Adroit, ambitious teen has bright future when she’s done with jail

Police are looking for a woman they say intended to rob a bank but got cold feet. Fall River, Mass., police told the Herald News the woman walked into the Fall River Municipal Credit Union last week and approached a teller. The woman said, “Give me a minute,” then went to a counter and wrote on a piece of paper. But she ripped up the note, dropped the pieces in the trash and left. Employees pieced it together; it said: “Give me the money.” (AP)

St. Louis police are searching for a would-be robber who was thwarted when his gun got stuck in his pants. Police told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch a gunman walked into a Family Dollar store Thursday and ordered an employee to give him the cash register. The worker said he couldn’t, so the suspect reached for a firearm from the waistband of his jeans — but the gun was stuck. Unable to get it out, the man ran off without any money. (AP)

A teen girl in Florida is facing charges after allegedly stealing a car from a Papa John’s delivery driver, HuffPost reported Friday. Josie Bigelow, 14, allegedly ordered pizzas to a neighbor’s house in Lehigh Acres, then hid in the bushes to steal the driver’s car when he arrived. She made it about 6 miles before police were able to catch her. Her father, Joseph Bigelow, told WBBH-TV that she was trying to meet up with her boyfriend. (EXPRESS)

An American classic

Vernon Davis’ ‘biggest role’

DINING Like many restaurants that specialize in grilled meats, Annie’s Paramount Steakhouse has attracted its share of male diners over the decades, but with one important distinction: These men often hold hands. Same with the women who enter into this Dupont Circle institution. Celebrated for its generous portions and gracious service, Annie’s is equally famous for its embrace of the LGBTQ community beginning in the 1950s — years before the Stonewall riots in Greenwich Village launched the modern gay rights movement in America. The restaurant, familyowned since its founding in 1948, was a safe haven for Washington’s gay community back when there were few such places. On Thursday, Annie’s Paramount Steak House officially became an American classic. The James Beard Foundation announced on social media that Annie’s was one of the five winners of this year’s America’s Classics award, handed out annually to “beloved regional restaurants” that are, according to the foundation, “distinguished by

their timeless appeal” and their “quality food that reflects the character of their communities.” “It’s beautiful,” said Paul Katinas, the second-generation owner of Annie’s. “It’s great for the gay community for all the years that they supported the restaurant.” Washington food writer and cookbook author David Hagedorn nominated Annie’s for the Classics award. He even wrote an essay for the foundation on why Annie’s has a place in his heart. “In a time where queer spaces are disappearing from American

cities and the political climate is once again hostile to LBGTQ people, it is imperative that we recognize, support, and celebrate community anchors like Annie’s Paramount Steakhouse,” Hagedorn wrote. Annie’s is the third restaurant in Washington to win an America’s Classics award. The previous winners were Ben’s Chili Bowl and C.F. Gov. Northam digs in VIRGINIA Gov. Ralph Northam clung to office Sunday amid nearly unanimous calls from his own party to resign over a racist photo in his 1984 medical school yearbook, going silent after a bizarre 24 hours in which he first admitted he was in the picture, then denied it. The Democrat’s stunning aboutface — at a weekend news conference where he also acknowledged putting on blackface for a dance contest decades ago and appeared to briefly entertain the notion of doing the Michael Jackson moonwalk for reporters — only seemed to make things worse. The chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus declared that Northam “still does not understand the seriousness of his actions.” The photo shows someone in blackface and another person in a Ku Klux Klan hood and robe. “I think he’s been completely dishonest and disingenuous,” Rep. Karen Bass, D-Calif., said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” “He knew this picture was there, and he could’ve come clean and talked to African-Americans that he’s close to decades ago.” Northam worshipped at his home church Sunday, the predominantly black First Baptist in Capeville, but otherwise kept out of sight as calls intensified for him to step down. Even if Northam doesn’t resign, the scandal threatens to cripple his ability to govern. He has lost the support of virtually all of the state’s Democratic establishment. Top Republicans in the Virginia General Assembly also urged Northam to step down. Virginia governors can be removed for “malfeasance in office, corruption, neglect of duty, or other high crime or misdemeanor” under the state constitution, but top Democrats said they

