A Wilmington, N.C., man who finished last in his fantasy football league had an unusual penalty: He had to spend 24 hours in a Waffle House. Justin Poliachik settled into a booth at 7 p.m. Thursday, ready to kill some time — and to eat. His league had agreed that he could knock off 20 minutes for each waffle he ate, so consuming seven of them meant he could leave after 21 hours and 40 minutes, he told WWAY-TV. (EXPRESS)

page three Nationals release dates for ‘Star Wars Day’ and bobblehead giveaways NATIONALS A Sean Doolittle bobblehead, a Hawaiian shirt, a “Game of Thrones” Michael A. Taylor figurine and a Max Scherzer eye patch for kids are among the highlights of the Nationals’ 2018 promotional schedule announced Monday. One might not expect a relief pitcher who has spent half a season with the team to have a bobblehead created in his likeness so soon, but Doolittle established himself as a fan favorite after he was acquired from the A’s before the trade deadline and converted 21 of 22 save opportunities. Doolittle is one of five Nationals players with bobblehead giveaways — all of them on Fridays. Scherzer, Ryan Zimmerman, Bryce Harper and Anthony Rendon are the others. “Game of Thrones” isn’t returning to HBO until 2019, but “Game of Thrones” Night will be back at Nationals Park on Aug. 18 and feature a Michael A. Taylor
figurine. “Star Wars Day” will be May 5 with a sock giveaway. The Nationals will give away a T-shirt featuring the season schedule at the home opener on April 5, an All-Star Game tote bag on June 6 and a Nationals Hawaiian shirt on Aug. 17. The Nationals designated every Sunday home game during the 2017 season a “Family Funday,” with discounted tickets, activities for kids during the game and a chance to run the bases afterward. This season, one Sunday home game every month will include a gate giveaway for fans 12 and under with the Scherzer eye patch, a fidget spinner, superhero cape, batting helmet, night light and pajama set. Nationals Chief Revenue and Marketing Officer Valerie Camillo said the Nationals released their promotional schedule about a month earlier than usual this season, which explains why they don’t yet have images of the items. The team is offering six-game ticket packs built around premium giveaway days for the first time. SCOTT ALLEN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Despite uncertainty, local economy growing REGION Many economists thought 2017 would be a tough year for D.C. and its outlying suburbs. After all, in one of his first actions, newly elected President Trump imposed a federal hiring freeze as part of his promise to “drain the swamp.” His early budget proposals suggested Republicans would slash federal spending, depriving the region of a key fuel needed to drive its economic engine. But many of those fears were never realized. Instead, the region’s economy continued to
chug along, growing modestly as national and global markets gained strength. The region’s unemployment rate was steady for the year, holding at 3.8 percent in November. Where the region really outperformed economists’ projections was in job growth. An analysis by the Stephen S. Fuller Institute at George Mason University found that the Washington metropolitan area added 56,400 jobs in the first 11 months of 2017, reflecting a continuation of the gains the region experienced in 2015 and 2016. The

performance easily bested the forecast of economist Stephen Fuller, the institute’s namesake, who figured the region would add fewer than 50,000 positions. “So far, there’s no sense that the Trump administration has cost us much,” Fuller said. Fuller is projecting the region will add 44,500 jobs in 2018, suggesting a return to a job creation pace that is more typical of the region. The metropolitan area has added an average of about 44,200 jobs annually during the past 20 years. AARON GREGG

200K Salvadorans may be forced to leave U.S. Trump administration ends protected status granted after ’01 quakes
Migrants lose protection
PABLO MARTINEZ MONSIVAIS (AP)
IMMIGRATION In one of its most significant immigration decisions, the Trump administration said Monday that it will terminate the provisional residency permits of almost 200,000 Salvadorans who have lived in the country since at least 2001, leaving them to potentially face deportation. The administration said it will give the Salvadorans until Sept. 9, 2019, to leave the U.S. or find a way to obtain legal residency, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security. The Salvadorans were granted what is known as Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, after earthquakes hit the country in 2001, and their permits have been renewed on an 18-month basis since then. The announcement was consistent with the White House’s broader stated goal of reducing legal immigration to the U.S. and intensifying efforts to expel those who arrived illegally. But Homeland Security officials characterized the decision by Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen in narrower legal terms — as a recognition that conditions in El Salvador have improved enough since the earthquakes to no longer warrant the TPS designation. The DHS statement noted that

