With Unity Plea, Huntsman Quits Democratic group United Wisconsin will mark the end of gathering petitions to recall Gov. Scott Walker on Tuesday. Organizers gathered more than the needed 540,208 signatures.

I$9$ Fh_cWho South Carolinians will vote Saturday for one of the five remaining GOP presidential candidates — Mitt Romney, Ron Paul, Rick Perry, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich — in the nation’s first-inthe-South primary.

M^Wj ?j 7bb C[Wdi Jon Huntsman’s departure leaves unanswered the overriding question of the Republican campaign: whether voters looking for a candidate more conservative than Mitt Romney will unite behind Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich or Rick Perry and send a strong challenger to compete against Romney in the Florida primary or beyond. Polls in South Carolina showed Romney in the lead, followed by Gingrich, with Santorum and Texas Rep. Ron Paul fighting for third. (AP)

9ebkcX_W" I$9$ Republican Jon Huntsman’s endorsement of Mitt Romney further cements Romney as the favorite in Saturday’s pivotal South Carolina primary, adding another name to the list of party figures calling him best able to beat Democratic President Obama. However, it leaves Romney’s more conservative rivals still fighting with one another to emerge as his strongest challenger. And it prompted at least one backer of Texas Gov. Rick Perry to urge him to quit the race. Besides offering Romney his support, Huntsman also appealed for civility in a race that has become defined by attack advertisements paid for by anonymous groups. “At its core, the Republican Party is a party of ideas, but the current toxic form of our political discourse does not help our cause,” he said, as televisions and telephones across the state hummed with attack messages. Huntsman’s endorsement offers little in the way of a campaign organization or bankable support to Romney. But it does add to the sense of inevitability the former Massachusetts governor has worked to portray in a state that has voted for the eventual GOP

Jon Huntsman leaves the stage Monday with his wife, Mary Kaye Huntsman, and daughters Mary Anne, left, and Abby, right, after dropping out of the GOP race in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

9Wbbi \eh F[hho je Gk_j Polls in South Carolina showed Rick Perry trailing in single digits, prompting some backers to call on him to leave the race. “There are a lot of conservatives who were happy to see him get in and now who would be happy to see him get out,” said state Rep. Larry Grooms. Katon Dawson, Perry’s South Carolina chairman, resisted the idea: “I find it sort of offensive that some Republicans would tell us they want to hand-pick the candidate before the election.” (AP)

candidat since 1980 and where he is campaigning with backing from the state’s new governor, Nikki Haley, and Arizona Sen. John McCain, winner of the 2008 primary here. Romney stands a good chance of winning the votes Huntsman would have received. Both tout business backgrounds and are social moderates in a state where social conservatives are an influential bloc. Polls show Romney was most often the second choice of Huntsman backers. “Certainly, it will help Gov. Romney here; it’s just not clear how much,” said former state attorney general Henry McMaster. An early Huntsman supporter, McMaster had not committed to another candidate after Huntsman’s announcement. KASIE HUNT AND THOMAS BEAUMONT (AP)

=ee#=ee" =W^#=W^ Unraveling how babies learn to speak isn’t merely a curiosity. Neuroscientists want to know how to encourage that process, especially if it doesn’t seem to be happening on time. Studies have shown that babies who are best at distinguishing between vowel sounds like “ah” and “ee” shortly before their first birthday wind up with better vocabularies and pre-reading skills by kindergarten. The company that began advertising for an incredibly lifelike Steve Jobs doll won’t sell the figurines after all because of pressure from family and Apple lawyers. In Icons had planned to offer the 1-foot-tall, lifelike figure dressed in the late Apple CEO’s trademark black mock turtleneck, rimless glasses and jeans. The company says any money received for preorders will be returned. (AP)

The new research appears in this week’s issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. It offers more evidence that quality face-time with your tot is very important for speech development. It also begs the question of whether babies who turn out to have developmental disorders learn to speak the same way or whether they show differences that just might provide an early warning sign. Lewkowicz theorizes that there may be different patterns in children at risk of autism, something autism experts caution would be hard to prove. L AUR AN NEERGA ARD (AP)

Apparently, it doesn’t take them too long to absorb the movements that match basic sounds. By their first birthdays, babies start shifting back to look you in the eye again — unless they hear the unfamiliar sounds of a foreign language. Then, they stick with lip-reading a bit longer. “It’s a pretty intriguing finding,” says University of Iowa psychology professor Bob McMurray, who also studies speech development. The babies “know what they need to know about, and they’re able to deploy their attention to what’s important at that point in development.”

