Rick Perry salutes Thursday after announcing he was suspending his campaign and endorsing Newt Gingrich in North Charleston, S.C.

Day of GOP Upheaval Ahead of S.C. debate, Perry drops out, backs Gingrich as ‘visionary’ Dehj^ 9^Whb[ijed" I$9$ The race for the Republican presidential nomination is veering toward South Carolina surreal. Mitt Romney was stripped of his Iowa caucus victory Thursday, then was stung by Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s withdrawal and endorsement of Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker who was stunningly accused in turn by

an ex-wife of seeking an open marriage so he could keep his mistress. “Newt’s not perfect, but who among us is?” said Perry, quitting the race shortly before an evening debate and less than 48 hours before the polls open in Saturday’s first-in-the-South primary. Perry also called Gingrich a “conservative visionary who can transform our country.” His decision to end a once-promising candidacy left Romney, Gingrich, former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum and Texas Rep. Ron Paul the remaining contenders in the race to pick a Republican to challeng Demo-

The number of final, certified votes Rick Santorum had ahead of Mitt Romney in the Iowa caucus, Iowa Republican Chairman Matt Strawn said Thursday. The Iowa Republican party cannot declare a winner, because the results are incomplete — eight of the state’s 1,774 precincts did not report their certified totals by Wednesday’s 5 p.m. deadline, Strawn said. Recent polls, coupled with Perry’s endorsement, suggested Gingrich was the candidate with the momentum and Romney the one struggling to

In an up-and-down campaign day, Newt Gingrich picked up an endorsement Thursday from Rick Perry but also faced explosive accusations from his second ex-wife, Marianne Gingrich, left, that he had asked her for permission to have an “open marriage” after she learned he was having an affair with Callista Bisek, who is now his wife. Responding to excerpts from Marianne Gingrich’s interview, Newt Gingrich’s spokesman R.C. Hammond said the revelations “couldn’t be any more opposite of the truth.” The interview was set to air Thursday night on ABC News. (AP)

validate his standing as front-runner. Whatever else the impact, the day’s events reduced the number of conservatives vying to emerge as Romney’s principal alternative. The former Massachusetts governor had other challenges in a state, where unemployment approaches 10 percent. He adamantly refused to explain why some of his millions were invested in the Cayman Islands, how much was there or whether any other funds were held offshore. Under pressure from his rivals to release his income tax returns before the weekend — a demand first made by Perry in a debate on Monday — Romney told reporters it wouldn’t happen. “You’ll hear more about that. April,” he said. DAVID ESPO (AP)

PIPA bill withdrew their support Wednesday amid a one-day protest blackout by Wikipedia and other Web giants and a ood of emails to Capitol Hill ofďŹ ces that at times doubled normal volumes. “The overwhelming input I’ve received from New Hampshire citizens makes it clear there are many legitimate concerns that deserve further consideration before Congress moves forward with this legislation,â€? said Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., one of the senators who pulled back her support of the bill. The Senate bill, and the parallel Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in

the House, would allow the Justice Department and copyright holders to seek court orders against foreign websites that steal from American content creators. It would bar advertising networks and payment facilitators such as credit card companies from doing business with the offending websites. The bills have the strong support of the entertainment industry, which loses billions every year to foreign copyright violators and from industries such as pharmaceuticals battling fake and sometimes harmful alternatives sold on the Internet. Cruise leader saved lives after ship hit a reef, woman says

Ceh[ J^Wd =k_Z[b_d[i Seafaring tradition holds that the captain should be last to leave a sinking ship. But is it realistic? Seamen have expressed near-universal outrage at Capt. Francesco Schettino, who is accused of abandoning his sinking cruise ship off the Tuscan coast and could face up to 12 years in prison. A captain’s responsibilities are laid out in the International Safety Management Code, though it doesn’t say when a captain can leave a stricken ship. The tradition of a captain standing by his ship isn’t established in international maritime law, though some countries, including Italy, have included it in national laws. (AP)

Massive Protest Grips Romania 8kY^Wh[ij" HecWd_W Thousands of Romanians marched through their capital on Thursday to demand the resignation of their government for imposing harsh austerity measures in order to receive international loans for the nation’s battered economy. It was one of the largest protests in recent times in Bucharest and came after a week of sometimes violent anti-government demonstrations.

As the march reached University Square, protesters blocked traffic and shouted what has become a trademark slogan aimed at President Traian Basescu: “Get out, you miserable dog.” The square is historically significant for Romanians because it was a centerpiece of the 1989 anti-communist revolution that led to Romania’s birth of democracy. Police said 7,000 attended the rally, while organizers claimed the crowd was far larger. (AP)

Six months after the U.N. declared Somalia’s capital a famine zone, the number of refugees in the capital is dwindling, as most of the men have gone home to try to revive devastated herds and withered crops. The women, and kids, would like to join them, but many don’t have enough money. That means fewer hands on the farm and a smaller harvest. Seasonal rains have fallen in recent weeks, raising hopes the drought will improve. “We can go back and feed ourselves without depending on anybody,” said Halima Mohammed Abdulla, a mother of five who has been living for five months in a Mogadishu refugee camp, where hardship, and danger, remain.

