Officials are investigating a mom’s complaint that her toddler’s eyebrows were waxed without permission at a daycare facility in Pasco, Wash. Alyssa Salgado said that after she picked up her 2-year-old daughter, she noticed that her eyebrows were different. Chefs for Norway’s 109 Olympic athletes in South Korea found themselves inundated with eggs after mistakenly ordering 15,000 instead of 1,500, The Guardian reported Thursday. Chef Stale Johansen said his team “received half a truckload of eggs” and that there was “no end to the delivery.” Rather than devise a bunch of eggintensive recipes for the Norwegians, the chef was able to return 13,500 unneeded eggs. Historian Zachary M. Schrag, who wrote “The Great Society Subway,” about Metro’s history, said that the decor is a relic of the car-crazy era when Metro opened. “All of this goes back to a sort of more basic sense that ‘this is not going to be transportation of the last resort, this is going to be transportation that people use.’ ” Schrag said the amenities — air conditioning, padded seats, tinted windows — were designed to meet middle-class expectations. “These are not simple utilitarian devices,” he said.
A recently concluded investigation by Metro’s Office of Inspector General found that for decades, requirements for its rail car carpet were likely written to favor one supplier. The “100 percent pure virgin wool” carpet was made to specifications no longer in use in the industry, the inspector general said, resulting in favoritism toward the contractor. And the carpet’s compliance testing was done by a laboratory with ties to the carpet manufacturer. Metro suspended orders for the carpet in response to the investigation.
The carpet is a source of both nostalgia and derision among riders. People are especially put off by the way it soaks up liquids — be it rain, spilled beverages or um, other fluids — and its smells. “I don’t think carpet is really appropriate. ... I think it’s unsanitary,” Metro rider Jasmin Dixon said. “It holds a lot of smell and dirt.” Heidi Faller, a federal government employee, recalled being impressed by the train interiors when she moved to region two decades ago. “But I think it’s still the same carpet,” she said.

A Florida woman says Spirit Airlines told her to flush her hamster down an airport toilet. Belen Aldecosea, 21, was flying home from college out of Baltimore International Airport with her emotional support rodent Pebbles. She said Spirit had told her it was OK to bring Pebbles, and then refused to allow the animal on board, encouraging her to flush him, which she did. She is considering suing Spirit over conflicting instructions. (AP)

BALTIMORE Jurors started deliberating Thursday in a case involving one of the worst U.S. police corruption scandals in recent memory after hearing nearly three weeks of testimony from drug dealers, a crooked bail bondsman and disgraced Baltimore detectives who detailed astonishing levels of police misconduct. The two detectives on trial face robbery, extortion and racketeering charges that could land them up to life in prison if convicted. The trial in a federal courthouse has been dominated by testimony of four ex-detectives who worked alongside the defendants in an elite unit known as the Gun Trace Task Force. Those former detectives pleaded guilty to corruption charges about their time on the squad, which was once praised as a group of hard-charging officers chipping away at the tide of illegal guns on city streets. They testified on behalf of the government in the hopes of shaving years off their prison sentences. The former law enforcers testified that the unit was actually made up of uniformed thugs who stole cash, resold looted narcotics and lied under oath to cover their tracks. Wearing lockup

