Coyotes have to live in bathrooms because we took all their space
Health care is so pricey and tough to get that this is kinda relatable
If there’s any comfort here, it’s that ‘Florida weird’ is eternal
A coyote sprinted into a Nashville convention center where a boat show was packing up Sunday night. The Music City Center said the coyote ran into an exhibit hall and was trapped in a bathroom. It was released in the woods. Metro Animal Care and Control Director Lauren Bluestone said coyote encounters are more common as Nashville expands. “Because of intrusion into their habitat, it’s going to be close living,” Bluestone said. An Idaho woman who thought she was gaining weight from menopause actually had a 50-pound tumor that had been growing for a decade. Boise TV station KTVB reported that when Brenda Cridland of Meridian finally went to a doctor, a CAT scan revealed a huge tumor that had displaced her organs and was cutting off the blood supply to her brain. Cridland underwent 2½ hours of surgery to remove the mass, which was benign. (AP)
A Florida man was jailed last week after threatening to kill his neighbors with kindness, HuffPost reported Monday. Trouble is, “Kindness” is what Bryan Stewart of Milton calls his machete. Neighbors came to Stewart’s door after hearing loud noises, and when Stewart came out, he was holding the machete, with the word “kindness” written on it. One of the neighbors suffered a small cut in trying to block the machete. (EXPRESS)

I think we might be the only people actually from America at the game, but we’ll see. . . . My friends all think I’m absolutely crazy.”
Fake editions of The Washington Post claiming that President Trump was leaving office were handed out Wednesday morning around Washington. The print newspapers — dated May 1, 2019, and looking strikingly similar to actual copies of The Post — were filled with anti-Trump stories, which also appeared on a website that mimicked the official Post site. The Yes Men, a group that describes itself as a “trickster activist collective,” said it produced the bogus newspapers and website.

SPORTS As a long-suffering D.C. sports fan, Margie Yeager may have still been riding high off the thrill of attending the Capitals’ Stanley Cup victory parade when the NBA announced last June that the Wizards would play the Knicks in London today. How else to explain why Yeager’s immediate reaction was to book travel plans? Yeager and her husband, Michael Sriqui, along with their three young sons and their au pair, left for London on Wednesday. The sports-obsessed family will spend a week abroad. “It seemed crazy but fun,” Yeager said. “Our summer vacation was to go to the Stanley Cup [finals and parade] in D.C., so we’re making our winter vacation the Wizards in London. Why not?” Yeager said she considers the Wizards her third-favorite team

Commute a bit easier? Thank the shutdown. MATT McCLAIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)
ANNAPOLIS Gov. Larry Hogan spent much of his second inaugural speech contrasting bipartisanship in his first term with the partisan rancor in the nearby nation’s capital, as he embraced a rare moment in Maryland politics by becoming only the second Republican governor to be sworn in to a second term Wednesday and a partial federal government shutdown dragged into its 26th day. It was an inaugural ceremony full of criticism of gridlock in D.C. as the shutdown affects tens of thousands of federal workers who live in Maryland. “Look, I’m willing to stand up and fight for the things that really matter but not for the status quo politics and not to perpetuate polarization and paralysis,” Hogan said. “I come from the get-to-work and get-things-done school of politics, and I’ll work with anyone who wants to do the people’s business.” Hogan was introduced by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, a 2016 GOP presidential candidate who praised Hogan and bipartisan efforts in Annapolis as being “the antitheses of what’s happening in Washington, D.C., these days.” Speaking to reporters before the ceremony, Hogan noted the deadlocked negotiations over President Trump’s border wall funding demands and the effect

the shutdown was having on many residents. “We’re going to keep working for them, but we’re going to keep pushing the president and the Congress to get their act together and get things done, which is the way we’ve done it here in Maryland,” Hogan said. “But down there, it seems like nobody can ever get along, and nobody will ever even give up a little to get a lot done, and it’s crazy.” Hogan, 62, largely avoided outlining policy goals in his speech. He has said he plans his second term to be much as his first. He reserved much of this speech for criticizing Washington. “We all suffer enough challenges in our lives that give us plenty to worry about,” Hogan
said. “You shouldn’t have to obsess over or argue constantly about angry and divisive politics. You should be able to have confidence in the character and competence of the people you elect to office regardless of their party affiliation.” Hogan held an inaugural gala at the MGM National Harbor casino Wednesday night. He said he was ready to enjoy the moment, before getting back to work today with a news conference on his budget proposal. “It’s only the second time a Republican has been sworn in for a second term in 243 years, so we’re going to party a little bit, but then we’re going to get back to work,” Hogan said. With a partial shutdown nearing the end of its fourth week, an analysis done by a local transportation group has found there is somewhat of an upside for drivers on D.C.’s often super-congested highways and roads — fewer traffic jams. According to an analysis done by the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board, there has been a “considerable reduction in congestion on the region’s major roadways during the morning commute” with the federal government closed. Travel time along Interstate 270 from Interstate 70 to Interstate 370 — a distance of about 24 miles — went from 49 minutes last January down to 29 minutes this month. But while drivers in the morning are able to get to destinations faster, evening commutes haven’t been much shorter, the study found. (TWP)

Syria blast kills 4 Americans MANBIJ, SYRIA Two U.S. service members and two American civilians were among those killed in an explosion while conducting a patrol in Syria on Wednesday, the U.S. military said, an attack that came less than a month after President Trump announced his intention to withdraw troops from the war-torn country. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the morning attack, which local groups said killed 16 people in the U.S.-patrolled town of Manbij. At least five of the dead were U.S.-backed Syrian fighters. The claim calls into question Trump’s claim that ISIS has been defeated in Syria — his stated reason for pulling 2,000 American troops out of the country. “We have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency,” Trump tweeted in December in announcing his intention to bring back U.S. troops “NOW.” Vice President Pence repeated the claim Wednesday, saying the Islamic State “caliphate has crumbled” and the militant network “has been defeated.” His comments in a speech at the State Department came shortly after the U.S. military announced that American soldiers were among those killed in Manbij.