Bizarre news conference doesn’t quell calls to resign after racist photo comes to light

don’t believe it will come to that. Northam apologized on Friday for appearing in the photograph on his yearbook page. He did not say which costume he was wearing, but said he was “deeply sorry for the decision I made to appear as I did in this photo.” On Saturday, though, the governor reversed course and said the picture “is definitely not me.” While talking with reporters, Northam admitted he once used shoe polish to put on blackface as part of a Michael Jackson costume for a 1984 dance contest in Texas, when he was in the

Army. Northam said he regrets he didn’t understand “the harmful legacy of an action like that.” Asked by a reporter if he could still do Jackson’s famous moonwalk, Northam looked at the floor as if thinking about demonstrating it. His wife put a stop to it. His shifting explanations did little or nothing to sway prominent Democrats who had swiftly disowned him. Both of Virginia’s U.S. senators, Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, joined the dean of Virginia’s congressional delegation, Rep. Bobby Scott, in saying they no longer believe Northam can serve effectively. James Ryan, president of the University of Virginia, said it would be “exceedingly difficult” for Northam to continue serving. If Northam does resign, Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax would become the second African-American governor in the state’s history. He stopped short of calling for Northam’s departure but said he “cannot condone actions” from Northam’s past that “suggest a comfort with Virginia’s darker history of white supremacy, racial stereotyping and intimidation.” One of the few voices backing Northam on Sunday was former Virginia Rep. Jim Moran, a Democrat who served in Congress from 1991 to 2015. Moran told ABC’s “This Week” that Northam’s record — including his support of Medicaid expansion and of public schools in minority neighborhoods — shows that the embattled governor is a friend of African-Americans and that he should ride out the storm. “I think it is a rush to judgment before we know all of the facts and before we’ve considered all of the consequences,” said Moran, who is white. “I don’t think these public shamings really get us all that much.” ALAN SUDERMAN (AP)

Could Fairfax be Va.’s second black leader? VIRGINIA Justin Fairfax is an Ivy Leagueeducated lawyer descended from slaves, who as lieutenant governor of Virginia has been best known for sitting out tributes to Confederate leaders in the historic Capitol in Richmond. He could now become the commonwealth’s 74th governor, if fellow Democrat Ralph Northam resigns over a racist photo included in his medical school yearbook in 1984. As virtually the entire Democratic establishment called for the governor’s resignation, Fairfax, 39, called the photo “a searing reminder of the modern legacy of our nation’s original sin,” but stopped short of saying Northam should step down. Fairfax is serving his first term in public office. He was elected as Northam’s deputy in the 2017 blue wave. He would be the second African-American governor of Virginia, following L. Douglas Wilder, who held office from 1990 to 1994. Fairfax had been expected to run for governor in 2021 to replace Northam, who would have been barred from seeking re-election because of term limits. Dick Howard, a law professor at the University of Virginia and expert on the state constitution, said Fairfax would still be able to run for a full four-year term as governor in 2021 because he would have been appointed — not elected — to the office if Northam resigned. The conduct is incomprehensible.” During a six-week trial, prosecutors said Wint, 37, held the Savopoulos family and Figueroa hostage for a $40,000 cash ransom as part of a desperate attempt to secure money. Several of Wint’s friends and family members testified that they saw Wint with large sums of money, all $100 bills, in the days after the killings. They testified Wint told them he obtained the money from winning the lottery and selling his minivan. The jury of six men and six women found Wint guilty of 20 charges including counts of first-degree murder, kidnapping and arson. KEITH L. ALEXANDER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

U.S.: Reuniting migrants carries risks for children

weekendd re win COURTS

Judge tells Stone: Don’t treat case like a PR effort

PERFECT ATTENDANCE

Super fans never miss a Super Bowl

DAVID J. PHILLIP (AP)

