Gingrich Slams ‘Carpet-Bombing’

<bW$ <_hij" D[l$ D[nj Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich’s battle for Florida reaches its conclusion on Tuesday with the state’s primary. The GOP hopefuls don’t have much of a breather: Nevada’s caucus is Saturday.

Newt Gingrich slammed GOP rival Mitt Romney on Sunday for the steady stream of attacks he likened to “carpet-bombing,” trying to cut into the resurgent front-runner’s lead in Florida in the dwindling hours before Tuesday’s pivotal presidential primary. In what has become a wildly unpredictable race, the momentum has swung back to Romney, staggered last weekend by Gingrich’s victory in South Carolina. Romney has begun advertising in Nevada ahead of that state’s caucuses next Saturday, illustrating the challenges ahead for Gingrich, who has pledged to push ahead no matter what happens in Florida. The race has grown more bitter and personal in Florida. The intense effort by Romney to slow Gingrich is comparable to his strategy against Gingrich in the closing month before Iowa’s leadoff caucuses Jan. 3. Gingrich led in Iowa polls, lifted by what were hailed as strong performances in televised debates, only to dip in the face of withering attacks by Romney, aided immensely by ads sponsored by a political committee.

Rick Santorum: Trailing in Florida, the ex-Pennsylvania senator stayed in his home state Sunday, where his 3-year-old daughter, Bella, who has a genetic condition, was hospitalized. Aides said he would resume campaigning as quickly as possible. Ron Paul: The Texas representative is looking ahead to Nevada. His campaign has focused on gathering delegates in caucus states, where it’s less expensive to campaign. (AP)

Newt Gingrich blasts the conservative record of rival Mitt Romney in Lutz, Fla., Sunday.

Hecd[o <_]^ji Ed Mitt Romney returned more of his attention Sunday to President Obama, but he hasn’t relented in attacking Newt Gingrich. With a political committee, Romney has spent $6.8 million in ads criticizing Gingrich in the Florida campaign’s final week. His efforts may be paying off: An NBC News/Marist poll published Sunday showed Romney with support from 42 percent of likely Florida primary voters, compared with 27 percent for Gingrich. (AP)

In Florida, Romney aides have popped up at Gingrich events to question Gingrich’s conservative credentials. Gingrich has responded in turn. “This party is not going to nominate somebody who is a pro-abortion, progun-control, pro-tax-increase liberal,” Gingrich said at an evangelical Christian church in Lutz, calling himself the more loyal conservative on key social issues. It was unclear how aggressively Gingrich would be able to compete in states beyond Florida. The next televised debate, a format Gingrich has used to his advantage, is not until Feb. 22, more than three weeks away. THOMAS BEAUMONT (AP)

At Least 10 Killed in Massive Fla. Pileup A long line of cars and trucks collided one after another early Sunday on a dark Florida highway so shrouded in haze and smoke that drivers were virtually blinded. At least 10 people were killed. Visibility was so poor that when rescuers first arrived, they could only listen for screams and moans to locate victims, police said. At least 18 people were hurt.

Vehicles involved in a huge pileup sit on Interstate 75 near Gainesville, Fla., Sunday.

Authorities were still trying to determine what caused the pileup south of Gainesville on Interstate 75, which had been closed for a time before the accident because of the mixture of fog and heavy smoke from a brush fire that may have been intentionally set. At least five cars and six tractortrailers were involved, and some burst into flames. Photographs of t he scene revealed a gruesome aftermath,

with twisted, burned-out vehicles scattered across the pavement, and smoke still rising above the wreckage. Cars appeared to have smashed into the big rigs and, in one case, a motor home. Some cars were crushed beneath the heavier trucks. Reporters who were allowed to view the site saw one tractor-trailer that was burned down to its skeleton, with charred pages of books and magazines in its cargo area. Bodies were still visible inside a burned-out Grand Prix. (AP) LIPOSUCTION-TUMMYTUCK.com SP C IAL ENDSESO ON!

