The owner of a $300,000 yellow Ferrari has sued Marriott, saying a hotel valet gave his keys to a stranger trying to impress a woman. In July, lawyer James “Skip” Fowler, 73, parked his 2014 Ferrari at the Vinoy Renaissance Resort in St. Petersburg, Fla. Police said Levi Miles, 29, later got the keys from a valet and drove off. Miles was arrested quickly, but Fowler said he had to pay legal fees and bills to fix the car, which he said has declined in value. (AP)

Students, police build trust HERNDON, VA. Students hesitated when Renee Gorman shared the idea of inviting police officers to Hutchison Elementary School in Herndon, Va., for a new school club two years ago. “They’re bad,” the kids said of police, Gorman recalled. The response, school officials said, reflected fears in the community. Hutchison is a school with newcomers from El Salvador and Honduras who arrive in Fairfax County seeking safety. About 70 percent of the school’s students are English learners. Gorman, a school counselor, has worked with children whose parents were deported and who regard police warily.

Police officers interact with students in Project Hope at Hutchison.

The remedy, she said, has been Project Hope, an after-school club intended to diminish fears and build relationships between schoolchildren and officers from the Herndon and Fairfax police departments. Gorman hand-picks students she feels would benefit,

identifying children new to the country, those who may need to be diverted from a troubled path and others who can serve as role models for their peers. The activities are mostly lighthearted and breezy — kickball in the summertime, games of Uno or an ice cream social. In

time, Gorman said, the suspicion began to melt away. The students, she said, now ask this about the police: “Are they coming?” Ray Lonnett, the school’s principal, said ties forged have reached beyond students, extending to their families. Community members have sought assurance that local police won’t act on behalf of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, he said. Apprehensions about local police haven’t fully subsided, but Lonnett senses progress. More parents are attending school events. “We didn’t want our parents to be fearful to come into the school,” he said. “So, we’ve really worked to build this partnership to make sure our entire community can feel comfortable with the police.” DEBBIE TRUONG

County to end agreement on immigrant detention

Man convicted in fatal crash told to carry victim’s photo

The chief of D.C. secondary schools has been removed from her post, making her the highest-ranking official to be relieved of duties following an investigation that focused on whether Ballou High School in Southeast Washington improperly graduated students. D.C. schools spokeswoman Kristina Saccone said officials placed Jane Spence, the secondary schools chief, on administrative leave, but she would not say if or when Spence would return to her job. Saccone would also not say when Spence was placed on leave. All middle and high school principals report to Spence. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Virginia’s most populous county will no longer automatically hold inmates past their release date at the request of federal immigration officials. Fairfax County’s elected sheriff, Stacey Kincaid, said Tuesday that she is ending an agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement under which the county jail would continue to hold inmates at the request of ICE. Beginning May 23, Kincaid said, inmates will be detained past their release date only if a court has issued a criminal detainer. Under the contract launched in 2012, the county has kept inmates targeted by ICE for as many as 48 hours beyond their release dates. (AP/TWP)

A Baltimore man sentenced to prison in a fatal crash has also been ordered to carry a picture of the victim for the next six years. The Capital reports that Circuit Judge Ronald Silkworth included the caveat in sentencing Johnathan Derek Simms, 33, to 18 months in prison, five years’ probation and 500 hours of community service Tuesday. Wherever he goes, Simms must carry a wallet-sized photo of 66-year-old Louise Donner, who was killed in an April 2016 head-on crash in Glen Burnie as Simms fled an attempted traffic stop. Silkworth said the picture will remind Simms of the damage his actions caused. (AP)

FAIRFAX COUNTY Police on Wednesday released a dashboard video showing the fatal shooting of a driver at the end of a car chase on a Northern Virginia highway. Lawyers for the driver’s family say the video provides clear evidence that police overreacted by drawing and firing their weapons without cause. Bijan Ghaisar, 25, of McLean died after the Nov. 17 chase, in which he was shot by U.S. Park Police. Authorities say Ghaisar fled after being involved in a crash on the George Washington Parkway. The FBI is investigating the shooting. Fairfax County Police Chief Edwin Roessler said he released the video in an effort at transparency. The four-minute nighttime

video shows a chase beginning on the parkway, then turning into a residential neighborhood. Ghaisar It shows the car driven by Ghaisar stopping twice during the chase, and officers approaching the car with guns drawn. In both cases, Ghaisar drives off. At the third and final stop, officers with guns drawn approach the car at the driver-side door. When the car starts to move again, five gunshots are heard. The car starts to drift into a ditch, and two more sets of two gunshots are heard. “The video does not provide all the answers,” Roessler said in a statement. “However, we should all have confidence in the FBI’s investigation of this matter as I know it will be thorough, objective and professional.”

‘Sanctuary’ battle escalates Justice Department threatens to subpoena 23 jurisdictions’ records NATIONAL SECURITY The Justice Department on Wednesday escalated its attempt to crack down on so-called “sanctuary” jurisdictions, threatening to subpoena 23 states, cities and other localities that have policies the department suspects might be unlawfully interfering with immigration enforcement. President Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions have long promised to target places with policies friendly to those in the country illegally — warning they might withhold federal money from some and trying to tie grant

eligibility to cooperation with federal authorities on immigration matters. The Justice Department had previously contacted the 23 jurisdictions threatened Wednesday, raising worries they might be in violation of a federal law barring places from enacting policies that block communication with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Among those jurisdictions in the crosshairs are Chicago, New York City, Los Angeles and the entire states of California, Illinois and Oregon. In total, the 23 jurisdictions received more than $39 million in fiscal year 2016 funds from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program — which Sessions is now threatening to put at risk.