IMMIGRATION The Trump administration says it would require extraordinary effort to reunite what may be thousands of migrant children who have been separated from their parents and, even if it could, the children would likely be emotionally harmed. Jonathan White, who leads the Health and Human Services Department’s efforts to reunite migrant children with their parents, said removing children from “sponsor” homes to rejoin their parents “would present grave child welfare concerns.” White said the government should focus on reuniting children currently in its custody, not those who have already been released to sponsors. “It would destabilize the permanency of their existing home environment, and could be traumatic to the children,” White said in a court filing late Friday, citing his background working with unaccompanied migrant children and as a social worker. The administration outlined its position in a court-ordered response to a government watchdog report last month that found many more migrant children may have been split from their families than the 2,737 previously reported. The government

In a court filing Friday, the Department of Health and Human Services said an effort to reunite all migrant families would imperil its operations.

didn’t adequately track separated children before a federal judge in San Diego ruled June 26 that children in its custody be reunited with their parents. The American Civil Liberties Union, which wants U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw’s order to apply to children who were released to sponsors before his ruling, criticized the government’s position. A hearing is set for Feb. 21. “The Trump administration’s response is a shocking concession that it can’t easily find thousands of children it ripped from parents, and doesn’t even think it’s worth the time to locate each of them,” ACLU attorney Lee Gelernt said.

Jallyn Sualog, deputy director of HHS’ Office of Refugee Resettlement, said in Friday’s filing that it would take up to eight hours to review each of its 47,083 cases between July 1, 2017, and Sabraw’s June order, which translates to 100 employees working up to 471 days. Such an assignment would “substantially imperil” operations without a “dramatic expansion” in staffing. Most children are released to relatives, but many are not parents. Of children released to sponsors in the 2017 fiscal year, 49 percent went to parents, 41 percent to close relatives and 10 percent to distant relatives or others. ELLIOT SPAGAT (AP)

The streak began Jan. 15, 1967, when Don Crisman paid $12 for a ticket to the first Super Bowl at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Crisman, 82, along with Gregory Eaton, 79, and Tom Henschel, 78, attended Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta on Sunday as the last surviving members of the Never Miss a Super Bowl Club. They are the only known fans with a perfect attendance record for the NFL’s biggest game. The men have remained dedicated even as prices have soared over the years. Eaton said he paid $2,000 for this year’s ticket. The Michigan native has never seen his team, the Detroit Lions, make it to the Super Bowl, but he keeps up his streak: “I’ve missed weddings, I’ve missed funerals, but I’ve never missed a Super Bowl,” he said. A judge in Washington cautioned longtime Trump confidant Roger Stone not to treat the charges against him like a public relations campaign, and said she may issue a gag order. “It behooves counsel and the parties to do their talking in this courtroom and in their pleadings and not on the courthouse steps or on the talk show circuit,” U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson said Friday. She said his public statements risk tainting the juror pool. Stone has pleaded not guilty to witness tampering and other felony charges in the Mueller probe. (AP) ORLANDO, FLA.

Newly unsealed documents about notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman contain claims that he raped minors he called “vitamins.” The disturbing allegation was made public Friday, just before the jury begins deliberations today in Guzman’s U.S. drug-trafficking case. According to the papers, a key government cooperator told authorities Guzman had him drug girls as young as 13 before Guzman raped them in the late 2000s. Guzman’s attorney denied the allegations, saying they “lack any corroboration and were deemed too prejudicial and unreliable to be admitted at trial.” (AP)

A sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed during a 12-hour standoff at an Ohio apartment complex that left another deputy wounded and a suspect in custody, authorities said Sunday. Officers for the Clermont County Sheriff’s Office in Southwest Ohio responded Saturday evening to a 911 call from a man who said he believed someone was inside his residence. The caller then said that he was armed and suicidal. A standoff ensued. Detective Bill Brewer died from his wounds, and Lt. Nick DeRose was treated for a gunshot wound and released. The suspect, 23-year-old Wade Edward Winn, was taken into custody. (AP)

