An African Grey parrot is home after being trapped for nearly three nights in a storm drain in Los Angeles. Arturo Vasquez tells KABC-TV he turned to YouTube parrot advocate Marlene Mc’Cohen when no one would help him try to free his 10-year-old parrot, Milly. Mc’Cohen says she rounded up a group of volunteers, who improvised using cameras, piping and remote control vehicles. They eventually coaxed Milly out of the drain. (AP)
A drunk man in Maine took the wrong Lyft and tried to enter someone else’s house by mistake. Cape Elizabeth police say the man got into a Lyft called by a neighbor. The man was dropped off early Saturday and staggered to a nearby home, thinking it was his. He caused a ruckus trying to get in, and the owner called police. Police Chief Paul Fenton says the intoxicated man was taken to the station to sober up. Fenton says the man is very sorry. (AP)

‘My chief is a girl?! High five!’ Amal Awad makes history in Hyattsville in three different ways
CHERYL DIAZ MEYER (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)
HYATTSVILLE, MD. Amal Awad started her law enforcement career in the early 1990s as a Prince George’s County officer patrolling the Hyattsville area. It was a quiet Maryland city known for its historic homes. There was no Metro station outside of what was then called Prince George’s Plaza (now the Mall at Prince George’s). And Awad was the only black woman working as a county patrol officer on her beat. Almost 30 years later, the city’s historic home district sits adjacent to an urban arts district. And Awad is Hyattsville’s newest police chief, making history as the first black, first female and first LGBT chief in the department’s 132-year history. “The magnitude of that really didn’t strike me until I saw it in print somewhere: 132 years,” Awad said. She takes over a department of 48 officers who patrol the rapidly changing and growing city of 18,000 just outside Washington.
Amal Awad is Hyattsville, Md.’s first black, first female and first LGBT police chief.
Awad hopes to take her personal and professional experiences to build on the department’s history and move the agency forward. “Little girls are like, ‘My chief is a girl?! High five!’ ” Awad said. “It’s a good feeling because you’re standing in a position where you’re able to influence and inspire young people to aspire to do something to help the greater good.” Awad, 51, grew up in the District with her single mother, who raised seven children. She chose

a career in law enforcement after studying art history at the University of Maryland and joined Prince George’s County police in 1990. During her 27 years with Prince George’s, Awad rose in the ranks, supervising the robbery suppression team, working as a patrol shift commander and eventually retiring as a major who oversaw the district station that covers Bowie. When Douglas Holland retired last summer in Hyattsville, Awad took over as acting chief before being sworn in permanently. Her wife, Jade, and their 19-year-old daughter, Saphires, attended Awad’s swearing-in ceremony in December. Awad said she encountered challenges working in a maledominated profession. Other officers would tease female officers who befriended her, she said, because she is gay. And she lacked female mentors who looked like her. But, Awad added, many male officers and commanders — black and white — helped her get ahead. And her experiences, she said, make her more aware of her “responsibility to everyone.” LYNH BUI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

New Va. legislative map could be boost to Dems
EASTERN SHORE NATIVES
Douglass and Tubman to get statues in Md.
VIRGINIA A panel of federal judges has chosen a redistricting map for Virginia’s House of Delegates that could shift some districts toward Democrats and help the party gain control in this year’s election. The judges ordered a new map in June after ruling that lawmakers had racially gerrymandered 11 House districts by packing black voters into them. On Tuesday, the judges chose new district lines from a series of proposals submitted by a special master. The judges gave all sides until Feb. 1 to file objections. An analysis of the maps by the nonpartisan Virginia Public Access Project shows the plan could shift six Republican-held districts toward Democrats, including the district of House Speaker Kirk Cox, which would become 32 percent more Democratic. Cox called the redistricting modules chosen by the court “legally indefensible” and said they attempt to “give Democrats an advantage at every turn.” “The modules selected by the Court target senior Republicans, myself included, without a substantive basis in the law,” Cox said. The U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the GOP’s appeal this spring. The high court rejected a request from

Republicans to put on hold the lower court’s ruling, which means the election season will begin using whatever map is finalized by the lower court. Cox said no matter what happens, “Republicans are prepared to defend and rebuild our majority in the House.” Republicans now hold a 51-48 majority in the House, with one additional seat to be decided in a special election next month. The Virginia Public Access Project calculates that the maps would move between 370,000 and 436,000 voters to new districts. The 11 districts that were found to be gerrymandered were mostly in the Richmond and
Hampton Roads area. Jesse Richman, a political science professor at Old Dominion University, said the redrawn districts could shift the balance of power in the General Assembly. “The state has moved in a much bluer direction lately, and on the basis of statewide elections, it looks like the Democrats may well have the upper hand in state politics,” Richman said. “The district lines had provided some shelter for Republicans in the House of Delegates. … If this stands, we’re more likely to see the chamber change parties in the next election, barring some major unforeseen shift in political winds.” DENISE LAVOIE (AP)
A Maryland board has approved a contract to put bronze statues of Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass in the historic Maryland State House in Annapolis. The Board of Public Works voted 3-0 for the $575,000 contract Wednesday for the statues of the Maryland-born abolitionists. Both Tubman and Douglass were born on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. The board comprises Gov. Larry Hogan, Treasurer Nancy Kopp and Comptroller Peter Franchot. The contract with The Christmas Company, of Sterling, Va., calls for completing the work within 390 days. The life-size bronze statues will be installed in the Old House Chamber, where the legislature adopted its state Constitution in 1864 that abolished slavery. (AP/THE WASHINGTON POST)