ISIS claims deadly attack just weeks after Trump declared it defeated
The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for an explosion Wednesday in Manbij, Syria, that killed up to 16 people, including four Americans.
U.S. Central Command said one of the civilians was employed by the Defense Department and the other was a contractor. The names of the American victims were being withheld until their families could be notified. Videos showed a restaurant that suffered extensive damage and a street covered with debris and blood. Several cars were also damaged. A security camera
showed a busy street, and then a ball of fire engulfing people and others running for cover. Trump’s shifting timetable for pulling U.S. troops out of Syria has left allies and other players in the region confused and jockeying for influence over a withdrawal strategy that appears to be a work in progress. Critics have said a pullout was premature, that ISIS was still not
defeated and a withdrawal could lead to a power vacuum that would fuel even more violence. It also led to the resignation of Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis. Since then, U.S. officials and Trump himself have suggested the withdrawal would be slower than initially believed. White House national security adviser John Bolton said two conditions would have to be met, including the protection of America’s local Kurdish allies in northern Syria, and the total defeat of ISIS. Last week, the U.S. military began pulling out equipment from northeast Syria into neighboring Iraq. No troops are known to have withdrawn yet. Manbij is the main town on the westernmost edge of Syrian territory held by the U.S.backed Syrian Kurds, running along the border with Turkey. Mixed Kurdish-Arab Syrian forces liberated Manbij from ISIS in 2016 with help from the U.S. But Kurdish control of the town infuriated Turkey, which views the main U.S. Kurdish ally as “terrorists.” The town has been at the center of tensions in northern Syria, with the militaries of two NATO members, the U.S. and Turkey, on opposing sides. The two sides began joint patrols there in November as part of a deal to ease tensions between the two allies. Turkey has also threatened to attack Kurdish-run towns further east. The presence of the Americans is a main obstacle preventing them from doing so. BASSEM MROUE (AP)

The proportion of Facebook users who don’t realize the site keeps a list of their interests and shares it with advertisers, according to a Pew Research Center survey released Wednesday. Users can view, under “account settings,” the running list of things Facebook has learned about them for advertisers. Police arrest 2 in Kenya attack as toll climbs NAIROBI, KENYA The death toll from an extremist attack on a luxury hotel and shopping complex in Nairobi, Kenya, climbed to 21, plus the five militants killed, police said Wednesday in the aftermath of a siege by al-Shabab gunmen. Two people accused of facilitating the attack were arrested. The number of dead rose with the discovery of six more bodies at the scene and the death of a wounded police officer, said Joseph Boinnet, inspectorgeneral of Kenyan police. Twenty-eight people were hurt and taken to the hospital, he said. An all-night operation by security forces to retake the complex was over and all of the extremists were killed, President Uhuru Kenyatta said In a televised address Wednesday. “We will seek out every person that was involved in the funding, planning and execution of this heinous act,” he said. The bloodshed appeared designed to inflict maximum damage to Kenya’s image of stability and its tourism industry, an important source of revenue. Gunfire continued hours after the government said buildings were secure. Dozens of trapped people were rescued overnight, and several loud booms were heard Wednesday as teams sought to clear the DusitD2 complex of booby traps and other explosives. The Kenyan Red Cross said about 50 people were unaccounted for. CHRISTOPHER TORCHIA (AP)

Lobbying T-Mobile execs stayed at Trump Hotel
verbatim
ALEX WONG (GETTY IMAGES)
POLITICS Last April, telecom giant T-Mobile announced a megadeal: a $26 billion merger with Sprint, which would more than double T-Mobile’s value and give it a huge new chunk of the cellphone market. But for T-Mobile, one hurdle remained: Its deal needed approval from the Trump administration. The next day, in Washington, staffers at the Trump International Hotel were handed a list of incoming “VIP Arrivals” that included nine of T-Mobile’s top executives, including chief executive John Legere. They were scheduled to stay one to three days. But it wasn’t their last visit. Instead, T-Mobile executives have returned to President Trump’s hotel repeatedly since then, according to eyewitnesses and hotel documents obtained by The Washington Post. By mid-June, hotel records indicated that one T-Mobile executive was making his 10th visit to the hotel. The visits highlight a stark reality in Washington, unprecedented in modern American history. Such visits raise questions about whether patronizing Trump’s private business is viewed as a way to influence public policy, critics said. The visits by T-Mobile executives cumulatively are probably worth tens of thousands of dollars to the Trump Organization, the president’s company, which he still owns despite criticism from government ethics experts. Last week, a Post reporter spotted Legere in the Trump hotel’s lobby. In an impromptu interview,
Legere said he chose the Trump hotel for its fine service and good security and praised the hotel’s location, next to one of the departments that must approve the company’s merger. Did he expect that his staying there might earn his company any special treatment? “Certainly not. I don’t know why it would,” he said. By the next evening, Legere was tweeting about the great bar at “my current DC hotel” — the Four Seasons in Georgetown. JONATHAN O’CONNELL AND DAVID A. FAHRENTHOLD (THE WASHINGTON POST)