Senate Targets Insider Trading MWi^_d]jed Aware that most Americans would like to dump them all, members of Congress hope to regain a sense of trust by subjecting themselves to tougher penalties for insider trading and requiring stock transactions to be disclosed within 30 days. A procedural vote Monday would allow the Senate later this week to pass a bill banning members of Congress from using nonpublic information for their personal benefit or “tipping” others to

Insider trading laws apply to all Americans, but CBS’ “60 Minutes” in November said members of Congress get a pass, citing investment deals. The report raised questions about trades by House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Rep. Spencer Bachus, R-Ala., and the husband of Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. inside info they could trade on. House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., said he’s working on an expanded bill that would go beyond stock transactions, and ban lawmakers from making land deals and other investments based on what they learned in Congress. The Senate version of the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowl-

edge (STOCK) Act — written by Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., and Scott Brown, R-Mass. — would subject any member of Congress who violates the ban on insider trading to investigation and prosecution. President Obama endorsed it in the State of the Union address on Tuesday, saying he would “sign it tomorrow.” (AP)

Euphoric seas of supporters waved opposition party flags and offered yellow garlands. They lined roads for miles and climbed atop trees, cars and roofs as Aung San Suu Kyi spoke at impromptu rallies. Some cried as her convoy passed. Cheered by tens of thousands, the 66-year-old opposition leader electrified Myanmar’s repressive political landscape everywhere she traveled Sunday on her first political tour of the countryside since her party registered to run in a historic ballot that could

Suu Kyi’s campaign and by-elections due April 1 are being watched closely by the international community, which sees the vote as a crucial test of whether the mili-

The mere fact that Suu Kyi was able to speak openly in public in Dawei — and her supporters were able to greet her en masse without fear of reprisal — was proof of dramatic progress itself. Members of Occupy D.C. try to prevent a fellow protester from being taken away by U.S. Park Police after he was shocked with a Taser and arrested Sunday at McPherson Square.

Occupiers’ Ire Rises MWi^_d]jed Tensions between Occupy D.C. protesters and law enforcement increased Sunday afternoon with the arrest of a demonstrator and the steady approach of Monday’s noon deadline to enforce a ban on overnight camping. Tempers flared around midday after police subdued a protester in McPherson Square with an electric shock. Several protesters accused the police of using excessive force, saying the demonstrator had been handcuffed by two police officers before a third used the electronic device to stun him. A video of the incident, posted on YouTube, appears to show that the man was not handcuffed when police used the device. The encounter occurred as U.S.

Park Police passed out fliers warning of the deadline to begin enforcing a long-standing ban on camping overnight in the square. A protester known as “Lash” became angry when police entered his tent, demonstrators said. “He told them: ‘Get out of here; get out of my tent. You’ve already given us enough of these,’” said Tracy Keith, 49, a researcher from Raleigh, N.C., who has been in the square for months. Keith said the protester ripped up the flier and followed the police around the encampment, tearing down other fliers as the confrontation escalated.

Ellie Milne, 23, of the District, said three officers used excessive force. “My mother is a police officer, and I grew up trusting the police, but this was blatant police brutality,” Milne said.

Other protesters became angry when police instead put him in a police vehicle. Some protesters said the arrest created a confrontational mood ahead of Monday’s deadline. But the driver of a passing SUV shouted praise to police officers who were in a tense standoff with a group of demonstrators after the arrest. Robert Fields, 56, of Manassas, Va., who visited the square Sunday, said it was time for the occupiers to go and criticized officials for allowing the tents to remain so long. “This is camping, I’m sorry,” Fields, 56, said. Police guard City Hall in Oakland, Calif., on Saturday during Occupy marches.

Officials in Oakland, Calif., assessed damage to City Hall caused by Occupy protesters while leaders of the movement claimed Sunday that police acted illegally in arresting hundreds of demonstrators and could face a lawsuit. Dozens of people broke into City Hall on Saturday, smashing display cases, spray-painting graffiti and burning an American flag. Saturday’s protests — the most turbulent since police dismantled an Occupy encampment there in November — came days after the group threatened to try to shut down the Port of Oakland for a third time, occupy the airport and take over City Hall. The break-in culminated a day of clashes between protesters and police. Nearly 400 people were arrested, police said, and at least three officers and a protester were injured. (AP)

