A crook’s nasty stunt makes $25,000 unicycle disappear

Goodwill welcomes donations — unless they might blow up

Not-so-easy rider: Road hazard swallows up man and motorcycle

It was discreetly packed in a black bag, but a 7-foot, $25,000 unicycle used by the Red Panda Acrobat for her plate-juggling routine was stolen last week from San Francisco airport. Police released surveillance photos that show a man wheeling away the bag containing the unicycle owned by Rong Niu, who entertains at halftime of sports events. Niu, who said she had the bike for 30 years, offered a $2,000 reward to get it back. (AP)

Authorities this week said a grenade launcher, loaded with a live grenade, was left with other donated items at a Goodwill store in Manatee, Fla. The store manager told deputies that the grenade launcher had come in a shipment from another store. The employees at the other location said they sent it along because they didn’t know what it was. Deputies secured the grenade in a hazmat locker and also stored the launcher. (AP)

A motorcyclist in Augusta, Ga., got the ride of his life Wednesday when a sinkhole opened up in a parking lot and swallowed him and his bike. City firefighters pulled the man from the hole, which appeared to be about 10 feet deep. He had minor injuries. Augusta Utilities Director Tom Wiedmeier said the hole opened up near a storm drain. Recent sinkholes have been blamed on leaking underground pipes. (AP)

Does D.C. stand for ‘dusting central’?

Local pups can compete in their own Puppy Bowl

PERSPECTIVE As I looked out the window on a late January morning, all that was left from an overnight snow shower was a speck of snow on the mulch, and a perfectly dry road. And yet, here I am with two kids home from school — again. I’m a meteorologist, and I’m a parent. Which means I love snow and, of course, I love my kids. Give me a real snow day, and I’ll eagerly embrace a day off playing with them outside. Just one thing: There’s got to be enough snow to make a snowball. D.C. has stood for “dusting central” this winter, and the delays and cancellations keep piling up. It wasn’t always like this. I grew up here and remember many a time going to bed hoping for a snow day, only to wake up to a dusting and a school day. Of course, safety comes first. When there’s real snow on the

ground or on the way — or even worse, ice — schools should always err on the side of caution. But when the dusting delay or coating closure happens again and again, year after year, it has consequences that ripple through the entire region. Parents are left scrambling for child care and, if they can’t find it, having to explain why they can’t get to work. We’ve also got bills to pay and conference calls that can’t be interrupted with “Will you play with me?” These days, the mere mention of snow, no matter how little or low of a chance, strikes

worry in the minds of working parents. Worry about work that won’t get done, meetings that will have to be canceled and children who will need to be entertained. The stress is real. I’ve heard it from others and know it myself. So where do we go from here? I wish I had all the answers, but I don’t. I just know we can do better than this. Perhaps I can put some thought to this on the next snow day. For now, though, it’s time to get the kids to school, two hours late. Afterward, I’ll try to squeeze a week’s worth of work into half a day.DAN STILLMAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation is hosting its first DPR Puppy Bowl. The competition is modeled after the Animal Planet “Puppy Bowl” that airs before the Super Bowl. Local puppies (no older than 20 weeks) will score points for dropping balls in the opposing team’s end zone to score touchdowns, according to a press release. Va. poised to approve medical marijuana oil HEALTH A bill that would allow physicians to broadly prescribe a form of medical marijuana received preliminary approval in the Virginia House of Delegates on Thursday and seems likely to become law, its sponsors say, after years of failed attempts. The legislation, HB 1251, would permit the use of non-hallucinogenic marijuana or cannabis extracts known as cannabidiol oil or THC-A oil to treat any diagnosed condition or disease. Scientific studies indicate that the oils can reduce nausea and

alleviate pain, and also may slow the growth of and kill some cancer cells. After a final vote in the House on Friday, the legislation would move to the Senate, where sponsors of the House bill say it also has strong support. “This allows another option for residents of Virginia, and it does provide some assistance for pain management and may give people an alternative to … opioids,” said Del. Benjamin Cline, R-Lexington, the chief sponsor of the House bill. Similar bills have failed for

years in the state legislature, although a more narrow statute passed in 2015 allows Virginians to use the cannabis oils to treat “intractable epilepsy.” But that law does not provide any way for the drug to be produced in the state or for patients to secure a doctor’s permission to obtain it. The District of Columbia and 28 states, including Maryland, have legalized most or all types of marijuana products for medical purposes. Nine states and the District have also legalized the drug for recreational use.

