Imagine making this much effort just to give up at the very end! The FBI and local police are investigating a Miamiarea mystery: Who dug a tunnel under a road pointing to a Chase bank branch? FBI spokesman Mike Leverock said Wednesday that a driver saw what looked like a sinkhole in Pembroke Pines. Investigators found an entrance hole in a wooded area with a generator and electric cords. The tunnel leads toward the bank, a distance of 50 yards. (AP) SURVIVAL OF THE NOT-SO-FIT

Widower completes quest REGION Capitals fan Greg Christian held a handmade poster outside Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena last Wednesday depicting the 36 venues in which he had seen his favorite team play. In his other hand, the Baltimore native and D.C. resident gripped a 20- by 30-inch photograph of his late wife, Dona Coultice-Christian, wearing her matching lavender Hockey Fights Cancer sweater. The couple had visited 34 hockey venues together before Dona died of pancreatic cancer on Thanksgiving. Greg made sure she was by his side for the final two stops of their tour, St. Louis and Toronto. “I came to the realization that she would’ve wanted me to go,

and so I went,” Christian said. “I thought taking the picture of her was a way to have her along with me.” By the summer of 2013, Christian and his wife had visited 48 of 50 states. They made their next goal to see a Capitals game in every NHL arena.

The primary purpose of their travels was always to see the Capitals and check another arena off their list, but they made an effort to visit family and sightsee whenever possible. The pair had visited more than half the arenas in the league when Coultice-Christian was

diagnosed with cancer in April 2017. Rather than put their quest on hold, she retired from her position as an adjunct professor in the communications department at George Washington, and they traveled more. During the 2017-18 season, the couple hit 11 new arenas. When the Capitals’ 2018-19 slate was announced, they made plans to visit St. Louis and Toronto, their final destinations. Coultice-Christian was responding well to treatment at the time, but then her condition deteriorated rapidly. “Pancreatic cancer claimed my linemate yesterday,” Christian wrote on Twitter on Nov. 23. Christian’s tour is complete for now, but he’s already looking forward to checking another venue off his list when the Capitals make their first visit to play Seattle’s expansion team during the 2021-22 season. Va. abortion fight heats up

Herring said. At issue is legislation sponsored by Del. Kathy Tran that would reduce the number of doctors needed to certify lateterm abortions from three to one. The measure also would delete the requirement that doctors determine that continuing a pregnancy would “substantially and irremediably” impair a woman’s health. Instead, doctors would have to certify only that the woman’s health was impaired. Recent video of Tran saying the bill would allow abortions up until moments before birth has been viewed millions of times. Opponents said the bill is designed to remove any meaningful limitations on late-state abortions. Supporters say the legislation, which has already failed, would ease the bureaucratic burden for a small number of families facing severe medical

Four separate fires in Maryland and two in Northern Virginia early Thursday left one man dead and several others displaced or injured. The fires occurred on the coldest morning of the season, as temperatures dropped below zero in some locations around D.C. In most cases, the causes of the fires were under investigation. In Anne Arundel County, Md., officials said a man, woman and 5-year-old boy pulled from a basement were taken to hospitals; the man later died.

issues that may require an abortion late in a pregnancy. The governor defended the legislation Wednesday and noted that late-term abortions are usually done because the infant is severely deformed or unable to survive after birth. Northam said that if a woman were to desire an abortion as she’s going into labor,

the baby would be “resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue” between doctors and the mother, leaving open what would happen next. Republicans said Northam’s statements made his views clear. “He was very clear in what he said and I think that was very disturbing,” House Speaker Kirk Cox said. Northam denies advocating infanticide and said he was trying to answer a question from a medical perspective. He said he has no regrets about what he said or how he said it. “We believe legislators, most of whom are men, should not be making decisions about women’s choices for their reproductive health. My Republican friends believe something different,” Northam said. ALAN SUDERMAN (AP)

VIRGINIA A pitched debate about late-term abortions in Virginia erupted into all-out political warfare Thursday as Republicans — including President Trump — sought to capitalize on Democratic missteps. Republicans accused Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam, a pediatric neurologist, of backing infanticide. Republicans said recent statements by Northam and other Democrats have laid bare their support for on-demand abortions at any point of a pregnancy, including up to the moments before birth — or even after. GOP lawmakers warned voters about what would happen if Democrats took control of the General Assembly. “We need to take these words seriously. We need to understand that this is what is yet to come folks, and we need to make sure that we do everything to stop it,” GOP Del. Kathy Byron said. Democrats countered that Republicans are panicked by their dim political prospects and willing to do anything to keep control of the legislature. Virginia is one of only a handful of states holding legislative elections this year. “Desperation can be ugly. And what we’ve seen from Republicans over the last few days has been desperate and it has been ugly,” Attorney General Mark

Metro access: A luxury?

Efforts to add affordable housing haven’t narrowed wealth gap near D.C. stations Luxury apartments were built next to the WiehleReston stop in 2016. But most stations still lack nearby affordable housing.

