Here’s a new idea for frustrated but crafty Metro commuters

A cat owner in Fareham, England, was rescued by firefighters Thursday after her attempt to rescue her cat from a tree went awry, BBC News reported. Maria Parry had been searching for her cat, Harry, for three days when she finally spotted him in a tree in a neighbor’s yard. After she rushed up the tree to get him, she couldn’t get back down. The Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service retrieved cat and owner with no harm to either. (EXPRESS)

Maine’s giant spinning ice disk that quickly gained international fame may have met its end. The natural formation in the Presumpscot River in Greater Portland stopped rotating Wednesday, two days after video of its movement went viral. The 100-yard disk is lodged against the river’s edge, preventing it from moving. Meteorologist Ryan Breton told the Portland Press Herald if the disk freezes into place, “that might be the end of it.” (AP)

Germany’s biggest rail company, under fire for its unpunctual service, has bought a commuter’s “delay scarf.” Deutsche Bahn bought the handmade scarf in an online auction for $8,600, which will go to charity. The Munich commuter knitted the gray, pink and red scarf last year. Each color reflects the amount of time her trip was delayed. Less than three-quarters of Deutsche Bahn’s long-distance trains arrived on time last year. (AP)

REGION

PornHub reports spike in traffic since shutdown

REGION Families throughout the Washington area recently rode the emotional arc of a winter storm, from sledding and snowmanbuilding to wet socks and crying kids. Many couples felt their cabin fever break when the snow began to melt. But for federal workers trapped in the void of the shutdown, there is no tomorrow. There is only one long today, with nothing to do but annoy the people they love most. F urloughed government worker Jesse Wilinski of Fredericksburg, Va., admitted the obvious Monday: “I’m very, very bored right now.” “He needs to be at work!” his wife, Morane Chung-Wilinski, shouted. “He’s in my way!” The pair have been married for 14 years. Throughout much of that time, Morane said, “I’ve seen him for one hour a day and it’s been great.” Now Jesse, an archives technician at the National Archives, is around all

the time. If the prolonged exposure continues, she added, “I’m afraid we might not be married for much longer.” Their humor is still intact, but their frustration is real. The shutdown, which has dragged through a fourth week with no sign of a thaw between President Trump and Democratic leaders, has caused less-public standoffs between spouses who rely on the federal government not only for a paycheck but also much-needed time apart. “When you said your vows, you had no idea what to expect,” said Jessica MacNair, a therapist who works with couples and owner of the Falls Church Wellness Center in Northern Virginia. “And this is one of those unexpected turns.” This particular turn has led some couples to MacNair’s couch. “I can barely handle the volume of referrals I’ve gotten in the last two weeks,” she said. It’s not just that the couples are strapped financially, MacNair

Traffic to PornHub from the D.C. region has jumped during the shutdown, according to the country’s largest porn site. A blog published Thursday by PornHub Insights reports that traffic from the D.C. region the week of Jan. 7-11 increased by 6.32 percent compared to traffic levels pre-shutdown. The U.S. as a whole saw an increase in traffic that same week, but not as much: 5.94 percent. (EXPRESS)

said, although that is a primary, existential source of anxiety. It’s also that their routines and roles have been upended. Is the furloughed partner suddenly responsible for all the housework? Additional parenting tasks? Mekita Rivas’ significant other, who didn’t want to be named because he wasn’t cleared to speak to the media, is processing a lot during his days away from the Department of Commerce. “I know he’s kind of

questioned, ‘Does my work even matter? Is there a point to what I’m doing?’ ” Rivas said. Rivas and her fiance have been saving for a wedding but now have to figure out how they’ll manage their college loans and credit card payments. “There has been additional tension,” Rivas said. “But I think we’re just trying to lean on each other to get through it.” They do, after all, still want to get married. Global protest has become a cause divided THE DISTRICT For thousands of women across the country, the first Women’s March on Washington was transformational. Many who had never participated in a protest were suddenly thrust into the heart of the “resistance” — pussyhats and all. It pushed them to keep protesting, to write letters, make phone calls and register voters. On Saturday during the thirdannual march, thousands of women again are expected in Washington. But while organizers wrote in a permit application weeks ago that they expect a similar turnout — hundreds of thousands — experts say they expect a fraction of that number. It’s not unusual for social movements to have peaks and valleys. Off-years — like third anniversaries in non-election years — make it challenging to energize a base that has protested since President Trump’s inauguration, said Dana Fisher, a University of Maryland sociology professor who studies protests and social movements. But the Women’s March is up