DACA dominates GOP talks POLITICS President Trump asked lawmakers gathered in West Virginia at the yearly GOP policy retreat to embrace a controversial White House framework as they prepare for a coming congressional debate on immigration. Trump’s request comes as his party remains divided on the issue, with a March deadline looming for the end of a program that protects 690,000 young immigrants from deportation. He said that his offer potentially giving millions of undocumented immigrants a path to citizenship, in return for $25 billion in border wall funding and new curbs on legal immigration — such as cuts to family immigration visas, which Republicans call “chain migration” — was meant to force Democrats into a political bind while showing a serious Republican front. “We have to be willing to give a little in order for our country to gain a whole lot,” he said. The push to reach some sort of consensus on immigration was put on the front burner by Trump’s decision to cancel the

Trump has set out a GOP framework for legislation protecting DACA recipients and other “Dreamers” who were brought to the U.S. as children and remain here illegally. In his speech Thursday, as

DACA fix, the border security, ending chain migration and the visa lottery program reforms,” she said. “There’s still a lot of work that needs to be done.” Last month, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said he would open debate on an immigration bill if a bipartisan accord was not reached by Feb. 8. According to the White House, Trump was set to request that “the framework we submitted be the bill that the Senate votes on.” However, an ad-libbing Trump skipped that, delivering a robust case for the framework. “The Republican position on immigration is the center mainstream view of the American people, with some extra strength at the border and security at the border added in,” he said. Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., chairman of the hard-right House Freedom Caucus, said Thursday that conservatives are opposed to a “special pathway” to citizenship such as the one proposed. In the Senate, where GOP leaders will need Democratic votes to advance any immigration bill, there has been appetite for a compromise bill. Still, Democrats and Republicans in the chamber remain far apart. MIKE DEBONIS AND SEAN SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Heart risks cited from treatment of breast cancer The American Heart Association issued a stark warning Thursday for women with breast cancer: Lifesaving therapies such as chemotherapy and radiation can cause heart failure and other serious cardiac problems, sometimes years after treatment. The AHA said patients and doctors shouldn’t avoid the treatments but instead work to prevent or minimize cardiac risks. In many ways, the statement published Thursday in the journal Circulation is trying to change the mindset of women diagnosed with breast cancer who consider it the biggest threat to their health. It noted that breast cancer survivors who are 65 and older and were treated for their cancer are more likely to die of cardiovascular problems than breast cancer. Almost 48 million women in the U.S. have heart disease, compared with 3.3 million women with breast cancer, the AHA said. It said an unprecedented number of women are surviving the disease yet face a risk of developing heart problems, in part because of their cancer treatments. The AHA said the medical community needs to keep that risk in mind. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society, noted that heart failure caused by a chemo drug like doxorubicin is treated differently than heart failure from a heart attack. Trump plans memo release Officials say document is likely to come out without redactions

Polish Senate backs Holocaust complicity bill

GETTY IMAGES

POLITICS Over the strong objections of his own Justice Department, President Trump will clear the way for the publication of a classified memo on the Russia investigation that Republicans say shows improper use of surveillance by the FBI, White House officials said Thursday. The memo, prepared by Republicans on the House intelligence committee, is said to allege FBI misconduct in the initial stages of its investigation of potential ties between Russia and Trump’s 2016 campaign. Trump’s Justice Department and Democrats furiously lobbied Trump to stop the release, saying it could harm national security and mislead the public. A White House official said Congress would probably be informed of the decision Friday, adding Trump was “OK” with its release. A second White House official said Trump was likely to declassify the congressional memo but the precise method for making it public was still being figured out. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity. The FBI’s stance means that Trump, by allowing the memo’s release, would be openly defying his own FBI director. It also suggests a clear willingness by FBI Director Christopher Wray to challenge a president who just months ago fired his

predecessor, James Comey. The House intelligence panel voted along party lines Monday to put the memo out, giving Trump five days to reject the release under committee rules. But Trump also has the power to declassify the document himself and either release it or hand it to Congress to release. One of the White House officials said the memo would be in “Congress’ hands” after Trump declassified it and that there were unlikely to be any redactions to the document. Trump has said he wants the memo released even after the FBI declared Wednesday that it has “grave concerns” about its accuracy. Senior FBI officials have also warned that it could set a dangerous precedent. The document was written as part of an effort to reveal what Republicans say are surveillance abuses by the FBI and the Justice

Department early in the Russia investigation. Democrats call the memo an attempt by Republicans to distract attention from the investigation into Russian meddling in the election that sent Trump to the White House. Democrats on the intelligence panel made a last-ditch effort Wednesday evening to stop the release, saying it had been “secretly altered” by the Republicans who wrote it. California Rep. Adam Schiff said in a letter to the House Intelligence Committee chairman, Republican Devin Nunes of California, that committee Democrats had discovered changes that were made after the vote Monday. “The White House has therefore been reviewing a document since Monday night that the committee never approved for public release,” Schiff said in the letter.

