for their muchloved Daylesford property, wanted a name that would reflect not only the house’s peaceful atmosphere but the town’s as well. The couple, who both speak Italian, wanted an Italian word or term that people who didn’t speak Italian would know, or at least know how to say. They came up with adagio, which means at ease, a slow pace. “You do actually feel at ease when you’re in the house because the setting is so peaceful and quiet, and we designed the interiors to be quite peaceful too,” Anna says. The words Casa Adagio are now invitingly written on a signpost at the front of the property, which marks the long pebble drive to the beautiful house beyond. While Anna and Miguel often stay at their Daylesford home on weekends, Casa Adagio has been designed with guests in mind. The luxury rental is not only situated in one of the most popular tourist towns in Victoria but features a number of personal touches to make a guest’s stay here all the more comfortable. “We both love music,” Anna says, “so we put one of Miguel’s iPods with a large collection of music in the living room because we thought that was important for people who were going to stay here.” When Anna comes to stay with Miguel and their three children at Casa

Adagio, there are a number of activities she loves doing, one of which is going for long walks through the forest at the back of the house. “The next town is two kilometres away and is called Hepburn Springs, so you can walk on one of the bush tracks to the town or into Daylesford with its charming little cafes and antique shops,” Anna says. While getting back to reality is hard after any holiday, Anna admits that when she’s at Casa Adagio she never wants to leave. “I knew that I would always enjoy going up there, I just never knew how much I would love it,” she says. “I still walk around and think I can’t believe we own this.”

Clever, hideaway space-savers helped turn this small kitchen into a celebration of good cooking and generous entertaining.
The open design and use of space savers such as slide-away chopping boards and the platter rack have turned what could have been a pokey kitchen into a very generous heart of the home.

hen Irene and her partner undertook a large-scale renovation of their 142-year-old worker’s cottage in Rozelle, Sydney, one of the key things for them was putting in a beautiful kitchen. “What we had before was an old, old, old galley kitchen that you couldn’t do anything in – it was just really impractical,” recalls Irene. “With the new one we wanted space.”
LEAN CUCINA Unfortunately, space was in short supply. The original home had just one storey and one bedroom. Although they added two levels, for the kitchen they only had 12.2 square metres to work with. “We were very much limited with centimetres,” confirms Irene, laughing. “Fifty millimetres was a huge thing for us!” The couple looked around for designers who could assist with the challenging project and came across Dominique McAdam from Provincial Kitchens. They clicked immediately. “No one else could compare,” says Irene simply. Dominique helped plan the room, incorporating clever design elements: ‘Magic Corner’ fold-out pot storage in the hard-to-reach corners of the room, a pantry under the staircase, and pull-out chopping boards and a platter rack. All of these save valuable space. They also look fantastic. This was especially important for Irene and her partner who see the kitchen not simply as a functional area, but as the heart of the home. “We really wanted to make sure that we brought that out in the style and materials and everything that we used to create it,” she says. Ornaments such as the mantel above

The flow between kitchen, dining and outdoor areas makes entertaining a joy.
KITCHEN ESSENTIALS the stove and the cupboard handles create an elegant, provincial atmosphere without ever being over the top. Similarly, the Carrara marble benchtops introduce natural texture and a classic feel without attention-seeking.
TIME TO SPLURGE Two pieces warrant special mention. First there’s the cast-iron AGA stove, with four ovens and six burners and a weight of 250kg. “It’s a heavy beast,” Irene says, before adding, “It’s the pride and joy, that’s for sure.” It includes conventional, fan-forced and slow-roasting ovens and a grill, and it fits in with the country-style cooking that the couple like. “It’s a great piece in the kitchen. It looks amazing, but also works really well, and the best part about it is it doesn’t burn anything!” Irene says. The Shaws’ handcrafted fireclay sink – big enough for easy cleaning of large pots and pans – is the other piece that really establishes the mood and gives a sense a luxury and generosity to the kitchen. Generosity is a key word here because so much of this space is about sharing with friends and family. The open design, which connects the kitchen seamlessly to the outdoor area and the dining room, allows hosts and guests to enjoy each other’s company while the food is prepared. It’s a world away from their old kitchen, where the cook was condemned to slave away in isolation. Irene talks with obvious delight about one of the parties they’ve had since the renovation, how she chatted away with friends while whipping up the egg whites for a pavlova. “We really wanted to create a space where if you’re in the kitchen you’re involved in the conversation and involved in the celebration,” she stresses. “The cook is always a part of what’s going on, which is lovely.”