POLITICS When her paychecks dried up because of the partial government shutdown, Cheryl Inzunza Blum sought out a side job that has become a popular option in the current economy: She rented out a room on Airbnb. Other government workers are driving for Uber, relying on word-of-mouth and social networks to find handyman work and looking for traditional temp gigs to help pay the bills. The “gig economy” has given hundreds of thousands of outof-work government employees more options than in past shutdowns. Blum capitalized on the busy winter travel season in Arizona to help make ends meet after she stopped getting paid for her government contract work as a lawyer in immigration court in Tucson. She says she has no choice but to work unpaid because clients, some of whom are detained or have court hearings, are depending on her. But she also has bills: her Arizona state bar dues, malpractice insurance and a more than $500 phone bill for the past two months because she uses her phone so heavily for work. Blum bills the government for her work, but the office that pays her hasn’t processed any paychecks to her since before the shutdown began. The shutdown is occurring against the backdrop of a strong economy that has millions of open jobs, along with ample opportunities to pick up ridesharing work. Roughly 8,700 Uber driver positions are advertised nationwide on the SnagAJob website, while Lyft advertises about 3,000. But the gig economy doesn’t pay all that well. Pay for such workers has declined over the past two years, and they are earning a growing share of their income elsewhere, a recent study found. Most Americans who earn income through online platforms do so for only a few months each year, according to the study by the JPMorgan Chase Institute. He made $30 on Monday helping a friend move out of a thirdfloor apartment in Cheyenne, Wyo. Jankowski is furloughed from a Department of Agriculture call center and does not expect to get back pay because his job is part-time and hourly. Pelosi urges Trump to move SOTU address POLITICS House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., on Wednesday asked President Trump to postpone his State of the Union address — or deliver it in writing — citing security concerns related to the partial government shutdown. The extraordinary suggestion, which could deny Trump an opportunity to make his case for border wall funding in a primetime televised address, came as White House officials were urging Republican senators to hold off on signing a bipartisan letter that would call for an end to the government shutdown. In a letter to Trump, Pelosi said the U.S. Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security, both of which have key responsibilities for planning and implementing security at the scheduled Jan. 29 address in the House chamber, have been “hamstrung” by furloughs. The White House had no immediate response, but Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen dismissed any security concerns Wednesday afternoon. Pelosi later told reporters that her letter was intended as a suggestion and that she was not rescinding an invitation for Trump to speak. She stressed that no address had ever been delivered during a government shutdown, adding that Trump is welcome to deliver an address from the Oval Office. Government intact, Britain needs new EU exit strategy Monday LONDON Prime Minister Theresa May survived a no-confidence motion Wednesday in the House of Commons, in a 325-302 vote, a day after the humiliating defeat of her Brexit plan imperiled both her leadership and Britain’s departure from the European Union.
May will keep her job — and must return to Parliament on Monday to show lawmakers her government’s “Plan B” for exiting the 28-member union. May said she would meet with the leaders of her Conservative Party and others to try to hammer out a deal that could pass a bitterly divided Parliament. It was unclear whether that would mean meeting with opposition Labour Party leaders who introduced the measure to sack her.

“The thing about Theresa May is that nothing seems to faze her,” said political analyst Anand Menon of the research group U.K. in a Changing Europe. “She just keeps on going.” Brexit is tearing British society and its political classes apart, neither side with enough power to best the other. “I think it’s astonishing she is carrying on as prime minister,” said Jonathan Tonge, a politics professor at the University of Liverpool. “Not just because of the size of the defeat, but also because she told us that this was the ‘best and only deal.’ So, by definition, any course she pursues now is an inferior course.” (THE WASHINGTON POST/AP)

ANALYSIS Bradley Beal, for most of his NBA career, has had to play in the shadow of Wizards teammate John Wall. But with Wall out for the season with a heel injury, Beal has brought respectability back to Washington. In the nine games since Wall last played Dec. 26, Beal is averaging 30.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 6.4 assists while playing 39.1 minutes per game. Over the past 10 games, Beal’s game score (21.7), a metric invented by John Hollinger to provide a rough measure of a player’s performance in a given game, is the sixth highest among starters playing at least 300 minutes. Two of the players ahead of him, Anthony Davis and James Harden, are front-runners for the league’s MVP award. Not convinced? assists and 11 rebounds — happened Dec. 22 against the Suns. Only Beal and Oscar Robertson have two 40-15-10 games in the same season. “Made big shot after big shot after big shot, and we needed every bit,” coach Scott Brooks said of Beal after the 140-138 overtime loss to the league-leading Raptors. “He puts us in the position to win, and that’s what your all-stars are supposed to do.” Behind Beal’s inspired play, the Wizards are 5-4 with a plus-3.2 net rating over the past nine games, a complete turnaround from their minus-4.7 net rating before Wall opted for season-ending surgery. To put that in perspective, it’s roughly the difference between the performance of this year’s 76ers (29-16, plus-2.7 net rating) and Magic (19-24, minus-3.9). Beal obviously gets more opportunities without Wall (his usage rate has climbed from 26 percent to 30 percent), but his shot selection is also different. For example, his rate of opportunities at the rim increases (6.5 to 8.9 attempts per