WASHINGTONPOST.COM TRIPPING

Metro wants input on station art and music

PETE MAROVICH (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

THE DISTRICT The creation of thousands of units of affordable housing in Washington seems to have done little to reverse the disparity around Metro stations, where the better-off are disproportionately more likely to be able to live steps from trains, while the less wealthy live farther away. Between 2012 and 2016, about half of all households in Washington had incomes of $75,000 or less. But among the roughly 200,000 households living within a half-mile of each of the 40 Metro stations in the city, it’s a different story, according to data based on Census estimates made available to Express by the District’s planning department. Only 44 percent of the roughly 200,000 households living near a station made $75,000 or less. That translates to more than 10,000 fewer households with modest incomes benefiting from the shorter commutes that come with living near Metro than if the mix of incomes near stations more closely matched the city as a whole. At the same time, while only 39 percent of all Washington households had incomes of $100,000 or more between 2012 and 2016, 45 percent of households living near stations had incomes in the six figures. That disproportionately low numbers of middle- or lowerincome families live near stations worries local transportation and policy experts, who say not much has changed since 2016. Besides having to go farther to catch trains, those living farther from Metro stations often pay more to commute. “We’re seeing the rich get richer — in both wealth and quality of life — and low-income people having to keep fighting to

stay afloat with everyday tasks, like getting to work or day care,” said Paul Mackie, research director for Mobility Lab, an Arlington transportation research center. Between 2012 and 2016, households near D.C. Metro stations had a median income of $93,022 — about $20,000 above the city’s median household income of $72,935. That was up from between 2007 and 2011, when the $77,759 median income of households within a half-mile of stations was about $16,000 higher than the city’s median income. However, just because a household has a higher income doesn’t mean those in it are rich. A study last May by the city’s Office of Revenue Analysis found that those living in “premium” apartments tend to be younger than 31, with a median income of $57,428. Because the rent in those buildings averaged $2,184 for a one-bedroom unit in 2017, the report surmised that many can

Another look Those living near Metro stations are less likely to receive public assistance, but the District’s Census estimates did not include data on food stamps. A separate analysis by Express found that 9.2 percent of D.C. households in the same halfmile Census tract as a Metro station had received food aid at some point between 2008 and 2012. The figure around stations dropped to 8.6 percent between 2013 and 2017, even as the percentage of all D.C. households getting food assistance rose. (EXPRESS)

only live in them by having roommates. The report, though, didn’t look at how much of the growth in high incomes around stations is made up of lower-income people living with roommates. While the disproportionate wealth around stations hasn’t improved, it’s unclear to what

Light snow around region could cause icy travel for Friday morning’s commute

extent it has gotten worse. Between 2007 and 2011, about 63 percent of D.C. households making $75,000 or less lived near a station. Between 2012 and 2016, the same percentage of middle- and lower-income D.C. households lived near Metro. That may be true citywide, said Patrick McAnaney, who works for a housing developer. But the past few years have seen significant changes around certain stations. Based on city data, he noted the areas around Farragut North, Columbia Heights, Georgia Ave-Petworth, Navy Yard-Ballpark and Union Station have each seen a decline of at least 867 households making $75,000 or less. In addition, between 2007 and 2011, 12 stations were in areas where the median household income was less than the city’s median. But that number had dropped to eight between 2012 and 2016. KERY MURAKAMI (EXPRESS)

Metro wants to know what you think about its art collection and musical performers. Through its online survey program, Amplify, the agency is gauging how aware riders are about the artwork and performing artists that can already be found inside its stations and buildings. It’s also inviting users to offer suggestions about what they might like to see or hear. The agency is interested in not only boosting awareness of its Art in Transit program but developing new programs that might appeal to people in the region. The system is host to a number of artworks, including mosaics, murals and a marble wall sculpture of a wave in the Archives Station that was given to Metro by the Lisbon’s metro system in 1995. The most expensive piece in its collection is the Technology Triangle Colonnade at the Greensboro Station on the Silver Line. Besides the few dozen public artworks throughout its system, the agency supports local performing artists in its stations through the MetroPerforms! Program. Metro also cosponsors the annual SummerSet DC concert series, which used to be known as Music on the Mall, Metro spokeswoman Sherri Ly said. She said the Amplify survey is the first to look at its Art in Transit program, which began in 1997. FREDRICK KUNKLE

U.S. pushes ahead with oil leases on sacred site

<SMILE EMOJI>

Study: Leaving Facebook may cheer you up

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. U.S. land managers will move forward in March with the sale of oil and gas leases that include land near Chaco Culture National Historical Park in New Mexico and other areas sacred to Native American tribes. The sale comes as Democratic members of Congress, tribal leaders and environmentalists have criticized the federal Bureau of Land Management for pushing ahead with drilling permit reviews and preparations for energy leases despite the recent government shutdown. Critics complained that, with limited staff over the past month, they were locked out of the process because the agency didn’t release any information about the sale. They also questioned if the agency would be able to adequately review the land up for bid and if it would consider protests to the move. “We cannot help but protest what appears to be an intentional bias in the favoring of oil and gas development over other interests,” former Acoma Pueblo Gov. Kurt Riley said last week during a congressional forum. Riley and others said the shutdown exacerbated an already tense situation over the expansion of oil and gas development

in northwestern New Mexico. Agency spokeswoman Cathy Garber said officials decided to push back the lease sale by a couple of weeks to accommodate a public protest period that was delayed because of the shutdown. The agency confirmed on its website that it would accept comments starting Feb. 11 and that the sale was set for March 28. Depending on the outcome of the protests, it’s possible for the agency to put off or withdraw nine parcels of land that are within 10 miles of Chaco, a world heritage site with massive stone structures, kivas and other features that archaeologists believe offered a religious or ritualistic

experience. Accessible only by rough dirt roads, Chaco takes effort to reach, and supporters say they want to protect the sense of remoteness that comes with making the journey. For tribes, the fight is centered on preserving what remains of a ceremonial and economic hub. The battle over energy development around Chaco, which is bordered by the Navajo Nation and a checkboard of state and federal land, has been simmering for years. Government officials visited the area in 2015 in hopes of brokering a way forward for the tribes and energy companies.

