A social club in New South Wales, Australia, has learned that if you say you’ll cut a sandwich in half, you’d better be precise. A patron at Corowa RSL returned a cheese roll complaining it wasn’t cut in half as promised, but that one side was bigger, news.com.au reports. Staff decided to measure and posted a picture online showing that one side was, in fact, a centimeter wider. It wasn’t clear how the customer was compensated. (EXPRESS)
Russian police had an unexpected encounter while searching a house in St. Petersburg — a crocodile in the basement. The incident happened Thursday while detectives were looking for undeclared weapons in the house of a man involved in staging reconstructions of historic military battles, fontanka.ru reports. When they went down, they saw a croc in a small pool dug into the concrete floor. The man said he’d had the croc for years. (AP)
Police in Belfast, Maine, say a man punched himself in the face three times to avoid a sobriety test. Brian Fogg, 27, was found in his car, stuck in a ditch last week, WGME-TV reports. Police say when they tried to test his blood-alcohol level, Fogg punched himself in the face, causing himself to bleed. Police tended to his injuries instead of testing him, but later charged him with operating under the influence and other offenses. (AP)

MONTGOMERY COUNTY The fate of a 100-year-old bridge that served as a lifeline for Washington-area African-Americans during segregation remains in limbo a year after Montgomery County leaders asked that it be preserved when it’s removed for construction of the Purple Line. State and county project officials say the historic Talbot Avenue bridge’s steel girders, which support it and form short walls on the sides, will be saved. However, they haven’t decided whether to incorporate them into artwork at a Purple Line station or place them along an adjacent recreational trail, as some residents have proposed. Just as important, they haven’t determined who will pay to move and install them. Longtime residents of Lyttonsville, a community northwest of downtown Silver Spring founded in 1853 by a free black laborer, have been fighting to save the
decaying bridge for several years. It’s scheduled to be removed in mid-2019 to make way for a wider rail corridor. Residents say the one-lane wood bridge spanning the CSX freight rail tracks is central to the community’s history as an African-American enclave during segregation. Some recall their grandmothers crossing it to reach nearby white neighborhoods where they were allowed to clean homes but not live. Many used the bridge to reach buses that would take them to schools, jobs, restaurants and movie theaters in the District. “It’s a symbol of unity and a symbol of courage and conviction,” said Patricia Tyson, 75, a nearly lifelong Lyttonsville resident whose grandparents moved there in 1920. “At one time, it was the only way into and out of the community. … It was a gateway to life. It helped us do what we wanted to do.” Construction on the 16-mile light-rail line between Montgomery and Prince George’s counties started in August, but the design is still being finalized. The line is

scheduled to open to passengers in spring 2022. Officials at the Maryland Transit Administration say they tentatively approved two artwork proposals for the Lyttonsville station as part of the Purple Line’s $6 million art budget. One of the designs, by Maryland artist David Hess, shows one of the girders cut into two pieces
and attached to the sides of the elevator shaft. The other girder would lie on the ground as a short wall between the station and the adjacent Capital Crescent Trail. Some longtime residents say the design loses the feeling of a bridge, and state officials said they had not made a final decision. KATHERINE SHAVER (THE WASHINGTON POST)
WARM WEATHER
Saturday’s sun was a glimpse of springtime It was warm on Saturday. On far-off April 5, when baseball season begins at Nationals Park, it normally gets no warmer in Washington than 63 degrees. Yet on Saturday, the 63-degree high reading at Reagan National Airport was the second-warmest of the month (it was 64 on Jan. 12). National Weather Service records show that 63 does not become the normal high here until April 4. The mild air will stick around through Tuesday, before a cold front puts a temporary end to the warmer weather by Wednesday. (TWP)

