NMAAHC wins award for its design

THE WASHINGTON POST AND GETTY IMAGES

THE DISTRICT Over the weekend, while the rest of the world scrolled past headlines about the economic forum in Davos, Switzerland, or the Grammys, a story about a chef, a snub and the president’s daughter gathered steam in Washington. Superstar restaurateur Jose Andres tweeted Saturday night that he wasn’t allowed into an exclusive party at Cafe Milano in Georgetown, and that Ivanka Trump might have had something to do with the slight. The anti-Trump Twitter mob pounced, prompting Ivanka and Milano’s owner, Franco Nuschese, to reach out to Andres and release statements: It was just a private event with a tight guest list. At first Andres wrote in tweets Sunday that he didn’t believe Trump “personally” had anything to do with his snub, but just hours later, the restaurateur hardly seemed appeased.

The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture has received the Beazley Design of the Year award from the Design Museum in London, beating work in the categories of architecture, graphic, product, fashion and transportation design. The museum also won in the architecture category. In an interview with the Design Museum, NMAAHC designer David Adjaye said he wanted to create a space that “transforms the museum from a viewing experience into a narrative experience.” (EXPRESS)

Franco Nuschese, Jose Andres and Ivanka Trump are caught up in drama.

“Let’s not confuse my trying to Be generous and move on, with anything else,” Andres tweeted. “What happened happened and I stand by my account. I’m ready to move on.” But Monday morning, Andres was even more adamant about his version of events, claiming in a tweet that “someone with connections” to Ivanka “made the call” to exclude him from the soiree, an A-list after-party following the Alfalfa Club dinner that Nuschese and others have hosted for the past nine years. Andres tweeted:

“Could Be she didn’t know, but it did happen … and this is not the Washington we know.” Andres himself has admitted that he did not have an invite for the after-party but assumed that he would get in because he was at the preceding dinner. Nuschese said that Cafe Milano, which has seen an influx of negative Yelp reviews since the Andres story broke, was forced to turn away more than a dozen people who were not on the list for Saturday night’s party. NPS wants families to stop leaving cremains at Vietnam Memorial THE DISTRICT When Vietnam veteran Gordon J. Castro died six years ago, his older brother, Leon, had him cremated and placed his remains in a specially inscribed box. Then he got into his Ford pickup, put the box on the passenger seat and drove from Corpus Christi, Texas, to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington to fulfill his brother’s wish

that he be laid to rest at the Wall. Gordon Castro’s remains are among scores that have been left at the Wall over the years in gestures of devotion, but in a practice the National Park Service is now trying to stop. With an aging population of Vietnam veterans, the 50th anniversary of the worst year of fighting and Ken Burns’ powerful Vietnam War documentary, the Park Service said, there has been an increase in remains being left. “It’s been happening for years and years,” said Janet Folkerts, a Park Service curator. “But it’s

becoming more and more of an issue.” Leaving mementos at the Wall has been a tradition since the polished stone memorial bearing the names of the 58,000 Vietnam War dead was dedicated in 1982.

Hundreds of thousands of letters, photographs, jungle boots, stuffed animals, sculptures, dog tags, college rings, a motorcycle, cigars, a piece of a helicopter rotor blade and human remains have been left.

The artifacts are gathered and stored in the Park Service’s large Museum Resource Center in Maryland. The human cremains are kept in a locked metal cabinet. About 70 cremains — some in containers, some scattered — have been left at the Wall over the years, said Folkerts. The first were left in 1990. This past fall, signs were erected at the Wall telling visitors that human remains “and associated objects” should not be left or scattered there, or anywhere on the Mall. “A lot of Vietnam veterans feel very connected to the memorial,” Folkerts said. “It speaks to them in a way that many other places in the country don’t. So they would like to become part of it.” MICHAEL E. RUANE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

But when Pelosi said she wanted the Prince William County social worker to deliver the Spanish-language rebuttal to President Trump’s first State of the Union speech, Guzman couldn’t contain herself. “I started yelling, ‘Oh, my god, hell yes!’ ” Guzman said. Wife of murderer charged with witness retaliation