8WYaijeho The U.N. on July 20 declared parts of Somalia a famine zone — defined as when hunger daily kills two adults or four kids per 10,000 people and a third of children are acutely malnourished — and later expanded it. Britain says between 50,000 and 100,000 people have since died. (AP)

U.N. personnel say six explosive devices have been found or detonated in Mogadishu in recent days, including a blast Thursday near a refugee camp that killed two police officers and four refugees. Dangers also remain in the countryside. One refugee, Halima Haji Mohammed Omar, said she does not want to return home because of militants. “How can I go back? There is no reason to back when there is still a war,” she said. “They beat us; they conscripted our children.” (AP)

Metro Theft Alleged 2 workers face charges of taking thousands in cash from the agency MWi^_d]jed Metro employee Horace McDade typically spent his days traveling from one subway station to another, collecting bills and coins from fare machines. Usually, Transit Police officer Vincent Haile was nearby, watching over McDade as he made his rounds and trucked the cash to a collection facilit y in Alexandria. But aut horities allege that the two men have Haile been taking an unofficial detour, driving to a spot under the Capital Beltway a few hundred ya rds from the collection building and McDade hiding part of the day’s take. When their shift was done, they would return in their own cars and make off with the money. On Wednesday night, federal authorities arrested the two and charged them with conspiring to commit theft. Surveillance tapes and a confidential source revealed that Haile used bags of the collected coins to buy lottery tickets, according to an affidavit filed in U.S. District Court. He often hit the jackpot, collecting close to $63,000 in lottery winnings over the past four years. J^[ Fkhfehj[Z Fbej The pair systematically worked rail stations on all five of Metro’s rail lines and would use a transit authority van to carry cash to the collection facility, according to officials involved in the case who were not authorized to speak publicly. Investigators found that Transit Police Officer Vincent Haile would often switch his security assignment with other police officers so he could work with Horace McDade. Once finished with their shifts, the affidavit says, the two would ride through a parking lot at a Marriott Courtyard hotel on Eisenhower Avenue to an underpass and hide bags of money. When they got off work, each man would return separately — Haile in a gray Jaguar and McDade in a green Ford — to get their stashed cash and go their separate ways. Investigators placed tracking devices on their cars and the Metro van. The underpass is located about a quarter-mile from Metro’s revenue collection facility and is in the opposite direction of Haile’s route to his Woodbridge, Va., home, authorities said. (T WP)

conference is set for Monday. If convicted, McDade and Haile face a maximum penalty of five years in prison. It was unclear how much money may have been stolen. Prosecutors say that Haile’s bank records show unexplained cash deposits of more than $150,000 since 2008, and the investigation is ongoing. The FBI was first tipped off to the alleged scheme in September when it learned about a man in a police uniform who routinely purchased several hundred dollars’ worth of scratch-off lottery tickets from a Woodbridge store, according to the affidavit filed by Metro Transit Police Capt. Kevin P. Gaddis. A source told agents that the

officer had been coming in for about three years, at first with “what he could hold in his hands” — about 50 to 100 coins — and later bringing in bags containing about $500 in change, the affidavit says. The source said Haile spent $13,050 in October, $7,780 in November and $7,350 in December. Haile was pretty good at winning: Records from the Virginia Lottery show Haile won $32,000 last year, $17,000 in 2010, $8,400 in 2009 and $5,400 in 2008, according to the affidavit. The document said an informant told officials Haile had also cashed winning tickets for less than $600. Records aren’t required for the lesser amounts.

Metro chief spokesman Dan Stessel said Thursday that the two men had been suspended without pay and that their jobs with Metro were “pending termination.” McDade had worked for Metro since February 1979. Haile had worked for the Metro Transit Police department since August 1997. The supervisor of the revenue facility in Alexandria has also “been relieved of his duties,” according to a Metro press release. Metro Transit Police Chief Michael Taborn is expected to conduct a “top-to-bottom assessment of all policies and procedures” involving officers assigned to the revenue collection unit, of f ic i a l s sa id. D A N A H E D G P E T H (THE WASHINGTON POST )

EJ>;H FBEJI The two arrests made this week don’t mark the first time Metro employees have been accused of stealing cash. In 2004, Metro switched from allowing patrons to pay with cash at its parking facilities to requiring they use electronic SmarTrip cards after an investigation found cashiers hired by a contractor stole millions of dollars in revenue over several years. Metro General Manager Richard Sarles said the transit agency’s chief financial officer will “immediately bring in forensic accountants to conduct a thorough review of control systems and management over revenue systems to fully understand how wrongdoing occurred and to implement tighter detection systems.” (T WP)

Monument to Remain Closed Until 2013 Complex repair job is in planning stage, Mall officials say MWi^_d]jed Repair of the earthquake-damaged Washington Monument will be a complex project that could require some kind of external scaffolding as well as months of work that will probably keep the monument closed until 2013. National Park Service officials detailed some preliminary work plans Thursday as they announced a private donation of $7.5 million toward the project. The federal government is paying the rest of the estimated $15 million tab. The 555-foot-tall monument has been closed since the magnitude-5.8 earthquake struck the area Aug. 23. Bob Vogel, superintendent of the National Mall and Memorial Parks, said at a news conference Thursday that the Park Service has awarded a contract for the planning phase of the job. The company of Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, which used

workers suspended on ropes to conduct the exterior inspection of the monument after the quake, already is designing the plan, Vogel said. The contract for the execution of the repairs will probably not be awarded until late summer, with work starting after that.

