Workers at an outdoor recreation center in New Gloucester, Maine, are warning skiers to watch out for an “aggressive dive-bombing” owl that recently struck a man. Pineland Farms said the owl, which attacked silently, cut the man’s head. Officials believe the bird — a barred owl or a great horned owl — is protecting a nest near a cross-country ski trail. Pineland advises people to wave their arms overhead or wear a hat if they pass the area. (AP)

Can you spot the alligator? An anecdote is hidden in the official portrait of Gov. Terry McAuliffe VIRGINIA Look very closely at Gov. The new painting that will hang on the third floor of the state Capitol carries a subtle reference to a part of the Virginia governor’s colorful political history. “As fa r as I k now, G ov.

McAuliffe is the only American governor who has ever wrestled an alligator,” said Gavin Glakas, who painted the portrait, which was unveiled Wednesday at the Executive Mansion. “So you have to be looking for it, but there’s a little alligator.” The alligator, in the lower right corner, is a reference to a fundraising stunt by the governor when he worked for President Jimmy Carter’s unsuccessful re-election campaign in 1980. ‘We shattered’ the ceiling VIRGINIA Newly minted Del. Kathy Tran, D-Fairfax, sat in the House of Delegates on Wednesday, nursing her 1-year-old daughter in the storied chamber long dominated by men. In the row ahead of her, fellow newcomer Del. Hala Ayala, D-Prince William, sported a purse-shaped American flag lapel and a bracelet honoring the Equal Rights Amendment. The next day, female lawmakers outnumbered men at a Democratic press conference urging the expansion of Medicaid. Women have reached a high mark in the Virginia General Assembly this year, taking 38 out of 140 seats in a way that is starting to reshape the culture of a Southern capital often seen as an old boys club. The surge of women in Virginia resulted from the Democratic sweep in the House of Delegates in November that flipped 15 seats, replacing 11 men with women. Women now hold 28 of 100 seats in the chamber, up from 17 last year. They make up nearly

the legislature. The achievement in Virginia may be the start of something greater, as a record number of women around the country run for governor and Congress this year. Many are Democrats invigorated by Hillary Clinton, who would have been the first female president, and her loss to President Trump despite his history of lewd and disparaging comments about women, among others. “We know that Virginia will be the first of many states to elect a record number of women this cycle,” said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY’s List, which supports Democratic women. “While 28 percent is not nearly a high enough percentage of women, this is how true institutional change begins.” But men still dominate positions of power. Just two of 25 committees in both chambers are chaired by a woman. “Women are the majority of the population in Virginia. At some point, I’m hopeful we will be majority in this room,” said Del. Elizabeth Guzman, D-Prince William, whom Democratic freshmen chose as their representative to leadership. “This is just the start.” FENIT NIRAPPIL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Two men face life in prison for sex trafficking teen girls

Metro board advances plan to refund fares for late trips

Virginia cities would have the authority to remove or alter Confederate monuments under a proposal from a top Democratic state lawmaker. House Minority Leader David Toscano filed a bill this week that he said aims to clarify what’s allowed now under a law designed to protect war memorials. The longsimmering debate about what to do with symbols of the Confederacy was renewed this summer after a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, which is part of Toscano’s district. The rally was held in part to protest the removal of a statue. Republicans expressed doubt Thursday about the measure’s chances of passage. (AP)

Two men face up to life in prison for trafficking teenage prostitutes across the Washington area. A jury in federal court in Alexandria found 28-year-old Ivan Williams and 26-year-old Dennis Davis guilty Wednesday. Several former prostitutes testified against them, including two women who pleaded guilty to helping traffic minors. Defense attorneys emphasized that the evidence in the case came largely from co-conspirators who were likely to get reduced sentences for their testimony, and had lied to law enforcement in the past. Williams and Davis will be sentenced in April. (AP/THE WASHINGTON POST)