Man stabbed on Metrobus after argument escalates

Freshman business major gets 4 years for drug ring

Authorities said the wife of a man convicted in the killings of two teens found dead in a car in Montgomery County has been charged with photographing a confidential witness as she testified against her husband. Kara Yanez, 21, was charged with retaliating against a witness, a misdemeanor, after allegedly taking several photos of a female informant earlier this month during the trial of 26-year-old Jose Canales-Yanez. Canales-Yanez was convicted of firstdegree murder in the killings of Shadi Najjar and Artem Ziberov, who were fatally shot the night before their high school graduation. A trial for Kara Yanez is scheduled for March 8. (AP)

Metro officials said an argument between passengers on a Metrobus escalated into a stabbing. Metro spokesman Richard L. Jordan said the stabbing occurred on the A4 route in Southwest D.C. on Sunday afternoon. Jordan said the victim was stabbed in the back and hospitalized with injuries deemed to be non-lifethreatening. Jordan said the assailant got off the bus and fled. Police have released surveillance footage in an attempt to identify the suspect. It’s unclear whether the suspect and victim knew each other before the altercation. The Metropolitan Police Department and Metro Transit police responded to the scene. (AP)

A freshman business major will now spend his next four years in prison for running what authorities called a “mini drug syndicate” at Radford University. Selling cocaine, ecstasy and marijuana paid for the off-campus apartment of 18-year-old Gabriel Eduardo Yus-Baez, where he kept $25,000 and a 9mm gun. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported that a judge gave him a 35-year sentence, but reduced it to less than four years with time served, as long as Yus-Baez stays out of trouble. He also must pay a $4,000 fine, among other penalties. The Times-Dispatch quoted Yus-Baez as saying he was ensnared by fast money. (AP)

FBI’s deputy director abruptly leaves post

STASH OF GOLD

Treasure lost at sea in 1857 goes on display

POLITICS FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe — a frequent target of President Trump’s ire dating to the 2016 presidential election — is stepping down as he nears the date in March when he can retire with full pension benefits, according to people familiar with the matter. McCabe’s departure has been expected. The Washington Post reported in December that he planned to retire and use accrued vacation time to reach his eligibility date. Trump responded to the revelation with a tweet, writing at the time, “90 days to go?!!!” On Monday, people close to the matter confirmed that McCabe’s plan is unchanged. Technically, he will remain an FBI employee for the next several weeks, but he has left the deputy director position and is not expected back to work, these people said. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday that the president “wasn’t part of this decisionmaking process.” McCabe, 49, rose quickly through the FBI’s ranks as a counterterrorism supervisor, helping reorganize how the U.S. government interrogates international terrorism suspects. His tenure as deputy director was sometimes marred by internal

tension between the bureau’s criminal investigative side and its national security branch. David Bowdich, a senior FBI official who led the agency’s response to the San Bernardino terrorist attack, is expected to serve as the next deputy director. McCabe has been a lightning rod in the political battles surrounding special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into whether any Trump associates coordinated with Russia to interfere in the 2016 presidential race. Last week, The Post reported that after James Comey was fired in May 2017 and McCabe assumed the director’s job on an acting basis, the president asked him in a private discussion whom he had voted for in the presidential

election. McCabe responded that he had not voted, officials said. McCabe ran the FBI for three turbulent months last year, until Christopher Wray took over. Trump’s criticism of McCabe dates back to October 2016, when it was revealed that McCabe’s wife had run as a Democrat for the Virginia legislature, aided by nearly $500,000 in donations from the political action committee of then-Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a Democrat and ally of Hillary Clinton. In recent months, McCabe has been criticized by congressional Republicans who challenge the FBI’s rationale for opening the Russia probe in July 2016.

Military adjusts guidelines on fitness trackers TECHNOLOGY The U.S. military said Monday that it is adjusting guidelines for the use of all wireless and technological devices at military facilities amid revelations that fitness trackers can be used to expose the identities of individuals working in sensitive and hazardous locations. The review came after reports that a global heat map posted online by the fitness-tracking company Strava reveals the outlines of U.S. military bases in some of the most dangerous locations in the world — along with the routes taken by supply convoys and patrols. In the latest discoveries Monday, experts and internet sleuths found further ways to use the publicly available Strava data to identify individual users of the tracking service by name, along with the jogging routes they use in war zones. On one Strava site, it is possible to click on a frequently used jogging route and see who runs the route and at what times. One Strava user demonstrated how to use the map and Google to identify by name a U.S. Army major and his running route at a base in Afghanistan. Military rules on the privacy settings relating to devices such as fitness trackers are being “refined” and commanders are being urged to enforce those that are already in place. Strava said it will work with the military to address the issue. LIZ SLY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Capturing Trump’s voice President often leans on a 32-year-old to craft speeches like tonight’s State of the Union