Deactivating Facebook for four weeks produced a small but significant improvement in people’s self-reported happiness, researchers at Stanford and New York universities found in a study published Sunday. Temporarily quitting the social network led people to spend more time socializing with family and friends, the study showed. And although people reported being less informed when they are away from Facebook, it also cooled partisan thinking. The researchers found the deactivation freed up an hour per day for participants, on average. And the people who took a break from Facebook continued to use the platform less even after the experiment ended. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Study: Girls’ pain is taken less seriously How much pain adult Americans think a young patient is suffering depends on the gender they believe the child to be, according to a study published last month in the Journal of Pediatric Psychology. Those who know the patient as “Samuel” will infer he is in more pain than those who know the patient as “Samantha,” even though Samuel and Samantha are the same 5-year-old with shoulder-length blond hair, a red T-shirt and gym shorts that don’t suggest gender. In a study of 264 adults, participants who were shown video of a child whose finger is pricked at a doctor’s office and told they were watching a boy’s reaction rated his pain, on a scale from 0 (no pain) to 100 (severe pain), as 50.42, while those told that the patient was a girl rated her pain as 45.90. When researchers controlled for explicit gender stereotypes — the belief that boys are more stoic — the difference vanished, suggesting that biases were behind the belief that this particular boy was truly suffering because he was moved to cry out. In a finding that surprised the paper’s authors, the downgrading of female pain was driven by female participants, who were more likely than men to say that the pain of the subject was less severe when told she was a girl. Senate: ISIS still poses stark threat

Trump calls wall negotiations a waste of time

Bipartisan group opposes Trump’s plan to pull U.S. troops from conflict zones

“And American national security interests require continued commitment to our missions there.” The vote is the latest indication of deepening cracks between the Republican Senate and Trump on foreign policy matters. Similar rifts exist within Trump’s own administration, evident this week when the heads of major U.S. intelligence agencies testified to the Senate and contradicted him on the strength of the Islamic State and several other foreign policy matters. Trump’s announcement on Syria, meanwhile, prompted the resignation of Defense Secretary James Mattis. McConnell’s amendment, which is nonbinding, would encourage cooperation between the White House and Congress to develop long-term strategies in both nations, “including a thorough accounting of the risks of withdrawing too hastily.” Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., argued in support of the amendment on the Senate floor, saying Trump’s withdrawal announcement has already undermined U.S. credibility in the region. “This is being used against us right now,” Rubio said. “This is a very dangerous situation. That’s why this is a very bad idea.” Though many Democrats have argued that the U.S. should eventually withdraw from the

U.S. military says airstrike killed 24 al-Shabab extremists in Somalia

also agreed with McConnell that the “precipitous withdrawal” from either country without political resolutions would risk what troops there have already achieved. She voted in favor of the measure. Many of the most liberal members of the Senate — including several Democrats who are eyeing presidential runs in 2020 — voted against the amendment. A handful of Republicans also opposed the amendment. McConnell’s Kentucky colleague, Republican Sen. Rand Paul, missed the vote but said he was against it. “It’s time to bring our troops home from Afghanistan and Syria,” Paul wrote in a tweet, saying he stands with Trump. “It is ludicrous to call withdrawal after 17 years ‘precipitous.’” MARY CLARE JALONICK (AP)

Politics In a bipartisan rebuke to President Trump, the Senate voted 68-23 on Thursday to advance an amendment that would oppose withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria and Afghanistan. The amendment by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., comes after Trump called for a drawdown of troops in both of those countries. The measure says the Islamic State and alQaeda militants still pose a serious threat to the United States, and it warns that “a precipitous withdrawal” of U.S. forces from those countries could “allow terrorists to regroup, destabilize critical regions and create vacuums that could be filled by Iran or Russia.” Trump abruptly tweeted plans for a U.S. pullout from Syria in December, arguing that the Islamic State had been defeated even though his intelligence chiefs have said the group remains a threat. Trump also ordered the military to develop plans to remove up to half of the 14,000 U.S. forces in Afghanistan. McConnell didn’t frame the measure as a reproach to the president, but he said before the vote that “I’ve been clear about my own views on these subjects.” He said he believes the threats remain. “ISIS and al-Qaeda have yet to be defeated,” McConnell said.

politics President Trump offered a pessimistic assessment Thursday of congressional negotiations over border security funding and suggested he’s ready to move forward with construction of his longpromised border wall without the consent of lawmakers. In a spate of tweets and public comments, Trump cast doubt on the likelihood that bipartisan House-Senate negotiations would yield a suitable agreement, saying that Republicans were “wasting their time” talking with Democrats, whom he accused of “playing games.” While castigating Democrats for denying him funding, Trump also claimed that he was well on his way toward building the wall — apparently conflating efforts by his administration to replace existing fencing and construct other relatively modest barriers with progress toward his marquee 2016 campaign promise. “If they don’t have a wall, I don’t even want to waste my time reading what they have,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. His comments came a day after congressional Democrats unveiled a new border security plan as an opening bid in negotiations with Republicans. It included hundreds of millions of dollars for new technology and customs agents but no new money for physical barriers along the U.S.-Mexico divide. John

Sen. McConnell didn’t frame Thursday’s measure as a direct reproach to President Trump, but said he believes ISIS and al-Qaeda are still threats.

