Good news: Eels in the Thames are not, in fact, high on cocaine
Alligators in a North Carolina swamp have proven it was no fluke last winter when they survived a cold snap by freezing in place. It happened again Monday at The Swamp Park in Ocean Isle Beach; this time, more alligators joined in, park manager George Howard says in a video posted Tuesday. “All our alligators in ice here,” Howard says in the video. “Eighteen American alligators are thinking ahead as they poke their noses through the ice.” (AP)
Deputies and animal services officers in Garland, Texas, responded to a call from a homeowner who found a large flock of sheep in their yard, UPI reported Thursday. A dozen sheep of assorted sizes and colors were removed by Dallas County authorities. The remarkable amount of cocaine in the River Thames in London is probably not making the eels who live there high, the Independent reported Tuesday. Research conducted in Italy last summer suggested that keeping eels in water containing cocaine could make them hyperactive. But while London’s water contains unusually high amounts of cocaine, it is probably still not enough to harm the wildlife in it, the latest research indicates. (EXPRESS)

page three Daniel Snyder’s new yacht, the Lady S.
Redskins owner Daniel Snyder buys a $100M yacht with an Imax theater D.C. SPORTS BOG Redskins owner Daniel Snyder has already made his first major offseason acquisition. It’s a new $100 million superyacht, the Lady S, complete with an Imax theater. The Guardian reported that the 305-foot ship launched in the Netherlands in October and Snyder will take delivery in the spring. The yacht features a helipad, four VIP suites and facilities for golf, basketball, volleyball and soccer, according to manufacturer Feadship. The Imax theater is thought to be the first on a superyacht. “He wanted an Imax, that
was his main request,” Jan-Bart Verkuyl, chief executive of Feadship’s Royal Van Lent shipyard, Snyder told the Guardian of the yacht’s owner. An architect at the firm that helped design the ship said providing the Imax theater, which added $3 million to construction costs, made building the yacht “much more complicated,” the Guardian reported. Builders had to construct the theater, then the rest of the boat around it. “You couldn’t have sound from the Imax drifting into the cabins
next door and, more importantly, you couldn’t have the sound of the engines or vibrations coming into the Imax,” the architect said. “If they did we would not get the certification from Imax — and that was the most important thing for the owner.” Fans of the mediocre Redskins were less than thrilled when the news of Snyder’s purchase reached the internet. Danny Rouhier, a radio host for 106.7 The Fan, tweeted: “Don’t worry Redskins fans. Dan Snyder got everything he wanted on his new yacht. It’s all good. Sleep easy.” JACOB BOGAGE

Virginia reaches deal on coal ash cleanups
PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY
State’s largest utility will excavate ponds laden with heavy-metal waste
56%
“It’s a bunch of 2-year-olds, you know? Let’s figure out border security, and let’s get people to work.”
A man suspected of driving while intoxicated and causing a crash in Prince George’s County that left three young siblings dead was charged Thursday with vehicular manslaughter and other charges. Thomas Daniel Hawks, 27, of White Plains, Md., had a bloodalcohol concentration over twice the legal limit when he was driving home from a Redskins game the night of Dec. 30, prosecutors said. Three siblings were killed upon impact: Alexander and Rosalie Mejia, 5-year-old twins, and their 1-year-old brother Isaac. Their parents were hospitalized. (TWP)

VIRGINIA Virginia’s largest electric utility is backing a plan to excavate coal ash from unlined ponds after arguing for years that leaving the heavy metal-laden waste product in place was the best option. Gov. Ralph Northam, D, and a bipartisan group of lawmakers announced an agreement Thursday to require Dominion Energy to recycle or store in lined landfills 27 million cubic yards of coal ash currently located at four sites around the state. Officials said the plan would cost the average residential customer no more than $5 a month and annual cleanup costs would be capped at $225 million. Dominion, the state’s most politically powerful corporation, said it supported the agreement in a brief statement. The company did not elaborate on why it was changing positions after years of insisting that leaving the coal ash ponds in place and putting a cover over them was safe, economical, and the best available option. Environmentalists have long argued that unlined coal ash presented an unacceptable hazard. They cheered the deal as a big win for Virginia’s water ways that could help prompt other large utilities to follow suit. “Dominion is stepping out in