A Metro board committee Thursday advanced General Manager Paul Wiedefeld’s proposal to reimburse rush-hour rail and bus riders who encounter extended delays. The “Rush Hour Promise” would credit the full fare to riders with registered SmarTrip cards who endure delays of 15 minutes or more during peak hours. Rail riders would automatically receive the credit, while bus riders would have to fill out an online form to get their reimbursement. Metro says the program, which could be launched as early as Jan. 26, will provide a measure of accountability for management. (TWP)

Trump slurs poorer nations In meeting, he urges fewer immigrants from ‘shithole countries’ IMMIGRATION President Trump grew frustrated with lawmakers Thursday in the Oval Office when they floated restoring protections for immigrants from Haiti, El Salvador and African countries as part of a bipartisan immigration deal, according to two people briefed on the meeting. “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Trump said, according to these people, referring to African countries and Haiti. A White House spokesman defended Trump’s position on immigration without directly addressing Trump’s remarks. “Certain Washington politicians choose to fight for foreign countries, but President Trump will always fight for the American people,” spokesman Raj Shah

said in a statement. “… Like other nations that have merit-based immigration, President Trump is fighting for permanent solutions that make our country stronger by welcoming those who can contribute to our society, grow our economy and assimilate into our great nation.” Outlining a potential bipartisan deal, the lawmakers discussed restoring protections for countries that have been removed from the temporary protected status program while adding $1.5 billion for a border wall and making changes to the visa lottery system. Governors blast Fla. exemption Coastal leaders ask: Why aren’t our states excluded from drilling plan? ENVIRONMENT The Trump administration’s decision to exempt Florida from expanded offshore drilling kicked off a frenzy in other coastal states, with governors from both political parties asking: Why not us? “We cannot afford to take a chance with the beauty, the majesty and the economic value and vitality of our wonderful coastline,” South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, R, who backed President Trump, said in a statement. “Not Off Our Coast,” North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, D, wrote in a tweet. The Florida carve-out, announced Tuesday by Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, created new doubts about the fate of the entire offshore drilling decision — and immediately became another challenge for Republicans as they work to hold off Democrats in the midterm elections. State attorneys general and environmental groups have

suggested Zinke undermined the entire drilling rule with his visit to Tallahassee, Fla., where he heaped praise on “straightforward, easy to work for” Gov. Rick Scott, R — a political ally. “The Administrative Procedure Act requires there to be a reasonable rationale behind agency decisions, and that they can’t be arbitrary and capricious,” said Michael Brune, the executive director of the Sierra Club, referring to a 1946 law governing major regulatory changes. “So, saying Florida is exempt because Rick Scott is straightforward and trustworthy? That Florida’s coastlines are unique? That seems to be the definition of arbitrary and capricious.” In an interview with The Washington Post, Zinke said that meeting was the first “in what I believe will be a series of conversations” with other governors. Cooper and Virginia Gov.-elect Ralph Northam, D, wrote letters

Where governors stand The Trump administration has proposed a vast expansion of offshore drilling that would open 90 percent of the nation’s offshore reserves to development by private companies. The plan affects at least 22 coastal states and has drawn bipartisan opposition from 15 governors and support from six, with one who is undecided. The following is a list of coastal states and the positions of their governors, with party affiliations included. (AP) Supports drilling: Maine, R; Alabama, R; Mississippi, R; Louisiana, D; Texas, R; Alaska, I. to Zinke this week requesting to be exempted from the proposal. Members of New Hampshire and Rhode Island’s congressional delegations on Thursday introduced a bill that would prohibit oil and gas drilling off the coasts of New England states. In a conference call with reporters Wednesday, Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., unloaded on Zinke and Trump, saying that Gov. Terry McAuliffe, D-Va., and Northam had asked for an exemption and heard nothing back. “Is it because the governor of Florida is a Republican and the Virginia governor and governorelect are Democrats?” Kaine asked. “Are they putting Florida off-limits because President Trump has a vacation property — Mar-a-Lago — on the Atlantic coast of Florida and he worries about the environmental risk there, but he’s not worried about environmental risk in Virginia?” (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)