Proposed bill will require that clergy report abuse D.C. Attorney General Karl Racine is proposing legislation to add clergy to the list of mandatory reporters who must tell authorities about suspected child abuse or neglect, the latest fallout from a growing clergy sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic Church. Racine’s bill also would require mandatory reporters to attend training on their responsibilities under the law and would increase penalties for failing to report abuse. Survivor advocates have said training and penalties are important for making such measures effective. (TWP) VIRGINIA
Hedgehogs, which are increasingly popular as pets, are no longer illegal to own in Fairfax County. On Tuesday, the county’s Board of Supervisors legalized hedgehogs as household pets. It also lifted a rule requiring a permit to keep hermit crabs and chinchillas. “The board added these three animals to the list of commonly accepted pets,” the county said in a statement. Hedgehogs are still banned as pets in D.C. (TWP)

Eleven arrested urging Congress to reopen federal government THE DISTRICT On the 33rd day of a partial government shutdown that has left hundreds of thousands of federal workers without pay, some staged a sit-in Wednesday outside the offices of the senators they blame for helping to keep the government closed. The protest, led by union
leaders from the National Federation of Federal Employees, was meant to draw attention to the plight of federal workers — many of whom have had to dig into their savings, take on side jobs and seek help from food banks and other charitable programs to stay afloat. Eleven protesters, many of them union leaders, were arrested Wednesday. Hundreds of out-of-work federal workers, union officials and supporters stood in silence for 33 minutes — one for each day of the

“We want senators to see the faces of the people who are being hurt by this [shutdown], and to tell them it’s time to stop holding
federal employees hostage,” said Brittany Holder, a spokeswoman for the NFFE. Inside the Hart Senate Office Building, where protest signs are banned, workers instead wrote messages on Styrofoam plates. “Jobs not walls,” read one. “Will work for pay,” read another. “Please let us work,” said several more. The demonstration came one day before the Senate is scheduled to vote on a pair of competing bills to reopen the government — one from Democrats and one from President Trump. Neither bill appeared likely to earn the support needed to advance. MARISSA J. LANG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

State of the Union standoff Pelosi tells Trump: No address to Congress until shutdown ends
Trump prepares for shutdown to last into March
GETTY IMAGES
POLITICS In a high-stakes case of dare a n d d o u bl e - d a r e , H o u s e Speaker Nancy Pelosi served notice Wednesday that President Trump won’t be allowed to deliver his State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress next week. She took the step after Trump said he planned to show up in spite of Democratic objections to the speech taking place when big swaths of the government are shut down. Denied that grand venue, Trump promised to come up with some sort of alternative event. But the White House was scrambling to find something matching the gravitas of the traditional address from the dais of the House to lawmakers from both parties, Supreme Court justices, invited guests and a television audience of millions. “I think that’s a great blotch on the incredible country that we all love,” Trump said. “It’s a great, great horrible mark.” Fireworks over the speech shot back and forth between the Capitol and the White House as the monthlong partial government shutdown showed no signs of ending. Last week, Pelosi had asked Trump to make other plans but stopped short of denying him the chamber for his address. T r ump c a l led her bluff
President Trump will seek a new site for his speech as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ruled out an address to Congress.
Wednesday in a letter, saying he intended to come anyway. Pelosi quickly squelched the speech, writing back that the House “will not consider a concurrent resolution authorizing the President’s State of the Union address in the House Chamber until government has opened.” Pelosi said that when she extended her Jan. 3 invitation to Trump to deliver the State of the Union address on Jan. 29, there was no thought that the government would still be shut down. Moments after her letter became public, Trump told reporters he wasn’t surprised by Pelosi’s action. Democrats have become “radicalized,” he claimed. The president cannot speak in front of a joint session of Congress without both chambers’
Shutdown votes The Senate prepared to vote today on dueling proposals on the shutdown. A Republican one would give Trump money for the wall, while one from Democrats would reopen government through Feb. 8, with no wall money, giving bargainers time to talk about it. Both proposals were likely to fail to reach the 60-vote threshold needed in the Senate. House Democrats were putting forward a new proposal as well. (AP)
explicit permission. A resolution needs to be approved by both chambers specifying the date and time for receiving an address from the president. The Constitution states only that the president “shall from time to time give to the Congress
Information of the State of the Union,” meaning the president can speak anywhere he chooses or give his update in writing. The address has been delayed before. Ronald Reagan’s 1986 State of the Union address was postponed after the Challenger space shuttle exploded in flight on Jan. 28 of that year. Officials have been considering alternative venues for the speech, including a rally-style event, an Oval Office address, a speech in the Senate chamber and even a visit to the Mexican border. North Carolina’s House speaker, Tim Moore, invited Trump to deliver the speech in the North Carolina House chamber, and Michigan House Speaker Lee Chatfield has offered his state Capitol as well. POLITICS White House acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney has pressed agency leaders to provide him with a list of the highest-impact programs that will be jeopardized if the shutdown continues into March and April, people familiar with the directive said. Mulvaney, above, wants the list no later than Friday, these people said, and it’s the firmest evidence to date that the White House is preparing for a lengthy funding lapse that could have consequences for the economy and government services. The request is the first known inquiry from a top White House official seeking information about the spreading impact of the shutdown, which is well into its fifth week and is the longest in U.S. history. So far, top White House officials have been particularly focused on lengthening wait times at airport security, but not the sprawling interruption of programs elsewhere in the government. The shutdown has already caused the federal government to stop paying 800,000 employees, but the impact is expected to become exponentially broader in the coming weeks. The federal court system is likely to halt major operations after Feb. 1, and the Department of Agriculture does not have funding to pay food stamp benefits in March to roughly 40 million people. Nurse arrested in rape of patient PHOENIX A nurse who was supposed to be looking after an incapacitated woman at a long-term health care facility has been charged with raping her, weeks after she stunned her caregivers and family by giving birth to a baby boy, Phoenix police said Wednesday. Investigators arrested Nathan Sutherland, a licensed practical nurse, on suspicion of one count of sexual assault and one count of vulnerable adult abuse, Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams said. The surprise birth late last month triggered reviews by state agencies and highlighted safety concerns for patients who are severely disabled or incapacitated. It also prompted authorities to test the DNA of all the men who worked at the Hacienda HealthCare facility. Sutherland, 36, submitted his DNA sample under court order