Schiff asked Nunes for another vote on the memo, but Nunes spokesman Jack Langer said the committee vote was “procedurally sound.” Trump has been telling confidants in recent days that he believes the document will validate his concerns that the FBI and Justice Department conspired against him, according to one outside adviser familiar with those conversations. South Dakota Sen. John Thune, the No. 3 Senate Republican, said the Senate intelligence committee hasn’t seen the memo but should before it comes out. He also urged the House committee to listen to the Justice Department. “I think they need to pay careful attention to what our folks who protect us have to say about how this bears on our national security,” Thune said. POLAND Poland’s Senate has backed legislation that will regulate Holocaust speech, a move that has already strained relations with both Israel and the United States. The bill proposed by Poland’s ruling conservative Law and Justice party and passed early Thursday could see individuals facing up to three years in prison for intentionally attempting to falsely attribute the crimes of Nazi Germany to Poland. It was approved by the lower house last week. The bill has yet to become law, as it requires the approval from President Andrzej Duda, who has supported it. Although the bill exempts artistic and research work, it has raised concerns that the Polish state will decide itself what it considers to be historic facts. The bill has already sparked a diplomatic dispute with Israel and drawn calls from the U.S. for a reconsideration. Though Deputy Justice Minister Patryk Jaki suggested Israel had been consulted on the bill and voiced no objections, many in Israel have argued that the move is an attempt to whitewash the role some Poles played in the killing of Jews during World War II. Poland’s government argues that it is fighting against the use of phrases like “Polish death camps” to refer to camps operated by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland during World War II. ‘Why can’t I have my life back?’ In Puerto Rico, where nearly one-third of schools still don’t have power, students are learning in the dark

Students pay attention during an eighth-grade math class at a middle school lacking power in Loiza, Puerto Rico.

Teaching about trauma

EDUCATION On a warm January morning, 17-year-old Neida Ortiz Torres awoke in a tent pitched outside her mold- and mosquito-infested house. She walked inside, passing through the living room, where school portraits and academic medals still hang. In pitch black, she put on her school uniform and Converse sneakers, relying on the glow of her cellphone. Then it was off to the bus stop and to a high school still grappling with intermittent blackouts and water outages. Neida and her 7-year-old brother, Julio, lost so much when Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico on Sept. 20 — clothing, schoolwork, books and then, after the floodwaters receded, days and days of school. Julio did not return to class until late October, and Neida in mid-November. In other parts of the island, children did not return until December, missing nearly three months. Even then, things were far from normal. Neida’s English teacher left the island after the storm and was not replaced for weeks. Julio’s school still has no power. “Why can’t I have my life back?” Neida asked. Hurricane Maria devastated what was already one of the nation’s largest and poorest school systems, a district of about 347,000 students where nearly all qualified for free meals. Even now, the storm hampers the dayto-day operation of schools. By the time classes resumed after winter break, the island’s education department had decided to close 21 schools because of damage or flagging enrollment. More than 25,000 students had fled the island — many without their parents — in search of more stable schooling in the continental U.S. Nearly 200 educators

joined them, exacerbating a teacher shortage and leaving scores of students unsupervised during parts of the school day. Teachers struggle to get the basic resources they need to do their jobs, shelling out their own money for food when cafeterias run out and for projectors and

air conditioners. “It’s an injustice,” said Aida Diaz, president of one of Puerto Rico’s teachers unions. “We want to give [children] the best, but it’s impossible.” Puerto Rico is enduring the longest power outage in modern U.S. history, with every aspect

Trauma has complicated school for many students in Puerto Rico. Students grow fearful when it rains and have difficulty focusing. Teachers have addressed the storm head-on: Some are teaching the science behind hurricanes, and a high school in Rio Grande assigns students to work on a guide about recovering from a natural disaster, using their firsthand knowledge. Even for young students, the storm was something teachers could not ignore. “When it rains, they get anxious the school will flood,” said Sonia Vazquez, a kindergarten teacher. “You have to calm them.” (TWP)

of the school day affected on campuses that lack power. Of the 1,110 schools that remain open, nearly one-third have no electricity. Administrators draft official documents by hand in darkened offices, and students cluster near windows so they can read without straining.