Congress using speech guests to make a point

GETTY IMAGES

POLITICS Behind the closed doors of White House power, a lean, intense 30-something man invariably takes a position at Donald Trump’s side, listening and scribbling down notes. Stephen Miller is the behindthe-scenes power broker whose job is to harness the thoughts and ideas of the least tamable of presidents. The mix must then be channeled into remarks that are both presidential and Trumpish. Trump’s first State of the Union tonight is sure to be much more of a collaborative effort than many of the president’s addresses. But Miller, a kind of Trump whisperer, is often at the center of the action, where he has remained, fixed in place, even as the White House has convulsed with resignations and firings. “Stephen has almost this encyclopedic memory for things the president has said — not only policy, but particular words,” said Jason Miller, no relation, who served as a communications adviser on Trump’s presidential campaign and remains in contact with White House officials. “He trusts Stephen almost like he’s a catalogue of his phrases.” Stephen Miller’s task is no simple one, people who have worked closely with both men say. It involves managing an enormous ego, as well as manipulating words. After all, as Trump said during the campaign, it is he who has the “best words.” “Stephen really knows how to capture his voice,” Sean Spicer, who served as Trump’s first press secretary, said in an interview. Trump intimates are loath

President Trump’s guests for his State of the Union speech at 9 tonight include an Ohio welder who will benefit from the new tax plan and the parents of two Long Island teens believed to have been killed by MS-13 gang members. But Trump won’t be the only one trying to send a message. Here’s how lawmakers are using the speech to make a point. (AP)

A former Trump adviser said Stephen Miller has an “encyclopedic memory for things the president has said.”

#MeToo to say which phrases from his speeches might have sprung from the mind of Miller or other aides, rather than the president’s. “He hates the idea that anyone puts words in his mouth,” a Trump friend said on the condition of anonymity to speak frankly about the president’s inner thoughts. Some who have worked with Trump over the years and been involved in his public remarks and writings say the best way to manage him is through a bit of sleight of hand. Because he isn’t prone to fixate on details, he can sometimes be coaxed into agreeing to something — a turn of phrase, an idea — if he can be persuaded he came up with it himself. “It’s easier to sell him an idea if he thinks the idea is his than if the idea is yours,” a person who knows Trump well said on the condition of anonymity to discuss

What will be in speech? President Trump intends to use his first State of the Union address to cite economic progress under his watch while pushing for bipartisanship with Democrats on issues such as rebuilding roads and bridges. The White House said the president would point to a robust economy and low unemployment during his first year and the benefits of a tax overhaul when he addresses Congress and the nation tonight at 9. Aides have said Trump is expected to set aside his more combative tone for one of compromise and bipartisanship. (AP)

private interactions. Throughout his decades in public life, Trump has been an unpredictable orator, a speaker more prone to riffing than sticking to the script. “He prides himself in his lack of preparation,” said Roger

State of the Union protest guests include San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz, Bill Nye

Stone, a longtime Trump advocate. “In the 40 years I’ve known him, he’s eschewed any kind of prepared speech.” The increased scrutiny of the campaign, though, required an off-the-cuff rambler to sometimes add more precision to the usual stream-of-consciousness. Enter Stephen Miller. During the presidential campaign a scene played out with some frequency, colleagues say. The 32-year-old, who did not respond to a request to be interviewed for this article, would be up front in the plane with his portable printer and Trump would be slashing notes into the margins of another speech. Spicer would watch with a sense of wonder. “Stephen’s job is to listen to him,” said Spicer, who resigned as press secretary in July. “They would sit on the plane. The president would dictate to him: ‘Take this down.’ It was amazing.” MANUEL ROIG-FRANZIA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Many female Democratic lawmakers plan to follow the lead of celebrities at this year’s Golden Globe Awards by wearing black to the State of the Union. Rep. Annie Kuster, D-N.H., has invited Chessy Prout, above, a victim of sexual assault while she attended high school.