Tuesday and the results came back a few hours later, showing he was a match to the baby. He declined to Sutherland speak with police. Hacienda officials fired Sutherland after learning of his arrest. The 29-year-old victim has been in long-term care since age 3 and gave birth at the facility on Dec. 29. Employees said they had no idea she was pregnant. Earlier stories had described the patient as being comatose or in a vegetative state. But her parents released a statement Tuesday disputing that characterization. They described her as intellectually disabled because of seizures. While she doesn’t speak, she has some mobility in her limbs, head and neck. She also responds to sound and can make facial gestures. Venezuela leader cuts ties with U.S. Opponent declares himself interim president as Trump and others call on Maduro to resign CARACAS, VENEZUELA Venezuela’s crisis quickly escalated Wednesday, as an opposition leader backed by the Trump administration declared himself interim president in a direct challenge to embattled socialist Nicolas Maduro, who retaliated by breaking off relations with the U.S., his biggest trade partner. For the past two weeks, since Maduro began a second six-year term in the face of widespread international condemnation, the
newly invigorated opposition had been preparing for nationwide demonstrations Wednesday. Maduro has shown no signs of leaving, but his main rival, National Assembly President Juan Guaido, upped the ante by declaring himself interim president before masses of antigovernment demonstrators — the only way, he said, to rescue Venezuela from “dictatorship.” The U.S. led a chorus of nations that immediately backed the

He swiftly cut off diplomatic relations with the U.S., the biggest importer of the OPEC nation’s oil, giving U.S. diplomats 72 hours to leave the country. “Before the people and nations of the world, and as constitutional president. ... Veterinarians’ dark side Burdened by debt and stress, animal doctors are committing suicide at higher rates Robin Stamey, 58, holds her toy poodle, Gracie, in Wildwood, Fla., earlier this month.
CHARLOTTE KESL (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)
HEALTH Pushed to the brink by mounting debt and compassion fatigue, veterinarians are committing suicide at rates higher than the general population, often killing themselves with drugs meant for their patients. On a brisk fall evening in Elizabeth City, N.C., Robin Stamey sat in her bed and prepared to take her own life. But as she turned to look at Gracie, her apricot toy poodle, Stamey started to sob. She couldn’t do it. “The only person I couldn’t explain my suicide to was my dog, who was sitting there looking into my eyes,” Stamey recalled. “She’s the reason I’m still alive.” After going back to school at age 36 to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming a veterinarian, Stamey graduated from veterinary school with more than $180,000 in student debt. Her first vet jobs paid about $40,000 a year. Those financial troubles were compounded by the strains of the job, which is known for taking immense emotional, physical and mental tolls on its professionals. Stamey felt isolated in her pain at the time, but she has since learned a startling truth: Veterinarians are in the midst of a suicide epidemic. On Jan. 1, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released the first study to ever examine veterinarian mortality rates in America. The results were grim: Between 1979 and 2015, male and female veterinarians committed suicide 2 and 3.5 times more often than the national average, respectively. These findings not only reflect a higher suicide rate among all veterinarians but also suggest that women in the field are more likely to take their own lives, a stark contrast to trends within

the general population. Considering the profession is becoming increasingly femaledominated (more than 60 percent of U.S. veterinarians and 80 percent of veterinary students are now women), the study’s authors suggested this trend could foreshadow even more veterinarian suicides in the years to come.

Additional research, including a 2015 CDC study that found 1 in 6 veterinarians have considered suicide, has shaken the veterinary world to its core, exposing a growing crisis. People don’t become veterinarians for prestige, power or high pay. But diving into passiondriven professions leaves the door