jumpsuits, the ex-detectives admitted to everything from armed home invasions to staging fictitious crime scenes and routinely defrauding their department. Assistant U.S. attorney Leo Wise described the two detectives on trial as “hunters” who “preyed upon the weak and the vulnerable” when their rogue police unit wasn’t scouring the city trying to find large-scale drug dealers to rob. Defense attorney Jenifer Wicks delivered a fiery closing argument on behalf of Detective Marcus Taylor. She told jurors the government went to the “depths of the criminal underworld” to find a parade of “professional liars” as witnesses. Detective Daniel Hersl’s lead attorney, William Purpura,
attacked the veracity of the four disgraced detectives, noting that they’ve admitted to lying for years to juries, judges, colleagues and their families. “They want that ‘get out of jail free’ card,” Purpura said. The detectives on trial did not testify. It’s not clear when the ex-detectives who pleaded guilty will be sentenced by a federal judge. Even public defenders, who routinely question the testimony of police, were shocked by the sordid revelations exposed at the trial, saying there could be a few thousand tainted cases stretching back to 2008. Baby octopus birth draws 600K views There’s no need to panic, this isn’t the invasion of alien life-forms. It’s the birth of a baby octopus. A 10-second video of a baby Caribbean Reef octopus being hatched has been watched more than 600,000 times since it was posted to Twitter on Wednesday by the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center. It’s the first attempt to hatch octopuses at the aquarium, said Julie Levans, senior curator of fishes, herpetology and invertebrates. She added that about 15 to 20 baby octopuses have been born over the past few days. Levans said the octopus exhibit will not feature the offspring until they grow to be the size of a golf ball. “Right now they’re about the length of your pinkie nail,” she said. “Super tiny, super adorable.” (TWP)
INCREASE IN D.C. CHARTER SCHOOL ENROLLMENT
The increase in enrollment at D.C. public charter schools this academic year, with those institutions accounting for nearly half of all public school students in the District. Enrollment in the District’s traditional public schools declined slightly this academic year, breaking six years of consecutive growth, according to figures released this week by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education. D.C. Public Schools — the traditional system run by a chancellor — lost 400 students this year, dropping its total enrollment to 48,144. (TWP)

A former Uber driver has been convicted of attempting to kill a Maryland police Hemming officer with a homemade miniature shotgun. Jonathan Hemming, of Gaithersburg, was convicted Wednesday of trying to kill Montgomery County Police Detective Donnie Oaks in May 2016. Ex-O’Malley aide says she was sexually harassed A former press secretary to former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley told the women’s caucus of the state legislature she was the target of sexual harassment by lawmakers. Nina Smith said she recalls being harassed by six lawmakers in various ways. She did not provide names of those lawmakers, but said the incidents ranged from crude jokes to being touched without her permission. She was speaking as the caucus considered recommendations for dealing with sexual harassment. (AP)

Senate votes to delay paid leave requirement The Maryland Senate has voted to delay until July a law requiring many businesses to provide paid sick leave. The vote came Thursday, just three days before the new law was scheduled to take effect. Those who pushed for the delay say businesses aren’t ready to allow the estimated 700,000 workers without paid sick leave to start accruing it. The General Assembly voted last month to override Gov. Larry Hogan’s veto of the bill. Hogan had said the bill would be damaging to small businesses. (AP)

HEALTH “Hanged.” The front page of the New York Daily News said it all in one word on Aug. 13, 2014: Comedian Robin Williams was dead at 63. The headline contravened recommendations of the World Health Organization and suicide prevention experts for how the media should cover suicide, including “toning down” accounts to avoid inspiring similar deaths. Williams’ death appears to be associated with a 10 percent rise in the number of suicides in the U.S. in the five months that followed, according to a study published Wednesday in PLOS ONE. That increase was especially large among men ages 30 to 44, whose suicide rate rose almost 13 percent. Even more significant was a 32.3 percent spike in suicides by suffocation, which is how Williams died. “That’s very rare to see an effect so big you just need the statistics to confirm it. You can see it with the naked eye,” said lead author David S. Fink, referring to a graph comparing suicides in the five months after Williams’ death with the same five months the previous year. researchers at Columbia University estimated that the number of suicides from August to December 2014 should have been 16,849. Instead, the number was 18,690. Lahrs Mehlum, director of Norway’s Centre for Suicide Prevention, told The Washington Post by email there were “all too many examples of unfortunate presentations of the case of Robin Williams’ suicide. Many journalists failed to mention the huge health problems Williams struggled with (both mentally and physically), but rather portrayed a glorified version of the event. ... Another breach of these guidelines was the explicit reporting of the suicide method. ” The phenomenon of “copycat”
suicides is not new. Scientists often cite it as the “Werther effect,” from the 1774 novel “The Sorrows of Young Werther” by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. After publication of the book, whose protagonist takes his own life, there was an outbreak of similar suicides all over Europe. Fink knows there is no easy solution to the problem. “There are so many little pieces,” he said. “[For instance], we know there’s an environmental component that’s going to affect them. A man’s portrait has hung for years outside the chambers of the chief justice of Massachusetts’ highest court. The problem? No one knows who he is. It’s a mystery that has stumped officials at the Supreme Judicial Court for more than a decade. Now they’re turning to the public for help in cracking the case of the unknown justice. Officials say they believe the man may have sat on the bench sometime between 1780 and 1820. They have ruled out that he was a chief justice, but say he must have been an associate justice. Even the artist remains unknown. Whoever comes forward with reliable authentication of the portrait will be invited to the unveiling of the plaque bearing the mystery justice’s name. (AP)