Interior plans drastic changes, moving workers ENVIRONMENT Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke launched an unprecedented effort Wednesday to undertake the largest reorganization in the department’s 168-year history, moving to shift tens of thousands of workers to new locations and change the way the federal government manages more than 500 million acres of land and water across the country. The proposal would divide the U.S. into 13 regions and centralize authority for different parts of Interior within those boundaries. The regions would be defined by watersheds and geographic basins, rather than individual states and the boundaries that currently guide Interior’s operations. This new structure would be accompanied by a dramatic shift in location of the headquarters of major bureaus within Interior. Moving thousands of the department’s 70,000 employees would require congressional authorization. Zinke said the Trump administration plans to negotiate the reorganization in the upcoming budget process. Former Interior secretary Sally Jewell expressed doubt that the plan can work. The department has reasons to be centralized in certain cities, Jewell said. Agencies share real estate and leases as a cost-cutting measure. Reorganizing could come with massive costs for an agency whose budget is being dramatically cut by Trump. JULIET EILPERIN AND DARRYL FEARS (TWP)

Retailer raises hourly pay to $11, closes 63 Sam’s Club locations BUSINESS Walmart is raising its starting hourly wage from $9 to $11 and expanding its parental leave benefits, the company said Thursday. The country’s largest employer, which has more than 1 million hourly workers, said the changes were motivated by anticipated

savings from the newly passed tax plan, which offers sweeping tax cuts for corporations. Walmart is the first retailer in the S&P 500 to raise wages citing the tax law, and its across-the-board pay increases could pressure other companies to follow suit. “Tax reform gives us the opportunity to be more competitive globally and to accelerate plans for the U.S.,” Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said Thursday. Trump backs new limits on Medicaid

NATIONAL SECURITY The House voted decisively Thursday to reauthorize a powerful government authority to conduct foreign surveillance on U.S. soil, overcoming opposition from privacy advocates and confusion sown by contradictory and seemingly misinformed tweets from President Trump questioning his administration’s support for the program. The 256-to-164 vote sets up the legislation for consideration in the Senate, where leaders have said they think they can pass it before the program’s statutory authorization expires Jan. 19. The measure would extend for six years the government’s ability to collect from U.S. companies the emails and other communications of foreign targets located outside the United States. But the fate of the program appeared to be in jeopardy Thursday morning, after the president tweeted his doubts about it after seeing a segment about it on Fox News Channel. “This is the act that may have been used, with the help of the discredited and phony Dossier, to so badly surveil and abuse the Trump Campaign by the previous administration and others?” Trump wrote. He then attempted to walk back the tweet about 90 minutes later, urging lawmakers to reauthorize the program. KAROUN DEMIRJIAN AND JOSH DAWSEY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

POLITICS In a major policy shift that could affect millions of low-income people, the Trump administration said Thursday it is offering a path for states that want to impose work requirements on Medicaid recipients. Neither Maryland, Virginia nor D.C. has made such a request, according to a list provided by the administration. Seema Verma, head of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, said work and community involvement can benefit people’s lives and health. Still, the plan probably will face strong political opposition and even legal challenges over concerns that some low-income beneficiaries will lose coverage. Medicaid is a federal-state collaboration covering more than 70 million people, or about 1 in 5 Americans, making it the largest government health insurance program. It was expanded under President Obama, with an option allowing states to cover millions more low-income adults. People are not required to hold a job to be on Medicaid, but states traditionally can seek federal waivers to test new ideas

Seema Verma, head of Medicare and Medicaid Services, says new rules can help recipients’ health.

for the program. The administration’s latest action spells out safeguards that states should consider to obtain federal approval for waivers imposing work requirements on “ablebodied” adults. States can also require alternatives to work, including volunteering, caregiving, education and job training. Technically, the waivers would be “demonstration projects.” In practical terms, they would represent new requirements for beneficiaries in those states. The administration said these states have applied for waivers: Arizona, Arkansas, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Utah and Wisconsin. RICARDO ALONSO-ZALDIVAR (AP)

POST-MARIA SURGE IN KILLINGS?