open for compassion fatigue and burnout, and the veterinary field is riddled with mental health hazards. Two of the largest factors at play are money and death. Recent studies by the American Veterinary Medical Association show that the average veterinary student now graduates with $143,000 or more in debt. Veterinary salaries — which start at about $67,000 a year — aren’t keeping pace with rising tuition rates. Veterinarians are also consistently asked to act as animal undertakers. Euthanizing animals can cause what a recent study referred to as ethical conflict and moral distress, which arises when vets are forced to put aside their expert opinions and accept pet owners’ decisions about if and when to put their animals down. This proximity to death can thus make dying seem like a reasonable way to ease suffering. These factors create a troubling set of circumstances, especially since vets routinely have access to controlled euthanasia drugs. As this problem has become more publicly acknowledged, veterinarians have formed online support groups to discuss sensitive topics. Carrie Rountree, a vet tech who lives in Rock Hill, S.C., created the Facebook group #TheFightingBluesForAmanda to honor her friend, Amanda Ryan, after Ryan killed herself in September. In less than two months, the group’s membership grew to nearly 4,000 people and includes veterinary professionals from around the world. “Now that we have tools like this to connect with people from all across the globe, this issue can no longer be ignored,” Rountree said. “Only through awareness can we create true change.”
POLITICS Michael Cohen, President Trump’s former personal lawyer, will not testify before Congress next month, one of his attorneys said Wednesday — which could quash, at least temporarily, liberals’ hopes for a public hearing in which Trump’s ex-fixer airs the president’s dirty laundry. “Due to ongoing threats against his family from President Trump and [Rudy] Giuliani, as recently as this weekend, as well as Mr. Cohen’s continued cooperation with ongoing investigations ... Mr. Cohen’s appearance will be postponed to a later date,” Lanny J. Davis, an attorney for Cohen, said in a statement. Cohen had been scheduled to appear Feb. 7 before the House Oversight Committee. It is not clear to which “threats” Davis was referring, and Davis declined to provide more detail. “I would say he’s been threatened by the truth,” said Trump, who has been publicly critical of Cohen for his cooperation with special counsel Robert Mueller. Trump has also suggested Cohen’s father-in-law ought to be investigated. Giuliani, the president’s current lawyer, was skeptical of Cohen after BuzzFeed News reported last week that Cohen told Mueller’s office Trump had directed him to lie to Congress — an account the special counsel disputed in an unprecedented public statement. SEBRING, FLA. A gunman who opened fire inside a Florida bank Wednesday afternoon killed five people before surrendering to SWAT negotiators, police said. Zephen Xaver, 21, was arrested after the shooting at a SunTrust branch, Sebring police Chief Karl Hoglund said at a news conference. “Today’s been a tragic day in our community,” Hoglund said. “We’ve suffered significant loss at the hands of a senseless criminal doing a senseless crime.” The victims were not immediately identified. A man called police dispatch Wednesday afternoon and reported that he had fired shots inside the bank, Hoglund said. Initial negotiations failed to persuade the barricaded man to leave the bank, so the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team entered the building to continue negotiations, and the man eventually surrendered, he said.
Police didn’t say what charges Xaver would face or indicate a motive. Gov. Ron DeSantis was in the region for an infrastructure tour and traveled to Sebring after news of the shooting broke. He said the Florida Department of Law Enforcement would assist Sebring police and the Highlands sheriff’s office in any way possible. “Obviously, this is an individual who needs to face very swift and exacting justice,” DeSantis said of the gunman. An FBI mobile command unit arrived at the bank Wednesday evening to join the investigation. SunTrust Chairman and CEO Bill Rogers released a statement saying the bank is deeply saddened by the tragic shooting. “We are working with officials and dedicating ourselves to fully addressing the needs of all the individuals and families involved,” Rogers said. “Our entire team mourns this terrible loss.” (AP)

A battle of minds: Coaches only alike in their football IQ Bill Belichick outsmarts his rivals. The New England Patriots’ coach adds new plays mere hours before games and takes advantage of rules to dominate football like no one since Vince Lombardi in the 1960s. In Super Bowl LIII on Feb. 3, the old curmudgeon will meet his polar opposite — the Los Angeles Rams’ Sean McVay. There’s some symmetry in the QB battle between ageless wonder Tom Brady and young punk Jared Goff, but the difference between the two passers isn’t nearly as drastic
as the one on the sidelines. McVay, who turns 33 today and has a reputation for being a nice guy, is the youngest head coach in Super Bowl history. He has been with the Rams for only two years after serving as a Redskins assistant for seven seasons. Meanwhile, Belichick won his first Super Bowl as head coach when McVay was 16. Although the differences in experience and approach are stark, the geniuses have found similar success this season. Los Angeles and New England aren’t the NFL’s two best teams, but New Orleans and Kansas City on Sunday were
outsmarted by McVay and Belichick. Sure, the Rams got lucky when referees missed an obvious late pass interference call that would have likely assured a Saints win. But that’s football. And good coaches take advantage of breaks like that. While Belichick is the epitome of old school, McVay is an old soul. McVay’s DNA is pigskin: his grandfather John McVay coached the New York Giants from 1976 to 1978, then was a San Francisco 49ers executive for 16 years. McVay’s father, Tim, was a standout college safety at Indiana. Even McVay’s housemate, Rams assistant linebackers coach Chris Shula, is a grandson of legendary Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula. McVay was born for this moment. Anyone who has met McVay wasn’t surprised that the Rams took a chance on him when he was just 30. He has the football mind of someone twice his age — like 66-year-old Belichick. McVay’s
photographic memory allows him to remember every snap down to a 2006 college game he played. But Belichick has seen it all. He has done it all. Blanking Kansas City’s top-scoring offense in the first half of last week’s AFC championship game proved insurmountable for the Chiefs. When the Patriots faced the St. Louis Rams 17 years ago in what would become the first of five Super Bowl wins, Belichick stunned “The Greatest Show on Turf,” jumping out to a 17-3 lead before the Rams rallied late. New England was a 14-point underdog in the 20-17 win. Bettors stopped underestimating Belichick, and the Patriots haven’t been underdogs in their eight Super Bowls since that first title. On Feb. 3, expect the old man in the hoodie to have a few new tricks to show his young counterpart.
Stephen Curry torched the Wizards for 51 points, including 11 3-pointers, the last time his Warriors played them in October. When asked how the team should stop Golden State when it visits Capital One Arena tonight (8, TNT), Bradley Beal said, “Probably foul the s--- out of him.” The Wizards may simply need to defend as they have since the new year. The Wizards (20-26) have won six of nine games and had a defensive rating (104.7) ranked third in the NBA over that span. “Early in the year, we were thinking we could outscore everybody,” Beal said Wednesday. “The only way we’re going to win is if we defend for 48 minutes and understand the importance of it.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)