Federal workers in the region feel the brunt of government closure THE DISTRICT As the shutdown threatened to stretch into its first workweek, politicians pointed fingers and people across the country rolled their eyes at yet another example of government gridlock. But for the D.C. region, which boasts the largest concentration of federal employees and contractors in the country, the shutdown could have serious consequences. “If you viewed this as a company town, it’s like the factory shut down and we don’t know when it’s gonna reopen,” Rep. Gerald E. Connolly, D-Va., said.
Up to a quarter of the region’s 3.2 million-person workforce could be affected by the shutdown, according to Stephen S. Fuller, an economist at George Mason University, noting that 367,000 federal employees and 450,000 federal contractors live in the area. “It’s hard to point to an economy in the country where one company represents between 25 and 30 percent of local GDP,” Fuller said. Connolly cited statistics showing the region could lose an estimated $200 million per day in economic productivity, including small businesses catering to government employees. “You know if you were running a lunch shop near the IRS and 80 percent of the IRS workforce is

Vice President Pence met Sunday with Jordan’s King Abdullah II, right, to discuss a range of Middle East concerns.
Pence visits Jordan on Mideast peace mission Abdullah implores U.S. to ‘rebuild trust’ after its Jerusalem decision AMMAN, JORDAN Jordan’s king appealed Sunday to Vice President Mike Pence to “rebuild trust and confidence” in the possibility of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, following fallout from the Trump administration’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Pence tried to reassure the monarch that the U.S. was committed to restarting peace efforts and to a two-state solution, if both sides agree. Such a caveat deviates from long-standing U.S. support for that approach as the only possible outcome of a peace deal.
Trump’s announcement on Jerusalem last month infuriated the Palestinians, who seek the Israeli-annexed eastern sector of the city as a future capital. They accused the U.S. of siding with Israel and said Washington can no longer serve as a mediator. It also posed a dilemma for King Abdullah II, a staunch U.S. ally who derives his political legitimacy in large part from the Hashemite dynasty’s role as guardian of a key Muslim site in Jerusalem. Any perceived threat to Muslim claims in the city is seen as a challenge to Jordan, where a large segment of the population is of Palestinian origin. Pence told the king that the U.S. has committed “to continue to respect Jordan’s role as the custodian of holy sites, that we