Bermuda has abolished same-sex marriage less than a year after it was legalized, replacing the same-sex unions with domestic partnerships. Bermuda Gov. John Rankin signed a bill into law Wednesday that reverses the earlier Supreme Court ruling. The new law gives domestic partners in the British island territory similar rights as married couples — but without the legal title. The official said that El Shafee Elsheikh and Alexanda Amon Kotey were captured in January in eastern Syria. The two men are among four members of the cell that captured, tortured and beheaded more than two dozen hostages, including U.S. journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff, and U.S. aid worker Peter Kassig. Dow plummets more than 1,000 Index down 10 percent from record as market sinks into a correction MARKETS Stocks plunged Thursday, and for the second time in four days the Dow Jones industrial average sank more than 1,000 points. The two best-known stock market indexes, the Dow and the Standard & Poor’s 500, have dropped 10 percent from their all-time highs Jan. 26. That means they are in what is known on Wall Street as a “correction,” their first in almost two years. Stocks fell further as the day wore on and suffered their fifth loss in the past six trading days. Many of the companies that led the market’s gains over the past year have struggled badly in the past week. Those included technology companies, banks, retailers and travel companies. After huge gains in the first weeks of this year, stocks started to tumble last Friday after the Labor Department said workers’ wages grew at a fast rate in January. That’s good for the economy, but investors worried it will hurt corporate profits and that rising wages are a sign of faster inflation. That could lead the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates at a faster pace, which would act as a brake on the economy.

TECHNOLOGY Twitter made money for the first time in its nearly 12-year history, a milestone that satisfied investors in the short term but might not resolve the company’s broader problems any time soon. The company grew revenue by 2 percent to $732 million in the final three months of 2017. That was above the $687 million that analysts were expecting. Its net income — a first — was $91 million, or 12 cents per share. But the company is still struggling to get people to sign up, despite the attention President Trump’s tweets have drawn to the service. One problem: Anyone can read tweets without signing up. As a result, Twitter’s user base (330 million) pales compared with Facebook (2.2 billion) and Facebook-owned Instagram (800 million). Twitter hadn’t profited until now because — competing with Facebook, Google and others — it didn’t attract enough ad revenue to make up for its expenses. But it’s been cutting costs and focusing on new revenue streams, such as live video. While Twitter is well-known, it remains difficult to use, making it hard for the company to explain to people why they need it. An about-face on deficits After years advocating for spending cuts, many Republicans now back huge hikes

POLITICS Republicans rode the tea party wave to power eight years ago on a message of fiscal responsibility and attacking budget deficits, and kept at it during President Barack Obama’s two terms. That was then. The Republican-led Congress on Thursday was rounding up support for a bipartisan budget bill that would put the government on track for annual deficits topping $1 trillion, a gap last seen toward the end of Obama’s first term. The projection for massive budget deficits has split Republicans. Dedicated fiscal conservatives criticized the plan while others accepted it as a necessary compromise to shore up military spending and keep the government running. “I don’t think there’s any question but that there’s a bury-yourhead-in-the-sand view of the deficit and the debt issues relative to this Congress and this administration,” said former senator Judd Gregg, R-N.H., who once led the Senate Budget Committee. Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said the budget agreement was “doubling down on the irresponsible mentality in Congress of spend now, pay later. To say I am discouraged by the outcome of these negotiations would be an understatement.” Corker voted for the recent Republican tax cut after raising similar concerns in the weeks leading up to the vote. Republicans are pinning their long-term hopes on their $1.5 trillion tax cut, which they say eventually will stimulate enough economic growth to help reduce the deficit. The package is supported by defense hawks, in addition to those representing states that would benefit from $89 billion in aid to speed recovery from last year’s hurricanes and wildfires. Still, some GOP activists worried that the deal reinforces the notion that congressional Republicans are not delivering on their promises to slash spending and reduce the size of government. In 2011, Rep. Paul Ryan, RWis., then chairman of the House Budget Committee, proposed a budget-slashing plan that would get the deficit down to $415 billion in 2019. Ryan is now speaker of the House, and the tax and spending plan he is advancing would put the deficit at almost three times the amount he