J_c[Êi Kf U.S. Park Police will begin enforcing camping regulations on Monday at noon at McPherson Square, where protesters have been camping since October. The rules prohibit bedding or lying down to sleep in federal parks at night. Some campers spoke Saturday of staging a “sleep strike,” or remaining in the park at night without lying down, in narrow compliance with the rules. Organizers also said tents would still be allowed as long as they did not turn them into winter burrows. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton said in a news release Sunday the National Park Service has so far been respectful of the protesters, and she urged the protesters to show them “respect and civility” as officials enforce the rules. Bringing slots to Prince George’s County, an idea long resisted by local leaders, is supported by most Marylanders, with Prince George’s residents tilting in favor, a Washington Post poll has found. The poll found 57 percent of the county’s residents say they would support a slots casino at a location such as Rosecroft Raceway or National Harbor, and 41 percent oppose it. That prospect — being debated during Maryland’s 90-day legislative session — has the support of a similar share of residents statewide.

By 2-to-1, Marylanders say slots have been a good thing for the state. And more than six in 10 support allowing Las Vegas-style table games, such as blackjack and roulette, at existing state casinos — something already embraced in Delaware, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Marylanders’ receptiveness to gambling comes as lawmakers give the most serious consideration to the most wide-ranging changes in Maryland’s slots program since 2008, when voters authorized five casinos — the third of which is expected to open in June in Anne Arundel County. Gronkitis Patriots tight end builds a following for his actions on and off the field Fhe <eejXWbb The sign outside the restaurant a mile up the road from where Rob Gronkowski scores touchdowns has a flashing suggestion for motorists: “HONK FOR GRONK!” Plenty of car horns will be blaring if the fun-loving marquee tight end returns next Monday as a Super Bowl champion. If his season so far is any indication, Gronkowski will have a major role when the New England Patriots face the New York Giants next Sunday in the NFL championship game. One sign of his importance:

Much of the Super Bowl talk to date has focused on Gronkowski’s balky left ankle. “He’s had a lot of production,” coach Bill Belichick said. “He’s had a lot of touchdowns. He’s had a lot of good blocks. I don’t know what a ‘game changer’ is, but he’s definitely made some plays.” A possible game changer is a tight end who is so good after the catch that he has 21 receptions of more than 20 yards among his total of 90. Or a player who scored three touchdowns in a seven-point win over Indianapolis. Or a 265pound steamroller who mows down defenders on the way to the end zone. Or even a battering

blocker who springs teammates for big gains. Gronkowski has done all that. And that makes him a potential game-breaker. “We love getting him the ball in his hands, and he loves having the ball in his hands, and he does

special things when he has the ball in his hands,” wide receiver Matthew Slater said. Hands like a vise. On the first of his three touchdowns in a 45-10 divisional playoff win over the Denver Broncos, Gronkowski dove in the left side of the end zone and got his right hand on Tom Brady’s 10-yard pass. The ball popped up and, acrobatically, he grabbed it with both hands and clutched it as he fell. “That catch,” Brady said, “was a phenomenal catch, but he’s been making those all year. So, really, it doesn’t surprise us as much because he’s able to make those type of plays in practice and training camp, so you get used to it after awhile.” Gronkowski’s teammates are confident he’ll play in the Super Bowl after suffering what his father said was a high left ankle sprain in the third quarter of a 23-20 win over the Ravens in the AFC championship game.

During the Patriots’ bye week, adult film performer BiBi Jones posted two pictures of her with Gronkowski on her Twitter account. She was wearing his Patriots jersey in both. In one, he was shirtless. He quickly apologized after meeting with team owner Robert Kraft. After beating Baltimore in the AFC Championship, Gronkowski was asked by a reporter from ESPN Deportes whether he would celebrate the victory. “Si,” he said, “Yo soy fiesta” — translating to “I am party.” For $26.99, you can order from his website a T-shirt bearing the words “Yo Soy Fiesta!” with the “o” in “Yo” a caricature of Gronkowski topped by a sombrero. Recently, a sporting goods company posted a video showing an employee clutching T-shirts and running from its store to a residence billed as Gronkowski’s home. When he goes inside, Gronkowski talks with him and then spikes the remote control he was holding. In the closing seconds, Gronkowski says, “Get the Gronk shirt and start gronking.” (AP)