the U.S. government has deported more than 39,000 Salvadorans in the past two years, demonstrating, it said, “that the temporary inability of El Salvador to adequately return their nationals after the earthquake has been addressed.” DHS officials said 262,500 Salvadorans have been granted TPS permits, but recent estimates indicate the number is closer to 195,000. Immigrant advocates, Salvadoran government officials and many others had implored Nielsen to extend the TPS designation, citing the country’s horrific gang violence and the potentially destabilizing effect of so many people being sent home. Others urged her to consider the approximately 190,000 U.S.born children of Salvadoran TPS recipients. Their parents

President gives new meaning to ‘executive time’ The amount of time President Trump spends away from the White House — especially at his golf properties — is often discussed. Now, Axios reports that the time Trump does spend inside the White House is less intense than many might expect. An Axios story Sunday night said that Trump has significantly curtailed his official schedule as president — to the point that his first meeting is often held at 11 a.m. That is frequently when he gets his daily intelligence briefing. g He spends almost all of the eearlier part of the morning in his White House residence, rather W tthan the West Wing or the Oval Office, watching TV, tweeting O aand making calls, Axios reported. That chunk of his day, generally 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., is g sscheduled as “executive time,” a phrase that is bound to become p tthe butt of plenty of jokes. Trump also has other periods of “executive time” sprinkled o iin throughout his official work sschedule, which is usually between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. b Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders responded H tto Axios by saying the president works “long hours and long w days” almost every day. “The time in the morning is a mix of residence time and Oval Office time but he always has calls with staff, Hill members, Cabinet members and foreign leaders during this time,” Sanders said. Why not President Winfrey?
PAUL DRINKWATER (NBCUNIVERSAL VIA GETTY IMAGES)
WASHINGTONPOST.COM SPEAKING OF SCIENCE
Americans are clamoring for it. And it could happen. What does that say about the state we’re in?
POLITICS America woke up Monday with a crazy idea in its addled brain: Oprah Winfrey could be the next president of the United States. The notion has tugged at the imagination for as long as Winfrey has been famous, but her rousing speech at the Golden Globes on Sunday electrified much of the 56 percent of the populace that disapproves of her fellow TV personality, President Trump. The viability of a Winfrey campaign, on Monday at least, seemed capable of uniting both ends of the political spectrum. “I want her to run for president,” Meryl Streep told The Washington Post after the Globes. “I don’t think she had any intention [of declaring]. But now she doesn’t have a choice.” “Oprah. #ImWithHer,” tweeted Bill Kristol, scion of neoconservatism and the original promoter of Sarah Palin, whose tongue-incheek declaration gave way to an objective case for her candidacy: “Understands Middle America better than Elizabeth Warren,” he tweeted. “Less touchy-feely than Joe Biden, more pleasant than Andrew Cuomo, more charismatic than John Hickenlooper.”
The question lingering under this surprising groundswell: Are we now at a point where we believe celebrity is a prerequisite for winning (let alone governing)? “Arguably, Donald Trump is the most famous man in the world,” said GOP strategist Rick Wilson, a never-Trump Republican. Under the new rules of political engagement, “maybe you can only beat a celebrity with another celebrity.” Her chances of winning? “One hundred percent,” said another Republican strategist who has worked on presidential campaigns and was granted anonymity to speculate brazenly. “If she runs for the Democratic nomination, I think it’s over.” GOP consultant Ana Navarro agreed. “Are we really asking ourselves whether a political neophyte, billionaire, media-savvy TV star can become president? America answered that already,” she said. “I don’t know how much she knows about foreign policy or some domestic policy issues. But hell, it’s not like she’d be running against Churchill. She’d be running against Trump.” Have we lost our minds? Or
Brand could be at risk By running for president, Oprah Winfrey would be risking her stable and lucrative brand, burnished worldwide over the course of 35 years in entertainment, journalism and philanthropy. “If you look at what happened to Trump’s brand, it’s been diminished,” said Rick Tyler, former spokesman for Ted Cruz and Newt Gingrich. “His hotels, his golf courses are the highest quality, and his name used to be associated with that kind of quality, but I don’t think most Americans think of him that way anymore. I don’t know if she wants to diminish her brand that way. I don’t know why she would want to.” (TWP)
are we coming to our senses? All Winfrey did was give an acceptance speech for a lifetimeachievement award. A good speech, yes — but just a speech. Still, America seems starved for her brand of optimism after nearly a year of Trump’s dark moods and barbed insults. “If she truly wanted to run for president, she’d have a major head start,” said Arnold Schwarzenegger, who leveraged film stardom to win the California governorship
Rep. Ed Royce of California to retire, the eighth GOP chairman to bow out ahead of midterms
as a Republican, noting Winfrey’s inspirational qualities, name recognition and “unbelievable communication skills.” Excitement about the idea rocketed ahead of prudence and circumspection. Two of Winfrey’s friends said she’s “actively thinking” about 2020, CNN reported Monday, but asked backstage at the Golden Globes, Winfrey said she had no plans to run. Does America really want this? Are we comfortable with the woman who told us to “live your best life” ordering drone strikes that accidentally slaughter wedding parties? Do we want to hear about Oprah’s tax plan? “Running for president is a whole different thing,” said Cornell Belcher, a Democratic strategist and former Obama pollster. “It’s not Hollywood. It’s an ugly, nasty, grueling slog through all of these multiple states. … To successfully run, you need several things: money, infrastructure and a niche. That said, I think in this current environment — and I cannot believe I am saying this — but if Oprah would throw her hat in the ring, she would be the front-runner.” DAN ZAK AND MONICA HESSE (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Climate change affects sex ratio of sea turtles Green sea turtles do not develop into males or females due to sex chromosomes, like humans and most mammals do. Instead, the temperature outside a turtle egg influences the sex of the growing embryo. And this unusual biological quirk, scientists say, endangers their future in a warmer world. Already, some sea turtle populations are so skewed by heat that the young reptiles are almost entirely female, according to a new report in the journal Current Biology. At what biologists call the pivot temperature, turtles hatch as a mixture of males and females. For green sea turtles, this temperature is 85 degrees Fahrenheit. A few degrees below, all the sea turtles are born male. Heat up the eggs and only females are born. Scientists looked at the turtle population on Raine Island, along Australia’s east coast, which is one of the largest gatherings of green sea turtles in the world. More than 99 percent of young turtles there are female, the scientists found, and 87 percent of mature turtles are female. For every juvenile male, there are 116 female turtles. Because of this, the overall turtle population might briefly increase, as long as the more numerous female turtles can find males to fertilize their eggs. Turtles do not need a 50:50 ratio of males to females. BEN GUARINO