Babies don’t learn to talk just from hearing sounds. New research suggests they’re lip-readers, too. It happens during that magical stage when a baby’s babbling gradually changes from gibberish into syllables and eventually into that first “mama” or “dada.” Florida scientists discovered that starting around age 6 months, babies begin shifting from the intent eye gaze of early infancy to studying mouths when people talk to them. “The baby in order to imitate you has to figure out how to shape their lips to make that particular sound they’re hearing,” explains developmental psychologist David Lewkowicz of Florida Atlantic University, who led the study being published Monday. “It’s an incredibly complex process.”

High-Speed Rail Plans Sputtering FWbe 7bje" 9Wb_\$ Critics began panning the first leg of California’s futuristic high-speed rail network as a “train to nowhere” soon after officials decided to build it not in the major population centers of Los Angeles or San Francisco, but through the state’s Central Valley farming belt. Obama set a goal of providing 80 percent of Americans access to high-speed rail within 25 years. But rather than beginning in one of the state’s congested major cities, planners decided to build the first phase of the project along a 130-mile stretch of the Central Valley — a rail line that runs from

Be\jo Fhec_i[i A national high-speed rail network would not only support tens of thousands of construction and manufacturing jobs, but it would also get Americans out of their cars; revitalize struggling downtowns; and spare the environment millions of tons of carbon emissions and travelers untold hours wasted in traffic or in airport terminals waiting out delays. (T WP)

just south of Merced to just north of Bakersfield. The estimated cost of the rail network has tripled from earlier estimates, to nearly $100 billion.

Information Session for both daytime and evening Pastry Session will be held Wednesday, January 18th at 6:30 pm. Information Session for the Culinary Arts program will be held Saturday, January 21st at 11:00 am in the Gaithersburg school.

And the completion date for the 800-mile system has been pushed back from 2020 to 2033. Meanwhile, a recent poll indicated that public sentiment in California has turned against the project. “I feel like right now we are faced with two bad choices,” said state Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Calif., who chairs a key subcommittee overseeing high-speed rail spending. “One bad choice is to kill the whole project. But the other is to say, ‘Let’s spend $6.2 billion because we are being rushed into it because we could lose federal funding.’ ... We don’t want to end up making a $100 billion mistake.” MICHAEL A. Government Partially Restores Gas Subsidies Labor unions ended a crippling nationwide strike Monday in Nigeria after President Goodluck Jonathan partially restored the subsidies that keep gasoline prices low, though it took soldiers deployed to stop protests. The creditworthiness of Europe’s rescue fund, after Standard & Poor’s downgraded the fund Monday, putting its ability to raise cheap bailout money at risk. C[Wdm^_b[ $$$ A fire lit by protesters rages Monday in Bucharest, Romania, as more than 1,000 demonstrators jeer government austerity measures for a fifth-straight day and police clash with demonstrators hurling stones and firebombs. Romania’s prime minister, Emil Boc, warned that violent clashes like those that left 59 injured over the weekend could jeopardize stability and economic growth, calling the violence “unacceptable.” There also were smaller protests in another dozen Romanian cities, but it was not clear how many people had gathered across the country. Emergency workers on Monday remove a body from a fallen building in Beirut.