Immigration legislation Senators from both parties started a fresh search for compromise on immigration Wednesday, a day after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said that he had pulled back an offer of $25 billion for President Trump’s border wall with Mexico. Meanwhile, the White House announced that it will release legislative framework on immigration Monday. “The president wants to lead on this issue,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said. ‘Safe room’ saves 40 in attack on charity Islamic State gunmen stormed the Jalalabad, Afghanistan, offices of a British charity Wednesday, killing four people and wounding at least 26, officials said. The toll could have been much higher in the nine-hour gunbattle between militants and soldiers, but it appears that 40 people at the Save the Children charity were able to hide in a “safe room” and remain undiscovered. Among the four killed were two staffers of the NGO, a security guard who also worked for Save the Children and an Afghan soldier. (TWP/AP)

policies that violate the law. He asked for a new bevy of documents — including “any orders, directives, instructions, or guidance to your law enforcement employees” — and said the department would subpoena the materials if necessary. That threat escalates the department’s effort, as it could have the courts compelling jurisdictions to turn over documents that they didn’t provide voluntarily. Several mayors boycotted a planned White House meeting Wednesday, with New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeting that he skipped it after Trump’s Justice Department “decided to renew their racist assault on our immigrant communities.”

Trump seeks global reset In Davos, he takes aim at the perception that U.S. opposes free trade ECONOMY The Trump administration arrived in the Swiss ski town of Davos on Wednesday with a clear message for world leaders and executives: “America first” doesn’t mean America alone. President Trump, accompanied by 10 Cabinet members and other top advisers, is trying to fight the global perception that the U.S. is anti-globalization and

against free trade. The Trump team has come to Davos for the World Economic Forum to take a victory lap after passage of a major reduction in U.S. taxes and a rollback in regulations. His camp sees this as a prime opportunity for Trump to be a great salesman, touting the country’s economic success and encouraging foreign businesses to invest more in the U.S. Trump and Co. point to the record highs in the stock market and growth topping 3 percent in the past two quarters as evidence that his policies are working for

America and the world. Resetting global perceptions of Trump is likely to be difficult. Thousands of protesters gathered in Zurich, the closest major town to Davos, saying, “Trump not welcome.” Protesters have also attempted to get into the heavily guarded conference in Davos. Even other world leaders have openly made jabs at Trump. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi didn’t mention the U.S. by name, but his lengthy defense of globalization was widely seen as a message directed at Trump. HEATHER LONG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Since Dolly’s birth in 1996, scientists have cloned nearly two dozen kinds of mammals, including dogs, cats, pigs, cows

and polo ponies, and have also created human embryos with this method. But until now, they have been unable to make babies this way in primates, the category that includes monkeys, apes and people. “The barrier of cloning primate species is now overcome,” said Muming Poo of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shanghai. Facebook’s dark side Can the company prevent the problems that roiled it during the 2016 campaign? BUSINESS Mark Zuckerberg’s crusade to fix Facebook this year is beginning with a startling retreat. The social network, its chief executive said, would step back from its role in choosing the news that 2 billion users see on its site every month. The company is too “uncomfortable” to make such decisions in a world that has become so divided, Zuckerberg explained. The move was one result of a tumultuous 18-month struggle by Facebook to come to grips with its dark side, interviews with 11 current and former executives show. As outsiders criticized the social network’s harmful side effects, such as the spread of disinformation and violent imagery, vigorous internal debates played out over how forthcoming to be about Russian meddling on its platform during the 2016 election, and how to fight the perception that Facebook is politically biased. Whether Zuckerberg’s proposed changes can address these issues will soon be tested with another major election only 10 months away. Right now, the company is not confident that it can prevent the problems that roiled Facebook during the 2016 presidential campaign, a top executive acknowledged. “I can’t make a final assessment, other than we are

substantially better today in light of the experience than we were a year ago,” said Elliot Schrage, Facebook’s vice president for communications, policy and marketing. Some current and former executives say Facebook has not fully owned up to the negative consequences of its tremendous power. At the heart of the predicament is the very technology that makes the social network work, they said. “The problem with Facebook’s whole position is that the algorithm exists to maximize attention, and the best way to do that is to make people angry and afraid,” said Roger McNamee, a Facebook investor and mentor to Zuckerberg. McNamee and others — including the company’s first president, its former head of growth and Zuckerberg’s former speechwriter — have criticized the company in harsh terms. “If they demote stories that get a lot of likes, but drive people toward posts that generate conversation, they may be driving people toward conversation that isn’t positive,” said Sandy Parakilas, a former Facebook privacy operations manager. Altering the formula might diminish what made Facebook successful in the first place — a risk Zuckerberg and his team have said they are willing to take.