front and that’s encouraging, but Dominion is just one of many,” said Lisa Evans, senior counsel with the environmental group Earthjustice. U.S. coal plants produce about 100 million tons annually of ash and other waste, much of which ends up in unlined disposal ponds prone to leak. Last year, the Trump administration eased rules for handling toxic coal ash after utilities pushed back against regulations adopted under President Obama. Data released by utilities last year under an Obama-era EPA mandate showed widespread evidence of groundwater contamination at coal plants. Heightened levels of pollutants — including arsenic and radium — were
documented at plants in numerous states, including Virginia. A 2008 spill in Tennessee drew national attention to coal ash storage. In 2014, a pipe ruptured at a Duke Energy plant in North Carolina, polluting the Dan River with miles of sludge. “We can’t afford an environmental disaster in Virginia like the one in North Carolina,” Northam said. The agreement has broad support from a number of key lawmakers, including GOP House Speaker Kirk Cox. But there is still opposition. Democratic Del. Sam Rasoul said it “doesn’t seem fair at all” for ratepayers to have to pay to clean up Dominion’s pollution costs. ALAN SUDERMAN (AP)

THE DISTRICT D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser heralded the opening of the first medical marijuana dispensary east of the Anacostia River, adding that she hopes to see recreational marijuana dispensaries eventually open throughout the city. A host of city officials and marijuana entrepreneurs gathered Thursday to celebrate the launch of Anacostia Organics in the Southeast D.C. neighborhood, the sixth dispensary in the city. The new dispensary was made possible by 2017 legislation that gave preference to minorityowned businesses looking to enter the marijuana industry. Advocates say racial equity in the marijuana industry can help make amends for laws and policies that saw African-Americans disproportionately locked up for drug-related offenses. Linda Mercado Greene, the owner and chair of BCG Holdings Inc., the parent company for Anacostia Organics, said she spent five years trying to enter the marijuana market. She turned to members of the D.C. Council to expand a medical marijuana industry that had no retail outlets in Wards 7 and

Analysis warns system needs an overhaul or it will continue to languish TRANSPORTATION Metrobus and regional bus systems in the Washington area are too slow, too complex and increasingly threatened by competition, according to a new analysis. And the region’s bus network will continue to be hindered
unless a concerted effort is made to improve continuity among the various systems and prioritize bus travel through dedicated lanes and other measures, according to the analysis aimed at overhauling the network. TECHNOLOGY Robots aren’t replacing everyone, but a quarter of U.S. jobs will be severely disrupted as artificial intelligence accelerates the automation of existing work, according to a new Brookings Institution report. Thursday’s report from the Washington think tank says roughly 36 million Americans hold jobs with “high exposure” to automation — meaning at least 70 percent of their tasks could soon be performed by machines using current technology. Among those most likely to be affected are cooks, waiters and others in food services; short-haul truck drivers; and clerical office workers. “That population is going to need to upskill, reskill or change jobs fast,” said Mark Muro, a senior fellow at Brookings and lead author of the report. Muro said the timeline for the changes could be “a few years or it could be two decades.” But it’s likely that automation will happen more swiftly during the next economic downturn. Businesses are typically eager to implement cost-cutting technology as they lay off workers. Though the United States is in the middle of its second-longest expansion in history, many business leaders and economists

have suggested in surveys that the United States could slip into a recession in 2020. With new advances in artificial intelligence, it’s not just industrial and warehouse robots that will alter the American workforce. Self-checkout kiosks and computerized hotel concierges will do their part. Most jobs will change somewhat as machines take over routine tasks, but a majority of U.S. workers will be able to adapt to that shift without being displaced. The changes will hit hardest in smaller cities, especially those in the heartland and the Rust Belt, according to the Brookings report. The risk is highest

in Indiana and Kentucky, where some counties have nearly half the workforce employed in the labor-intensive manufacturing and transportation industries. The changes will also disproportionately affect the younger workers who dominate food services and other industries at highest risk for automation. The Brookings report analyzed each occupation’s automation potential based on research by the management consulting firm McKinsey. The jobs that will remain largely unscathed are those requiring advanced education along with interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence. MATT O’BRIEN (AP)
Scientists have found evidence of the deadly Ebola virus in a Miniopterus inflatus bat in Liberia, the first time the virus has been found in a bat in West Africa, researchers announced Thursday. The discovery represents a major step forward in understanding where human Ebola cases come from, one of the biggest unanswered questions surrounding these outbreaks, scientists said. Bats have been suspected of being a natural reservoir or animal host for Ebola, meaning the virus can live and grow inside the animals without harming them. Scientists caution that more research is needed. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