“This is a complex job,” he said. “This is a one-of-a-kind structure that poses challenges for repair that other buildings don’t.” Park officials said they were not sure whether the monument would remain closed the whole time, but Vogel said that was likely. The news conference was called to mark the donation to the monument by David M. Rubenstein, a billionaire Bethesda philanthropist. “I would suggest that [the monument] hadn’t even stopped shaking before David Rubenstein came to me and asked if

8WYaijeho The Washington Monument shook violently during the magnitude-5.8 earthquake on Aug. 23, especially near the top, and many of its stone blocks were cracked and chipped on both the interior and exterior. What they found included cracks up to 1 1/4 inches wide in the mortar and stone of structure’s pyramid-shaped top, the worst of the damage. (T WP)

he could help,” said Jonathan B. Jarvis, director of the National Park Service. Rubenstein, 62, is co-founder and managing director of the Carlyle Group, a global assetmanagement firm that handles $148 billion in assets, according to its website. He also is chairman of Washington’s John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, where he is the single largest donor in its history, with gifts totaling $25 million. Forbes magazine estimates his worth at $2.7 billion. Rubenstein said he has been fortunate in life and wants to donate to worthy causes. “I don’t want my executor to give it all away,” he said. “I’d like to have the pleasure of giving away to things that I think are good while I’m alive. The country’s been wonderful to me. The city’s been wonderful to me and my family.” MICHAEL E. RUANE (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady is 4-1 lifetime against the Ravens heading into Sunday’s AFC title game in Foxborough, Mass.

Best of Enemies Ravens, Brady share admiration ahead of the AFC title game Fhe <eejXWbb The Baltimore Ravens’ defense intends to spend much of Sunday afternoon harassing New England quarterback Tom Brady and burying him in the pocket. Until that time, the game plan evidently is to smother him with praise. Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs got into a shouting match with Brady in 2009 after the quarterback appeared to be demanding a penalty flag for a late hit. More recently, Suggs suggested that Brady’s two Super Bowl wins were

“questionable” and that he continues to receive preferential treatment from officials. Suggs abandoned the grudge Wednesday. “There is no beef,” he insisted.

“I guess the genesis of that, it was the incident in ’09 where I almost hit him below the waist. I’ve gotten over it. There’s where it all started, but you grow and mature. As you all can clearly see, I am not the same guy I was back in ’09. I am definitely 20 pounds lighter, too.” The Ravens have plenty of reasons to respect Brady. The cold facts

are that he threw six touchdown passes last week in a 45-10 rout of Denver and is 4-1 lifetime against Baltimore — the lone loss coming in the 2008 playoffs. In four regularseason games against Baltimore, Brady has helped the Patriots generate 24, 27, 27 and 23 points. No wonder Ray Lewis has this to say about Sunday’s opponent: “You’re talking about arguably one of the two best quarterbacks of all time.” Brady, similarly, has decided it’s wiser to say nice things about the Ravens than to give them added incentive to come after him Sunday. “I have a lot of respect for them and their ability to play and perform under pressure,” Brady said. “They’ve been in the playoffs the last four years, and they’ve won playoff games in the last four years. They’re a tough team. What goes on off the field and the comments that guys make really has no bearing or impact on this game, nor will it. A lot of my focus and attention is on what I need to do to be at my best this week for my teammates. Hopefully, we go out there and play our best game.” DAVID GINSBURG (AP)

Reliving a Classic Playoff Game Giants-49ers contest rekindles memories from top NFL rivalry

C[cehWXb[ =Wc[i The Niners got the better of the Giants, 38-24, after the 1981 season in the first playoff game of the Bill Walsh era, one week before Dwight Clark made “The Catch.”

'/.'

Fhe <eejXWbb Erik Howard’s memories of the play remain vivid more than two decades later. The former Giant will never forget fighting through blockers to knock the ball out of Roger Craig’s hands, forcing the fumble that helped lead New York to its second Super Bowl title and ended the San Francisco 49ers’ quest for a thirdstraight championship.

The playoff run to San Francisco’s second title after the 1984 season also started with a win over the Giants, 21-10.

'/.+

The Giants eliminated the 49ers in the wild-card round with a 17-3 win after the 1985 season and then launched their own Super Bowl run with a division-round win over San Francisco the next year.

'/.,

“The thing I remember the most was the silence was deafening in the crowd,” Howard said. “The Super Bowl was in their grasp. Then to all of a sudden have a turnover at that stage of the game and it’s over.” That play from the NFC Championship game on Jan. 20, 1991, is among the most famous between the teams and is one of many being recalled leading into Sunday’s conference title game. But it is far from the only postseason moment the teams share. The Giants and 49ers met six times in the playoffs between the 1981 and ’94 seasons, with the victor going on to win the Super Bowl in four of those cases.

Giants QB Jeff Hostetler avoids a sack against the 49ers in the 1991 NFC title game.

The rivalry featured Hall of Fame players such as Joe Montana, Jerry Rice and Ronnie Lott for San Francisco, and Lawrence Taylor and Harry Carson for the Giants. There were great plays and memorable moments through the years, but the most famous came in the only previous conference championship game between these teams. San Francisco led 13-9 early in the fourth quarter before Leonard Marshall knocked out Montana with a crushing hit from behind. Gary Rea-

sons then had a 30-yard run on a fake punt to set up Matt Bahr’s fourth field goal to make it 13-12. The 49ers just needed to run out the clock to seal the win. But on a first-and-10 from the Giants’ 40 with less than three minutes to go, Craig ran up the middle, and Howard shed his blockers and got his helmet on the ball. It popped loose and Taylor recovered at the New York 43 with 2:36 to go. Seven plays later, Bahr kicked a 43-yard field goal as time expired, sending the Giants to a Super Bowl

The 49ers beat the Giants 44-3 after the 1993 season in what proved to be the final career game for Phil Simms and Lawrence Taylor.