What’s next A vote on final passage of the amendment could come early next week. If it succeeds, the language would be added to a wide-ranging foreign policy bill that has been pending on the Senate floor for several weeks. The legislation includes measures supporting Israel and Jordan and slapping sanctions on Syrians involved in war crimes. (AP)

Defense: Case against El Chapo is ‘a fantasy’ A defense attorney for Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman assailed the U.S. case against the Mexican drug lord as “a fantasy,” telling a federal court jury Thursday that the prosecution relied on a parade of cooperating witnesses who “lie, steal, cheat, deal drugs and kill people.” Guzman faces drug and murder conspiracy charges and could spend the rest of his life in a U.S. prison if convicted. The jury is expected to begin deliberating Monday. (AP)

Border officials capture 254 pounds of fentanyl U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials announced Thursday their biggest fentanyl bust ever, saying they captured nearly 254 pounds of the synthetic drug from a secret compartment inside a load of Mexican produce heading into Arizona. Agents also seized nearly 395 pounds of methamphetamine. (AP) BOWLING GREEN, KY.

Heartwarming Much to the trepidation of officials who have repeatedly implored the public to seek proper shelter and avoid being outdoors during this week’s deadly cold snap, a group of homeless people remained in a tent city adjacent to Chicago’s bustling Dan Ryan Expressway. But on Wednesday, the second-coldest day in the city’s history, one unnamed Good Samaritan offered to put up about 70 homeless people in a hotel, the Chicago Tribune first reported. weakened by the freeze-thaw cycle. Scores of vehicles will be left with flat tires and bent rims. In Detroit, where some water mains are almost 150 years old, city workers were dealing with dozens of breaks, said Palencia Mobley, deputy director of the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department. “We’ll have all hands on deck,” Mobley said. Cedar Rapids, Iowa, set a daily record low of minus 30 degrees. The polar vortex was “rotating up into Canada” and not expected to return in the next couple of weeks, Masters said. WEATHER In Illinois, temperatures could rise by 80 degrees within days. In Michigan, melting snow and rain and a 17-mile ice jam on the Muskegon River could lead to flooding. And across the Midwest, the warmer forecast was sure to bring more broken roads and busted water mains. The polar vortex that brought many cities to a standstill was expected to come to a swift end with a rapid thaw that experts say could be unprecedented. But the sudden swing from long johns to short sleeves could create problems of its own. “I don’t think there’s ever been a case where we’ve seen (such a big) shift in temperatures,” in the winter, said Jeff Masters, meteorology director of the Weather Underground firm. “Past record-cold waves have not dissipated this quickly. ... Here we are, going right into springlike temperatures.” On Thursday, the system marched east, spreading arctic conditions over an area spanning from Buffalo to Brooklyn. In western New York, a storm that dumped up to 20 inches of snow gave way to subzero temperatures and face-stinging wind chills. The number of deaths that could be blamed on the cold climbed to at least 15. For the nation’s midsection, relief was as close as the weekend. Rockford, Ill., was at a recordbreaking minus 31 on Thursday morning but should be around 50 degrees Monday. Other previously frozen areas could see temperatures of 55 degrees or higher. The dramatic warm-up will offer a respite from the bonechilling cold. But potholes will appear on roads and bridges

nation+world Dozens are arrested in crackdown on fraud involving student visas IMMIGRATION On its website, the University of Farmington advertised an innovative STEM curriculum that would prepare students to compete in the global economy. Photos showed students on a grassy quad. Tuition was relatively reasonable — $8,500 a year for undergraduates and $11,000 a year for graduate students. But there were no classes taking place. In court filings that were unsealed Wednesday, federal prosecutors revealed that the school was being run by undercover agents working for

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The fake university had been set up in 2015 as part of an elaborate sting operation aimed at ensnaring foreign nationals who had initially come to the United States on student visas. Its “campus” consisted of a small office in a corporate park in the northwestern Detroit suburb of Farmington Hills, Mich. The phony university was “being used by foreign citizens as a ‘pay to play’ scheme,” prosecutors allege. After forking over thousands of dollars, students would provide immigration authorities with evidence that they were enrolled in a full-time educational program. They could then continue to live and work in the United States under a student

was illegal “and that discretion should be used when discussing the program with others,” prosecutors wrote in their indictment, which was filed Jan. 15 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. According to The Detroit News, which first reported on the operation, dozens of University of Farmington students were arrested on immigration violations Wednesday as part of a nationwide sweep and are now potentially facing deportation. In addition, eight people who allegedly worked as “recruiters” for the school and collectively helped at least 600 students remain in the country face federal conspiracy charges. ANTONIA NOORI

HEALTH A new report estimates that nearly half of all U.S. adults have some form of heart or blood vessel disease, a medical milestone that’s mostly due to recent guidelines that expanded how many people are considered to have high blood pressure. The American Heart Association said Thursday that more than 121 million adults had cardiovascular disease in 2016. Taking out those with only high blood pressure leaves 24 million, or 9 percent of adults, who have other forms of disease such as heart failure or clogged arteries. Measuring the burden of diseases shows areas that need to improve, the heart association’s chief science and medical officer, Dr. Mariell Jessup, said in a statement. High blood pressure, which had long been defined as a top reading of at least 140 or a bottom one of 90, dropped to 130 over 80 under guidelines adopted in 2017. It raises the risk for heart attacks, strokes and many other problems, and only about half of those with the condition have it under control. Heart and blood vessel disease is linked to 1 of every 3 deaths in the U.S. and kills more Americans than all forms of cancer and respiratory diseases like pneumonia combined. The report is an annual statistics update by the heart association, the National Institutes of Health and others. MARILYNN MARCHIONE (AP)

super bowl LIII PATRIOTS VS. RAMS | 6:30 P.M. SUNDAY, CBS

The Rams’ mission: Get Brady

The Patriots’ Tom Brady escapes the pass rush of Rams DT Aaron Donald in a 2016 matchup won by New England.