32

The number of people who were slain in Puerto Rico in the first 11 days of the year, double the number killed over the same period in 2017. If the surge proves to be more than just a blip, January could be the most homicidal month on the island in at least two years, adding a dangerous new element to the island’s recovery from Hurricane Maria. Police and independent experts say many of these killings appear at least partly related to its aftereffects. (AP)

Assange becomes citizen; still living in embassy in UK

Most of jewels recovered after robbery at the Ritz

Ecuador has given citizenship to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange after years of living in asylum at the nation’s embassy in London, officials said Thursday. Ecuador said citizenship gives him another layer of protection. The country gave him asylum in 2012 after he sought refuge in its embassy to avoid extradition to Sweden for a criminal investigation. (AP)

Police on Thursday recovered most of the jewels stolen from the luxury Ritz Hotel in a dramatic heist, but were still searching for two thieves who got away and any merchandise that was still missing. The robbery Wednesday raised questions about security in one of the world’s most prestigious neighborhoods, Paris’ Place Vendome. The jewelry on display was worth $5.4 million. (AP)

NFL games in London

NFL PLAYOFFS | DIVISIONAL ROUND

Home is a danger zone

The NFL on Thursday announced three games that will be played in London this fall. After these games, the Texans, Panthers and Packers will be the only teams that haven’t made the trip. (EXPRESS)

When a ligament tore inside Carson Wentz’s left knee on Dec. 10, it created something the NFL hasn’t seen in nearly 50 years. Without their MVP candidate at quarterback, the Eagles became the league’s first home underdog in the divisional round since 1970. But Philadelphia fans aren’t the only ones who should worry. Every road team has reason to believe it can win. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

No. 5 Titans at No. 1 Patriots

No. 6 Falcons at No. 1 Eagles

8:15 p.m. Saturday, CBS

4:35 p.m. Saturday, NBC

Reason for fear: Coach Bill Belichick despises distractions. Now he’s at the center of one. A bombshell ESPN report claimed the coach could be making his last run with the team because of turmoil stemming from Tom Brady’s increasing influence on the organization. The Patriots will probably circle the wagons successfully — they’re favored by 13. But Tennessee has a shot if Dick LeBeau finds ways for Jurrell Casey and Brian Orakpo to pressure Brady.

Reason for fear: After leading Philadelphia to a win over the Rams when Wentz went down, then throwing four touchdowns in his first start this year, Nick Foles went downhill in a hurry. He completed 47 percent of his passes with one TD pass in his past two starts. So, despite possessing a defense that ranked first against the run (79.2 yards per game) and fourth in points allowed (18.4), Vegas has the Eagles as 3-point underdogs to the Falcons.

Patriots’ chances: 82 percent, according to Washington Post Fancy Stats.

Eagles’ chances: 67 percent, according to Washington Post Fancy Stats.

Eagles vs. Jaguars Two 2017 playoff teams will meet Oct. 21 or Oct. 28 at Wembley. By that time, Eli Manning, Kirk Cousins or Alex Smith might be under center for Jacksonville.

On Oct. 14, Tottenham’s new stadium hosts its first NFL game. Russell Wilson will be playing with a new offensive coordinator after Darrell Bevell was fired this week.

No. 3 Jaguars at No. 2 Steelers

No. 4 Saints at No. 2 Vikings

1:05 p.m. Sunday, CBS

4:40 p.m. Sunday, Fox

Reason for fear: Ben Roethlisberger said he doesn’t think this will be his final game at Heinz Field, but Jacksonville could be the team that makes him stop flirting with retirement and seriously consider it. After the Jaguars intercepted him five times in a 30-9 win this season in Pittsburgh, he said, “Maybe I don’t have it anymore.” The Steelers went 3-3 when “Big Ben” was sacked at least twice this season. The Jags averaged 3.4 sacks per game.

Reason for fear: The Vikings finished the season on a 10-1 run behind Case Keenum, who completed 69 percent of his passes with 18 TDs and seven picks over that stretch. But he’s never been in a playoff game, and a first-round bye could detract from Minnesota’s mojo. The Vikings’ defense ranked first in yards (275.9) and points (15.8) allowed. Saints QB Drew Brees threw for 376 yards last week and can hand off to the best tailback tandem in the NFL.

