Cancer Charity Battles Backlash Komen blasted after funding dropped for Planned Parenthood D[m Oeha Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the renowned breast-cancer charity, faced an escalating backlash Thursday over its decision, announced Tuesday, to cut breast-screening grants to Planned Parenthood. Meanwhile, Komen has been deluged with negative emails and Facebook postings, accusing it of knuckling under to pressure from anti-abortion groups Planned Parenthood has been heartened by an outpouring of support in response to the cutoff. $250,000 pledge announced Thursday by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to match future donations. In Washington, 26 U.S. senators signed a letter calling on Komen to reconsider its decision: “It would be tragic if any woman — let alone thousands of women — lost access to these potentially lifesaving screenings because of a politically motivated attack.” Komen’s founder and CEO, Nancy Brinker, said the decision stemmed from newly adopted criteria barring grants to organizations under investigation — affecting Planned Parenthood because of an inquiry by a Republican congressman acting with encouragement from anti-abortion activists. An anonymous source with direct knowledge of decision-mak-

ing at Komen’s headquarters in Dallas said a driving force behind the decision was Karen Handel, who frequently denounced Planned Parenthood. Brinker said Handel didn’t have a significant role in the policy change. The source also said that Mollie Williams, who had been Komen’s director of community health programs, had resigned in protest. Williams said she could not comment on her departure but said, “It would be a mistake for any organization to bow to political pressure and compromise its mission.” Though comments posted on Komen’s Facebook page seemed to be mostly critical, Brinker said donations had increased since Tuesday. Trump Endorses Romney in Nev. Real estate mogul snubs Gingrich and touts front-runner BWi L[]Wi Hotel magnate Donald Trump endorsed Mitt Romney here on Thursday, a theatrical announcement that matched the setting two days before the Nevada caucuses. Trump, a onetime possible contender for the presidency, said it was an “honor” to endorse Romney. Taking the stage at his luxury hotel on the Vegas Strip, Trump lavished praise on Romney in trademark colorful terms, much as he does on his television show “Celebrity Apprentice.” “Mitt is tough, he’s smart, he’s sharp, he’s not going to allow bad things to continue to happen to this country that we all love, so Governor Romney, go out and get ‘em. You can do it,” declared Trump,

I^kd" J^[d Fbk] Last April, Donald Trump dismissed Mitt Romney as a “small business guy” and suggested Bain Capital, where Romney made his millions, had bankrupted companies and destroyed jobs. “He’d buy companies, he’d close companies, he’d get rid of jobs,” Trump said. Romney also turned down an invitation to participate in a presidential debate that Trump planned to moderate in Iowa in December. The debate was canceled when just Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum said they’d participate. (AP)

who briefly flirted with running for president himself, declared. “There are some things that you just can’t imagine happening in your life,” Romney countered as he took the podium. “This is one of them.” Trump’s endorsement came after a topsy-turvy set of events that suggested he might endorse Newt Gingrich. Gingrich’s camp had been so confident of winning the real estate mogul’s backing that it had leaked

word Trump would support the former House speaker. One of those officials said Trump had “sent signals” to Gingrich that he would support him. On a tour of a Las Vegas manufacturing facility Thursday, Gingrich made clear he wasn’t getting Trump’s backing. “No,” Gingrich said when asked if he was expecting Trump’s endorsement. He added he was amazed at the attention Trump was getting. ( WASHINGTON POST/AP)

Deadly Riot Ignites Fury at Egypt’s Police 9W_he Security forces clashed Thursday with stone-throwing protesters enraged by the failure of police to prevent a soccer riot that killed 74 people, as sports violence spiraled into a new political crisis for Egypt. The deaths Wednesday night in a post-match stadium riot in the Mediterranean city of Port Said fueled anger at Egypt’s ruling military and the already widely distrusted police forces. Many in the public and in the newly elected parliament blamed the leader-

ship for letting it happen — whether from a lack of control or, as some alleged, on purpose. A network of soccer fans known as Ultras vowed vengeance, accusing the police of letting rivals attack them because they have been among the most aggressive of Egypt’s revolutionaries. Prime Minister Kamal el-Ganzouri announced Thursday he had dissolved the Egyptian Soccer Federation’s board. He also said the governor of Port Said province and the area’s police chief resigned. What began Thursday as a peaceful march from the Al-Ahly headquarters in Cairo descended into fury as more than 10,000 protesters reached the Interior Ministry. Riot police were separated from the protesters by barricades that

In the chaotic evacuation of the Costa Concordia, passengers and crew abandoned almost everything on board the cruise ship: jewels, cash, champagne, 19th-century crystal glassware and art. Now, a veritable treasure lies beneath the Italian waters where the luxury liner ran aground Jan. 13 off the Tuscan island of Giglio. “It’s now a paradise for divers,” said Hans Reinhardt, a lawyer who represents 19 passengers seeking compensation. He said some clients traveled with diamond-studded jewels and other heirlooms. It may be just a matter of time before treasure hunters set their sights on the sunken spoils of the Costa Concordia, which had more than 4,200 people on board. Seventeen people are confirmed dead, with 15 more still missing.

