GOP presidential hopefuls Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul will vie for votes in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri on Tuesday. The Maine caucus is Saturday.

While the unemployment rate is at a three-year low, it remains a key topic in this year’s election.

Economy Open To Interpretation Whether the job market feels stronger depends on your perspective MWi^_d]jed Month by month, the U.S. job market is regaining its health. So many jobs are being added that the unemployment rate has dropped for five straight months. At 8.3 percent, it’s at a three-year low.

Whether the job market actually feels stronger, though, depends on your perspective. The headline numbers mask vast disparities — from the New Yorker thrilled to have found a catering job to the Indianapolis truck driver forced to take a 40 percent pay cut to work again. Even where hiring has picked up, scars from the Great Recession remain. In Fort Madison, Iowa, Pinnacle Foods Group is expanding a canned-meat plant and adding 65 jobs. Yet that same work

President Obama says he deserves re-election despite the nation’s economic troubles. Obama said in a pre-Super Bowl interview on NBC that his administration is creating more than 250,000 jobs a month, the most since 2005 and a reversal from the 750,000 jobs the economy was losing three years ago. Americans divide evenly on whether Obama’s performance warrants a second term. According to a Washington Post-ABC news poll released Sunday, 49 percent think Obama deserves a second term as president, 49 percent don’t think he does, and 2 percent have no opinion. (AP/ THE WASHINGTON POST )

There are still more than four unemployed Americans, on average, for every job opening. In a healthy economy, by contrast, that ratio would be roughly 2-to-1. Sara Pereda, an executive assistant in New York City’s entertainment industry, has applied for several job openings and received no responses, even though she’s sure she was qualified. “You can send out 10 resumes and get one — and that’s a maybe,” Pereda says. (AP)

used to be done at a company plant in Tacoma, Wash., that once employed 160 but has since closed. A government report Friday that employers added a surprising 243,000 jobs in January ignited cheers for the job market, which had been slow to recover in the 2½ years since the recession officially ended. Many economists see signs of a self-fulfilling “virtuous cycle,” in which more jobs fuel more consumer spending, which sparks further hiring and spending and more jobs. Economic data this week could show whether Friday’s unexpectedly strong jobs report was an aberration or a sign of a strengthening economy. As more jobs have been created and the unemployment rate has edged downward, new claims for unemployment insurance have generally declined. But overall, the labor market is in better shape than it was a few months ago. PAUL WISEMAN (AP)/ SUZ Y KHIMM (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Texting while driving, speeding and back-seat hanky-panky aren’t all that parents need to worry about when their kids are in cars: Add secondhand smoke to the list. In the first national estimate of its kind, a report from government researchers says more than 1 in 5 high school students and middle schoolers ride in cars while others are smoking. This kind of secondhand smoke exposure has been linked with breathing problems and allergy symptoms, and more restrictions are needed to prevent it, the report says. With widespread crackdowns on smoking in public, private places including homes and cars are where people encounter secondhand smoke these days. Antismoking advocates have zeroed in on cars because of research showing they’re potentially more dangerous than smoke-filled bars and other less confined areas. The research, from the federal

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was released online Monday in Pediatrics. Overall, 22 percent of teens and pre-teens were exposed to secondhand smoke in cars in 2009, the latest data available. That figure declined gradually during the decade, from 40 percent in 2000, the study found. “The car is the only source of exposure for some of these children, so if you can reduce that exposure, it’s definitely advantageous for health,” said CDC researcher Brian King. Wash. Blast Kills Father, 2 Sons =hW^Wc" MWi^$ The long, bizarre case of a Utah woman missing for two years took a horrific turn Sunday when a powerful house explosion killed the woman’s husband and his two young sons, moments after the boys arrived for a visit that was supposed to be supervised by a social worker. Authorities say it appears the husband, Josh Powell, blew up the house on purpose. The Child Protective Services worker brought the two boys to Powell’s home, and Powell let his sons inside — but then blocked the social worker from entering, Graham Fire and Rescue Chief Gary Franz said. The social work-

8WYaijeho Josh Powell was under investigation in the disappearance of his wife, Susan Powell, 28, from their West Valley City, Utah, home in December 2009. He claimed he had taken the boys on a midnight excursion when she vanished. The case took a bizarre turn last year after Powell’s father, Steve Powell, was arrested for investigation of voyeurism and possessing child pornography. Josh Powell was living at his father’s home at the time, and a judge gave Susan Powell’s parents custody of the boys. (AP)

You may qualify to participate in a clinical research trial of an investigational medication if you meet the following criteria: • Men over 50 years of age • Women over 55 years of age • Have been diagnosed with gout • Have a documented history of heart disease (includes heart attack, stroke, diabetes, blocked arteries, and other major cardiovascular diseases)

er called her supervisors to report that she could smell gas. Moments later, the home exploded. The children had been living with Susan Powell’s parents since last fall. On Wednesday, a judge had denied an attempt by Josh Powell to regain custody, saying she wouldn’t consider returning the two boys to their father until he underwent a psycho-sexual evaluation. Jeffrey Bassett, a lawyer for Josh Powell, says he received a threeword email from his client minutes before the explosion that read, “I’m sorry, goodbye.” Bassett said the email arrived at 12:05 p.m. Sunday, but he didn’t see it until two hours later, when others informed him of the blast. (AP)

If you qualify, you will receive study related visits, study related exams and study medication at no charge.