against more than just an off year. Secretive financial dealings, infighting and disputes over who gets to own and define the Women’s March, and allegations of anti-Semitism after one of the group’s co-chairs praised Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan have dogged organizers for months and led to calls for national co-chairs to resign. Several high-profile supporters and progressive organizations declined to participate in the rally this year. Women who previously went out of their way to attend are opting to stay home and support independent groups. Even the weather seems to be conspiring against it. A permit issued Thursday indicates about 10,000 attendees are expected, while D.C. police are preparing for 20,000. In cities like New York, Philadelphia and Washington, where groups wanted to separate from the national organization, there will be competing marches — each with their own speakers and rallies. Organizers in some cities have opted out altogether. Several organizations, including the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington, have severed ties with the D.C. event. Groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan on Thursday outlined some of his top priorities in his $46.6 billion budget plan for the next fiscal year. He said he will propose $9.3 billion for K-12 education as well as a new fund to create $3.5 billion for school construction over five years. Hogan is also proposing about $248 million in general funds for prevention and treatment of drug addiction. After Hogan formally submits the plan Friday, the General Assembly will spend much of the legislative session working on it. (AP) THE DISTRICT

Significantly fewer people are expected this year for the Women’s March.

What to expect The Women’s March in D.C., which begins Saturday at 10 a.m. at Freedom Plaza, will include speakers and performers, followed by a half-mile march past the Trump Hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue NW. and Emily’s List, a political action committee that backs female Democratic candidates who support abortion rights, are notably

absent from the march’s list of partners this year after previously supporting the event. Many who have participated in previous Women’s March events said the controversies have barely registered. Several said they hadn’t heard about those issues — or if they had, it didn’t affect their decision on whether to attend. “I am very saddened by the split,” said Laura Brevitz, 56, of Tamworth, N.H., who attended the 2017 march. “There is growth to be done by everybody, but I am not going to turn my back on the Women’s March.” MARISSA J. Front to bring below-zero chill

A cold front is expected to pass over the D.C. region Sunday, and winds will pick up behind it by night. Gusts in the immediate metro area could reach 40 mph. Mayor Bowser vetoes Metro fare evasion bill Mayor Muriel Bowser has rejected the D.C. Council’s decision to decriminalize Metro fare evasion, issuing her second-ever veto Wednesday amid concern the measure would exacerbate the transit agency’s financial problems. Bowser’s veto sends the bill back to the council — which approved the measure 10 to 2 — for an override vote. If the same vote holds, it would meet the required two-thirds threshold to become law. Fare evasion costs Metro $25 million to $50 million per year, Bowser said. “We should not encourage lawlessness on Metro,” she also said. (TWP)

So far, so good for Metro rush-hour bicycle policy Few complaints, but big test may come when federal shutdown ends METRORAIL During Metro’s first week allowing bikes on trains during rush hour, the change mostly brought shrugs from riders and a thumbsup from advocates. Despite some concerns that bikes would make already crowded trains feel even more packed, and riders’ fears of bicycle grease on their work clothes, there have been few complaints. “It hasn’t caused chaos and destruction of all things transportation-related in the region,” quipped Robert Gardner, advocacy director of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, which had pressed for the change. Twitter messages to Metro included complaints about broken escalators and cold air blasting on riders, but no horror stories about Metro’s decision to lift its ban on bicycles on trains between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays. “It’s off to a good start,” Metro spokeswoman Sherri Ly said. But Gardner acknowledged the jury is still out on the new policy, which began Jan. 7 — a week when the government shutdown had noticeably thinned the crowds on trains. While Metro hasn’t released ridership data during the shutdown, The Post reported that ridership last week was down about 50,000 trips per day on average through last Wednesday. Kelly Mack, who commutes to work on the Red Line in a motorized wheelchair, is still not convinced the end of the rush-hour bike ban is a good thing. “I can barely fit my wheelchair onto the evening trains during rush hour, so how will bicycles

manage?” she asked after the change was announced Jan. 2. Last week, she said she hadn’t seen any cyclists on the train yet. But, she said: “I don’t know what to expect when all those workers come back.” The week did bring an idea of what the policy means for cyclists and riders. When sleet started falling last week, David Whitehead got a first-hand look on the platform at Metro Center. “I realized a bunch of bikes were around me,” he said. “People weren’t going to hang out in the snow” — they were getting on Metro instead. That’s good news for Metro, which made the change partly in the hopes of attracting more riders. Besides those wanting to get out of the elements, the transit agency is also hoping to attract people who live or work away from stations, who will now be able to bike to trains. Cyclist Barb Sheehy plans

