British butcher has no doubt — frozen sausage can be a lifesaver
First responders in North Port, Fla., had an unusual task last week — rescuing the occupants of a car that left the road and crashed into a beekeeper’s box hives. “This caused huge issues with getting to the vehicle, as there were thousands of bees swarming the area,” police said on Facebook. The car’s two occupants were rescued after firefighters used high-pressure foam spray to clear the bees swarming the vehicle, UPI reported. (EXPRESS)
Bernadette Hall-Cuaron of Albuquerque, N.M., has a gripe about the local Catholic church, which has rooftop speakers. She says new electronic bells that chime 20 to 25 times a day and the constant playing of “Amazing Grace” drive her nuts. “This is not calling people to the church,” she said. “It’s keeping them from wanting to go to the church because it’s so annoying.” The Rev. Joe Vigil said last week that he’s reducing the volume. (AP)
Butcher Chris McCabe of Devon, England, was locked in his walk-in freezer last month after the wind blew the door shut. But he escaped by hammering open the lock with a frozen sausage. He said the safety button to open the door had frozen in the chill of 4 below zero, so he busted open the lock with a 3-pound black pudding, a form of blood sausage. “It was solid, pointed and I could get plenty of weight behind it,” he said. THE DISTRICT The Mall is studded with monuments to iconic people and events, from presidents to wars to civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. Later this month, finalists will be announced for a memorial to a group with less name recognition: Native American veterans. In the 20th century, Native Americans served in the United States military at a higher per capita rate than any other ethnic group, and their service stretches back to the Revolutionary War. The National Native American Veterans Memorial will be built at the National Museum of the American Indian. Congress approved the erection of the memorial in 1994, but it did not authorize fundraising for it until 2013. It is scheduled to be unveiled on Veterans Day in 2020. Museum staff and members of an advisory committee traveled around the country, meeting

with tribal leaders and veterans, and came back with a few directives: Be inclusive of all tribes and traditions; don’t leave out women; remember the sacrifices of family members; and include an element of spirituality. The design must be broad enough to encompass the vast array of tribes (567 are federally recognized) yet specific enough that veterans and their families will recognize themselves and their stories. That will not be easy for the
panel of experts tasked with selecting the design. For example, to some tribes, horses were integral, while others never rode them. The placement of the memorial is significant, said Jefferson Keel, lieutenant governor of the Chickasaw Nation, who is cochair of the committee. “Anyone who goes out of the Capitol, down those steps, that will be the first thing they see. To me, that’s exciting.” TARA BAHRAMPOUR (THE WASHINGTON POST)
The peaceful transfer of power in Virginia would not be complete without a prank pulled by the outgoing governor on his successor. So it was that as newly inaugurated Gov. Ralph Northam, D, hit the sack Saturday night after his inauguration, he found an image of former governor Terry McAuliffe, D, plastered on his pillowcase. It was even emblazoned with one of the ex-governor’s favorite sayings: “Sleep when you’re dead.” In addition, an alarm went off in the house at 3 a.m. “I texted [McAuliffe] and thanked him, and he said there was more to come,” Northam said. L Light snow is likely to begin late this afternoon into early evening. It will spread across the D.C. region from west to east, entering the western and northern suburbs in the afternoon and hitting the city between 6 and 8 p.m. By mid-morning Wednesday, the snow should be history for most areas. The most likely scenario is a dusting to 2 inches, with the heaviest snow falling north of the city. (TWP)

State panel votes down push for stricter gun laws
A 14-year-old boy was shot and killed in Southeast D.C. on Sunday, police said. Steven Slaughter was just a few blocks from his home when he was shot, D.C. police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said. The attack took place in the same Anacostia neighborhood where on Monday local leaders honored Martin Luther King Jr. Sternbeck said it does not appear Slaughter was the shooter’s intended target, but the investigation is still in its early stages. (TWP)
A Virginia state Senate panel has defeated a Democratic push for stricter gun laws. A Republican-led panel voted Monday to block legislation that would allow cities and counties to ban firearms at certain public events. The bill came in response to a violent white nationalist rally in Charlottesville last summer where several participants were heavily armed. The panel also voted down a bill to expand mandatory background checks on gun buyers. (AP)