Divers comb the capsized Costa Concordia last month during recovery efforts, which Italy ended Tuesday due to the hazards.

“It’s considered off base to everybody because it’s a grave,” said Robert Marx, a veteran diver and author. “But when all the bodies are out, there will be a mad dash.” The company still legally owns the ship and passengers own their sunken objects, so looters would be subject to arrest, the Coast Guard

MehbZ U.N. Closes In On Resolution Against Syria Kd_j[Z DWj_edi The U.S. and its allies agreed Thursday to drop a demand to impose U.N. sanctions and a voluntary arms embargo on Damascus, in exchange for a commitment from Russia to allow adoption of a U.N. Security Council resolution that paves the way for Syrian President Bashar Assad’s departure from power. The latest offer — outlined in a new version of a draft resolution under negotiations — represents a retreat by Washington and its allies, stripping away the most painful measures aimed at Syria, and taking off the table the issue of its weapons purchases from Russia, Syria’s closest ally. Advertisers have big incentives to stand out. With more than 111 million viewers expected to tune into the game, the Super Bowl is by far the biggest stage for marketers. It’s also not cheap — NBC is charging an average of $3.5 million for a 30-second spot. And the competition is ďŹ erce: There will be more than 70 TV ads during the Super Bowl battling for attention. It’s no longer enough for marketers to simply get people talking the morning after the game. They also want to engage those who react to big events by posting online or texting friends, said David Berkowitz of digital marketing agency 360i.

:edÊj Ijef Dem When people ask me how long the MARC train ride from Baltimore to Washington takes, I say an hour. But that’s only if I time it right. Let’s say I just miss the 8:10 a.m. train — maybe because my heartless neighbor ignores my request to “Hold the elevator!!” The next one leaves at 9:05 a.m., meaning my trip actually takes closer to two hours. I’ve always just chalked up those extra-long commutes to bad luck, but to Jarrett Walker, a popular blogger who’s been designing public transportation systems around the world for more than 20 years, they’re proof of the significance of frequency. “Frequency is freedom,” says Walker, author of the new book “Human Transit: How Clearer Thinking About Public Transit Can Enrich Our Communities and Our Lives” ($35, Island Press). The more often the train/bus/streetcar arrives, the less you need to be obsessed with timetables. That, in turn, allows you to take trips spontaneously — just like people who rely on cars. So when it comes to thinking about public transit, a lot of what’s

on Walker’s mind relates to frequency and how to improve it. One way to get buses moving faster is to cut down on the number of stops. American transit systems tend to place stops really close together to limit the amount of walking necessary, Walker explains. But that also slows buses down to the speed of molasses. Get rid of some stops, and people will walk more (which they should be doing anyway for their health) and wind up with better, more frequent service. Sounds like a win-win situation, right? Not exactly. “People who like the bus stop in front of their house will scream,” Walker promises. But to make a transit system that works well for everybody requires individual sacrific-

es. This brings us to another one of Walker’s ways to improve frequency: more connections. It’s simply not possible to create routes that will take all of us exactly where we want to go and when we want to go. Much more doable is establishing a grid of reliable t ransit t hat requires a transfer if you decide to deviate from a straight path. If you don’t like transfers, Walker says, that’s just because the ones you’ve experienced have been bad. The way he sees it, all connections should be short, pleasant and — attention, WMATA! — free. “The connection is a necessary inconvenience. It isn’t an added feature,” he says. For transit systems separated from street traffic, such as our Metro, the future of frequency is particularly bright, Walker predicts. A huge hurdle to increasing service is staffing costs. But if we follow in the footsteps of Vancouver, B.C.’s SkyTrain, a fully automated system, we won’t need drivers any more. What we’ll always need, however, is clearer thinking about transit — so I don’t have to wait an hour for the next train to work.

;l[dj >eh_ped

Walker’s Paradise If you want to make a connection with Jarrett Walker, it’ll be easy next week. The author has four stops in the area — all at transitaccessible locations, of course. His local tour starts at noon on Tuesday in Baltimore. He’ll be in Silver Spring that night for a public lecture. On Thursday, he’s speaking at both the National Building Museum and the American Public Transportation Association. For details on how to RSVP for the events (and to learn how to get a $14 discount on the book), visit his blog, Humantransit.org.