South Sudan rebels vow “guerrilla war” if peace talks fail

Schools without power, such as Escuela Agapito Lopez Flores, mark the start of the day with a teacher ringing a hand bell — a relic that had to be resurrected because electronic bell systems remained inoperable. In Julio’s dim classroom, doors and windows must be left open to allow in sunlight and air — but noise and mosquitoes invade, too. His teacher, Sonya Rosario, quizzed the class on what they did during their holiday break. One girl lamented that she did not get as many gifts for this year’s Three Kings holiday as the year before. “In this crisis, when we don’t have electricity,” Rosario said, “the most important thing is that we have a lot of love in our family.” On an island reeling from both a natural disaster and a long-standing financial crisis, the stakes for schools are high. Those that lost significant numbers of students worry they might close. Those fears were confirmed last week when Gov. Ricardo Rosello announced that he aims to shutter more than 300 schools amid expectations that enrollment will plunge 10 percent in the coming school year. Many of those students who left landed in Florida, the epicenter of the exodus from Puerto Rico. Schools in Orlando have enrolled nearly 3,000 students from the island in recent months. Oxzuen Casta Rodriguez, a 16-year-old from Rincon, was among those who made the agonizing decision to leave behind his mother and stepfather to live with his father in Orlando and attend school there. “The pros being that I’m going to get a good education,” Oxzuen said. “The cons being my family, my friends, the roots that I have in Puerto Rico.” MORIAH BALINGIT (THE WASHINGTON POST)

SUPER BOWL LII | PATRIOTS VS. EAGLES, 6:30 P.M. SUNDAY, NBC

Never counted out

In the Brady-Belichick era, the Patriots have become the toughest team to put away NEW ENGLAND The legend was forged in the snow 16 years ago on a frigid New England night that ended in controversy. The Patriots were led by a 24-year-old quarterback, a sixth-round pick who never won sole possession of the snaps in college yet somehow managed to keep the Patriots’ franchise passing leader off the field when he returned from injury. Unseating Drew Bledsoe was the first sign of Tom Brady’s greatness. On Jan. 19, 2002, the Patriots trailed the Raiders by three with 1:50 left in a divisional playoff game. Brady feigned a pass and tucked his arm as Charles Woodson closed in. The ball popped out. Oakland recovered. New England appeared to be beaten. But, because officials ruled that Brady was attempting a forward pass, the Patriots kept the ball. Brady set up a tying field goal. In overtime, he completed his first playoff comeback — a signature of his illustrious career.

Entering Super Bowl LII on Sunday in Minneapolis, Brady has directed 11 game-winning drives in the postseason, the most of all time and nearly double the total for the next man on the list. More than any other quarterback, more than any other team, Brady and the Patriots require 60 minutes or more of perfection from an opponent to be beaten. That’s the task the Eagles face Sunday. Brady’s list of clinching drives in playoff games begins with the “tuck rule game” and stretches over 17 seasons. Five Super Bowl titles are embedded between the bookends. Arguably the most memorable was last year’s Houdini act, a rally from a 28-3 second-half deficit against the Falcons. Just two weeks ago, Brady tossed two touchdowns after the Patriots trailed the Jaguars by 10 in the fourth quarter of the AFC championship. In the seven Super Bowls that Brady has started, only the Giants have been able

to stamp out his comeback bids. “You can never have a safe lead with (No.) 12 at the helm,” Jacksonville safety Tashaun Gipson told AP. “... That’s Tom Brady, the greatest to ever lace up the cleats at the quarterback position.” That’s why Philadelphia coach Doug Pederson, less than a week removed from beating the Vikings

with his own unlikely starter at quarterback, said the Eagles couldn’t afford to be entranced by the New England mystique. “You know what? If I make this all about them, we’re in trouble,” Pederson told reporters. As much as New England’s ability to summon comebacks seems mystical and zombie-like, it’s firmly rooted in the workman’s mentality. That comes from Bill Belichick, who distills the poetry in victory down to, “Do your job.” For 17 seasons, through a litany of distractions including Deflategate and reports of internal strife this year, the Patriots’ meticulous coach has them prepared for every possible scenario. In the Super Bowl three year ago, Malcolm Butler sealed the game with a goal-line interception against a quick slant he’d practiced defending that week. Meanwhile, at age 40, Brady has ensured that no one has done to him what he did to Bledsoe.

If betting on the spread (Patriots -4.5) seems too boring, bookmaker William Hill has 948 propositional wagers that are a little more creative. Make these three with your friends. RICK SNIDER (FOR EXRESS)

Eagles can soar: 4 keys for Philly to hoist trophy It’s so easy to take New England over Philadelphia quarterback Tom Brady has won a record five championships, including in 2005 against the Eagles in Jacksonville, Fla. But he’s also lost twice. For the Eagles to win their first championship in the Super Bowl era, they must limit Brady enough to make it a low-scoring game. Here are four keys needed for a Philadelphia victory.