Red Line derailment brings safety worries Metro: Broken rail likely caused train carrying 63 to come off track TRANSPORTATION A preliminary investigation found Monday morning’s derailment of a Red Line train was probably caused by a broken rail, Metro officials said. They said the train derailed as it passed over the damaged section. Officials said three of the train’s eight cars — all from the rear of the train — left the tracks. The early-morning derailment of the train carrying 63 people raised new questions about the millions invested in the year-long SafeTrack maintenance program that was meant to improve safety and reliability of the system. The derailment happened just after 6:30 a.m. as the train left the Farragut North station, along one of Metro’s busiest stretches of track downtown. One passenger was evaluated for shortness of breath, but there were no serious injuries, authorities said. Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said the train was a 7000-series, the newest in the agency’s fleet. “All indications are that this is gonna be a track-related incident,” Stessel said. Red Line ser service er continued
to run Monday with delays. For a brief time, shuttle buses filled gaps in service. Metro officials said trains are expected to run every 10 minutes today between Glenmont and Shady Grove. Passengers on Monday’s derailed train said it was immediately evident that the train had come off the tracks. Alan Devlin, a 37-year-old attorney who was headed into the office from his home in Cleveland Park, said that shortly after the train left the Farragut North station, there was a loud bang followed by “unusual stuttering” and then a weird lurch. That was followed by smoke and a strong electrical smell.
“There’s a moment where you’re thinking, ‘Is this about to get worse or better?’ ” he said. The incident could further complicate Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld’s efforts to secure $15.5 billion — including $500 million in permanent annual funding — to ensure the system’s safety and reliability. Metro board chairman Jack Evans, who was briefed by Wiedefeld, was shocked by the news. “It’s like, God, didn’t we do all of the fixing, the bad areas, SafeTrack?” he said. “All that stuff was intended to prevent stuff like this from happening.” LORI ARATANI AND FAIZ SIDDIQUI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

BALTIMORE The man who said he came to the aid of a visibly disoriented woman discharged from a Baltimore hospital wearing only a gown and socks on a frigid winter’s night said Friday that she has been reunited with her family. supposed to be discharged from a hospital with no clothing on and no shoes,” he said during a Friday interview in his office. Baraka said he’s been in regular contact with the 22-year-old woman’s mother, who is grateful for his intervention, since his video went viral. The video alerted the woman to the whereabouts of her daughter, who had been missing for two weeks, he said. When asked for any updates to the hospital’s internal review, spokeswoman Lisa Clough said the administration is continuing its investigation and are “working to ensure that such a situation does not happen again.” DAVID MCFADDEN (AP)

Hogan creates new office to deal with paid sick leave
The roof of the Merriweather Post Pavilion, one of the region’s bestknown outdoor entertainment venues, crashed to the ground early Saturday while it was in the last stages of being raised to a new position. No injuries were reported in the collapse at the amphitheater in Columbia, Md. Work on the roof was part of a five-year renovation project. Venue operator Seth Hurwitz said in a statement that “the winds of fate prevailed” and a new pavilion roof will be built. He said the 2018 season will open as planned.
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan is creating a state office to assist small businesses in response to legislation mandating paid sick leave for workers. The General Assembly last week passed the legislation, overriding Hogan’s veto. The law applies to all businesses in Maryland with more than 15 employees, allowing workers to earn up to five paid sick days a year. Hogan, a Republican, responded Monday by creating the Office of Small Business Regulatory Assistance. He said he wants the office to help small businesses cope with the law’s impact. (AP)