to take the train home on days when she’s too tired from work, tipsy from happy hour, or wants to avoid the weather, she said. Sheehy said before the change, there were times she’d have to wait until the rush-hour bike ban ended at 7 p.m. so she could bring her bike home on Metro. “But that means that by the time I get home, I’ve missed dinner,” she said, and her two daughters are already ready for bed. She has read comments online complaining about how some cyclists ride on the streets. Imagine how rude they’ll be on the train, many of those comments said. Sheehy does cop to running stop signs at times and cutting off drivers. “But if I jump a stop sign, I’m never going to see the driver again,” she said. In contrast, “I’m just not going to push myself on to a train with my bike and be stuck in a car with 200 people giving me the side-eye.” KERY MURAKAMI (EXPRESS)

of children who come into government custody cross the border alone. But the report found that in late 2016, 0.3 percent of children turned over to Health and Human Services had crossed with a parent and were separated. By summer 2017, that percentage had grown to 3.6 percent, officials said. The watchdog did not have exact numbers, but the total number of migrant children who passed through the agency’s care during the 2017 budget year was 40,810. The separated children had already been released to sponsors, who are generally parents or other close relatives. The inspector general did not say why the children had been separated before the zerotolerance policy. Immigration

IMMIGRATION It seems likely that thousands more migrant children were split from their families than the Trump administration has acknowledged, in part because officials were stepping up family separations long before the border policy that prompted a backlash last spring, a government watchdog said Thursday. It’s unclear just how many family separations occurred at the U.S.-Mexico border; immigration officials are allowed to separate families under certain circumstances. Health and Human Services, the agency tasked with caring for migrant children, did not adequately track them until after a judge ruled that children must be reunited with their families, according to the report by the agency’s inspector general. Ann Maxwell, assistant inspector general for evaluations, said the number of children removed from their parents was certainly larger than the 2,737 listed by the government in court documents. Those documents chronicled separations that took place as parents were criminally prosecuted for illegally entering the country under President Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy. “It’s certainly more,” Maxwell said. “But precisely how much more is unknown.” Most of the tens of thousands

Giuliani, who previously called the idea of Russian collusion “total fake news,” appears to have left open the possibility of improper contacts, in light of court filings in the past year that have detailed ties between Trump aides and Russia. “I never said there was no collusion between the campaign or between people in the campaign,” Giuliani told CNN in an interview Wednesday night. There was no collusion by President Trump in any way, shape or form. Likewise, I have no knowledge of any collusion by any of the thousands of people who worked on the campaign,” Giuliani said. Special counsel Robert Mueller has been investigating potential coordination between Russia and the president’s campaign. Trump has repeatedly insisted there was no collusion during his White House run. Giuliani has previously said that even if some on the campaign did something wrong, Trump was not part of any collusion. ERIC TUCKER (AP)

GOP’s March for Life?

Political polarization of abortion has some viewing Friday’s event as a Republican rally Trump denies Pelosi aircraft for trip abroad

CHIP SOMODEVILLA (GETTY IMAGES)

WASHINGTON The newest class in Congress heralds a redrawing of the battle lines in the ever-contentious fight over abortion. At the March for Life, the largest annual antiabortion event, which will take place Friday on the Mall, the increasing polarization of the anti-abortion movement as an almost solely Republican issue will be in stark relief. Leaders of the march enthusiastically welcome support from President Trump and from Vice President Pence — while insisting they want to maintain a bipartisan standpoint and a diverse crowd of attendees. Pence spoke to marchers just days after his inauguration in 2017, and Trump addressed the march by video feed in 2018 in a rambling address that touched on numerous Republican policy priorities, not just abortion. This year, Pence will speak at several events associated with the march. The march, which draws thousands of people annually, many of them youthful participants bused in from religious schools across the country, will also feature Democrats this year. Rep. Daniel Lipinski of Illinois, one of the only anti-abortion Democrats left in the House of Representatives, will speak at the 11 a.m. rally on the Mall, along with a Democratic state legislator from Louisiana. But some liberal-leaning antiabortion activists criticize the March for Life for alienating Democrats by embracing polarizing figures, from Trump and Pence to this year’s featured speaker, Ben Shapiro, a popular conservative commentator. “Look, when you’re streaming in video from Donald Trump and lifting up Ben Shapiro as your keynote, it doesn’t necessarily suggest that you’re too focused

Thousands of people rallied on the National Mall in Washington last year during the annual March for Life.

on broadening the tent,” said Michael Wear, a political strategist who worked for Barack Obama on outreach to religious voters and who advocates that Democrats be more open to religious views, including opposition to abortion. “Democrats generally feel marginalized at the March for Life.” Wear said the March for Life could take a different tack. He pointed to the Catholic Church as an example of an institution that has never wavered from its anti-abortion advocacy but has also kept at arm’s length from the Trump administration. Instead of Shapiro, he said, the March for Life could have invited a cardinal to speak — or an athlete or actor, all of whom the march has highlighted in the past. Jeanne Mancini, the president of the March for Life, said the march strives for balance, but the political climate doesn’t offer much. “We’re a bipartisan organization. And sadly, it’s gotten …