He’d give the Patriots a big advantage — as New York’s cornerbacks are all at least six inches shor ter t han t he 6-foot-6 Gronkowski. So what’s the plan for stopping Gronkowski? “G et a ladder, probably,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin joked. HOWARD ULMAN (AP)

J^[ H[Zia_di Any successful defensive back will tell you that having a short memory ranks high on the list of requirements for playing the position. Give up a big play — no matter how costly — and a corner or safety must flush it from his mind, move onto the next snap and try again. Dwelling on one letdown will lead only to more failures. So it should come as no surprise that new Redskins defensive backs coach Raheem Morris,

who was fired earlier this month as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, wanted nothing to do with the post-firing sabbatical that many coaches take. “I don’t do time off. I’m a football coach,” said Morris, a former safety at Hofstra University. The Buccaneers fired Morris on Jan. 2. A year after a 10-2 campaign in his second season at the helm,

Morris and his team in 2011 failed to overcome a rash of injuries after a 4-2 start and ended the year on a 10-game losing streak. But drawing on that defensive back train of thought, Morris quickly turned his attention to the future. Two days after his dismissal, Morris interviewed with the Redskins. He left Washington with an

offer but asked for time to consider his options. Two days after that, he interviewed with the Vikings for their defensive coordinator position, but Minnesota continued to interview other candidates. Morris on Jan. 11 verbally accepted the Redskins’ offer for a one-year deal. The very next day, Minnesota called with an offer. But Morris declined, even though his position with Washington carried less responsibility. “A lot of people might think it’s a missed opportunity not going to Minnesota after they offered,” Morris said. “But I believe that in this game, all you have is your word and your tape, and I gave these guys my word.” MIKE JONES (THE WASHINGTON POST )

The site will later release “Up to Speed,” a six-part documentary by Richard Linklater about “monumentally ignored monuments of American cities.” Hulu executives say any new series has to measure up to traditional content. “If you’re ever going to do anything original, it’s got to stand up to that,” says Andy Forssell, senior vice president of content. “That can’t be ‘Web video’; it’s got to be TV quality.” Original content remains a small percentage of the budget for Hulu, which plans to spend $500 million on content in 2012.

YouTube recently launched an entire catalog of original programming, spending $100 million on the gradual rollout of more than 100 niche channels that focus on short-form, on-demand programming. At the recent consumer electronics trade show CES, YouTube’s global head of content predicted that by 2020 about 75 percent of channels will be transmitted by the Internet. “Over time, you will see more and more television properties, television channels distributed over the Internet,” Robert Kyncl said. In the next few years, he said, “most of your interests will have channels on YouTube.”

D[j\b_n On Feb. 6, Netf-

lix will premiere its first scripted show, “Lilyhammer,” in which Steve Van Zandt plays a New York mobster in witness protection in Norway. Later in 2012 comes “House of Cards,” an adaptation of the 1990 British miniseries of the same name; the remake stars Kevin Spacey. In 2013, Netflix plans new episodes of “Arrested Development” (starring Jason Bateman, left), which originally aired on Fox. “We are an Internet TV network, and then they are going to become like us,” said Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix.

Yahoo has sought to capitalize on its enormous search audience of nearly 180 million unique monthly visitors by drawing viewers to its original programming, including a slate of women-focused shows launched last fall and comedy programming planned for February. Its first scripted entry will be “Electric City,” a futuristic animated series produced by Tom Hanks Hanks, who will also voice a character. Erin McPherson, head of original programming at Yahoo, likes to call Yahoo “the fifth network.” Its production house in Los Angeles produces as many as 30 originals a month. “The time is right,” McPherson says. “We’re finally here.”

H[\b[Yj_edi e\ K$I$ Belgian-born Gotye’s ‘Making Mirrors’ rocks American influences Cki_Y Last year, Wally De Backer — the Belgian-born, Australia-based singersongwriter now known as Gotye — landed a once-in-a-lifetime hit with “Somebody That I Used to Know,” a subtle breakup song that launched a thousand remixes and more than 10 million YouTube views.