100 possessions) as do his field goal attempts from beyond the arc (8.7 to 10.1 per 100 possessions), both at the expense of midrange attempts, giving him and the team
a higher quality of shot. Efficient scoring and an ability to make plays have slowly turned Beal into a more valuable player for the Wizards than Wall. Dating back to last year, Beal’s first as an All-Star, Washington has outscored opponents by a fraction of a point (plus-0.2) with Wall and Beal sharing the court together. Over that span, with Beal at center stage and Wall on the sideline, the team’s net rating has improved to plus-1.4. With Wall on the court and Beal on the bench, it drops to minus-11.4. This is compelling evidence for fans and pundits calling for the Wizards to make big changes at the trade deadline or during the offseason. NEIL GREENBERG

Turkey eyes arrest of Knicks’ Kanter NBA Turkish government prosecutors are seeking an arrest warrant for New York Knicks center Enes Kanter, a Turkish national and political opponent of the country’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Officials in Istanbul were seeking a “red notice” through Interpol, asking the agency to detain Kanter, 26, and remand him to Turkish authorities, Turkish pro-government newspaper Sabah reported Wednesday. Kanter is aligned with Fethullah Gulen, a Muslim cleric and former Erdogan ally living in exile in Pennsylvania. Erdogan’s government accuses Gulen, widely seen as a moderate, of orchestrating a failed 2016 coup attempt and has jailed thousands of his followers. Turkey’s government considers the Gulenist movement a terrorist organization, and accused Kanter of funding the group.
The Redskins plan to stick with defensive coordinator Greg Manusky after a two-week period in which the team allegedly met with Gregg Williams, Todd Bowles and Steve Wilks. Coach Jay Gruden was seeking “different perspectives,” but wants continuity for his promising defense, a person with knowledge of Washington’s offseason plans said. (TWP)

Kanter, in a tweet Wednesday, said the Turkish government “can NOT present any single piece of evidence of my wrongdoing” and called himself “a law-abiding resident.” He has not returned to Turkey since 2016. Tahini is no longer limited to bowls of hummus or sauces atop falafel: Chefs and bartenders across D.C. are experimenting with the sesame-seed paste in desserts and cocktails. Tahini’s creamy texture and nutty taste complement flavors like honey, vanilla and chocolate, and it can be used to make halvah, a fudge-like confection. LANI FURBANK (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

Nari Kim, the co-bar manager at Maydan, says using tahini in desserts plays off a common theme. “I see a lot of similarities between nougat in a candy bar and halvah,” she says. “Anyone who’s had a Snickers bar will understand.” Halvah was the inspiration for one of her cocktails: Halawa ($14) is basically a creamy sesame margarita with aged tequila, tahini syrup, lime, orange liqueur and a dusting of crushed pistachios.
This modern Israeli restaurant in Cleveland Park uses about 120 pounds of tahini a week, according to chef Ryan Moore. Some of that goes into desserts, like the halvah chocolate pot de creme ($8). Moore works house-made halvah into a chocolate pot de creme base that’s boosted with tahini. The dish is topped with additional chunks of halvah, date molasses and Chantilly cream.
Tahini might be an odd ingredient to find in a Oaxacan kitchen, but, as chef Robert Aikens points out, sesame seeds are frequently used in Mexican cuisine. His new dessert special, a raw peanut, coconut and cacao cake ($9), is laced with tahini. The middle of the three-layer no-bake dessert is caramel made with maple syrup, vanilla, coconut oil and tahini, and it’s topped with peanut tahini ice cream.
Tahini imported from Israel is the key to Little Sesame’s fresh-spun hummus. The paste also provides creaminess to the shop’s dairy-free tahini soft-serve ($5), available in vanilla and dark chocolate Turkish coffee flavors, or as a swirl, right. “The silken tofu and the tahini create the richness and viscosity that you get in soft-serve,” co-owner and chef Nick Wiseman says. Top it with sesame crumble or halvah dust.