The Supreme Court on Monday gave a black death row inmate in Georgia a chance to challenge his death sentence because a white juror in his case later used a racial epithet in an affidavit and questioned whether black people have souls. Mueller aims to grill Trump Disasters cost U.S. a record $306B in 2017 ENVIRONMENT Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria combined with Western wildfires and other natural disasters to make 2017 the most expensive year on record for disasters in the U.S., the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported Monday. The disasters caused $306 billion in damage, the bulk of it ($265 billion) from hurricanes. The previous most expensive disaster year was 2005, when Hurricane Katrina helped lead to $215 billion in damage when adjusted for inflation. The record intensifies fears about future natural disasters, as scientists worry that climate change could make extreme weather events more damaging. Hurricane Harvey, which caused flooding in Houston and its surroundings, wrecked $125 billion in damage, the year’s most expensive disaster. Hurricane Maria, which set off a humanitarian crisis in Puerto Rico and beyond, caused $90 billion in damage. Hurricane Irma raked the Caribbean and hit Florida, causing $50 billion in damage. The storms also caused 251 deaths, the report found. Harvey, Irma and Maria join Katrina and 2012’s Sandy among the five most costly U.S. hurricanes in NOAA’s disaster record, which goes back to 1980. Western wildfires cost $18 billion and 54 lives, the report found — also an annual record. CHRIS MOONEY AND BRADY DENNIS (TWP)
NATIONAL SECURITY Special counsel Robert Mueller has raised the likelihood with President Trump’s legal team that his office will seek an interview with the president, triggering a discussion among his attorneys about how to avoid a sitdown encounter or set limits on such a session, according to two people familiar with the talks. Mueller brought up the issue of interviewing Trump during a late December meeting with the president’s lawyers, John Dowd and Jay Sekulow. The special counsel’s team could interview Trump soon on some limited portion of questions — possibly within the next several weeks, according to a