REDSKINS
Allen breaks 588-day silence Redskins president Bruce Allen took questions Tuesday from reporters in a group setting for the first time in 588 days.
He talked about a season he called a “roller coaster,” the team’s quarterback quandary, a beleaguered linebacker and an upcoming stadium deal. But he declined to address the team’s personnel decisions. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Redskins expect Foster to avoid suspension
Allen praises fan passion, talks of new stadium deal
The Redskins had a league-high 24 players on injured reserve in 2018. But Allen said, “we’re not going to use injuries as an excuse because we had opportunities to win some games at the end that we didn’t.” The team’s 7-9 record was “everybody’s,” Allen said, adding that team chemistry will be a priority. But being in the middle of the pack “means you’re close to being better,” he said. “I know where we were for 10 games, and we have to learn how to finish the season.”
Allen declined to answer directly how injured QB Alex Smith will contribute for the Redskins in 2019. “We don’t have to make that decision right now,” Allen said. Smith attended Monday’s Wizards game wearing a hulking wrap around his right leg, raising the question of whether he’d need another surgery. “He’s going to follow the doctor’s advice and his wife’s advice and we’ll see what happens,” Allen said. “If anyone can come back, it’s Alex.”
Allen said the team concluded its investigation into linebacker Reuben Foster and it does not expect the NFL to suspend him. Domestic violence charges against Foster were dropped this month, but NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy confirmed Foster remains on the commissioner’s exempt list, which effectively means he is on paid leave. “Reuben has demonstrated since he has been with us that … he wants to do things the right way,” Allen said.
When asked about a disconnect between fans’ feeling of futility and Allen’s optimism, he praised fans’ passion. “I know exactly what they want. They want to win football games,” he said. “I share their passion for the things that we can accomplish.” As for the distant future, Allen said a new stadium deal is still “feasible” by the time the FedEx Field lease expires in 2027. “Our goal is to build the best sports stadium in the world, and we believe that’s going to happen,” he said.

Demand has grown rapidly for their scented, soy-based candles, which can be purchased at several stores in D.C. and at select Macy’s across the country. The Gill brothers are pretty busy with school and their business, so they would make the most of a D.C. dream day and explore some of their favorite places around the city, along with a few new ones.
Ryan: Then we’d go to Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream at The Wharf, the best ice cream store in the whole world! My favorite ice cream is salted caramel — three scoops! Collin: I have two favorites: salted caramel and cookies and cream. Austin: Salted caramel and chocolate chip are my favorites. Collin: At The Wharf, we’d also check out Anchor and visit Matt [Vilbas], the owner. They are one of the shops in D.C. that carry our candles. Collin: I’d also like to see the ice rink at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden. We haven’t been there yet and would really like to go. Collin: Then we’d go to the International Spy Museum — I have not been there yet either. I would love to see the gadgets that are there. They have this umbrella that’s a shotgun and spy glasses that tape and record things.

American Ballet Theatre’s engagement is made possible through generous endowment support of The Lee and Juliet Folger Fund. Support for Ballet at the Kennedy Center is generously provided by Elizabeth and C. Michael Kojaian.
Austin: Then we would go to the National Mall and go on the merry-go-round. We’d also stop by the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural
History. We like to go to the bug exhibit — my favorite bug is a tarantula. Ryan: My favorite bug is like a spider mixed with a scorpion. It has claws and a tail that stands straight. Collin: My favorite bug is the butterfly. We’ve gone to the butterfly exhibit at least … Austin: At least 20 times!
Collin: To end my day, I would go home, lay on the couch, eat ice cream and then fall asleep. Ryan: At the end of the day, I would go to a bakery and eat everything! Actually, I would really spend my free day learning Spinjitzu from “The Lego Ninjago Movie.” AS TOLD TO STEPHANIE WILLIAMS (EXPRESS)

Vladimir Putin (Christopher Geary) plots his next move in the fictional drama “Kleptocracy.”
The man who became Putin Christopher Geary plays the Russian ruler in the decades-spanning ‘Kleptocracy’ STAGE Picture, if you will, Vladimir Putin in his jammies. “Putin’s public persona has been very well crafted,” says Christopher Geary, who portrays the Russian president in “Kleptocracy,” a drama set in the early 1990s through 2013 that’s having its world premiere at Arena Stage. “Who knows what he’s like when he is home alone with his thoughts? I’ve actually found freedom in that — you don’t know what he’s like when he’s putting
on his pajamas.” Geary gets to act out some of Putin’s private (though not pajama-fied) moments in the play, a fictionalized account of historical happenings that occurred after the fall of the Soviet Union, penned by “House of Cards” staff writer Kenneth Lin. With the collapse of communism, capitalism comes roaring into Russia, particularly for a group called the Oligarchs. Their leader, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, has maneuvered his way into
owning Yukos, the nation’s largest oil company. Khodorkovsky looks to open Russia even more to the world at large, but runs into opposition from a young Vladimir Putin. The play delves into the men’s complicated, often adversarial relationship over the two decades. Playing a real person — particularly one who remains in the public eye — maneuvering through real events always comes with certain challenges. Geary did research to orient himself to the historical setting (“It was a period of time when I was more concerned with my Sega console,” Geary says), but studying up has its limits. “Researching and understanding the historical context and the real-life people is what you need to do,” Geary says. “But at the end of the day it is still storytelling. It’s still people talking and listening and using tactics