by declaring himself interim president Wednesday before demonstrators in Caracas. He said it was the only way to end the Maduro “dictatorship” in Venezuela, which has seen millions flee in recent years to escape sky-high inflation and food shortages. “We know that this will have consequences,” Guaido shouted before slipping away to an unknown location amid speculation that he would soon be arrested.
POLITICS A Senate committee has subpoenaed President Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen, his attorney said Thursday, and Cohen intends to comply with the interview demand related to the Russia investigation. The development came one day after Cohen postponed his public testimony to a House committee. Lanny Davis, a lawyer for Cohen, disclosed the subpoena from the Senate Intelligence Committee in a one-sentence statement, and later told The Associated Press in a text message that “we will comply and hope to agree upon reasonable terms, ground rules and a date.” Cohen is set to begin a threeyear prison sentence in March. The Senate committee did not immediately confirm the subpoena, but any interview with Cohen would almost certainly take place in private, in keeping with how the committee generally has conducted Russiarelated hearings. Cohen earlier this week delayed his Feb. 7 appearance before the House Committee on Oversight and Reform on the advice of his legal team, citing ongoing cooperation in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation and threats against his family. Trump, along with his attorney, Rudy Giuliani, has publicly urged the Justice Department to investigate Cohen’s father-in-law. MICHAEL R.