Steelers’ chances: 48 percent, according to Washington Post Fancy Stats.

Vikings’ chances: 66 percent, according to Washington Post Fancy Stats.

NBA

Celtics beat 76ers after trailing by 22 in London

Bradley Beal is the fourth-highestscoring guard in the East but was ninth in fan voting Thursday.

Kyrie Irving had 20 points, seven assists and six rebounds as the Celtics rallied to beat the 76ers 114-103 on Thursday night in the eighth NBA game played in England. JJ Redick had 22 points and hit five 3-pointers for Philadelphia, but the Celtics’ NBAbest defense clamped down at O2 Arena in London. Joel Embiid (16 points) and Ben Simmons (15) helped the 76ers hit their first nine shots of the second quarter. (AP)

DAN STEINBERG | THE WASHINGTON POST

Selfless pride: Beal won’t hype All-Star campaign Here’s one accepted truth about the 2018 Wizards: They talk too much. Produce more, pronounce less. Show, don’t tell. You get what you get, and you don’t get upset. Here’s another: Bradley Beal deserves to make his first NBA All-Star team. That means the East’s fourth-highest-scoring guard probably shouldn’t trail eight players at his position, including a pair of Cavaliers guards — Isaiah Thomas and Dwyane Wade — who entered Thursday with a combined five starts. And that the first-half MVP for the league’s ninth-best team shouldn’t have ranked 17th among Eastern Conference players in the second run of fan votes. And that a kid who will

soon break the NBA record for most 3-pointers before turning 25 is strangely underrated. Beal somehow needs to encourage more people to vote for him. Without, um, talking. Both Beal’s agent and his team have asked him to use his social-media reach to ask fans for more votes. He has declined, making only one exception: for a video starring real-life pandas — one of his nicknames — with various panda-power get-out-the-vote captions. Good luck getting him to do more than that. “If it has anything that says, ‘Vote for me,’ I’m not posting it. I’m just not posting it,” he said. “I feel like that’s kind of being conceited in a way.” With a pitch that strong, it’s a wonder Chris Christie or Martin O’Malley hasn’t yet hired Beal as a consultant.

Social disadvantage NBA fans vote for All-Stars via social media, so Wizards stars begin a few strides behind. The team’s official Twitter account has about 800,000 followers, less than a third of the Celtics and Cavaliers. On Facebook, the Wizards have about 1.5 million followers, less than a fifth of Boston’s and Cleveland’s pages. That might be why Gilbert Arenas once estimated that he personally filled out 50,000 paper ballots for his own campaign. Wall got an assist from Nicki Minaj the only year he was voted in as an All-Star starter; the pop star has far more Twitter followers than any NBA team. D.S.

“I just feel like I shouldn’t have to do that just to get votes,” Beal explained. “My game should speak for itself. ... If the accolades come, they come.” Fan voting ends Monday, but Beal is a safe bet to be picked as a reserve by the NBA’s head coaches. And it’s not like the guard doesn’t have surrogates willing to make his case. “I’ve been saying it for a year and a half now,” Wizards coach Scott Brooks said. “He’s an All-Star.” Point guard John Wall, who was sixth in voting

Men’s basketball: Georgetown visits No. 13 Seton Hall on Saturday (noon, FS1)

among Eastern guards in the total released Thursday, said Beal has been “the MVP of our team” and already “got snubbed” last year. It all makes you wonder why Beal isn’t more popular in this, his sixth season. He’s averaging a career-best 23.6 points. He hasn’t missed a game this season, avoiding the “injury-prone” label he hates and keeping the Wizards afloat while teammates struggled with injuries. Center Marcin Gortat suggested Beal could be more active on Twitter and Instagram, could try to get more endorsements and more commercials, could think more about marketing, but added that “he’s a quiet guy, family guy, so that’s why he is like that.” Beal’s platform is convincing. Just don’t expect too much from his stump speech. “I’m never the type of player who’d ask for votes, or social media blast myself out there or anything like that,” he said. “If you’re a fan, you’re a fan. If not, it is what it is.” “Beal 2018: It is what it is.” Maybe it’s just crazy enough to work. Follow Dan Steinberg on Twitter @dcsportsbog