1

Get a pass rush

This is the difference in the game. If the Eagles harass Brady, especially in the fourth quarter, then Philadelphia wins. If they don’t, well, ask Jacksonville how that works. The front four of the Eagles’ Wide 9 scheme uses depth to wear down offensive lines. New England allowed 35 sacks this season, and Jacksonville sacked Brady three times with seven more hits in the AFC title game. But the Patriots tend to protect Brady best in the fourth quarter, which is how he threw two touchdowns against the Jags. The Eagles need to stick to four-man rushes because Brady will burn them with short passes if they blitz an extra man.

2

Let Foles be himself

Nick Foles doesn’t need to outplay Brady. Putting that kind of pressure on himself would cause turnovers. Foles is smart enough to play to his strengths — throwing short to Zach Ertz and long to Torrey Smith while relying on the run. The QB comes off an NFC title game in which he passed for 352 yards with three TDs, but the Pats won’t underestimate him the way the Vikings did. Foles is 4-1 since replacing injured starter Carson Wentz and wouldn’t be the worst passer to win a Super Bowl. Baltimore’s Trent Dilfer (SB XXXV) gets that crown, while Super Bowl XLVII winner Joe Flacco isn’t exactly on his way to a Hall of Fame career, either.

in Sunday’s Super Bowl. After all, Patriots

3

Key on Gronk

Rob Gronkowski has been Brady’s safety net at tight end since 2010. But New England is still 20-6 when Gronkowski is out. He had only one catch before suffering a concussion in the AFC title game, leading the Patriots to rely on their much smaller — and quicker — targets. Gronkowski cleared concussion protocol and has been practicing most of the week. The Eagles need to shut him down, especially in the red zone. Brady likes to use Gronk to beat the blitz, so the Eagles will have

to be smart with their defensive calls. Philly should focus on Gronk and force Brady to rely more on receivers Danny Amendola and Brandin Cooks.

4

Trick Belichick

When the NFL ruled in 2016 that touchbacks would put the ball on the 25-yard line, the Patriots’ Bill Belichick tried to limit kicks into the end zone. New England allowed only 18.9 yards per return this season, third-best in the NFL. It also forced an NFL-high 58 returns, more than twice the number of most teams.

Belichick relies on coverage units to force turnovers and lengthen the field. The Eagles should get the ball away from returner Kenjon Barner, who’s better on punts, to Wendell Smallwood, who scored on an 86-yard kick return against the Redskins in 2016. Philadelphia should let Barner receive a kick, but then lateral to Smallwood. Catch the Pats off-guard. But beware: This gamble only works once. Matchups to tilt the game These individual battles could be deciding factors in what should be a tight title bout

WASHINGTONPOST.COM FANCY STATS

Patriots benefit the most from penalty calls Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins vs. Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski

Eagles wide receiver Nelson Agholor vs. Patriots safety Devin McCourty

The matchup: The Eagles made a brilliant move in 2016 when they hired defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz — who helped Albert Haynesworth and Ndamukong Suh become stars — and matched him with Cox, who is rated by Pro Football Focus as the No. 2 interior defender in the NFL. Andrews will have to help his guards on double-teams and keep Cox from shooting gaps.

The matchup: When healthy, Gronkowski is one of the few players in the league who’s truly impossible to guard. Jenkins, Philadelphia’s most versatile defender, is one of the few players who can come close. Gronkowski missed last year’s Super Bowl but caught a touchdown pass when the Pats faced Seattle in 2015.

The matchup: In his third season, Agholor became something of unicorn — a personnel decision that ex-coach Chip Kelly got right. The 2015 first-round pick had eight touchdown catches after hauling in three in his first two years. The fleet-footed wideout may stretch the field deep, where McCourty patrols the back end.

Advantage, Eagles: Andrews grades out well as PFF’s sixth-best center, but the undrafted, third-year pro has too tall of a task here.

Advantage, Patriots: Jenkins’ wide range of skills could turn against him if he gets worn out covering slot receivers before having to leap up and battle for jump balls with Gronkowski.

Advantage, Patriots: McCourty is a converted corner who has spent eight seasons under coach Bill Belichick, which means speed and miscommunication likely won’t be problems.

Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson vs. Patriots linebacker Kyle Van Noy

Eagles linebacker Mychal Kendricks vs. Patriots tailback Rex Burkhead

Eagles quarterback Nick Foles vs. Patriots defensive end Trey Flowers

The matchup: After missing a combined 14 starts because of suspensions for performanceenhancing drugs in his first four seasons, Johnson has kept his record clean while earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors for the first time. Van Noy is second on the Pats in sacks (5.5), and New England will likely stunt and send him from different angles to try to confuse Philadelphia.