'//*

In January 2003 — the only postseason since their stretch of earlier matchups — the 49ers fell behind the Giants 38-14 late in the third quarter. But Jeff Garcia and Terrell Owens led San Francisco on an epic comeback for a 39-38 win.

they won 20-19 over Buffalo. Lott and Craig also left after that season and by the time the 49ers won their fifth Super Bowl title following the 1994 season, it was a very different roster. “It was kind of the end of that era to a certain degree,” former Niners offensive lineman Guy McIntyre said. Kiper: Redskins May Be Out of Luck in Picking a QB in the Draft J^[ H[Zia_di The NFL draft is still roughly three months away, but with the EastWest Shrine game taking place this week, and the Senior Bowl next week, and the NFL combine a month from now, the buzz has gotten under way. ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. released his first mock draft on

Wednesday, and on Thursday, hosted a conference call and offered his opinion on the early projections. The Redskins currently hold the sixth overall pick, and Kiper believes that the team will have a tough time getting a much-needed franchise quarterback at that pick. Stanford’s Andrew Luck is a shoo-in for the first pick, and Kiper believes Baylor quarterback Robert

Griffin III will go anywhere from second to fourth. Unless the Redskins are able to trade up to get Griffin before Cleveland (the next QB-needy team after Indianapolis), Kiper predicts that Mike Shanahan & co. would draft for need and take LSU’s Morris Claiborne. The 6-foot, 185-pound Claiborne last season recorded six interceptions

and 51 tackles for LSU and could help bolster a Redskins secondary that recorded only 10 interceptions. “There’s no other quarterback after [Griffin] to even consider in the early to mid-first round,” Kiper said. “Claiborne, to me, it’s a need area. It’s a kid that has a high grade. ... Other guys I was considering [for Washington], I feel, will be off the board.” (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Let’s Root, Root, Root for the Ravens There was a time not so long ago that Washingtonians of my age group openly cheered for the Baltimore Orioles. The Nationals were still the Expos, and there wasn’t much hope — or even a great desire among children of the ’80s — for a pro baseball team to come to D.C. While I’m glad to root for a true hometown team now, it may 8o CWjj be time to take a page Im[died out of the past with another sport. That’s right — Redskins fans ought to think long and hard about cheering for the Ravens. Not just on Sunday, when the Ravens face the Patriots in the AFC Championship, but in general.

?Êc dej ik]][ij_d] Wdoed[ fkbb W 9Wfj$ IY^[jj_de WdZ `kcf i^_f ed j^[ H[Zia_di$ I’m not suggesting anyone pull a Capt. Schettino and jump ship on the Redskins. But it could be healthy for Redskins fans to open their hearts to the team up Interstate 95. The teams are so different that should be easy. One is always playing in January; the other peaks in March. The Ravens have had only three coaches since their start in 1996; the Redskins have won three playoff games since 1993. Making it more convenient, the teams play in the regular season only once every four years. So there’s little conflicting interest. Loyalty, schmoyalty. Redskins fans deserve a winner — so let’s adopt the Ravens. To reach Matt Swenson, e-mail matt.swenson@readexpress.com

Maybe, just maybe, the Wizards are turning a corner. On the heels of an inspired fourth-quarter comeback effort that came up short against Houston on Monday, the Wizards notched their second win of the season Wednesday night, at the expense of the team that held the NBA’s best record, the Oklahoma City Thunder. With a game against the highoctane Denver Nuggets at Verizon Center Friday night, the Wizards have a simple task: Keep riding the momentum. “They’re a different challenge, a very good basketball team,” Wizards coach Flip Saunders said of the Nuggets. “They’re probably the best running team in the league. Their guards are very dynamic.

John Wall, left, celebrates during the Wizards’ win over the Thunder on Wednesday.

“We just have to try and carry over from Oklahoma City into the Denver game and not worry as much about what they’re doing but more what we’re doing.” Something Saunders might turn

to against the run-and-gun Nuggets (10-5) is a smaller, three-guard lineup featuring John Wall, Nick Young and Jordan Crawford. That trio proved highly effective against the Thunder when shar-

ing the floor, combining for 68 of Washington’s 105 points. Defensively, Young rose to the challenge to frustrate Kevin Durant at times, while the ball-handling capabilities of all three make for a cleaner offensive set. The Wizards committed just five turnovers in the second half, when the threesome was featured more heavily. “You’ve got three guys who can attack and create at the same

For that reason alone, he’s the team’s undisputed leader, even though he’s fallen short of the lofty expectations placed on him when he was a freshman. Mosley arrived as the secondleading scorer in Maryland high school history after starting for four years at Baltimore’s St. Frances Academy, where he was named 2008 Gatorade high school player of the year. But in College Park, despite occasional flourishes, he has drawn criticism for his passivity on

Sean Mosley has battled criticism about being too passive in his time at Maryland.

the offensive end of the court. He achieved his status as leader on the team somewhat by attrition: Everyone else was gone. And yet Mosley’s maturity and calm have proved an antidote for this year’s youthful and often reckless squad. “I have played with some great players here. Greivis [Vasquez],

Landon [Milbourne] and Eric Hayes all talked the entire practice, and I learned from them,” he said. “It’s carried over. Hopefully, the other guys can pick up some things from me to help us win.” Mosley’s clutch play late in the second halves of the Terrapins’ two ACC victories this season helped

Maryland (12-5, 2-2) fend off late runs by Wake Forest and Georgia Tech. In those games, Mosley was aggressive offensively, scoring 15 and 18 points, respectively. In Tuesday’s loss to Florida State, however, Mosley attempted only three shots from the field and finished with three points in a 14-point loss. Mosley will need to find consistency for the difficult stretch ahead. On Saturday, the Terrapins travel to face an erratic Temple team, which earlier this month upset then-No. 3 Duke and followed that with a 10-point loss to Dayton at home. Mosley knows it’s his team — inside the locker room and on the court — and welcomes the responsibility. “I’ve had great times here, and this last year, it’s going to be real special,” he said. Our styles editor builds a dream dressing room after moving to a house with — eeek! — no closets

The average size of a closet in a modern U.S. home? A healthy 6 feet by 8 feet, which just might be enough space for my admittedly large collection of shoes (gulp, maybe 100 pairs), new cocktail dresses and vintage coats, with at least a corner left over for my husband’s stuff.

