Expert Tips for Die-cutting T
PAR 2
In Vol 18 No 3 I demonstrated a bunch of ways to utilise your die-cutting machine and covered the basic terminology and plate layers needed; this month I’m sharing four more ideas. These machines are a great investment and I hope these samples will encourage you to get the most out of yours.
Extending a Die Sometimes a die may not be high or long enough for a card; or maybe you need a rectangle die but only have a square – well, here’s how to solve that dilemma!
STEP 1. Secure the die at one end of card using low-tack tape.
4
STEP 2. Layer it on the cutting plates so the inside end of the die is hanging over the edge, this section will not cut. Run it through the machine.
STEP 3. Place the die over the uncut area, lining up the edges and secure it with tape.

004-007_Classroom Diecuts.indd 4
10/12/13 2:59 PM
Sample 1
STEP 4. Layer it on the cutting plates so one end of the die and the section already cut is hanging over the edge.
MATERIALS USED • • • • • •
Dies: Spellbinders Nestabilities classic scalloped rectangle large Card: Core’dinations aquamarine; Bazzill celery Paper: Die Cuts With A View 12x12 Mariposa pad Prima flowers Sentiment rub-on Seam binding: apricot
STEP 5. Run it through the machine then take it out to reveal the outcome.
Mixing Together Why not experiment with your dies to see what other shapes you can come up with?
STEP 1. Layer two dies on top of each other to get a feel for how they may turn out.
STEP 2. Cut the card using the first die.
STEP 3. Place the second die on top, secure it with low-tack tape and cut it. CARDMAKING, STAMPING & PAPERCRAFT

STEP 4. Now you have your very own designer label.
TIP
MATERIALS USED • Dies: Spellbinders Nestabilities label #1, label #14 • Stamp: Paperbag Studios Best Friends; Hero Arts CL469 Swirl Christmas (set of 10) You may need to trim some edges with scissors to neaten the design.
• Card: Bazzill white, lily pad; Core’dinations love potion • Ink pad: Distress Ink crushed olive • Cardstock banners
Creative Folds Dies aren’t just for cutting out whole; try this clever partial cut-and-fold idea for a whole new look. Try shapes like flowers, balloons, leaves etc. Symmetrical dies work particularly well.
STEP 1. Secure a die on the double-sided paper with low-tack tape.
6
STEP 2. Position it on the cutting plates so half the die is hanging off the edge. Tape the paper to the plate to stop it moving during the cutting process.
STEP 3. Run it through the machine, only the card sitting on the plates will be cut. Take it out and fold the cut section back, then secure it down with mounting tape.

STEP 1. Cut the main shape out with the selected die. Leave the die in place position a foam mat and go around the inner edge with a stylist tool.
STEP 2. Arrange square and circle dies on top of it and secure them with a small amount of low-tack tape to keep them in position.

TIPS
• These sentiment stamps come in clear acrylic and wood-mounted varieties. Use a stamp positioner with the wood set to ensure perfect placement the first time round. • Create these cards in a production line, one step at a time, so you can play with colour combinations; swap the bows, flowers and chipboard frames as many times as you like to find the perfect mix! • Stacking bows and embellishments in sets of two provides extra interest, without overloading the visual space. • Stamp the words in various arrangements to help fill gaps or allow space for embellishments.
GENERAL METHOD FOR ALL CARDS 1. Trim 10, 115mm x 90mm panels of Nantucket paper and affix them to folded ivory card 230mm x 90mm or 115mm x 180mm. 2. Back 10 chipboard frames with Nantucket jumbo shrimp paper using double-sided tape. 3. Stamp Fabulous Phrases inside the windows with black ink, mixing and matching the words to suit the occasion. If you are creating cards to keep on hand, use generic phrases like ‘celebrate you’, ‘fabulous day’ or ‘heartfelt wishes’, so they suit a variety of purposes. 4. Spread the cards out and lay the frames on top until you find
the best combination of colours then secure them with double-sided tape. 5. Affix butterflies to the frames with glue dots. Add resin flowers over the bodies with silicone glue – this will keep the flowers level. 6. Tie 10 bows in seam binding and 10 bows in coloured cord. Stack these on the cards in sets of two using glue dots. For products in this project: Stampin’ Up! right-hand side with the scalloped border. Affix this to the right-hand side of folded cream card 300mm x 105mm, so it overlaps the edge.