Mets to bring back Bruce on 3-year, $39M contract Free-agent outfielder Jay Bruce is set to return to New York after agreeing to a three-year contract worth $39 million, according to multiple reports Thursday. The three-time All-Star hit a combined .254 with 36 home runs and 101 RBIs for the Mets and Indians in 2017. Bruce, who turns 31 on April 3, was traded to Cleveland last year for a pitching prospect. New Year, New home: How To Declutter Your Space

Apartment Showcase

apartmentshowcase.com

PROPERTY HIGHLIGHT

General decluttering tips • Decluttering should not be done all at once • Don’t leave things half finished • Dispose of garbage and donation piles immediately. • Just because you’ve finished decluttering your space, doesn’t mean you’re forever done decluttering • Your spaces don’t need to look “Instagrammable” for them to be decluttered and done • Prepare yourself for success, and get the right tools Photo: Mazzali via Flickr Creative Commons

W

ith the new year, comes a new mindset that we must detox and declutter our lives. When you’re living in an apartment, clutter and unnecessary items quickly pile up, and they are way more visible than in a larger home. We’ve found some tried and true methods that will help you declutter your small spaces, and that help you stick to your new year’s resolution of keeping an organized and tidy apartment.

If you’ve got way too much clothing There are two methods we use to clear out our closets. The first is the 12-12-12 method for sorting through clothing: 12 items to put away, 12 items to donate, and 12 items to toss. This method keeps you accountable to the ratio— although feel free to lessen or raise the number depending on the size of your closet. While it can be hard to throw items of clothing away, you’ll immediately feel a sense of relief that the dress you wore to your junior prom is no longer taking up space in your closet. And you’ll have a new appreciation for the items that you choose to keep. The second method we use to clear out our closets is the KonMari method from Marie Kondo. While we don’t necessarily agree with everything in her book, the method of asking yourself, “does this spark joy” is an effective one. As you move through your closet, or even try the 12-12-12 method, ask yourself, does this item make me happy, and if not, why do I still have it? This will help determine which items to toss and which to keep. This method can be practiced throughout your apartment, not just the closet. It’s proven very effective on the “random” drawer in my kitchen. After clearing out your closet, leave about 10% of it empty, for future purchases. You’ll feel

better about that next shopping trip when your closet isn’t already overflowing, and when you already know there’s a space set aside for that new purchase.

Ifyoufeellikeyouhave“stuff”everywhere We all accumulate stuff throughout our days, whether its promotional pens, fliers, magazines, or knick-knacks. These often unnecessary things are either left out and about to make your apartment look messy and cluttered, or they’re shoved into drawers, that then overflow once they hit capacity. To minimize the amount of stuff in your apartment, first make a commitment to no longer bring it back into your space. If the stuff can be thrown out before entering your apartment, do it. Then, take a sweep of your space and see what the visible culprits are. Are these things necessary items, or can they be tossed? Walk around your space with a garbage bag and be ruthless. Your space will be noticeably cleaner and more organized without them. When it’s time to tackle the random stuff drawers, you should also be ruthless. Anything that is expired, unnecessary, or garbage should be tossed. Do an initial sweep to throw these things out, and then do another sweep to organize what is left into categories. When you look at all your random drawer stuff sectioned off, you’ll often notice duplicates or more unnecessary items. Toss them! Be on the lookout for old batteries, charging cords that you no longer need, or manuals to appliances you never use.