Authorities in Atlanta said Grammynominated rapper 21 Savage was in federal immigration custody. A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement official said the artist, whose given name is Sha Yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, was arrested in a targeted operation Sunday in the Atlanta area. The official said Abraham-Joseph is a British citizen who entered the U.S. legally in July 2005 but overstayed his visa, which expired in July 2006. AbrahamJoseph was convicted on felony drug charges in Georgia in October 2014. He was placed in deportation proceedings in federal immigration court. (AP)

The Special Rate will be applied to the enrolled savings account for a period of 12 months, starting on the date the account is enrolled in the offer. However, for any day during that 12 month period that the daily account balance is less than the $25,000 minimum, the Special Rate will not apply and the interest rate will revert to the standard interest rate applicable to your Platinum Savings account. As of 12/10/2018, the standard interest rate and APY for a Platinum Savings account in CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, MD, NJ, NY, SC and VA with an account balance of $0.01 to $99,999.99 is 0.03% (0.03% APY) and with an account balance of $100,000 and above is 0.05% (0.05% APY). Each tier shown reflects the current minimum daily collected balance required to obtain the applicable APY. Interest is compounded daily and paid monthly. The amount of interest earned is based on the daily collected balances in the account. Upon the expiration of the 12 month promotional period, standard interest rates apply. Minimum to open a Platinum Savings account is $25. A monthly service fee of $12 applies in any month the account falls below a $3,500 minimum daily balance. Fees may reduce earnings. Interest rates are variable and subject to change without notice. Wells Fargo may limit the amount you deposit to a Platinum Savings account to an aggregate of $1 million. Offer not available to Private Banking, Wealth, Business Banking or Wholesale customers. 2. Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is effective for accounts opened between 01/21/2019 and 03/22/2019. The 11-month New Dollar CD special requires a minimum of $25,000 brought to Wells Fargo from sources outside of Wells Fargo Bank N.A., or its affiliates to earn the advertised APY. Public Funds and Wholesale accounts are not eligible for this offer. APY assumes interest remains on deposit until maturity. Interest is compounded daily. Payment of interest on CDs is based on term: For terms less than 12 months (365 days), interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or at maturity (the end of the term). For terms of 12 months or more, interest may be paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. A fee for early withdrawal will be imposed and could reduce earnings on this account. Special Rates are applicable to the initial term of the CD only. At maturity, the Special Rate CD will automatically renew for a term of 6 months, at the interest rate and APY in effect for CDs on renewal date not subject to a Special Rate, unless the Bank has notified you otherwise. Due to the new money requirement, accounts may only be opened at your local branch. Wells Fargo reserves the right to modify or discontinue the offer at any time without notice. Offer cannot be combined with any other consumer deposit offer. Minimum new money deposit requirement of at least $25,000 is for this offer only and cannot be transferred to another account to qualify for any other consumer deposit offer. If you wish to take advantage of another consumer deposit offer requiring a minimum new money deposit, you will be required to do so with another new money deposit as stated in the offer requirements and qualifications. Offer cannot be reproduced, purchased, sold, transferred, or traded. 3. The Portfolio by Wells Fargo program has a $30 monthly service fee, which can be avoided when you have one of the following qualifying balances: $25,000 or more in qualifying linked bank deposit accounts (checking, savings, CDs, FDIC-insured IRAs) or $50,000 or more in any combination of qualifying linked banking, brokerage (available through Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC) and credit balances (including 10% of mortgage balances, certain mortgages not eligible). If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the bonus interest rate on all eligible savings accounts, and discounts or fee waivers on other products and services, will discontinue and revert to the Bank’s then-current applicable rate or fee. For bonus interest rates on time accounts, this change will occur upon renewal. If the Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship is terminated, the remaining unlinked Wells Fargo Portfolio Checking or Wells Fargo Prime Checking account will be converted to another checking product or closed.