campaign coordinated with Russia in the 2016 election, the person added. But the president’s attorneys are reluctant to allow him to sit down for open-ended, face-toface questioning without clear parameters, according to two people familiar with the talks.
Since the December meeting, Trump’s attorneys have discussed whether he could provide written answers to some portion of the questions from Mueller’s investigators, as then-President Ronald Reagan did during the Iran-Contra investigation in the 1980s. Trump’s attorneys also have discussed the obligation of Mueller’s team to demonstrate they could not obtain the information they are seeking without interviewing the president. Dowd and Sekulow declined to comment. Ty Cobb, the White House lawyer overseeing the administration’s response to the Mueller investigation, said Monday he remains confident that any portion of the investigation related to the president or the White House will wrap up shortly. Cool Brees feels fresh At nearly 39 years old, QB shows he’s still capable of putting the Saints on his back NFL PLAYOFFS The Saints were done dancing in their locker room, done waving a broom to commemorate their three-game sweep of the Panthers this season. With Sunday’s triumph in a first-round NFC playoff game in New Orleans, they had earned a trip to Minnesota to face the Vikings in a conference semifinal this weekend. And yet Drew Brees was not about to gloat. The Panthers essentially had dared Brees, the quarterback who owns five of the nine 5,000-yard passing seasons
in NFL history, to beat them, employing a game plan that prioritized stopping Pro Bowl backs Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara. And Brees had done just that, beating the Panthers by throwing for 376 yards and two touchdowns in the 31-26 triumph that ended Carolina’s season. But if Brees was offended by the slight, he wasn’t about to show it. Instead, he reveled in having a team around him that’s good enough to help him get back to the Super Bowl eight years after winning the big game.

Two coaches were selected Monday for the College Football Hall of Fame, joining a 13-player 2018 class led by Charles Woodson and Calvin Johnson. (AP)
“We trust our system,” Brees said Sunday. “We trust each other. And I think what we’ve proved is that we can beat you in a lot of different ways.” There can’t have been many times during Brees’ tenure in New Orleans that he’s seen such a stop-the-run strategy, particularly in a playoff game. But he dismissed that with what amounted to a shrug, saying: “That happens every now and then.” Brees will turn 39 on Monday, one day after the Saints visit the Vikings. There are more days behind him than ahead of him in his career. But give him a chance to sling the football all over the field, and he still can get it done. It’s a return trip to Minneapolis for the Saints, who lost at Minnesota 29-19 in their season opener. That was part of an 0-2 start that gave way to an eight-game win streak. For the Saints, the progress has been considerable. “That feels like ages and ages ago,” Brees said. On Sunday, the quarterback
Each game in the divisional round features a discrepancy in playoff experience between quarterbacks. Here’s a look at each QB’s number of playoff starts, according to ESPN Stats & Info. (EXPRESS) Saints’ Drew Brees (12) vs. Vikings’ Case Keenum (0) Falcons’ Matt Ryan (9) vs. Eagles’ Nick Foles (1) Patriots’ Tom Brady (34) vs. Titans’ Marcus Mariota (1) Steelers’ Ben Roethlisberger (20) vs. Jaguars’ Blake Bortles (1)
acknowledged the tough gameday environment ahead and said the Saints have their work cut out for them. But first, he was going to savor what happened in the Superdome. “You try to enjoy as many of these moments as possible,” he said, “because it’s not gonna last forever.” MARK MASKE (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Coach Bill Belichick said Monday that he “absolutely” “a plans to coach the Patriots next season amid reports of dysfunction in the organization. ESPN E has reported that owner Robert Kraft sided with quarterback Tom Brady and forced Belichick to trade Jimmy Garoppolo to the 49ers, which reportedly left the coach “furious and demoralized.” Belichick B told reporters that the ESPN article contains “random” and “baseless” comments. No. 2 West Virginia matches best ranking since West era
Rising star wants to switch h teams from U.S. to Mexico o
Chicago has hired Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy as its new head coach, the Bears announced Monday. The move came a week after firing coach John Fox, whose .292 winning percentage over three years ranks second-lowest in team history. They Bears were 5-11 this season and haven’t finished above .500 since they let Lovie Smith go after a 10-6 finish in 2012. Nagy, 39, spent 10 seasons working for Andy Reid in Philadelphia and Kansas City. Nagy drew praise for his work with quarterback Alex Smith and will be called upon to help develop Mitchell Trubisky, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 draft. (AP)
Villanova needed just a week to reclaim its lost No. 1 ranking in the AP Top 25. West Virginia waited a lot longer — nearly six decades, in fact — to get back to its position at No. 2 in Monday’s poll. The Mountaineers’ win over No. 7 Oklahoma was part of a week that saw four top-5 teams lose to unranked opponents and six top-10 teams lose overall. West Virginia (14-1) earned 12 first-place votes, securing its highest ranking since December 1959 during Jerry West’s senior season. West Virginia’s only loss came in its opener against Texas A&M. No. 8 Texas Tech (14-1) moved up 10 spots after its first win in 18 tries at Kansas. (AP)
The Washington Post on Monday confirmed a report from Univision Deportes that Jonathan Gonzalez, a midfielder who has played in the U.S. youth national system since the U-14 stage, is seeking to switch h his national allegiance to Mexico. Gonzalez, 18, was raised in California nia and is one of the most promising young players in American soccer, but his club team is Monterrey in Mexico, his parents are from Mexico, and he has dual citizenship. p. If FIFA approves the move in time, he could debut for El Tri in a friendlyy against Bosnia on Jan. 31 and contend for a roster spot on Mexico’s World Cup squad. (TWP)