weekendpass Q&A | ESTHER POVITSKY
Havin’ fun, talkin’ about whatever
You were a dance major at the University of Illinois before dropping out as a junior to move to L.A. and pursue comedy. Looking back, what gave you the confidence to do that? I was really unhappy at my school. A lot of people were in sororities and a lot of people drank all the time, and I wasn’t into either of those things, so I really did not feel like I fit in. At that point, I had only tried standup a handful of times, but I knew it was what I wanted to do and I knew that I wanted to not be at my school. I look back over the last 10 years and I think moving to a city where you don’t know anyone, you don’t know anything, is the best thing you can do to help yourself grow and to really find who you are. The jokes in your stand-up and in “Alone Together” tend to be rather personal.
What is it about that type of humor that appeals to you? I really just talk honestly and openly about myself and how I feel and what it’s like being a 30-year-old woman in the world right now, living in Los Angeles. I’m not really political in my comedy, and I’m not looking to have the best joke about Trump or the best joke about whatever else is in the news. I’m really just trying to be open and honest about who I am. What itch does stand-up scratch that your other creative outlets don’t? With making “Alone Together” or filming “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” it’s a team effort and a group process, which is so wonderful. But it’s nice to also have stand-up, where you get to talk about whatever you want to talk about. And of course there’s the instant gratification of stand-up.
GETTY IMAGES/EXPRESS ILLUSTRATION
Esther Povitsky’s 2018 served up a sampler platter of the Hollywood experience. She got a taste of success when “Alone Together,” the platonic friendship sitcom she co-created and starred in, premiered in January on Freeform. She barely had time to savor the experience before rushing to work on a second 10-episode season, which arrived in August. Then, in November, came the bitter pill of cancellation. “In that calendar year alone we released 20 episodes of the show, and it got canceled,” says Povitsky, 30. “It all happened so quickly that I sort of feel like, ‘Wait, what? Where am I?’ So I’ve kind of spent the last few months just regrouping.” That process has included her recurring role on The CW’s musical comedy “Crazy ExGirlfriend” and a renewed focus on her stand-up, which she’ll perform Thursday at the DC Improv. Nicknamed “Little Esther,” the 5-foot-1 Illinois native revels in self-deprecation onstage, poking fun at both her humble Midwestern roots and adopted Southern California lifestyle. “In the Midwest I’m a 7,” she says in one go-to bit. “On the East Coast I’m a 6. And in L.A. I’m a cocker spaniel.” THOMAS FLOYD (EXPRESS)
Yesterday I wrote a joke, and I went and did a set that night and I tried the joke out. I found out instantly what worked and what didn’t, and that’s such a great feeling. With a decade under your belt, your stand-up style must’ve changed over the years. I used to do a lot more shorter jokes, like one-liners. Now I find myself really picking a topic and diving into it and having a lot more
to say. I have a new bit where I tell the crowd a story about something that happened to me recently, and I ask them: Was I wrong or was I right in what I did? I feel like people will leave and really have a strong sense of who I am — stronger than I could’ve said a few years ago. With “Alone Together” over and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” in its final season, what’s next for you? I definitely want to keep working
on my stand-up, and hopefully have a stand-up special sometime soon. If I could continue to work in comedy — whether it’s TV, stand-up — I will be happy. And of course being in a musical would be an amazing fantasy, but I don’t know how to make that happen. So I’ll just sit by my window and wait for something. The drag king community hasn’t reached the same level of pop culture success as its fellow queens, but Pretty Boi Drag — which celebrates its three-year anniversary with an event Sunday at Bier Baron — wants to be an advocate for change. “For a long time, drag king shows have been in the back of bars and dimly lit places where nobody really knows what’s going on,” Lexie Starre says. “We are working really hard to bring [drag kings] to the forefront and make them more mainstream.” Lexie Starre and Pretty Rik E had established themselves as prolific entertainers in D.C. before they started Pretty Boi Drag in 2016. performed with the now-defunct group DC Kings. The married couple say Pretty Boi Drag’s mission goes deeper than just introducing drag kings to a wider audience. They see the project — which showcases queer, androgynous and gender-neutral performers — as an avenue to address some of the long-standing issues affecting the community itself, particularly diversity. “We are a POC-centered group,” Lexie Starre says. “We work hard to center on performers of color, which is something that often doesn’t happen in the drag king world.” Pretty Boi Drag’s anniversary party, similar to its regular productions, will feature a diverse roster of drag kings delivering high-energy sets and performing to popular tunes sung by male singers. Each entertainer presents their own distinct stage
show, elevated with theatrical stage props, costumes and dancing. One of the featured acts, Sideshow Bro, incorporates traditional sideshow routines into drag performances. Another performer, Mich, gets his nickname “The Glitter King” for his unconventional use of the sparkly stuff (Pretty Rik E says it comes flying from out of nowhere at the most unexpected times). The drag kings don’t just stick to the stage at Pretty Boi Drag’s shows. They’re also in the crowd, playfully dancing on the laps of spectators or on tables as they serenade the audience. “We try to break that fourth wall with our audience and make them feel as much a part of the show as the performers,” Pretty Rik E says. The Pretty Boi Drag troupe includes around 40 kings, with Lexie Starre helming each

production and Pretty Rik E serving as the main emcee at every show. Pretty Boi Drag’s flagship productions include an Amateur King Night every six weeks, where anyone can participate, and a main show every three months that features an ensemble of regular performers. Pretty Rik E notes that since the group’s first event in 2016, many of Pretty Boi Drag’s
performances have sold out. Still, despite the troupe’s growing popularity in D.C., the local drag king scene remains more underground than the drag queen community. One reason for this, according to the couple, is the unshakable bias drag kings have faced. “There are people who will say, ‘Why would I pay to see someone dance in jeans and a T-shirt?’ And my response is that if all you have is a fancy outfit, [a drag performer] isn’t doing their best,” Pretty Rik E says. “[Pretty Boi Drag performers] might come out in jeans and a T-shirt, but that T-shirt might open to a sparkling shirt, or our pants might disappear at some point, or we’ll include dancers in our performances.” Lexie Starre adds that not having a visible champion for the community is another reason
drag kings have largely flown under the radar. When the popular TV show “RuPaul’s Drag Race” first beamed into living rooms across America in 2009, it flared an unprecedented spotlight on the drag queen world. The drag king community doesn’t have a comparable platform (yet), but Pretty Boi Drag might be onto something. “We’re not just going up onstage and lip-syncing — we’re giving audiences more than what they expected when they came through the door,” Pretty Rik E says. “That will eventually help us carve out our own mainstream space in this world, where people [now] associate drag with just drag queens.” STEPHANIE WILLIAMS (EXPRESS)