The matchup: Both players are a little undersized for their positions, which puts the onus on both to perform in the passing game. At weakside linebacker, Kendricks (6 feet, 240 pounds) may find himself in coverage against Burkhead, who has scored eight total touchdowns in his first year with the Patriots.

The matchup: With Carson Wentz sidelined, the avalanche of doubt that fell on quarterback Nick Foles didn’t affect him and instead gave the Eagles a rallying point. Flowers, who made nine tackles in the AFC championship, led the Pats with 6.5 sacks in the regular season and is a rising star in New England at age 24.

Advantage, Patriots: The Pats have a knack for getting every weapon on the offense involved. In last year’s Super Bowl, tailback James White caught 14 passes. This could be Burkhead’s year.

Advantage, Eagles: The book on Foles is that he has a slow release and is stiff in the pocket, but he’s hung in well and hasn’t committed a turnover in the playoffs. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

Advantage, Eagles: Johnson has been one of the most vocal, confident players for the Eagles all year. He won’t get shaken up Sunday.

Aussie Open champ, world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki commits to play Citi Open in D.C.

Social media buzzed with conspiracy theories after the Patriots were flagged for a single, 10-yard penalty in the AFC title game. That was the fewest called on a team in the postseason since the 2011 AFC title game, when New England drew one flag against Baltimore. There’s nothing concrete to support actual bias, but the numbers show that refs have been kind to New England. The Patriots received 50 first downs via penalty in the regular season, the most in the NFL. Their net penalty margin (plus-27) and net penalty yard differential (plus-313) rank second and first, respectively, when you include the playoffs The Patriots also had the highest rate of offensive drives with one or more defensive penalties called on their opponent during the regular season, with 32 percent getting the benefit of at least one call. Gene Steratore, above, will lead the seven-person crew of officials on the field Sunday in Minneapolis. He has officiated 23 Patriot games, and in those games 49 percent of the calls have gone in the Pats’ favor. The other six members of his crew have all worked in games in which New England had 52 to 57 percent of penalties go in its favor. Since 2002, the team with the better penalty differential won the Super Bowl over 73 percent of the time. NEIL GREENBERG

Arbitration court reverses doping bans for 28 Russians

Flu keeps Duke students from camping for tickets

All 30 major league ballparks will have expanded protective netting that reaches to at least the far ends of each dugout by opening day, MLB announced Thursday. The league issued recommendations for protective netting or screens in December 2015, encouraging teams to have it in place between the ends of the dugouts closest to home plate. The push for an expansion increased last year after a series of spectator injuries. A boy was struck on the head by a portion of a broken bat at Yankee Stadium in May, a fan was hit by a foul ball in July, and a young girl was injured by a 105 mph foul ball in September. (AP)

Citing “insufficient evidence,” the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned Olympic doping bans for 28 Russians on Thursday, putting the IOC policy on the country in turmoil. The ruling was set to reinstate seven Russian medals from the 2014 Sochi Olympics, including gold in men’s skeleton and men’s 50-kilometer cross-country skiing. The 28 athletes could seek late entry into the PyeongChang Olympics — which begin Feb. 8 — but the IOC said the lack of a sanction won’t automatically trigger an invitation. Eleven athletes saw their appeals rejected in men’s bobsled, women’s cross-country skiing and women’s hockey. (AP)

Duke’s famed Krzyzewskiville will be a ghost town for a while because of flu concerns. School officials said Thursday that students in the tent village outside Cameron Indoor Stadium have received an indefinite grace period to return to their dorms without hurting their chances to get tickets for the North Carolina game March 3. Larry Moneta, Duke vice president for student affairs, said in a letter to parents that the school has “elected to take a cautious approach” but hopes to have Krzyzewskiville back to normal soon. It’s a Duke tradition for students to camp out in tents to claim the best seats for the Tar Heels game. (AP)

For those of us who are easily distracted, not having a space dedicated to working can lead to lower levels of productivity. For others, this will result in working in bed or on the couch, which can cause back and neck pain from bad posture. We’ve rounded up four ways that you can have a workspace without sacrificing your oh-sovaluable space. While the examples are from Ikea, there are plenty of other stores that sell similar items.

