Residents in some parts of Austin, Texas, last week reported foul-smelling water. Officials said the source was an infestation of zebra mussels inside a water treatment plant pipe that had been turned off for about two weeks. In that time, the mollusks infested the pipe in massive numbers.

Afterward, a chemical normally used to control the mussel population flushed through and wiped out the colony, leaving the mussels to decay. (AP)

A suburban Minneapolis resident reported an intruder in her basement. It was a horse. Inver Grove Heights police arrived at the home late Friday to find a pale-colored horse walking through various rooms. Police Sgt. Adam Wiederhoeft said it wasn’t clear how the horse got in the house. A post on the department’s Facebook page said: “No horses or officers were hurt in this incident and the horse was safely returned to the corral!” (AP)

NATIONAL ZOO Nikita, a 308-pound Amur tiger, was blissfully gassed out on a gurney at the National Zoo. On Saturday morning, as the feline lay on her side, her tongue dangling out, some 15 zoo staffers checked her heart rate, and monitored for the slightest signs of muscle twitches and the longshot chance that she’d suddenly wake. Everyone knew the stakes.

It would be bad, very bad, if Nikita woke up. The 6-year-old was getting a root canal.

Then, Barron Hall, a Northern Virginia-based, board-certified animal dentist, did what no other sane human would do to a sleeping tiger. He jammed a needle into her upper-left canine tooth.

Near the top. Near the gums. He kept doing this. Over and over.

But this was his job — digging a hole, irrigating the tooth’s insides and restoring it. Hall, who has served as the National Zoo’s animal dentist for the past 12 years, is one of the best. And Nikita deserved the best. She’s part of the Amur tiger subspecies, an endangered population that lives

mostly near the Amur River in Siberia. As few as 360 are left, according to the National Zoo. Nikita came to Washington in November 2018 so she could commune with the National Zoo’s other Amur tiger, an 11-year-old named Pavel. The zoo’s wish is that Nikita and Pavel produce at least one litter.

But before Nikita and Pavel could begin their courtship, she needed that root canal.

During the procedure, Hall

explained that without medical intervention, bacteria in Nikita’s exposed tooth cavity would continue to fester, putting Nikita in endless pain. “She would suffer in silence. That’s what most animals do,” Hall said. “As long as they eat and wag their tail, people think, ‘Oh, they’re fine.’ We’re the only species that gets rewarded for whining and complaining.”

Hall wasn’t even concerned about jabbing a tiger in the tooth.

“I’ve done this long enough,” he said.

Finally, the drilling, the jamming, the digging was all over.

Hall had cleaned her tooth out and filled it in. Cosmetically, Nikita looked brand-new.

Great Cats keeper Dell Guglielmo said she’ll soon be in heat, or estrus. And she’ll be curious about her fellow tiger, Pavel.

“Hopefully,” she said, “Nikita won’t ever bare her teeth at him.”

Northam: ‘Not going anywhere’

Nuclear commission: Howard broke rules Howard University violated a federal safety rule by allowing a hazardous radioactive substance to be stored in one of its laboratories without permission, according to a letter from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission dated Jan. 31. The radioactive powder was in a small jar in an unused physics lab inside a lead-shielded container clearly marked as a storage unit for radioactive materials. NRC waived what could have been a $7,000 fee because it said the university had taken “prompt and comprehensive” steps to address the problem.

RICHMOND Democratic Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam considered resigning amid a scandal that he once wore blackface, but the pediatric neurologist said Sunday that he’s “not going anywhere” because the state “needs someone that can heal” it.

Northam said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” that it had been a difficult week since a racist photo in his 1984 medical school yearbook surfaced, showing a person wearing blackface next to a second person wearing a Ku Klux Klan hood and robe. Northam initially said he had appeared in the photo — although he didn’t say which costume he was wearing — and apologized. The next day, however, he denied being in the photo, while acknowledging that he had worn blackface to a dance party that same year.

“Virginia needs someone that can heal. There’s no better person to do that than a doctor,” Northam said. “Virginia also needs someone who is strong, who has empathy, who has courage and who has a moral compass. And that’s why I’m not going anywhere.”

Northam’s political turmoil comes as the two other top Democrats in the state face their own potentially career-ending scandals, with allegations of sexual assault against Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax — Northam’s successor

if the governor were to resign — and Attorney General Mark Herring acknowledging that he wore blackface at a party in 1980. Herring would become governor if both Northam and Fairfax resigned.