Facebook’s mishaps Trending Topics: The company first faced accusations that it excluded conservative media outlets from the Trending Topics list of top stories in 2016. Executives debated whether they should be more transparent about how the algorithm worked, but ultimately shared no details. Fake news: By October 2016, Facebook had identified 5.8 million fake accounts, some of which had spread phony news reports. It also discovered that 126 million Americans were exposed to Russian disinformation through posts. Ads: Facebook also found evidence of 3,000 ads created by a Russian “troll farm.” An estimated 10 million users saw the ads. The company initially did not disclose details and the reach of the ads to Congress, but has now promised to publish all political ads going forward. (TWP)

“One of the discoveries that the election in particular really demonstrated was, at the same time that we were making investments in positive new experiences, we were underinvesting in the tools and oversights to protect against inappropriate, abusive and exploitative experiences,” Schrage said. That insight led to changes this month to revamp Facebook’s

news feed. Posts shared by family and close friends will now rank above content from news organizations and brands, Facebook said. On Friday, the company said it is also going to let users vote on which news organizations are the most trustworthy, diminishing its own role in the distribution of news. On Monday, Samidh Chakrabarti, Facebook’s product manager for civic engagement, made another surprising admission in a blog post, writing that social media can “spread misinformation and corrode democracy.” Much is at stake for Facebook as it tries to fix itself. The company is the fifth most valuable in the U.S. and one of the world’s biggest distributors of news. The chorus of criticism threatens to demoralize its workforce and spur regulators to use a stronger hand. The focus on quality control could come at the cost of growth and disappoint investors. But perhaps the most worrisome issue for the company is that it will spend a year trying to clean up its act — and the abuses will continue. “They are looking for a safe approach,” said Jay Rosen, a journalism professor at New York University. “But sometimes you can be in a situation where there is no safe route out.” ELIZABETH

POLITICS President Trump said Wednesday he is “looking forward” to testifying before special counsel Robert Mueller and that he would speak under oath. “I would love to do it, and I would like to do it as soon as possible,” Trump said at the White House. “I would do it under oath, absolutely.” The president suggested he was being investigated for obstruction of justice as part of the Russia investigation because he was “fighting back” and again reiterated that there was “no collusion” between his campaign and Moscow. The president suggested the interview could take place in the next two or three weeks. Mueller’s team has told Trump’s lawyers it wants to question the president about the firing of national security adviser Mike Flynn and FBI Director James Comey. The investigators also have asked witnesses in recent weeks about Trump’s attempts to oust Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Trump also said he didn’t recall asking Andrew McCabe — then acting FBI director — whom he voted for during an Oval Office talk last year, as The Washington Post reported. “I don’t think I did,” Trump said. “I don’t know what’s the big deal with that. I would ask you who you voted for. … I don’t remember asking him that question.” JOSH DAWSEY AND

Over seven days, more than 150 women and girls described their abuse by Larry Nassar.

Nassar gets 40-175 years LANSING, MICH. Disgraced former Michigan State and USA Gymnastics team physician Larry Nassar was sentenced to a state prison term of 40 to 175 years Wednesday, bringing an end to a marathon sentencing hearing that featured statements from more than 150 girls and women who said he sexually abused them. The sentence, which is part of a plea deal in which Nassar, 54, admitted to 10 sexual assault charges, comes on top of a 60year federal sentence he faces for child pornography crimes he pleaded guilty to last year. Before his sentencing, Nassar offered a brief apology. That was quickly eclipsed when Judge Rosemarie Aquilina read from a letter Nassar wrote the court last week in which he said “my treatments worked,” termed some victims’ accounts “fabricated”

and asserted, “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.” The judge addressed Nassar. “It was not treatment ... it was not medical,” Aquilina said. “I wouldn’t send my dogs to you, sir.” She then issued her sentence, saying: “I’ve just signed your death warrant.” The hea ri ng i n L a nsi ng

— which was expected to last four days and feature 88 victims’ statements — ultimately spanned seven days as dozens more came forward to confront Nassar. On Monday, USA Gymnastics, whose former chief executive resigned in March over the Nassar case, said that three board members comprising its executive

leadership had also resigned. On Tuesday, the NCAA, which had remained silent on the case, sent Michigan State a letter regarding potential rules violations, and AT&T became the latest sponsor to drop USA Gymnastics. Michigan State President Lou Anna Simon has resisted calls to resign, and the school’s board of trustees has maintained its support of her leadership, but school officials last week acquiesced to requests from victims and their attorneys for an independent review of the university’s culpability for Nassar’s crimes. The state Attorney General’s office has agreed to conduct the inquiry. Victims have said they complained about Nassar’s conduct to Michigan State athletics officials as far back as 1997, and in 2014 an investigation by the school’s Title IX office cleared Nassar.

Wall, Beal ‘embrace’ criticisms The Wizards fell to 26-21 with Monday’s blowout loss to the Mavericks, the team’s 11th defeat against a sub-.500 team this season. Afterward, Mavs guard J.J. Smith said he’d been told that teammates talk behind Wall and Bradley Beal’s backs, accusing the stars of being selfish. Wall and Beal addressed the criticisms Tuesday in TV interviews when they were announced as All-Star reserves. “We embrace it,” Beal said on NBC Sports Washington. “Nobody is more upset than we are in ourselves.” Wall said on TNT: “It’s up to us as leaders to lead our team.” (THE WASHINGTON POST)