take no position on boundaries and final status.” It was a message Pence also relayed Saturday in talks with Egypt’s president. Later, after meeting U.S. troops near the Syrian border, Pence said he and Abdullah had “a very frank discussion.” “Look, friends occasionally have disagreements and we agreed to disagree on the decision by the United States to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. But what we agreed on was the need for all parties to come back to the table,” Pence said. Another cause of concern for Jordan is Trump’s decision to move the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Jordan opposes such a move if taken ahead of an Israeli-Palestinian partition deal. KEN THOMAS (AP)
Delta Air Lines will soon require owners of service and support animals to provide more information before their animal can fly in the passenger cabin, including an assurance that it’s trained to behave. The airline says complaints about animals biting or urinating or defecating on planes have nearly doubled since 2016. Starting March 1, Delta will require owners to show proof of their animal’s health or vaccinations at least 48 hours before a flight. Owners of psychiatric service animals and of those used for emotional support will need to sign a statement vouching that their animal can behave, but won’t have to show their dog graduated from obedience school. A rough start to Year 2 Anniversary of President Trump’s inauguration marred by government shutdown Both parties point fingers over shutdown
CHIP SOMODEVILLA (GETTY IMAGES)
POLITICS The sequel to President Trump’s first year in office is opening with the lead player hamstrung by a government shutdown and hunkering down amid investigations, crises and political unease. After 365 days in the Oval Office, Trump has found that his drive to deliver quickly on campaign promises has yielded to the sobering reality of governing — and the prospect of an electoral rebuke in November. Administration aides, outside allies and Republicans on Capitol Hill see the Trump White House continuing to face many of the same challenges it wrestled with last year, with fresh plot twists to boot. Special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election keeps moving ever closer to the Oval Office. The government shutdown highlights the legislative challenges that persist even with Republicans controlling the White House and both the House and Senate. And the fall elections are shaping up as a referendum on Trump’s tenure. “In the second year, you no longer are one-dimensional,” said Ari Fleischer, press secretary when George W. Bush was president. “There’s an inevitable pivot that every administration makes, and that is to recognize that it’s no longer about future events and promises, it’s now about defending and promoting last year’s accomplishments.” Republicans outside the White House are now hoping the Trump administration will be more politically savvy. But the 71-year old president has proved set in his ways, trusting his instincts over the advice of his aides. What comes next? Personnel changes are afoot to streamline the West Wing
President Trump’s approval rating is at a historic low for a first-year president despite a booming economy.
political and legislative affairs teams in preparation for the November elections, and Trump and Vice President Pence are preparing aggressive campaign and fundraising schedules. Despite a booming economy, Trump’s approval rating is at a historic low for a first-year president, weighed down by partisan controversy and his own divisive actions and statements. The fall contests represent a make-orbreak moment for Trump and could influence his pursuit of a second term, an effort that will begin in earnest next year. GOP lawmakers frame the importance of keeping control of the House and Senate in self-serving terms for Trump: Democratic control would grant subpoena power to the president’s fiercest critics. Wary of potentially losing the Senate, the White House plans to continue its aggressive push to appoint conservative judges before Congress breaks
A race to end shutdown Centrist senators racing to strike a deal to end the government shutdown expressed optimism Sunday afternoon that they were close to an agreement — but it was unclear whether they would be able to secure the support of leadership to end the impasse. A bipartisan group of moderate senators huddled in hopes of reaching an accord on immigration and federal spending they hoped would pave the way to reopening the government. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said he would bring up a proposal to fund the government through Feb. 8 at 1 a.m. this morning, or sooner. (THE WASHINGTON POST)
for campaign season. For all the legislative ambition of the first year, Trump’s second stands to be a more muted affair. Immigration, the sticking point in the current shutdown,
U.S. troops able to watch NFL playoff games on American Forces Network, deemed “essential”
stands as the most promising option after the president provoked a crisis by setting up the March 5 expiration of protections for roughly 700,000 young immigrants brought illegally to the U.S. as children. He’s hoping to use it as leverage to pass his hard-line immigration priorities. Before the State of the Union address Jan. 30, the White House has been preparing much-delayed policy proposals on infrastructure and welfare, but little progress is anticipated as lawmakers have begun turning their focus to their own re-elections. White House officials said Trump is looking forward to spending much of the year promoting his achievements on judicial nominations, deregulation and passage of the tax overhaul. “If year one is about tallying campaign promises,” said White House spokesman Hogan Gidley, “in year two, we can talk about results.” ZEKE MILLER (AP)
POLITICS Senate moderates expressed hopes Sunday of finding a way to end the government shutdown despite both parties spending most of the weekend engaged in furious finger-pointing. Democrats, who initially dug in on a demand for legislation to protect about 700,000 “Dreamer” immigrants who were brought illegally to the U.S. as children, shifted their messaging to blame the shutdown on the incompetence of President Trump and Republican leadership. Republicans argued that Democrats shuttered the government over “illegal immigration” in a bid to gin up enthusiasm among their base. On Sunday morning, Trump took to Twitter to call on the GOP-controlled Senate to consider deploying the “nuclear option” — changing Senate rules to end the filibuster — and reopen the government with a simple majority. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., dismissed that option. Democrats view Trump as an infuriating negotiator, pointing chiefly to his failed eleventh-hour talks with Chuck Schumer, the Senate’s top Democrat. The New York Democrat says Trump expressed support Friday for a fix for the “Dreamers” in return for financing for Trump’s wall along the U.S.-Mexico border — only to back off hours later. The White House says they never came to terms. KEVIN FREKING, ANDREW TAYLOR AND ALAN FRAM (AP)