Va. Set to Repeal Handgun Limit State Senate is ready to end one-a-month cap on purchases H_Y^cedZ" LW$ Virginia is poised to lift its oneper-month limit on handgun purchases, with the Republican-controlled state Senate expected to do away with the decades-old cap Friday. The Senate passed the measure in a preliminary vote Thursday, one

day after the House passed its own version. Gov. Robert F. McDonnell, a Republican, has indicated he will sign legislation lifting the purchase limit. Pro-gun lawmakers have tried for years to eliminate the one-permonth cap, imposed in the early 1990s under Democratic governor Doug Wilder in an effort to curb gun trafficking. Bills to remove the limit have passed the Republican-dominated House before. But they always died in the Senate at the hands

of the Democrats and moderate Republicans who long controlled the upper chamber. “It’s going pretty well,” said Philip Van Cleave, president of the Virginia Citizens Defense League. “It’s by no means perfect.” Senate Minority Leader Richard L. Saslaw, D-Fairfax, had a less sanguine take. “We’re going to become the gun-distribution center of the East Coast, just like we were before,” Saslaw said. LAURA VOZZELLA

Amy Brown prepares to ride to Adams Morgan from the 14th Street-Rhode Island Avenue Capital Bikeshare station Nov. 24.

Capital Bikeshare Ready to Grow MWi^_d]jed The sturdy red bikes that arrived in the District and Arlington County as a curiosity and now blend into the urban landscape will swarm into suburbia this year. By summertime, the bikes should be rolling through the streets of Rockville and Alexandria as the popular Capital Bikeshare program expands into several outer Washington communities. If grant applications come through,

they might also appear in Bethesda, Silver Spring, Takoma Park, Friendship Heights and Forest Glen. The development of White Flint and Wheaton make those neighborhoods likely candidates, too. College Park, with thousands of students, is also a tempting location. Greenbelt is in the mix, as are Frederick, Howard and Prince George’s counties in Maryland. Rockville is planning to install Bikeshare docking stations at 20 locations, with 200 bikes to follow.

Alexandria plans to deploy 70 bikes at eight locations. As Bikeshare moves to areas outside the cit y, the sensible accommodations are important, said Shane Farthing, director of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association. “I do think that the next places that come along are going to have to step it up a little bit to make sure that ... people are safe, that there’s space for people to bike,” Farthing said. ASHLEY HALSEY III (TWP)

A second man has been arrested in connection with the slaying of Alexandria activist Lenny Harris, who was fatally shot and then dumped in a Prince George’s County well in September, authorities said. Ivan Newman, 20, was arrested Thursday near his home in Waldorf, Prince George’s County police said. Authorities said he Harris will be charged with first-degree murder, robbery and kidnapping. Harris, 53, went missing in September. Last week his remains were found in a well in Fort Washington, Md. Linwood Johnson, 49, also has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with Harris’ death. Police have said they think Harris’ attackers set out to rob him. (T WP)

Fhe <eejXWbb The history of the Super Bowl includes lasting images of Marcus Allen and John Riggins breaking loose for long runs, and Franco Harris, Larry Csonka and Emmitt Smith churning out yards. But as the New York Giants and New England Patriots prepare to play on Sunday, the running backs are an afterthought. The two quarterbacks, the Patriots’ Tom Brady and the Giants’ Eli Manning, have done the heavy lifting on offense for their teams. The prospects for a running back carving a spot in Super Bowl lore this weekend seem slim. “The value of the running back has diminished greatly” said former Tennessee Titans running back Eddie George, who was in Indianapolis for the big week. “Everything is based off of the quarterback.” No player on either Super Bowl team had even 700 rushing yards during the regular season. Neither team had a runner ranked among the league’s top 26 rushers. In the most pass-happy season in NFL history, the Giants and Patriots relied on their quarterbacks as heavily

Ahmad Bradshaw, the Giants’ leading rusher with 659 yards, was 29th. The Patriots, as a team, ranked 20th in the league in rushing, and the Giants were last, quite a departure for a franchise that traditionally has taken pride in a rugged ground game. The Giants did crank up their running game in the first round of the NFC playoffs, amassing 172 rushing yards in their triumph over the Atlanta Falcons. But that has been the exception rather than the rule this season. Meanwhile, Patriots rookie running back Stevan Ridley had 441 rushing yards during the regular season. But he has only four carries during the playoffs. That’s half as many playoff carries as the Patriots have given to tight end Aaron Hernandez, who occasionally lines up in the backfield. “Back when I played, you had to have a franchise back,” said Marshall Faulk, a Hall of Fame running back who won the title with the St. Louis Rams. “But now with everybody throwing the ball like they’re throwing it, you almost grow a little leery of a team like San Francisco that actually runs the ball more than they throw it. Victor Cruz: No one knew who the receiver was a year ago. Now, he’s the Giants’ best weapon, with 82 catches for 1,536 yards and nine TDs. Facing a weak Pats secondary, Cruz probably is all set for one of his famous salsa dances after a score in Indy. Jason Pierre-Paul: Patriots QB Tom Brady must be dreading having to dodge the NFL’s most dominant defensive lineman. With amazing speed and agility, Pierre-Paul, who had 16½ sacks this season, can control a game. If he does so on Sunday, Big Blue is going to be very happy.