ESPN reported that NBA lawyer Dan Spillane set 1 percent as the league’s price to become a partner in legalized betting. Spillane said the league wants fans to be able to make bets on smartphones and at kiosks. The U.S. Supreme Court is considering a case that could let individual states legalize sports betting at casinos and racetracks. ETC … Did you know that African penguins like to be petted? Don’t take our word for it: Try it yourself at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore. The zoo has been home to a colony of African penguins since 1967. For most of that time, a moat or a pool kept the penguins out of the reach of visitors. But when the penguins moved to a new enclosure a few years ago, the zoo began offering Penguin Encounters, 30-minute behind-the-scenes tours that

allow visitors to get up close and personal with its “penguin ambassadors.” The seven penguins who currently live in the zoo’s so-called Penguin Embassy are all female and range in age from 2-year-old Eddie to 9-year-old Winnie. The penguins are chosen for their temperament: Sarah Talbot, an animal keeper who leads the Penguin Encounter tours, says “some of them are like dogs in a penguin suit.” And they’ve got plenty of personality: Eddie is the

most rambunctious and curious, while the slightly older penguins, such as Lilly and Peach, are calmer and more responsive to attention. While petting is encouraged, visitors aren’t allowed to pick up

the penguins — touch them in the wrong place and you’ll find out why. “There’d be a lot of pecking involved,” Talbot warns. One of the most common questions, Talbot says, is whether visitors can feed the penguins.

“You can hold a fish in front of them, but nothing’s going to happen,” she replies. For example, Winnie will only eat fish given to her by one particular keeper. You can, however, watch the penguins feast. If you make reservations for the morning Penguin Encounter, arrive early for the daily 10:30 a.m. feeding, when dozens of birds cluster on Rock Island and keepers feed them whole fish by hand. The afternoon feeding is at 3:30 p.m., an hour after the day’s last Penguin Encounter ends. FRITZ HAHN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Aaron Tveit gets around like greased lightning. The New York City-based actor and singer starred on Broadway in “Catch Me if You Can” and as FBI agent Mike Warren on USA Network’s “Graceland.” He played the charismatic Enjolras in the 2012 film adaptation of “Les Miserables” and Danny Zuko in 2016’s “Grease: Live” musical on Fox. Or maybe you just know him as the handsome one’s cousin on “Gossip Girl.” Tveit will be showing off more of his chops this weekend during a pair of concerts at Wolf Trap filled with show tunes and pop songs. BRYANNA CAPPADONA (EXPRESS) How do you construct each concert and choose your setlists? I have an amazing musical director named Brian Perry. He and I basically bounce ideas back and forth. There’s a certain amount of wanting to perform the songs [audiences] expect me to perform from the shows I’ve been in. I try to do them in a different way or see if there’s an interesting spin I can put on them. And then from there, basically, I see what other songs [I can do], either from [stage] shows or pop songs that I can sing in an interesting way. Then I look to see how it becomes a show. Because I don’t like to necessarily just sing for the sake of singing — I like the entire setlist and evening to tell a story. Can you give an example of a song you put an interesting spin on? The first concerts I ever did years ago, I ended up doing as an encore Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” I thought it was this crazy idea, and I didn’t know if it was going to totally crash and burn, but it ended up being one of the most successful things of the evening. The audience just thought it was hilarious. Since then, I’ve been trying to think outside the box and find things

like that to bring in to the setlist that may be totally unexpected. What’s your go-to song that you really love to perform? There’s this song I performed last year at Wolf Trap — and it’s still in the setlist this year, but in a bit of a different way — called “Fight the Dragons” from the musical “Big Fish.” Brian and I just loved the tune of it and the message it’s telling. It’s about this dad who’s living this fantastic life and explaining to his kid, “It looks like I’m doing all of these things, but they’re all for you.” I have a very close relationship with my dad, so it means a lot to me. You’ve done theater, network dramas, live TV musicals and Hollywood productions. How do you approach each? From my standpoint, it all kind of comes from a very actor-y place. You look at the medium, how the story is going to be told, and gauge your performance based on that. Being onstage is a whole different beast. You have to hit the back of the house and, if you’re in a big theater, the last row — there’s a certain amount of energy you have to give to [theater]. And being onstage is the hardest because you have to

do it eight times a week and find a way to make it new every night. But also it’s the most rewarding because you get an immediate response from the audience. I’m very lucky that I’ve gotten to do all these different things, so one doesn’t get tiresome or stale. Do you have a medium preference? Just from a logistical standpoint, you feel most like a real person on a television show because it’s Monday through Friday. Even though the hours can be long and

sometimes your Friday goes until three o’clock in the morning, you still get Saturday and Sunday off. And that’s something that’s so difficult about working onstage — when everybody else is off on Friday and Saturday, you’re just going to work to do a bunch of shows. So it’s hard socially, it’s hard on your body. But there’s nothing like being onstage, so it’s a big trade-off all over. The Barns at Wolf Trap, 1635 Trap Road, Vienna; Fri. & Sat., 8 p.m., sold out.