One defining image of Europe’s two-year-old debt crisis is that of the French and German leaders, side by side presenting their latest strategy for the Continent. But the underlying message of t his image — former foes presenting a united front as the 17 countries that use the euro face their biggest crisis since World War II — may now be under threat. Standard & Poor’s downgrade on Friday of France’s creditworthiness to AA+ leaves Germany a s t he on l y l a r ge e u r o z one economy with an A A A rating, making it the country that will have to shoulder the currency union’s rescue efforts. France was the only top-rated country that, at least behind the scenes, had lobbied for more expansionary policies. Its fall f rom t he A A A club leaves it up to Luxembourg, Finland or the Netherlands to challenge Germany. However, S&P’s knockdown could just as easily force the region’s biggest economy into even closer

of German pockets. Eurobonds, where debt would be backed by all eurozone countries and is seen by many as the solution to the crisis, would mean higher funding costs for Berlin. But the alternative, a breakup of the euro, would be much more expensive, analysts warn. The German economy depends on exports, and the eurozone’s weaker members have helped ma ke German goods more competitive. GABRIELE STEINHAUSER (AP)

The latest clash could also complicate U.S. efforts to get Pakistan to cooperate on the war in Afghanistan. The ruling boosted the sense that the administration could fall, squeezed between the court and Pakistan’s generals. Gilani warned both the judges and the army that they must protect democracy. “It cannot happen that they derail system,” said Gilani after a majority in parliament passed a resolution supporting the government. Yemen is the poorest nation in the Arab world. There have long been fears that the chaos there, if unchecked, could lead to a breakup of the country along tribal or regional lines. Such a scenario could turn Yemen into something akin to Taliban-ruled Afghanistan, a sanctuary for militants from the world over where they could plot high-profile terror attacks against the United States and its allies. President Obama evoked Martin Luther King Jr.’s own words about public service Monday as Obama and his family celebrated the life of the late civil rights leader with a volunteer project. The president, along with wife Michelle Obama and daughter Malia, joined other volunteers at Browne Education Center in Washington. During brief remarks, the president said there was no better way to honor King than to do something on behalf of others. He also acknowledged the controversy surrounding a quote on the new MLK memorial in Washington, which is being changed amid criticism that it did not accurately reect King’s words. “What he really said was all of us can be a drum major for service, all of us can be a drum major for justice,â€? Obama said.

MLK Parade Returns to Holiday MWi^_d]jed Monday’s parade down Martin Luther King Avenue in Southeast Washington marked a homecoming of sorts, bringing back a tradition onlookers and participants said they’d missed for years. For the ďŹ rst time since 2004, the District’s parade honoring the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. had groups joyously marching through the city on the same day as the national holiday remembering the civil rights leader. Previous parades had been moved to the spring for better weather or had been canceled, organizers said. But this year, the celebration made a comeback, with about 300

Kennie said having the parade on the King holiday made it more special. “You can name a street after him, a monument, but having it on this day is long overdue,â€? The Metro board’s finance committee wants to consider more options than those proposed by General Manager Richard Sarles to close a $116 million shortfall in the transit authority’s next budget. Sarles had proposed significantly higher fares for people who use paper farecards; cutting day passes; and the elimination of a complicated surcharge for traveling during the system’s busiest times. Board members said Thursday they want to hear what the public has to say about those options. They also want input on a possible two-zone fare system and a 5-cent surcharge for travel through some popular stations. At its Jan. 26 meeting, the board will finalize what options it wants to put before the public at hearings in February and March. Any fare changes would likely go into effect in July. Sarles has proposed a $1.6 billion operating budget for fiscal 2013 that would raise rates on bus and rail by an average of about 5 percent. About $53 million of the $116 million needed to close the deficit would come from local jurisdictions, while the rest would come from fare increases. Sarles has also proposed a capital budget of about $900 million. Ten of the board members have joined the panel since January 2011, and many wanted to throw a variety of ideas on the table. One was to privatize Metro’s parking facilities and look more closely at employ-