U.S. Pushes Support for Syrians

Washington urges an aid coalition after U.N. efforts stalled 8[_hkj

The U.S. proposed an international coalition to support Syria’s opposition Sunday after Russia and China blocked a U.N. attempt to end nearly 11 months of bloodshed, raising fears that violence will escalate. Rebel soldiers said force was now the only way to oust President Bashar Assad, while the regime vowed to press its military crackdown. The threat of both sides turning to greater force after Russia and China vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution raises the potential for Syria’s turmoil to move into even a more dangerous new phase that could degenerate into outright civil war. Regime opponents fear that Assad will be emboldened by the feeling he is protected by his top

In the case of Libya, the group also coordinated NATO military operations to protect Libyan civilians, something that is not envisioned in Syria. U.S. officials said an alliance would work to further squeeze the Assad regime by stepping up sanctions against it, uniting disparate Syrian opposition groups providing humanitarian relief for embattled Syrian communities and working to prevent an escalation of violence The main Syrian opposition umbrella group, the Syrian National Council, backed the idea. A deeply sensitive question is whether such a coalition would back the Free Syrian Army. There appears to be hesitation among Western countries, fearing further militarization of the conflict. Can Romney Be Stopped? His resounding win in Nev. opens a clear path to the GOP nomination

Romney’s confidence was clear as he stepped before cameras to claim his Nevada win, focusing on President Obama. “I’ve walked in Nevada neighborhoods, blighted by abandoned homes, where people wonder why Barack Obama failed them. Mr. President, Nevada has had enough of your kind of help,” Romney said to cheers.

Mitt Romney’s big win in Nevada four days after his breakthrough victory in Florida spells big trouble for his remaining rivals. Simply put: Is there any way to stop Romney? There is no question t hat Republicans have begun to coalesce around the former Massachusetts governor’s candidacy in earnest. He swept nearly every voting group in Nevada, including those that have been slow to come aboard, such as The number of tea party activists delegates Mitt and voters who Romney has describe t hempicked up so far. selves as extremely New Gingrich is second in the conservative. GOP, with 30. (AP) Ron Paul and R ick Santor um are fading fast, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult for Newt Gingrich, who had been Romney’s top rival, to chart a clear path to the nomination. He trails Romney in money, momentum and organization in upcoming states. And a calendar of primaries and caucuses favorable to Romney lies ahead. “February is really the death march for second- and third-tier candidates,” Republican strategist Rich Galen said. “If Romney sweeps February, the arc of his effort will be so strong, for most Republicans, it will be over.” A handful of states hold caucuses this week, including Maine, Minnesota and Colorado. Then comes a three-week lull until primaries on Feb. 28 in Arizona and Michigan, where Romney grew up and where his father served as governor.

9edj[dZ[hi Bei_d] >ef[ Hed FWkb

D[mj =_d]h_Y^ Newt Gingrich’s hope for a serious head-to-head contest with Romney diminishes with each loss. The former House speaker is short on cash, and Southern states likely to be most receptive to his candidacy do not hold contests until Super Tuesday, March 6. Nevertheless, Gingrich brushed aside all talk of quitting the race. He said he and his aides have spent much of the past four days retooling a campaign that twice has made him a leader in the polls, yet left him with only one victory (South Carolina) in five states.

Ron Paul, who campaigned hard in Nevada and has staked his entire strategy on winning caucus states, may be bordering on irrelevancy after this shellacking. By raising expectations for a strong finish in Nevada — only to place a weak third — the Texas congressman undercut himself going into the next round of caucus contests. Paul’s ultimate goal — keeping his libertarian-leaning platform part of the national political conversation — could also be damaged as his losses pile up.