Faces of immigration Dozens of young immigrants will be sitting in the House gallery. Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer and other Democratic lawmakers invited “Dreamers” to put a face on an immigration debate that is dominating Congress’ attention.

Empty seats At least five Democrats have announced they are boycotting the president’s address: Reps. Earl Blumenauer, Ore.; Pramila Jayapal, Wash.; John Lewis, Ga.; Frederica Wilson, Fla.; and Maxine Waters, Calif.

Public criticism of the German auto industry has escalated after a report that an industry-sponsored entity commissioned a study of the effects of diesel exhaust using monkeys, while another study exposed humans to low levels of one type of air pollutant. The German government on Monday condemned the experiments and Volkswagen sought to distance itself from them, with its chairman saying that “in the name of the whole board, I emphatically disavow such practices.” The tests were reportedly commissioned by a research group funded by major German auto companies. In the latest wave of violence in Kabul, 11 Afghan soldiers were killed by Islamic State militants on Monday while guarding the Marshal Fahim National Defense University. The attack began before dawn, with a suicide bomber striking the military unit. During the ensuing gunbattle, two attackers were killed, two detonated their vests and one was arrested by responding troops. The same academy was attacked in October 2017. Officials, including President Trump, the neighboring country of Pakistan and Afghanistan’s president, Ashraf Ghani, condemned the attack. (AP)

Veteran journalist Jim Kirk is expected to be named editor-inchief of the Los Angeles Times, replacing Lewis D’Vorkin, who has held the position since November. The Tronc-owned Times has been shaken by the recent hiring of news executives who reported to business executives — not newsroom editors — to top positions. Fearing that business would find its way into editorial decisions, journalists voted to unionize for the first time in the Times’ history. Kirk previously worked at the Chicago Tribune, Bloomberg News and Adweek, and became publisher and editor of the Chicago Sun-Times in 2012. (AP)

MORE MINUTES OF SLEEP

The increase in the number of minutes of sleep per weeknight for the average American in 2016 compared to 2003, according to an analysis of federal data published this month in the journal Sleep, The New York Times reported Monday. The change is credited to a little less TV and reading before bed. But statistics show that a third of U.S. adults still get inadequate sleep, which is defined as less than seven hours per night. Violence eclipses peace talks Clashes across Syria overshadow start of Russia-hosted dialogue SYRIA Intense clashes erupted Monday on a strategic hilltop in northwestern Syria as Kurdish forces tried to enter the area a day after it was captured by Turkish troops. Turkish military officials canceled a government-organized press tour to the captured Bursayah Hill, separating the Kurdish-held enclave of Afrin from the Turkey-controlled town of Azaz, due to what they described as “security concerns.” Separately, in the nearby rebelheld province of Idlib, suspected Syrian government airstrikes

killed at least 21 people and put a hospital out of order. Russia also called on the Syrian government Monday to allow a medical evacuation from a rebel-held suburb of the capital, Damascus. The violence has overshadowed a peace conference hosted by Russia that opened in Sochi on Monday. Russia, a key ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, said it invited 1,600 representatives to the talks, but so far only the government and opposition representatives tolerated by it showed up. The main Syrian opposition body has boycotted the talks. The main Syrian Kurdish militia, which is fighting in Afrin and controls 25 percent of Syrian territory, has also declined to attend, saying it holds Russia responsible

for the Turkish offensive. Alexander Lavrentiev, Russia’s envoy for Syria, downplayed the violence, saying the situation in

Afrin has “somehow stabilized.” The Turkish incursion began on Jan. 20, with Ankara saying it seeks to drive “terrorists” away from its border and create a safe zone in the area. Turkey considers the Syrian Kurdish militia in control of Afrin an extension of the Kurdish insurgency within its own borders. On Monday, Turkish authorities said they had detained 311 people for allegedly engaging in “terrorist propaganda” through social media postings critical of the Afrin offensive. The Turkish-led offensive into Afrin has opened a new front in the civil war, which is not over despite gains by Assad’s forces and the expulsion of the Islamic State.