Shipwrecked After a cruise ship capsizes near Italy, officials look to prevent an oil spill Hec[ Italy’s cruise liner tragedy turned into an environmental crisis Monday, as rough seas battering the stricken mega-ship raised fears that fuel might leak into pristine waters off Tuscany that are part of a protected sanctuary for dolphins, porpoises and whales. T he s h ip ’s j a i le d c a p t a i n , meanwhile, lost the support of his Italian employer as he battled prosecutors' claims that he caused the deadly wreck and abandoned a sinking ship before its 4,200 passengers and crew had been evacuated. Waters that had remained calm for the first three days of the rescue turned choppy Monday, shifting the wreckage of the Costa Concordia and suspending divers’ searches. Earlier, authorities said 16 people were unaccounted for, but an Italian Coast Guard official said late Monday

J^[ 9WfjW_d _d Gk[ij_ed The captain of the cruise liner that ran aground off the Tuscan coast is facing accusations from officials and passengers that he abandoned ship before everyone was safely evacuated and was showing off when he steered the vessel far too close to shore. Costa Crociere chairman and CEO Pier Luigi Foschi didn’t respond directly to accusations against Francesco Schettino, but he suggested Schettino’s conduct wasn’t as bad in the hours of the evacuation as has been portrayed. Some reports have suggested the captain was drinking at the bar shortly before the accident. Schettino has insisted in an interview before his jailing that he stayed with the vessel to the end. (AP)

that 25 passengers and four crew members were missing. At least six people were killed. Italy’s environmental minister raised the alarm about a potential catastrophe if any of the 2,300 tons of fuel begins to leak into the waters off Giglio, which form part of the protected Tuscan archipelago. “At the moment there haven’t been any fuel leaks, but we have to intervene quickly to avoid an environmental disaster,” Corrado Clini told RAI state radio. Even before the accident, there had been mounting calls from environmentalists to restrict passage

of large ships in the area. The ship’s operator, Costa Crociere SpA, has enlisted Smit of Rotterdam, Netherlands, one of the world’s biggest salvagers, to handle the removal of the 1,000-foot cruise liner. A study could come as early as Tuesday on how to extract the fuel safely. Smit has a long history of dealing with wrecks and leaks, including refloating grounded bulk carriers and securing drilling platforms in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Capt. Francesco Schettino made an unauthorized deviation that caused the ship to crash into a reef and capsize Friday, the operator said.

M^Wj >Wff[d[Z The Concordia — a ship more than two-and-ahalf football fields long — was carrying more than 4,200 passengers and crew Friday night when it hit a reef off the Italian coast, flooded with water and listed to one side. At least six people died in the accident with another 29 unaccounted for, including two American passengers. Survivors described a terrifying escape that was straight out of a scene from “Titanic.” Many complained the crew didn’t give them good directions on how to evacuate and, once the emergency became clear, delayed lowering the lifeboats until the ship was listing too heavily for all to be released. “We were left to ourselves,” pregnant French passenger Isabelle Mougin, who injured her ankle in the scramble, told the ANSA news agency. (AP)

IW\[jo

=hem_d] Jh[dZ5 The capsizing of the Costa Concordia has raised questions about the safety of the everincreasing size of cruise ships. Experts say these mega-ships have the latest technology and pose little risk to passengers, but attorney Jack Hickey said overall safety training is usually an afterthought. However, Michael Crye of the Cruise Lines International Association said newer, large ships have better technology to communicate with passengers in case of an emergency, have life jackets in more central locations and carry lifeboats that can be boarded more quickly. (AP)

The navigational “fly by” of Giglio was apparently made as a favor to the chief waiter, who is from the tiny island and whose parents live there, local media reported. A judge will decide Tuesday whether Schettino should remain jailed. “We are struck by the unscrupulousness of the reckless maneuver that the commander of the Costa Concordia made near the island of Giglio,” prosecutor Francesco Verusio said. “It was inexcusable.” (AP)