Raw water — is it safe?
WELLNESS | PERSPECTIVE
2018 nutrition trends
Hold your canteen under a natural spring and you’ll come away with clear water full of beneficial bacteria and minerals from the earth. That’s what proponents of the “raw water” movement are banking on: selling people on the idea of drinking water that contains the things they say nature intended without the chemicals used in urban water treatment. In parts of the U.S., it has become a high-dollar commodity — water captured in glass bottles and sold straight to you. But experts warn that raw water purveyors may also be selling things you don’t want — dangerous bacteria, viruses and parasites that can make you sick. Experts say raw water may contain minerals, but you can get those minerals from a healthy diet — without the risks.
Last year was all about plant protein, sprouted foods and healthy fats. This year will likely be focused on eating to prevent and manage health conditions (like Alzheimer’s disease) and boosting digestive health. The latest Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo brought together more than 13,000 nutrition professionals to learn new trends. Here are six takeaways. CHRISTY BRISSETTE (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)
Omega-9s
Chicory root fiber
Eating for ‘Type 3’ diabetes
Why it’s a trend: Healthy fats are in, and in 2018 we’ll home in on omega-9s for their potential to regulate blood sugar levels and promote a healthy weight.
Why it’s a trend: Chicory root fibers (inulin and oligofructose) are the only plant-based prebiotics with scientifically proven health benefits such as weight management, improved calcium absorption and digestive health.
Why it’s a trend: Alzheimer’s disease is referred to as “Type 3 diabetes,” as both conditions involve insulin resistance and deficiency. This year will focus on eating for brain health.
Where you’ll see it: Expect to find it in a variety of foods, including nutrition bars (ThinkThin), yogurt (Oikos Triple Zero), smoothies and oatmeal. You can also find it as a powder (Prebiotin) that can be added to food and drinks.
Where you’ll see it: Research has found that blueberries are rich in antioxidants that may be beneficial for the brain, particularly when it comes to memory loss. Expect to see blueberry powder as a supplement and blueberries being used to create condiments and sauces.
THINKSTOCK PHOTOS
Where you’ll see it: Algae has been touted as a superfood, but the newest use for algae is in the production of omega-9 cooking oil. Thrive Algae Oil is high in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and low in saturated fats. It’s completely neutral and odorless, so you can use it in any recipe.
Pseudograins made convenient
Stevia 2.0
Cottage cheese, the new Greek yogurt
Why it’s a trend: Food companies are coming up with ways to more quickly bring us whole grains and pseudograins (seeds that are served as grains), which have longer cooking times.
Why it’s a trend: Stevia continues to rule as the sweetener of choice for people wanting to cut down on sugar or calories.
Why it’s a trend: While it used to be just for dieters, cottage cheese is becoming more popular because it’s a high-protein meal or snack and contains mostly casein, a protein that can help you feel full longer.
Where you’ll see it: Fast and portable amaranth, buckwheat and quinoa in single portions such as Ellyndale Q Cups in low-sodium flavors like Savory Garlic & Mushroom. They’re ready in five minutes; just add boiling water and steep and you’re ready to eat.
Where you’ll see it: Look for stevia as an ingredient in more beverages, baking mixes and condiments as consumers look for calorie- and sugar-reduced versions of their favorites. Stevia will be mixed with brown sugar, cane sugar and honey by companies such as Truvia to make lower-sugar and lower-calorie options.
LINDSEY BEVER (TWP)
Where you’ll see it: Brands such as Muuna make cottage cheese with a texture that melts in your mouth and is sweetened with real fruit and no artificial flavors. Plus it’s low in sugar, with only 4 grams in the plain version.