Ifyourkitchencouldusesomeattention If you’re setting new eating goals for the new year, organizing your kitchen is especially important. Before you get started, make sure the dishes are clean and put away, and your

countertops are cleared off. Do an initial sweep of your kitchen cabinets for anything expired, Tupperwares missing lids, chipped glassware, and any tools or foods that you’ve never used. Everything expired or incomplete should go in the trash. Any food or applicance that can be donated should be put in a separate bag. Next take a look through your pantry. Are there opened bags or boxes that need to be thrown out? Are there packages that are taking up too much space, that can be unpacked? Can you organize each section of a shelf by type of food? Mason jars and other storage containers can be useful to house loose items in a pantry. Move on to your other drawers and cabinets, and stay vigilant. Are there things you never use? Are there seasonal appliances or molds that can be stored? Has your kitchen island or table become a receptacle for junk or mail? Go through any piles and throw out what needs to be thrown out, and move any important mail or items to their proper place. If you have cookbooks you don’t use that are taking up space on your kitchen counters, consider moving them to another area of your apartment. Save your refrigerator for last, and be diligent about throwing away anything that has a questionable expiration date. Clear everything out of the fridge and give it a good wipe down, before returning the items. For good measure, replace your kitchen sink sponge, restock your paper towel supply, and throw your kitchen towels into the wash. Hopefully these decluttering tips will leave you and your apartment feeling refreshed and as organized as the day you moved in! ■ By Nikki Blank for Apartment Showcase

Reynolds (Daniel Day-Lewis) keeps Alma (Vicky Krieps) firmly in his grasp in “Phantom Thread.”

ALSO OPENING

FOCUS FEATURES

‘Paddington’ keeps on charming

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

‘Phantom’ menace: It might not look like abuse, but it is I have seen Reynolds Woodcock, the character played by Daniel Day-Lewis at the center of “Phantom Thread,” described by other critics as “exacting,” “meticulous,” “rigid” and “insatiable.” He is all of those things. He is also emotionally abusive. Reynolds is a fashion designer in 1950s London. His work is for royals and rich people; “Project Runway” this isn’t. During a mini-break at his country home, he meets Alma (Vicky Krieps), a waitress impressed by, among other things, his hearty breakfast order. He makes her a custom dress. She moves in. That’s where the trouble begins.

Except no, that’s not where the trouble begins. The trouble begins on their first date, when he wipes off her lipstick. “I like to see who I’m talking to,” he says. When he takes her measurements, he notes that she has small breasts, but no worry: “My job is to give you some. If I choose to.” From the very beginning, she is wrong. But it’s not her fault; he just knows better. For her part, Alma is proud of how she can sustain her relationship with Reynolds, both as model and muse (I believe it is required by law that every piece of writing about “Phantom Thread” must refer to Alma as a muse at least once). “I can stand endlessly,” she tells a visitor. “No one else can stand as long as I can.” The implied dual meaning — stand

like a mannequin, stand Reynolds’ temperament and temper tantrums — becomes ominous. She butters her toast too loudly; she pours tea from such a height that it sounds like a lapsang souchong-steeped pipe has burst. She has bad taste in fabric, Reynolds tells her. She learns, though; it doesn’t take her long to embrace a life of quiet buttering. She tailors herself to fit Reynolds, earning his approval. The first time we see them kiss is after she,

‘Phantom Thread’ (R, 130 min.)

DIRECTOR: Paul Thomas Anderson STARS: Daniel Day-Lewis, Lesley Manville, Vicky Krieps IN A NUTSHELL: A dressmaker in 1950s London finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love. QUICK TAKE: “Phantom Thread” is a delicious slice of teatime Gothic, but although it’s an indulgence to watch — it’s such an ode to pleasure and beauty, cinematic and otherwise — it isn’t always satisfying. Yet it still delivers, especially as a haunting evocation of avidity, appetite and aesthetic pursuit at its most rarefied. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Five women accuse James Franco of inappropriate behavior and sexual exploitation in LA Times report

at his order, immediately and willingly removes one of his dresses from a drunk client he deems unworthy of wearing his design. When Alma speaks up, she is shouted down. When she asks for something, she is denied. Of course, Reynolds reminds her, she doesn’t have to stay — but he’s already made her think she’s crazy for ever wanting to leave. And when she does attempt to go, Reynolds is there with just the right “romantic” gesture to win her back. And she does go back. Movies about emotional abuse usually have the victim suffering in silence. Alma doesn’t. When she does fight back in her own subtly vicious way, though, it’s easy to misread the relationship as simply tumultuous rather than abusive. Alma is strong, sometimes angry and often even happy — but Reynolds’ behavior is still abuse. Alma puts a face on emotional abuse we don’t often see in movies: She proves that one can smile, and smile, and be a victim.