ATLANTA Practically every member of the Los Angeles Rams has a favorite story about defensive tackle Aaron Donald’s feats of athleticism. Defensive end Michael Brockers loved the moment at Carolina in 2016 when Donald beat the Panthers’ left guard and launched himself like Superman, swallowing up Cam Newton while airborne. Cornerback Nickell RobeyColeman preferred the game at San Francisco this season when Donald shredded a double-team and sacked C.J. Beathard — not by grabbing him, but by shoving the 49ers’ center into his own quarterback. “Aaron can do things you didn’t know were possible,” said Rams defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, no stranger to improbable feats himself. Donald is the NFL’s current sacks champion and the only unanimous All-Pro, and almost certainly will win Defensive Player of the Year for a second straight time. But he has a daunting task in the Super Bowl. Donald and the Rams must figure out how to pressure Tom Brady, who completely stumped the New England Patriots’ first two playoff opponents. The Chargers and Chiefs never sacked the 41-year-old superstar

while he picked apart their defenses for 691 yards passing. Donald, who set an NFL record for sacks by an interior lineman with 20.5 this season, believes Los Angeles (15-3) can do what the Chargers and Chiefs couldn’t. “We’ll get to him, but we have to stay patient and don’t get frustrated,” Donald said. “We’ve got a great secondary that will do its job and make sure he doesn’t have easy throws.” The Rams have been assembling the tools for this job all year. In the spring, they signed Suh to a $14 million deal. They also acquired Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters, two elite cornerbacks who can create chances for their pass rush. They gave a six-year, $135 million extension to Donald in August. Then they acquired Dante Fowler from Jacksonville in late October, adding a speedy outside pass-rushing threat to a roster that lacked it. “I knew I was going to fit in with this defense because of A.D. and Suh,” said Fowler, who has 1½ sacks and six quarterback hits in the Rams’ past four games. “They make it easy for everybody else on the defense.” Even if the Rams’ pass-rushers win their individual matchups on the line, Brady’s quick decisions and swift release make him awfully difficult for anyone to touch. L.A. knows it needs to put heat on a QB who hasn’t been sacked this postseason

Three key matchups to the game Jared Goff vs. Devin McCourty During the regular season, the Rams’ QB was second in the NFL with 69 passes of at least 20 yards. Safety McCourty and the Patriots’ secondary have been susceptible to big passing plays, and five Chiefs players had a catch of at least 20 yards in the AFC title game.

Cory Littleton vs. Sony Michel The linebacker and Rams’ leading tackler will try to bottle up Michel, who has rushed for 242 yards and five TDs in two playoff games. The Patriots are 6-0 this season when the rookie rushes for more than 100 yards and just 2-5 when he has fewer than 60 yards on the ground.

L. Joyner vs. Rob Gronkowski Rams safeties Lamarcus Joyner and John Johnson will likely have to mark the 6-foot-6 tight end. Gronk had an awful season but is coming off one of his best games (6 catches, 79 yards) and always seems to come up with clutch plays. JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

the NFL lead with 52 sacks in the regular season, they hit Brady just once and never sacked him in the AFC title game. A week earlier, the Chargers’ dynamic passrushing duo of Melvin Ingram and Joey Bosa never got to him. “That’s crazy,” Brockers said when told of Brady’s sack-free postseason. “He’s the G.O.A.T., but he’s just another quarterback. … It’s our job as D-linemen to get to him, so we’re putting the pressure on ourselves to … try to get him off his spot.” Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips’ 3-4 defense stopped Brady in the AFC title game after the 2015 season. Phillips’ Broncos hit Brady 17 times and made him miserable in the Patriots’ 20-18 loss. Phillips isn’t getting into any specifics of the Rams’ plan versus Brady, camouflaging his sharp mind behind his usual geniality. “Unfortunately for me, I get older, but Tom Brady doesn’t,” Phillips, 71, said. “You don’t stop great offenses. You just try to slow them down.” GREG BEACHAM (AP)

super bowl LIII SUPER QUIZ

Fact or fiction? Think you know everything about the Rams and Patriots? Take our test to see if you can decipher what’s real and what’s not about Sunday’s game. JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

Questions 1. Patriots QB Tom Brady now has more Super Bowl appearances than road playoff games. 2. When Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips was asked how he plans to stop Brady and the Patriots’ offense, he said he’s going to get an earpiece with CBS broadcaster Tony Romo in it to tell him what’s going to happen before each play. 3. During the regular season and playoffs, Rams DT Aaron Donald has had more sacks than Brady has been sacked. 4. Bill Vinovich, the head official from the controversial Rams-Saints NFC title game that had a critical non-call on an obvious pass interference penalty late in the fourth quarter, will be the back

judge in referee John Parry’s sevenperson crew for the Super Bowl. 5. There are six players on the rosters of the Patriots and Rams who are older than L.A. coach Sean McVay, who is the youngest head coach in Super Bowl history. 6. Patriots WR Julian Edelman’s number of career playoff receptions more than doubles the total of the Rams’ top three wide receivers. 7. The Patriots, who are 2.5-point favorites Sunday against the Rams, have never been an underdog in a Super Bowl during the BradyBelichick era. 8. In four seasons, Rams RB Todd Gurley has 46 rushing TDs, which is more than any player in the Patriots’ franchise history.

Answers 1. Fact. Brady has played eight road playoff games, improving to 4-4 after the Patriots’ AFC title game in Kansas City, and this will be his ninth Super Bowl. He and the Patriots have won five titles.

Stephen Gostkowski, 35, Matthew Slater, 33, and Brian Hoyer, 33, are all older than McVay, who turned 33 last week. McVay played against Patriots WR Julian Edelman, 32, twice in college.

2. Fact. Phillips was joking about Romo’s ability to predict play calls on the CBS broadcast … but maybe listening in isn’t such a bad idea.