Simply take a look at the fingers of Tom Brady and Eli Manning to recognize it. Brady has three Super Bowl rings, with another taken away by Manning and the Giants in 2008. Both have their teams on course for a reprise of that memorable title game. Standing in their way are two inconsistent QBs seeking to fill out their own championship resumes: Joe Flacco of Baltimore and Alex Smith of San Francisco. Based on their histories and

the way they have performed this season, Brady and Manning overmatch Flacco and Smith. When things have gotten tight for New England or New York, the quarterback often has provided the winning edge. “The team revolves around him,” Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez said of Brady. “When he comes to play, which he mostly does every game, then we’re going to be on fire, and when he’s ready, we’re all ready.” Ditto for Manning. For now, Smith and Flacco can only wonder whether they have what it takes to grab the ring. Something of a surprise firstround draft choice in 2008 out of Delaware, Flacco helped the Ravens

Dilfer was — some of Brady has to rub off on Flacco. Smith finally has become comfortable in San Francisco, thanks to new coach Jim Harbaugh’s guidance and confidence in the seven-year veteran. The 49ers are efficient on offense with a strong running game behind Frank Gore, and a tight end, Vernon Davis, who displayed all his skills in a sensational playoff debut against New Orleans. To expect Smith to trade throws with Saints star Drew Brees was unthinkable, yet there he was, making clutch pass after clutch pass in the late stages of Saturday’s thrilling win. If he’s capable of a similar performance against the Giants, it would enhance San Francisco’s chances immeasurably. “He deserves all this,” Gore said of Smith’s revival. “He’s had some tough times. But I always believed he could play at this level. We have the right people leading us. And he’s got the right people leading him.” BARRY WILNER (AP)

Tim Tebow will enter training camp as the Denver Broncos’ starting quarterback for 2012. The team sought to curb the circus that’s sure to surround Tebow this off-season by declaring him the incumbent at a season-ending news conference Monday. John Elway, a Hall of Famer who rejoined the team a year ago as chief of football operations, has pledged to work with Tebow this off-season to polish his passing game. Tebow took over a 1-4 team in October and guided the Broncos to their first playoff berth since 2005. (AP)

Will These Caps Rise to the Top? Back in first place, team’s fortunes may hinge on 3 players

Capitals fans with their fingers on the panic button can relax. Sunday’s win over the Carolina Hurricanes put Washington back on top of the Southeast Division, with the team overtaking the Florida Panthers. To stay on top, certain players must prolong their recent surges into the second half of the season. Here are three players the Capitals (who face the New York Islanders on Tuesday) will rely on down the stretch.

HecWd >Wchb_a

7b[n El[Y^a_d

W hen t he Caps signed the 37-yearold defenseman this summer, General Manager George McPhee hoped his veteran presence would be a boon to the Caps’ blue line. So far, the Czech hasn’t lived up to his billing with a minus-three rating. But a recent turnaround has begun. Since a 5-1 loss to Philadelphia on Dec. 13, Hamrlik has yet to finish a game with a minus rating. With Mike Green set for abdominal surgery that will sideline him four to six weeks, the Caps need all the help they can get on defense.

Ovechkin is notorious for starting slow and then turning into a machinegun-like scorer in the second half of the season, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Ovi is once again leading the team in scoring. However, Ovechkin’s sevengame point streak and 18 total goals are just part of what he needs to bring in the second half. Now it’s all about whether Ovi can find the balance between offense and defense that old coach Bruce Boudreau could never instill in him.

In a recent NHL player’s poll, Semin and fellow Russian Alex Ovechkin were listed among the league’s most overrated players. It’s an unfortunate title to bear, but it’s hardly an exaggeration in this case. Lauded for his incredible skills but slammed for his lackadaisical attitude, Semin has just 10 goals and a grand total of 23 points in 38 games. He’s been more responsible of late, though, earning only two penalty minutes in his last nine games, and he has six goals and seven assists in the last dozen games.

Mehaekj0 Because 39-year-old Tara Cooksey has arthritis, she’s often wary about how exercise will affect her joints. “Lifting weights is too rough for me,” she says. But at her first Barre3 class last week, she managed to get her muscles working without her body complaining — although several times, Cooksey felt the shaking that barre workouts are known for, especially when she was seated, leaning back on a squishy ball and twisting to target her obliques. It’s a tough but doable routine, no matter your fitness level, Warren says. “My mom is in her late 70s, and she can be in the same class as a competitive triathlete,” she says. As students become more advanced, they can go deeper into the movements and up the weights to stay challenged.