PARIS | Floodwaters reached a peak in Paris on Monday and were threatening towns downstream along the rain-engorged Seine River. The national weather service Meteo France said that the rains in the past two months are the highest measured for the period in 50 years. Flood monitoring agency Vigicrues said the water levels in Paris hit a maximum height of 19 feet, 2 inches on the Austerlitz scale early Monday.

NATIONAL SECURITY The House Intelligence Committee voted Monday evening to release a memo detailing alleged surveillance abuses by the FBI and Justice Department, escalating a political fight between conservatives and the nation’s intelligence agencies. The party-line vote from the Republican-controlled committee means that President Trump has up to five days to review the material and decide whether to keep it secret. Trump wants the memo to go public. “We had votes today to politicize the intelligence process,” said Rep. Adam B. Schiff, D-Calif., the committee’s ranking member. He also said the committee is investigating the FBI and Justice Department. The memo effort was led by the committee’s chairman, Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif., above. The committee also voted along party lines against releasing a rebuttal memo from Democrats. The memo has become a flashpoint in the political battle to understand the scope of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election and whether any of Trump’s associates coordinated with the Kremlin. Republicans say the document shows the investigation may be tainted by political bias. Democrats call it a cynical attempt to undercut the work of special counsel Robert Mueller. Hustle backs up swag

Relentless work ethic helps Kelly Oubre Jr.’s skills catch up to his sky-high confidence WIZARDS Long before Kelly Oubre Jr. came to the Wizards, he was a scrawny kid who believed he belonged on the same court with NBA players. Melvin Hunt, now a Mavericks assistant coach, first met him at a Nike camp in Las Vegas. Every high school player there was elite, but Oubre stood out with flashy sunglasses and an unfortunate blond dye job that made his hair look orange. No one oozed more swagger than Oubre, even as he faced NBA players. “I was like, ‘This kid isn’t scared at all,’ ” Hunt said. Though Oubre couldn’t shoot, he could make plays. When he came to the Kevin Durant camp in Washington, Hunt noticed another side. Oubre showed he was

eager to be coached, staying late to get advice and take extra shots. Over the years, Oubre’s swag has soared — but so has his game. In his third season, Oubre has played in all 49 games and has already surpassed his scoring total from last year. He’s been a second-unit spark plug, averaging seven more minutes than last season and scoring 12.1 points per game, nearly six more than last year. His greatest gain has come from beyond the arc. Over the last 10 games, Oubre has averaged 5.3 shots from 3-point range and made 45.3 percent of them. A workout addict, Oubre, 22, sees this season as a continuation of his drive for improvement. “I never really switched up my routine and wavered who

Oubre is known to fly in his trainer Drew Hanlen for extra work during the season. Over the summer, Oubre even turned a pleasure trip to New York Fashion Week into a grind with Carmelo Anthony’s trainer. “We actually worked out at 5 a.m., and that was his request,” Chris Brickley said. “That was the only guy all summer that wanted to work out that early.” Anthony and Oubre played together in pick-up games, and the 10-time All-Star observed Oubre’s greatest strength. “His confidence,” Anthony said. “The biggest thing in this league is confidence. If you ... have a low level of confidence, this league will eat you alive.”

In exchange for Griffin — the No. 1 overall pick of the 2009 NBA draft and a five-time AllStar — Los Angeles will reportedly get Tobias Harris, Avery Bradley, Boban Marjanovic, and a first-round and second-round draft pick. ESPN reported that the Clippers will also send Brice Johnson and Willie Reed to Detroit. Griffin, 28, was a free agent last summer but agreed to return to Los Angeles on a five-year deal worth $175 million. Beckham establishes team in Miami after 4-year wait David Beckham and MLS announced Monday that a long-awaited Miami franchise is now official. It took Beckham, the English soccer icon, nearly four years just to get this far, and there are a slew of details still to come. The name and logo have yet to be revealed. The team will play in a 25,000-seat, privately funded stadium, but it may not be ready for the club’s inaugural season in 2020. Part of the deal also is that Beckham’s group will build a training center and an academy focused on developing local players. As part of Beckham’s playing contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy, he was allowed to establish an MLS franchise for $25 million. (AP)