‘In the Fade’ has a vital message

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

Safe distance: Our gods, our money and a hungry boy “Bilal: A New Breed of Hero” is a movie you may not have heard of that tells a story you may not have heard of. It was all news to me, anyway. This animated film that is clearly gunning for some Outstanding Cartoon Eyebrows award (seriously, the movie is visually stunning at times, but the eyebrows are superlative) tells the story of Bilal ibn Rabah, Islam’s first muezzin — the person who calls Muslims to prayers. The story begins in the sixth century with Bilal as a child, dreaming of becoming a warrior. Then his mother is killed and he and his sister are taken into what at first looks like Generic Cartoon Arabian City;

watch with a close eye and you can eventually tell that it’s Mecca (this is the story of the movie; the real Bilal’s historical biography is different, which the movie tells you upfront). Bilal grows up in slavery, converts to Islam — though I don’t remember the words “Muslim” or “Islam” being spoken in the film — and, after being freed, leads his compatriots into battle against those who oppressed him. Thanks to falling down a Wikipedia hole, I believe this was the Battle of Badr, fought on March 13, 624, against the Quraish, a mercantile tribe that controlled Mecca. Did I include all that information here just to make my editor fact-check it? Who knows? So “Bilal,” the United Arab

Emirates’ first animated feature, tells an old story that was new to me — except for the parts that weren’t. In one scene, for example, a boy is begging on the street. Everyone walks right by him on their way to toss a coin into a bowl held by a statue of one of their gods. The pile of money in the idol’s bowl grows and grows; the boy’s bowl stays empty. I’ve seen that story before. I see that story daily. We all have. It’s easier to toss a coin into a statue’s bowl — or share a Facebook post or run a 5K to benefit a pink-ribboned charity that raises “awareness” — than it is to look into the eyes of a hungry boy. The statue, after all, is clean and silent and doesn’t judge. The

boy probably stinks, has lice and (the most difficult thing of all to bear) reminds you that you will go to bed with a full stomach and he will not. To directly give money to someone who makes you uncomfortable makes you realize your position of power over another human: You have; he lacks. Of course, I’m not saying we shouldn’t support charities or organizations that truly, actively support people in need. But what this scene in “Bilal” illustrates is that we can’t let those organizations’ primary purpose be separating us from those they help. That statue served as a barrier so people didn’t have to confront the real face of poverty standing right there. And that functions well for the religion — which very well might have told its adherents it would give some of that money to the poor — because it keeps the faith in business. The only person who doesn’t reap any rewards from this system is the boy with the bowl. “Bilal” is an old, old story. And one sad part of it is still being written.

IN A NUTSHELL: Thrown into a world of greed and injustice, a boy finds the courage to make a change.

Fatih Akin’s Germanlanguage drama “In the Fade” feels urgently relevant. Set in Hamburg, it’s the story of a woman, played by German-born actress Diane Kruger, whose husband and son are killed in a bombing. But here, the tired screen stereotypes about terrorism are reversed, with immigrants of Muslim background as the crime’s victims, and neo-Nazis its perpetrators. The film’s weakness lies in its villains, however, as they’re underdeveloped as characters and their motives go unexplained. Akin’s mission, it would appear, is not to help us understand the rise in xenophobia but its often overlooked victims. It’s a deeply unsettling film — delivering a message that can’t be ignored. The buzzy moviegoing service has 1.5M users, but is it right for you? FILM Frequent moviegoing is an expensive habit, but MoviePass, a service that charges $9.95 a month and allows you to see one film per day, is changing the game. The company now has more than 1.5 million subscribers and pays theaters full price for each ticket, hoping to eventually make money by attracting studios as investors. But MoviePass recently sparked an uproar when it realized it would do just fine if it pulled out of 10 high-traffic AMC theaters in cities such as Boston and New York. CEO Mitch Lowe attributed the decision to the company’s desire to “strive for mutually beneficial relationships.” AMC executives have explicitly stated that the theater chain has no intention of sharing the admissions and concessions revenue that MoviePass claims it has had a hand in generating. Many people are inclined to stick with MoviePass amid this feud, but won’t deny that dropping theaters affects the service’s overall value. So, in the

spirit of fairness, here are some points to consider if you’re on the fence about signing up.

As of now, MoviePass works at many local theaters MoviePass may be worth the 10 bucks a month for those who live in Washington, where the MoviePass app indicates it works at AMC Loews Georgetown, AMC Loews Uptown, AMC Mazza Gallerie, Regal Gallery Place, the Avalon Theatre, the Miracle Theatre and Angelika Pop-Up at Union Market, plus more theaters in the suburbs. (If you’re a Costco member, it’s only $89.99 for a full year.) But if you prefer ArcLight Cinemas or Landmark Theatres, you’re out of luck.

You have to show up in person to get tickets Though MoviePass has no blackout dates (meaning you can even see movies on opening nights), it doesn’t let you buy tickets online. This means you either have to get to the theater earlier — on the same day of the showing — to get your ticket, or show up right before and risk the film selling out.