Russia to exit nuclear treaty Moscow follows U.S. in abandoning pact after alleged noncompliance

In historic visit, pope puts focus on Yemen crisis ALEXEI NIKOLSKY (SPUTNIK, KREMLIN POOL VIA AP)

FOREIGN POLICY Following in the footsteps of the U.S., Russia will abandon a centerpiece nuclear arms treaty, but will only deploy intermediate-range nuclear missiles if Washington does so, President Vladimir Putin said Saturday. President Trump accused Moscow on Friday of violating the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces treaty with “impunity” by deploying banned missiles. Trump said in a statement that the U.S. will “move forward” with developing its own military response options to Russia’s new land-based cruise missiles that could target Western Europe. Moscow has strongly denied any breaches and accused Washington of making false accusations to justify its pullout. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, explaining that Washington on Saturday formally suspended its treaty obligations, said in a statement that Russia’s “continued noncompliance has jeopardized the United States’ supreme interests.” He said the treaty will terminate in six months unless Moscow returns to “full and verifiable compliance.” The collapse of the INF Treaty has raised fears of a repeat of a 1980s Cold War showdown in which the U.S. and the Soviet Union both deployed intermediate-range missiles on the

continent. Such weapons were seen as particularly destabilizing as they only take a few minutes to reach their targets, raising the likelihood of a global nuclear conflict over a false launch warning. Putin said Moscow remains open to talks with Washington, but added it would be up to the U.S. to take the first step. “Let’s wait until our partners are mature enough to conduct an equal and substantive dialogue on those issues,” he said. The U.S. has accused Russia of developing and deploying a cruise missile that violates provisions of the pact that ban production, testing and deployment of land-based cruise and ballistic missiles with a range

of 310 to 3,410 miles. Trump’s move also reflected his administration’s view that the pact was an obstacle to efforts needed to counter intermediate-range missiles deployed by China, which isn’t part of the treaty. NATO allies have strongly backed Washington and urged Moscow to save the treaty by returning to compliance. Russia has rejected the U.S. claims of violation, charging that the missile has a maximum range of 298 miles. Russian officials claimed the U.S. assertions about Moscow’s alleged breach were intended to shift the blame for the pact’s demise to Russia. The Russian Defense Ministry on Saturday released a satellite

image of what it called new production facilities at missile maker Raytheon’s plant in Arizona, noting that expansion began in 2017 as Congress authorized spending for the development of intermediate-range missiles. “The character and the timing of the works provide an irrefutable proof that the U.S. administration had decided to pull out of the INF treaty years before making unfounded claims of Russian violations,” it said. Putin argued it makes no sense for Russia to deploy a groundbased cruise missile violating the treaty because it has such weapons on ships and aircraft, which aren’t banned by the pact. UNITED ARAB EMIRATES Pope Francis landed Sunday in Abu Dhabi on the first-ever papal trip to the Arabian Peninsula, where he is seeking to boost Christian-Muslim relations while ministering to a unique, thriving Catholic community. Francis called for the urgent observation of a limited cease-fire in Yemen reached in December and for food and medicine to get to its people. He made the appeal at the Vatican before boarding a plane as a way to avoid embarrassing his hosts with a public call while in the United Arab Emirates, which have been Saudi Arabia’s main ally in its war in Yemen. “The people are exhausted by the long conflict and many children are hungry, but humanitarian aid isn’t accessible,” Francis said in his noontime Sunday blessing. Francis is in Abu Dhabi to participate in a conference on interreligious dialogue sponsored by the Muslim Council of Elders, an initiative that seeks to counter religious fanaticism by promoting a moderate brand of Islam. It’s the brainchild of Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayeb, the grand imam of Egypt’s Al-Azhar, a mosque and university that trains clerics as the revered 1,000-year-old seat of Sunni Islam. Francis paid homage to el-Tayeb and praised his courage in calling the meeting to assert that “God unites and doesn’t divide.” (NICOLE WINFIELD (AP)

Inmates have been in cells without light or heat for over a week NEW YORK Some demonstrators protesting the lack of heat and electricity at a federal detention center in New York City attempted to enter the facility Sunday, and witnesses said guards drove them back with pushes, shoves and pepper spray.