J>;

F7JH?EJI

DT Vince Wilfork: Forget the great Giants’ front four — Wilfork, with 2½ sacks this postseason, is as good as any of them. And remember Eli Manning can’t complete another crazy pass, as he did four years ago to David Tyree, if he’s on his back.

J>;

Lawrence Tynes: He’s nailed the winning kick in two NFC title games for the Giants, and given both teams’ history of nail-biting Super Bowls (see page 11), kicking could make the difference.

BenJarvus Green-Ellis: It’s true the Pats need some form of a running game to help Tom Brady. It’s true that Green-Ellis scored 11 TDs this year. And it’s true that he’s never lost a fumble. But here’s the real truth: Green-Ellis’ strong blocking will be huge on Sunday.

Rob Gronkowski: If his high ankle is healed, there may be no stopping the Patriots’ 6-foot-6 tight end. Tom Brady has suitable targets at wide receiver, yet it’s the “Gronk” who has become New England’s most exciting player.

It’s safe to say more people prefer a slice of greasy cheese than prefer a creamy soup full of mollusks and veggies. But you can just sense New York’s jealousy with its Manhattan Clam Chowder, a gross tomatobased product that is a shell of its older brother. You don’t see Boston making up its own bad pizza style. Advantage: Boston.

At first blush, Boston’s most renowned landmark would seem to be lost in the Empire State Building’s shadow. After all, the New York skyscraper is taller and more visited. But being way up in the sky gets old in a hurry, and the $20 cost just to reach the 86th floor is steep. Faneuil Hall has the edge in history (dating back to 1742) and has good food to boot. Advantage: Boston.

Ikf[h 8emb NBL? J>; =?7DJI M?BB M?D ?< $$$ Tom Coughlin is mentioned in the same breath as Bill Parcells. After NBC’s Al Michaels and Chris Collinsworth are done yapping about Peyton Manning’s neck, the announcers have certain story lines to follow. One is the current Giants coach’s place in history; another Super Bowl win ties him with Parcells. While the Big Tuna is more beloved, Coughlin’s legacy would be tough to match at that point.

Ahmad Bradshaw is turned loose. A big difference from the last time these teams met in the Super Bowl is that the Giants are now a passfirst team. While Eli Manning has proved he’s up to the challenge, New York may want to stick with Bradshaw and the ground game to keep Tom Brady and the Pats’ potent offense off the field.

Mathias Kiwanuka has a grand homecoming. Before the Giants’ pass-rush specialist was a star at Boston College, he grew up in Indianapolis. Can you imagine a better story than the hometown kid forcing a Tom Brady fumble that is returned for the winning score? Pats fans can, but this is a dream for the Giants’ faithful.

Rob Gronkowski and Wes Welker are sure to draw the most attention from the Giants’ secondary. One way to combat this is for Brady to look to the 2005 Super Bowl MVP: Deion Branch, who caught 11 passes in New England’s 24-21 victory over the Eagles. The receiver isn’t what he used to be, but his 700-plus yards and five touchdowns this season prove he’s still a viable threat.

New York has produced four presidents, though only one known simply by his initials. In Boston’s favor, Democrats search for the next John F. Kennedy (who’s technically from Brookline, Mass.) each election cycle. Franklin Delano Roosevelt has his own memorial in D.C., while Kennedy’s name adorns our most famous arts center. Sadly, Kennedy never got to finish his first term. Roosevelt died in office, too, but not until he’d helped defeat the Nazis and the Great Depression. Advantage: New York

Martin Scorsese hitched his wagon to Leonardo DiCaprio with 2002’s “Gangs,” but the pairing didn’t hit its stride until four years later with “The Departed.” Daniel Day-Lewis overshadowed DiCaprio in “Gangs,” but Scorsese’s go-to star held his own opposite Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg in “The Departed.” The later film worked so well that Scorsese — the most iconic of New York directors — won his only Oscar for a mob movie set in Boston. Advantage: Boston.

Now it gets serious. Boston has Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski and Jim Rice going for it. That’s nice, except when compared with Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio and Lou Gehrig. Need further evidence of the Yanks’ superiority? Roger Clemens and Wage Boggs, two Boston legends, won their only titles in the Bronx. A solemn Boggs, right, seems natural, until you see a wild and crazy Boggs, above, opening up some bubbly. Advantage: New York

His lower-priced collection, in stores and at Target.com Sunday, boasts frocks, sweaters and bags that maintain his signature simplicity (sweet stripes, striking colors, ladylike shapes) at seriously affordable prices (less than $60 a pop). We caught up with Wu about the gamine chic-meets-American street style line.

