FLORAL FAUNA:
GREAT APE ESCAPE
MAKE AUSTIN SLIGHTLY LESS WEIRD
OMENS UPDATE

Officials said the water is safe to drink, but who would want to?!
Forget the pale horse — it’s his rider you need to worry about
Zookeepers say chimpanzees used branches to make a ladder and escape from their enclosure at the Belfast Zoo. Video filmed Saturday by visitors to the Northern Ireland zoo showed the chimps scaling a wall and perching on it, with one walking down a path outside the enclosure. Zookeeper Alyn Cairns told the BBC “they’re intelligent primates and know they’re not supposed to be out of their enclosure, so got back in themselves.” (AP)
Residents in some parts of Austin, Texas, last week reported foul-smelling water. Officials said the source was an infestation of zebra mussels inside a water treatment plant pipe that had been turned off for about two weeks. In that time, the mollusks infested the pipe in massive numbers. Afterward, a chemical normally used to control the mussel population flushed through and wiped out the colony, leaving the mussels to decay. (AP)
A suburban Minneapolis resident reported an intruder in her basement. It was a horse. Inver Grove Heights police arrived at the home late Friday to find a pale-colored horse walking through various rooms. Police Sgt. Adam Wiederhoeft said it wasn’t clear how the horse got in the house. A post on the department’s Facebook page said: “No horses or officers were hurt in this incident and the horse was safely returned to the corral!” (AP)

page three Root canal lays seeds for love Nikita the Amur tiger receives dental work before a courtship
PIZZA PROBLEM
CALLA KESSLER (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)
NATIONAL ZOO Nikita, a 308-pound Amur tiger, was blissfully gassed out on a gurney at the National Zoo. On Saturday morning, as the feline lay on her side, her tongue dangling out, some 15 zoo staffers checked her heart rate, and monitored for the slightest signs of muscle twitches and the longshot chance that she’d suddenly wake. Everyone knew the stakes. It would be bad, very bad, if Nikita woke up. The 6-year-old was getting a root canal. Then, Barron Hall, a Northern Virginia-based, board-certified animal dentist, did what no other sane human would do to a sleeping tiger. He jammed a needle into her upper-left canine tooth. Near the top. Near the gums. He kept doing this. Over and over. But this was his job — digging a hole, irrigating the tooth’s insides and restoring it. Hall, who has served as the National Zoo’s animal dentist for the past 12 years, is one of the best. And Nikita deserved the best. She’s part of the Amur tiger subspecies, an endangered population that lives

mostly near the Amur River in Siberia. As few as 360 are left, according to the National Zoo. Nikita came to Washington in November 2018 so she could commune with the National Zoo’s other Amur tiger, an 11-year-old named Pavel. The zoo’s wish is that Nikita and Pavel produce at least one litter. But before Nikita and Pavel could begin their courtship, she needed that root canal. During the procedure, Hall
explained that without medical intervention, bacteria in Nikita’s exposed tooth cavity would continue to fester, putting Nikita in endless pain. “She would suffer in silence. That’s what most animals do,” Hall said. “As long as they eat and wag their tail, people think, ‘Oh, they’re fine.’ We’re the only species that gets rewarded for whining and complaining.” Hall wasn’t even concerned about jabbing a tiger in the tooth.
“I’ve done this long enough,” he said. Finally, the drilling, the jamming, the digging was all over. Hall had cleaned her tooth out and filled it in. Cosmetically, Nikita looked brand-new. Great Cats keeper Dell Guglielmo said she’ll soon be in heat, or estrus. And she’ll be curious about her fellow tiger, Pavel. “Hopefully,” she said, “Nikita won’t ever bare her teeth at him.” IAN SHAPIRA (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Commercial is delivered a little too late A Paisano’s pizza commercial featuring (former) Wizards player Markieff Morris came together at just the wrong time. Wednesday evening, an ad agency finished the commercial, which was shot in late August and was scheduled to air twice during every Wizards game on NBC Sports Washington for the remainder of the season. Less than five hours later, the first reports emerged that Morris had been dealt to the Pelicans. The commercial will still run for a few weeks, but Morris won’t be on the court. (TWP)