At the new Barre3 studio in Georgetown, students learn to rely on the ballet barre as a prop that’ll keep them from falling over when doing yoga poses or other exercises.

=[j j^[ 8WbWdY[ H_]^j To build a better body from front to back, you can lean on Georgetown’s Barre3 There are three main things you need to know about Barre3. It’s a ballet-inspired fitness program. Madonna does it. And, now that the first Washington location has opened, so can you.

M^Wj ?j ?i0 Developed by Sadie Lincoln, who runs the Barre3 empire from her flagship studios in Portland, Ore., the program fuses Pilates, yoga and ballet barre exercises. That description probably sounds familiar if you’ve taken any of the other barre fitness classes in town, but Lincoln’s

method has a few distinguishing features. Most notably, students are never directed to tuck their pelvises during movements. “You don’t live here,” says Jill Warren, who owns the new Georgetown location, while demonstrating how unnatural it is to hold a tucked position. “Everything in Barre3 is about finding balance in the front body and back body.” To see another Barre3 signature, just look down. Georgetown’s two studio spaces — one that maxes out

at 21 students and a cozier room that’s designed for groups of 10 or fewer — both have cork flooring. The material’s more cushiony than hard wood and not as slippery.

Cel[i0 Although the Barre3 repertoire is varied enough to ensure that every class is different, regulars will get accustomed to the sequence. “It’s always work, stretch, work, stretch,” says studio manager/ instructor Leeanne Cress. And plenty of that stretching

will look familiar to yogis. “We call it sneaky yoga,” Warren says. “We think of the ballet barre as a prop, like a yoga block.” So grabbing the barre with both hands, keeping your torso horizontal to the ground and lifting a leg is “Warrior 3,” but it’s much easier to hold the position than it would be on a mat. You can also do tons more chaturanga push-ups when leaning on the barre. As with most barre fitness classes, you can expect to sculpt your legs and “seat” (barre-speak for butt) with tons of pulsing plies. You’ll also lift light dumbbells (1 to 3 pounds) for high reps to target your arms. The most intense section is the core work, which lasts 15 to 18 minutes and borrows heavily from Pilates.

9hemZ0 Women tend to want to live out their ballet dreams more than men do. (Not that you need to have any tutu experience to follow along.) During the day, many of the ladies packing the studio are moms. So to cater to busy parents, Barre3 also offers child care ($5 per session) in a nook off of the lounge. That’s an amenity that’s tough to find even at large gyms in Washington. “We wanted to make it accessible and welcoming,” Warren says. In the coming months, she hopes to build the community by reaching out to running and cycling groups using the Capital Crescent Trail, which ends practically outside her front door at the Georgetown Waterfront Park. Maybe they could use some sneaky yoga — or at least a shower. So she still gets to be Grandma, but cigarettes are for outside; “shoot” and “fudge” need to become part of her vocabulary; and any racist remarks will end the visit for the day.

This is one of the most honest letters I’ve gotten in a long time. You’ve already done so much of the work by allowing yourself to recognize the dynamic that’s at play. If you’re ready to do more, write her a letter. You need not bare all, but give her a hint of your vulnerability and your hope for the future. (“I know I don’t always give back what you put in; I struggle with your success sometimes, but it’s something I want to work on, and it doesn’t make me love you any less.”) Then take the small steps: a 15-minute phone call; a funny email that doesn’t involve a forward; an earnest “How are you?” that waits for a real answer. And realize two things: that her life is probably not as easy as it seems, and that a therapist could really help if the anger refuses to budge.