Why’d you decide to work with Target? For years, I avoided doing a more popularly priced collection. But after meeting the Target team, I felt really inspired to do it. I’m a fan of what they’ve done, so why not? You’re used to designing high-end clothes. Was doing a different price point tough? You know, it comes with its challenges. It was a moment! Can you give me one style tip for the D.C. woman? Don’t be afraid to wear something feminine and still be taken seriously. Embrace your femininity. I’m a teacher at an all-girls high school. I need a pair of low-key heels to wear to prom, graduation and a family wedding this spring. It’d be good if the shoes did not break the bank. — KRISTEN Manolo says, oh, how the Manolo well remembers the night of the grand prom at his alma mater, Our Lady of the Flaming Spleen Country Day School (whose motto is still “The Wrathful Word Turneth Away Evil”).

How could anyone forget Sister Assumpta, looking like Ernest Borgnine in the wimple, standing at one side of the gymnasium dance floor, armed with something like the lifeguard’s hook, the long pole with the crook on the end. If, during the slow jam, the bodies of the couples drifted too closely together, or the hand of the boy slipped too far down the back of the girl, Sister Assumpta would make her presence known, using her shepherd’s crook to forcefully yank the pair of would-be lovers back to propriety. Of the course, the Manolo never had any problems on that score, indeed; for the young Manolo, the prom was less about the slow-dancing with the girls and more about the sartorial splendor. Finally, the Manolo’s customary Neo-Edwardian morning coat, embroidered waistcoat and spats had found the appreciative audience! Look, here is the Wystere from AK Anne Klein ($79, Zappos.com), the nude patent pump that will work well for the graduation and the wedding, and will not the bank break. It also comes in several other colors. Ask the Manolo a question at manolo@shoeblogs.com. Visit the Manolo at shoeblogs.com.

On the other hand, the rows of critics kept erupting in guffaws and the kind of smart-alecky back talk you’d expect at a screening of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” “The Woman in Black,” based on Susan Hill’s 1983 novel, delivers a better-than-serviceable — if less than “Sixth Sense”-worthy — scare. Director James Watkins knows how to make a body jump out of its skin, even if he uses the face-reflected-inthe-mirror trick once too often.

<kddo eh :_[ Daniel Radcliffe’s first post-‘Potter’ movie tows the line between horror and humor <_bc H[l_[m According to spiritualists, the veil separating the world of the living from the world of the dead is tissue-thin at times. When it comes to cinematic ghost stories, however, there’s a wide gulf between those who love the genre and those who just like to laugh at it. That divide was in stark evidence at a recent screening of “The Woman

JONATHAN SHORT/AP

I did not walk out of the press screening of “The Woman in Black,” opening Friday, because it was too scary (even though I don’t like scary movies). I left because its subject matter — which involves a lot of children dying — was about to send me, if not into a full-fledged panic attack, at least into the state where I wake up every hour to make sure my son is still breathing. I have one child, and that one was 8o Ah_ij[d expensive and difficult FW][#A_hXo to come by. Because of that, I won’t have any more. And I experience movies on a very visceral level — there is a part of me that absolutely believes what is happening on the screen. So watching child after child die and hearing the screams of parents (and, since I had seen the play on which the movie is based, knowing what was coming), I couldn’t take it. I know people who have lost children. I often wonder whether my father’s death at age 60 was just as devastating to his mother as it would have been at 6. People recover as best they can, I guess. But the worst part of parenthood is the voice that sneaks in at 3 in the morning and whispers to the most sensitive part of your brain that it could happen to you, too. I can’t think about it for long. I won’t. So I left and wandered around the mall and bought some clothes for a niece due in March, trying to beat back fear with a polka-dotted onesie.

Director: James Watkins Stars: Daniel Radcliffe, Janet McTeer and Ciaran Hinds In a Nutshell: A lawyer travels to a remote village, where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals.

At the same time, the film is kind of, well, silly. Set a hundred years or so ago in the sort of small, remote and bleakly picturesque English village where folks don’t take kindly to strangers, “The Woman in Black” features a supporting cast of mostly unknown actors (with the exception of Janet McTeer and Ciaran Hinds) tasked mainly with glaring at Radcliffe’s Arthur Kipps and urging him to take the next train back to London. He doesn’t, of course. Meanwhile, he finds himself drawn deeper and deeper into a mystery involving madness and the ghosts of dead children. That’s a winning (if less than original) formula, as any fan of Japanese horror can tell you. It also helps that Arthur is a widower himself. He already imagines that he can see his late wife. What’s a few more apparitions here and there? MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST )

7 :WdY[ <_bc B_a[ De Ej^[h :eYkc[djWho It’s not every day that a director comes along and sweeps away a genre’s pesky cobwebs, but Wim Wenders does just that with his documentary (and Oscar contender) “Pina.” The director behind “Buena Vista Social Club” and “Wings of Desire” doesn’t reveal any basic facts about his subject, the late German dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch. Instead, he has crafted a 3-D collage of dance, unconventional interviews, archival footage and words that manages to describe her very essence. Bausch, who died unexpectedly at the age of 68 two days before filming was to begin, was a master of the unorthodox. Those unfamiliar with her work get a crash course during “Pina,” which features snippets of her choreography, including “Cafe Mueller,” a moving spectacle of dancers struggling across a set littered with tables and chairs. Much of the film, though, consists of tributes to Bausch, courtesy of her talented dancers. Each company member gets the opportunity to explain, in words and movement, her significance. You might call it arresting or spectacular, heart-rending or thrilling. But, as Bausch knew, none of the usual descriptors can do justice to the object. This is one film that just needs to be experienced. STEPHANIE MERRY (T WP)