6. Fact. Edelman is second to only Jerry Rice in NFL postseason history with 105 catches. Brandin Cooks (21), Robert Woods (21) and Josh Reynolds (5) have a combined 47 catches in their postseason careers.

3. Fiction. Donald had an NFL-high 20.5 sacks in the regular season but none in the playoffs. Brady was sacked 21 times in the regular season and hasn’t been sacked in the playoffs. 4. Fiction. While Vinovich is done with football for the season, he did ref last week’s BYU-Saint Mary’s men’s college basketball game — and was heckled by fans. 5. Fact. The Rams’ Andrew Whitworth, 37, and John Sullivan, 33, and the Patriots’ Tom Brady, 41,

7. Fiction. New England was a 14-point underdog 17 years ago when it beat the Rams 20-17 in Super Bowl XXXVI. The Patriots were a pick ’em against Seattle in Super Bowl XLIX and were favored in their other seven Super Bowl appearances of the Brady-Belichick era. 8. Fact. Jim Nance, who played for the Patriots from 1965 to 1971, holds New England’s franchise career record for rushing TDs with 45.

BY THE NUMBERS

How the Rams and Patriots stack up Using the Pro Football Focus database, here are five key stats to know ahead of Sunday’s big game. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

12

The number of pressures allowed by the Patriots’ offensive line this postseason. Tom Brady deserves some credit for his ultra-quick 2.18-second average time to throw during these playoffs — the fastest among all QBs.

68

The number of snaps by Patriots FB James Develin this playoffs. Only 19 fullbacks played that many during the regular season. The Patriots have eight TDs this postseason when Develin is in.

135.3

The passer rating allowed by the Rams’ defense against playaction passes — the highest in the NFL. Brady used the fifth-most play-action of any QB this season (28.4 percent of dropbacks).

20

The number of turnover-worthy throws by Rams QB Jared Goff during the regular season — third most in the NFL. In two playoff games, however, he has served up only one.

1,160

Yards gained by Rams on wide zone runs this season — 379 more than the next-closest team. The concept has netted the Rams 5.3 yards per carry over the course of the season.

CAPITALS VS. FLAMES | 7 P.M. FRIDAY, NBCSWA

Caps eye a return to form

Padres put themselves into Harper sweepstakes Bryce Harper was set to meet Thursday with the San Diego Padres, according to multiple reports, adding a surprise team to a free agency sweepstakes that’s been oddly quiet. The 26-year-old outfielder, who spent the past seven years with the Nationals, has not found a team with spring training two weeks away. Harper reportedly turned down the Nationals’ 10-year, $300 million offer in September.

After a welcome eight-day respite, the Capitals return to the ice Friday night to open a six-game homestand against the Flames.

Washington hit the All-Star break and accompanying bye week on a seven-game losing streak. The Capitals’ longest winless skid in five years pushed them into a tie for second place in the Metropolitan Division. The homestand is crucial because a six-game road trip immediately follows. Here are five storylines worth monitoring as the Capitals look to escape their funk. BEN RABY (FOR EXPRESS)

Defensive struggles

Familiar faces return

The Capitals will need more from Evgeny Kuznetsov. The team’s leading scorer last postseason has struggled since returning from an upper-body injury in November. Kuznetsov, who was briefly demoted to the third line two weeks ago, has scored just twice this season at five-on-five and entered the break with two goals over a 24-game stretch. Forwards Devante Smith-Pelly (25-game scoreless drought), Lars Eller (one goal in his last 17 games) and Brett Connolly (one goal in 15 games) are also seeking more consistency.

The Capitals will be shorthanded against Calgary as Alex Ovechkin serves a one-game suspension for skipping the All-Star Game in favor of extra rest. Ovechkin has said he does not have any lingering injuries, but wanted a few extra days to ensure he is fresh for the stretch run. When he returns Sunday against Boston, Ovechkin will begin play tied with Sergei Fedorov as Russia’s alltime leading scorer in NHL history. Ovechkin’s NHLbest 37 goals this season leave him well positioned for a record eighth career goal-scoring title.

The Capitals could be in the market for a bottomsix forward who could take faceoffs and play on the penalty kill, general manager Brian MacLellan, above, suggested. Washington ranks last in faceoffs this season and 24th on the penalty kill. Has MacLellan’s shopping list grown during the losing streak? Washington’s upcoming stretch could determine how MacLellan approaches the Feb. 25 trade deadline. Andre Burakovsky, who has been limited to six goals and 12 points this season, could be moved to make space for an addition.

One of the staples from the Capitals’ Stanley Cup run last spring — their defensive commitment — was noticeably absent for much of January. Before the break, defenseman Matt Niskanen, above, said the Capitals were struggling with their transition defense, their defensive zone coverage and their puck management. Struggle with one of those areas and it could be a rough night. Struggle with all three and you find yourself in a rut much like this one. The Capitals have been outscored 36-18 in their past seven games.

Although the Capitals returned 18 of the 20 players who dressed in the Stanley Cup Finals last spring, both exceptions make their Washington returns during the upcoming homestand. Jay Beagle, above, returns to Capital One Arena with the Canucks on Tuesday, while goaltender Philipp Grubauer will do the same Feb. 7 with the Avalanche. Beagle was the thirdlongest-tenured player in the organization (behind Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom) before signing a four-year deal with Vancouver on the first day of free agency.

