Around 400 students at a high school and middle school in Brentwood, Mo., were sent home early Friday after a 9-foot, 70-pound boa constrictor escaped from its aquarium, setting off a frantic search. The snake was found wrapped around pipes beneath the ceramic floor, which had to be ripped up to retrieve it. A biology teacher adopted the snake years ago and kept it in the classroom, donating it to the school when she retired. (AP)

A Florida man was accused Friday of breaking into a funeral home and stealing items including a tub of formaldehyde and makeup used for the dead. Deputies went to the Demarco Family Funeral Home in Spring Hill early Friday to check on a man carrying a crowbar. They arrested Aaron Meininger, 29, on burglary and theft charges. He told investigators he was bored and didn’t know he was breaking into a funeral home. (AP)

A 22-year study of the Torah POTOMAC, MD. It took the Israelites 40 years to walk through the desert to the promised land.

It took the Torah study group at Congregation B’nai Tzedek more than half as long just to read about it.

Last week, the members finally finished reading the Torah — a project they started 22 years ago.

From the first words of Genesis to the last words of Deuteronomy, they’ve finally read it all.

“We moved slowly,” Rabbi Stuart Weinblatt admitted.

That’s an understatement.

Jews divide the five books of Moses into weekly portions so that the whole Torah can be read in a year. The group of people who meet every Thursday morning at this Conservative synagogue in Potomac moved more than 20 times slower than that.

They began reading Genesis in 1996. “I wanted to take my time with it, go slowly with it, so we could really … absorb the wisdom of the text,” Weinblatt said.

entire hour-long session discussing just a verse or two.

Along the way, participants said, their appreciation of the sacred book at the center of Jewish tradition changed and deepened. And the people in the class — from those who started back in Genesis to those who joined just a year ago — marked one another’s life cycle events, too, whether it was sitting shiva, mourning relatives or attending children’s and grandchildren’s b’nai mitzvah services.

They’ve taken field trips to the Library of Congress to look at historic documents and to Pennsylvania to see a re-creation of the Ark of the Covenant so they could understand just how long those cubits they read so much about actually were. Weinblatt comes to class with a stack of source materials, which he flips through frenetically during his lessons.

Participant Helane Goldstein said that reading at a word-byword pace helped her notice phrases she otherwise would have skimmed over.

“It’s really one of the great pleasures of my life,” she said.

“Not everybody has a great teacher. Not everybody has the time. Not everybody has the community. So I consider myself a lottery winner here.”

The end of the Torah isn’t the end of the group. Next, the class will read the book of Joshua.

After that, they might move on to books of other prophets.

Or they might take the advice of Rabbi Ben Bag-Bag, who famously said of the Torah: “Turn it and turn it again, for everything is in it.” After 22 years, they might start all over again.

Dead goose knocks hunter unconscious A dead goose fell from the sky and knocked a 51-yearold hunter unconscious on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

Robert Meilhammer, of Crapo, Md., was hunting waterfowl with three others last Thursday in Easton, Md., near the Miles River when someone in the group fired on a flock of Canada geese overhead.

One of the geese fell and hit Meilhammer, knocking him out and causing head and facial injuries, the Maryland Natural Resources Police reported. He was taken to a shock trauma unit.

Officials said he is now in stable condition. (TWP)

Metro parking plans draw ire in suburbs

Two federal agencies join school graduation probe

TRANSPORTATION Changes to parking fees at Metrooperated lots and garages start today — part of a six-month experiment with innovative pricing methods. But there are already concerns that the pilot program could alienate suburban transit users who are smarting at the prospect of extra fees.

The changes to Metro’s pricing policy will expand the hours parking fees are charged, eliminate some weekend parking that had been free and expand a program that charges “non-riders” more to park at Metro lots and garages. It’s part of an effort by the agency to wring more revenue out of its operations and to help it gather more data about how people use its facilities.

The new pricing structure has been applauded by some transit advocates and planners, but critics — including riders and some suburban elected officials — say the changes may undercut transit usage in places where people are easily lured back to their cars.

They also fear that the new fees could hurt Metro’s weekend ridership — when parking traditionally has been free — and discourage people from using other forms of transit, such as Virginia Railway Express, the

“The good news here is that this is a pilot, so we’ll be able to analyze what the impact is and then make a decision about how to go forward,” said Fairfax County Supervisor Pat Herrity, many of whose constituents use the Franconia-Springfield Metro station.