Activists decry racism, Trump on MLK holiday King children denounce the president’s recent immigration remarks CIVIL RIGHTS Martin Luther King Jr.’s children decried disparaging remarks President Trump is said to have made about African countries, while disputes broke out between Haitian immigrants and Trump supporters near the president’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Monday, the federal holiday honoring King. Trump was staying at the resort for the weekend. At gatherings across the nation, activists, residents and teachers honored the late civil rights leader on what would have been his 89th birthday and ahead of the 50th anniversary of his assassination in Memphis, Tenn.
In Oklahoma, the Cherokee Nation marked Martin Luther King Jr. Day with events aimed at coming to terms with its own history of slavery and by welcoming descendants of former slaves into the tribe. Trump marked his first King holiday as president buffeted by claims that during a meeting on immigration last week, he used a vulgarity to describe African countries and questioned the need to allow more Haitians into the U.S. He asked why the U.S. couldn’t have more immigrants from nations like Norway. Trump defended himself Sunday, saying, “I’m not a racist.” In Washington, King’s eldest son, Martin Luther King III, criticized Trump, saying, “When a president insists that our nation needs more citizens from white
states like Norway, I don’t even think we need to spend any time even talking about what it says and what it is.” In Atlanta, King’s daughter, the Rev. Bernice King, told hundreds of people at the Ebenezer Baptist Church that they “cannot allow the nations of the world to embrace the words that come from our president as a reflection of the true spirit of America.” “We are one people, one nation, one blood, one destiny,” she added. Trump dedicated his weekly address to the nation, released Monday, to King: “Dr. King’s dream is our dream, it is the American dream,” he said. “It is the dream of a world where people are judged by who they are, not how they look or where they come from.” JONATHAN LANDRUM JR. Researchers have discovered 16 shreds of paper bearing legible printing that somehow survived three centuries underwater on the famed pirate Blackbeard’s flagship vessel. After a year of research, they were identified as fragments of a book about nautical voyages published in the 1700s. Conservators for the ship Queen Anne’s Revenge found the paper fragments wedged inside the chamber for a breech-loading cannon. The vessel ran aground in what was then the colony of North Carolina in June 1718. (AP)

Trump denies $130K deal to silence porn actress President Trump’s lawyer Michael Cohen brokered a $130,000 payment to a porn actress a month before the election to stop her from publicly discussing an alleged sexual encounter with Trump, according to a report Friday in The Wall Street Journal. Trump met Stephanie Clifford, also known as Stormy Daniels, in 2006, a year after he married his wife, Melania. Another porn actress, Alana Evans, said Clifford told her of the encounter a day after it occurred, according to a story Friday in The Daily Beast. Cohen and the White House denied the Journal’s story. (AP) POLITICS
Trump drops plan to visit new embassy in London President Trump has canceled a trip to London to open the new $1 billion U.S. Embassy in the British capital. Some U.K. lawmakers had said Trump was not welcome in Britain after he retweeted videos from a far-right British group and criticized London Mayor Sadiq Khan following a terror attack last year. Trump said his decision was due to concerns about the embassy’s move from the elite Mayfair district to a far less fashionable area of London. (AP) CALIFORNIA

A mezzanine floor inside the Jakarta Stock Exchange tower collapsed on Monday, injuring nearly 80 people and forcing a chaotic evacuation. Security camera footage circulated online showed the collapse, with a group of people plunging several feet to the ground as the structure gave way beneath them. Wasisto ruled out terrorism as a cause of the collapse. Figures released by five hospitals showed 77 people were injured. (AP)
Turkey’s president Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday denounced U.S. plans to form a 30,000-strong Kurdish-led border security force in Syria, vowing to “drown this army of terror before it is born,” as Russia and Syria also rejected the idea. Erdogan also warned U.S. troops against coming between Turkish troops and Kurdish forces, which Ankara views as an extension of Turkey’s own Kurdish insurgency. Turkey has been threatening to launch a new military operation against the main Syrian Kurdish militia, known as the People’s Defense Units, in the Kurdish-held Afrin enclave in northern Syria. (AP)