Northam: ‘Not going anywhere’
THE DISTRICT
Nuclear commission: Howard broke rules Howard University violated a federal safety rule by allowing a hazardous radioactive substance to be stored in one of its laboratories without permission, according to a letter from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission dated Jan. 31. The radioactive powder was in a small jar in an unused physics lab inside a lead-shielded container clearly marked as a storage unit for radioactive materials. NRC waived what could have been a $7,000 fee because it said the university had taken “prompt and comprehensive” steps to address the problem.
RICHMOND Democratic Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam considered resigning amid a scandal that he once wore blackface, but the pediatric neurologist said Sunday that he’s “not going anywhere” because the state “needs someone that can heal” it. Northam said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” that it had been a difficult week since a racist photo in his 1984 medical school yearbook surfaced, showing a person wearing blackface next to a second person wearing a Ku Klux Klan hood and robe. Northam initially said he had appeared in the photo — although he didn’t say which costume he was wearing — and apologized. The next day, however, he denied being in the photo, while acknowledging that he had worn blackface to a dance party that same year. “Virginia needs someone that can heal. There’s no better person to do that than a doctor,” Northam said. “Virginia also needs someone who is strong, who has empathy, who has courage and who has a moral compass. And that’s why I’m not going anywhere.” Northam’s political turmoil comes as the two other top Democrats in the state face their own potentially career-ending scandals, with allegations of sexual assault against Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax — Northam’s successor

if the governor were to resign — and Attorney General Mark Herring acknowledging that he wore blackface at a party in 1980. Herring would become governor if both Northam and Fairfax resigned. The scandals have become a full-blown crisis for Virginia Democrats. Although the party has taken an almost zero-tolerance approach to misconduct among its members in this #MeToo era, a house-cleaning in Virginia could be costly: If all three Democrats resigned, Republican state House Speaker Kirk Cox would become governor. On Friday, a second allegation of sexual assault against Fairfax came to light when Meredith Watson alleged in a statement via an attorney that Fairfax raped her while they were students at Duke University in 2000. Vanessa Tyson, a California college professor, had previously accused Fairfax of forcing her to perform oral sex on him at a Boston hotel in 2004. Fairfax issued a statement Saturday denying he ever sexually assaulted anyone and making clear he does not intend to immediately step down. The lieutenant governor called on authorities, including the FBI, to conduct a full investigation. Democratic Del. Patrick Hope said he wants to introduce articles of impeachment against

JMU names dorm after enslaved servant On Friday, James Madison University in Virginia honored Paul Jennings, who spent more than half his life as an enslaved African-American servant to founding father James Madison, by naming a new student residence hall for him. Walkers and cyclists face high risks as other traffic deaths decline TRANSPORTATION The number of traffic fatalities decreased slightly in the Washington region last year — with the exception of pedestrian deaths, which shot up nearly 20 percent. Pedestrians accounted for onethird of the 290 traffic deaths in the greater Washington area last year — their largest proportion of the region’s road fatalities in more than a decade, according to data
compiled by The Washington Post. Overall, traffic deaths in 2018 were down from 2017, when 313 people were killed, and an improvement after four years of the numbers trending upward. But the rise in pedestrian deaths baffles officials. The data show 92 pedestrians were killed in 2018, up from 77 a year earlier. The Washington region mirrors a national trend. More than 37,000 people were killed in traffic crashes in the U.S. in 2017, according to the most recent data; nearly 20 percent were pedestrians or bicyclists. The proportion of

Council to call for safer streets. “There is nothing in the world that will make me feel better,” said his mother, Laura Montiel. D.C. agencies have embraced strategies in the “Vision Zero” program to push for safer roads. Montgomery County and Alexandria have similar programs. And the region through the Transportation Planning Board has set highway safety goals required by the federal government, though it has not met them. “We are absolutely as a region failing to achieve our goals,” D.C. ‘Enquirer’ lawyer denies AMI blackmailed Bezos Attorney insists threat to publish photos was journalism, not a crime

Jeff Bezos has said American Media Inc. threatened to publish explicit photos of him.

MEDIA The National Enquirer committed neither extortion nor blackmail by threatening to publish intimate photos of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, an attorney for the head of the tabloid’s parent company said Sunday. Elkan Abramowitz, an attorney for American Media Inc. chief executive David Pecker, said on Sunday that a “reliable source” well-known to Bezos and his mistress provided the story about the billionaire’s extramarital affair. Bezos has said AMI threatened to publish the explicit photos of him unless he stopped investigating how the Enquirer obtained his private exchanges with his mistress, former TV anchor Lauren Sanchez, and publicly declared that the Enquirer’s coverage of him was not politically motivated. Bezos also owns The Washington Post and Express. Bezos’ investigators have suggested the Enquirer’s coverage of his affair was driven by dirty politics, and the high-profile clash has pitted the world’s richest man against the leader of America’s best-known tabloid, who is a strong backer of President Trump. Trump has been highly critical of Bezos over his ownership of The Post and