CARACAS, VENEZUELA All eyes were on Juan Guaido’s next step after the popular Venezuelan opposition leader declared he was temporarily assuming presidential powers in a high-stakes bid to unseat Nicolas Maduro, whose powerful loyalists went on the offensive Thursday in support of the embattled leader. Guaido has disappeared from public view since swearing before tens of thousands of cheering supporters to uphold the constitution and rid Venezuela of Maduro’s dictatorship, and his whereabouts remained shrouded in mystery Thursday. A defiant Maduro called home all Venezuelan diplomats from the United States and closed its embassy, a day after ordering all U.S. diplomats out of the country by the weekend. Washington has refused to comply, but ordered its nonessential staff to leave the tumultuous country, citing security concerns. The Trump administration says Maduro’s order isn’t legal because the U.S. no longer recognizes him as Venezuela’s legitimate leader. “They believe they have a colonial hold in Venezuela, where they decide what they want to do,” Maduro said in an address broadcast live on state TV. “You must fulfill my order from the government of Venezuela.” Tensions have soared between the two nations after Trump recognized opposition leader Juan Guaido, who claimed Wednesday to hold the presidency and vowed to remove Maduro. Attention has been on the military, a traditional arbiter of political disputes in Venezuela, as a critical indicator of whether the opposition will succeed in establishing a new government. 2020 race offers first for women
Sen. Kamala Harris
Economist says Warren to pitch new ‘wealth tax’
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand
ANALYSIS There has been only one time in U.S. political history that more than one woman was a candidate for the same party’s presidential nomination. It was during the 1972 campaign: Rep. Patsy Matsu Takemoto Mink, D-Hawaii, the first woman of color elected to Congress, ran against Shirley Chisholm in the Oregon primary. Mink dropped out after receiving 2 percent of the vote. When it comes to choosing someone for the most powerful government job in the land, voters have not had another chance to choose from multiple women in the major party races. Until now. Sen. Kamala Harris, Calif., was the fourth female Democrat to declare a bid for the White House, after Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, N.Y., Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Mass., and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Hawaii. The race offers a new chance to consider questions about hiring that have been raised in other fields. What happens when a woman is no longer the only one in a pool of candidates for a
leadership job? Experts on gender, politics and leadership say the multiple women running in the 2020 Democratic primary could help to normalize the idea of female presidential candidates — as opposed to them being cast as a novelty. And seeing multiple women on a debate stage rather than one woman amid a semicircle of men could help reinforce the individualism of female candidates, they said. “What this affords is for the voter to see the distinctiveness of the women,” said Deborah Walsh, the director of the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University. “We’re going to see the differences, and we’ve never had that opportunity before on the presidential stage.” Having more women in the race could make it more likely a woman gets nominated, and not just because of statistical probability. In 2016, three professors published preliminary data in the Harvard Business Review that showed when a woman is the only candidate in a pool of men,
Sen. Elizabeth Warren
there’s little statistical chance she’ll be hired. Based on both experimental studies and an analysis of university hiring data, the study found that when there were at least two women being considered, the odds of one of them getting hired went way up — some 79 times higher, the study found — a figure that goes far beyond the increased statistical chance of there simply being more women in the pool. The study, said Stefanie Johnson, a professor at the University of Colorado Boulder and one of its co-authors, is based on the theory of tokenism — that when there’s one woman in a group of men, she is often seen as being
Rep. Tulsi Gabbard
representative of all women. Other research has shown that on corporate boards, for example, it’s not until there are three women in the room that their contributions make the most impact. Johnson said it’s not clear whether the effect they saw in their data would hold in a presidential campaign, but the impact it could have on those who tend to hold stronger implicit biases could play a role. “It’s a different context,” she said. “But I still believe viewers are going to view women differently, because women are going to be different from each other.” JENA MCGREGOR (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Iconic Valentine’s candy won’t be back till ’20
Those chalky Sweethearts candies that tell your Valentine to “Be mine” or “Call me” won’t be on the shelves this holiday season after Necco went out of business last year, Fortune reported this week. The rights to the iconic Valentine’s sweet now belong to Spangler Candy Co., which told Fortune it didn’t have time to supply stores this year — but that the conversation hearts will be back in 2020. POLITICS Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., will propose a new annual “wealth tax” on Americans with more than $50 million in assets, according to an economist advising her on the plan, as Democratic leaders vie for increasingly aggressive solutions to the nation’s wealth inequality. Emmanuel Saez, above, and Gabriel Zucman, two economists at the University of California, Berkeley, have been advising Warren on a proposal to levy a 2 percent wealth tax on Americans with assets above $50 million, as well as a 3 percent wealth tax on those who have more than $1 billion, according to Saez. Warren’s campaign declined to comment on details of the plan. Saez said the wealth tax would raise $2.75 trillion over a 10-year period from about 75,000 families, or less than 0.1 percent of U.S. households. He added: “We think it could have a significant affect on wealth concentration in the long run.” Warren’s proposal includes new mechanisms to combat tax evasion, according to a person familiar with the plan. Those are an increase in funding for the Internal Revenue Service; a mandatory audit rate requiring a certain number of people who pay the wealth tax to be subject to an audit every year; and a one-time tax penalty for those who have more than $50 million and try to renounce their U.S. citizenship. SEBRING, FLA. Investigators have found no obvious reason why a man accused of fatally shooting five women chose a small-town bank in Florida as the place to carry out his attack, authorities said Thursday. Zephen Xaver’s attack did not appear to be part of a robbery, and he had no apparent connection to the SunTrust branch or the four employees and one customer who were killed, police said. There was also no evidence that Wednesday’s attack was planned, although a former girlfriend said Xaver often talked of killing people. “We believe it was a random act,” Sebring Police Chief Karl Hoglund said Thursday at a news conference. “We have no known

farther, just one more driveway, the victims would have been her, her staff and her customers. “He could have come here,” she said. “He could have gone anywhere.” The victims were found lying facedown, their bodies surrounded by shell casings, according to court documents. Six minutes after the attack began, Xaver called 911 and told dispatchers that he had killed everyone inside, Hoglund said. Xaver refused to surrender and would not allow officers to reach the victims, Hoglund said. After more than an hour of negotiations, the chief ordered a SWAT team in. They used an armored vehicle to break through the front doors. Xaver was found in a back office. TERRY SPENCER AND JENNIFER KAY (AP)

KINSHASA, CONGO | Supporters of Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi cheer Thursday during his inauguration. Tshisekedi, 55, succeeds Joseph Kabila in the country’s first peaceful transfer of power since its independence from Belgium nearly 60 years ago. The election faced allegations of fraud and suspicions of a backroom deal by Kabila to install Tshisekedi over another opposition candidate who, according to leaked data, was the real winner.