A decline in dissent? There are fewer Democrats or Republicans who disagree with their party’s majority on abortion than ever before. Kristen Day, executive director of Democrats for Life, pointed out that 64 Democrats supported a 2009 amendment from Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Mich., to Barack Obama’s signature health care law that sharply limited abortion coverage in certain health plans, while today she counts just six Democrats she believes would qualify as anti-abortion. There are just two “pro-choice” Republicans: Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. (TWP)

much more difficult to get Democrats to speak at the March for Life or just to be involved in the pro-life movement. We very actively pursue pro-life Democrats.” Voters are not as polarized as their elected representatives.

African Union demands Congo’s government delay announcing the final results of its disputed election

More than a third of Republican voters told Pew Research Center in 2017 that they think abortion should be legal in all or most cases, and 22 percent of Democrats said abortion should be illegal in all or most cases. Some activists involved in the March for Life say that even as the politics have become more polarized, the event has been more open to Democrats’ involvement since Mancini took over in 2012 from Nellie Gray, who founded the march in 1974, a year after the Roe v. Wade decision. But politics always creep in. “Last year, there were people within the pro-life movement, millennials, who were upset that Trump was addressing the March for Life,” said Kristan Hawkins, the president of Students for Life of America. “Millennials just don’t fall into the typical labels. I think the pro-life movement has to be aware of that.” JULIE ZAUZMER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

POLITICS It took President Trump one day to flex his executive power back at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, denying her an aircraft to visit troops abroad in apparent response to her attempt to delay his State of Union address. The nation’s two most powerful leaders appeared to be engaged in a game of constitutional one-upmanship as negotiations to end the monthlong partial government shutdown failed to produce results. In a letter to Pelosi on Thursday, Trump said the shutdown would have to delay her trip, which was to begin Thursday. “In light of the 800,000 great American workers not receiving pay, I’m sure you would agree that postponing this public relations event is totally appropriate,” he said. Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill said she planned to travel to Afghanistan and Brussels to thank service members and obtain briefings on national security and intelligence “from those on the front lines.” He noted that Trump had traveled to Iraq during the shutdown and said a Republican-led congressional trip also had taken place. Trump’s move to ground the speaker came after Pelosi threatened Trump’s planned Jan. 29 State of the Union address, saying the shutdown raised concerns about whether the forum could have adequate security. Republicans said she was merely trying to deny the president the stage. (AP)

Rescuers search for boy, 2, who fell into 360-foot hole

MSU fires interim president over insensitive comments

House GOP opposes plan to ease Russian sanctions

Spanish rescuers on the fourth day of a frantic race to reach 2-yearold Julen Rosello, who has been trapped in a borehole since Sunday, clung to hope of finding the toddler alive despite setbacks in getting to the bottom of the deep and narrow cavity in the countryside northeast of Malaga. Adults can’t fit in the 360-foot deep, 10-inch hole, and machinery hit an obstruction of soil and a stone about two-thirds of the way down. No contact had been made with Julen. The only sign of him found so far is hair that matched his DNA. An official said Thursday that efforts to create an alternative access point would begin Friday. (AP)

Michigan State University ousted its interim president, John Engler, on Thursday, a week ahead of his scheduled departure, as the school stepped up efforts to move beyond the Larry Nassar sex abuse scandal. The board of trustees forced out Engler over his comments that some of the female gymnasts and other athletes whom the campus sports doctor molested had been enjoying the “spotlight.” Nassar was arrested in 2016. MSU named Satish Udpa as its new interim president. Udpa said he wants to create an environment that makes victims “whole.” “That’s the single-most important priority for me,” he said. (AP)

In a rebuke to the Trump administration, 136 Republicans joined House Democrats on Thursday to oppose a plan to lift Russian sanctions against companies controlled by an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The 362to-53 vote will not prevent the easing of sanctions on three companies connected to Oleg Deripaska, a Russian with ties to ex-Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, because Senate Republicans blocked a similar measure Wednesday. But the House vote means that a majority of Republicans on the Hill oppose Trump’s efforts to soften punitive measures. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

RECORDS AT STAKE

Why age matters this postseason

NFL PLAYOFFS | ANALYSIS

Ready for rematches

In the AFC championship, the Chiefs and Patriots will face off in a rematch of New England’s memorable 43-40 victory in October. In the NFC title game, the Rams get another shot at the Saints in New Orleans after having lost there 45-35 in November. Let’s take a look at the factors in each matchup that will determine who advances to the Super Bowl. JOHN CLAYTON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