“Paddington 2,” the family-friendly sequel to the 2014 film about a talking bear cub, is a delight, from its first action-packed frames to its over-the-top jailhouse-musical scene during the closing credits. This time around, the beloved title character (voiced by Ben Whishaw) winds up in prison after being falsely accused of stealing — a crime actually committed by the villainous dandy played by Hugh Grant. As with the first installment, based on Michael Bond’s series of children’s books, the sequel is stunning to look at, with inventive, colorful sets and crafty interludes. The film also leans heavily on a simplistic message: There’s almost always good in everyone. STEPHANIE MERRY (TWP)

FILM REVIEW The fourth — and least satisfying — collaboration between director Jaume Collet-Serra and Liam Neeson (after “Unknown,” “Non-Stop” and “Run All Night”), “The Commuter” places Neeson’s action hero, this time an insurance salesman and ex-cop named Mike MacCauley, on the 6:25 train home from Manhattan to suburban New York. As the train is just pulling out of Grand Central Terminal, a mysterious woman named Joanna (Vera Farmiga) approaches Mike, offering him $100,000 — hypothetically, as she puts it — if he can identify a passenger she knows only as “Prynne,” who is carrying a bag containing something stolen. Mike has until Cold Spring station, 50 miles or so up the Hudson, to figure it out. At the next stop, she steps off the train, leaving Mike, and viewers, scratching our heads.

‘The Commuter’ (PG-13, 105 min.) DIRECTOR: Jaume Collet-Serra STARS: Liam Neeson, Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Elizabeth McGovern IN A NUTSHELL: A man is forced into playing along with a deadly criminal conspiracy on his commute home.

Turns out, Joanna’s proposal is not hypothetical, as Mike receives a $25,000 down payment waiting for him in the restroom, and then a message from a street urchin who appears at the next station, asking him, on behalf of Farmiga’s vanishing lady, if he has accepted the task. It becomes clear that Mike has no choice, as he learns that his wife and son are being held hostage as leverage. What’s more, whenever Mike tries to wriggle out of his task by notifying authorities or seeking help, someone on the train dies.

LIONSGATE

Liam Neeson’s ‘The Commuter’ is one nonsensical ride through hell Here’s a more pertinent and confounding hypothetical: Why, if Joanna wants “Prynne” dead, does she go to the trouble of making Mike do her dirty work, when it would be far simpler to just blow up the train? She’s clearly not concerned with surgical precision, as the death toll mounts onboard the locomotive, whose systems seem to be under her remote control. The answer is that the story (by Byron Willinger, Philip de Blasi and Ryan Engle) does not exist to serve the needs of logic, but those of Neeson, who, as has become his habit in this sort of thing, delivers, at minimum, a modicum of guilty pleasure as the Everyman in a tight spot. Here, those gratifications are minimal, as the actor’s appeal — normally on display as grit, integrity and butt-kicking — is not enough to overcome the story’s nonsensical premise. ‘Teen Titans Go! to the Movies’

‘Truth or Dare’

EXPECTED RELEASE: July 27

EXPECTED RELEASE: April 27

SUMMARY: If you’re not watching “Teen Titans Go!” on Cartoon Network, you’re missing out on the savviest show since “Animaniacs.” Now the Titans are set on making their own movie; the only problem is four of them want to be in “Wonder Woman.” Join them as they fight crime, build friendships and make fart jokes. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: Just when you thought the titular game was just a harmless way to find out who your friend LIKE-likes or to get two girls to kiss, it seems the teen party silliness has turned lethal. A group of kids start to play, and then they start dying in really grotesque, genuinely creepy ways. They still have time to dare two girls to kiss, though. Whew. K.P.K.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