Amazon, and The Post’s coverage of the White House. Federal prosecutors are looking into whether the Enquirer violated a cooperation and nonprosecution agreement that recently spared the gossip sheet from charges for paying hush money to a Playboy model who claimed she had an affair with Trump, two people familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Friday. The people weren’t authorized to discuss the matter and spoke on condition of anonymity. But asked during an interview with ABC’s “This Week” whether he was concerned the Bezos matter could jeopardize the noncooperation agreement, Abramowitz
said: “Absolutely not.” He doubled down on the company’s assertion of innocence. “It’s absolutely not a crime to ask somebody to simply tell the truth,” he said. “Tell the truth that this was not politically motivated, and we will print no more stories.” Abramowitz insisted what AMI was doing was journalism, not extortion. “This Week” host George Stephanopoulos pressed him on that point. “How is that journalism, though?” he asked. “If you believe the photos are newsworthy, how is it journalism to say we’re not going to publish this if you give us something we want?” MICHAEL BALSAMO (AP)

The simple wool dress with a zippered turtleneck front will be up for bidding starting on March 30, KruseGWS Auctions announced Wednesday. The auction house expects the dress will fetch between $100,000 and $150,000. Monroe and DiMaggio married in January 1954. She cited mental cruelty as the reason for the divorce. (AP)
SHOT IN A PILL
A swallowable injection?
Scientists have figured out how to hide a shot inside a peasized pill — creating a swallowable gadget that can inject medicines like insulin from inside the stomach. The new invention, reported Thursday by a Massachusetts Institute of Technology-led team, has been tested only in animals so far. Patients usually prefer oral treatment, but many compounds, including insulin for diabetes, can’t survive the harsh trip through the digestive system. If it pans out, the pill might offer a workaround to make not just insulin but a variety of usually injected medicines a little easier to take. Shutdown negotiations falter With deadline looming, talks break down over immigration dispute
U.S., S. Korea reach military spending deal
ANDREW HARNIK (AP)
IMMIGRATION The nation faces the real possibility of another government shutdown at the end of this week, after bipartisan talks aimed at averting that outcome broke down in a dispute over immigration enforcement, lawmakers and aides said Sunday. President Trump’s border wall demands, which precipitated the record-long 35-day shutdown that ended last month, were a secondary issue in the impasse that developed over the weekend, according to officials. Instead, after looking promising for days, the delicate negotiations collapsed over Democrats’ insistence on limiting the number of unauthorized immigrants who can be detained by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. The breakdown in talks made it unlikely that lawmakers will be able to finalize an agreement today, as they’d hope to do so it could pass the House and Senate before Friday night’s deadline. “I think the talks are stalled right now,” Senate Appropriations Chairman Richard C. Shelby, Ala., the lead Republican negotiator, said on Fox News Sunday. “I’m not confident we’re going to get there.” The stalemate left the path forward to keeping the government open unclear. There were

some behind-the-scenes efforts late Sunday to salvage the talks, but it was uncertain if they would be successful. The Homeland Security Department along with State, Agriculture, Commerce and a number of other federal agencies are currently operating on a stopgap spending bill that Trump signed Jan. 25. There’s little appetite for another short-term funding extension, but without some action by midnight on Feb. 15, those agencies will run out of money and begin to shut down again. Another funding lapse could impact many Americans within days, because one of the agencies that would go unfunded during the shutdown is the Internal Revenue Service, which
Internal negotiations Lawmakers negotiating a shutdown deal had been trading offers over how much money could go to barriers along the U.S.-Mexico border, and were looking at between $1.3 billion and $2 billion — far short of the $5.7 billion President Trump had demanded. Democrats had also been focused on limiting the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency’s ability to detain unauthorized immigrants. The Democrats’ proposal included a new limit on detention beds for immigrants picked up not at the border, but in the interior of the country. Democrats wanted to cap that number at 16,500, which they said is on par with the final years of the Obama administration. (TWP)
is processing tax returns for millions of people. During the shutdown that began in December, thousands of IRS officials refused to show up for work without pay, backlogging the filing process. President Trump, who is holding a rally in El Paso, Texas, tonight that’s likely to focus on border security, referenced the disagreement in tweets on Sunday. “I don’t think the Dems on the Border Committee are being allowed by their leaders to make a deal. They are offering very little money for the desperately needed Border Wall & now, out of the blue, want a cap on convicted violent felons to be held in detention!” he wrote. SEOUL South Korea and the United States struck a new deal Sunday that increases Seoul’s contribution for the cost of the American military presence on its soil, overcoming previous failed negotiations that caused worries about their decades-long alliance. The development comes as President Trump is set to hold his second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Vietnam in late February. South Korea last year provided about $830 million, covering roughly 40 percent of the cost of the deployment of 28,500 U.S. soldiers whose presence is meant to deter aggression from North Korea. Trump has pushed for South Korea to pay more. On Sunday, chief negotiators from the two countries signed a new plan, which requires South Korea to pay about $924 million in 2019, Seoul’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement. The statement said the two countries reaffirmed the need for a “stable” U.S. military deployment amid the “rapidly changing situation on the Korean Peninsula.” The ministry said the U.S. assured South Korea that it is committed to the alliance and has no plans to adjust the number of its troops in South Korea. The deal, which involves the spending of South Korean taxpayer money, requires parliamentary approval in South Korea, but not in the United States, according to Seoul’s Foreign Ministry. Buying low, selling high ‘Retail arbitrage’ trend has people acting as ‘flesh-and-blood robots for Amazon’
Juston and Kristen Herbert left their jobs in finance and turned to retail arbitrage, the practice of buying and reselling items in bulk, full time.
DOMINIC VALENTE PHOTOS (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)
BUSINESS With their two young kids in tow, Juston and Kristen Herbert drove to a Target near their home outside Scottsdale, Ariz. It was time to get to work. The Herberts were on the hunt for all of the Contigo water bottles the store had in stock, and kept the camera rolling for their 6,400 YouTube subscribers. Within minutes, an employee pulled out 32 two-packs — sold on clearance for $5 each — from a back storage room. For two people who recently left their jobs in finance, the blue-andblack plastic bottles might as well have been made of gold. The Herberts would resell the two-packs on Amazon for $19.95. Subtracting some taxes and fees, they’d clear $6.16 in profit. All told, the Herbert’s 10-minute Target run earned them $198. Juston, 30, and Kristen, 28, estimate they can reel in $150,000 this year from their newest gig: retail arbitrage. The basic idea is to buy up a bunch of the same item and then resell them online for a handsome profit. For some, this is just a lucrative side hustle. For others, it has become their primary way of earning a living. While the idea to buy something cheap and sell it at a higher price is age-old, the concept of retail arbitrage has emerged in the digital age. Chris Green wrote one of the go-to how-to books on the topic, titled “Retail Arbitrage.” And he’s helped popularize the moniker. The term seems to be having a moment. In December, according to Google Trends, searches for “retail arbitrage” spiked on YouTube, where aficionados post videos of their shopping and reselling sprees. In the early 2000s, resellers