U.S. bombs pro-Syrian forces Russia calls America’s presence in Syria ‘illegal’ after an overnight clash MIDDLE EAST Syria and Russia condemned America’s military presence in Syria as “illegal” on Thursday after an overnight confrontation in which U.S. warplanes bombed pro-Syrian government forces as they approached a U.S.supported base. U.S. forces targeted the progovernment troops with airstrikes and artillery after they launched an attack against a base belonging to the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces in the eastern province of Deir alZour, according to Col. MILITARY Military members who harass or bully people on the job or online can now be certain of a permanent mark on their service record, according to a new Pentagon policy on harassment. The policy announced Thursday pulls together a complicated mix of rules governing sexual harassment, bullying, hazing and other forms of hostile online behavior and workplace discrimination. The goal is to clarify the process for victims filing complaints and make sure that those responsible are held to account for their actions. The overhaul comes almost a year after an online nude photo-sharing scandal rocked the Marine Corps. The ensuing criminal investigation forced leaders across all the military services to create more vigorous social media standards. Pentagon officials said consolidating various harassment policies will make it easier for victims to report problems, seek help and see the consequences for offenders. Until now, some members of the military who engaged in such actions could face punishment but then see any mention of the infractions expunged from their records. The military services will have 60 days to develop plans to put in place the policy. “We owe our service members every protection we can give them,” said Robert Wilkie, defense undersecretary for personnel. It’s a scenario the Lakers have been gaming out for over a year. But the Cavaliers clearly decided they weren’t going to waste what could be James’ final season in Cleveland. By making deals for young players with years remaining on their contracts, they also are able to provide James with pieces that can help if he chooses to re-sign. On a team with an aging roster, adding a trio of 25-year-olds (Clarkson, Nance and Hood) will feel like a breath of fresh air.
ANALYSIS When Cleveland began its NBA trade deadline day with a stunning deal, sending Isaiah Thomas to the Lakers, reaction from around the league wasn’t exactly positive. “Cleveland helped the Lakers get LeBron [James],” texted one executive. Another was more blunt: “What the f—?” The Cavaliers entered the day knowing they needed to make at least one deal before the deadline passed. After a month of losing and infighting, blowout losses and damaging stories about the state of the locker room and the relationship between James and owner Dan Gilbert, no team required more of a shake-up. Still, few expected this much of a shake-up, and for it to begin with a trade with the Lakers, a move that could potentially help lure James and another star to Los Angeles this summer. But after the initial confusion
over the Cavs shipping Thomas west for two young players, Cleveland kept dealing — and the picture grew clearer. Over the course of an hour, the Cavs brought in Rodney Hood from the Jazz and George Hill from the Kings to go with the acquisitions of Jordan Clarkson and Larry Nance Jr. from the Lakers. Cleveland shipped out Thomas, Channing Frye, Jae Crowder, Derrick Rose, Iman Shumpert, Dwyane Wade and its 2018 first-round pick. The result of all that dealing? The Cavaliers are once again the favorites to return to the NBA Finals in the Eastern Conference after remaking their roster with a blend of youth, athleticism, shooting and defense. The Cavaliers, knowing they needed to do something to help persuade James to stay, decided to swing for the fences. The early confusion over Cleveland’s moves centered