Muriel Bowser D.C. MAYOR

If anyone knows the city like the back of their hand, it’s Muriel Bowser. The Washington native has spent her entire political career in her hometown, from her first election to the Advisory Neighborhood Commission in Ward 4 in 2004 to her current gig as D.C.’s. mayor. Has she gotten sick of the District and thought of heading somewhere new? “I already live in the best city in the world,” says Bowser, 45. “Where would I go?” The mayor’s dream day, in the one and only city where her dream day could unfold, is pretty much an everyday reality for her. And what could be more perfect than that? I like to wake up early. I usually make some coffee at home and read The Washington Post or watch “Morning Joe.” I like a great breakfast spot not far from where I live called Highlands on 14th Street. Highlands is a pretty terrific place. They have shrimp and grits and fantastic waffles. It’s become a pretty popular

breakfast spot over the years. If I can in the course of my workday, I’d like to visit a D.C. public school. That’s always the highlight of my day: getting to stop by and visit schools in all eight wards of the city. The kids love to show off all the different rooms in their schools. We were really

Then you can go to Le Diplomate for a great dinner. I don’t get to get there a lot, but I was just there meeting a friend for dinner. It was one of the days where it was single-digit temperatures, and it was full of people. People had been cooped up for too long and wanted to get out and enjoy their neighbors and friends. I had the warm shrimp salad. I eat a lot of shrimp! I like to be in bed by 10:30 p.m., but in the evening I’ll probably have a stop at a community meeting. Frequently when I do that, I try to see what’s happening in different neighborhoods and on different corridors. Recently I was at a community meeting in Ward 7 close to the Minnesota Avenue Metro station. So I stopped in to see some old friends at Sala Thai. I got to know them really well when they opened [one of their new locations]. It’s fantastic. You’re going to love this: I get the pottery shrimp there. I’m trying to have less red meat in my life. Shrimp is a good protein. (AS TOLD TO LORI McCUE)

weekendpass really technical and challenging to pull off, but when you do, the crowd goes wild. And really big wheelies and walking wheelies, which is when you do a wheelie and land it on the back two tires and walk it forward. The whole time you’re walking a Monster Jam truck, all you see is the sky. It’s pretty awesome.

Collete Davis will take the wheel of the Wonder Woman monster truck this weekend.

Q+A | COLLETE DAVIS

Nothin’ gets in her way When Collete Davis straps into her 10,000-pound, 12-foot-tall monster truck, she’s a fearless adversary with one thing on her mind. “All that’s going through my head is all the fun I’m about to have,” the Los Angeles-based driver says. Oh, and beating the guys. Which the 24-year-old has a solid record of doing. Davis, fittingly, will be driving the maroon and gold Wonder Woman truck during the Monster Jam Triple Threat Series at Capital One Arena this weekend. Davis came off-road to talk to Express about being a woman in a male-dominated industry and those mind-boggling stunts she does in her massive truck. ANGELA HAUPT (FOR EXPRESS) You started out as a professional race car driver and added monster trucks to your repertoire last year. Why motor sports? I was always curious about how stuff worked — I would take apart remote controls to see what was inside them, which led to me taking apart computers and lawn mowers and, eventually, car motors. When I was around 13, I was like, “Hey, I love working around cars, I love the science

and tech that goes into them — why not try racing them?” I sat in a go-kart for the first time, did a few laps and completely fell in love. It had the engineering side of things and my love for competition all in one sport, and I was hooked. Last year, I had the opportunity to test a Monster Jam truck for the first time, and the whole sport just blew my mind. The competition is incredible.

We’re not just racing; we’re also competing in stunts with these insane trucks. Everything about it captivated me from the very beginning. What are some of your favorite stunts? I’m working on doing handstands with the truck — you’re literally putting the entire truck and all its weight on the front two wheels and doing a handstand with it. It’s

RICHARD H SHUTE

What can people expect at Monster Jam this weekend? It’s mind-blowing to see what we can do in these crazy trucks. And we’re also going head-to-head in the Monster Jam Speedsters and ATVs, so it’s pretty intense and there’s a lot of action packed into one show. The competition is really tight, and everyone is neck and neck with each other. How has being a woman in a traditionally male field affected your success? I’m very used to it. I went to school for mechanical engineering, I was in Silicon Valley as an entrepreneur and I’ve been in racing for almost a decade, competing against guys. But I realized very early that other girls out there don’t think they can do or be whatever they want to be. They don’t know that it’s OK to like science and technology and to go after something in a male-dominated industry, like racing. It’s been a huge mission just to get myself out there and compete in motor sports at the highest level, and to tell other girls that they can do it, too — and not just compete, but get out there and win. What are your best words of wisdom for other women? Find something you love and go after it every single day full-throttle — and believe in yourself first. Before anyone else believed I could become a professional race car driver or a monster truck driver, I believed in myself. You have to be your No. 1 fan, your No. 1 motivator, and that will help you get through all of it.

Taken together, this national fixation on a group that makes up just 1.7 percent of the population points to a larger truth, says Paul Chaat Smith, one of the exhibit’s curators. “What I have come to believe is that Americans are emphatic about not wanting to ignore the central fact that, for the United States to become the most powerful nation in the history of the world, it required the dispossession of Native American people,” Smith says. Some of the commercial objects on display seem tasteful, while others traffic in offensive stereotypes, he says. The officially licensed sports team apparel in the exhibit — including a baby bib embroidered with the Washington Redskins logo — represents the co-opting of Native American culture that has generated the most debate in recent years.