Congress’ reality check Lawmakers restart talks after Senate rejects GOP, Democratic plans for ending shutdown

Shutdown puts air travel at risk, union warns
Two Senate votes on ending the partial government shutdown failed Thursday.
claim that he could declare a national emergency and fund its construction using other programs in the federal budget. It was i nitia l ly u ncle a r whether the flurry would produce results. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., whose relationship with Trump seems to have soured daily, said a “big” down payment would not be “a reasonable agreement.” Asked if she knew how much money Trump meant, Pelosi said, “I don’t know if he knows what he’s talking about.” Contributing to the pressure, 800,000 federal workers Friday face a second payday with no paychecks.
In an embarrassment to Trump that could weaken his position whenever negotiations get serious, the Democratic proposal got two more votes than the GOP plan. There were six Republican defectors. The Senate first rejected a Republican plan reopening government through September and giving Trump the $5.7 billion he’s demanded for building segments of that wall, a project that he’d long promised Mexico would finance. The 50-47 vote for the measure fell 10 shy of the 60 votes needed to succeed. Minutes later, senators voted 52- 44 for a Democratic alternative that sought to open

padlocked agencies through Feb. 8 with no wall money. That was eight votes short. It was aimed at giving bargainers time to seek an accord while getting paychecks to government workers who are either working without pay or being forced to stay home. Flustered lawmakers said Thursday’s votes could be a reality check that would prod the start of talks. This could “teach us that the leaders are going to have to get together and figure out how to resolve this,” said Sen. John Thune, R-S.D. “One way or another we’ve got to get out of this. POLITICS A splintered Senate swatted down competing Democratic and Republican plans for ending the 34-day partial government shutdown Thursday, leaving President Trump and Congress with no obvious formula for halting the longest-ever closure of federal agencies and the mounting damage it is inflicting. The twin setbacks triggered a swirl of bipartisan activity, unseen for weeks, as senators from both sides floated a plan to temporarily resolve the vitriolic stalemate by reopening government for three weeks while bargainers hunt for a deal. At the same time, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., dashed to the office of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., to explore potential next steps. “We’re talking,” Schumer said, one of the most encouraging statements heard since the shutdown began Dec. 22. At the White House, Trump said he’d support a “reasonable” compromise but suggested he’d want it to include a “prorated down payment for the wall,” which he did not describe. He said he has “other alternatives” for getting wall funding, an apparent reference to his disputed
Unpaid air traffic controllers are waiting tables and driving for Uber in the time left over from their 10-hour shifts tracking the position and speed of aircraft to prevent collisions. Federal employees who oversee the safety of millions of airborne passengers are nearing a breaking point amid the longest government shutdown in history, said Paul Rinaldi, the head of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, whose members are set to miss a second paycheck Friday. The leaders of unions representing pilots and flight attendants on Wednesday expressed “growing concern for the safety and security of our members, our airlines, and the traveling public due to the government shutdown.” They wrote in a statement that they “cannot even calculate the level of risk currently at play, nor predict the point at which the entire system will break. It is unprecedented.” Rinaldi said the shutdown stripped crucial safeguards, adding that workers were toiling without the aid of tactical specialists, training specialists, support staff specialists, qualityassurance specialists and other staff deemed nonessential. “This is a stressful work environment,” Rinaldi said. “What this shutdown is doing is putting the stress on steroids.” ISAAC STANLEY-BECKER