<_bc H[l_[m Movies that purport to be constructed from found footage, in the manner of “The Blair Witch Project” and “The Devil Inside,” usually do so to cloak a flimsy premise. That’s not the issue with “Chronicle,” in which a pretty good idea for a sci-fi thriller is undermined by hastiness — and by the pretense that it was mostly shot by one of its protagonists. That amateur cameraman is Andrew (Dane DeHaan), a Seattle-area high-schooler who’s bullied at school and at home. At the beginning, Andrew announces that he’s going to videotape his life, and “Chronicle” pretends to be mostly his footage. One night, Andrew and his cousin Matt (Alex Russell) attend a rave, where they wander off with Matt’s pal Steve (Michael B. Jordan), a senior-class superstar. In a development any super-

FbWo_d] ALBERT NOBBS (R, 113 minutes) A delicate, closely observed chamber piece, this affecting portrait of longing, lying and leading double lives in 19th-century Ireland sneaks up on the audience with the quiet discretion of the enigmatic protagonist at its center. And, like him, it contains multitudes beneath its prim surface. Did I say “him”? Albert Nobbs is, after all, played by Glenn Close, who we first meet as a meek, impeccably groomed butler at a modest but respectable hotel in Dublin. Nobbs has worked there for nearly 20 years, during which time the staff and guests have come to think they know him simply as a reserved keeper of secrets. But two people Nobbs encounter confront him with the secret he has held closest of all: that he’s really a woman who long ago assumed a man’s identity to survive and to this day doesn’t know exactly who he/she is. That filmgoers can so easily slip into Nobbs’ attenuated reality at all is due to Close’s uncanny performance. She possesses the kind of transparent clarity and stillness that makes screen acting look easy. A.H.

THE ARTIST (PG-13, 100 minutes) Capping off a year of movies dedicated to high-style nostalgia, “The Artist” arrives like the last, lightest profiterole on the croquembouche. “The Artist” opens in 1927, when dapper Errol Flynn-esque film star George Valentin (Jean Dujardin) rules Hollywoodland as its reigning star, his million-dollar grin coming as easily as the waves of applause that predictably greet every one of his new pictures. When George crosses paths with an eager newcomer named Peppy Miller (Berenice Bejo), he’s cast in the role of mentor (and maybe more); but when talking pictures become the order of the day, she quickly begins an ascent up stardom’s ladder, while George’s fortunes begin their inevitable slide. A.H. CONTRABAND (R, 109 minutes) Directed by actor-director Baltasar Kormakur, the film has a gloomy, propulsive, workingclass energy that feels slightly more European than Hollywood-y. When we first meet Chris Farraday (Mark Wahlberg), he has left the smuggling game to raise a family and build a legitimate business in suburban New Orleans. But when his wife’s younger brother, Andy, winds up in hock to a volatile drug dealer (Giovanni Ribisi), Chris is forced to take up his old ways to pay off the debt and to keep Andy Continued on page 24

from being shot in the head. Playing against type, Ribisi makes for a compelling, and frighteningly unhinged, villain. Briggs also threatens Chris’ wife and his two young sons, unless Chris comes up with the money. A quick plan is thrown together to hop down to Panama on the next freighter and come back with a pile of counterfeit currency. But the plan spins rapidly, and bloodily, out of control. That said, “Contraband” delivers certain rewards, both expected and unexpected. M.O THE DESCENDANTS (R, 115 minutes) George Clooney doesn’t put a foot wrong except on purpose in “The Descendants,” a pitch-perfect movie that threads a tiny needle between comedy and devastating drama. Clooney’s Matt King is the wealthy descendant of Hawaiian royalty, who, as the movie opens, is watching his wife, Elizabeth, lie comatose in a hospital bed after suffering a near-fatal boating accident. A distant husband and father, Matt must find a way to bond with his

to love?