The times during which Metro will charge for parking weekdays will start two hours earlier, beginning at 7:30 a.m. — and extend until 12:30 a.m., except for Fridays, when fees will be charged until 2 a.m.

And for the first time, the agency will charge for parking on Saturdays; a flat $2 fee will be collected from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m.

Sunday parking will remain free.

The pilot program is estimated to bring in $4 million of revenue

for Metro and is scheduled to last until July 30, although the Metro board could vote to make the changes permanent before then.

Still, the extensive changes have riled some local jurisdictions, who say that Metro failed to loop them in on the project and that the agency’s eagerness for more revenue might discourage people from using the system.

“Parking usage and Metrorail ridership are lowest on weekends when it is currently free to park. … Typical economics would lead to charging for parking when usage is in high demand and supply is low, rather than the reverse,” the Fairfax Board of Supervisors wrote last month. “The result may mean some modest increase in parking revenue at the expense of weekend ridership.”

Is Manning eligible to run for U.S. Senate?

Questions about Chelsea Manning’s eligibility to run for U.S. Senate in Maryland could imperil her already steep path to the Democratic nomination against Sen. Ben Cardin.

In 2013, Manning was sentenced to 35 years in prison and received a dishonorable Army discharge for passing government secrets to WikiLeaks. While her case is on appeal, she is on a form of unpaid active duty, putting her at odds with rules that prohibit military personnel from seeking public office. Experts said the Army would have little to gain by pursuing action against Manning, whose sentence was commuted.

Eugene Fidell, who teaches military justice at Yale, said it’s unlikely the Army would take action against her: “Services don’t like to create martyrs.” (TWP)

The amount for a Metro grant the Trump administration plans to omit from its upcoming budget, contending the 10-year capital program has ended despite the transit agency’s expectation that there is one installment remaining in the $1.5 billion fund, according to Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va. Federal officials argue the program expired with the fiscal year that began in July 2017, even though that leaves Metro with $150 million less than pledged under the bill, Warner’s office said. The corrections officer, Luis J. Privado, 23, was allegedly paid by co-defendant Abiathar A. Vance, 40, to drive Vance and the teen to and from Frederick, Md., late last year, said Frederick police. Police said the 16-year-old has been returned to her family.

Police to use fingerprints to track officers’ time The Baltimore Police Department plans to require officers to scan their fingerprints at the start and end of shifts to prove they’ve worked the hours claimed on their pay slips, officials have confirmed to The Baltimore Sun. BLACKSBURG, VA. It’s been just over two years since 13-year-old Nicole Lovell was found stabbed to death after climbing out her bedroom window in Blacksburg, Va., to meet a much older teenager whom she thought of as her boyfriend.

Prosecutors say the teen was David Eisenhauer, an 18-year-old Virginia Tech student from Columbia, Md., who had met Lovell through social media.

With Eisenhauer’s first-degree murder trial set to begin today, a key question remains largely unanswered: Why? Why would Eisenhauer, a high school track star and freshman engineering student, kill a seventh-grade girl? And what role did his friend, Natalie Keepers, also a Virginia Tech engineering student, play in the killing?

Lovell’s family, the Virginia Tech community and the town of Blacksburg are hoping the trial provides some answers.

Jury selection begins today in Montgomery County Circuit Court in Christiansburg, Va. During her short life, Lovell had endured multiple health problems, including a liver transplant and lymphoma. Her mother said she was bullied because of her weight and a tracheotomy scar.

Investigators have said they believe they first communicated through the online instant messaging app Kik. Bryce Dustin, a friend of Eisenhauer, told The Roanoke Times that Eisenhauer texted him about meeting a teenage girl at a party and later learning she was underage. Dustin said Eisenhauer was afraid the girl would “expose” him and asked if he knew where he could hide a body.

Kristi Snyder, administrator of the Rainbow Riders Child Care Centers in Blacksburg, said local parents were stunned by Lovell’s killing.

A man has been convicted of multiple felonies after authorities say he used a tracking device to monitor a casino patron in order to rob him. Jurors found Kevin Carroll guilty on armed robbery, assault and other charges Friday.