The explosion ripped through the homes late in the evening. Antwerp police quickly announced that the blast was not part of a terror attack. At least one building totally collapsed. Error reveals true fear
Missile-alert blunder exposes people’s uncertainty about what to do if threat were real Casino company shuttle boat fire kills 1 passenger
ANTHONY QUINTANO (CIVIL BEAT VIA AP)
NATIONAL SECURITY When Jonathan Scheuer got an alert on his phone of a ballistic missile headed for Hawaii, he and his family didn’t know what to do. They went to their guest bedroom, then decided it would be safer on the ground floor of their Honolulu home. “What do we do?” he wondered. “Where do we go?” People should immediately seek shelter in a building “or other substantial structure” once an attack-warning siren sounds, according to guidance the state distributed previously. The state recommends having a 14-day survival kit of food and water. Residents and tourists alike remained rattled after the mistaken alert was blasted out Saturday morning to cellphones across the islands with a warning to seek immediate shelter and the ominous statement: “This is not a drill.” “Clearly, there is a massive gap between letting people know something’s coming and having something for them to do,” Scheuer said. “Nobody knew what to do.” Lisa Foxen, a mother of two in east Honolulu, said the best thing to come out of the scare was that it pushed her family to come up with a plan if there is a real threat. “I kind of was … like a deer in headlights,” she said. “I knew what to do in a hurricane. I knew what to do in an earthquake. But the missile thing is new to me.” The blunder that caused more than a million people in Hawaii to fear that they were about to be struck by a nuclear missile fed skepticism Sunday about the government’s ability to keep them informed in a real emergency. “My confidence in our socalled leaders’ ability to disseminate this vital information has certainly been tarnished,” said

Patrick Day, who sprang from bed when the alert was issued. “I would have to think twice before acting on any future advisory.” The erroneous warning was sent during a shift change at the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency when someone doing a routine test hit the live alert button, state officials said. That employee has been reassigned to a job without access to the warning system amid an internal investigation, agency spokesman Richard Rapoza said Monday. No other personnel changes have been made, he said. Officials tried to assure residents there would be no repeat false alarms. The agency changed protocols to require that two people send an alert and made it easier to cancel a false alarm — a process that took nearly 40 minutes Saturday. The error sparked a doomsday panic across the islands. Parents clutched their children, huddled
In case of an attack … Here are steps you can take before and during a nuclear strike. Plan ahead: FEMA and the CDC both have long emergency-kit checklists, which include first-aid supplies, a radio and flashlights. Make a plan for contacting family and friends and for meeting up after a disaster. And ask local officials where there are designated fallout shelters. Get underground: A basement offers more protection than the first floor. Close windows and turn off heating and cooling units. Expect to stay inside for 24 hours after a nuclear blast. In areas with the heaviest fallout, it might be necessary to shelter in place for up to a month. If outside: Don’t look at the fireball; it can blind you. Lie flat on the ground and cover your head. If the explosion is far away, it could take 30 seconds for the blast wave to reach you. Take shelter as soon as possible and remove clothing to keep radioactive material from spreading. (TWP)

President Trump, who was off for a golf weekend at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, told reporters Sunday that he was pleased that Hawaii officials “took responsibility.” Although he said the federal government would now “get involved,” he did not say how. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen urged Americans not to lose faith in their government. “I would hate for anybody not to abide by alerts and warnings coming from government systems,” Nielsen said on “Fox News Sunday.” ‘’They can trust government systems. We test them every day. This is a very unfortunate mistake, but these alerts are vital. Seconds and minutes can save lives.” JENNIFER SINCO KELLEHER AND BRIAN MELLEY (AP)
TAMPA, FLA. A casino company said Monday it never had a problem with the shuttle boat that burst into flames off Florida’s Gulf Coast, leading to the death of a female passenger. Tropical Breeze Casino spokeswoman Beth Fifer said the company does not know what caused Sunday’s huge blaze, which gutted the 12-yearold shuttle boat and forced about 50 passengers to jump into chilly waters off Port Richey. “We are deeply saddened for the loss of our passenger, the 14 injured and anyone else who was affected by this tragedy,” Fifer said. Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point spokesman Kurt Conover said Monday that the passenger arrived at the hospital’s emergency room at 10 p.m. Sunday and died shortly afterward. He said she had apparently gone home after the fire but became ill. Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Michael De Nyse said investigators will determine the cause of the fire and examine the history of the boat and casino. The shuttle boat regularly carried people back and forth from the Tropical Breeze’s offshore casino, about a 45-minute ride into international waters. The shuttle boat caught fire about 4 p.m. Sunday, quickly engulfing the boat close to shore near residential neighborhoods. Officials said the boat was headed out to the casino ship. (AP)