NFC CHAMPIONSHIP

AFC CHAMPIONSHIP

Los Angeles Rams at New Orleans Saints

New England Patriots at Kansas City Chiefs

3:05 p.m. Sunday, Fox

6:40 p.m. Sunday, CBS

It all starts up front: Saints coach Sean Payton doesn’t get enough credit for regularly putting together great offensive lines, and they are loaded again this year, with Pro Bowlers Max Unger and Terron Armstead and Pro Bowl alternate guards Larry Warford and Andrus Peat. But the Rams have also been great up front, and the blocking of their offensive line was one of the keys to their 30-22 win over Dallas on Saturday. L.A.’s talented line paved the way for running back C.J. Anderson. He rushed for 123 yards on 23 carries, allowing the Rams to ease Todd Gurley into his return from a knee injury. Gurley still contributed 115 yards on 16 carries. L.A. will need to run the ball and control the clock to beat the Saints. Drew Brees is really hard to beat at home: The just-turned 40-year-old quarterback is 6-0 at home in the playoffs for New Orleans, having thrown 14 TDs to two interceptions and never posting a passer rating below 96.2.

That’s why it wasn’t surprising to see Brees rally the Saints after their slow start against Philadelphia. Rams coach Sean McVay says his team has learned a lot since that November loss in New Orleans, but no matter what adjustments they make, beating Brees in the Superdome is no easy task. The Eli Apple trade will have an impact: The midseason trade for the struggling former first-round cornerback of the Giants has flown under the radar, but it has had a big impact on the Saints’ pass coverage. Apple’s ability to play man coverage has allowed the Saints to play less zone, and that will matter when facing the Rams’ talented top two targets — Brandin Cooks and Robert Woods. New Orleans has a true shutdown corner in Marshon Lattimore, who had two picks last week. The Saints are able to use him in that role because of the presence of Apple. The Saints’ ability to play man coverage Sunday will free them to be creative in drawing up schemes to stop the Rams.

Tom Brady on the road is different from Tom Brady at home: This year’s AFC title runs through Kansas City, not Foxborough. Brady is 28-10 as a playoff quarterback, the greatest record ever. But he’s not used to being on the road in January. He has a 3-4 record on the road in the playoffs and, believe it or not, he hasn’t won a road playoff game since 2006. Brady is in his eighth consecutive AFC championship game. During that stretch, he’s played a title game on the road only twice, losing to the Broncos in the 2013 and 2015 seasons. In home playoff games, Brady’s TD-to-interception ratio is 46-to-18. In those seven road playoff games, it’s 8-to-8. In this matchup, Brady’s challenge is trying to minimize the Chiefs’ pass rush trio of Justin Houston, Dee Ford and Chris Jones. New England’s running backs need to step up: One of the stories of the Patriots’ win over the Chargers was their success on the ground, led by rookie Sony Michel’s

ESPN: Yankees, relief pitcher Adam Ottavino agree to 3-year, $27 million deal

129-yard game and three TDs. But equally important was their running backs’ role in the passing game, as Brady targeted them on 19 of his 44 attempts. James White caught 15 passes, tying a playoff record. That will matter against the Chiefs, who gave up a league-high six passing TDs to running backs this season and are vulnerable at linebacker. Patrick Mahomes has been great, and his supporting cast is getting better: Mahomes followed d his 50-TD season with a great performance against the Colts, completing 27 of 41 passes for 278 yards. Mahomes has the look of a QB destined to win multiple Super Bowls. He’s a gunslinger in the mold d of Brett Favre. He’s a great running QB in the mold of Russell Wilson. He has the smarts of Drew Brees. The Chiefs’ offense also has gotten a boost from the return from injury of Sammy Watkins, who caught six passes for 62 yards versus the Colts, s, and the emergence of Damien Williams, who rushed for 129 yards on 25 carries.

It’s not polite to talk about someone’s age, but it will certainly be a topic of conversation for the rest of these NFL playoffs. The Patriots’ Tom Brady, 41, and the Saints’ Drew Brees, 40, would be the oldest QBs to win a Super Bowl — an honor currently claimed by Peyton Manning, who was 39 when he won Super Bowl 50 with the Broncos. Meanwhile, the Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, 23, would be the youngest QB to win a championship — a few months younger than Ben Roethlisberger was when he won Super Bowl XL. And at just 32, the Rams’ Sean McVay, below, is trying to supplant the Steelers’ Mike Tomlin (36 when he won Super Bowl XLIII) as the youngest coach to win the title. JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

CAPITALS VS. ISLANDERS | 7:30 P.M. FRIDAY, NBCSWA

Trotz is back in D.C. for a night

Capitals’ former coach makes first visit since post-Cup departure

BRUCE BENNETT (GETTY IMAGES)