H_Ya IWdjehkc Rick Santorum has watched his candidacy lose steam since his win in Iowa early last month. The former Pennsylvania senator spent little time campaigning in Nevada; his strong social conservatism was never a good fit in a state best known for drinking, gambling and legalized prostitution. He’s looking ahead to caucuses in Colorado and the non-binding Missouri primary next week. But Santorum is still pulling in enough money — $1 million alone last week, his advisers say — to keep his shoestring operation alive. (AP)

He barely acknowledged his GOP rivals, Gingrich included. To be sure, Romney continues to face challenges. He was at his best as a candidate after Gingrich won South Carolina and appeared to be a real threat going into Florida and beyond. Romney quickly retooled his approach, sharpening his attacks on Gingrich on the campaign trail and in two back-to-back debates. But without a strong rival, Romney’s weaknesses as a candidate and his propensity for gaffes become magnified. He made a n e ye-poppi ng unforced error this week, telling CNN, “I’m not concerned about the very poor.” He went on to explain himself, saying those most in need can rely on social programs and that he wants to champion the middle class instead. Still, Romney’s position coming out of Nevada is strong and getting stronger. “When you match this up with Florida, it may well mean this is the beginning of the triumphant march to the nomination,” said Galen, the GOP strategist. That was the message from Metro officials Thursday as they warned that passengers on the system’s busiest line can expect years of inconvenience. Metro also detailed a need to hire 877 more workers to fix and maintain the aging system and operate new service. Even after new track circuits and switches are installed on the Red Line over the next three years — safety upgrades recommended by the National Transportation Safety Board — Metro officials said there will be a “steady stream

to be a lack of progress. “The real question on people’s mind is ‘When is my ride going to get better?’” she said. “Three years kind of makes me gasp.” According to officials and board members, Metro has for years neglected repairs and maintenance, and it downsized its engineering workforce. “We didn’t have enough people, and we didn’t have enough funds,” said Rob Troup, assistant general manager of Metro’s transit infrastructure and engineering services division. For example, there is a backlog of about 75,000 rail ties — equipment that supports the rails — that need to be replaced, he said. Metro General Manager Richard Sarles had said in January that the authority would need to fill 1,017 new positions to operate the new Silver Line. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Arlington Probe in Question Members of Congress are questioning why nobody has yet been prosecuted as part of a criminal investigation of mismanagement at Arlington National Cemetery. Police: 11 Arrested At Occupy Camp Officers clear away tents at McPherson Square protest site MWi^_d]jed Authorities say 11 people have been arrested in Washington’s McPherson Square since Park Police began clearing away tents from one of the nation’s last remaining Occupy sites on Saturday. Dav id Schlosser, who is a spokesman for the U.S. Park Police, said Sunday that one of those arrested was charged with felony assault on a police officer and assault with a deadly weapon. That person is accused of hitting an officer in the face with a brick Saturday evening. The officer was treated at a hospital.

Three others were charged with assault on a police officer. Schlosser says officials are continuing to clear the park of unsanitary conditions, though so far Sunday things remained mostly peaceful. On Saturday night, the protesters vowed to continue their movement and urged followers to remain nonviolent. On Sunday, Metro reopened the Vermont Avenue side of its McPherson Square station. The transit agency said part of the station had been closed because of police activity related to clearing of the nearby McPherson Square park, which had been the scene of Occupy D.C. protests. Metro spokesman Dan Stessel says U.S. Park Police gave approval to reopen the entrance about 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. (AP)

Huguely Trial Set To Begin Monday Attorneys say death of ex-athlete’s former beau was an accident 9^Whbejj[il_bb[" LW$ It’s been nearly two years since University of Virginia lacrosse player Yeardley Love was found dead facedown in a pool of blood on a pillow in her bed. Within hours, her ex-boyfriend, George Huguely V, a lacrosse player from Chevy Chase, Md., was charged in her death and jailed in Charlottesville, where he remains. Beginning Monday in a courtroom here, the 12-member jury and three alternates who will hear the case against Huguely, 24, will be chosen from among 160 potential jurors. By police accounts, Huguely is a willful, premeditating killer who said in a videotaped statement that he kicked through Love’s bedroom door, shook her until her head banged against a wall and left her bleeding. On his way out, he took a computer and tossed it in a trash bin, say police, who recovered the laptop. His attorneys counter that whatever happened during that final argument in Love’s off-campus apartment was an “accident with a tragic outcome.” The fates of the two accomplished athletes on the verge of graduation from a prominent university have attracted and held national attention.

Tim Thomas’ return to the nation’s capital was less political and more successful. Playing about 10 blocks from the White House — a place he famously avoided two weeks ago — Thomas carried a shutout deep into the third period Sunday as the Boston Bruins snapped a two-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over the Capitals. T hom a s ’ n o show, accompanied by a Facebook post about a federal government that he said was “out of control,” overshadowed his teammates’ day of celebration when the reigning Stanley Cup champions were honored by President Obama on Jan. 23. He didn’t play the next day, when the Bruins lost 5-3 to the Capitals. But last year’s Vezina Trophy winner and playoff MVP was in fine form for a Super Bowl Sunday matinee, the first time all season he’s played on back-to-back days. Among his 35 saves was a quick reflex stop against Alex Ovechkin when the Capitals forward had an open look after a rebound. “Tim’s capable of doing that for us, and he’s done that a lot in the past,” Boston coach Claude Julien said. “And I thought he was on top