SADIE DINGFELDER | THE STAYCATIONER
With a l l the Smithsonians and the National Gallery of Art closed by the federa l shutdown, now’s a good time to visit D.C.’s lesser-known museums. That’s why, last week, I headed to the National Museum of Health and Medicine — a Department of Defense-funded institution that’s escaped the shutdown (so far) because it’s run by contractors. Though this museum once sat on the National Mall, it’s now located more than a mile from the nearest Metro station in an obscure corner of Silver Spring. That’s really for the best, because this museum is essentially a collection of spare body parts. Floating brains, a woman’s disintegrating face, children’s skeletons, conjoined fetuses in a jar — these are not things a casual tourist wants to encounter, especially right before lunch. As I took in these morbid artifacts, I found myself wishing for a docent — someone to explain what I should be gleaning from these bits and pieces, and maybe how they helped advance medical research and education. Alas, tours at this museum are self-guided, and most of the body parts on display have minimal labeling. This left me with lots of worrisome questions. For instance, as I gazed at a jar of preserved male genitals, complete
with wisps of pubic hair, I wondered how they ended up in the hands of the U.S. military, and what I — and other, more medically focused folks — could learn from looking at them. For the first hour of my visit, I considered these questions alone, but then a family of five arrived. The leader of the crew, a future physician assistant, told me she brought her parents, aunt and nephew there because the Mall’s museums were closed. “Look, Mom, is this real?” said the nephew, who had found the (real) skeleton of a 5-year-old child. “He’s got a big ol’ cabbage head just like you,” his mom replied. “What happened to him?” the boy asked, which was my question too. One display near the back of the museum provided a little context. This museum, said the wall text, was started at the beginning of the Civil War to help train field surgeons and advance military medicine. By the end of the conflict, the museum had some 4,000 skeletal specimens depicting all kinds of injuries, which the U.S. government then used to create an eight-volume publication that became an important reference for physicians worldwide. The collection, which has since grown to about 25 million artifacts, including bones, organs and medical devices, is still used for research today, the exhibit concluded. The many shattered bones and

bruised brains on display struck me, primarily, as evidence of the terrible cost of war, but several exhibits also emphasized the skill of military medical personnel. For instance, one gallery that featured a piece of floor from an Iraq war field hospital noted that 98 percent of the people who arrived at this tent hospital alive left alive, despite grievous injuries. At the center of the museum, I found its most famous artifacts: the bullet that killed Abraham Lincoln, fragments from the president’s skull and the bloodstained shirtsleeves of one of his physicians. Nearby text described the path of the bullet and the useless probing of his doctors — all interesting stuff, but I can’t say I learned much from this exhibit, especially when
Pro tip: This museum of random body parts is not for the squeamish. compared with similar ones at Ford’s Theatre and the National Museum of American History, which delve sensitively into the details of Lincoln’s assassination and its political aftermath. Right before leaving, I found the most random exhibit in a very random museum — a case containing, among other things, a gilded skull, the skeleton of a monkey that returned alive from an early U.S. space mission, a slide of a tumor extracted from Ulysses S. Grant, a couple of James Garfield’s vertebrae, and
a square of lace made by a mental patient at Saint Elizabeths, depicting her hallucinations. I can only imagine the conversation that led to this dadaist assemblage. Curator 1: “Where should we put the space monkey?” Curator 2: “There’s room next to the presidential tumor.” Curator 1: “Makes sense to me!” Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad that the National Museum of Health and Medicine exists. Even as the collection’s scientific uses are supplanted by medical imaging and other modern technology, it remains a fascinating, and perhaps important, glimpse into the gory legacy of war. “It’s my favorite song ever written,â€? Wood says of this 1950 blues ballad. He sings it at home often, but he’s rarely played it live. “It’s almost sacred ground. I don’t know if I could do it justice.â€?

Wood had recently read a list of the songs played at Woodstock, which spurred him to recall the title track of Hendrix’s 1967 debut. The guitarist “had sort of a blend of high-tech wizardry, but he was also a very soulful player and singer, he says.

weekendpass DEB LINDSEY (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)
Fast stacks The breakfast sandwich. In theory, it’s pretty simple: one or two eggs, cheese and maybe some meat jammed between bread. But in practice, D.C. restaurants have taken this classic and elevated it in unexpected ways. These five sandwiches will give you a little extra motivation to rise and dine. MEGAN MCDONOUGH (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Bacon egg sandwich Birds Eye Coffee Bar & Eatery, 1800 14th St. NW
The bacon banh mi ($9) at Doi Moi’s Southeast Asian-inspired coffee shop features a French baguette from Lyon Bakery; layers of five-spice, caramelglazed bacon; two sunny-side-up eggs; and fresh cilantro. Tucked between the thick-cut pork slices are pickled vegetables (carrot, shallot and daikon), makrut lime and green chili mayo, and red finger chilies.
Grains & Greens Glen’s Garden Market, 2001 S St. NW
The meatless Grains & Greens sandwich ($10.99) at this locavore deli, grocery store and beer bar is packed to the brim with scrambled eggs, melted cheddar, arugula, caramelized onions, cilantro, salsa verde and a handful of jalapeno peppers. Feeling decadent? Swap their multigrain bread for a homemade biscuit. This organic sandwich is available only on Saturdays and Sundays.