Q. I have been “unfriended”
DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK
Sorry, but that’s not an apology Q. When I express disappointment to my husband, his response leaves me feeling guilty and angry. Recently, after I mentioned something I wish he’d done, he said, “I’m sorry I’m such a disappointment to you.” He looked shocked that I didn’t accept his “apology,” and we had a tense few days. In most respects he’s a wonderful husband, but I need to call BS on this. MANIPULATED? This may not be deliberate manipulation, but at best it’s an unhelpful deflection. He needs to understand that when he does that, he invalidates your feelings, and loses his chance to target the behavior that is upsetting you. Instead, he frames it like you wronged him. (It’s like a secondcousin-once-removed from gaslighting.) Ask him whether
you have a right to sometimes be disappointed, and how he would prefer that you express it. Get him to think about why it seems threatening for him to hear things like this — is he all-or-none in his thinking? Overly conflict-averse? A bit insecure in his ego? Start from scratch with how much you love his otherwise wonderful nature and go from there.
by my daughter and she won’t tell me why. It has been six years since I’ve heard her voice. I try to keep the line of communication open by dropping an email every once in a while, but she has been steadily refusing to acknowledge the one-line “keep in touch” notes. How long must I go on trying and being rejected by my daughter before I give up? SAD I’m truly sorry. The possible causes are endless, from your not realizing her rightful need to escape a toxic behavior of yours, to her own disordered thinking or behavior that made her drop out of your life. I suspect you know more than you wrote, and therein lies the key to whether this is fixable. Or perhaps there is something that you refuse to know or even see — and until you do, you won’t know what pathways could be a possibility to reconciliation. There’s no way around this without further exploration on your end; seeing a professional in person rather than one in newsprint could really help give you insight. Is this the cultural revolution?
1
All eyes were on women making a statement at this year’s Golden Globes
ANALYSIS They came to disrupt the ritual. They came dressed in black — custom-made, couture black, of course — but black all the same. When they were asked about their work, their personal lives, their takes on pop culture, they obliged. And then, they turned the conversation back to where they wanted it: on the place of women in the world, especially those who have been mistreated. At the 75th annual Golden Globes on Sunday, some of the world’s most recognizable actresses joined forces to ensure that this year, the red carpet wouldn’t feel like business as usual. This was the first major awards show since the revelations about Harvey Weinstein and dozens of other powerful men sparked the “Me Too” movement. As first, it had the potential to be the most influential — if the right was message was sent. Would it feel like nothing more than privileged celebrities making superficial sound bites that had been pre-approved by their anxious publicists? Or would there be something of substance? Something that after months and months of sickening news could make an audience feel empowered or hopeful? “It’s time for us to make a difference,” said “Big Little Lies” actress Laura Dern. When speaking to Ryan Seacrest, she
introduced the woman standing next to her, a face likely unrecognizable to those watching E! “Can you talk about Alianza?” she asked Monica Ramirez, board president of Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, an organization that works to protect the rights of women farmworkers. Women farmworkers, on the E! red carpet show? Seacrest is here for it. He’s also here to talk to Meryl Streep — but she brought along Ai-jen Poo, director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, and they want to talk about the power imbalance that leads to abuse. He’s also here to talk to Michelle Williams, who twice in the course of two minutes reverted the topic of conversation from her movie to the woman by her side: Tarana Burke, the activist who founded the “Me Too” movement more than 10 years ago. Alison Brie, who was nominated for her performance in the woman-dominated Netflix show “Glow,” appeared to be wearing a black ball gown. (Wearing black was encouraged by those behind “Time’s Up,” a recently launched legal defense fund to fight sexual harassment and workplace inequality.) She then showed the cameras how she took the charge one step further, stretching her leg out on the red carpet to reveal her gown was actually a jumpsuit. “Tonight is about women