Coaching rumors

Lesson of playoffs: Teams don’t need pricey QBs to win The NFL playoffs are showing the Redskins that they might not need a highpriced quarterback after all. The combined salaries of the four passers who will start in conference championship games Sunday barely exceed the $24 million that Washington paid Kirk Cousins this season. New England’s Tom Brady earns $14 million for the 2017 season. Jaguars starter Blake Bortles makes $6.57 million in the last year of his rookie deal. Case Keenum, who came to Minnesota as a presumed thirdstringer, makes $2 million. Philadelphia’s Nick Foles gets $1.6 million on a backup’s deal. So, who’s ready to see the Redskins pay $34 million to bring Cousins back on a third straight franchise tag? Even if the team can get Cousins to agree to a long-term deal, it will average around $30 million. Maybe improving the Redskins’ defensive line and running game is a better path to the postseason.
Three of the top four teams in total defense are one win away from the Super Bowl. Minnesota finished first, allowing 275.9 yards per game in the regular season. Jacksonville was second (286.1), and Philadelphia was fourth (306.5). Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger and New Orleans’ Drew Brees — both likely headed for the Hall of Fame — lost Sunday despite putting up big numbers. Roethlisberger passed for 469 yards and five touchdowns with one interception. Brees threw three TDs, albeit with two picks. Keenum threw only one score — a 61-yard miracle to Stefon Diggs as time ran out. The Jaguars upset the Steelers behind three running touchdowns by Leonard Fournette, a rookie first-round pick who led the league’s No. 1 rushing offense. Pittsburgh roughed up the Jags’ secondary, but Jacksonville’s defense is the biggest reason for the franchise’s turnaround. The Jaguars are 10-3 when they score at least 20 points. The Eagles’ defense has helped offset the loss of QB

The Patriots have been in the top 10 in scoring defense in each of Matt Patricia’s seven years as coordinator. ESPN reported that Detroit expects to hire the 43-year-old.
From top, Case Keenum, Nick Foles and Blake Bortles combine to make less than Redskins QB Kirk Cousins but will all battle for a conference title.
Carson Wentz. Philly shut out Atlanta in the second half Saturday, producing a goal line stand at the end. Foles, a classic game manager, didn’t account for a touchdown but didn’t turn the ball over in a 15-10 win. Keenum will join Cousins as one of the top prospective free agents of 2018. That is, if the Vikings don’t franchise him. The past weekend proves that following an expensive quarterback isn’t the only path to success. That will surely
reinforce the Redskins’ reservations about committing too many resources to Cousins. Maybe Cousins’ price tag is justifiable for a team like Denver, which is only a quarterback away from contending. But Washington is several pieces away. Prioritizing the defense and finding a running back may be a better blueprint.