AFRIN, SYRIA Turkish troops and Syrian opposition forces attacked a Kurdish enclave in northern Syria on Sunday in their bid to oust from the area a U.S.-allied Kurdish militia, which responded with a hail of rockets on Turkish towns that killed at least one refugee. The Turkish offensive on Afrin, code-named Operation Olive Branch, started Saturday and has heightened tensions in the already complicated Syrian conflict, threatening to further strain ties between NATO allies Turkey and the United States.
On Sunday, the United States urged Turkey to exercise restraint and ensure that the offensive is “limited in scope and duration.” A State Department statement also asked Turkey to be “scrupulous to avoid civilian casualties,” adding that all parties involved in Syria should focus on defeating the Islamic State group. The Syrian government, Iran and Egypt condemned the attack, which activists said killed at least 18 civilians in the Kurdish-held enclave in the first 24 hours. Turkish officials say 11 rockets launched from Syria have landed in Turkish towns along the border, killing at least one Syrian refugee and injuring 47. France called for an emergency U.N. troops entered Afrin a day after dozens of Turkish jets and artillery units at the border pounded Syrian Kurdish targets. A spokesman for the Kurdish fighters said the attack was repelled. Turkey considers the Syrian Kurdish militia, known as the People’s Protection Units, or YPG, a terrorist group because of its affiliation with Kurdish rebels fighting in Turkey. The group controls Afrin, in Syria’s northwestern Aleppo province, as well as nearly 25 percent of Syrian territory, to the east along Turkey’s border. The YPG also forms the backbone of the Syrian Democratic Forces, the main U.S. ally against ISIS in Syria.

Patrick Meehan, R-Pa., used taxpayer money to settle a complaint that stemmed from his hostility toward a former aide who rejected his romantic overtures. The story cited unnamed people who said the representative used thousands of dollars from his congressional office fund to settle the sexual harassment complaint the ex-aide filed last summer. (AP)

Pope ends contentious trip to Latin America
KABUL, AFGHANISTAN | Men try to escape from a balcony of the Intercontinental Hotel on Sunday after an attack in the Afghan capital. Gunmen stormed the hotel and set off a 13-hour gunbattle with security forces that began Saturday night and left at least 18 dead, including 14 foreigners. Security forces said Sunday they had killed the last of six Taliban militants involved in the siege. More than 150 people were rescued or managed to escape.
California highway swamped by deadly mudslides reopens after nearly two-week closure
Police said more than 1 million people gathered for Pope Francis’ final Mass in Peru as he concluded a trip to Latin America. In his final appearance, Francis denounced the plague of corruption sweeping through Latin America. But controversy over his accusations that Chilean sex abuse victims slandered a bishop continued to cast a shadow over what has become the most contested trip of his papacy. (AP)

AFC CHAMPIONSHIP | PATRIOTS 24, JAGUARS 20
Patched-up Pats prevail
Brady makes 8th Super Bowl with Belichick despite hand injury, loss of Gronkowski NFL PLAYOFFS Playing with a cut on his throwing hand that spilled blood on the practice field at midweek? No problem. Facing the Jaguars’ fearsome defense? No matter. Trailing by 10 points in the fourth quarter without Rob Gronkowski and needing to overcome the big-game curse of Tom Coughlin? No big deal. Tom Brady put all of that aside Sunday. The quarterback threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes to Danny Amendola as the Patriots rallied for a 24-20 win in the AFC championship game at Gillette Stadium. With the victory, New England advanced to its eighth Super Bowl with Brady and coach Bill Belichick. The Patriots will go for a sixth
title on Feb. 4 in Minneapolis. On Sunday, New England trailed 14-3 in the second quarter, when Jaguars QB Blake Bortles threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Marcedes Lewis and powerful rookie Leonard Fournette ran in a 4-yard score. Brady seemed less bothered by his hand injury than by the Jaguars, who ranked second in the NFL in total defense this season. He finished with 290 yards on 26-of-38 passing. The Patriots pulled to within 1410 in the final minute of the first half with a 1-yard scoring run from James White. But by then the Patriots had lost Gronkowski, the hulking tight end who is a matchup nightmare to most defenses, because of a concussion