Kukors, 28, told authorities that Sean Hutchison took sexually explicit photos of her, according to a search warrant filed by a federal agent. She reported that he kissed and touched her when she was 16 and initiated sexual activity when she was 17. Hutchison, 46, denies the abuse and has not been charged with a crime. At 22, Shiffrin has found that elite status is accompanied by mountains of pressure ALPINE SKIING The numbers lay out a plain case that’s as easy to argue as the sky is blue or rock beats scissors. Mikaela Shiffrin is the best female Alpine ski racer in the world. Not yet 23, she is on a pace that could leave her as the most decorated World Cup racer ever. She already owns one Olympic gold medal and is favored to win two more. Still, when she climbs into the start gate, she can be surprisingly vulnerable. She is the rare elite athlete who will tell you that pressure can be palpable. “I get so nervous; I was throwing up last year,” Shiffrin said. “It’s like, the races I’m supposed to win, I worry about what happens if I don’t. Who am I letting down? My family? The media? ...
I was listening, and I had never really listened to those things.” In her second Olympics, this is Shiffrin: capable of confidently executing her plan and winning by margins with which ski racing is unfamiliar but simultaneously batting the hamsters in her head. “It’s definitely more pressure for me to repeat than to do something new,” she said. This season on the World Cup circuit, Alpine skiing’s highest level of competition, Shiffrin has won five of the seven slalom races. In none of those victories has her nearest competitor come within three-quarters of a second of her time — a blink for most of us, enough time to run errands and do laundry in ski racing. Throw in her two victories in

events from Dec. 19 to Jan. 9, she skidded. She enters her second Olympics with two seventh-place finishes (one downhill, one giant slalom) and three failures to finish (in super-G, giant slalom and slalom) in her past five events. No woman has won more World Cup ski races than American Lindsey Vonn, 33. Of Vonn’s 81 victories, seven came before she turned 23. Shiffrin, who will turn 23 in March, already has 41. The career record for either gender, is Ingemar Stenmark’s 86 victories. Four years ago at Sochi, Shiffrin was a surprise slalom champion who had never appeared on such a stage. Now, just as people gaped at her triumphs, her stumbles stand out. “I wasn’t dealing with any of that external pressure four years ago,” Shiffrin said before the season. “Now I’ve started to notice it. I’m in a different phase of my life.”

The American contingent that has poured into South Korea for the PyeongChang Olympics features past champions — 37 of the 103 veteran Olympians on the squad are former medalists — and rising phenoms, including six 17-year-olds. Somewhere in the middle is an Alpine skier who might prove to be Team USA’s brightest star of all. Mikaela Shiffrin (see page 17) is entering the prime of her career with an Olympic title already in her trophy case and space in her carry-on luggage to bring back a couple of more medals from South Korea. The U.S. Olympic Committee’s full roster has 242 men and women in all, the largest team that any nation has ever sent to a Winter Games, beating the mark of 230 set by the U.S. squad four years ago in Sochi, Russia. Four years ago, while going for his third halfpipe gold medal in three Olympics, White fell twice in his first run of the finals and left Russia without a medal. Vonn, 33, has been cautious, monitoring conditions with care and focusing on peaking at the right time. Gus Kenworthy Kenworthy’s story has made him one of the most visible pitchmen in the lead-up to the games. Although he had already found success — Kenworthy was a silver medalist in the inaugural slopestyle competition at Sochi — he knew he was holding back. Kenworthy, 26, says that coming out of the closet in 2015 freed him up to be himself, and raised his potential as a competitor. Along with figure skater Adam Rippon, Kenworthy is one of two openly gay men on Team USA. Kenworthy didn’t qualify for the halfpipe but is projected by AP to win gold in slopestyle after placing second at last year’s world championships. G.H.