Prosecutors say Carroll stuck a GPS tracking device on a fellow casino gambler’s car. Carroll and an accomplice later conducted a robbery at the man’s home in Montgomery County. The intruders took $6,000 in cash.

Carroll will be sentenced later.

Theme park to rename ‘Rebel Yell’ roller coaster A Virginia amusement park is changing the moniker of a roller coaster named after the war whoop of a Confederate soldier.

Larry Hogan, who said he remains in remission from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, said Thursday he has been diagnosed with “very non-serious skin cancer.” Hogan had skin removed last month from his forehead. POLITICS In the 109 years of the FBI’s existence, it has repeatedly come under fire for abuses of power, privacy or civil rights. From Red Scares to recording and threatening to expose the private conduct of Martin Luther King Jr. to benefiting from bulk surveillance in the digital age, the FBI is accustomed to intense criticism.

What is so unusual about the present circumstances, say current and former law enforcement officials, is the source of the attacks.

The bureau is under fire not from those on the left but rather from conservatives, long the agency’s biggest supporters, as well as from the president who handpicked the FBI’s leader.

GOP critics charge that the birth of the probe into possible coordination between the Trump campaign and agents of the Russian government was fatally infected by the political bias of senior FBI officials — and President Trump tweeted Saturday that the release of a memo on the issue “totally vindicates ‘Trump.’ ” Bureau officials say the accusations in the document produced by House Republicans are inaccurate and — more damaging in the long term — corrode the agency’s ability to remain independent and do its job.

Wray’s defenders say there is a more strategic reason for the new director’s approach — by relying on long-standing law enforcement policies and procedures, he believes the FBI can navigate through the current political storms and get back to a position of widespread trust across the political spectrum, according to people familiar with his thinking.

An Amtrak passenger train hurtling through the early-morning darkness Sunday slammed into a freight train parked along a siding in South Carolina, killing two Amtrak crew members and injuring more than 110 people, authorities said.

The Silver Star was en route from New York to Miami with nearly 150 people aboard around 2:45 a.m. when it struck the CSX train at an estimated 59 mph, Gov. Henry McMaster said. The crash happened about 10 miles south of Columbia, S.C. The governor said investigators

have yet to determine how the Amtrak train ended up on the side track. The National Transportation Safety Board sent investigators to the scene.

In an emailed statement, Amtrak said that it was “deeply saddened” by the deaths and that it was cooperating fully with the NTSB. It did not address the cause of the crash but said CSX maintains all the tracks and signals where the accident happened and controls access to the sidings and yards.

A conductor and engineer aboard the Amtrak locomotive were killed, the coroner’s office said. And 116 people were taken to four hospitals, according to the governor.

At least three patients were hospitalized in critical or serious

condition, with nearly all the rest treated for minor injuries such as cuts, bruises and whiplash.

The locomotives of both trains were left crumpled, the Amtrak engine on its side. One car in the middle of the Amtrak train was snapped in half, forming a V off to one side of the tracks.

It was the third deadly wreck involving Amtrak in less than two months. On Wednesday, a chartered Amtrak train carrying Republican members of Congress slammed into a garbage truck in rural Virginia, killing one person in the truck and injuring six others. And on Dec. 18, an Amtrak train ran off the rails during an inaugural run on a new route south of Tacoma, Wash., killing three people and injuring dozens. MEG KINNARD (AP)

Japan has a new cafe where customers can enjoy coffee brewed and served by a robot barista.

The robot, named Sawyer, debuted last week at Henna Cafe in Tokyo’s downtown business and shopping district of Shibuya. “Would you care for a delicious coffee?” the barista asks. The singlearmed robot scans a ticket purchased from a vending machine and greets the customer. It grinds the coffee beans, fills a filter and pours hot water over a paper cup for up to five people at once. A cup of brewed coffee costs $3 and takes a few minutes.

Sawyer can also make six other hot drinks including cappuccino, hot chocolate and green tea latte. (AP)

4,400-year-old tomb discovered outside Cairo

Archaeologists in Egypt have discovered a 4,400-year-old tomb near the country’s famed pyramids at the Giza plateau just outside Cairo, the Antiquities Ministry said Saturday. The tomb likely belonged to a woman known as Hetpet, who is believed to have been close to ancient Egyptian royals of the Fifth Dynasty. The tomb is made of mud brick and features wall paintings of Hetpet observing different hunting and fishing scenes. (AP)

Study: Mayan population was startlingly vast SCIENCE Researchers using a high-tech aerial mapping technique have found tens of thousands of previously undetected Mayan houses, buildings, defense works and pyramids in the dense jungle of Guatemala’s Peten region, suggesting that millions more people lived there than previously thought. The Mayan culture flourished between roughly 1,000 B.C. and A.D. 900.