It’s up to visitors to decide for themselves which examples on display are OK and which aren’t, Guarinello says. “You can’t fixate on the Washington football team. It’s part of a larger phenomenon, and there’s a lot of ways to feel about it,” she says. “We want to invite people into this space to have the discussion and to start noticing things.” In a video portion of the exhibit, Smith argues that Thanksgiving is another example of Americans remembering American Indians in an attempt to grapple with the country’s bloody past. A historical footnote for 200 years, Thanksgiving grew in popularity as a national holiday in the early 20th century, as Americans began wrestling with “this very difficult truth about the United States — that the country is a national project that came about at great expense to native people,” Smith narrates in the video. EXHIBIT Butter, motor oil, sunscreen, baking powder — these are just a few of the rather ordinary objects on display in “Americans,” a new long-term exhibit at the National Museum of the American Indian. Curators picked these everyday products because they, like hundreds more, feature images of American Indians, often for no clear reason. The practice is so common that most people don’t give it a second thought — or even a first, exhibition manager Elena Guarinello says. “It’s a phenomenon unlike any other, where one particular segment of society is subject to this kind of obsession and fascination,” she says. “And it’s been going on since before the country began.” The exhibit points out that American Indian names have been given to military helicopters and missiles, more than half of the country’s states and countless cities. Plus, American Indians play a starring role

5 Indians remains resonant today because “that’s what we aspire to be. That’s sort of our best selves,” Smith says in the video. In three side galleries, “Americans” highlights and reinterprets historical events involving American Indians. One gallery addresses the common belief that Pocahontas saved the life of English soldier John Smith when he was about to be executed by members of her tribe. That probably didn’t happen, exhibit cocurator Cecile Ganteaume says. “John Smith wrote about that incident after Pocahontas was already famous, and he had written about similar scenes happening to him in the Middle East and

other places in his travels, so he was a bit of a fabulist,” she says. The soldier’s version of the events has since been memorialized in poems, songs and a Disney movie. The story’s staying power may stem from the fact that it captures larger truths about Pocahontas’ importance, at least metaphorically, Ganteaume says. “If she didn’t save the life of Captain Smith, she did save the life of the Jamestown Colony, which is the place where democratically elected representative government started in the United States,” says Ganteaume, explaining that Pocahontas’ marriage to an English settler and their subsequent tour of England

The Washington Auto Show is back with more car-fueled fun — and these five dream rides that could be just the ticket for you You are allowed — nay, encouraged — to say “vroom, vroom, VROOOM” a lot at the Washington Auto Show. The annual celebration of cars looks like what would happen if a dealership got superpowers. In addition to the piles of cars to ogle, sit in and/or covet, you can also partake in “ride ’n drives” (like test drives but you don’t have to pretend to want to buy the car) and zoom around the indoor, off-road track in a variety of Land Rovers and one Jaguar (someone who knows what they’re doing will handle the driving). There’s plenty to see without a seat belt, too: Local sports stars will be around, auto experts will offer tours and you can watch the five-day Hands-On Contest, as folks compete to see who can keep a body part on a Hyundai Tucson SEL the longest to claim it. You might not walk out with a new ride, but if you’re in the market, here are five cars worth considering while you’re at the show. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS) Walter E. Washington Convention Center, 801 Mount Vernon Place NW; Fri. through Feb. 4, various times, $12.

Best Car for Being Environmentally Friendly While Looking Awesome Do you want to save the planet but also go really, really fast? The BMW i8 coupe goes from 0 to 60 in four seconds and has a top speed of 156 mph, plus it’s a plug-in hybrid — so you can get to Whole Foods way before the Saturday morning crowds. The car travels up to 330 miles on one charge, which means you can head to your off-the-grid weekend cabin with no worries. Actually, this car is probably nicer than your off-the-grid weekend cabin, so maybe just bring sleeping bags and camp out in the trunk.

THURSDAY | 01.25.2018 | EXPRESS | 27

weekendpass Best Car for When You’ve Had Enough Snow Days, Thank You The Kia Sorento Ski Gondola kicks wheels to the curb, instead using Dominator rubber tracks for that they-didn’t-plow-the-side-streets driving. Instead of white-knuckling the steering wheel, let the autonomous system take care of the driving while you sit BACKWARD, sip cocoa and wave merrily at the idiot behind you who doesn’t have his headlights on. Unfortunately, it’s just a concept car for now — but the instant Kia puts it on the market, schoolkids everywhere better be ready to say goodbye to weatherrelated closings.

Best Car for Quietly Knowing You’re Better Than Everyone Else

Best Car for Your Brand We thought about getting RollsRoyce to custom-make us a Dawn, with the Express logo blazing on the doors and our bylines embroidered on the convertible’s headrests (dibs on shotgun!). Then we realized we would probably get in trouble for putting a $400,000 car on our monthly expense reports. Maybe you have a better cash flow, in which case the Dawn can be customized in nearly every way. They’ll paint, stitch and carve pretty much anything you want anywhere you want. Don’t think of it as a car. Think of it as a great way to advertise your side hustle.

What measures riches? It’s not the money in your bank account. And it’s certainly not the love and support of family and friends. In the end, you’re not rich until you have something no one else has. You can be one of those people — well, one of 100 of those people. The manualequipped Aston Martin V12 Vantage S goes fast and looks pretty, but the real draw is that only 100 were made for the U.S. market. Sure, the one at the auto show isn’t TECHNICALLY for sale, but doesn’t everything have its price? Once it’s yours, just take out the owners of the other 99 and you’ll be the Highlander of the automotive world.