Indians to remove Chief Wahoo logo Old, cartoonish image will be taken off caps and jerseys after 2018 MLB The Indians on Monday announced they are dropping the Chief Wahoo logo from their uniforms next year, bowing to decades of complaints that the grinning, red-faced caricature used in one version or another since 1947 is racist. The move came after protracted discussions between team owner Paul Dolan and Commissioner Rob Manfred. The cartoonish image of a bigtoothed American Indian with a scarlet face and a single feather in his headdress will come off the team’s jersey sleeves and caps starting with the 2019 season. “Major League Baseball is committed to building a culture of diversity and inclusion throughout the game,” Manfred

said in a statement. He said the logo “is no longer appropriate for on-field use.” The decision is unlikely to quell complaints from Native American organizations and others who see the symbol as offensive. The Indians will continue to wear the Wahoo logo in 2018, and even after it is gone from the uniform, the club will still sell merchandise featuring the mascot in the Cleveland area. Under growing pressure, the club has been moving away from the Chief Wahoo logo in recent years. The Indians replaced it with a “C’’ on some of their caps and removed signs with Chief Wahoo at their ballpark. The Indians’ successful bid to host the 2019 All-Star Game further heightened the debate. The team will continue to sell Chief Wahoo gear because if it stops doing so, it will lose ownership of the trademark. TOM WITHERS (AP)

FITNESS ADVICE

Why are you always hungry?

Teaching classes as a side hustle Becoming a fitness instructor may be an ideal side gig. Here are six reasons why.

At best, constant hunger is annoying and distracting. At worst, it’s a sign that something’s amiss. Either way, the mental wrestling can make it hard to trust the messages your body is sending. Assuming you’re eating regularly throughout the day, there are several possible explanations for why hunger might be a constant companion. CARRIE DENNETT (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST) You’re not getting enough protein in your meals Of the three macronutrients — carbohydrates, protein and fat — protein contributes the most to satiety, the feeling that you’ve eaten enough. That doesn’t mean you should go overboard on protein. You need the nutritional variety from all three macronutrients, but making sure to include some protein in each meal and snack may keep you satisfied longer. That could be eggs, yogurt, tofu, beans, fish, chicken or meat.

Your gut isn’t diverse enough Your gut, and the microbes that dwell in it, act as a “mini brain,” influencing, among other things, mood, appetite and food cravings. The microbes in our gut produce a number of compounds, including some that are identical or similar to appetite hormones. About 20 minutes after a meal, certain bacteria in your gut send signals that you’ve had enough to eat. But if you don’t have a

very diverse microbiota, other species can become dominant. When you and a dominant group of microbes aren’t on the same page, they will try to manipulate your eating behavior for their benefit. They may cause cravings for their preferred foods, or for foods that suppress their competitors. They may simply increase your hunger levels until you eventually eat what they want you to eat. Support a diverse microbiota by eating foods rich in fiber and probiotic bacteria, being physically active, handling stress and getting adequate sleep.

You aren’t sleeping enough Chronically skimping on sleep can lead to increased hunger and carbohydrate cravings, possibly because of the loss of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Results of a 2015 study published in the journal Sleep Medicine suggest that the loss of our final REM sleep cycle of the night, which begins around the six-hour mark, may

ELISABETH LEAMY (TWP)

We should all exercise anyway, and this is a way to use those same hours to make money. You’ll be more likely to stick with your exercise routine if people are counting on you. You’ll exercise harder because other people are watching. Instead of paying to take the class, you’ll get paid to teach the class. The median wage for fitness instructors is about $18 per hour, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

lead to a bigger appetite.

You don’t know what real hunger feels like

You need to eat more often

Many people have lost touch with their hunger signals. They may have a habit of skipping meals, or of constant grazing. Some people are chronic dieters, or have a chaotic home or work life. Each of these scenarios can silence hunger signals over time. When you can’t identify true hunger, you may mistake other urges to eat — including cravings, emotions or the need for stimulation — for hunger.

There are many opinions about the optimal number of daily meals and snacks. Your ideal meal frequency will give you steady energy throughout the day and let you get hungry enough between meals that you feel ready to eat a nourishing meal but not so hungry that you are ready to eat the first thing you see. Experiment with meal frequency to see what feels right for you.