of his game today.” Thomas was booed pregame, but there’s no telling how much of it was the standard disdain shown by Washington fans for any opposing star player. “I think I’m pretty much booed at every arena, wouldn’t you say?” Thomas said. “Even before any-

thing happened?” Marcus Johansson scored the lone goal for the Capitals, who have lost three of four and haven’t scored a power-play goal in seven games. Washington also missed a chance to overtake the Florida Panthers once again for first place in the Southeast Division. The Capitals also lost center Brooks Laich, who left the game after being hit into the boards by Dennis Seidenberg with 8 minutes remaining in the second period. Laich was walking on crutches and wearing a left knee brace after the game. Coach Dale Hunter said Laich was day to day. JOSEPH WHITE (AP)

Yea, though NBC walks

instinct for backstage meows and a firm grip on its own sense of camp control, which, if nothing else, sets it apart from Ryan Murphy’s now fully atrocious “Glee.” Will “Smash,” premiering Monday at 10 p.m., pull NBC back from its inexorable slide? Who knows; who cares? In another time and place, “Smash” would have the assured vibe of a hit. But in this time and this place (this too-smarmy, post-“Rent” place, where everyone thinks way too much about becoming a singing star), “Smash” too often swoons from an incurable disease known as

ÇIcWi^È medÊj Yedl[hj Wdoed[ je j^[ b_\[ijob[" Xkj _j m_bb _djh_]k[ j^ei[ m^e Wh[ Wbh[WZo Z[[f _d _j$ the theater bug. Which makes sense, because this is a show made by and for people with a lifelong case of Broadway’s restless leg syndrome. Breaking out into song and dance (with full accompaniment) is

just a matter of course here, and whether you think that’s wonderful or not depends entirely on your predisposition for spotlights. “Smash” won’t convert anyone to the lifestyle, but it will intrigue those who are already deep in it. Let this be your litmus test: I’ll put on a torn leotard and shout “Five, six, seven, eight!” and if you’re still here by “eight,” then “Smash” might be just the thing. “Smash” has weaknesses, to be sure: Debra Messing’s performance as Broadway musical writer Julia makes me think of chenille throws and long naps; the dialogue gets hacky; the ghost of “The Playboy Club” sends a chill through the chorus-girl dressing room scenes. But “Smash” also has a confidence that speaks to its pedigree: Creator Theresa Rebeck is an accomplished playwright and TV producer/writer; and the show’s other producers and writers have a wealth of stage and screen experience. That expertise makes the show feel special, enough so that Broadway junkies won’t be disappointed. HANK STUE VER (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Role of a Lifetime Elizabeth Taylor was many things: a talented actress whose first star turn came at age 12 in “National Velvet”; an international celebrity; and a voluptuous, violet-eyed, raven-haired beauty. But a feminist? In “The Accidental Feminist” ($23, Walker & Co.), cultural critic M.G. “Arizona has been at the forefront of national concerns about how we treat minorities in this country, which is a euphemized way of saying that it has developed a reputation for serious ethnic problems. State Rep. Cecil Ash’s proposal that a Latin American celebratory holiday be accompanied by a statewide ‘Caucasian Day’ is really not helping. Plus, don’t we already celebrate white people on July 4?” — Frances Martel at MEDIATE.COM is a bit stunned by Ash’s idea after Arizona Rep. Richard Miranda, a Democrat, proposed a Latin American day for the state on the legislature floor last week.

“Ford’s not pleased with the Chevy truck super bowl ad that implies Ford trucks aren’t built tough enough to survive the Mayan apocalypse. How upset are they? They’re so [upset], the automaker’s sent letters to both GM and NBC asking them to pull the ad from tonight’s big game. Well, shoot, this may be more fun than the Super Bowl itself.” — Matt Hardigree at JALOPNIK.COM reacts to news that Ford reportedly sent a cease-and-desist order to General Motors about its ad, which questions a Ford truck’s durability.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) If it’s bargains you’re looking for, you can certainly find some today — but you may have to look in some unusual places. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You’re seeking a way out of a current situation, but you may be acting prematurely. Things have a way of working out — and they will soon. ARIES (March 21-April 19) Contact from an old friend reminds you of something that has been missing for some time. Today is the day to get it back. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Unusual behavior on your part is likely to spark criticism from some, and others are likely to mount an investigation of sorts.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You may feel as though your privacy is being threatened. Now is no time to run and hide; express your objections directly. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You’ve been surprised at the content of your dreams of late — and today you have the chance to analyze imagery and symbols in some detail. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You are not comfortable with the instructions you’ve been given, but you know you must follow them if progress is to be made.