Best Car for Green-Shaming Hybrid Drivers Oh, you have a hybrid? Adorable. You realize they still emit the automotive equivalent of farts into the atmosphere, right? In contrast, the Toyota Mirai is a fuel cell vehicle, and its only emission is water vapor, which has been scientifically proven to not be a big deal to Earth. You just have to fill the car up at a hydrogen station. Once you do that (and you’ll probably have to be in California when you do), you can go up to 300 miles on a single tank. The car also has a number of hydrogen-specific safety features, so if you get in a crash your car won’t explode in a Hindenburg-style blaze of not-glory.

Like all bad boys, “Step Up’s” Tyler Gage (Channing Tatum) loves to dance.

‘Step Up’ We will forever be grateful for the movie “Step Up” (hang with us) because it brought to our attention a young man named Channing Tatum, who can dance a little bit. Now you can see the 2006 movie on the big screen either again or for the first time. Tatum plays Tyler Gage, a bad boy who discovers love and awesomeness through the power of dance. In addition to the movie, there will be a first look (with behind-the-scenes footage) at “Step Up: High Water,” a new series on YouTube Red. Come in costume — just be sure to have your six-pack abs ready and flexed. Various locations; Tue., 7 p.m., various prices, go to fathomevents.com for details and participating theaters.

‘Zer’

Seen “The Disaster Artist” yet? You should; it’s good. And now you have the chance to REALLY see it — with lots of live bonus features. Greg Sestero, co-star of “The Room,” the 2003 cult far-from-classic movie that last year’s “The Disaster Artist” is about, will attend to take questions and read from his memoir, the book that inspired the recent film. There will also be a behind-the-scenes documentary about the making of “The Room,” a live reading of parts of mastermind Tommy Wiseau’s first draft, a book signing — AND a screening of “The Disaster Artist.” It’s like a convention for people who love one particular, really terrible movie.

You can be one of the first people in the U.S. to see “Zer,” the story of a New Yorker who travels to his grandmother’s Kurdish village in Turkey after she sings him a mysterious song on her deathbed. While the movie is about a people most of us know only through headlines, the film deals with a universal truth: our history, both remembered and forgotten, shapes our present selves. Writer-director Kazim Oz will take part in Q&As after this weekend’s premiere screenings.

Judging by the title, fans of Lana Del Rey expected “Lust for Life” would reveal a cheerier side of the singer known for her melancholic Americana pop. Though she did bust out a smile on the cover of the album, released last summer, the music didn’t stray far from her sonic wheelhouse. What made a difference was the varied cast of collaborators Del Rey brought in for the project, including Stevie Nicks, A$AP Rocky and The Weeknd. The Wood Brothers Six albums in, The Wood Brothers have produced their most diverse recording yet. Rather than stick to one sonic theme or story, as the trio have often done in the past, singerguitarist Oliver Wood, bassist Chris Wood (of experimental jazz group Medeski Martin & Wood) and multi-instrumentalist Jano Rix let the music take them wherever it led. Piano man Jon Cleary is from England but he might as well be a native of New Orleans. Since moving to the Crescent City as a teenager in 1980, Cleary has made the city his home — and his muse. His music, which pulls from institutions like Allen Toussaint, The Meters and Professor Longhair, makes it sound like he’s lived there all his life. Cleary covers the songs that inspired him to move there on his albums — like 2017’s “Live at Chickie Wah Wah” — and at his shows, and he keeps that spirit alive through his originals. Cleary is finishing up a new album as he heads to D.C. with his backing band in tow.

Object Collection: ‘It’s All True’ Perhaps no band has a higher place in the D.C. punk pantheon than Fugazi, but there are better forms of tribute than yet another “Waiting Room” cover. With “It’s All True,” the Brooklyn-based performance collective Object Collection has created an experimental “opera-in-suspension” from Fugazi’s extensive live archives. But rather than use the band’s songs, the collective has turned the archive’s flotsam and jetsam — feedback, noodling, pre-show announcements, hecklers — into a 100-minute avant-garde experience. Sundance focuses on female icons FILM Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Jane Fonda and Gloria Allred are trailblazers, each defying expectations of their time and becoming powerhouse representatives of women — and all are getting a spotlight this year in three films playing at the Sundance Film Festival.

Ginsburg soldiered through sexist obstacles to become the second female Supreme Court justice in history. Allred devoted her energy to the often thankless task of taking on powerful men like Bill Cosby and Donald Trump on behalf of powerless women. And Fonda eschewed a life of comfort as the beautiful daughter of Hollywood royalty to become a self-actualized activist. Director Susan Lacy’s “Jane Fonda in Five Acts,” an HBO

Ginsburg, Fonda and Allred are celebrated in three documentaries

as she says at age 80, becoming a “fully realized Jane.” In the case of Ginsburg, “RBG” directors Julie Cohen and Betsy West saw an opportunity to put a spotlight the associate justice. The film looks at her childhood,

her exceptionally supportive husband, some of her early triumphs for women and, yes, that workout you may have heard about. (Viewers see Ginsburg holding a plank like a boss.) “RGB” was acquired by Magnolia Pictures and Participant Media at the festival. For “Seeing Allred” — a Netflix original out Feb. 9 — Sophie Sartain and Roberta Grossman started documenting women’s rights attorney Gloria Allred long before #MeToo and Hollywood’s sexual misconduct became the story of the moment — and before the Bill Cosby accusers received attention. Allred told the Park City, Utah, crowd Saturday: “This is the year that women’s voices have been heard.” LINDSEY BAHR (AP)