But the Jazz Age builders of our 1921 rowhouse didn’t have a time machine to see what future buyers might like — or any inkling of what clotheshorses Americans in general, and I specifically, would become. Which explains why, though the Mount Pleasant abode we bought last spring came with many charms (a breezy porch, crown moldings, honeyed antique floors), it lacked any reasonable amount of closet space. As in, over 1,800 square feet and two floors, there were two measly, 3-foot-wide closets — perhaps enough rack room for a 12-year-old boy who wears the same snowboard shirt every day. Why did our new-old house have such puny closets, and why weren’t there more of them? Did the flappers and gangsters — or, more likely, Harding-era government drones — who had first lived here wear the same outfits every day? “People didn’t have as many clothes,” says Toronto fashion historian Jonathan Walford. “Most people stored what they had in trunks or armoires. Closets were just for hanging wool coats.”

Surely we’d missed a hall closet. By my not-very-scientific measuring (a Club Monaco scarf makes a great yardstick, BTW), I estimated we had room for an eighth of our stuff, which would mean dressing in nothing but black (me) or parting with a huge collection of baseball hats (my husband). Visions of sweaters heaped in the kitchen and piles of boots in the den went through my head. Does “Hoarders” have a “Buried by Fashion” edition? We went into “This Old House” land knowing storage might be a problem. “There are lots of closet challenges with older homes. Spaces can be small! You have to start thinking vertically, or outside the box,” says Alabama-based professional organizer Amanda Le Blanc, star of the Style Network’s new clutter-busting show, “The Amandas” (premieres Jan. 30 at 8 p.m.).

After debating ordering closet parts online and doing it all myself, I decided the oddness of the space (a radiator in one corner, a wonky, 1-foot-wide closet filled with HVAC pipes in another) meant I needed pros. I splurged on Arlington’s Eco-nize (Eco-nize.com), which, for a little less than $2,000, crafted me ashy-gray wooden shelving units with hanging bars, spots for shoes and bag cubbies. (To save money and DIY, try Easyclosets.com or John Louis Home, a wooden system sold on Amazon.com). Eco-nize measured the room (and counted my shoes!), then came back a few weeks later to noisily install the “closet.” The resulting dressing room’s new shelves soared close to the 10-foot ceiling, giving me enough storage to finally start unpacking. At Le Blanc’s urging, I organized everything — bars of skirts, shelves of pumps — by color. “That helps you know what you’ve got, and can mean you’ll purge more and shop less,” she said.

So I decided that, since I didn’t really have a closet, I’d build one. Project Dressing Room began. Like many 75-plus-yearold houses in D.C., our pad has what I call Uncle Fester’s Room, a weeny, rather useless space fit only for a tiny kid or a weird relative. Ours, just across from the master bedroom, measures 8 by 10 — enough for all my clothes and then some. At first, I envisioned filling the room floor to ceiling with hanging bars. But that would have blocked off the little rectangle’s door and window, making it more prison cell than chick cave. “You want it to be like a little department store,” said Anna Kahoe, coowner of GoodWood (1428 U St. NW; 202986-3640), who turned the basement of her last house into a glam space of clothing racks and mirrors. “It’ll prolong the joy you get from shopping and help you see more of your clothes.”

IkZZ[dbo" j^[h[ mWi X_d#\h[[" c[ii#\h[[ p[d m^[h[ j^[h[ ^WZ X[[d Y^Wei$ Sure enough, I found I had 27 black blazers, enough to outfit the Rolling Stones for several reunion tours. A few got dropped off at Goodwill (sorry, Mick!). Jewelry went into neat, velvet-lined drawers; my tights and flats got neatly organized into hanging bags on the back of the room’s doors. And suddenly, there was bin-free, mess-free zen where there had been chaos, and storage where there had been none. Adding personality to the room — framed fashion illustrations from a Paris flea market on the walls, a sparkly Pottery Barn chandelier on the ceiling, old timey glass pulls on the drawers — made me almost as happy as getting organized. A vintage vanity table from Craigslist and a big Ikea mirror meant I could blow dry my hair and put on my makeup in the room, pretending to be some movie star. “It ends up being about relishing your feminine side,” says Kahoe. “You’ll buy fewer items of clothing, but see it more and keep it in better shape.” And who knows — seeing all my stuff on display might even inspire me to shop less. Which I’m sure will help my husband stop resenting his crummy, tiny closet. JENNIFER BARGER (E XPRESS)