wearing the pants, so I chose to literally wear the pants,” she said. The message carried over to the ceremony, where many winners and presenters touched on the subject of gender injustice. Here’s Reese Witherspoon, speaking after “Big Little Lies” won best limited series: “I want to thank everyone who broke their silence this year. … Time is up. We see you, we hear you and we will tell your stories.” Here’s Salma Hayek, presenting a clip of “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”: “Our next nominated drama tells the story of a mother who seeks justice for her daughter who was raped and murdered. When local cops fail to find the killer, she
rents three billboards and paints a message calling out the chief of police. I guess that was her way of saying, time’s up!” And here’s Oprah Winfrey, accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award, the evening’s anticipated centerpiece: “I want all the girls watching here, now, to know that a new day is on the horizon.” A year from now, the ritual will surely be back. The red carpet, the flashing lights, the sound bites. The dresses will be colorful again, and the audience will remember when nearly every celebrity wore black — maybe as a showy stunt, or maybe as the thing that made just a bit of a difference. JESSICA CONTRERA AND HANK STUEVER (THE WASHINGTON POST)
AWARDS Oprah Winfrey shared a noteworthy statistic in her passionate Cecil B. DeMille Award acceptance speech, which left many Golden Globes attendees in tears: “It is not lost on me that at this moment, there are some little girls watching as I become the first black woman to be given this … award.” But Winfrey wasn’t the only winner to make history Sunday. “This Is Us” star Sterling K. Brown, above, a two-time Emmy winner, is the first black man to win a Golden Globe for best actor in a TV drama. He’s been nominated for the role twice, and he thanked creator Dan Fogelman for writing race into the character. “You wrote a role for a black man that could only be played by a black man, and what I appreciate so much about this thing is I’m being seen for who I am and being appreciated for who I am,” he said. “And it makes it much more difficult to dismiss me or anyone who looks like me.” Aziz Ansari, who won an Emmy with Lena Waithe last year for writing “Master of None,” is also the first Asian man to win best actor in a TV comedy. “I genuinely didn’t think I would win because all the websites said I was going to lose,” he joked. He thanked the show’s cast and crew, adding, “The only reason my acting is so good in that show is because everyone else holds me up the whole time.” SONIA RAO (TWP)

“I left Twitter for a month and when I come back everyone’s eating Tide Pods. Y’all crazy.” @BRANDONARACE, tweeting about the “eating Tide Pods” meme, in which people on the internet joke about eating Tide Pods or how much they want to eat them. The meme isn’t new, but it’s recently become more popular. “Tide Pods: satisfying gush, amazing mouth feel,” @fevervinyI tweeted.
“The 2020 Democratic debates among Oprah, the Rock, Tom Hanks and Joe Biden are going to be awesome.” @MASKEDSCHEDULER, commenting on the four people who
seem like potential presidential contenders for 2020. Calls for Oprah to run for president reached a fever pitch Monday after her rousing Golden Globes speech. These four, however, may never take the debate stage together, because Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson might run on the GOP ticket.
“I’m suing James Damore for nearly choking to death on my coffee when I read this headline.” @CHELSCORE, reacting to the news
Monday that James Damore, the former Google engineer who was fired in August over a memo questioning diversity programs, has filed a classaction lawsuit against the company. He alleges that Google discriminates against conservative white males.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You’ve begun doing things in a way that attracts a new kind of attention — but is that what you really want? You can still turn back. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You may be caught between two conflicting desires today. With a little work, you can have it both ways. ARIES (March 21-April 19) You may have to bow out of a project that you feel isn’t going in the right direction, but will you be able to keep your feelings to yourself?

TODAY: We wake up to a mostly sunny sky, but don’t let your guard down, as some of us could encounter icy spots on our way to work. A milder air mass with more Pacific influences (as opposed to Arctic origins) builds into the area, so highs (finally!) rise to more seasonable levels in the mid- to upper 40s.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You may wish that you had signed on with friends to a project you hear is much more enjoyable than you had imagined. Is it too late? LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) The questions you ask today yield only some of the information you need. You’ll have to search if you want to uncover the rest.