suffered on an illegal hit from safety Barry Church. The Jaguars extended their lead to 20-10 with two Josh Lambo field goals — including a 54-yarder in the third quarter. Brady threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Amendola with just under nine minutes remaining, then found him again for a 4-yard score with 2:48 left. The Patriots held on from there, getting a pass breakup by cornerback Stephon Gilmore on a fourth-down pass by Bortles and then running out

the clock. Brady played without a glove on his injured throwing hand, but did have it wrapped and bandaged with black tape. He reportedly suffered a deep cut that required stitches during Wednesday’s practice. Coughlin, who beat the Patriots in two Super Bowls as coach of the Giants, rebuilt this Jaguars as the president of football operations. He spent Sunday in the press box, muttering under his breath and occasionally pounding a fist on a table. The Jaguars lost in an AFC title game for the third time in three appearances. The previous two defeats came when Coughlin was their coach in the late 1990s.
Coach Tyronn Lue said Sunday he won’t alter the Cavaliers’ rotation Tuesday at the Spurs despite losing 10 of the past 14 games. Three recent blowouts show how badly Cleveland is struggling. (EXPRESS)

GM of Olympic hockey team unexpectedly dies at 53
Indoor track is expected to grow biking community
The Titans hired Texans defensive coordinator Mike Vrabel as their new coach in a search that wrapped up Saturday, just five days after firing Mike Mularkey. Tennessee interviewed three candidates, including Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks and Rams offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur. Vrabel, 42, has spent 18 years in the NFL — 14 as a linebacker and four as an assistant coach. Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk said she could see the connection between Vrabel and general manager Jon Robinson. The GM started his career as a scout with New England, where Vrabel won three Super Bowls. (AP)
Jim Johannson, general manager of the U.S. Olympic men’s hockey team, died in his sleep Sunday morning at his home in Colorado Springs, Colo., according to USA Hockey. He was 53. Executive director Pat Kelleher said USA Hockey is “beyond shocked and profoundly saddened” by the loss of the Rochester, Minn., native. Johannson led the selection of the U.S. team for the PyeongChang Games. The U.S. faces Slovenia in its opener Feb. 14. Johannson played for the U.S. in the 1988 and 1992 Olympics. He began working for USA Hockey in 2000 and was promoted to executive director of hockey operations in 2007. (AP)
An indoor cycling track in Detroit is expected to draw riders from across the U.S. while giving inner-city youth the opportunity to participate for free in the fast-moving and growing sport. The Lexus Velodrome has its grand opening today. The inflatable, climate-controlled dome is a few miles north of the new arena that houses NBA and NHL games. It is one of only three indoor velodromes in America. Bicycling is growing in the Motor City. An organization that rents out bikes surpassed 100,000 rides in about five months last year. An anonymous donor gave $5 million for the velodrome project, designer and builder Dale Hughes said. (AP)

In a 148-124 loss, the Cavs tied a club record from 1972 for points allowed. Afterward, James said, “I really don’t know” if Lue could be fired.