from one another to get what they want. At some point you have to put the book down and say, ‘These are people fighting for what they want.’ That’s far more interesting.” “Kleptocracy” is at least partly about the forging of a man largely considered to be not exactly friendly to the interests of the United States. Still, Geary can’t let himself think of Putin
as the bad guy. “When capitalism and democracy were being introduced [in Russia], there was this distrust that it could actually work,” Geary says. “And there’s this primal need to take care of oneself. So I’ve tried to remain empathetic, just to understand [his] need to survive. People will do what they think they need to do to survive.” And, after all, Putin didn’t know how important his actions during the era of “Kleptocracy” would be — he was just a guy trying to get as much as he could. “You don’t wake up in the morning and think, ‘I’m living history,’ ” Geary says. “Looking back, you might be like, ‘Oh, that was a really big deal,’ but for the most part it’s like, ‘This is going to be a pretty challenging Tuesday.’ ” KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

‘Everything in Existence’ probes the infinite using tweets, data — and you EXHIBITS Artechouse’s new exhibition has a mind of its own. This is what makes “Everything in Existence” both exhilarating and unpredictable to the digital art space’s founders, Tatiana Pastukhova and Sandro Kereselidze. Each installation generates art in real time, interpreting various streams of data into a menagerie of abstract visuals with the help of computer software. In many ways, “Everything in Existence” is more like a theatrical performance than an art exhibition. “This is no different than
theater, except instead of real people, we have machines,” Pastukhova says. “There’s a chance that something could go wrong at any time, but the good thing is most of the time the audience does not notice behind the scenes.” “Everything in Existence,” which opened last week, marks the first North American solo show for Italian art studio fuse and the 11th exhibition for Artechouse since it opened in June 2017. The independent gallery has made serious headway in the creative world with its techsavvy approach to art, where machines are just as crucial to the creative process as the artists programming them. “Everything in Existence” feels like the pinnacle of this harmonious

We are excited when we ourselves are able to see the finished product.” “Everything in Existence,” which runs through March 10, is composed of fuse’s best works of the past 10 years. Visitors begin their journey with “Multiverse,” which is housed in a cavernous room with a reflective, mirrorlike floor. A vertical projection 130 feet wide and 24 feet high engulfs the entire room in cinematic computerized images that morph into various shapes. “Amygdala” generates abstract visuals using social media sentiments from Twitter.
“This is the whole point ... understanding more about this juxtaposition between us as humans versus the universe and the unknown that’s there beyond our imagination.”
“Multiverse” puts into perspective just how small we really are. “This is the whole point of ‘Everything in Existence’ — understanding more about this juxtaposition between us as humans versus the universe and the unknown that’s there beyond our imagination,” Pastukhova says. As visitors leave “Multiverse,” they head down a long, dark hallway with a sea of brightly lit monitors. This installation, “Snow Fall,” is the point where visitors can become a part of the exhibition. The movements of passers-by are captured with a depth sensor and their silhouettes are displayed on screen in front of a snowy backdrop. The outlines of the silhouettes get sharper the longer someone stands in front of the monitors,
which encourages visitors to slow down and appreciate the art. “The piece is the most visual and presentable way of understanding how someone’s presence affects the world around them,” Pastukhova says. The dark hallway leads to “Amygdala,” one of the most dramatic installations in the show. The piece is powered by a computer algorithm that analyzes social media sentiments on Twitter in real time and categorizes them into six different emotions: happiness, sadness, fear, anger, disgust and amazement. Each emotion is assigned a color and displayed as an abstract visual flashed on 15 LED columns that are arranged in a large circle. “No matter how small we think we are, we still have an effect
“Everything in Existence” can make visitors ponder their very being
on things,” Pastukhova says of the installation. “[‘Amygdala’] is a way to see ourselves within this larger existence that is out there.” Pastukhova says “Amygdala” will translate roughly 9 million tweets into art by the end of the show’s run at Artechouse. Visitors can stand in the center and gawk at the steady drumbeat of visuals, or watch the data being analyzed through monitors located at the back of the installation. To view the last installation, you’ll need to look up, then down. “Clepsydra” translates sound with computerized visuals that are projected on plexiglass fastened to the ceiling. The Multiverse cocktail, for instance, is a warm drink offering a sweet and distinct blend of spices and citruses such as rosemary, lemon, honey and ginger kombucha. The cocktails are topped with a circular, paper-thin edible design that projects graphics when viewed through Artechouse’s app. With the vast amount of technology needed to run “Everything in Existence,” it’s no surprise that the nine-month planning process was a tedious