daughters, 10-year-old Scottie (Amara Miller) and 17-year-old Alex (Shailene Woodley). “The Descendants” is an ode to emotional dissonance, wherein regret and antic humor can coexist and even share a drink; it’s a tricky tonal high-wire act that writer-director Alexander Payne pulls off with uncommon skill and aplomb. A.H. EXTREMELY LOUD AND INCREDIBLY CLOSE (PG-13, 129 minutes) There’s a fine line between precocious and insufferable, and it’s a line continually crossed by Stephen Daldry’s extremely labored and incredibly crass adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel. The story of how a young boy processes the trauma of his father’s death on Sept. 11, 2001, the film brazenly mines the imagery of that day to create a morbid pastiche of iconographic symbols. Oskar Schell narrates the story of how he lost his father on what he calls the Worst Day and how a key he left behind somehow figures into an imaginary game they used to play. Rather than the rigor and restraint that’s called for here, Daldry lays the sentiment and studied idiosyncrasies on with a trowel like a pastry-maker who can’t stop piling on the whipped cream. A.H.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (R, 158 minutes) Rooney Mara’s portrayal of punked-out cyber-genius Lisbeth Salander does much to advance the appeal of this spiky heroine, whose victimization at the hands of piggish men and her subsequent avenging fury have made her a feminist avatar for the WikiLeaks era. Handsomely filmed and impeccably acted, “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” is at once satisfying and underwhelming, a pristine, coolly atmospheric procedural thriller that comes to the party a tad overdressed in hype. The movie’s most unsettling scenes, a brutal rape and an equally torturous act of revenge, are staged by Fincher for maximum shock value. But for the most part, he plays down his stylistic signatures, allowing the performances to project the story’s most subtle meanings. A.H. THE GREY (R, 117 MINUTES) Within its first several minutes, Joe Carnahan’s man-against-nature thriller takes on contours and shadings far more sophisticated than the usual pulp programmer. Soon Ottway and his fellow he-men are on a plane bound for civilization. The plane won’t make it, leaving Ottway and six others marooned in the middle of a blank, icy wasteland with subzero winds, punishing snowstorms and packs of hungry wolves. Such pure, elemental motivations and obstacles could easily provide the makings of a

brutish but viscerally effective B-movie, but Carnahan aspires to something more and he largely achieves it. Even with its requisite amount of hokum, though, “The Grey” executes its battle of the alpha-males with toughness, efficiency and even artistry, as Ottway’s long, unspeakably difficult slog reaches a conclusion that is anything but foregone. H AY W I R E ( R , 10 5 m i n u t e s ) Mallory Kane joins Lisbeth Salander and Margaret Thatcher as the latest tough-girl movie heroine by leaving a trail of carnage, sulphur and various male body parts in her wake. Played by real-life mixed martial arts champion Gina Carano, Mallory is a steely, smokyvoiced creation. It emerges that Mallory, a former Marine, has something to do with a Blackwater-esque private contractor and a black ops mission gone wonky. Carano’s not a great actress, but she doesn’t need to be in a movie that, as conceived by screenwriter Lem Dobbs, doesn’t get bogged down in psychology or humanizing back stories. Instead, “Haywire” simply gives audiences what they came to see: bruising fight sequences set up and executed with economy, skill and one or two genuine jaw-dropping jolts. A.H. THE IRON LADY (PG-13, 105 minutes) Meryl Streep disappears so uncannily into former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher that her performance overpowers the movie. delivering a bravura performance — not a thoughtful, provocative portrait of one of the most consequential figures of the 20th century. “The Iron Lady” is a curious piece of work, leaving viewers with

the sense that its subject has been both lionized and punished, but in neither case fully or fairly understood. A.H. JOYFUL NOISE (PG-13, 118 minutes) Times are tough for the citizens of Pacashau, Ga., and not just because the recession has shuttered most of the town’s businesses. The director of the Divinity Church Choir has died, making the group’s chances for top prize at

with Cassidy initially an object of prurient interest then becoming a blue-collar folk hero. That gives the movie at least a frisson of contemporary relevance, but the filmmakers blow that advantage with plot and characterization that require, not just a suspension of disbelief but a suspension of eye-rolling reflexes and the nagging impulse to burst into derisive laughter. A.H. ONE FOR THE MONEY (PG-13, 106 minutes) Stephanie Plum (Katherine Heigl) has lost her job selling lingerie at the Newark Macy’s and just lost her car to the repo guys. She needs cash, or something, at least, to share with her dull, stereotypical blue-collar family. So the hot lingerie saleswoman hits up a relative for a piece of his bail bond business. She needs a big score, so she tackles killer cop Joe Morelli, a guy she has a history with. Stephanie learns on the job, chasing Joe. Sometimes he schools her. More often, she’s taught by a commando-like bounty hunter who likes to be called “Ranger,” a potentially fun character who sets off no sparks in the story or with Stephanie. Bad screenplay structure, unsnappy “snappy” dialogue, bland characters blandly played, flat, tedious direction. (AP) RED TAILS (PG-13, 125 minutes) The complexions of its heroes aside, this George Lucas-produced dogfight epic could have been made during the same decade the Tuskegee Airmen helped beat Hitler. The war-movie cliches are as abundant as the antiaircraft fire, and the dialogue is as wooden as a balsa glider. The leading