Drag’s TV queen: How RuPaul built a reality empire What can I tell you about the new season of “RuPaul’s Drag Race: All Stars”? Well, first let me tell you what I can’t tell you. In order to screen the premiere, which airs at 8 p.m. Thursday on VH1, I had to promise I would not reveal the name of the mystery 10th contestant, the details of costume-making and runway challenges and the name of the drag queen
fated to “sashay away” — host RuPaul Charles’ refined way of saying, “You’re fired.” Those restrictions are a sign that “Drag Race” has come a long way from its humble beginnings on Logo in 2009, with what seemed like a halfbaked premise: “What would happen if we took a bunch of drag queens and turned them loose in a room full of feathers and glitter?” What happened is that the show became one of the most endearing reality shows of our
day. RuPaul’s blend of snarkiness and sweetness has earned him the Emmy for best reality show host two years in a row. And really, can anyone ever top his acceptance speech in 2016: “Earlier this year I was quoted saying I’d rather have an enema than have an Emmy. But thanks to the Television Academy, I can have both!” This third edition of “All Stars” features a bevy of past contestants. Trixie Mattel enters on skates in a get-up that makes Dolly Parton look demure. Shangela wears a giant bow in her giant wig and annoys the other queens to death by endlessly declaring, “Halleloo.” And BenDeLaCreme, a former “Drag Race” Miss Congeniality,” pledges: “I’m here to show that you can win with kindness and integrity rather than be a b----.” Good luck with that, BenDeLaCreme! Over the years, the show
has become slicker — check out the opening segment in which two past winners clad as nuns (only in red instead of black) stroll down what looks like a street in Italy. And the guest judges are super A-list (this season, Nancy Pelosi will make an appearance). The prize money has improved too: $100,000 for the winner, up from $20,000 in Season 1. What’s unchanged is the eager yearning among contestants to be outrageous. They are often mild and milquetoast-y in their stripped-down personas. Their transformation into overthe-top queens is a lesson in the power of self-liberation, of finding the courage to be truly different from what you’re seemingly born to be. Or, as RuPaul puts it, “We’re all born naked and the rest is drag.”

Tom Petty died of accidental overdose
Tom Petty died in October from an accidental drug overdose that his family said occurred on the day he found out his hip was broken. The coroner’s findings, released Friday, showed Petty had a mix of prescription painkillers — including fentanyl and oxycodone — as well as sedatives and an antidepressant in his system. In a statement, Petty’s wife and daughter said, “We feel confident that this was, as the coroner found, an unfortunate accident.” (AP) “Jumanji” tops box office for third straight weekend, with $20 million

REVERSE TYPE II DIABETES You’re Invited to a
Free Diabetic Event
Here is what Drs. Chaney’s patients are saying... “When I started my A1C was 12.5 - it was terrifying. The program to me was life changing. When I thought I was eating right they let me know that what I was eating was good for some people but it wasn’t good for me. I thank God for Dr. Steph and Dr. Tom Chaney because they turned my life around.”
“I am reporting to you three years after joining the program. I am 50 pounds lighter, I am happier, healthier and my A1C is no longer 13 but 5.4.” -Glennis G.
-Milton A.
“I can not tell you how great I feel. My energy is way up and my sleep is so much better. I am thrilled with Dr. Tom and Dr. Steph for helping me regain my personal health and reverse my diabetes.”
-Barry B.
“When I started this program my A1C was 8.9. My current A1C is 5.7. I was taking Metformin and two types of blood pressure medications. My blood sugars before the program were running in the 180’s. Now my blood sugars are running in the 110’s. After 2 months in the program my doctors stopped my Metformin that was phenomenal! I’ve also lost 25 pounds.”
“My first visit was very pleasant. My second visit is what changed my life. I have been a patient for 6 months. My A1C has gone from 6.6 to 5.7. I started out 70 pounds heavier. But coming to Living Health wasn’t about weight loss it was about type 2 diabetes. As you can see from my numbers that my type 2 diabetes has been reversed which is the intent of the program.”
“I came to this program because my A1C had drastically gone up to 9.2 and I was 215 pounds. Six months into the program my A1C dropped from 9.2 to 6.2 and my weight has dropped from 215 pounds to 195.”
“All I can say is it really works. I’ve been in the program for 5 months and I feel like a whole new woman. I’ve lost 40 pounds, I’m not on any diabetic medication anymore - that stopped pretty quick! My A1C went from 7.8 to 6.”
-Marissa M. My A1C was 8. Two months after that it was 6.4. As of a couple of days ago it is 5.9. I am ecstatic about that. I can only hope...I know, not hope, I know...that my blood sugars have come down, so the weight will come off. The blood pressure, I’ll be off of that medication. I have no doubt that I’ll be off of my diabetes medication and it’s all thanks to the Drs. Chaney and their facilities and I’m so happy.”

The hashtag #BabyWest trended on Twitter in the U.S. on Friday, with Kardashian West also tweeting out the nickname Chi. (AP)