A reporter and photographer for The Associated Press were at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn when a woman whose son is being detained tried to get into the jail. Protesters have gathered outside the facility in recent days following news reports that those housed there have largely been without heat or power for the past week and haven’t been able to communicate with lawyers or loved ones. and media into the lobby. Witnesses said officers used significant force to push the people out, with some being pushed to the ground. The AP photographer felt some type of spray, and began to have trouble breathing. Those affected were seen washing out their eyes. The Bureau of Prisons has said that the jail “experienced a partial power outage due to a fire in the switch gear room.” The bureau had said a new electrical panel is being installed by an outside contractor and work is expected to be completed today. The agency insisted that inmates had hot water for showers and sinks, and were getting medications as needed. JULIE WALKER (AP)

Capitals right wing T.J. Oshie, left, loses his helmet after colliding with Bruins right wing Chris Wagner.

DUBIOUS MISSION

A five-year streak ends Bruins blank Capitals and finally prevail after losing 14 games in a row to Washington BRUINS 1, CAPITALS 0 Capitals forward T.J. Oshie immediately disputed the call, a whistle halting the team’s power play at a most inopportune time. Oshie was sent to the penalty box for hooking Boston Bruins defenseman Zdeno Chara with less than seven minutes left in a one-goal game, and although this was one of Washington’s least-penalized outings, the minor infractions and the consequences for them were ultimately the story. The Capitals’ 1-0 loss Sunday to the Bruins at Capital One Arena snapped Washington’s 14-game winning streak against Boston that dated back to March

2014. With the loss, the Capitals remain tied with the Penguins for second place in the Metropolitan Division with 62 points through 52 games, and this marked just the third time this season Washington has been shut out. The Bruins didn’t give the Capitals much space, disrupting their zone entries and limiting their quality chances in front of the net. “We had to fight to get to that area [Sunday], and I don’t think we did it enough until the third period,” coach Todd Reirden said. When the Capitals were able to get some sustained pressure in the final 10 minutes, drawing a hooking penalty by Boston

defenseman Charlie McAvoy, they negated their power play just 36 seconds into it. Oshie hooked Chara, and though Washington tallied 11 shots in the third period, nearly doubling its total for the first two periods, the team’s comeback fell short. “Having the power play, you can’t take that penalty there,” Oshie said. “I wasn’t happy with it, obviously, but either way, I got to find a way to not get my stick in there and maybe just live to fight another day.” Oshie’s hook was Washington’s third penalty of the game, but the Capitals have led the league in minor infractions this season.

Reirden responded by taking ice time away from players who took bad penalties. “I think as you get past the All-Star break and you start making a push toward the playoffs, that’s an area we have to get better in, as we’ve taken far too many minor penalties with our sticks,” he said. The Bruins had a 16-5 edge in shots through 20 minutes, though neither team had scored. That was mostly a credit to Caps goaltender Braden Holtby. “We started to play our game in the last period, and that’s not enough,” defenseman Michal Kempny said. ISABELLE KHURSHUDYAN

TONI L. SANDYS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

If Wizards won’t tank, then what? Unlike the executives of many mediocre teams, Wizards majority owner Ted Leonsis refuses to tank the season by trading healthy assets such as Bradley Beal, below, and Otto Porter Jr., and then hoping for luck in the lottery. But if the Wizards claw their way from No. 10 in the East to No. 8, their reward in Round 1 of the playoffs might be facing the Bucks, the top seed that rained down 3s in a 131-115 win Saturday at Capital One Arena. “They sent a message for next week,” Beal said gamely, looking to a rematch Wednesday in Milwaukee. But first the Wizards get a chance to atone tonight (7, NBCSWA) when they visit Atlanta to face the 17-win Hawks — a club that dumped its veterans and began to tank in 2017. (TWP)

He played five seasons for the Redskins before contentious contract talks led Washington to trade him to the Broncos in 2004 for running back Clinton Portis in a rare starfor-star deal.