Magic Number No one seems to know what’s behind the major proliferation of CrossFit gyms along 14th Street. But once CrossFit Metro Center (Crossfitmetrocenter.com) opens for business, there will be five facilities dedicated to forging elite fitness either on or within one block of a four-mile stretch of the street. Joe Freeman, of CrossFit Praxis, says there’s been talk of planning a “box crawl” along this CrossFit corridor. It’ll be like a bar crawl, except participants will exercise at each stop. V.H.

D.C.’s two newest CrossFit facilities show off what they’ve done with the place There’s a reason CrossFit gyms are called “boxes.” That’s what they normally look like — sparsely decorated warehouses stocked with an assortment of weight plates, ropes and kettlebells. But Washington’s two newest CrossFit facilities are trying to think outside the box when it comes to developing an identity.

9heii<_j FhWn_i Talk about the next big thing. This place has two separate CrossFit spaces, each with 22-foot ceilings, which leaves plenty of room for ropes and rings to hang. The larger studio boasts a 50-foot-long pull-up bar that accommodated 19 athletes simultaneously during the gym’s November opening. “And you can really do sprints in here,” says head coach Joe Freeman. That’s just the ground floor. The plan is to turn the entire 26,000-square-foot building — which was used over the summer

Stretching and strengthening, he says, could be just the thing to get into the mood for love. “Yoga allows you to connect with yourself. That’s the first step in any relationship,” he says. And even if participants don’t feel sparks with anyone in the room, they’ll at least have an invigorating start to the weekend. “Our hope is that people always love their experiences at the studio,” DiNardo says. High-quality oils — olive, safflower — contain essential fatty acids that help your skin hold moisture in. Switch from butter to a tablespoon of olive oil when cooking, or try using it as a salad dressing.

BRAVO

October 2011 was the 20th anniversary of the Lotsa Pop Losers festival. Hosted by D.C. labels Slumberland, Simple Machines and Teen-Beat, the event solidified the emerging indie/punk scene of the era. That anniversary came and went with little notice, but Chickfactor — the ’zine that was born soon after Pop Losers — isn’t going to let its two-decade anniversary pass without a party — 8o 9^h_ijef^[h several, in fact: two Fehj[h nights in Arlington at Artisphere April 6-7, followed by three in New York City. Chickfactor was started by Gail O’Hara and Pam Berry: The former is a journalist and photographer, and the latter is one of indie’s most beloved singers. (Berry is pictured, far left, with influential D.C. noise-pop band Black Tambourine, for which she did vocals.) The two covered the indie scene with style, and the ’zine’s spirit has endured, though it has been inactive for some time. (Chickfactor.com is still updated.) Several groups from that ’90s scene are re-forming for the shows, including much-loved Rhode Island bands Honey Bunch and Small Factory. But the big news is that Black Tambourine will be playing its first shows in 21 years. Pop losers, no more.

G 7 For its fourth season on Bravo, “Tabatha’s Salon Takeover” has a new name: “Tabatha Takes Over.” Australian hair stylist Tabatha Coffey, 44, is not only improving failed salons; she’s tackling other sorts of businesses: On Tuesday at 10 p.m., she’ll visit a gay bar. Also coming up: a yogurt shop whose yogurt-making machine was so loud that, Coffey reports, “it deafened me.” You’ve said you don’t like being called a bitch. But on this season’s first episode (which aired Jan. 10), you referred to yourself as a bitch.

It’s so interesting to me that everyone wants to call me a bitch. In the beginning, I found it such a neg-

If it was a guy telling the truth and being forthright, he wouldn’t be called a bitch; he’d be called a go-getter and ambitious and honest. So I came up with an acronym: Brave, Intelligent, Tenacious, Creative and Honest. If we use that acronym, I think we should all be a little bit of a bitch.

thing, but it isn’t. It’s everywhere now. I know it sounds really trite, but [work ethic] starts at a young age. My mother made sure I was up and dressed and ready for school and uniform pressed because you just didn’t go late. I do. Except when I go to bed, I wear pink pajamas with little animals and things on them. It’s very unTabathaesque. You’re expanding to other businesses this season. Would you ever come to D.C. and take over Congress?

Ohhh, wouldn’t that be fun? What would you change?