The thank-yous that never come Q. For three years, I’ve exchanged small Christmas gifts (tea, toiletries) with a friend. We exchange them wrapped and thank each other then, but open them on Christmas. Not once has she acknowledged or thanked me for the specific gift, despite my doing it every year by phone or note or in person. I am left wondering if she lost the package or really hated the gift. STYMIED It’s clear you two have different styles. She thanks you in person and doesn’t follow up later. Can you live with her way, if it doesn’t change? Prodding for follow-up might be awkward, ineffectual at changing her habits, or both. And this isn’t a situation where you send a huge wedding gift, receive no acknowledgment and have a valid need to know if your

husband had adult kids in other states. I’m not a big telephone or social media person, so I learn from him what is going on with them. I have no connection with them or the grandkids. When we see each other in person (maybe annually), we get along fine. Is more required of me? I like to do things jointly or not at all. WONDERING Well, right now you’re doing the “not at all” — and the ache you feel is a sign that it’s not optimal. And doing things jointly just might not be realistic because you don’t like phone calls or social media. So, how do you choose to communicate with those you care about, and why can’t your stepchildren and their families be brought into that fold? It’s not about what’s “required”; it’s about whether you value connection with them. When someday you look back on the relationship you did or did not develop, logistics are going to seem a silly excuse. You either go for the emotional connection or you don’t. You either choose to spread the goodwill of the visits into yearlong warmth, or you don’t. It’s truly up to you, but your letter seems to say you want more. Grammys continue to miss the cultural mark Rappers and women were nearly shut out of music’s biggest night PERSPECTIVE “I didn’t think they gave the rightful respect to hip-hop.” That was JAY-Z’s position in 2002 when someone asked him why he’d boycotted the Grammys since 1999. Leap ahead 16 years to Sunday’s 60th Grammy Awards in New York — where JAY-Z led the nominees with eight nods — and that respect was still nowhere to be seen. For the first time ever, three of the artists nominated for album of the year were rappers: JAY-Z, Kendrick Lamar and Childish Gambino. But all three lost to “24K Magic,” a collection of funk ditties by Bruno Mars. JAY-Z went home empty-handed. And he’d already been having a rough day. On Sunday morning, after CNN had aired an interview during which JAY-Z critiqued President Trump’s poor word choices, Trump lobbed a

tweet in the rapper’s direction: “Somebody please inform JayZ that because of my policies, Black Unemployment has just been reported to be at the LOWEST RATE EVER RECORDED!” But in a strange and unfortunate way, Trump’s outburst illuminated something big: American rappers are among the most influential voices in our democracy. So when will the Grammys finally figure out that rap music is the dominant pop idiom of our era? It’s been 14 long years since OutKast won album of the year for “Speakerboxx/The Love Below” in 2004, and there hasn’t been a rapper to take the industry’s top honor before or since. That’s inexcusable — most recently with regard to Kendrick Lamar, the Los Angeles virtuoso who became a three-time album of the year loser Sunday night. The Grammys had other trophies to share, with best new artist going to Alessia Cara, the only woman who received a solo prize on the main telecast. Ed

Sheeran’s monster hit “Shape of You” triumphed in the pop solo performance category instead of Kesha’s “Praying” — though her emotional performance of her anthem about overcoming abuse was a commanding moment. One important voice we didn’t get to hear a sound from: Lorde. The 21-year-old pop phenom was this year’s lone female nominee for album of the year, but according to a report from Variety, she declined to perform Sunday after Grammy producers asked her to appear in a tribute to the late Tom Petty rather than sing a tune of her own. Other album of the year nominees — Childish Gambino, Lamar and Mars — were given slots in the show. Had Lorde decided to bail on the whole thing outright, she would have joined a growing cast of AWOL A-listers, including Justin Bieber and Drake. As ever at the Grammys, the respect — and lack thereof — flows both ways. CHRIS RICHARDS AND EMILY YAHR

It must be a beautiful day in this neighborhood for Tom Hanks: The actor will star as Mister Rogers in the upcoming biopic “You Are My Friend.” TriStar Pictures announced Monday that it has acquired worldwide rights to the film, to be directed by “The Diary of a Teenage Girl” filmmaker Marielle Heller. The film will focus on the friendship between the host of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” and journalist Tom Junod. Junod reluctantly agreed to profile Fred Rogers only to find “his perspective on life transformed.” Production on the biopic will begin in September, with a 2019 release expected. Rogers died in 2003 at age 74. Hanks was last seen in Steven Spielberg’s “The Post.” (AP)