Ask The Expert
A GREY AREA Colour consultant Samantha Bacon thinks shades of grey are the neutrals of the moment and are very trendy. Often overlooked as being dull and boring, she believes that greys can actually provide a very sleek and stylish background colour.
W
e tend to associate grey with sharp, contemporary decorating schemes but they can be just as effective in a country-style scheme as in a high-rise city apartment. Research by colour psychologists indicates that people with a preference for grey seek security, are agreeable and restrained. However, it’s rarely a colour that people choose as a favourite one – it’s just simply a sophisticated backdrop for other colours to shine. Warm greys are generally better for decorating when you want to achieve a soft look, so opt for those shades with a yellow or orange base rather than harsher green and bluebased greys. When you choose warmer greys, then yellow and orange will naturally work well, particularly as accent colours. It’s so important to consider the mood you want to achieve when decorating and this is where grey can really help you out. White always looks good with grey as it provides tonal variation and, in turn, creates an interesting look. However, if your walls are white with other white elements in the room, the mood will be quite different. The mood with white on white is light and airy, but grey brings a bit of drama to the look and changes the atmosphere. Fabrics from Vanessa Arbuthnott work beautifully if you’re after a country-style look, as shown in this beautiful bedroom – it’s proof that grey can create a stunning look. Dulux Champignon and Doe are lovely warm greys that work well with yellow accents as their base is yellow. Rather than using a harsh white on the trim and ceiling, consider pairing these colours with quarter-strength Dulux Vanilla Quake.
A grey palette is especially soothing in a bedroom. Shown here are Flora & Fauna, Song Birds, French Ticking, and Paisley Ground, all fabrics from Vanessa Arbuthnott.

f you are looking to give your bedroom a chic makeover, then Parisian style is for you. Not only does it have a timeless appeal, but it sets the scene for romance too. Start with the most important element – the bed, which could range from a simple wrought-iron frame to a classic upholstered bedhead or traditional timber bedstead. Layer with pretty bed linen, pillows and a velvety quilt – try a damask print for a more dramatic look or mix florals with stripes and checks to create a vintage feel. A neutral colour scheme will keep the room looking soft and feminine, or shimmering wallpaper adds a touch of glam.
RELAX
AND RECLINE
Accessory-wise, think about a stylish armchair or day bed where you can relax after a long day or curl up with a soft throw on cold nights. A beautiful vintage mirror is essential, while a sparkling chandelier will fill the room with a romantic glow. A dressing table instantly turns any room into a stylish retreat, and for storage invest in a curved chest of drawers or an old-fashioned armoire. A dressmaker’s mannequin also makes a delightful way to hang jewellery or scarves – trés chic!

PARISIAN-STYLE
TIPS FROM MEGAN HESS, RENOWNED ILLUSTRATOR AND AUTHOR OF FASHION HOUSE:
Flowers I think adding flowers to a home is one of the best ways to add charm and bring warmth into a space. It doesn’t have to be big dramatic arrangements, just little casual bunches of blooms dotted throughout to make your home feel like a chic French florist any day of the week. Table setting Nothing feels more French than a table with a little bit of flair. It could be as simple as placing an antique tray as your centrepiece. Accessorise the tray with a few favourite pieces on top, such as a scented candle, little bunch of roses and a favourite framed photo. A French balcony Feel like you’ve just escaped to St Germain by giving your balcony or deck a French makeover. Choose elegant
wrought-iron chairs with a quaint circular table. A striped awning is the perfect addition and shabby potted plants are must. Parisian boudoir Transform your bedroom into a French Chateau by layering beautiful quilts and throws in a variety of textures. From antique lace to soft cotton and cashmere quilts. The key is to not be too exacting and let them all be casually thrown together. Paris framed Another lovely way to bring a French feel to your home is to frame black and white images of the city itself. It doesn’t need to be the iconic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower. It could be simple photos of hidden Paris streets and architecture or vintage fashion images showcasing that classic French style.

any of us have dreamed of living in our own Parisian apartment, and with so many gorgeous French-inspired pieces now available, it’s simple to bring the romance and sophistication of this style to your home. The key is to have a mix of modern and classic pieces – hunt around for vintage or reproduction pieces painted in black or cream and pair with neutral or whitewashed floors to give the room a lived-in look. Try to always have at least one statement piece, whether it’s a beautiful armchair, antique mirror or statement sofa.
STYLE
AND SUBSTANCE
It’s also important to remember that less is more when it comes to choosing a colour palette – use a neutral shade such as cream or grey and then add drama with metallic finishes and touches of glossy black. Cushions, curtains and throws in bold shades and rich fabrics such as silk, velvet and linen also brighten the space and are easy to change when you are ready for a new look. The Parisians love to display photographs and artworks too, so a large artwork or a series of frames makes for a striking feature. Glam mirrored accessories such as a side table or lamp will also add a certain ‘je ne sais quoi’!