started flipping products on eBay. But Green’s guide focused on the engine behind many of these small businesses: Fulfillment By Amazon, or FBA. Through FBA, people can add their own products to Amazon’s vast online catalogue for varying fees. Sellers package their products and ship them to Amazon
warehouses, where they are stored until an order comes in. Green, who’s been dubbed the “godfather of retail arbitrage,” used to be a sales representative for Bosch Power Tools. He started reselling power tools on eBay in the early 2000s. Then, with the rise of Android and iPhone apps that can scan

products and track down major sales, Green realized retail arbitrage could work for anyone. For Mike “Reezy Resells” Rezendes, retail arbitrage has been a kind of salvation. Rezendes said he grew up in a troubled household and was married with a child by 16. As a teenager, he noticed commercials for eBay on TV and started selling what he could rummage around the house, like his Nintendo and its games and controllers. Now, Rezendes, 34, has been reselling items online full-time for 14 years. His YouTube channel, “Reezy Resells,” has more than 85,000 subscribers. He runs his company with his best friend and oversees a small team who buy up goods from stores like Nike, Marshalls and Ross. Last year, the company saw $800,000 in gross sales for about $240,000 in profit. In January, he got more than $8,000 in ad revenue from YouTube. Rezendes, who lives in Santa Cruz, Calif., said retail arbitrage has kept him from having to work a 9-to-5 desk job. But he also knows online resellers and small-business owners like him are crucial to Amazon’s model. Amazon “needs people like me to fill all the holes in the marketplace,” he said. “We’re literally flesh-andblood robots for Amazon,” Rezendes said. The retail giant hasn’t shied away from promoting its small businesses: In 2018, the number of small and medium-size businesses that passed $1 million in sales in Amazon stores worldwide grew by 20 percent. Third-party sales are growing at a faster rate than firstparty sales online, the company said last month. RACHEL SIEGEL (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Turkey decries treatment of China’s Uighurs ISTANBUL Turkey has called China’s treatment of its minority Uighurs “a great cause of shame for humanity.” In a statement Saturday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy said it’s “no longer a secret” that China has arbitrarily detained more than 1 million Uighurs in “concentration camps.” He said the Turkic Muslim population faced pressure and “systematic assimilation” in western China. The minister said Turkey had also learned of the death in prison of famed Uighur musician and poet Abdurehim Heyit, who had been sentenced to eight years over one of his songs. Heyit was a master of the dutar, a type of two-stringed instrument with a long neck that is found in Iran and throughout Central Asia. His detention was considered indicative of China’s determination to crack down on Uighur intellectuals and cultural figures in what some say is an effort to eradicate a separate Uighur language and identity. Heyit’s death could not be independently confirmed. The Chinese Embassy in Ankara called Aksoy’s comments “completely unacceptable” in a lengthy response posted on its website that defended its policies in the northwestern region of Xinjiang, the Uighur homeland. Beijing has intensified a security clampdown on Uighurs that was put in place after a bloody 2009 riot. (AP)