The scandals have become a full-blown crisis for Virginia Democrats. Although the party has taken an almost zero-tolerance approach to misconduct among its members in this #MeToo era, a house-cleaning in Virginia could be costly: If all three Democrats resigned, Republican state House Speaker Kirk Cox would become governor.

On Friday, a second allegation of sexual assault against Fairfax came to light when Meredith Watson alleged in a statement via an attorney that Fairfax raped her while they were students at Duke University in 2000.

Vanessa Tyson, a California college professor, had previously accused Fairfax of forcing her to perform oral sex on him at a Boston hotel in 2004.

Fairfax issued a statement Saturday denying he ever sexually assaulted anyone and making clear he does not intend to immediately step down. The lieutenant governor called on authorities, including the FBI, to conduct a full investigation.

Walkers and cyclists face high risks as other traffic deaths decline TRANSPORTATION The number of traffic fatalities decreased slightly in the Washington region last year — with the exception of pedestrian deaths, which shot up nearly 20 percent.

Pedestrians accounted for onethird of the 290 traffic deaths in the greater Washington area last year — their largest proportion of the region’s road fatalities in more than a decade, according to data

compiled by The Washington Post.

Overall, traffic deaths in 2018 were down from 2017, when 313 people were killed, and an improvement after four years of the numbers trending upward.

But the rise in pedestrian deaths baffles officials. The data show 92 pedestrians were killed in 2018, up from 77 a year earlier.

The Washington region mirrors a national trend. More than 37,000 people were killed in traffic crashes in the U.S. in 2017, according to the most recent data; nearly 20 percent were pedestrians or bicyclists. The proportion of

Montgomery County and Alexandria have similar programs. And the region through the Transportation Planning Board has set highway safety goals required by the federal government, though it has not met them. “We are absolutely as a region failing to achieve our goals,” D.C. MEDIA The National Enquirer committed neither extortion nor blackmail by threatening to publish intimate photos of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, an attorney for the head of the tabloid’s parent company said Sunday.

Elkan Abramowitz, an attorney for American Media Inc. chief executive David Pecker, said on Sunday that a “reliable source” well-known to Bezos and his mistress provided the story about the billionaire’s extramarital affair.

Bezos has said AMI threatened to publish the explicit photos of him unless he stopped investigating how the Enquirer obtained his private exchanges with his mistress, former TV anchor Lauren Sanchez, and publicly declared that the Enquirer’s coverage of him was not politically motivated.

Bezos also owns The Washington Post and Express.

Bezos’ investigators have suggested the Enquirer’s coverage of his affair was driven by dirty politics, and the high-profile clash has pitted the world’s richest man against the leader of America’s best-known tabloid, who is a strong backer of President Trump. Trump has been highly critical of Bezos over his ownership of The Post and

Federal prosecutors are looking into whether the Enquirer violated a cooperation and nonprosecution agreement that recently spared the gossip sheet from charges for paying hush money to a Playboy model who claimed she had an affair with Trump, two people familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Friday. The people weren’t authorized to discuss the matter and spoke on condition of anonymity.

But asked during an interview with ABC’s “This Week” whether he was concerned the Bezos matter could jeopardize the noncooperation agreement, Abramowitz

said: “Absolutely not.” He doubled down on the company’s assertion of innocence.

“It’s absolutely not a crime to ask somebody to simply tell the truth,” he said. “Tell the truth that this was not politically motivated, and we will print no more stories.”

Abramowitz insisted what AMI was doing was journalism, not extortion. “This Week” host George Stephanopoulos pressed him on that point.

“How is that journalism, though?” he asked. “If you believe the photos are newsworthy, how is it journalism to say we’re not going to publish this if you give us something we want?”

Scientists have figured out how to hide a shot inside a peasized pill — creating a swallowable gadget that can inject medicines like insulin from inside the stomach.

The new invention, reported Thursday by a Massachusetts Institute of Technology-led team, has been tested only in animals so far. Patients usually prefer oral treatment, but many compounds, including insulin for diabetes, can’t survive the harsh trip through the digestive system. If it pans out, the pill might offer a workaround to make not just insulin but a variety of usually injected medicines a little easier to take. McArthur was accused of killing and dismembering eight men he met in Toronto’s Gay Village between 2010 and 2017, hiding seven of the corpses in planters and the eighth in a ravine. He pleaded guilty last month. (TWP)

Shutdown negotiations falter With deadline looming, talks break down over immigration dispute

IMMIGRATION The nation faces the real possibility of another government shutdown at the end of this week, after bipartisan talks aimed at averting that outcome broke down in a dispute over immigration enforcement, lawmakers and aides said Sunday.