At 18, Chen is perhaps the most innovative men’s skater in the world. The two-time national champion is the only man to land five quads — jumps with four revolutions — in a program, and he plans to do it again at the Olympics. He’s swept every event in his Olympic season, including titles at the ISU Grand Prix, the Four Continents Championships and a U.S. title in which his total score was 40 points higher than the secondplace finisher. With her infectious personality and barely tapped potential, Biney is a bright young hope for the future of the U.S. in a sport dominated by the Netherlands, South Korea and Canada. She was born in Ghana, but at age 5 visited her father in Wheaton, Md., and never went home. As part of the DC-ICE program, a nonprofit meant to introduce the sport to inner-city kids, Biney learned to race on Saturday mornings at Fort Dupont Ice Arena in Washington. She and her father relocated to Reston, Va., where she attended South Lakes High School before moving to Kearns, Utah, to train full time and complete her senior year of classes online. Biney, who turned 18 on Jan. 28, won the women’s 500 meters at the U.S. team trials, becoming the first African-American woman to qualify in speedskating. She has only recently started doing weight training, and coaches say her technique has a lot of room for growth. R.M./G.H.

Although the 17-year-old from Torrance, Calif., firmly identifies as American, her parents are from South Korea, so her Korean heritage and ability to speak the language give her great appeal in the host country. The high-flying halfpipe prodigy won a silver medal at the X Games in 2014, but at 13 years old, she missed out on Sochi because the Olympics don’t allow anyone younger than 15 to compete. She has since won the X Games four times — including when she landed back-to-back 1080s this year — and is the favorite to win halfpipe gold. G.H.
Two months younger than Kim, the slopestyle and big air specialist from Silverthorne, Colo., could become the youngest U.S. snowboarder to medal. Kelly Clark, who will compete in the halfpipe in the Winter Games for a fifth time, won gold at 18. Gerard was fourth in slopestyle at this year’s X Games and is currently No. 1 in the discipline’s World Cup standings. Born outside of Cleveland, he began snowboarding at 2 years old. ‘15:17’ can’t get on track Director Clint Eastwood’s take on a real-life foiled terror attack feels out of balance FILM REVIEW In “The 15:17 to Paris,” director Clint Eastwood has taken his famously no-frills filmmaking further than ever before. Having already dispensed with many of the typical accoutrements of Hollywood filmmaking — lengthy development, a battery of takes, any handwringing at all — he has, with characteristically little anguish, jettisoned actors from the picture, too. Who needs ‘em? Truth be told, there are numerous professional actors in “15:17,” about the foiled terrorist attack on a 2015 Paris-bound train. But the three central characters, and even many of the extras, are played by themselves. The movie, simple and straightforward, derives most of its appeal from its distinctly un-Hollywood-ness.
That’s enough to make “15:17” a refreshingly humble artifact in the often bombastic genre of terrorism thrillers. But it’s not the quality of the acting that limits Eastwood’s film. It’s a threadbare script (based on the book the trio wrote with Jeffery E. Stern) that fails to find much of a story to tell behind how Oregon National Guardsman Alek Skarlatos, U.S. Air Force Airman First Class Spencer Stone and their friend Anthony Sadler, a college student, tackled and subdued an assailant armed with an AK-47 and nearly 300 rounds of ammunition. The film flashes through key points in their lives. Judy Greer and Jenna Fischer drop in as single moms. There is Thomas Lennon as a school principal and Tony Hale as a gym teacher. Really,

what any of them are doing in the film is a little uncertain. “15:17” is even more out of balance once it gets to the guys backpacking through Europe ahead of the attack. As they philosophize and plot their next party, a Richard Linklater film is almost at risk of breaking out. “15:17” is a brief ride at 94 minutes but it’s a meandering one littered with
narrative gaps and a missing sense of purpose. Eastwood feels less engaged with the material, content to settle for recreating a patriotic outliner in an otherwise tragic recent history of terrorism. Context is also not one of the attributes of “15:17.” It’s too contented with the heroism of a few Americans to take any notice of anything else. The thwarted attack came amid a rash of terror across France. Three months later, 130 would die in coordinated suicide bombings in Paris. Eleven months later, 84 would die in Nice when a truck drove through crowds celebrating Bastille Day. These heroes deserve all the praise. But zoom out a little and it’s hard not to see Eastwood’s America-centric focus as selfserving. JAKE COYLE (AP)