MoviePass may be just the ticket The business model When Netflix co-founder Mitch Lowe took over MoviePass as CEO in June 2016, his goal was to get MoviePass customers to visit the theater as often as possible. The more movies its subscribers see, the more data it rakes in — which is the key to the company’s potential success, according to Eric Wold, an analyst with B. Riley FBR, a financial services company. While most theater chains track their own customers’ habits, Wold says MoviePass is the first service that can track moviegoers across nearly all theaters in America. Those insights could be valuable to the restaurants and retailers situated around theaters. The service also has a direct line to avid moviegoers, which benefits the film studios in terms of movie promotion. (TWP)

movie ticket with MoviePass works like this: Upon signing up, members are sent a debit card. When you’re ready to see a film, you go to the theater and check in to the screening on the MoviePass app. MoviePass then loads the exact price of one movie ticket to your debit card, which you then use to pay at the theater. (According to the MoviePass website, your membership is also

A feud tugs at a societal conflict in ‘The Insult’

Those tickets are simply too expensive for the service to afford. For some, this is not a deal-breaker, but for others — such as fans of superhero blockbusters or Christopher Nolan films — this could be a problem.

FILM REVIEW The dispute that sets Lebanese drama “The Insult” in motion is a petty thing: A Palestinian Muslim working in Beirut fixes a broken drainpipe in a Christian man’s apartment, only to watch as the tenant inexplicably loses his temper and destroys the new pipe. The squabble escalates, spiraling out of their control and turning it all into a national crisis. The apartment’s resident is a volatile man named Tony (Adel Karam), who demands an apology from the worker, Yasser (Kamel El Basha). When Yasser shows up to make amends, he’s greeted with the sounds of a vintage anti-Palestinian rant coming from Tony’s TV. Then Tony tells Yasser, “I wish Ariel Sharon had wiped you all out.” Tony gets a punch to the gut. From there, the film unfolds as a courtroom drama, after Tony files charges against Yasser. This Ziad Doueiri-directed movie, which was just nominated for an Oscar for foreign language film, is a worthy contender, with subtly powerful performances from both El Basha and Karam, and its themes of suffering and discrimination in a society where old wounds constantly threaten a delicate balance of order. But because nothing is ever simple, the audience’s handle on the characters remains always just out of reach — as it should be. “The Insult” doesn’t offer easy answers — just a lot of questions worth pondering.

nontransferable, meaning your pal can’t use your debit card since it is linked to your smartphone.) This type of transaction is no problem for solo moviegoers. But if you’re a MoviePass member going to a film with your noncardholding friends who bought tickets online days in advance, you risk not sitting together (if the theater has reserved seating) or showing up to a sold-out screening.

‘Ant-Man and The Wasp’

‘The First Purge’

EXPECTED RELEASE: July 6

EXPECTED RELEASE: July 4 (get it?)

SUMMARY: Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man is cool, but the new trailer is basically dominated by Evangeline Lilly as The Wasp — seriously, she looks so cool, kicking and punching and quipping, and it all suggests that the order of names in the title should be reversed. Also, there’s a giant Hello Kitty Pez dispenser.

SUMMARY: In the style of a commercial so American you half expect the Statue of Liberty to drive by in a pickup truck blaring Toby Keith, eating a slice of apple pie and firing a semiautomatic pistol in the air, this teaser for the “Purge” series prequel implies that you can get people to do anything if you just scare them enough and make that fear feel patriotic. She called his rebuttal “pathetic and embarrassing” and encouraged her followers to take Pepto-Bismol before they watched it. Lahren apologized on Twitter, saying her response was “inappropriate.”

DIFFICULT

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You can turn a job into a pleasure today — and it will be even easier to do so if you are accompanied by that special someone. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You are more eager than most to journey down a certain path. It is not clear where it leads, but you have a hunch something good will happen. ARIES (March 21-April 19) Now is no time for secrets; you want everything to be out in the open so that everyone can contribute to the progress being made. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You mustn’t stand in the way of change today, whether large or small. Indeed, what seems minor is likely to have the greatest impact.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You are

eager to be reunited with someone who has inspired you in the past. Set aside any preconceived notions because anything can happen.

DIFFICULT

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Kathy Griffin described how the Secret Service investigated her following the May publication of a photo of her holding a replica of President Trump’s decapitated head. She told the publication that investigators asked if she had weapons in her home. “I said, ‘No. Oh, well, I have a sword. It’s huge,’ ” she recalls. “And I was like, ‘It’s not for anything.