What shooting flaw?
Evgeny Kuznetsov celebrates his gamewinning goal in OT on Thursday against the Avalanche.
Center of faceoff woes Of the 100 centers who have taken the most faceoffs in the NHL this season, Evgeny Kuznetsov’s 38.8 percent success rate ranks dead last — a big reason the Capitals are the league’s worst team on draws. Shrugging that off, he said: “I always believe if we lost the faceoff, we get puck back in two seconds.” (TWP)
After he started the season with seven points in the first four games, Kuznetsov was asked if winning the Hart Trophy, the NHL’s MVP award, was a goal. “I don’t give a [expletive] about that,” he said in October. “To be MVP, you have to work hard
365 [days] in a year, but I’m not ready for that.” Asked about that edict on Sunday, Kuznetsov explained that, in his opinion, being the best player in the league would require him to score so much that he would feel “selfish.” There’s a lot to love about Kuznetsov when he’s playing like he has recently, and the more often the Capitals see that gleeful bird flapping his wings, the better their chances of repeating as champions. Defenseman Matt Niskanen said: “He’s such a unique player that when he’s really going, when he’s on, it changes the whole game.” ISABELLE KHURSHUDYAN
Duke is unbeatable when it hits 3s. The Blue Devils, who rank 316th out of 351 NCAA teams in 3-point shooting, went 13-for-21 (61.9 percent) from long range Saturday.
2 A different pace Virginia could be exposed if it gets down and feels forced to abandon its methodical pace. The Cavaliers allow an NCAAlow 52.9 points per game this season, but Duke averaged 76.5 points against them.
1 Reddish is on a roll Cam Reddish has overcome early-season shooting woes and has made 13 of 29 shots from 3-point range over his past three games to emerge as Duke’s third reliable scorer.

The number of consecutive triple-doubles for Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook after he had 21 points, 11 assists and 12 rebounds in Saturday night’s 117-112 win over the Rockets to match the NBA record streak set by Wilt Chamberlain in 1968. Westbrook, who has 22 triple-doubles this season and 126 overall, can set the record for the longest streak of games with a triple-double tonight when Oklahoma City hosts the Portland Trail Blazers. Saturday: 29 minutes, 4-for-11, 10 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists
What’s new? Gone was the player whom the Wizards chastised for not shooting enough. By the end of the first quarter, Porter had launched more shot attempts (five) than any Wizards player, including two-time All-Star Bradley Beal (four).
What’s new? Shortly after Boylen was named coach in December, Parker, who started 17 games this season, was completely out of the rotation. Saturday was the first time since Dec. 1 he played 30 minutes.
What’s new? He already has as many 30-point games with the Wizards this season as he did with the Bulls after racking up 30 points on 12-for-18 shooting in his Wizards debut Friday against Cleveland.
What he said: “It was a total 180, definitely,” Parker said about Boylen. “… Just to see that relationship go sour, not from my end but from his end, was just bad. Because you trust the guy.”
What he said: “I was hurt the last 48 hours,” said Portis, who hasn’t been shy in voicing his opinion about the trade on social media. “But when I got to the game [Friday], those hurt emotions went away.”
What coach said: “He’s a playmaker,” Wizards coach Scott Brooks said. “We’re lucky to have him. … We’ve been watching film on him and we feel like this is his best way to contribute to our team, being like a point forward.”
What coach said: “He was a great pickup, and that’s an understatement,” Brooks said Friday. “He plays hard. He reads the game; the [18] shots, I can’t think of one that was like, ‘Ugh, he should have passed it.’ And he’s 23.”
What he said: “Yeah, I was telling Coach everything there was to know about Washington,” Porter said when asked about his first video session breaking down the Wizards. “Everything. I was snitching.” What the coach said: “His [leadership] approach already is respected,” Bulls coach Jim Boylen said. “When you have a guy in his second film session repeating what the coach is saying … it’s powerful.”
“I guess God is telling me something: ‘Sit down and get yourself fully healthy.’ … If something is nagging or not broken, I want to play. And I guess it kind of caught up to me.” JOHN WALL, calling his ruptured
Achilles tendon a “minor setback.” The Wizards point guard, who is expected to be out for 11 to 15 months, was in good spirits this weekend as he prepared for surgery, which is scheduled for Tuesday.

the Stanley Cup last postseason, but he wasn’t near playing at his full potential for the two months before Washington’s recent bye week. Now that he’s gotten back to the version of himself that can change the game anytime the puck is on his stick, the Capitals want to see him maintain that level of play. “How hard he wants to compete out there dictates [his play],” general manager Brian MacLellan said last month. “He could be one of the best players in the league, if he chose to be.” Asked again about Kuznetsov’s play on Monday, MacLellan was just as blunt. “I think for our organization, for our team to do well, we need him at the top of his game,” he said. “Depending on how you look at it, it was one or two — [captain Alex Ovechkin] and him for MVP last year in the playoffs. That’s why we did well, because Kuznetsov played well. I think if he’s not going to play at that level, we’re not going to do as well. He’s that important to our team.”