Ditch the New Year diet Five reasons to opt out of a restrictive eating plan in 2018, and what to do instead NUTRITION January, aka National Dieting Month, is upon us. But before you sign up for another a restrictive eating plan, here are five reasons to opt out of diet culture this year.
better health, or the behaviors people adopt in an effort to lose weight, such as better nutrition and regular physical activity.
Diets don’t work
Dieting doesn’t help you develop sustainable habits. When you treat nutrition and physical activity only as a means to weight loss, you’re not likely to eat well or be active if your attempts don’t lead to the results you want — and you’re more likely to return to old habits even if you do lose weight.
Anyone who says they have found the proven way to lose weight and keep it off is selling snake oil, and counting on repeat customers. When you restrict calories enough to drop below your body’s natural “set point” weight range, your body will push back, causing you to regain weight. Over time, repeatedly losing and regaining weight (yo-yo dieting) may leave your health in a worse place than if you never dieted.
Weight does not equal health People can be healthy or unhealthy at both lower and higher weights. Even in research that shows an association between weight loss and improved health, it’s unclear whether it’s the weight loss that’s responsible for
Dieting gets in the way of lasting change
It takes up mental bandwidth Why spend precious time obsessively logging your food and tracking your calories or macros or beating yourself up because you ate food that’s not “allowed”? Dieting to improve body image is futile, and any new self-esteem will evaporate when you regain weight.
It can lead to bingeing Dieting and food restriction have
Say no to weight stigma Weight stigma is toxic. It may be responsible for most of the health problems that are typically ascribed to higher body weights. Why? Because people who take weight stigma to heart are less likely to seek preventive health care and more likely to engage in behaviors that harm them. We can all benefit from increasing compassion, acceptance and respect for all people, of all body sizes — including ourselves. C.D.
been shown to increase the risk of binge eating. When you feel deprived, you’re more likely to overeat once you stop restricting. Here are three things you can do to move toward health and away from dieting.
Investigate intuitive eating Babies and very young children instinctively know when and how much to eat, based on innate hunger and fullness cues. We start to unlearn those cues once
we’re encouraged to eat “just three more bites” or to clean our plate. The good news is that intuitive eating is a skill we can relearn, and the outcome is far more fruitful than what comes from continuing to diet.
Focus on wellness Embrace new habits that are good for whole-body health regardless of whether they lead to a change in weight. Eating foods that provide balanced nutrition, are delicious and leave you feeling good has inherent value. So does moving your body regularly.

4 healthy food twists Consider the following additions of flavor to some common favorite foods for a healthier kick. A simple change in taste may make a big impact. JAE BERMAN (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)
Cinnamon and coconut If you’re accustomed to adding sugar to a typical breakfast such as oats, cereal or yogurt, try adding shaved coconut and cinnamon for a new taste that isn’t as sweet.
Sweet berries and balsamic vinegar A different twist on a dessert is sweet berries, balsamic vinegar and black pepper. It creates an entirely different experience for a sweet tooth.
Vinegar and spice Most salad dressings rely on the oil and added sugars and salts to create flavor. Make your own dressing and emphasize a vinegar with an ingredient, like Dijon mustard, oregano or garlic.
Carrots and ginger When roasting, steaming or sauteing carrots, add fresh peeled and sliced ginger for a different dimension to a common vegetable.
Cultivate body respect When you diet, you are trying to make changes from a place of body hatred. This year, why not work on making changes from a place of body respect ct and acceptance? People who acccept their size — regardless of what that size is — tend to take ke better care of themselves and d enjoy better health. CARRIE DENNETT TT (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK
I’m really sick … and really scared Q. No one ever addresses this issue: anxiety about a health problem that is real, rather than health anxiety about a potential problem. What do you do with anxiety about an actual problem? WONDERING With all our cultural focus on hypochondriac-ish behavior (“A Google search says I have Bitcoin Disease!”), what often gets lost is that for people living with very real illnesses, their anxiety can be all-consuming too. In fact, it’s something that therapists see a lot. So, yes, therapy: Just because anxiety is justifiable doesn’t mean it can’t be helped with treatment. Like the depressive
symptoms of grief, stress from a health condition is natural and human, but can still very much be worked on. In these cases, cognitive behavioral therapy would involve being realistic about the challenges of the situation, and finding ways to cope much better and exert more autonomy. That leads to increased hope, more resilience and better day-today emotional tools in managing the illness.
Sarah and I are much more compatible in personality than our other sister, Jen. Jen just doesn’t click with us. Every time Sarah and I do things together, my parents seem hurt. My mother tells us we should “include” Jen as if we are 5. My father reminds us that “family is everything.” How do I stop feeling guilty for this? FEELING LIKE A CHILD Forgiving yourself for “falling short” in a parent’s eyes is a common challenge. Does Jen know they fixate on this, and what is her reaction? It sounds like it could be condescending and infantilizing for her; might she need a say? If you give your parents more of what they dream of when you are together — engaging in traditions they like, showing interest in Jen since you don’t see each other as often — it may lessen their “Our three daughters aren’t all BFFs, so we’ve failed!” mindset. You can keep the “love” part of your relationship with Jen strong by doing sisterly stuff (extra-nice birthday cards, etc.) that don’t necessitate spending time together. Beyond that, it’s a matter of giving yourself permission to live your life on your terms. Send questions to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@wpost .com. Andrea is a licensed clinical psychologist and hosts a live chat Tuesdays at 1 p.m. at washingtonpost.com. Your questions may be used in the chats.