One of the NFL’s top defenders with the Ravens from 2002 to 2012, he holds the career record for interception return yards (1,590). He led the league in picks three times, finishing with 64.

At 6-foot-5, he played 17 seasons for K.C. and Atlanta and became a model of the sport’s elite passcatching tight ends. His 1,325 catches are first among tight ends and second overall to Jerry Rice.

His election addresses what some considered an underrepresentation in the Hall of the Patriots’ dynasty. Bill Belichick lobbied unsuccessfully for defensive lineman Richard Seymour.

He made the Pro Bowl eight times in 16 seasons (1994-2009) with the Seahawks, Jets and Titans. He blocked for 1,000yard rushers in 13 seasons. He also was president of the NFL Players Association.

He was chosen as the nominee of the seniors committee. Now 80, he began his career (1960-71) with the AFL’s Dallas Texans (who became the K.C. Chiefs) and played flanker his first two seasons.

Bowlen, 74, has owned the Broncos since 1984, although he relinquished control of operations in 2014 because of Alzheimer’s disease. Denver has won three Super Bowls during his tenure.

Brandt, 85, was a Dallas Cowboys front office executive from the 1960s to the ‘80s. He was a key roster architect of teams that had 20 consecutive winning seasons and won two Super Bowls.

MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

1 ‘Song of Parkland’

Rene Russo and Jake Gyllenhaal play art-world snobs in the horror thriller “Velvet Buzzsaw.”

A razor-sharp satire Netflix’s ‘Velvet Buzzsaw’ violently cuts down the commodification of high art FILM REVIEW The art installation, so often a playground in the contemporary art museum, is a terror chamber in Dan Gilroy’s gloriously gory satire “Velvet Buzzsaw.” Interactivity is involuntary. The film, which began streaming Friday on Netflix, assembles a glittering gallery of art-world snobs, strivers and divas. It’s the kind of easy-target collection that Christopher Guest might have taken aim at. But Gilroy, who memorably skewered “if it bleeds, it leads” TV news in “Nightcrawler,” has something darker, or at least bloodier, in mind. In “Velvet Buzzsaw,” when a painting fetches a “killing” at auction, the payoff might be literal.

The characters include Morf Vanderwalt (Jake Gyllenhaal), a power-wielding critic; Rhodora Haze (Rene Russo), a big-time dealer whose old nickname is both the film’s title and the tattoo on her shoulder; buyer Gretchen (Toni Collette), who can manipulate private buyers and museums, alike; a pair of painters, one a graffiti artist sensation (Daveed Diggs), the other a sullen has-been (John Malkovich); and Josephina (Zawe Ashton), a struggling protegee to Haze. It’s on Josephina that the plot turns. When an elderly neighbor named Ventril Dease dies, she stumbles upon the paintings that litter his apartment, and quickly realizes it’s a major discovery. When she shows them

to Vanderwalt, with whom she’s sleeping, he immediately pronounces the paintings “visionary.” The whole transactional system then goes into overdrive to posthumously turn Dease into a major artist and, more importantly, into an industry. Only Josephine knows that Dease had wished

his artwork destroyed. At first merely creepy (we learn his reds were painted in blood), figures in the paintings begin to subtly move, snatch and kill. It makes for a clever satire about the commodification of art. Gilroy’s set-piece slaughters are expertly executed camp, some of them laugh-out-loud funny. “Velvet Buzzsaw” doesn’t lead anywhere inward; it becomes just a litany of (exquisite) death scenes for art-world caricatures. Still, what caricatures they are. Especially good is Gyllenhaal’s Vanderwalt, a paragon of pretension. “Listen to my intelligent mind,” he tells Josephina, reaching perhaps the very mountaintop of mansplaining. He’s a masterpiece. Helene Yorke and Drew Tarver play flailing millennials in “The Other Two.”