In this day and age, my fellow gays and I should have the right to get married. Tell us about Tuesday’s episode, when you “take over” a gay bar.

Ripples was the first gay dance club in Long Beach, Calif., and its owners were coming up on their 40th anniversary. They were still running their bar with an old-school mentality, driving customers away. They charged a cover just to go in and have a drink, which is crazy. It’s a bar; it’s not a nightclub. They refused to give you tap water and charged $3.50 for water.

You often work with people who have a lazy work ethic. Is that a peculiarly American thing?

Many of the staffers you work with seem to find you intimidating.

Was this a successful takeover?

I t hink you w ill be happy when you watch the episode.

From left: Marion Cotillard, Alison Pill and Owen Wilson appear on the set of “Midnight in Paris” with Woody Allen. The 41st film directed by Allen, “Paris” was a surprise box office hit and could garner several Academy Award nominations for the filmmaker.

Ed Wd ;l[d A[[b Woody Allen doesn’t feel the effects of his latest career revival F[hiedWb_j_[i The chimes may have tolled midnight in Paris, but in Hollywood, it’s the dawn of another career revival for Woody Allen after his biggest hit in decades and a new round of awards. How much will the success of “Midnight in Paris” change the filmmaker’s career? Not one bit, Allen says. In nearly 45 years of alternating between toast of the town and yesterday’s news, Allen has barely deviated from a simple formula: Make a movie a year on an economical budget and avoid the show business baubles — counting box-office grosses, obsessing over reviews, glad-

handing for awards — that would distract from his routine. “I’ve managed to avoid over decades the hit-flop syndrome,” Allen says. “I’ve just sort of existed since 1968 making films kind of on a low flame, burning on a low flame. And that’s fine, because the fun for me is to make the picture.” By the time the romantic fantasy “Midnight in Paris” began packing theaters last summer, Allen was on to the next film, preparing to shoot the comedy “Nero Fiddled” in Rome. But his love letter to Paris was charming critics and fans like no Allen film had done in ages. A clever romp examining people’s perpetual discontent with modern times, the film stars Owen Wilson as an American writer whose yearning for the 1920s Paris of Hemingway and Fitzgerald gives him a chance to spend some quality time with his idols.

Already the record-holder with 14 writing nominations at the Academy Awards, Allen seems likely to pad that total this year. “Woody Allen still has a lot to say,” says Michael Barker, co-president of Sony Pictures Classics, which released “Paris.” “He’s as prolific as ever.” DAVID GERMAIN (AP)

It was created by J.D. Walsh, an actor who worked for John Kerry during a political campaign. “Battleground” premieres Feb. 14. (AP)

“It is a free country and he can criticize anyone he cares to, but as for someone who is working to gain the support of Republican voters, it’s not the best policy to criticize the people you are working to create inroads [with].”

“Remember that? Back in 2008, Mike Singletary famously said he couldn’t play, win or coach with Vernon Davis. Can’t do it. 3+ years later, things have changed dramatically in San Francisco. In fact, the 49ers couldn’t have won WITHOUT him yesterday.” — FANIQ.COM feels good for Davis, the D.C. native who caught a game-winning touchdown for the 49ers Sunday. Singletary, a former 49ers coach, once said about Davis that he “cannot play with him, cannot win with him, cannot coach with him.”

Why You Shouldn’t Block Gossip Sites In the Workplace According to Radaronline.com, JP Morgan Chase has been trying to serve foreclosure papers to O.J. On Sunday’s episode of “Kourtney and Kim Take New York,” Kim Kardashian revealed doubts about her marriage to Kris Humphries, during a conversation with sister Khloe Kardshian. “I’m just so unhappy in life, and I don’t like who I am in this marriage,” Kim Kardashian said. “I don’t like who I am to him, to myself. My gut and my heart is telling me I did this too fast and I’m embarrassed. I got caught up in the fairy tale of it, and I’m not happy.” She continued, “I’m embarrassed that I let my own issues and relationship get in the way.” (E XPRESS)