Beal named All-Star reserve

Wizards guard Bradley Beal was voted an NBA AllStar reserve Thursday by Eastern Conference coaches for the second straight year. Through 51 games, Beal is averaging 24.7 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.1 assists — all career highs with the Wizards (22-29). “It’s always, ‘OK, what’s next?’ “ Beal said in September. “I feel like, I was an All-Star so I definitely have to be an All-Star again. You can’t just be a one-stop show and fall off.” The All-Star Game is Feb. 17. (TWP)

CRITIC’S NOTEBOOK

‘Miss Bala’ gets lost in translation

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

‘Widows’ Four widows take on their criminal (and dead) husbands’ last job in an attempt to make millions and save their own lives. “Widows” is not only one of the best crime movies in years, but one that places the heist genre in a fully feminine space. The disparate women don’t have to like one another, but they do have one thing in common that forces them to work together — they’re women in a world that deems them all but worthless. This isn’t “Ocean’s 8”; this is “Heat” led by women scorned.

Delayed reaction

Last November, I wrote about five 2018 movies — all of them critical successes — that I regretted not catching. Since then, I’ve knocked them out and have come up with an overarching theme that encompasses all of them. It’s a little thing I like to call, “Whoops, shoulda seen that earlier.” Not necessarily to include them on my endof-year wrapup (though “Annihilation” and “Widows” did make my Top 10 list), but because if I had seen these five excellent films earlier, I could have talked about them a lot more by now.

‘Annihilation’ I gave in and saw this because a friend wore me down. I will now wear down everyone else until they see it. “Annihilation” is similar to “Widows” in that it’s a genre film (sci-fi, in this case; an allfemale group goes to a place where weird stuff is happening to figure out what that weird stuff is) that is so much more. Science fiction is about examining the human condition in nonhuman situations; “Annihilation” is about what happens to our ideas of womanhood when women are entirely removed from a world with men.

“Jane the Virgin” star Gina Rodriguez and her fans deserve better than “Miss Bala,” Hollywood director Catherine Hardwicke’s disappointingly formulaic remake of a much grittier and bleaker Mexican thriller. That’s no discredit to Rodriguez, who remains genuine and appealing scene after scene as her character, a MexicanAmerican makeup artist, ends up working both sides of a violent conflict between the DEA and Mexican cartel. At times, the film is undeniably satisfying. But if you’re looking for a movie with something substantive to say about Mexico and drug wars, or anything but a PG-13 “You go, girl!” action film, you won’t find it here.

‘BlacKkKlansman’

‘The Death of Stalin’

‘Lean on Pete’

I had heard this was Spike Lee’s best work in years, and it is. “BlacKkKlansman” has so much of Lee’s signature style: his sly wit, his ability to pack an emotional punch seemingly out of nowhere, and (unfortunately) his tendency to hit his points a little too hard and let scenes go on a little too long. Still, the offbeat relevance of the film’s story — the real case of a black police detective who infiltrated the KKK in the 1970s — is tailor-made for Lee. The final moments should send shudders down the spine of every viewer.

A comedic romp set in the immediate aftermath of the death of a genocidal dictator seems like an offbeat choice, but boy did writer-director Armando Iannucci pull it off. A phenomenal ensemble cast — led by Steve Buscemi as Nikita Khrushchev — goes at it as if the characters were on the Soviet version of “Survivor,” trying to outwit, outplay and outlast the other secondtier Communist officers. It’s political intrigue, it’s farcical, it’s hilarious and smart and dark — in short, it’s exactly what satire should be.

This kid-and-a-horse film is very much NOT “Black Beauty.” It’s about what happens to boys (and, consequently, men) who live in a world that consistently tells them their need for emotional connection makes them weak. Charlie Plummer’s performance as a 15-year-old largely on his own vacillates between making you want to hug him and making you want to flee from him in terror. “Widows” and “Annihilation” are about women in community; “Lean on Pete” is about a man in isolation. Both are types of films we need more of.

WARNER BROS.

Batfleck out as Warner Bros. starts search

World War I is brought to life in groundbreaking fashion by the new documentary “They Shall Not Grow Old.”

Innovative doc gives WWI a new dimension ‘They Shall Not Grow Old’ is an emotional and technical marvel FILM REVIEW One of the first things you notice in “They Shall Not Grow Old” — a remarkable new World War I documentary that uses restored footage from more than 100 years ago to tell the story of the men who fought in what has come to be known as “The Great War” — is the teeth. It’s certainly not the only thing. But when director Peter Jackson (“The Lord of the Rings”) took this often grainy black-and-white silent footage from hand-cranked cameras and sharpened it, colorized it, added sound and digitally tweaked the speed to compensate for today’s faster frame rates, several interesting things happened. One of them is that you suddenly can’t help notice how many of the film’s subjects — anonymous British infantrymen, in this case — are missing teeth here and there. Could it be a result of the fact

‘They Shall Not Grow Old’ (R, 99 min.) DIRECTOR: Peter Jackson IN A NUTSHELL: The documentary provides an intimate portrait of World War I by using century-old footage that was restored, colorized and further enhanced.

that these soldiers, as we learn from the film, were issued a single toothbrush to use during their entire tour of duty? It’s a minor detail in a film that is filled with them, one of many fine points that cumulatively add up to a powerful and moving portrait of war and its consequences. Commissioned by England’s Imperial War Museums to commemorate the centennial of the 1918 armistice, and exclusively using footage from that organization’s film archive — along with oral histories recorded by WWI veterans in the 1960s and 1970s — “They Shall Not Grow Old” is a major technical accomplishment. But it’s also a major feat of storytelling, one that mentions

no dates, place names or famous battles, yet nevertheless manages to evoke a profound sense of connection with its subjects. Moving from enlistment to boot camp to the nightmare of trench warfare, the film uses its freshly enhanced imaging (available in 2-D and 3-D screenings) to make the mundane horrors of war — lice, corpse rats, flies, open-air latrines — as vivid as the more hellish ones: the hailstorms of bullets, clouds of yellowish mustard gas, trench foot, gore and shattered bodies. It’s an unexpectedly contemporary-feeling experience, in large part because of the way the faces on the screen seem to reflect those in the audience. “They Shall Not Grow Old” has the effect of a window that has never before been thrown open so wide. It’s a portrait of humanity and inhumanity. The way Jackson presents both, it’s easy to see why the world thought this conflict would be the “war to end all wars.” And it’s painful to realize that it was not. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN

The stand-alone Batman film from director Matt Reeves, below, will hit theaters in June 2021, Warner Bros. announced Wednesday. Ben Affleck was set to star in the film following his performances in “Justice League” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” but a new Caped Crusader will be cast instead. Affleck, who was at one point also set to direct “The Batman,” tweeted that he’s excited to see Reeves’ vision of the film. Warner Bros. also dated the next “Suicide Squad” film — to be written by “Guardians of the Galaxy” filmmaker James Gunn — for 2021, and set an adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Shining” sequel, “Doctor Sleep,” for November this year. Stuck in Gaza, Sundance star misses festival FILM A new documentary called “Gaza” hit screens at the Sundance Film Festival this week, providing a colorful glimpse of life in the blockaded Hamasruled territory. But one of its main subjects, Gaza actor and playwright Ali Abu Yaseen, hasn’t been able to attend the gathering due to the very circumstances depicted in the film. Abu Yaseen had hoped to make his first trip to the U.S. to take part in the festival. But the continued closure of Gaza’s border with Egypt, and Hamas’ bureaucratic inefficiency, made it impossible for him to reach Cairo in time to receive a visa from the American Embassy. “I’m seething with indignation,” he said from his home in the Shati refugee camp in Gaza City. “The dream that I had for the past three months has all but collapsed.” “Gaza” is a contestant in the World Cinema Documentary competition at Sundance. Directed by Irish filmmakers Garry Keane and Andrew McConnell, the work takes a look at everyday life in Gaza, from wars and their traumas to young people’s pastimes and aspirations. Plays written by Yaseen and stage performances by his students appear in the film. “[Hamas] should have pleaded with me to travel and represent Palestine,” Yaseen said, “because this film is more important than a thousand or a million bullets.” FARES AKRAM (AP)

‘A Madea Family Funeral’

‘Birds of Prey’

EXPECTED RELEASE: March 1

EXPECTED RELEASE: Feb. 7, 2020

SUMMARY: In a movie that will force dozens of writers to use the phrase “put the fun in funeral,” Tyler Perry brings Madea back to the big screen, this time to kill someone off. (Well, SHE doesn’t kill him. Probably.) As with many funerals, there is family, comfort food and fighting with relatives over the dead guy’s stuff. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: You know it’s a weak week for trailers when a 30-second teaser gets Twitter atwitter. Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn leads a cast of characters you may not know if you’re not into comics. That’s pretty much all there is to say, but we still have some space to fill. So, how was your week? TGIF, right? Have a great weekend! K.P.K.

@FATHERBONNET, joking about the singer’s Greenprint Project, an initiative that highlights plant-based diets by offering a sweepstakes for one lucky fan to win two tickets to her concerts for the next 30 years by committing to veganism. The prize applies to only one show per tour, but includes shows by Beyoncé’s husband, rapper JAY-Z, and any joint tours the couple does in the future. Many fans have made tentative pledges to go vegan.

“Saturday Night Live” opening line after Donald Trump Jr. referred to the sketch show as “S&L” in a tweet Thursday. Trump Jr.’s interpretation of the show’s abbreviation “SNL” led to intense mockery on Twitter, considering he was raised in New York City, where “SNL” is taped, and he and his dad have been parodied on the show. “SNL” alumnus Bobby Moynihan tweeted: “You dummy.”

“Zara’s new constricted logo is making my lungs constrict with anxiety.” @AMMCKELVEY, reacting to the clothing retailer’s new logo, which displays letters that are overlapping. The redesign is just the second in Zara’s 45-year history. Many Twitter users joked that over time, the letters in the company’s logo would get closer and closer, eventually morphing into a row of indistinguishable text.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Your best bet today is to lead by example. What you do can be imitated by others, and the overall effect can be just what you had hoped. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You must not risk severing a key lifeline today; keep communication open, and you’ll have the information you most need right when you need it. ARIES (March 21-April 19) The stakes are high today, but you won’t be the first one to flinch. You can see things through. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You can control all aspects of a certain project today, but you must wield your power in a way that inspires those around you. THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

You can answer someone else’s unexpected aggression in a way that renders useless most of the weapons he or she has collected.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You

can match someone else’s tactics point for point today, but the result may not be what you had hoped. Things likely will get bogged down. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Someone who has always been on your side may express certain doubts today. You might find yourself in need of a new kind of support. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You are confident and capable, but the same old strategies and tactics aren’t likely to give you what you want today. Try something new.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

Things aren’t likely to pan out today if you remain stationary; you must be mobile and by all means adaptable. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You can give someone precisely what he or she is asking for — but it could take some time. You must not make any hasty moves at this point.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Kid Cudi celebrated his 35th birthday Wednesday at a dinner with Kanye West, Kim Kardashian West, Pete Davidson and Timothee Chalamet. Kardashian West posted photos from the celebration at Japanese restaurant Nobu Malibu to her Instagram story. The get-together came after Davidson blasted West’s appearance on “Saturday Night Live” in September, when the rapper delivered a pro-Trump rant after the broadcast had ended. “Being mentally ill is not an excuse to act like a jackass,” Davidson said of West on the subsequent week’s episode of “SNL.” (EXPRESS)