President Trump’s border wall demands, which precipitated the record-long 35-day shutdown that ended last month, were a secondary issue in the impasse that developed over the weekend, according to officials.

Instead, after looking promising for days, the delicate negotiations collapsed over Democrats’ insistence on limiting the number of unauthorized immigrants who can be detained by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. The breakdown in talks made it unlikely that lawmakers will be able to finalize an agreement today, as they’d hope to do so it could pass the House and Senate before Friday night’s deadline.

“I think the talks are stalled right now,” Senate Appropriations Chairman Richard C. Shelby, Ala., the lead Republican negotiator, said on Fox News Sunday. “I’m not confident we’re going to get there.”

There’s little appetite for another short-term funding extension, but without some action by midnight on Feb. 15, those agencies will run out of money and begin to shut down again.

SEOUL South Korea and the United States struck a new deal Sunday that increases Seoul’s contribution for the cost of the American military presence on its soil, overcoming previous failed negotiations that caused worries about their decades-long alliance.

The development comes as President Trump is set to hold his second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Vietnam in late February.

South Korea last year provided about $830 million, covering roughly 40 percent of the cost of the deployment of 28,500 U.S. soldiers whose presence is meant to deter aggression from North Korea. Trump has pushed for South Korea to pay more.

On Sunday, chief negotiators from the two countries signed a new plan, which requires South Korea to pay about $924 million in 2019, Seoul’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The statement said the two countries reaffirmed the need for a “stable” U.S. military deployment amid the “rapidly changing situation on the Korean Peninsula.” The ministry said the U.S. assured South Korea that it is committed to the alliance and has no plans to adjust the number of its troops in South Korea.

Buying low, selling high ‘Retail arbitrage’ trend has people acting as ‘flesh-and-blood robots for Amazon’

Juston and Kristen Herbert left their jobs in finance and turned to retail arbitrage, the practice of buying and reselling items in bulk, full time.

BUSINESS With their two young kids in tow, Juston and Kristen Herbert drove to a Target near their home outside Scottsdale, Ariz. It was time to get to work.

The Herberts were on the hunt for all of the Contigo water bottles the store had in stock, and kept the camera rolling for their 6,400 YouTube subscribers.

Within minutes, an employee pulled out 32 two-packs — sold on clearance for $5 each — from a back storage room. For two people who recently left their jobs in finance, the blue-andblack plastic bottles might as well have been made of gold.

The Herberts would resell the two-packs on Amazon for $19.95.

Subtracting some taxes and fees, they’d clear $6.16 in profit. All told, the Herbert’s 10-minute Target run earned them $198.

Juston, 30, and Kristen, 28, estimate they can reel in $150,000 this year from their newest gig: retail arbitrage. The basic idea is to buy up a bunch of the same item and then resell them online for a handsome profit.

For some, this is just a lucrative side hustle. For others, it has become their primary way of earning a living.

While the idea to buy something cheap and sell it at a higher price is age-old, the concept of retail arbitrage has emerged in the digital age.

Chris Green wrote one of the go-to how-to books on the topic, titled “Retail Arbitrage.” And he’s helped popularize the moniker.

The term seems to be having a moment. In December, according to Google Trends, searches for “retail arbitrage” spiked on YouTube, where aficionados post videos of their shopping and reselling sprees.

started flipping products on eBay. But Green’s guide focused on the engine behind many of these small businesses: Fulfillment By Amazon, or FBA. Through FBA, people can add their own products to Amazon’s vast online catalogue for varying fees. Sellers package their products and ship them to Amazon

warehouses, where they are stored until an order comes in.

Green, who’s been dubbed the “godfather of retail arbitrage,” used to be a sales representative for Bosch Power Tools. He started reselling power tools on eBay in the early 2000s.

For Mike “Reezy Resells” Rezendes, retail arbitrage has been a kind of salvation.

Rezendes said he grew up in a troubled household and was married with a child by 16. As a teenager, he noticed commercials for eBay on TV and started selling what he could rummage around the house, like his Nintendo and its games and controllers.