TIPS ON CREATING PARISIAN APPEAL FROM CHRIS BURKE, GENERAL MANAGER OF DARE GALLERY:
Original flair The wonderful thing about Parisian style is that you can add your own creative flair by choosing elements of the style through furniture and art that you love. The best place to start is by clearing out the clutter to give a blank canvas. Then add in some eye-catching items, such as artworks or a sofa to build your own Parisian inspired story. Mix and match old with new Contrast old antique furniture with sleek, modern pieces. Chose curtain fabrics in antique patterns and pair vintage-style armchairs with a sumptuous sofa. Opt for new pieces with an antique flair, such as the Dare Gallery Kingsley sofa (pictured), with its beautifully curved design and quilted detailing. Beautiful black While many believe Parisian-inspired living rooms are all about whites and neutrals, key accents are usually in black. Parisian panache is all about glamour and drama. Look for unusual black furniture and accessories to use as the focus point of your room. The Dare Gallery Coco range contrasts sleek, clean lines with curvaceous design. A highgloss lacquered finish adds that extra ‘oomph’ that’ll have your friends gasping at your sense of style! Gold, gold, gold No Parisian living room is complete without a touch of gold. Gold framed artworks or mirrors, such as the Dare Gallery Lyndon mirror, will add a touch of grandeur to your space. Contemporary curves While sleek, straight lines are fun for a modern home, opt for furniture which boasts fluid, curved and feminine design for a fabulously French finish.

S
etting up a restful haven in the bedroom often comes down to having the right ingredients – after all, no one feels particularly inspired to turn in early if their bed is looking a little threadbare. The first step to creating a beautiful bed is to make sure you have all the essentials – a mattress protector is an important place to start. From there, build upon the style you like. Do you want a bedroom with a Parisian feel, or perhaps the breezy feel of a Hamptons room? Whatever style you select, look for complementary colours to your existing furniture and paint colours – fresh, white linen or latte sheets never look out of place, but you can experiment with a range of colours if bright and punchy is your thing. Embroidered or decorative-edged sheets are also something to consider if you like things a little more detailed. Consider what quality sheets you wish to invest in. Try to buy the best quality you can afford as they will take longer to wear out – and, let’s face it, there’s something luxurious about slipping between high thread count sheets! The next step is to select your quilt or duvet. Keep in mind seasonality. A heavy feather down quilt isn’t as practical as a cotton duvet for the summer months. Think about colours – if you choose a neutral tone quilt then consider adding a contrasting bed runner. Prints abound, so keep an open mind on these options. The next step is pillow slips. Having a range of matching cushions to your quilt or duvet is a good idea so you can make the bed up in a plump mixture of plain and patterned pillows. If you love to add a few little extras to the bed, don’t be afraid to experiment with some cushions in contrasting prints to really make the space inviting. The bed will look so good, you’ll be dying to dive in and sleep tight!

nly 15 minutes from the centre of Adelaide and 25 minutes from the airport, this country manor house offers luxury accommodation in a picturesque setting, making it ideal for a relaxing stay or romantic getaway. Built between 1852 and 1858 by politician and businessman Arthur Hardy, the property was originally the Hardy family’s summer residence and remained a private residence for many years until it was almost destroyed in the Ash Wednesday bushfires in 1983. Restored by a local architect, it opened as a guesthouse in 1986 and has since expanded to 33 guest rooms, all elegantly appointed to reflect the history of the house. Current owner Malcolm Bean and his partner purchased the property three-and-a-half years ago while on the hunt for a hotel where they felt they could make a real difference. “Straight after the first visit, we had a strong vision of what the property could become and enormous enthusiasm for its historical architecture,” he recalls. Since they have taken over, the hotel has undergone a makeover, with new carpet, furniture, bathrooms and a second kitchen and bar all installed. They have also planted a second Pinot vineyard and re-planted the historic English gardens that surround the house.
A VIEW TO REMEMBER Today, guests enter the estate between the vineyard and gardens and are greeted by spectacular views of the Piccadilly Valley and hills below the house. Inside, the guest rooms are divided between the Heritage wing, which is beautifully furnished with high ceilings and period décor, and the Piccadilly wing, which has balconies overlooking the valley and reflects the traditional style of the house. For those who like a little indulgence, the Superior Spa rooms feature a king-size bed and an ensuite bathroom with a two-person corner spa bath, while for the ultimate in luxury, check in to the Piccadilly Grand View Suite, which offers two balconies, separate lounge and dining room, a private entrance hall, king bed and a generously sized spa bath in the walk-in bathroom. All of the rooms also have individually controlled air-conditioning, complimentary WiFi access, an LCD television with Foxtel channels, a mini bar, tea and coffee facilities, iPod docking stations and more. For group bookings, Mount Lofty House also offers self-contained accommodation in the Piccadilly Cottage, a private five-bedroom residence located adjacent to the property surrounded by beautiful gardens.