Washington’s GM: For our team to do well, we need Kuznetsov at the top of his game ANALYSIS The bird was back this week, flapping his wings in his trademark celebration after a gamewinning breakaway in overtime. It was center Evgeny Kuznetsov at his bewildering best, and it was a welcome sight for the Capitals. As the team has earned seven out of a possible 10 points so far on this six-game homestand, Kuznetsov has been the Capitals’ best player, reinforcing that as he goes so do they. Washington has started to steadily build its game back up after finishing January with a seven-game losing skid, and it’s no coincidence that it’s been with Kuznetsov scoring four goals — including the overtime breakaway goal against the Avalanche that prompted Kuznetsov’s birdlike postscript — with four assists over the past five games. Vonn medals in final race of storied career SKIING Five days after crashing in super-G and three months after tearing a ligament in her left knee, Lindsey Vonn won the bronze medal in the world championship downhill in Are, Sweden, on Sunday in the final race of her career. “I’m literally tapped out, I can’t cry anymore,” said Vonn, who no longer has any cartilage in her knees. “ … It’s not an easy thing to feel your bones hitting together and continue to push through it.” The record-setting American skier had been planning on retiring in December but she recently moved up her plans due to persistent pain in both of her surgically repaired knees. As soon as she exited the finish area Sunday, Vonn embraced Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark, the only skier to win more World Cup races than she did — 86 to 82. “I basically begged him to come here via text, in all caps, many exclamation points,” Vonn said. “… I was just so grateful that he was there. Honestly, it’s a perfect ending to my career.” Vonn, 34, became the first female skier to win medals at six different world championships and eclipsed her own record from two years ago for oldest woman to win a medal at a worlds. “The nice thing is that, in the real world I’m actually pretty young,” Vonn said. “I have felt really old for a long time, because I’m racing with girls that are like 15 years younger than me. … I’ve got a lot to look forward to.” ANDREW DAMPF AND STEVE DOUGLAS (AP)

The campus visit is just as important for graduate students as for undergraduates, higher education experts say.
CAMPUS LIFE
Get the grand tour Take a look around your graduate school campus the smart way GRADUATE SCHOOL For many high school students, college tours are a rite of passage, a necessary step in the undergraduate application process where they can check out dorm rooms, dining halls and the social scenes (along with academic offerings, of course) at the schools where they might apply. Prospective graduate students often don’t place the same importance on the campus visit — and that can be a mistake. “I think the campus visit is underrated for graduate students,” says Eric Allen, founder and president of admissions consulting firm Admit Advantage. “And, to be honest, I think the visit for undergraduates is probably a little overrated. Most 17-year-olds don’t know what they want to do, but graduate
school is really about a fit for your career future.” Graduate school is a major investment of time and money, and a campus visit can go a long way in helping prospective students find the right schools and programs for their career objectives. Here are six tips for making the most of a graduate school campus visit.
Know the best time to visit This can vary from university to university and even from program to program. Sometimes students are invited for preview sessions before they apply. In other cases, a program might invite accepted students for a weekend to showcase what the program offers (and help convince them to accept their admissions offer). And in some instances an interview is part of the admissions process. So it’s important to understand what’s involved in the programs on your list.
“Most 17-yearolds don’t know what they want to do, but graduate school is really about a fit for your career future.” ERIC ALLEN, admissions consultant, on why campus visits are especially important for graduate students
A visit when school is in session and the students are going about their usual business is always best for giving applicants a true sense of what a graduate program entails. But for working professionals, that isn’t always easy. “People always ask me, ‘If I can only go on a Saturday, should I go at all?’ And I think the answer is yes,” says D.C.based educational consultant and
admissions strategist Steven Roy Goodman. “Is that better than not going at all? Yes.”
Lay the groundwork After you’ve done your initial research on potential graduate schools and programs, reach out to the admissions office to find out dates for information sessions or to start planning a visit of your own. They can help connect you with on-campus resources and answer questions about the admissions process. And building up a favorable relationship with admissions staff along the way can sometimes prove helpful for applicants who may be more borderline candidates for a program.
Talk with current students They’re in the program now, so they’re your best source on the faculty and the amount of work you should expect to have. “You can get the standard marketing CONTINUED ON PAGE 18