weekendpass Breakfast Sandwich
1811 14TH St NW
Elle, 3221 Mount Pleasant St. NW
Elle’s lone breakfast sandwich is small but mighty. The fist-size sandwich ($9) is packed with heaps of juicy, house-smoked brisket and fluffy egg that are sealed together by layers of Gruyere or cheddar cheese and placed in a homemade sesamepotato bun. This melty masterpiece will steal your heart and your napkins.

Sunrise Cafe 1102 17th St. NW
The Shyne
You can grab Advil, M&M’s and a cheap yet tasty breakfast at Sunrise Cafe. Think every combo of egg, cheese, meat and bread: Options start at $2.95 for an egg on toast and go up to $5.99 for an egg and cheese packed with hash browns and meat, served on toast, a croissant or a bagel.
Call Your Mother, 3301 Georgia Ave. NW
Carb cravers line up before 8 a.m. and usually wait 45 minutes for the self-described “Jew-ish” deli’s tasty and creative wood-fired bagel creations. The Shyne ($9) is an everything bagel filled with crispy, thick-cut bacon (or pastrami), scrambled egg, molten American and sharp cheddar cheese, and spicy honey. The honey, souped up with Little Red Fox’s hot sauce, delivers a surprisingly satisfying sweet-and-spicy kick.
At this pupuseria, $6 goes a long way: Each corn cake is priced at about $2.50, and one nearly covers your plate. There are 10 options to choose from — warm tortillas stuffed with gooey cheese and toppings ranging from beans and zucchini to fried pork and chicken. Can’t decide? Order the “mixta con todo,” the everything option.
Biscuit sammie with goat cheese and herbs
B Too
A Baked Joint, 440 K St. NW
The waffle irons are ready to go at 7:11 sharp weekday mornings at this Belgian restaurant. You have four choices of waffles under the $6 mark, including a $5.99 waffle with scrambled eggs and a $4.58 Liege waffle sprinkled with powdered sugar. The most intriguing (at $4.85) comes with a surprise: a poached egg in the center.
This dainty sandwich ($5.75) is light but pleasantly filling. Get the soft goat cheese mixed with tender herbs (such as chives and oregano, depending on what’s available) to create the perfect balance of flavor, fragrance and fluffiness. A dab of mayonnaise and an organic fried egg is squeezed between the two biscuit halves, creating a soft and buttery inside while maintaining a nice crumb outside.

Bobby Sanabria MultiVerse Big Band To call “West Side Story Reimagined” merely a covers album would understate drummer Bobby Sanabria’s musical ingenuity. To commemorate “West Side Story’s” 60th anniversary and the late composer Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday, Sanabria reworked the Broadway musical’s memorable score as a sweeping Latin-infused jazz record last year with his 22-piece MultiVerse Big Band. Now he’s touring behind the record, presenting the familiar songs for audiences in an unfamiliar way.

There are a multitude of ways to honor the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, from a parade to a day of service, but this annual concert at the Kennedy Center is always a great tribute. This year’s program is headlined by actress and singer Audra McDonald and Broadway star Brian Stokes Mitchell. They’ll be joined by the Let Freedom Ring Choir for a program that pays tribute to King’s legacy. Hip-Hop Museum Pop-Up Experience launch party What better way to kick off the opening of a hip-hop museum than with one of the genre’s pioneers? Headlining this party for the monthlong pop-up gallery is the Sugarhill Gang, whose 1979 track “Rapper’s Delight” was the first hip-hop song to land on Billboard’s Top 40. After Friday’s party, the museum will be open daily, showcasing hip-hop artifacts and memorabilia. Culture House, 700 Delaware Ave. SW; launch party: Fri., 6 p.m., sold out; pop-up museum: daily through Feb. 18, noon-6 p.m., free.
THURSDAY
Diplo Echostage, 2135 Queens Chapel Road NE; Thu., 9 p.m., $40-$50.
Chart the path of EDM and pop music over the past 15 years and one name will continue cropping up: Diplo. He broke through alongside M.I.A., founded the globe-trotting label Mad Decent, produced for everyone (including Beyonce), helped spur the Caribbean takeover of pop with Major Lazer, won Grammy awards and landed on Forbes lists. These days, he’s churning out pop hits with Sia in the LSD project, but he’s still an ace in the DJ booth.
The iconic drama “Twelve Angry Men” made its debut over half a century ago, but many of its themes still resonate. We all know the plot: Twelve sequestered jurors must decide the fate of a man accused of murder and, in the process, their convictions on issues such as race and the criminal justice system are confronted and re-evaluated. This production from Broadway director Sheldon Epps aims to examine discrimination and bias in particular. Ford’s Theatre, 511 10th St. NW; Fri. through Feb. 17, $20-$62.