Assembling the exhibition even required the occasional 24-hour workday — with Pastukhova and Kereselidze staying overnight at the gallery — but that’s just the nature of the beast when working with art that doesn’t stop. “There’s never a final product with an exhibit like this,” Pastukhova says. “It evolves, it changes. It’s no trick: ‘Harlequinade’ is back The comic ballet gets a painstaking revival — steps, costumes and all
DANCE Classical ballet is not big on happy endings. As you may recall seeing through mascarastained tears, “Swan Lake,” “La Sylphide” and, of course, “Romeo and Juliet” all typically end with the leads dying in the arms of their respective lovers. With “Harlequinade,” opening at the Kennedy Center on Tuesday, American Ballet Theatre is lightening things up with a funny ballet full of physical comedy.
There’s even a happy ending: The hero gets the girl — and, judging by the dozens of children who twirl across the stage after the wedding, you can assume they go on to have a huge family. Originally staged in 1900 as a private entertainment for the Russian tsar and his court, Marius Petipa’s “Harlequinade” went on to be a huge hit. A series of pantomime sketches and dance set pieces pinned to a barelythere plot (Harlequin wants to marry Columbine; Columbine’s father wants her to marry some rich old dude instead), “Harlequinade” played to enthusiastic audiences for nearly two decades.
Then, it was largely forgotten. That is, it was until American Ballet Theatre choreographer Alexei Ratmansky dug up and deciphered the original steps of the ballet — movements that had been written down by Petipa using an obscure notation system. Ratmansky also enlisted designer Robert Perdziola to create costumes in keeping with the originals. “I really went down the research rabbit hole, looking at all the sketches and photos I could find,” Perdziola says. The costume designer immediately saw that this was going to be a big job. Unlike most
ballets, “Harlequinade” calls for a lot of accessories, including wigs, masks, hats and gloves. Additionally, the costumes are more cumbersome than what dancers are used to today — men in “Harlequinade” wear collars and ruffs; women wear mostly knee-length dresses and lots of layers. In the second act, there are even a few dancers in floorlength gowns with trains. “I was so worried about those trains,” Perdziola says, “But the ABT dancers are so good, no one tripped, at least not that I saw.” Hats have gone flying on occasion, but “Harlequinade” theatrical costumes are worth the
technical challenges they present, Perdziola says, because they help emphasize the ballet’s roots in commedia dell’arte, a popular form of Italian theater at the time. “All the characters in ‘Harlequinade’ are commedia dell’arte stock characters,” he says. “The original audience would have recognized them instantly.” Today’s audiences might not be quite so familiar with the types, so we asked Perdziola to break them down for us. A look at the iconic characters and their costumes
1
Harlequin
The main character of “Harlequinade” is a trickster, and his energetic and vibrant costume reflects his personality. “We had it all digitally printed. But then I also got bits of actual fabric — like stretch velvet and stretch corduroy — to apply on top,” Perdziola says. “So as the figure turns, it’s like a faceted surface that catches the light.” In the design sketches for the original “Harlequinade,” rabbit feet hang from Harlequin’s hat, but photos from the production show tassels instead. Perdziola followed the same path, originally trying for rabbit feet but then switching to tassels. “The feet were too cumbersome,” he says. A traditional part of Harlequin’s costume in other commedia dell’arte productions, the rabbit feet may emphasize the character’s quick wit. Also, notice the character’s stick, which he
occasionally slaps on the ground — the origin of the word slapstick.
2
Pierrot
Sad clown Pierrot’s droopy sleeves telegraph his sleepy character. “He’s kind of the fool of the neighborhood. He’s not the brightest wit,” Perdziola says. Pierrot’s huge, ridiculous hat helps the dancer get into a clownish mindset. “You put that on and it frames the head. Instead of a nuisance, it becomes part of the character.”
3
Pierrette
One of the smartest characters of the bunch, Pierrette is always sharply dressed. She’s also the unlikely consort of sleepy Pierrot, whom she constantly harangues and hits with her fan. “She’s just got a lot of style. She comes out and you think, ‘OK, I see
who is driving this relationship,’ ” Perdziola says. Pierrette’s outfit for this moment in the original productions of “Harlequinade” was a dress and a jacket, but Perdziola streamlined it all into one garment for the ballet’s revival. “The original seemed kind of clunky to me,” he says.
4
4
Columbine
Another smart and smartly dressed woman, Columbine uses her wits to avoid the amorous overtures of other characters. The hat in her Act I costume was a particular challenge, Perdziola says, as it threatened to fall off the dancer’s head. So he eventually created a version that gets pinned to the dancer’s wig from the inside, and then flips closed like a lid. “It really needed to stay at that jaunty angle, which is hard to do,” Perdziola says.

Few things can make a person feel more alone than appdriven dating, says Jared Freid, a comedian and co-host of the popular dating podcast “U Up?” “With the apps, there are more opportunities, but there’s also a lot more rejection,” he says. When he and his friend Jordana Abraham launched their podcast in 2017, they hoped to help listeners feel a little less alone. “People are just happy for the commiseration,” he says. “Jordana and I, we’re not experts. We’re just people that will speak honestly, and that’s kind of tough to find,” Freid says. “Together we can bring a female and a male perspective to everything,” adds Abraham, who co-founded the digital brand Betches, which produces the podcast. Commiseration works even better in person, so Freid and Abraham have started bringing their advice to live audiences with “U Up? Live!” (which comes to Sixth & I on Thursday). “We take questions from the audience, bring people up onstage and give them dating profile makeovers. It’s a very lively show,” Freid says. Over the past two years, the “U Up?” duo have noticed some common online dating mistakes. Here are five pitfalls that Freid and Abraham want everyone to avoid. SADIE DINGFELDER (EXPRESS) Don’t act like you’re better than the app. “A lot of people go on these apps very passively, very hesitantly, like they’re ready to delete it any minute,” Abraham says. “In order for the apps to work, you really have to commit to actually being engaging on them.”
Don’t use a too-cute photo of yourself. “Whether it’s pictures of you from, like, 2013, or pictures of you where you appear a little thinner or a little better looking than you might actually be, I think that’s a mistake,” Abraham says. If you think you might be doing this, check with a stranger, because “your friends are not going to tell you that your favorite picture doesn’t look like you,” Freid says.
Don’t assume a ton of texts is a good sign. “A lot of people are judging effort by the fingers and not by the feet,” Freid says. “Do they make the time to meet you at a

bar, to do a date, to go meet your friends? That’s real effort. Texting is not effort.”
Don’t let your imagination go wild. “It’s something we all do. You match with someone and look them up on Instagram, look them up on Facebook — do a gentle stalk — and you’re like, ‘Oh, we’re together. This is perfect. We’re getting married,’” Freid says. In addition to setting yourself up for disappointment, you’re also likely to miss connecting with real people instead of the versions you’ve conjured up in your head, he says.
Don’t treat dating like a job. “It’s so important to remember that this should be fun and you should be able to have a good time with it,” Abraham says. “Dating should be light and fun. We don’t have to take ourselves too seriously.” Sixth and I, 600 I St. NW; Thu., 8 p.m., sold out.