Now, Rezendes, 34, has been reselling items online full-time for 14 years. His YouTube channel, “Reezy Resells,” has more than 85,000 subscribers. He runs his company with his best friend and oversees a small team who buy up goods from stores like Nike, Marshalls and Ross.

Last year, the company saw $800,000 in gross sales for about $240,000 in profit. In January, he got more than $8,000 in ad revenue from YouTube.

Rezendes, who lives in Santa Cruz, Calif., said retail arbitrage has kept him from having to work a 9-to-5 desk job. But he also knows online resellers and small-business owners like him are crucial to Amazon’s model.

Amazon “needs people like me to fill all the holes in the marketplace,” he said.

“We’re literally flesh-andblood robots for Amazon,” Rezendes said.

The retail giant hasn’t shied away from promoting its small businesses: In 2018, the number of small and medium-size businesses that passed $1 million in sales in Amazon stores worldwide grew by 20 percent.

Turkey decries treatment of China’s Uighurs ISTANBUL Turkey has called China’s treatment of its minority Uighurs “a great cause of shame for humanity.”

In a statement Saturday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy said it’s “no longer a secret” that China has arbitrarily detained more than 1 million Uighurs in “concentration camps.” He said the Turkic Muslim population faced pressure and “systematic assimilation” in western China.

The minister said Turkey had also learned of the death in prison of famed Uighur musician and poet Abdurehim Heyit, who had been sentenced to eight years over one of his songs.

Heyit was a master of the dutar, a type of two-stringed instrument with a long neck that is found in Iran and throughout Central Asia. His detention was considered indicative of China’s determination to crack down on Uighur intellectuals and cultural figures in what some say is an effort to eradicate a separate Uighur language and identity.

Heyit’s death could not be independently confirmed.

The Chinese Embassy in Ankara called Aksoy’s comments “completely unacceptable” in a lengthy response posted on its website that defended its policies in the northwestern region of Xinjiang, the Uighur homeland.

Center of faceoff woes Of the 100 centers who have taken the most faceoffs in the NHL this season, Evgeny Kuznetsov’s 38.8 percent success rate ranks dead last — a big reason the Capitals are the league’s worst team on draws.

Vonn medals in final race of storied career SKIING Five days after crashing in super-G and three months after tearing a ligament in her left knee, Lindsey Vonn won the bronze medal in the world championship downhill in Are, Sweden, on Sunday in the final race of her career.

“I’m literally tapped out, I can’t cry anymore,” said Vonn, who no longer has any cartilage in her knees. “ … It’s not an easy thing to feel your bones hitting together and continue to push through it.”

The record-setting American skier had been planning on retiring in December but she recently moved up her plans due to persistent pain in both of her surgically repaired knees.

Prospective graduate students often don’t place the same importance on the campus visit — and that can be a mistake.

“I think the campus visit is underrated for graduate students,” says Eric Allen, founder and president of admissions consulting firm Admit Advantage. “And, to be honest, I think the visit for undergraduates is probably a little overrated. Most 17-year-olds don’t know what they want to do, but graduate

school is really about a fit for your career future.”

Graduate school is a major investment of time and money, and a campus visit can go a long way in helping prospective students find the right schools and programs for their career objectives. Here are six tips for making the most of a graduate school campus visit.

Know the best time to visit This can vary from university to university and even from program to program. Sometimes students are invited for preview sessions before they apply. In other cases, a program might invite accepted students for a weekend to showcase what the program offers (and help convince them to accept their admissions offer). And in some instances an interview is part of the admissions process. So it’s important to understand what’s involved in the programs on your list.

Students miss out on food aid, GAO says A federal report released last month urged officials to help more students get access to government food assistance.

The Government Accountability Office found nearly 2 million students from lowincome backgrounds who were potentially eligible for the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in 2016 but did not receive the benefits. At nine of 14 colleges the GAO contacted, some officials and students said they were unfamiliar with or didn’t understand the program. Eligible students include parents with young children, participants in federal work-study programs, recipients of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and students who work at least 20 hours a week. In more than two dozen studies of student access to food, the GAO found that food insecurity rates ranged from 9 percent to more than 50 percent.

Ask about professors’ teaching styles, how much time students spend each week on their classes (especially important for folks who will be going to grad school part time while continuing to work) and if anything about the program surprised them. “Don’t pretend you already know everything,” says Kevin Connor, admissions counselor for graduate programs at the George Mason University School of Business. “And ask questions

that are unique to you, not just questions you looked up online.”