Osaka eyes 2nd straight major title
BARRY SVRLUGA | THE WASHINGTON POST
Until Wednesday, the Caps hadn’t lost seven straight in five years. Now, they have a week to let that sink in. When they return, the jobs of their coach and their general manager won’t be at stake like they were in 2014. This might not be disarray. But they have allowed 30 goals in the past five games. That’s unbefitting a Stanley Cup champion, and the entire skid brings up some uncomfortable questions about the state of the current team. The first is this: The coach with whom the Caps won the Stanley Cup not only is no longer coaching the Caps, but he’s coaching the team ahead of them in the division. Barry Trotz’s Islanders dealt Washington the fourth of these seven losses. I’m not going to get revisionist. I understood at the time why the Caps and Trotz came to an impasse on a new contract. Trotz was nearly fired twice during the 2017-18 regular season, and understandably wanted a five-year, $20 million contract after winning the Cup, which made some members of the Capitals’ hierarchy uneasy. Let’s not make this about, “Well, if they only had Trotzy.” But the issue of the coach also can’t be ignored. Todd Reirden was a well-liked assistant, considered a head
coach-in-waiting. But before this season, he had never run an NHL team and taken on all the responsibilities that come with that. His first squad: the defending Stanley Cup champs. That’s a lot to deal with, and when the Capitals navigated a suspension to Tom Wilson and injuries to T.J. Oshie, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Brooks Orpik, it seemed the team had endured a Stanley Cup hangover. Except here they are, stumbling through January, carrying a massive headache into the NHL All-Star break. “I think the break is coming at a good time for us,” Reirden said after Wednesday’s 6-3 loss to the Maple Leafs. “We understand there’s a lot of work to be done when we get back.” The work also must include some sort of return to the defensive concepts that won the Caps the Cup. Their recent style made for fun hockey nearly a decade ago. But these scores — losses by 7-2, 8-5, 7-6 and 6-3 in an eight-day span — are junk. It’s not the style they’re built to play. It must be purged immediately upon their return. That’s on the veterans, who ought to know better. But it’s also on Reirden. There is time to get this right, but it won’t correct itself. Look, we knew parts of this post-Cup season would be difficult. When you have played the most meaningful games of

your life, how do you get up for St. Louis on a Monday in January (4-1 loss) or San Jose on the following Tuesday (7-6 loss in overtime)? The answer: You better figure out a way. And if a lack of work is the problem, well, that’s unacceptable. These Caps are afforded some leeway because of all they have accomplished. But they’re not allowed to ignore the basics of their job. Seven games in January don’t make the season. Seven games in January don’t take away the Cup. But these seven games in January have given these Washington Capitals much to think about during their break. They are playing lousy hockey. A week from Friday, that needs to stop.
At 21, Naomi Osaka of Japan is on the verge of a second consecutive major championship and the No. 1 ranking. She’ll face two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova on Saturday, and the winner will rise to the top of the WTA rankings for the first time. Kvitova is ranked sixth; Osaka, fourth. To get to the final, Osaka served 15 aces and saved four break points in the third set Thursday to beat Karolina Pliskova, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. On the men’s side, Rafael Nadal continued his relentless roll, defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas, 6-2, 6-4, 6-0. Nadal has not dropped a set as he bids for a second Australian Open title. He awaits the winner of Friday’s semifinal between topranked Novak Djokovic and Lucas Pouille. (AP)

Underrated class of passers GETTY IMAGES/EXPRESS ILLUSTRATION
Forget prototypes. This year’s QB crop is coming at the right time for many NFL teams. NFL The rookie quarterback class of 2018 lived a charmed existence from start to finish. Teams positioned themselves all season to pluck their preferred passer. It delivered at the draft, with five quarterbacks coming off the board in the first round, including four in the first 10 picks. And it fulfilled the hype in its debut season, with No. 1 pick Baker Mayfield leading a revival in Cleveland, Lamar Jackson taking the Baltimore Ravens to the playoffs and Sam Darnold, Josh Allen and Josh Rosen all taking over starting positions. The upcoming quarterback draft class will not undergo a similar trajectory. Between now and April, though, the class may grow on NFL teams in need of quarterback help. “I think as a class as a whole, it’s in my view a little bit underrated,” Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley said. The rosy views of the class are helped by the changing way the