It would appear here that George Clooney doesn’t really want very much attention for “The Descendants.” characters are issued one personality trait each, and some don’t even get that. Cuba Gooding Jr., for example, plays Maj. Emanuelle Stance as a man who smokes a pipe. The African-American fliers’ great achievement merits a great movie. “Red Tails” isn’t it. MARK JENKINS WAR HORSE (PG-13, 146 minutes) Man’s inhumanity to man is examined through a boy’s mystical connection to a horse in “War Horse,” Steven Spielberg’s stirring, expertly manipulative adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s 1982 novel (which has already been adapted for a hit Broadway play). The plucky steed is named Joey, a playful thoroughbred colt admired from

a distance by an English farm boy named Albert (Jeremy Irvine). When Albert’s father, Ted (Peter Mullan), unexpectedly buys Joey in a drunken impulse, the boy is overjoyed, training the horse to respond to his slightest whistle. When Ted’s landlord, Lyons (David Thewlis), demands funds he’s due, it looks as if the family will have to sell Joey — until Albert persuades him to plow an entire rocky field. But Joey’s fate is far from secure: When World War I dawns, Ted does sell the horse, this time to the British forces. A.H. YOUNG GOETHE IN LOVE (Not rated, 102 minutes) After flunking out of school and failing as a writer, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (Alexander Fehling) is sent away by his father to apprentice at a rural court, where instructors have been told to cure him of poetry. While he excels at law, he also gets sidetracked by Lotte Buff (Miriam Stein), daughter of a financially strained widower, who has found herself in the position of unofficial matriarch to a bevy of siblings. With wild red hair and an equally unruly personality, not to mention a love for the arts, she is Johann’s perfectly quirky match. If only her father hadn’t promised her hand to another, someone rich enough to take care of the whole massive brood. Oh, the agony. It would all be too trite to bear if the story weren’t so well paced and the two leads so darn adorable. S.M.

We’d like to declare the weekend before the Valentine’s Day weekend “Bittermas.” After all, the self-pitying should get to celebrate themselves. The Black Cat is clearly on board with this plan, since it’s holding Cryfest, a Cure-versus-Smiths dance party that provides tuneful encouragement for us all to contemplate just how empty and unbearable our lives are. Sigh. For hair inspiration, see the Cure, left. Black Cat, 1811 14th St. NW; Fri., 9 p.m., $10; 202-667-7960, Blackcatdc.com. (U Street)

Though we’re pretty sure “The Wings of Ikarus Jackson” is an inspiring story about valuing others because of their differences, the title seems ominous. The Kennedy Center’s children’s theater production is about a boy who is taunted for his beautiful wings. But they know that in Greek mythology, Icarus’ wings were melted, and he went plummeting into the ocean, right? His father’s brother, an alleged Spanish communist, was given a life sentence under the military dictatorship of Francisco Franco. Sheen is intrigued by this, given that he’s been arrested dozens of times for his own political activism. He admits the futility of his political passions and has no delusions that he is changing the world or even changing minds. He sees activism as something central to his identity. “I cannot not do it,” he asserts. Over the course of the season, the show will feature the backgrounds of Marisa Tomei, Blair Underwood, Reba McEntire, Rob Lowe, Helen Hunt, Rita Wilson, Edie Falco, Rashida Jones, Jerome Bettis, Jason Sudeikis and Paula Deen.

“That was thought to be a demanding diva rider? That’s pretty low-key. And these people always have people dropping by, so you keep extra food around. But I guess she really went bonkers when she requested 3 packs of gum. [Eye roll].” — Commenter Prima at DAILYMAIL.CO.UK/ TVSHOWBIZ didn’t think that the recently discovered demands of Nicki Minaj for her tour appearances weren’t that ridiculous. The rider included requests such as 12 bottles of Martinelli’s apple juice (six room temp, six iced); three 12-piece buckets of spicy fried chicken — no thighs, lots of wings; and a deli tray with turkey breast meat, grilled chicken breast, whole-wheat bread or rolls, yellow mustard and other condiments.

“Against a handsome black pinstripe suit, the mayor’s blue tie and the red D.C. pin complement each other quite nicely. Gray is also lit better, and the photograph takes advantage of his excellent posture and height. In the sitting-at-the-desk picture used previously, he looked neckless and hunched over. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You’re exploring all that a new relationship has to offer, and today you’ll stumble upon the answer to a sensitive question. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You’ll want to approach even the most unusual problem in the most pragmatic manner today. Don’t give anything undue power over you! ARIES (March 21-April 19) Any success you enjoy today will very likely carry over to tomorrow. You’re riding a wave of positive activity that others envy. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) It’s a good day for some creative thinking, especially where otherwise routine endeavors are concerned. Try doing things out of order. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Others are waiting eagerly to hear what you have to say about a certain topic — but you may not feel you’re truly qualified.

Yesterday’s Solution

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Your own expertise may be put to the test as you strive to accomplish something that is not in your sweet spot. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You can be both down-to-earth and quite inspirational at the same time. Indeed, it’s your realistic perspective that really has people talking. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You may have a few things to tell a loved one about his or her recent behavior — but you also recognize that today may not be the right time.