Meet with career services What better way to get a sense of what’s possible after completing your graduate degree? “You can find out where people from that program are actually matriculating to afterwards,” says Allen.

Students should know exactly what they want to get out of a graduate degree as they’re looking at programs. Do they want to use it to climb the corporate ladder, or do they want to focus on research or perhaps become a professor themselves? Understanding their end game is vital as they’re assessing programs; getting information from career services can help them determine if a program matches their goals.

“Don’t be naive and think it’s not part of the admissions process, because it is,” says Allen. “This is an opportunity to impress — or for someone to say that you’re not someone they’d want in their program.” This is especially true for small Ph.D. programs where

Use what you learn wisely A successful campus visit provides valuable insight on whether a program is the right fit. You should leave a visit with an understanding of a program’s values and culture, and whether they align with yours.

“A lot of people have a vision of what a business school or law school or master’s program is like,” Goodman says. “But it’s important to test whether or not you really want to go to that kind of graduate school. STREAMING Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle took turns describing the experience of filming an outlandish scene from their new Hulu series, “PEN15,” in which Konkle’s character tries to rip an unexpectedly stretchy thong off Erskine.

“I’m ripping it off but it’s going, like, 5 feet in the air,” Konkle explains. Erskine recalls the pain this caused her, using some choice profanity, before adding that Konkle “just kept going until it ripped. Anna and I would be dying laughing.”

Given how effervescent the real-life best friends are,

especially together, it’s hard to imagine a situation in which they wouldn’t be the life of the party. But a familiar feeling of uneasiness still swept over them when they began socializing in Los Angeles soon after graduating from New York University, where they had met.

“You instantly revert to those feelings,” Erskine says. “You never really leave that age.”

Instead of wallowing, Erskine and Konkle channeled the feelings into their work. With their friend Sam Zvibleman, they explored the idea of revisiting middle school through a TV show set in 2000. And who better to

“To see an actual middle

schooler going through the traumatic experience is probably going to be dramatic,” Erskine says. “But if you’re seeing it through the eyes of adults and there’s enough distance for the viewer to place these characters, there’s room for it to be funny.”

There’s a charming innocence to how Maya and Anna handle their shared experiences, traumatizing or otherwise. Despite their hormones occasionally pulling them in different directions, Maya and Anna always find their way back to each other.

“That maybe is the optimism of the story, even though it’s dark and sad at times,” Konkle says. “These two loners have each other, and they are able to survive because of that.”

Actor Albert Finney dies at 82

Albert Finney, one of the most respected actors of his generation, died Thursday at age 82. Finney, who said in 2011 that he had been treated for kidney cancer, died from a chest infection at a London hospital. He received Oscar nominations for “Tom Jones,” “Murder on the Orient Express,” “The Dresser,” “Under the Volcano” and “Erin Brockovich.” In his later years, he starred in action films such as “Skyfall” and two “Bourne” movies. The globe’s got talent: ‘World’s Best’ looks far and wide for stars I don’t think you will see anything quite as amazing on TV this year as the Mongolian singer Enkh Erdene, who says he does not speak English, crooning the country song “Amarillo by Morning” with just the right touch of drawl and grit.

The self-dubbed “Mongolian Cowboy” made his first trip to the U.S. to appear on the new CBS series “The World’s Best,” which launched after the Super Bowl to an audience of more than 22 million and now airs at 8 p.m. on Wednesdays.

Sure, it’s just another TV talent show with a $1 million prize for the winner. But what makes the show special is its planetary sweep. At a time when people say mean things about other cultures and countries, “The World’s Best” is a glorious celebration of the gifts of global citizens — Americans, to be sure, but also a singer from Kazakhstan who boasts of a six-octave range,

and two Chinese acrobats who can balance and hop on one arm. And, of course, a singing nun from Italy who performs Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.” Despite its global thrust, the show does put America first.

The three main judges are actor Drew Barrymore, singer Faith Hill and RuPaul, the host of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” They assign up to 50 points per contestant. Behind them is what the show calls its “wall of the world” — rows of seats populated by the likes of Nigerian film star Kate Henshaw and K-pop producer Alex Wright.

It’s great to get voices rarely, if ever, heard on U.S. TV. But each of them can only award 1 point.

James Corden of “The Late Late Show” is the charming host. But RuPaul is the show’s secret weapon. His irreverence adds a welcome edge.

After the nun’s solo, RuPaul slyly notes, “The church is really progressive now!”