The discoveries, which include industrial-size agricultural fields and irrigation canals, were announced Thursday by an alliance of U.S., European and Guatemalan archaeologists working with Guatemala’s Mayan Heritage and Nature Foundation.

The study estimates that roughly 10 million people may have lived within the Maya Lowlands, meaning that extensive food production might have been needed.

“That is two to three times more [inhabitants] than people were saying there were,” said Marcello A. Canuto, a professor of Anthropology at Tulane University.

Researchers used a mapping technique called LiDAR, which stands for Light Detection And Ranging. It bounces pulsed laser light off the ground, revealing contours hidden by dense foliage. The images revealed that the Mayans altered the landscape in a much broader way than previously thought; in some areas, 95 percent of available land was cultivated. (AP)

EDUCATION It is a full five months into the school year, and Isabel Echavarria, a junior at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, hasn’t used her locker once. She’s not even sure she has one. Sean Radley, a sophomore at Tesoro High in Southern California, thinks there may be one book in his locker, but he rarely visits it. Nekko Jones and Dwayne Burrell, freshmen at Cardozo Education Campus in the District, were assigned lockers at the beginning of the year, but neither knows where his is.

Once the gravitational center of the high school day, lockers have lost their allure, and their usefulness seems a relic of an epoch of education that has slipped away. The trend has expanded so rapidly and widely that schools are now removing individual student lockers from their hallways, and builders and designers for many new high schools don’t even include them in their plans.

“It’s a pretty big change that has taken place over the last few years,” said Sean Connor, a principal with Pfluger Architects, a large Texas firm that focuses on school construction. “It used to be the standard to provide individual lockers for every student.

Now, the standard is no lockers or, at most, just a few.”

Why the change? Anyone with a high schooler in their orbit knows that students now want everything they own with them at all times. Books, phones, water bottles, headphones, laptops, tablets, snacks, coats, extra shoes.

Where students used to swap out textbooks between classes, they now navigate the halls bent over by jam-packed backpacks like Himalayan Sherpas shuffling along without a base camp.

Acxel Escobar, a junior at Cardozo, realized early on that he simply had no need for a separate place to keep everything at school. “My freshman year, I kept a few books in my locker and used it,” he said. “But I stopped using it because I had all of my resources in my book bag.”

Business adjustments At DeBourgh Manufacturing, one of a half-dozen major locker manufacturers in the country, school lockers account for 56 percent of its school sales. That’s down 10 percentage points from just eight years ago for the familyowned Colorado company. Now, the company is introducing new products — including smart lockers that are shareable, open with the swipe of an ID and are wired to charge electronic devices — to respond to the downward trend.

And, the company notes, lockers for high school athletic facilities remain in demand. (TWP)

A National Institutes of Health study on the effects of cellphone radio-frequency radiation exposure showed a higher risk of tumors, DNA or tissue damage, and lower body weight in some rodents, but no clear implications for human health.

The study by the National Toxicology Program involved placing test rats and mice into special chambers and exposing them to radiation levels mimicking 2G and 3G phones for nine hours a day.

The strongest finding involved male rats developing malignant schwannomas tumors in the nerves surrounding their hearts. John Bucher, a senior scientist involved in the study, said that this suggested the radiation could be a “weak” carcinogen.

Based on limited research that shows a potentially elevated risk of schwannomas near the brain in people, the International Agency for Research on Cancer lists radiofrequency fields as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”

Newborn rats and their mothers saw changes in weight when exposed to high levels, though the babies grew to normal size.

Redskins are discussing risky tag-and-trade play to help recoup assets NFL The Kirk Cousins saga with the Redskins might not be over after all.

Washington reportedly has had internal discussions about using the franchise tag on Cousins to trade him and recover some form of compensation that was lost in their acquisition of Kansas City quarterback Alex Smith. But doing so would put Washington’s front office in a tricky situation, with Cousins able to influence the trade process.