CAPITALS In his four seasons as Capitals head coach, Barry Trotz frequently reminded his players to “collect standings points.” There was an expectation to halt any potential losing streak before it grew into a concern. It’s a message the current Capitals could abide by after back-to-back losses to St. Louis and Nashville this week. The Capitals (27-14-5) have lost six of their past nine games as they prepare to host Trotz and the New York Islanders (26-15-4) on Friday. “We need to get it together,” said winger Tom Wilson. “We’ve got to fix our game a little bit.” Doing so against the Islanders won’t be easy. In his first year as New York’s bench boss, Trotz has the traditionally dormant squad in the thick of the playoff race. As of Thursday, the Islanders

The Islanders under coach Barry Trotz have given up the fewest goals in the NHL this season.

had won 12 of their past 15 games to pull within three points of the Capitals and Blue Jackets for first place in the Metropolitan Division. After allowing the most goals in the NHL last season, the Islanders have given up the fewest this year. “If you ask him, I’m sure he’s not surprised,” Capitals center

Nicklas Backstrom said. “He’s got that tendency to bring in a good system and to make sure you focus on the right things, and he’s always pushing guys to get better.” Trotz coached the Capitals from 2014 to 2018, culminating in the franchise’s first Stanley Cup in June. e. He resigned 11 days

later, when he and the club could not agree on a new contract. Trotz then signed a five-year, $20 million deal with New York. Friday marks Trotz’s first trip to Washington since then. A video tribute is planned and a warm reception is expected. Trotz laid the groundwork for success in his first season with the Capitals, who had missed the playoffs the previous year and needed direction. “He really talked about accountability and about buying in and that’s what this team needed,” Wilson said. “We had a lot of skill in the room, but we weren’t necessarily playing the right team game on any given night.” Trotz went 205-89-34 during his four seasons in Washington and was named the NHL’s Coach of the Year in 2015-16. “We all know what Barry’s done for us here as players and for us as a city, and it’s pretty special,” Backstrom said. “I’m sure he will be well-received here [Friday] and he should be. He deserves de eserves it.” it ” BEN N RABY (FO (FOR F R EXPRESS) FO

NO. 1 DUKE VS. NO. 4 VIRGINIA | 6 P.M. SATURDAY, ESPN

ACC juggernauts collide in Durham, N.C.. The past two ACC regular-season champions face off Saturday when Duke (14-2)) hosts Virginia (16-0). Here are three keys to the top-five showdown. JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS) RESS) Replacing Jones

Beyond the arc

A test of strengths hs

Duke will have to move on without its floor general for a while after Tre Jones sprained his shoulder in Monday’s loss at home in overtime to unranked Syracuse. Jones was third in the country in assist-to-turnover ratio at a staggering 5.7, but what Duke may miss most is his ability to pressure the ball. Alex O’Connell will have to play heavier minutes and RJ Barrett will have to handle the ball more, which could affect Duke’s offensive flow.

Virginia is seventh in the nation in 3-point shooting (40.9 percent). In Tuesday night’s 81-59 dismantling of No. 9 Virginia Tech, the Cavaliers connected on 13 of 24 3-pointers (54.2 percent). Virginia has five players with at least 10 made 3s this season, but Kyle Guy and Ty Jerome are the biggest long-range threats. And Virginia is even more impressive defensively, allowing opponents to shoot an NCAA-low 25.1 percent from 3-point range.

Duke has three future top-10 NBA draft picks in freshmen hmen Zion Williamson, RJ Barrett arrett and Cameron Reddish. Virginia, ginia, one of two undefeated d Division I men’s basketball teams ms left, has no lottery prospects. cts. The Blue Devils’ three phenoms noms average a combined 57.9 7.9 points a game — 6.2 points oints per game more than the Cavaliers’ avaliers’ defense allows. This will be the best defense Duke hass faced and the most talented team Virginia has seen.

Goaltend helps Wizards outlast Knicks abroad WIZARDS 101, KNICKS 100 Allonzo Trier was called for goaltending on a Thomas Bryant layup attempt with 0.4 seconds remaining, giving the Wizards a 101-100 win over the New York Knicks in London on Thursday. The Wizards outscored the Knicks 24-11 in the fourth quarter, capping a 19-point rally by a team that’s rarely successful away from Washington. The Wizards are 5-18 this season on the road, although the London game counts as a home win for the team. Bradley Beal, above, scored 26 points and had nine rebounds and Otto Porter Jr. had 20 points and 11 rebounds. Noah Vonleh gave the Knicks a 100-99 edge with a onehanded finish over Bryant with 33.7 seconds remaining, and a 3-pointer by Beal rimmed out. New York’s Kevin Knox tried to run down the clock, but his off-balance 3-point attempt missed the rim and led to a shotclock violation with 3.3 seconds left. That left Washington with a last opportunity, and Beal drove the lane before dumping the ball off to Bryant just before the buzzer. Before the game, Wizards owner Ted Leonsis said that he would “never, ever tank” and that Washington (19-26), which has reached the playoffs four of the past five seasons, would push to do so again. “I don’t think you can tell a coach, ‘Don’t try to win,’” Leonsis said. “I would never do that.” ZAC BOYER (AP)

“Glass” stars, from left, Samuel L. Jackson, James McAvoy and Bruce Willis as characters they shouldn’t have reprised.