MARC SILVER | BROADCAST MUSE

The lost generation: Siblings seek purpose in ‘The Other Two’ Cary is a struggling actor auditioning for “man at party who smells fart” in a commercial. His sister, Brooke, danced as a kid but is now jobless and homeless. So life kind of sucks for these millennial siblings. Then something happens that makes it suck even more: Their 13-year-old brother Chase becomes a megastar after posting a song called “I Wanna Marry U at Recess” on YouTube. Show-biz pundits predict he’ll be “the next big white kid.” That’s the premise for “The Other Two” (10:30 p.m. Thursdays on Comedy Central), a dark and existential sitcom

that probes tough questions like, “What if I’m just not good enough?” and yet keeps the laughs coming. The show’s creators, former “Saturday Night Live” writers Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider, have assembled a fabulous cast. Presiding over Chase and “the other two” is mother Pat, played by Molly Shannon with her usual glint of madness. She lies through her teeth when she tells her flailing older children, “I don’t care if any of you is famous. I just want you to be happy.” Helene Yorke brings plucky desperation to Brooke’s efforts to “find her passion.” She tells her mom she’s planning to be a “travel agent … writer … photographer” — and also a

“rapper/rap critic.” As Cary, Drew Tarver wearily takes absurd notes from the commercial people. They know he’s gay but want him to play the role straight because, as Cary’s agent explains, “If you’re gay and you’re at a party and you smell a fart, that’s a lot for the audience to digest in 30 seconds.” Richard Kind, whose face exudes exasperation, is deadpan hilarious as the agent. Sometimes things get a bit too ridiculous. But there are also tender moments that make the siblings seem a little more sympathetic. They all spend the night in a posh New York hotel room paid for by the “Today” show, which flew Chase in from Ohio for an interview. Then comes the big reveal: Their father died just a few months ago. “I miss dad,” says Chase as he snuggles with his older sibs. Brooke responds, “Yeah, me too.” Read Marc’s previous columns at washingtonpost.com/muse

“Aerie only sells up to XXL and that size is only available online. Thin people think this is inclusivity.” @ALAKAZANNAH, criticizing actress

Jameela Jamil for calling her new campaign for lingerie brand Aerie “inclusive of everyone,” despite the lack of plus-sized women in the photos. Jamil insisted that the campaign is diverse because it includes gay black actress Samira Wiley and paralympian Brenna Huckaby.

“Why does Katy Perry constantly throw shade at queen Britney when Brit has been NOTHING but nice?” @AJLIMELIGHT, blasting the singer for a perceived slight of Britney Spears. On Friday, Perry posted a Q&A with producer Greg Wells, who praised Perry by saying she isn’t “handed a script like a Britney Spears and told what to sing.” Perry has a history of insulting Spears and her 2007 breakdown. Fans noted that Spears has written over 70 of her own songs and developed the ideas for most of her videos.

“Why do so many famous people want the rest of us to dress like we’re in ‘The Hunger Games’?”

“Bruce comes away from this experience with ... grief at his parents’ death, anger at crime and rage at the police.”

@ISMASHFIZZLE, joking about Justin Bieber’s new streetwear line, Drew. The minimalist, mostly camel-colored pieces immediately inspired comparisons to clothing from the movies “Holes,” “The Hunger Games” and “Divergent,” as well as UPS drivers’ uniforms. Others took issue with the pricing. For example, a red T-shirt, bottom left, sells for $48.

@JBOUIE, explaining how the history of a black Bruce Wayne/Batman would differ from past iterations, after Twitter user @YrOnlyHope suggested that Daniel Kaluuya play the hero. @jbouie proposed that a black Thomas and Martha Wayne would die at the hands of a cop, turning Batman’s vigilante focus to fighting police brutality.

Later that night, they were spotted at a hotel. “Pete had his arm around Kate and she was leaning into his neck,” an eyewitness told E!