Students miss out on food aid, GAO says A federal report released last month urged officials to help more students get access to government food assistance. The Government Accountability Office found nearly 2 million students from lowincome backgrounds who were potentially eligible for the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in 2016 but did not receive the benefits. At nine of 14 colleges the GAO contacted, some officials and students said they were unfamiliar with or didn’t understand the program. Eligible students include parents with young children, participants in federal work-study programs, recipients of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and students who work at least 20 hours a week. In more than two dozen studies of student access to food, the GAO found that food insecurity rates ranged from 9 percent to more than 50 percent. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

lines on the website or in the brochure,” says Jeffrey Franke, assistant dean of the Graduate School at the University of Maryland. “But really talking with the current students will give you a true understanding.” Ask about professors’ teaching styles, how much time students spend each week on their classes (especially important for folks who will be going to grad school part time while continuing to work) and if anything about the program surprised them. “Don’t pretend you already know everything,” says Kevin Connor, admissions counselor for graduate programs at the George Mason University School of Business. “And ask questions
that are unique to you, not just questions you looked up online.”
Meet with career services What better way to get a sense of what’s possible after completing your graduate degree? “You can find out where people from that program are actually matriculating to afterwards,” says Allen. Students should know exactly what they want to get out of a graduate degree as they’re looking at programs. Do they want to use it to climb the corporate ladder, or do they want to focus on research or perhaps become a professor themselves? Understanding their end game is vital as they’re assessing programs; getting information from career services can help them determine if a program matches their goals.
“Don’t pretend you already know everything. And ask questions that are unique to you, not just questions you looked up online.” KEVIN CONNOR, of George Mason University, on the questions to ask on a campus visit
Respect faculty members’ time Meeting with faculty during a campus visit is typically more important at the doctorate level than the master’s level. “You
Study with Purpose The Johns Hopkins School of Advanced
International Studies (SAIS) is for candidates who seek a deeper understanding of how politics, economics, and international
need to define the faculty you want to work with,” Franke says. “And since you’ll be spending five to 11 years in that department, you want to make sure that you understand what you’re walking into.” Professors are busy people, so if you do set up a meeting, come prepared with questions or topics to discuss. Look through their university and LinkedIn pages to get familiar with work they’ve done. If this meeting takes place while your application is still being considered, take it seriously. “Don’t be naive and think it’s not part of the admissions process, because it is,” says Allen. “This is an opportunity to impress — or for someone to say that you’re not someone they’d want in their program.” This is especially true for small Ph.D. programs where
the professor could be part of the team that reviews applications.
Use what you learn wisely A successful campus visit provides valuable insight on whether a program is the right fit. You should leave a visit with an understanding of a program’s values and culture, and whether they align with yours. “A lot of people have a vision of what a business school or law school or master’s program is like,” Goodman says. “But it’s important to test whether or not you really want to go to that kind of graduate school. The value of a visit is not only to improve your chances of being admitted, but to also make sure this investment ... is something that makes sense in your life trajectory.” BETH LUBERECKI (FOR EXPRESS)

MUST-SEE THIS WEEK
1 ‘The Umbrella Academy’ Friday on Netflix
Based on the comic book co-created by Gerard Way, the series follows a family of misfit superheroes who set out to save the world. The ensemble cast includes Ellen Page and Mary J. Blige.
HULU
2 Maya Erskine, left, and Anna Konkle, the co-creators and stars of “PEN15,” get more than their fill of middle school hormones in the Hulu comedy series.
Arrested development Comics Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle revisit adolescence with the series ‘PEN15’
STREAMING Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle took turns describing the experience of filming an outlandish scene from their new Hulu series, “PEN15,” in which Konkle’s character tries to rip an unexpectedly stretchy thong off Erskine. “I’m ripping it off but it’s going, like, 5 feet in the air,” Konkle explains. Erskine recalls the pain this caused her, using some choice profanity, before adding that Konkle “just kept going until it ripped. Anna and I would be dying laughing.” Given how effervescent the real-life best friends are,
especially together, it’s hard to imagine a situation in which they wouldn’t be the life of the party. But a familiar feeling of uneasiness still swept over them when they began socializing in Los Angeles soon after graduating from New York University, where they had met. “You instantly revert to those feelings,” Erskine says. “You never really leave that age.” Instead of wallowing, Erskine and Konkle channeled the feelings into their work. With their friend Sam Zvibleman, they explored the idea of revisiting middle school through a TV show set in 2000. And who better to
Misery loves company
“PEN15” has a lot in common with other recent film and TV fare. The Hulu series employs the same sort of juvenile humor as Netflix’s “Big Mouth” — its title suggests as much — by poking fun at the pubescent worries behind kids’ jokes. It also evokes the same painful recognition in viewers as Bo Burnham’s recent feature debut, “Eighth Grade.” S.R.
play young Maya and Anna than Maya and Anna? Leaning on that unorthodox idea of adult women playing middle schoolers, “PEN15” came to fruition, with the 10-episode first season premiering this past Friday. “To see an actual middle
schooler going through the traumatic experience is probably going to be dramatic,” Erskine says. “But if you’re seeing it through the eyes of adults and there’s enough distance for the viewer to place these characters, there’s room for it to be funny.” There’s a charming innocence to how Maya and Anna handle their shared experiences, traumatizing or otherwise. Despite their hormones occasionally pulling them in different directions, Maya and Anna always find their way back to each other. “That maybe is the optimism of the story, even though it’s dark and sad at times,” Konkle says. “These two loners have each other, and they are able to survive because of that.”
‘Lorena’ Friday on Amazon Prime
Jordan Peele is an executive producer on this four-part docuseries that explores the case of Lorena and John Bobbitt, a scandal that dominated tabloids in 1993 and remains resonant today amid the #MeToo climate.
3 ‘Miracle Workers’ 10:30 p.m. Tuesday on TBS
Heaven is comically reimagined as a hive of office drones in this limited series, which stars Daniel Radcliffe as an angel who intervenes when God (Steve Buscemi) decides to destroy his creation. (EXPRESS)