The balcony offers stunning views of the surrounding Piccadilly Valley.
ON THE MENU With its 12 acres of gardens and vineyards, Mount Lofty House also provides the perfect setting for a romantic wedding or special occasion and the property can cater for a range of functions and corporate events. The historic Coach House, which dates back to the building’s beginnings, has recently been refurbished into a conference and wedding reception venue, with six other function rooms that can cater for groups of up to 200. An elegant garden marquee is also available for dinners, cocktail parties and weddings and can cater for up to 300 guests. Fine dining is on the menu at the house, with the Piccadilly restaurant open for breakfast and dinner seven days a week. The emphasis is on seasonal ingredients and local produce from the Hills region as well as the restaurant’s own organic kitchen garden. Treat yourself to a mouth-watering selection of home-made desserts, or choose a wine from the extensive wine list which includes drops from the Adelaide Hills region as well as international vineyards. There is a guest library, complete with games and complimentary refreshments, and a billiards room, with a 24-hour butler service available anywhere on the estate. Keen for some sun? Relax with a game of tennis or a dip in the outdoor swimming pool – you can also take a stroll around the property’s Chardonnay and Pinot vineyards or simply unwind on the balcony with a glass of the Mount Lofty Chardonnay, Pinot or Sparkling.
OUT AND ABOUT There’s plenty to see and do in the Adelaide Hills region, which is renowned for its gourmet food and wine. Sample the wines at local cellar doors including Ashton Hills, Nepenthe and Shaw & Smith and hunt around for bargains at the country markets in Uraidla or Macclesfield. At nearby Cleland Wildlife Park, visitors can make friends with the native wildlife, or take in the amazing floral displays at the Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens. For Malcolm, it’s the history of Mount Lofty House, combined with its beautiful gardens and views that make a stay at the property well worth it. “I just love staying there, it is an immediate escape,” he says, “and we are proud to say that the House and Estate haven’t looked this good in 162 years.” So why not see for yourself?

Cool climate wines Adam Wadewitz is one of the brightest talents in Australian winemaking with both industry experience and several awards under his belt. This year he joined Shaw + Smith, one of Australia’s leading wineries in the Adelaide Hills, and he is increasingly embracing cool climate wines for both their structure and finesse. Q
What is your explanation of a 'cool climate wine'?
A Cool climate is a term that gets thrown around a lot. I guess I don’t think strictly about just the climate of a region when looking to make or choose a wine as I think there are so many elements outside of climate that contribute to the resultant wine. The Adelaide Hills, where Shaw + Smith is located, is a region with higher altitudes than our neighbours in McLaren Vale and the Barossa, with micro-climates that are perfect for making elegant wines. We're not trying to impose ourselves too much on the wines – we're letting the fruit express the sites that it comes from. When I think about cooler regions and the attributes I like, I think of spicy reds and lively whites – wines of structure and finesse. With careful site selection, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, riesling, pinot noir and shiraz are particularly well-suited to the cool conditions of the region. Likewise, our new Tolpuddle vineyard in Tasmania is really exciting for us with chardonnay and pinot noir performing well in this particular climate. These wines will be launched this October. Q
What is your best advice on buying cool climate wines?
A If you have the opportunity to visit a wine region, speak with the winemakers, as they will know exactly what works on their own patches of dirt. Helpful sommeliers and wine waiters are also a very valuable resource when choosing a wine from a region you are not familiar with. Understand the ‘hero’ varieties in each region (the varieties that are most suited to the region) by asking a wine retailer that you can trust. Q
Why are people tending to drink these lighter, crisper styles now as opposed to big full-bodied reds and whites?
A I like to think that the food movement in Australia has seen us really embrace these food-friendly wine styles as they work perfectly on the table. Depending on the mood and the dish, medium body, structured wines work well in many combinations.