Dave Eggers brews up an astonishing tale BOOK REVIEW As legend has it, coffee was born in Yemen, when a Sufi brewed the beverage to fuel his latenight devotions. Roughly 700 years later, a Yemeni-American set out to revive the country’s languished and forgotten role in the world’s coffee trade. Master storyteller Dave Eggers spins the story of this quest, which proves astonishing even aside from the half-dozen near-death experiences, in his latest nonfiction book, “The Monk of Mokha,” out now. Readers follow Mokhtar Alkhanshali’s journey from his childhood to the verdant mountains of Yemen to the testing room for those aspiring to be expert coffee graders. Interspersed along the way are treatises on the colorful history of coffee and the extensive process involved in producing that steaming cup of joe. If Alkhanshali’s mission sounds ambitious, it becomes even more so with Yemen’s instability following the Arab Spring and the rise of Houthi rebels. Alkhanshali uses his gift of gab to talk himself out of the many sticky situations in which he finds himself in Yemen. Some of these incidents border on the fantastical, and a reader can’t help wonder if it all happened as described. Still, they’re side stories to the indisputably remarkable and true tale of how Yemeni coffee got its second act on the world stage. RASHA MADKOUR (AP)

@BELLANAIJA, tweeting yesterday,

which was the fifth Monday of January 2018. Starting the new year with so many Mondays had a lot of people dragging their feet. “How is it STILL January? How many weeks are in this month exactly?” @TreasuryMog wondered. And @mashallahsar tweeted: “3000 years later, we’re still in January 2018.”

“I will pay top dollar to get an audiobook of Fire and Fury with Cardi B narrating and providing commentary.” @JOECHE92, tweeting after Cardi B made waves during the

Grammys with her moment in the clip of celebrities reading excerpts of Michael Wolff’s “Fire and Fury.” While reading about Trump eating cheeseburgers, Cardi B looked up incredulously and said, “Why am I even reading this s---? ... This how he lives his life?” Hillary Clinton made a surprise appearance at the end of the clip.

“Blue Ivy is my favorite TV talent show judge.” @YOUNGSINICK, tweeting after Blue

Ivy literally gestured for her parents Beyonce and JAY-Z to stop clapping when Camilla Cabello spoke during the Grammys. The GIF of Blue shushing the world’s biggest power couple had Twitter in stitches. “Til Beyonce learns to act right, Blue Ivy will be taking over her Queenly duties,” @TheSupremeBey tweeted. And @TrillestAC wrote: “They embarrassing her.”

MEDIUM

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You are trying to position yourself for a promotion, but your attitude may be getting in the way. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You are tempted to throw up your hands and walk away from a situation, but that would be premature. ARIES (March 21-April 19) You may not be feeling as enthusiastic as usual today, but you can still get a great deal done. Bad news needn’t stand in your way. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You are perhaps too concerned with the way things “look” at this time. Focus more on the results of your actions. MONDAY’S SOLUTION

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You may

be getting ready for a change that will affect all areas of your life. It’s time to apply a lesson learned.

MONDAY’S SOLUTION

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Make

sure that you are in the spotlight at just the right time and all will be well. When the time comes to step out of it, you must do so. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You’ve been working on a strategy that seems to apply to your situation less and less. Why keep working on it as it is? VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You have been jumping to all kinds of conclusions without examining the evidence. Today, the facts lead you in the right direction.

By the afternoon, conditions turn quite blustery with winds gusting up to 25 mph as clouds decrease. Skies turn clear tonight as winds settle down and temperatures tumble.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Leave

the guesswork to others today, and focus on those things that tell you precisely what you need to know. This minimizes risk. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) Accuracy is key today; you cannot afford to do anything that seems faulty or misleading to others. Today you must get it right.

DATING

For a CR Fashion Book cover story, Zendaya spoke to Cardi B about the perils of dating as an entertainer. “There’s just certain things in our lives that’s hard for people to understand if they don’t live it. … I’m not just sitting around all day. I’m on camera, I’m shooting, I’m working, I can’t have my phone,” the actress said. “But that doesn’t mean somebody who’s not in the industry can’t understand it.” it. (EXPRESS)