The new CBS reality competition “The World’s Best” calls upon the talents of, from left, RuPaul, Faith Hill, James Corden and Drew Barrymore.
MARC SILVER | BROADCAST MUSE
The globe’s got talent: ‘World’s Best’ looks far and wide for stars I don’t think you will see anything quite as amazing on TV this year as the Mongolian singer Enkh Erdene, who says he does not speak English, crooning the country song “Amarillo by Morning” with just the right touch of drawl and grit. The self-dubbed “Mongolian Cowboy” made his first trip to the U.S. to appear on the new CBS series “The World’s Best,” which launched after the Super Bowl to an audience of more than 22 million and now airs at 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. Sure, it’s just another TV talent show with a $1 million prize for the winner. But what makes the show special is its planetary sweep. At a time when people say mean things about other cultures and countries, “The World’s Best” is a glorious celebration of the gifts of global citizens — Americans, to be sure, but also a singer from Kazakhstan who boasts of a six-octave range,
and two Chinese acrobats who can balance and hop on one arm. And, of course, a singing nun from Italy who performs Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.” Despite its global thrust, the show does put America first. The three main judges are actor Drew Barrymore, singer Faith Hill and RuPaul, the host of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” They assign up to 50 points per contestant. Behind them is what the show calls its “wall of the world” — rows of seats populated by the likes of Nigerian film star Kate Henshaw and K-pop producer Alex Wright. It’s great to get voices rarely, if ever, heard on U.S. TV. But each of them can only award 1 point. James Corden of “The Late Late Show” is the charming host. But RuPaul is the show’s secret weapon. His irreverence adds a welcome edge. After the nun’s solo, RuPaul slyly notes, “The church is really progressive now!”

trending “I’m still in shock that Disney Channel actually used the word gay. Cyrus Goodman said, ‘I’m gay.’ This is so beautiful and important and we need more of it.” @AMBERSMACK, praising the show “Andi Mack” for becoming the first-ever Disney Channel series to feature an openly gay character. Though character Cyrus Goodman, played by Joshua Rush, came out in an episode last year, he’d never explicitly said the words “I’m gay” until Friday’s episode. The scene was praised for normalizing an LGBT character in a kids’ show.

@NERDABOUTTOWN, writer Stephanie Yeboah, expanding on her story of how a man dated her for a few weeks just to get money on a dare from his friends for wooing a plus-sized woman. Yeboah detailed the struggles of dating as a plus-sized woman, leading to a larger Twitter debate on “weight privilege” and how thinner women generally have an easier time dating. Women of all body types called for societal acceptance of people of different sizes.

“Netflix, PLEASE give Halsey a paint-while-you-sing show. Look at what she did tonight on ‘SNL.’” @ITSDIAMONDJOE, praising the singer for her performance on “Saturday Night Live.” While singing “Eastside,” her song with benny blanco and Khalid, Halsey simultaneously painted a portrait on a large white canvas. The artist earned praise for both her creative take on the performance and for pulling double duty as the show’s host.

strategy for killing the murderous doll Chucky, after the first trailer for the “Child’s Play” reboot dropped Friday. Some Twitter users agreed that kicking was the best idea. Others said Chucky’s human-like strength makes him hard to defeat.
“5 conserves the most energy, therefore making it the most efficient for a bread that has evolved, much like this one has.” @CHRONIKOSHAT, making a case for how a baguette would move, a question first posed by @sheepfilms on Thursday. @sheepfilms made animations of eight different options, including a snakelike slither, flipping end over end, an inchworm-like motion and hopping on one end. The fifth option sees the loaf rolling lengthwise like a rolling pin.