Brandy hasn’t released an album since 2012, but the singer-actress has stayed busy, most notably portraying murderous chorus girl Roxie Hart in “Chicago” — a gig that brought her to D.C. for the show’s 2017 run at the Kennedy Center. The Monster Jam — a touring monster truck competition series — makes its annual stop in D.C. this weekend for three shows of revved-up big-wheel action.
At 33, and with a decade of mixtapes under his belt, Memphisbased rapper Young Dolph is practically an elder statesman, but his gruff-and-tough approach to trap rap is very of-the-moment. Four men accuse Singer of sexual misconduct
Box office juggernauts “Bohemian Rhapsody,” top, and “Black Panther” have both landed best picture nominations at the Academy Awards.
nominee Rami Malek — a separate category is superfluous, to say the least. It’s no surprise, and it’s altogether fitting, that the film was honored for sound mixing and editing, and for Malek’s uncanny portrayal of Mercury. But the consideration of this flawed, if insistently enjoyable, exercise in “Behind the Music” cliches (and box office domination) as one of the finest movies of the year proves another rule: Academy voters aren’t the hidebound graybeards or
tetchy aesthetic purists their organizational title suggests. Like the audiences they’re so desperate to please, the films they value most are those that simply make them feel good — whether about their art form, their industry or their most undemanding and commercially self-interested tastes. Times may be changing, but some fundamentals stay reliably the same. Follow Ann Hornaday on Twitter @AnnHornaday

Bryan Singer is facing new allegations of sexual misconduct after four men accused the filmmaker of abusing them while they were underage, The Atlantic reported Wednesday. Singer, 53, who is credited as the director of “Bohemian Rhapsody” despite having been fired during production, denied the accusations and referred to the article as a “homophobic smear piece.” He has previously denied other allegations of misconduct over the years. and criticisms about inclusion and representation, but feels just as comfortable sticking to familiar safe spaces as in embracing the inevitability — and invigoration — of change. Observers might remember a brief period last year when the academy announced a plan to introduce a new Oscar category of “best popular film,” a notion that was quickly derided as a sop to accusations of elitism and sagging TV ratings. As the strong showing for box office hits “Black Panther” (seven nominations) and “A Star Is Born” (eight nominations) attests, such pandering isn’t just offensive but supremely unnecessary at a time when entertaining, audience-friendly movies are proving just as well-executed and thematically complex as the toniest art-house film. In fact, “Black Panther” made history as the first superhero spectacle to earn a nomination for best picture. When voters see fit to give a best picture nod to “Bohemian Rhapsody” — whose cringeworthy dialogue, dreary biopic structure and corny uplift couldn’t stop a showstopping performance from best actor

“BoRhap”? Really? For an Oscar season many insiders have been describing as the weirdest in decades, the nominations announced on Tuesday were decidedly un-weird. The 91st Academy Awards ceremony, which will be televised Feb. 24, promises to be a something-for-everyone celebration, from edgy indies (“Vice,” “The Favourite”) to adamantly personal statements (“BlacKkKlansman,” “Roma”). The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences even found room for the kind of middlebrow crowd-pleaser for which it has been roundly criticized for honoring in the past, not just with the warmhearted road picture “Green Book” but also the wildly uneven but undeniably rousing Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody.” For the most part, this year’s crop of nominees reflects a movie industry and gatekeeping culture that on the surface might be suffering from anxieties about disruptive distribution models, waning popularity with audiences

trending “I don’t care who you are, who you stan, who you don’t. Just please be respectful of The Dolan Twins and their family through this.” @ZISTRICTED, addressing the bizarre invasion of privacy experienced by
YouTubers Grayson, left, and Ethan Dolan. After they announced to fans that their father, Sean, had died of cancer, internet trolls began distributing information about the funeral, urging fans to attend. Fandom accounts for K-Pop bands also disparaged Sean Dolan’s death, saying it was payback for Grayson mocking overworked K-Pop stars last year. The 19-year-old twins took to Twitter on Tuesday, telling fans not to come to the funeral.
@LINDSAYGUENTZEL, reacting to Villa Italian Kitchen’s announcement that would be offering a Gender Reveal Lasagna Catering Package for expectant couples. The lasagna’s cheese will be dyed either blue or pink to coincide with the baby’s gender. The newest addition to the gender reveal craze has Twitter users calling for simpler reveals.

Though the list mentioned normal items such as “swimmies” and ice skates, the inclusion of rope, shark repellent and a reminder to “take care of the thing with that guy” had people questioning Gritty’s intentions.
“MY PARENTS ARE ON A TRAIN WITH THE ENTIRE MANCHESTER UNITED SQUAD AND THEY DON’T HAVE A CLUE.” @N8NATHANPATRICK, detailing how his parents met Paul Pogba on a train. After Manchester’s game of Uno got rowdy, Pogba apologized to Patrick’s parents and took a photo with them.