On his confessional 2018 album “Pieces of a Man,” Mick Jenkins shifts between spitting rhymes about the religious upbringing that shaped his life and cooing silky melodies about self-motivation and authenticity. The album’s title is taken from a 1971 album by poet Gil Scott-Heron, and Jenkins’ first track, “Heron Flow,” begins with a spokenword treatise that serves as a sermonized mission statement for the record.

The changing face of film Actors who undergo major transformations are a staple of awards-season chatter, and this year is no exception. But no matter how talented an actor is, they never do it alone. Among those who help them physically embody their characters are often makeup artists, hair

Bale frequently changes his weight to play different characters — as Trevor Reznik in “The Machinist,” he shrank to just 120 pounds. But to play Dick Cheney in “Vice,” Bale instead gained 40 pounds by “eating a lot of pies” and, according to a piece published in The New York Times, he wore fleshy prosthetics created using an identical mold of his head. After makeup, the actor bore features such as the former vice president’s nose, his chin dimple and deep creases running from his nose to his jowls.
How do you make such a modern beauty look like a smallpox-suffering Queen Elizabeth I? A prosthetic nose and boils, an array of wigs, and a whole bunch of makeup. “Mary Queen of Scots” features various stages of the 16th-century monarch’s evolution — what makeup artist Jenny Shircore calls her “fresh and pretty stage” to her balding, pancake makeup stage. The latter took three hours of makeup. “When Elizabeth was losing her beauty because of the smallpox scarring, she harnessed what was left with makeup,” Shircore says.

‘Suspiria’
What stands out most about Malek’s Freddie Mercury might be his large teeth. Makeup, hair and prosthetics designer Jan Sewell had asked a specialist to create a prosthetic set comparable to the Queen frontman’s, according to Variety, but that overwhelmed Malek’s face. So it was scaled down. The actor’s jawline was already as strong as Mercury’s, Sewell said, but his eyes were too far apart. So they added a prosthetic nose that “pulled Rami’s eyes together” and finished the looks with fake mustaches and a variety of wigs.
Swinton and director Luca Guadagnino long denied rumors that she was actually Lutz Ebersdorf, an “actor” they insisted played the elderly male psychoanalyst Dr. Josef Klemperer in “Suspiria.” But in October, Swinton came clean to The New York Times about Ebersdorf’s true identity, and makeup artist Mark Coulier revealed how he made Swinton and her “very feminine bone structure” seem more masculine. “She had this nice, weighty set of genitalia,” Coulier says. “She managed to get it out on set on a couple of occasions.”
FILM
‘Ghostbusters’ rises from the dead (again)
Jason Reitman will direct and co-write a new movie in the original “Ghostbusters” franchise, the filmmaker told Entertainment Weekly. The movie will take place in the same universe as 1984’s “Ghostbusters” and 1989’s “Ghostbusters II” — both directed by Reitman’s father, Ivan — and is not connected to the 2016 reboot that starred Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy. The film is targeting a summer 2020 release. (EXPRESS)
THR: Julia Roberts not returning to “Homecoming”
Steve Carell to star in Netflix comedy series “Space Force”
‘The Punisher’ leaves a mark in second season TV REVIEW The pending and probably permanent separation of Netflix and Marvel in no way dampens the second season of “The Punisher.” Jon Bernthal’s “Punisher” and Krysten Ritter’s “Jessica Jones” are the only Marvel superhero series remaining in Netflix’s once-vast interconnected playground. “Iron Fist.” “Luke Cage.” Even “Daredevil,” after a stellar third season. All canceled. But don’t let that stop you from enjoying one of the best live-action Marvel performances: Bernthal was born to play Frank Castle. In Season 2 of “The Punisher,” which begins streaming Friday on Netflix, Frank is either protecting or punishing. The protecting benefits Amy (Giorgia Whigham), a teenage girl who gets caught up with the wrong crowd. The punishing? There’s plenty. The bad guys after Amy have a religious hit man (Josh Stewart) on call. He feels like bad-guy filler, though, until the confrontation between the Punisher and Jigsaw (Ben Barnes), Frank’s best friend, who turned out to be the monster behind his family’s killing. This might be as far as “The Punisher” goes. Netflix isn’t saying anything yet. This dark corner of Marvel’s superhero world could keep going. Maybe it will. Maybe it won’t at Netflix. If this is the end, it’s an end well worth a stream. DAVID BETANCOURT (TWP)

What’s more embarrassing than ‘Glitter’?
Engagement teased like an album release Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani are going to be announcing an engagement “very soon,” a source recently told Us Weekly. The two singers have been together for three years. The source told Us that “Blake has always wanted to marry Gwen, but she’s always been extremely cautious because she has three kids to be mindful of.” Stefani’s sons are from her previous marriage to Gavin Rossdale. People reported Wednesday that Mariah Carey is suing her former assistant Lianna Azarian for more than $3 million for breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty, extortion and invasion of privacy. The assistant allegedly recorded unflattering videos of the singer and threatened to release them if she were fired. People obtained a copy of the lawsuit, which states that Azarian “secretly filmed Mariah engaged in personal activities which, if revealed, Azarian knew would be personally embarrassing and professionally damaging to Mariah.” A Carey rep told People: “This new year welcomes Mariah’s continued efforts to clean the trash from her life.” (EXPRESS)

Clara McGregor denied calling her dad, Ewan McGregor, an “a--hole” in a now-deleted Instagram comment.