Filmmaker Michael Haneke’s “Happy End” has a well-off family in northern France exploring the gray area between murder and assisted suicide as an act of love. There’s an implicit social critique here, as there often is in Haneke’s work. Life is ugly and unfair and — for those who have more money than sense — it sometimes lasts longer than is healthy. Quadruple threat: 4 short films on the damage we do him; a German film based on the 2015 al-Shabab terrorist attack on a bus near the KenyaSomalia border; an Australian comedy that ends up being a “who’s on first?” routine in a psychiatrist’s office; and a British film about a deaf girl being failed by her family. Leaving aside the (excellent) Aussie comedy “The Eleven O’Clock,” the remaining four films deal with threats. Three of them (“DeKalb Elementary,” about the school shooter; “My Nephew Emmett,” about Till; and “Watu Wote: All of Us,” about the bus attack) are based on real-life events. But it’s the one about the deaf girl that’s the scariest. In “The Silent Child,” Joanne, a social worker, comes to the house to teach 4-year-old Libby to sign. Up until this point, Libby has been almost wholly unable to communicate with anyone (she has some hearing in one ear, so her parents assumed she was simply slow to talk, so they didn’t even know about her deafness). They emphasize that they want her to lip-read and speak. Joanne — you know, the EXPERT — thinks signing is the way to go, at least for now. Under her tutelage, Libby blossoms. She’s 4, and for the first time she can
‘Peter Rabbit’ messes with a timeless tale

With most Oscar nominations, you know what to expect. The best picture category will have at least one period drama, one based-on-real-life story (ideally about a person with a disability) and a movie with at least one scene featuring a sobbing woman. Best actress? At least one real-life character, one woman who sobs in at least one scene, one Meryl Streep. You know the drill. Then there are the short films. Because the only major rule for the Oscars’ shorts categories — animated, live action and documentary — is that the films have to be 40 minutes or less, almost anything goes. This year’s live-action nominees are especially worth your (short) time. (You can see them, along with the animated short nominees, now at the E Street Cinema; screenings of the short-subject documentary nominees begin next week at the West End Cinema). There’s a movie about the murder of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old who was lynched in Mississippi in 1955; one about a man who bursts into an elementary school intent on violence and the woman who tries to stop

say that she likes orange juice. But Sue, her mother (a somewhat broadly drawn villain), doesn’t want Libby to be different. Besides, Sue has two other, older children who are quite busy and her husband has a demanding career, so she doesn’t think the family will really have time to learn how to sign. Getting Libby unlocked from her silent box will take just a bit too much work, really. In the three other films, the threat is obvious: They’re all guys with guns, driven by hate. Sue is defined by indifference,
which is almost impossible to fight. It’s like punching a wall — the wall doesn’t care, so you just end up bruising your fists. I don’t think “The Silent Child” should win the Oscar (I’m pulling for “Emmett”), but it does illustrate that, while evil and violence are very real threats, not caring about another person can do an immense amount of damage. FILM REVIEW Purists who cherish Beatrix Potter’s picture books about country critters with human traits may want to skip “Peter Rabbit,” a smarty-pants update on “The Tale of Peter Rabbit.” The hybrid of live action and animation is quite handsomely rendered and amusing, as it happens. But its creators overindulge, to the point of crassness, in cliches drawn from action movies and pop culture. In this story, directed by Will Gluck, a free-spirited artist, Bea (Rose Byrne), lives in a cottage next to Old Mr. McGregor (Sam Neill), where she has befriended a rabbit named Peter (voice of James Corden). McGregor and Peter clash because Peter likes to feast on McGregor’s produce. But when McGregor drops dead, his persnickety great-nephew, Thomas (Domhnall Gleeson), comes to fix up his home. Peter, who also gets jealous when Thomas and Bea fall in love, intends to force Thomas out. That’s when the narrative goes awry. The climactic battle, complete with nonlethal explosions and electrocutions, reveals Thomas to be a rabbithater, and Peter a destructive trickster. From there until the requisite happy ending, the story loses some of its emotional weight, if not its humor. One thing we learn: Rabbits touch foreheads to apologize.