“Red Tails,” out Friday, proves what writing can do. It can take a great story — in this case, the Tuskegee Airmen’s — and turn it into a horrible script. The first 30 seconds of this film has the worst dialogue I’ve heard in recent cinema, and that includes the “Twilight” films. Writers John Ridley and Aaron McGruder (the latter is the brilliant mind behind “The Boondocks,” which makes the whole thing 8o Ah_ij[d more confusing) take FW][#A_hXo men who were heroes in Europe and second-class citizens at home and put lines in their mouths that wouldn’t sound out of place in an elementary school play. (You know, like when Soldier No. 1 points to the distance and says, “But look! General Washington approaches!” or when Apple No. 3 says, “I also contain fiber!”) An example: When escorting a squadron of bombers, the Airmen elect not to chase down German fighters, as their white predecessors had. Seeing this, one of the bomber pilots says, “They gave up glory to save our asses!” Yes, writers. We can see that. On the screen. Where a movie is playing. A movie that just showed what you said. The special effects are breathtaking, but zooming planes and booming guns can’t counteract the clunky writing. The story of the Tuskegee Airmen is one of the best to come out of WWII, and the men who lived to tell their tale don’t deserve to have it told like this. Real-life mixed martial arts champion Gina Carano turns in a competent performance as steely super-solider Mallory Kane in the action-packed “Haywire.”

It’s debatable whether Lisbeth, Maggie and Mallory qualify as feminist standard-bearers — each defines herself chiefly by men, either as tormentors or champions — but there’s no doubt

that watching Carano outkick, outpunch and outsmart a roster of buff actors delivers a certain compensatory frisson. One of the reasons “Haywire” is such a pleasure to watch is that its director, Steven Soderbergh, doesn’t overplay the film’s hearme-roar subversions. Temperamentally, he’s an understater, and he approaches his first foray into pure action with the same evenhanded cool he lends to every genre he’s ever tackled. “Haywire” possesses a lean, unfussy style, from the blown-out lighting to fight sequences that Soderbergh stages with a minimum of unnecessary flourish or fanfare. Mallory’s encounters unfold, not in a series of cool, whiplash edits set to awesome techno music, but simply as images, often with no music or dialogue. Just why is she fighting? That

isn’t immediately clear, certainly not in “Haywire’s” pulverizing opening sequence that begins with Mallory’s taking a pot of boiling water to the face and ending with her slamming a guy’s head into a diner stool. It emerges that Mallory, a former Marine, has something to do with a Blackwater-esque private contractor and a black ops mission gone wonky; as the tale spins out it will take her from Barcelona and San Diego and Dublin to upstate New York, New Mexico and Majorca, kicking the backsides of characters who may or may not include those played by Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Antonio Banderas and Michael Douglas. Carano’s not a great actress, but she doesn’t need to be in a movie that doesn’t get bogged down in psychology or back stories. Instead, “Haywire” simply gives audiences what they came to see: bruising fight sequences set up and executed with economy, skill and one or two genuine jaw-dropping jolts. The sentiments found in ‘Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close’ ultimately ring false There’s such a line between precocious and insufferable, and it’s a line continually crossed by “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” Stephen Daldry’s extremely labored and incredibly crass adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel. The story of how a young boy processes the trauma of his father’s death on Sept. 11, 2001, “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” brazenly mines the imagery of that day to create a morbid pastiche of iconographic symbols, from the recurring motif of a man falling from the World Trade Center to a blizzard of papers that blew through bluebird skies. Juxtaposing those ghastly images with a precious, overworked aesthetic of camera-ready eccentricity, Daldry hijacks 9/11 for this own aestheticized agenda: to invest an

he lost his father, Thomas (Tom Hanks), on what he calls The Worst Day and how a key he left behind somehow figures into an imaginary game they used to play, having to do with Reconnaissance Expeditions in order to find New York’s Lost Sixth Borough.

<_bc H[l_[m Braving German guns on one wing and American racism on the other, the Tuskegee Airmen proved themselves some of the best combat pilots of World War II. The African-American fliers’ great achievement merits a great movie. “Red Tails” isn’t it. The complexions of its heroes aside, this George Lucas-produced dogfight epic could have been made during the same decade the airmen helped beat Hitler. The warmovie cliches are as abundant as the antiaircraft fire, and the dialogue as wooden as a balsa glider. The leading characters are issued one personality trait each, and some don’t even get that. Cuba Gooding

The capitals are added, but they convey the sense of Italicized, Underlined Emphasis that pervades “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” which tracks Oskar on an odyssey through New York as he meets random people, tells them about his loss and thereby spins an invisible web of transcendence everywhere he roams. That Oskar comes across as pushy and entitled shouldn’t be blamed on Thomas Horn, the newcomer Daldry plucked from “Jeopardy!” to play him. Rather, the fault clearly lies with Daldry, who lays the sentiment and studied idiosyncracies on thick. Nowhere is his profligate hand more evident than in the film’s final image, a wish-fulfillment fantasy as cheap as it is cynical.

Assisted by a year’s worth of postproduction, director Anthony Hemingway stages several pulseboosting aerial battles. While Simin, Nader and Termeh confront (or avoid) the simmering anxieties of their family life, Razieh straddles her two worlds of cultural differences and conflicting motivations that unexpectedly explode after an encounter between Nader and Razieh. <_bc H[l_[m It’s easy to throw around adjectives such as “taut” and “superbly crafted” and “riveting” when reviewing movies, but the Iranian film “A Separation” truly earns those praises, and more. As the latest example of Iranian realism at its most gripping, Asghar Farhadi’s domestic drama takes hold from its first moments and doesn’t let go, even long after the lights have come on. As “A Separation” opens, Nader (Peyman Moadi) and Simin (Leila Hatami) address the camera as a judge is adjudicating their pending divorce. Simin is seeking a divorce from Nader, who has refused to move out of Iran with her and their 11-year-old daughter, Termeh (the filmmaker’s daughter, Sarina). Nader wants to stay home to take care of his elderly father, who’s suffering from Alzheimer’s. When Simin’s request for a divorce is refused and she leaves the house to stay with her parents, Nader hires a nurse named Razieh (Sareh Bayat) to look after