By tagging Cousins, who is expected to be the most coveted quarterback in free agency, the Redskins would prevent him from hitting the open market when the new league year opens March 14. But Washington wouldn’t be able to trade Cousins until he signed the franchise tag, and therein lies the rub.

Slow-playing the process by

declining to sign would give Cousins leverage because the Redskins couldn’t clear the $34.5 million price from their books until he’s traded. That would keep them from spending in free agency and improving the roster until the draft in April.

Washington went 7-9 in Jay Gruden’s fourth year as head coach, giving it the No. 13 overall pick.

Several quarterback-needy teams are expected to make a run at Cousins, 29, if he becomes a true unrestricted free agent, including the Jets, Broncos and Cardinals. The Jaguars and the Browns have also been discussed as potential destinations for him.

But if the Redskins do tag Cousins, who threw for 4,093 yards with 27 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 2017, he could drag out the signing process.

1 ‘Queer Eye’ Wednesday on Netflix

A futuristic spectacle

‘Altered Carbon,’ Netflix’s sci-fi venture, is a flashy, complex vision of centuries ahead

STREAMING “Altered Carbon,” new on Netflix, adapts Richard K. Morgan’s 2002 novel into a 10-episode series starring Joel Kinnaman as space-warrior turned detective Takeshi Kovacs. Its strategy is to adapt the tone and tropes of hard-boiled detective fiction to futuristic sci-fi, which is why its rainy, neon-noir vision of a future San Francisco (now called Bay City) may remind you strongly of “Blade Runner.”

In this future, human consciousness is downloaded into a “stack,” a gizmo slid into every person’s vertebrae at age 1. These stacks can be swapped into new bodies — or “sleeves” — when the old ones break. This system mostly benefits the rich, who can

buy banks of flashy “designerenhanced” corpses to inhabit.

As we open, the mind of Kovacs, first played by actor Will Yun Lee, and the last of a rebel squad called the Envoys, awakens in Kinnaman’s long, tall Swedishborn body. With his semi-superhuman skills, Kovacs has been brought back to do a job for megamogul Laurens Bancroft (James Purefoy), who wants him to solve a murder — his own. A gap in his memory has left Bancroft clueless as to his own killer.

A sort of Scooby Gang coheres around Kovacs, including the angry Lt. Kristin Ortega (Martha Higareda); a former Marine with tech skills named Vernon (Ato Essandoh); and Poe (a comically touching Chris Conner), the

computer-generated embodiment of the Raven hotel, where Kovacs is the first guest in five decades.

As in martial arts and superhero movies, the amount of punishment these characters can take is so outrageous that the violence hardly registers as violence. The same goes for the sex scenes, for that matter, which also come along often enough.

It’s worth pointing out that this is very much a story that runs on — though it does not recommend — violence against women.

The series is convoluted, digressive and long. You may forget by the end what the beginning was about, as the main case is clouded by others. You’ll be watching a scene that feels like the climax, only to check and find you’ve still

got another two or three or four episodes to go. Eventually, you do arrive at the end, which has a certain mathematical balance and, despite some corniness, prompts deeper feelings than you might have expected.

Whatever else, for fans of Stephen Holder — the character Kinnaman played on “The Killing” — “Altered Carbon” puts the actor back in detective mode.

His body has been muscled to a fare thee well, and energetic use is put to it. But when he is not dispatching thugs, there is that old Holder music, skeptical and laconic, as he spars with foes and with the friends he slowly lets past that tough exterior. It’s good to hear it again. ROBERT LLOYD

eyeballing every inch of film from a raid on the porno studio.

Back in the palatial police HQ, he’s carrying X-rated films and photos when he bumps into a temporary employee, a young woman who’s loaded up with material from her job cataloguing morgue

photos. Their images tumble together in a heap. So death and sex will be part of the show’s mix, along with politics, unrest and corruption.

And dancing. Detective Rath can step up a wall and do a flip! And drugs. He’s addicted to prescription meds.

Based on a best-selling detective novel series by Volker Kutscher, the show is a commentary on the past, of course. But its creators also say it reflects the world of 2018, rebounding from financial crises and fearful about the future. And even though a lot of 21st-century sentiment is anti-globalism, the glories of “Babylon Berlin” make it clear: The future of TV is totally global.