‘Big Little Lies’ Season 2 adds Meryl Streep to cast

Elton John announces final three-year retirement tour

Latin pop star and actor Enrique Iglesias is suing Universal Music Group in a dispute over how much he’s paid for songs played on streaming music services. The lawsuit filed Wednesday in Miami federal court claims that Universal is paying Iglesias far less than the 50 percent royalty rate required under his contract for streamed music. Iglesias says Universal is paying him a rate based on sales of physical music, such as CDs, even though there are far fewer overhead costs. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages from Universal, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment. (AP)

Meryl Streep has joined the highly anticipated second season of HBO’s hit series “Big Little Lies.” The Academy Award-winning actress will star alongside Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, who, respectively, portray Monterey, Calif., mothers Madeline Mackenzie and Celeste Wright. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Streep will play Mary Louise Wright, the mother of Celeste’s husband, Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgard). “Big Little Lies” nabbed eight Emmy awards last fall and four Golden Globes earlier this month, including best actress and best supporting actor trophies for Kidman and Skarsgard. (EXPRESS)

Elton John is retiring from the road after his upcoming three-year global tour, capping nearly 50 years on stages around the world. John made the announcement at an event in New York. His final tour, dubbed “Farewell Yellow Brick Road,” begins in September and will consist of more than 300 shows in North America, Europe, Asia, South America and Australia, before wrapping up in 2021. John’s Las Vegas residency ends in May after six years. The legendary musician will perform two concerts in D.C. at Capital One Arena on Sept. 21 and 22. Tickets go on sale Feb. 2.

The number of copies of Michael Wolff’s “Fire and Fury” that have been sold — in hardcover, e-books and audio formats — since its Jan. 5 release, according to publisher Henry Holt & Co. As of Wednesday, Wolff’s tell-all about the Trump administration remained No. 1 on Amazon. Holt president and publisher Stephen Rubin said an initial print run of 150,000 proved insufficient, and only over the past week did Amazon have hardcovers immediately on hand. (AP)

trending “Not the headline I was expecting to read today but here we are.” @PETERSLATTERY3, reacting to the Vice article “The Guy Who Played Barney the Dinosaur Now Runs a Tantric Sex Business.” Vice published the extensive piece Tuesday about David Joyner, the man in the Barney suit from 1991 to late 2001. He told Vice he had to put his tantric interests on hold while he was Barney because of his contract. Joyner started his current practice in 2004. His website is filled with testimonials from clients with titles like “receive the gifts” and “reboot me.” Tantric experts quoted in the article said that Joyner’s method — which involves penetrative sex — is highly unusual in a client-practitioner setting. The news took social media by surprise. “That’s the most 2018 thing I’ve ever heard,“ @TjD1534 tweeted.

“I have never seen or heard of anyone going to Mattress Firm. It’s a front.”

KING JOHNSON, a child who took issue with the way he was taught about Christopher Columbus. In his journal entry he wrote: “You said something wrong and I can’t listen when I hear lies,” because American Indians discovered the Americas, not Columbus. The teacher wrote that she was disappointed and Johnson just replied, “Ok.”

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You may have to work harder today to achieve only a routine result, but this is because of forces you cannot avoid. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Your attempt to show off is likely to backfire. You must be operating from a set of motives that are purer than that. ARIES (March 21-April 19) What lies ahead may give you pause, but by day’s end you should be able to embrace a new situation with confidence. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You’re going to have to fit in a few last-minute tasks before getting on with the major activity of the day. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You can break free of any restraints today and enjoy a fuller exploration of the options facing you. CANCER (June 21-July 22) It’s best for you to ignore certain developments today until you can consider them from an entirely different point of view. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You are heading to a place that can provide you with many new opportunities, but are you ready to leave other things behind? VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You may feel encumbered, put-upon or out of sorts during the first part of the day. Later, you’ll be running on all cylinders.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Working solo today, you will accomplish something very special to you when all is said and done — even though others may not appreciate what it means.

TODAY: We have plenty of sun, but temperatures struggle with a cold and very dry air mass in place. Highs stall in the low to mid-40s, with breezes from the northwest at 10 to 15 mph adding to the chill. With mostly clear skies and light winds tonight, temperatures should drop below freezing area-wide.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Someone from your past is looking over your shoulder today to make sure that you don’t repeat any errors made in those days of long ago. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You may require some special attention today in order to shake the blues. Once a certain friend ministers to you, all will be well.

HOW TO REACH US

TO PLACE A CLASSIFIED AD:

Armie Hammer’s “Sorry to Bother You” co-stars said at a Sundance panel they mistakenly thought the actor was giving out free marijuana on set. “The first time I saw him, he gave me some weed,” Omari Hardwick said. Director Boots Riley said Hammer was later seeking Hardwick because he’d asked him to hold his weed. Tessa Thompson then added: “I thought you were so generous. I heard you were on set giving away lots of pot.” (EXPRESS)

Darren Aronofsky and Suki Waterhouse were photographed out together Monday at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, sparking rumors of a possible romance. A source told Us Weekly that the 48-year-old filmmaker and the 26-year-old actress/model met up on two consecutive nights. “Darren is very into her and was telling friends how sweet and hot she was on his plane ride back,” the insider added. Last fall, Aronofsky split from Jennifer Lawrence, who had starred in several feature films alongside Bradley Cooper, Waterhouse’s ex-boyfriend. (EXPRESS)