On the surface, “The Adventures of Tintin” is unimpeachable, but the surface is where it stays. A .H. ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS: CHIPWRECKED (G, 87 minutes) Either you’re eagerly anticipating “Chipwrecked,” the third installment in the lucrative “Alvin and the Chipmunks” series, or you’ve opted to avoid these films like the plague. prank gets his fuzzy mates — and their adorable female counterparts, the Chipettes — tied up in a parasail that carries them off the starboard side of a cruise ship and onto a tropical island. The “Chipmunks” have a very loyal audience, and “Chipwrecked” serves up more of the derivative chaos that floats this franchise’s boat. SE AN O’CONNELL THE ARTIST (PG-13, 100 minutes) Capping off a year of movies dedicated to high-style nostalgia, “The Artist” arrives like the last, lightest profiterole on the croquembouche. “The Artist” opens in 1927, when the dapper Errol Flynn-esque film star George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) rules Hollywoodland as its reigning star, his million-dollar grin coming as

easily as the waves of applause that predictably greet every one of his new pictures. When George crosses paths with an eager newcomer named Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo), he’s cast in the role of mentor (and maybe more); but when talking pictures become the order of the day, she quickly begins an ascent up stardom’s ladder, while George’s fortunes begin their inevitable slide. A.H. CONTRABAND (R, 109 minutes) Directed by actor-director Baltasar Kormakur, the film has a gloomy, propulsive, workingclass energy that feels slightly more European than Hollywood-y. When we first meet Chris Farraday (Mark Wahlberg), he has left the smuggling game to raise a family and build a legitimate business in suburban New Orleans. But when his wife’s younger brother, Andy, winds up in hock to a volatile drug dealer (Giovanni Ribisi), Chris is forced to take up his old ways to pay off the debt and to keep Andy from

being shot in the head. Playing against type, Ribisi makes for a compelling, and frighteningly unhinged, villain. Briggs also threatens Chris’ wife and his two young sons, unless Chris comes up with the money. A quick plan is thrown together to hop down to Panama on the next freighter and come back with a pile of counterfeit currency. But the plan spins rapidly, and bloodily, out of control. That said, “Contraband” delivers certain rewards, both expected and unexpected. M .O. THE DESCENDANTS (R, 115 minutes) George Clooney doesn’t put a foot wrong except on purpose in “The Descendants,” a pitch-perfect movie that threads a tiny needle between comedy and devastating drama. Clooney’s Matt King is the wealthy descendant of Hawaiian royalty, who, as the movie opens, is watching his wife, Elizabeth, lie comatose in a hospital bed after suffering a near-fatal boating accident. Matt must find a way to bond with his daughters, 10-year-old Scottie (Amara Miller) and 17-year-old Alex (Shailene Woodley). “The Descendants” is an ode to emotional dissonance, wherein regret and antic humor can coexist and even share a drink; it’s a tricky tonal high-wire act that writer-director Alexander Payne pulls off with uncommon skill and aplomb. A.H. THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (R, 158 minutes) Rooney Mara’s portrayal of punked-out cyber-genius Lisbeth Salander does much to advance the appeal of this spiky heroine, whose victimization at the hands of piggish men and her subsequent avenging fury have made her a feminist avatar for the WikiLeaks era. Handsomely filmed and impeccably acted, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” is at once satisfying and underwhelming, a pristine, coolly atmospheric procedural thriller that comes to the party a tad overdressed in hype. The movie’s most unsettling scenes, a brutal rape and an equally torturous act of revenge, are staged by Fincher for maximum shock value. But for the most part, he plays down his stylistic signatures, allowing the performances to project the story’s most subtle meanings. A.H. JOYFUL NOISE (PG-13, 118 minutes) Times are tough for the citizens of Pacashau, Ga., and not just because the recession has shuttered most of the town’s businesses. The director of the Divinity Church Choir has died, making the group’s chances for top prize at the National Joyful Noise Competition look bleak. To

The movie revolves around keeping the faith through obstacle after obstacle, but the dramedy’s ultimate feel-good nature proves infectious, even for those of us whose weekend routine doesn’t include a trip to church. creaky age of 50, he still manages to do his own stunts, look studly in a suit and maintain perfect hair sweepage. “Ghost Protocol” possesses the requisite number of expertly choreographed “How’d they do that?” scenes, as well as some terrific supporting performances from “Mission: Impossible” veterans and newcomers. Rather than strain so mightily to remind viewers of his still-rock-hard abs and bluesteel stare, Cruise is more than entitled to remind us that he can actually act. Especially when he convincingly plays Ethan convincingly playing a Russian general and then engages a Kremlin guard in some absurdly clever misdirection. That piece of visual legerdemain, as well as Ethan’s quarry — Russian nuclear launch codes — are about as retro as it gets. A.H. IN THE LAND OF BLOOD AND HONEY (R, 127 minutes) Angelina Jolie makes an impressive writing and directing debut with this ambitious if not entirely fully realized drama about the 1990s war in the former Yugoslavia. Jolie’s earnest depiction of Serbian atrocities against Bosnian Muslims feels like equal parts rebuke and cautionary cri de coeur. Guiding viewers through a confusing jumble of tribal animosities, are a Bosnian artist and a reluctant Serbian soldier. At times, the story of the war and the fictional romance bump up against each other awkwardly, leaving viewers unsure of precisely what Jolie is trying to convey. The filmmaker’s aims are far less ambiguous when the film takes a turn for the schematic and,