ALSO OPENING

UNIVERSAL PICTURES

‘Cold War’ is an ode to sensuality

An unfortunate twist M. Night Shyamalan’s mash-up sequel ‘Glass’ ends up shattering viewers’ hopes

FILM REVIEW Like director Alfred Hitchcock before him, M. Night Shyamalan has a habit of popping up in his films. His latest movie is no exception, with the auteur making a cameo appearance in “Glass” as a customer at a home-security store. The brief scene is gently amusing, in a way that the writerdirector is otherwise not, in this annoyingly self-referential — and self-indulgent — superhero story. But that’s where the comparisons to Hitchcock end. “Glass” is a movie so muddled and so meta that it not only seeks to implicitly remind you how movies work, but it includes a character who explicitly comments upon the action. That character, played by Samuel L. Jackson, lends the film

its title. Elijah Price, a devotee of comics literature who has adopted the moniker of Mr. Glass (for the propensity of his bones to shatter at the slightest bump), doesn’t talk for much of the film, but when he does start, he’s like the nerd in the seat next to you who won’t shut up. Introduced in Shyamalan’s 2000 film “Unbreakable,” and mentioned again at the very end of Shyamalan’s 2017 film “Split,” Jackson’s character is the evil genius of this interconnected trilogy. Bruce Willis’ “Unbreakable” hero, David Dunn — a man with superhuman invulnerability — also reappears here. Likewise, James McAvoy reprises his role from “Split.” Make that his roles; as a seria serial killer with dissociative

identity disorder, his Kevin Wendell Crumb has a couple dozen distinct personalities. “Glass” begins with Kevin still busy abducting and murdering teenage girls in Philly. Meanwhile, David has undertaken to hunt him down. After the two meet, briefly fight and

are captured by police, they are summarily committed to a psychiatric hospital. It is there that they encounter Elijah, a fellow patient who appears to be in a drug-induced, catatonic state. It is also at the hospital that we meet Dr. Ellie Staple (Sarah Paulson), the psychiatrist who has been tasked with curing these three men of what she calls their “delusion” that they have superpowers. Shyamalan’s aim is to deconstruct the superhero myth. But he takes it apart in such a way ay that it no longer functions as ennle tertainment. “Cold War” is a nearperfect film, an artfully crafted, flawlessly acted meditation on love, memory and invented history that’s deeply personal and politically attuned. In postWorld War II Poland, Wiktor (Tomasz Kot) is traveling with what seems to be a group of ethnomusicologists when he meets a singer named Zula (Joanna Kulig) — marking the beginning of a turbulent love affair. Written and directed by Pawel Pawlikowski, this ode to erotic desire and sociological fate shimmers with a sensuous beauty that begins with two charismatic actors and gains force with a visual and sound design every bit as alluring as the film’s magnetic human elements. What would Laurel and Hardy be without Ida and Lucille?

Hulu beats out Netflix in the Fyre doc wars

Another fine Mrs.: The wives do it all in ‘Stan & Ollie’ The opening scene of “Stan & Ollie” takes place at the pinnacle of the Laurel and Hardy age; in a lovely long take, the comedy duo (Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly, respectively) head to their soundstage, making small talk using the affectionate shorthand reserved for good friends. They chat about Hardy’s recent divorce (and more recent engagement), touch on contract negotiations, make plans for a weekend boat trip with Myrna Loy and other Hollywood stars. The next scene is set more than a decade later. Things aren’t going so well; now the two, who haven’t worked together in years, are headed out on a grueling tour of the U.K.

in an attempt to reignite careers that have long gone cold. That affectionate shorthand is now punctuated with awkward silences, and the chumminess is shadowed with mistrust. Both Reilly and Coogan give outstanding performances. It would be easy to say that Reilly is unrecognizable as the portly Hardy, except that you can still see his empathetic eyes peering out. Coogan deftly switches between playing Stan’s onscreen personality — the simpler, more innocent one of the pair — and his real one as the brains behind the majority of their sketches. It’s work to be proud of. And they both get totally outmatched. Nina Arianda and Shirley Henderson play Ida Laurel and Lucille Hardy, the women behind the men. The two have