and both are short — Murray stands 5 feet, 9 inches, and McSorley is listed at 6 feet. Murray may have been asked to play another position a decade ago — a time when, Raiders coach Jon Gruden said, he would have eliminated quarterbacks
from consideration based on physical factors. “I used to think that a lot, until I saw Drew Brees twice a year in Tampa, then I met Russell Wilson coming out of N.C. State. … I’m putting away all the prototypes I once had,” Gruden said. “They come in all shapes and sizes, nowadays.” By overlooking qualities previously perceived as deficiencies, an NFL team can give itself more options to find a young quarterback — which means finding a cheap quarterback. The Rams and Bears provided blueprints for how a great team can be built around a decent quarterback with a small cap hit. “It’s becoming a young-quarterback league,” Missouri quarterback Drew Lock said. “Unless you can find a guy that you want to keep that will take you to a Super Bowl … Now, they don’t want to pay that fat lump of cash. Most people are going to do it on a rookie contract if they can.” ADAM KILGORE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The kids stumble upon the somewhat less impressive Sword on the Stone.
FILM NOTES
20TH CENTURY FOX
Labaki a champion for women
KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST
Arthur’s theme: ‘King’s’ kids have a fighting chance There’s a lot to love about “The Kid Who Would Be King.” Actually, there’s everything to love about “The Kid Who Would Be King.” Especially its message. In writer-director Joe Cornish’s follow-up to his 2011 sci-fi blast “Attack the Block,” 12-year-old Alex (Louis Ashbourne Serkis, in an utterly wonderful performance) is a good kid. He’s bullied at school, but he stands up for those kids who get it worse. One night, while fleeing his tormentors, he finds a sword stuck in a stone. He tries to remove it, fails, the movie ends.
That’s a little joke. Of course, Alex frees the sword and receives his quest: Save the world. It seems that Excalibur has reappeared to aid the one who will lead the fight against Morgana (Rebecca Ferguson) when she rises again. She’s been waiting for the world to become divided and leaderless, and boy, did she pick the right time to come back. Alex and a few of his friends are the ones who must go up against her because the crappiness of modern times hasn’t yet corrupted them — they still have hope. Those who know some version of the original legend — whether it’s from reading
Hollywood Reporter: USA renews “Suits” for ninth and final season
“Le Morte d’Arthur” or from seeing “Camelot” or “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” — will be able to pick up on some incredibly clever allusions to the myth. Merlin is there, of course, aging backward as always; there’s a Lance and a Kay (though it’s Kaye here) on his team; and there’s an arcade called Camelslots, which sounds kind of dirty but let’s pretend it doesn’t because that’s really funny. At the core of “The Kid Who Would Be King” are the same messages found at the core of the Arthurian legend: Stand up for the weak. See others as equals. Act with honor. All
‘The Kid Who Would Be King’ (PG, 120 min.) DIRECTOR: Joe Cornish STARS: Louis Ashbourne Serkis, Dean Chaumoo, Patrick Stewart IN A NUTSHELL: A bullied boy stumbles upon the mythical Sword in the Stone, Excalibur, and must form a band of knights to take on the wicked enchantress Morgana.
things that kids must do if they’re going to change the world and all things they can do if we would just stop screwing them up. Kids start out being kind; we teach them that some people aren’t worthy of kindness. Kids start out courageous; we teach them to play it safe (obviously, “courageous” can also be “stupidly dangerous and resulting in dental bills,” so here we’re talking about the courage to take on tough tasks, not the courage that prompts them to see if they can fly). Kids start out creative; we make sure they color inside all sorts of lines. “The Kid Who Would Be King” rests on hope and issues a challenge not only to the kids in the audience, but to those who drove them to the theater: The children will be the ones to fight the environmental, political and moral battles we are walking away from. Are we arming them with the weapons they’ll need to win?
Nadine Labaki is standing taller than usual. The Lebanese director, a source of national pride, this week became the first female artist in the Arab world to be nominated for an Academy Award. Labaki’s best foreign language film nod for “Capernaum” also makes her one of the only female directors to compete at this year’s Oscars, which feature another all-male lineup in the best director category. “I hope I will be representing women filmmakers the best way possible,” Labaki said. “I wish there were a lot more women filmmakers this year represented, nominated in the Oscars. But I am sure in a few years we won’t be having this problem anymore.” SARAH EL DEEB (AP)

Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway’s blonde doppelganger star in “Serenity.”

Thriller ‘Serenity’ sails into tumultuous waters An unthinkable twist further wrecks this cartoonish disaster FILM REVIEW Let it be stipulated that the movie “Serenity” is about a battered woman (Anne Hathaway) who is trying to persuade her ex-husband (Matthew McConaughey) to murder her current one (Jason Clarke). And let it also be stipulated that the movie “Serenity” is absolutely not about that. At first glance, the film is a contemporary film noir so pulpy, steamy and — most regrettably — cheesy that it has all the appeal of microwaved nachos. The dialogue is bad, to the point of self-parody. The performances are cartoonish, especially that of Hathaway, whose femme fatale comes across as a kind of liveaction Jessica Rabbit from “Who Framed Roger Rabbit.” And the scenario abounds with cliche and lazy shorthand: McConaughey’s Baker Dill — a traumatized war veteran and captain of a chartered fishing