Dolores O’Riordan of The Cranberries dies

1971-2018 Dolores O’Riordan, who fronted the Irish alternative band The Cranberries that became an international sensation in the 1990s, died Monday. She was 46. O’Riordan “died suddenly” in London, where she had been for a short recording session, according to a statement released by the band. The cause of death hasn’t been made public. “No further details are available at this time,” the statement read. “Family members are devastated to hear the breaking news and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.” The Cranberries, known for hits including “Zombie” and “Linger,” formed in 1989 in Limerick. The group’s 1993 debut album, “Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?,” became a huge commercial success. Since its founding, the band has released seven studio albums and sold more than 40 million copies worldwide. Irish President Michael D. Higgins released a statement offering condolences and noting O’Riordan and The Cranberries’ “immense influence on rock and pop music in Ireland and internationally.” O’Riordan was born Sept. 6, 1971, and wrote her first song at

age 12. “If I started to sing, then all the others in the room would stop and listen,” she told Rolling Stone in 1995. “I always had a strong Irish accent, too. People often ask me why I sing with a strong Irish accent. I suppose when I was 5 years old, I spoke with a strong Irish accent, so I sang with one, too.” O’Riordan joined guitarist Noel Hogan, bassist Mike Hogan and drummer Fergal Lawler when she replaced departing frontman Niall Quinn in what was then called Cranberry Saw Us. The first song O’Riordan wrote with the band was “Linger.” The Cranberries went on a hiatus in 2003 and O’Riordan
released two solo albums. The group reunited in 2009. In April 2017, The Cranberries released a compilation album that included acoustic versions of their hits. Several months later, the band canceled most of its summer and fall tour dates due to “O’Riordan’s recovery from her ongoing back problem.” On Dec. 20, O’Riordan posted a message on the band’s Facebook: “Feeling good! I did my first bit of gigging in months at the weekend, performed a few songs at the Billboard annual staff holiday party in New York with the house band. Really enjoyed it! Happy Christmas to all our fans!! Xo.”
“My fellow actresses stood by me and stood up for me, my activist friends taught me to use my voice, and the most powerful men in charge, they listened and they acted.” MICHELLE WILLIAMS, in a statement after Mark Wahlberg and the two actors’ agency announced a joint donation of $2 million to the Time’s Up fund in the wake of an outcry over Wahlberg and Williams’ pay disparity for “All the Money in the World” reshoots

Ansari responds to misconduct accusation ALLEGATIONS Comedian Aziz Ansari has responded to allegations of sexual impropriety detailed in a weekend report, saying in a statement that his encounter with a woman “by all indications was completely consensual.” In a piece published Saturday on babe.net, a 23-year-old photographer from Brooklyn described a date with the comic that allegedly ended with him forcefully kissing her in his home and repeatedly trying to have sex. She told the outlet it was “painful” watching Ansari accept his Golden Globe while wearing a Time’s Up pin in support of combating sexual harassment and assault in the workplace. “I believe that I was taken advantage of by Aziz,” the woman told babe.net. “I was not listened to, and ignored. It was by far the worst experience with a man I’ve ever had.” Ansari confirmed, via his statement, that he had met the woman at a September party and went on a date that ended with sexual activity. “The next day, I got a text from her saying that although ‘it may have seemed okay,’ upon further reflection, she felt uncomfortable,” he said. “It was true that everything did seem okay to me, so when I heard that it was not the case for her, I was surprised and concerned. I took her words to heart and responded privately after taking the time to process what she had said.” ELAHE IZADI (TWP)