Deadline: Kevin Hart to star in “Monopoly” movie

nothing in common except that each is currently the wife of a famous man. Lucille is a sensible American girl, worried for her husband’s health and averse to doing the publicity required to fill the seats on the British tour. Ida is a Russian ballerina who moved to Hollywood apparently to continually remind everyone that she is a Russian ballerina who moved to Hollywood. For appearance’s sake the two have to maintain the facade of friendship, so they smilingly attend shows together. Underneath that polite pantomime is a war of riffs and rips. Underneath that, there’s even more. Though the two women have a barely restrained dislike for each other, they also are the only two women in the world who understand what it’s like to be married to these fading

‘Stan & Ollie’ (PG, 97 min.) DIRECTOR: Jon S. Baird STARS: Steve Coogan, John C. Reilly, Nina Arianda, Shirley Henderson IN A NUTSHELL: Fading comedy duo Laurel and Hardy can’t shake the specter of their past while on a variety hall tour of England in 1953.

stars. While Stan and Ollie have a complicated relationship — they like each other, they need each other, but they don’t necessarily like how much they need each other — Ida and Lucille’s requires the same amount of balance, if not more. While Stan and Ollie keep their focus on Stan and Ollie, Ida and Lucille are not only engaged in their own rivalry, but are doing it while caring for their husbands’ needs at all times. Their presence in “Stan & Ollie” illustrates what a lot of women do a lot of the time — balance their relationships on one hand, while balancing the needs of their family on the other, while balancing work on the other, while trying to wave all that guilt away with the other. (All women have at least four hands.) With no more than four or five scenes, Arianda and Henderson quite nearly dominate the film by showing just how strong a woman has to be to be the woman behind the man, and how she has to subdue that strength so that he can have his spotlight. Variety: Anne Hathaway cast in Robert Zemeckis’ “The Witches” film

STREAMING The notorious Fyre Festival was promoted as an elite concert event in the Bahamas. Instead, as most everyone knows, the 2017 festival was a disaster. Most of Fyre’s selfie-obsessed attendees, who’d paid thousands of dollars to attend, were stranded on a gravel spit with little food, water or shelter, and worst of all, spotty internet access. Now, there are two competing documentaries out this week. The first, released this past Monday on Hulu, is co-directors Julia Willoughby Nason and Jenner Furst’s “Fyre Fraud”; the second, premiering today on Netflix, is director Chris Smith’s “Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened.” Both documentaries are similarly rooted in a righteous sense of outrage toward Fyre Festival impresario Billy McFarland, a tech entrepreneur and con artist with an unlimited appetite for preying on his generation’s obsession with VIP treatment and personal branding. But Hulu’s “Fyre Fraud” edges out Netflix’s film by stepping back and delivering on the stronger, more despairing theme here, which is very clearly this: Society is losing its ability to sense a snake in the grass. Both “Fyre Fraud” and “Fyre” should give any viewer pause to reflect — and reflect again — on the degree to which we’re all being had. HANK STUEVER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

“If I was Post Malone, I’d just let Rita Ora be me in all music videos.”

@THOR_BENSON, blasting fellow Twitter user @warroom for posting a photo of his Gillette razor in the toilet in protest of the company’s “The Best Men Can Be” ad, which urges men to hold each other accountable for misogynistic behaviors. Twitter users piled on the snark for the overreaction — and for the plumbing no-no.

@ASYMETRICALHOMO, tweeting about The Hollywood Reporter passing off a photo of Rita Ora dressed as Post Malone as an actual photo of the rapper. The image of Ora’s Halloween costume, right, appeared in a tweet announcing that Post Malone, Cardi B and Camila Cabello will perform at the Grammys in February. The Hollywood Reporter deleted the tweet and sent out a follow-up with a real photo of the musician, but not before Twitter users noticed the error.

“I am OK with this new sweaty Slack logo.” @DAVATRON5000, reacting to the updated logo that the group messaging app rolled out Wednesday. Slack explained the change in a blog post, saying that because of its precise angles and 11 colors, the old logo “looked terrible” on some platforms and backgrounds. Slack said the simpler look with a reduced color palette is an effort to build brand cohesion.

“‘Time is not something I acknowledge’ I say as I enter class 10 minutes late with the coffee that made me 10 minutes late.” @IAMTHEAARDVARK, joking about singer Mariah Carey’s contribution to the viral “10-year challenge,” in which people compare photos of themselves from 2009 and 2019. Carey posted the same pic twice with the caption, “I don’t get this 10-year challenge, time is not something I acknowledge.”

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