CWa_d] C_hhehi

Got ye sings in English — indeed, he’s a better American pop singer than most American pop singers — and “Making Mirrors” — his restless, often sublime third disc — suggests he has distinctly American tastes: It references Elvis, classic rock, ’90s postmodern pop and more. “Making Mirrors” often seems like a well-thumbed compendium of other people’s good ideas, which is harder to pull off than it seems. Gotye resembles a post-millennial, slightly more enthusiastic Beck, complete with tentative fal-

setto (“Easy Way Out”). “Smoke and Mirrors” borrows from ’60s psychedelic pop, though it seems inspired as much by Freud (”Mother /Are you watching?”) as by the Mamas and the Papas. “Making Mirrors” is heavy on samples and atypical pop instru-

mentation (it has what might now be the world’s most famous xylophone solo). On its best tracks, Gotye’s weird mixture of borrowed and invented makes for the warmest, most accessible bedroom pop album in memory. ALLISON STEWART (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Ne-Yo believes the record industry is segregated, and he has hopes of changing that as the new senior vice president of artists and repertoire for Motown Records. Even though Motown’s legend is rooted in black music, it was music that appealed to everyone, helping to unite a nation in sometimes-divisive times. As a top exec at Motown, Ne-Yo wants to unite people musically once again. “I want to get back to a place where everybody’s listening to the same thing no matter what race, color, creed you are,” the singer said Wednesday. “[Now] there’s music that’s specifically for black people and there’s music that’s specifically for white people, and I feel like the essence of music is lost when you do that.” The 32-year-old says he is looking to sign artists who have a drive and a tremendous work ethic, not just one-hit wonders. “I definitely plan on making sure the people I bring to the industry are going to be an asset to the industry as opposed to a liability,” said Ne-Yo. “It’s more than ‘She looks good in a short skirt’ or ‘He looks good with his shirt off.’” Ne-Yo, who is planning to

He has released his four albums on Island Def Jam Music Group. He’s a lso an actor: Ne-Yo appears in “Red Tails,” about the Tuskegee Airmen, who were the first black fighter pilots to serve in the U.S. military. It debuted at No. 2 with $19.2 million, despite some concerns that a black-themed film would not appeal to a mainstream audience. “It always feels good to beat the odds,” he said. “January 20, 1992. But is that right? What about the Goodyear blimp he supposedly saw in that smogless South Central sky proclaiming that he is a ‘pimp’?” — SLATE.COM blogger Aisha Harris parses the work of a blogger who claims to have figured out which day was the subject of Ice Cube’s ’90s rap classic “Today Was a Good Day.”

“It would be easy for the Romney camp to argue that it was the content of NBC’s broadcast, and not the particular style in which Tom Brokaw delivered it, that was the intention behind the clip’s use. That would make the case for fair use pretty airtight.” — THE ATLANTIC WIRE.COM

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You may have to spend more time dealing directly with a loved one’s troubles today than expected. Don’t be evasive or elusive. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You’re heading toward a new accomplishment, and you may not know just how important this will be for you and those on your team. ARIES (March 21-April 19) You are likely to hit upon a new way to do something that others consider routine. It’s all about to change for the better! TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Are you willing to make the hard decisions today? Others are waiting for you to come through, and you know just what is required. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You are the one others are looking to at this time as an example of how to behave in certain situations. You do, indeed, have a certain style!

Friday’s Solution

Friday’s Solution

CANCER (June 21-July 22) The difference between what can be done and what should be done will be quite clear to you by day’s end. Major mistakes can be avoided. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) The way that you take the lead today will shine as an example to many — and some may actually want to join forces with you for the long haul. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Take care that you do not overreact to the things people say in the heat of the moment today. Even you can say the wrong things.

<EKH H79A JEJ7B Make a 2-7 letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. 7-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You needn’t set yourself up as an example for others to follow — but it’s likely to happen anyway, as a matter of course. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Your personal tastes may be changing in subtle ways. Someone close to you is trying to give you what you want; fill him in.