finally, luridly melodramatic. But for all the story’s contrivances, Jolie still has managed to plunge filmgoers into the terror, heartbreak and confusion — literal and moral — of a war that remains unresolved. A.H. THE IRON LADY (PG-13, 105 minutes) Meryl Streep disappears so uncannily into former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher that her performance overpowers the movie. Filmgoers who come to see Streep in action will see only that: an actress at the top of her game, delivering a bravura performance — not a thoughtful, provocative portrait of one of the most consequential figures of the 20th century. Framed as a sequence of flashbacks Thatcher reflects on in late retirement, the result may be a more vulnerable, sympathetic portrait than the title suggests, but it also forces the filmmakers to leave far more vital aspects of her life and career on the cutting room floor. “The Iron Lady” is a curious piece of work, leaving viewers with the sense that its subject has been both lionized and punished, but in neither case fully or fairly understood. A.H. SHERLOCK HOLMES: A GAME OF SHADOWS (PG-13, 129 minutes) Victoriana buffs will not be amused by this film, but it’s a modest improvement on bad-boy

director Guy Ritchie’s first tweaking of Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective. Not because it’s more subtle: This sequel is just as profligate as its 2009 predecessor, with explosions, anachronisms and quick cuts. But the dialogue is a little sharper, and Holmes gets a worthy opponent in Professor Moriarty, a diabolical mastermind who has begun a series of bombings and assassinations, hoping to spark a “world war.” Robert Downey Jr. plays Holmes as brainy yet highly physical and keen on dressing up. Jude Law returns as Dr. Watson, Holmes’ sidekick. Holmes’ latest case nearly scrubs Watson’s wedding and ends the new couple’s honeymoon before it even begins. Holmes, the filmmakers wink, can’t bear to let Watson go. MARK JENKINS

TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY (R, 130 minutes) “Trust no one, Jim,” the British spy chief known as Control says as the film opens. “Especially no one in the mainstream.” With those tantalizing words of advice — delivered by John Hurt — the game is deliciously afoot in Tomas Alfredson’s long-awaited adaptation of John le Carre’s Cold War-era spy novel. Jim Prideaux and his boss, Control, are both working for the British intelligence service, MI6, in 1973 as the film opens, when the Cold War is at its height and Control is certain that MI6 has been infiltrated by a mole. Control sends Jim to Hungary, where the events that transpire will have inevitable reverberations back in London, where veterans engage in

WAR HORSE (PG-13, 146 minutes) Man’s inhumanity to man is examined through a boy’s mystical connection to a horse in “War Horse,” Steven Spielberg’s stirring, expertly manipulative adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s 1982 novel (which has already been adapted for a hit Broadway play). The plucky steed is named Joey, a playful thoroughbred colt admired from a distance by an English farm boy named Albert (Jeremy Irvine). When Albert’s father, Ted (Peter Mullan), unexpectedly buys Joey in a drunken impulse, the boy is overjoyed, training the horse to respond to his slightest whistle. When Ted’s landlord, Lyons (David Thewlis), demands funds he’s due, it looks as if the family will have to sell Joey — until Albert persuades him to plow an entire rocky field, to the amazement of the onlookers who gather to witness the feat. But Joey’s fate is far from secure: When World War I dawns, Ted does sell the horse, this time to the British forces. A.H. WE BOUGHT A ZOO (PG, 124 minutes) In “We Bought a Zoo,” Matt Damon plays Benjamin Mee, a widower who’s been alone with his kids for six months when he decides to upend their lives and buy a broken-down zoo in Southern California. Based on the real-life Mee’s actual memoir, “We Bought a Zoo” contains all the ingredients of a maudlin, treacly weeper (“Dozens of Marleys and Three Mees”). Happily, writer-director Cameron Crowe keeps the most mawk-

ish manipulations to a minimum in a movie that moves through its requisite stages — grief, acceptance, zany sight gags and healing — with smooth, entertaining efficiency. The title, by the way, is spoken twice by Mee’s 7-year-old daughter, Rosie, played by the beguiling Maggie Elizabeth Jones, whose scene-stealing cuteness proves to be one of the most likable things in a

movie that’s all about being liked. A.H YOUNG ADULT (R, 94 minutes) Mavis Gary, played with perfect pitch by Charlize Theron, is a 37-year-old divorced writer facing the cancellation of her popular series of young adult novels. Lonely and depressed, Mavis shuffles around her apartment in sweatpants, swilling booze, eating fast food, watching bad TV and having meaningless

sex, all the while making insensitive comments about other people. The actress wholeheartedly embraces Mavis’ dark — and, let’s face it, somewhat guylike — side with gusto. It’s a performance that’s as hard to look away from as it is to watch, especially when Mavis decides to return to the Podunk where she grew up in order to brazenly seduce Buddy (Patrick Wilson), the guy

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Certain tasks may be more difficult than usual today. Focus on those duties which are most familiar. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You will likely be meeting up with someone who has played an important role in the past — but you may be unaware of his or her significance. ARIES (March 21-April 19) What happens in an unusual way is worthy of some serious examination today. You don’t want to take anything new for granted. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You may think that things are going to transpire as expected, but an afternoon twist may have you thinking that anything is possible. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Attention is paid to you today, but you may not know just what you have done to deserve it. Ask around.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) What is most common to you will be most useful. You’re in no mood to get used to something new or to learn a new technique. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) What begins quickly is likely to end slowly, mostly because you will realize that it is worth enjoying to the fullest. You have the power!

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