boat for wealthy tourists — drinks rum to excess from a mug labeled “World’s Greatest Dad.” That tells us that he has a child somewhere, and that their relationship is fraught. On closer inspection, however, these defects reveal themselves not to be flaws of execution, but deliberate stylistic choices by writer-director Steven Knight. To use a term from computer programming, “Serenity’s” problems aren’t bugs — they’re features. Put another way, the entire story takes place inside invisible air quotes. It isn’t a bad movie. It’s a “bad” one. Any reviewer of “Serenity” is

likely to struggle not to spoil its humongous plot twist. Like the earliest symptoms of the flu, it begins dropping hints of its existence from the get-go, but it only breaks out in full fever gradually, until it consumes the narrative. The very first frame, in fact, tells you something is not quite kosher. Whose eye does “Serenity” open with, in close-up? Why are the characters all so caricatured? Baker has embarrassing sex scenes with a neighbor (Diane Lane) that play like the fantasies of a 13-year-old boy. Who is this business-suited nerd (Jeremy Strong) who keeps showing up, without explanation? All will be revealed in the fullness of time. The twist is, yes, audacious, even daring. It’s full of risk and defiance of expectation. Steven Knight, you’ve got some nerve. But none of those things means that the movie works. Do you see the conundrum here? A reviewer can’t say why “Serenity” fails without ruining it. But then again, the film does that all on its own. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN
Meek Mill was joined at a New York City news conference Wednesday by fellow rapper JAY-Z and the owners of the Philadelphia 76ers, Brooklyn Nets and New England Patriots to announce the formation of the Reform Alliance, an organization that will lobby for changes to state probation and parole laws. “I’m here to speak for all the people who don’t have a voice,” said Mill, whose prison sentence for minor probation violations became a lightning rod for the issue. A coalition of big names from sports and entertainment has pledged $50 million to launch the Reform Alliance. The organization will be led by CNN host Van Jones, a former adviser to President Barack Obama. DEEPTI HAJELA (AP)

Jim Gaffigan to star in Amazon’s first stand-up special
At 82, Alda still happy to fight the good fight AWARDS When Alan Alda receives his lifetime achievement award from the Screen Actors Guild on Sunday, it will celebrate a career that includes six Emmy awards, an Oscar nomination and social activism over nearly seven decades. And one that continues to thrive, despite a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. At 82, Alda is still practicing his craft, describing the idea of retirement as “a living hell.” “Thank goodness I’m still working and having fun. I’m doing ‘Ray Donovan’ and ‘The Good Fight,’ and anything else that comes up that looks like fun to do,” the actor says. “And I’ve been training and doing about a dozen things to hold back the progress of Parkinson’s, which is pretty successful. I’m still able to work and I do everything else that I do with a full heart.” Alda has also been involved in numerous charities and organizations that have supported children’s causes and women’s issues. He hopes the legacy that endures, even more so than his acting, is his social activism, particularly when it comes to his work with the Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University in New York. “I’m not going to notice what happens after I’m dead,” Alda says. “But I would like to leave behind something of use to other people.” JOHN CARUCCI (AP)

SUMMARY: Matthew McConaughey stars as one of those pseudo-hippies who we’re all supposed to think are cool but are actually annoying. He’s a writer who smokes a lot of pot and uses a typewriter. Isla Fisher also stars, which means we’ll get months of people mixing her up with Amy Adams. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)
SUMMARY: “Fifty thousand tourists visit Washington, D.C., every day,” intones the narrator in what we can only assume is a pre-shutdown number. A teenage member of MS-13 tries to protect his brother from being forced to join the gang; luckily he has JeanClaude Van Damme to punch — and punch and punch some more — anyone who says different. Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

J. Cole appeared to throw shade at Kanye West in his new track, “Middle Child,” which dropped Wednesday. The lyrics don’t mention West by name but seem to allude to the rapper’s feud with Drake, as well as his Yeezy brand of sneakers. “If I smoke a rapper it’s gon’ be legit/ It won’t be for clout/ It won’t be for fame/ It won’t be ‘cause my s--- ain’t sellin’ the same/ It won’t be to sell you my latest lil’ sneakers,” Cole raps. The “KOD” rapper also shouts out Drake during the track, saying: “This watch came from Drizzy, he gave me a gift.” (EXPRESS)
