Workers in the Adirondacks have been trying to move a derailed locomotive that was left running for a week. The Saratoga & North Creek locomotive went off the tracks in Johnsburg, N.Y., on Feb. 6 while being used to clear snow from the tracks. The railway left the locomotive running to keep the engine from freezing. The ice made it hard to move, but the fuel odor and the noise almost made residents wish it had been a runaway train. (AP)

that much,” said Del. Lee Carter, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. “They’re trying to keep me in my place as a freshman,” said Del. Debra Rodman, who defeated a longtime incumbent who was popular in the GOP caucus. Republican House Majority Leader Todd Gilbert said it’s nothing personal, it’s just how things have always been. “People come in here with a ton of bright ideas that they think are a magical fix to whatever issue concerns them,” he said. “You don’t just get to come in and dictate to everybody else how the world works and what public policy looks like.”
Saturday night is shaping up to be a sloppy mess of rain, ice or snow, or a combination of the three across the D.C. area. The rain-snow line is a bit of a moving target, which makes the forecast especially challenging. This event is likely to be a quick hitter, arriving in most areas between 2 and 6 p.m. Saturday, and exiting between 10 p.m. Saturday and 2 a.m. Sunday. While precipitation may be in and out in about six hours, it could fall heavily at times. The impact will be reduced some by being on a holiday weekend night, when schools are out, and also due to the fact that temperatures will be relatively mild both leading up to and after the storm. Thursday reached 71 degrees downtown.

VIRGINIA Democrats from around the country cheered last year when a bumper crop of new candidates in Virginia surpassed all expectations, winning 15 seats previously held by Republicans in the Virginia House of Delegates. Powered largely by voter dislike of President Trump, the new class’ success presented a potential model for how Democrats could make similar gains in Congress and around the country in this year’s midterm elections. Many of the newly elected were new to politics, and as a group they brought a sweeping new diversity to Virginia’s legislature. But the thrill of victory in Virginia has given way to frustration, as new lawmakers have had little success advancing their legislation. Republicans, thanks in part to winning a random drawing to decide one tied race, kept control of the state House and have been largely unreceptive to the new Democratic lawmakers’ efforts at getting their campaign promises turned into law. “It’s been tough. It’s certainly a learning experience,” said Danica Roem, the first openly transgender person elected and seated in a state legislature.

But her welcome to the House, which Republicans control 51-49, has been more subdued. All 14 pieces of legislation she’s sponsored have already been killed. That’s a familiar refrain among the new Democratic lawmakers, who have also seen most if not all of their legislation die. The new lawmakers say they weren’t expecting Republicans to embrace all of their ideas, but say they’re puzzled that noncontroversial ideas are dying on strict party-line committee votes. “I was expecting a lot of partisanship; I wasn’t expecting quite

Two immigration bills rejected by the Senate
Thursday, the White House labeled the bipartisan proposal “dangerous policy that will harm the nation.” Minutes later, the chamber voted against Trump’s proposal. Besides helping Dreamers achieve citizenship, the president’s measure would have provided wall funding in one burst, rather than doling it out over 10 years per the bipartisan plan. In addition, Trump’s bill would have prevented legal immigrants from sponsoring parents and siblings for citizenship and would have ended a visa lottery aimed at allowing more diverse
immigrants into the U.S. The compromise bill would have left that lottery intact but barred Dreamers who obtain citizenship from sponsoring their parents. Senate leaders opened the day’s debate by trading blame. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., assailed Democrats for failing to offer “a single proposal that gives us a realistic chance to make law.” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said “the American people will blame President Trump and no one else” for failing to protect Dreamers. ‘Dreamers’ left in limbo as a bipartisan measure and Trump’s plan fail IMMIGRATION The Senate rejected both a bipartisan immigration plan and a more restrictive proposal by President Trump on Thursday, suggesting the latest electionyear debate on an issue that fires up both parties’ voters will produce a familiar outcome: stalemate. Facing a White House veto threat and opposition from Senate GOP leaders, the chamber derailed a plan by bipartisan senators that would have helped 1.8 million young immigrant “Dreamers” — those brought to the U.S. illegally as children who risk deportation because they lack permanent authorization to stay — achieve citizenship. It also would have doled out $25 billion for Trump’s coveted wall with Mexico. It lost 54-45, six short of the 60 votes needed for passage. Trump’s own plan fared even worse as 60 senators voted no and just 39 voted for it — 21 shy of 60. Top Democrats held out faint hopes that the bipartisan package would prevail, or at least force Trump to negotiate further. But he proved unwilling to fold on his demands for a tougher bill, reflecting his campaign’s hard-line immigration stance. In a written statement earlier

nation+world Brain damage found in U.S. diplomats after mystery ‘health attacks’ CUBA Doctors are releasing the first detailed medical reports about the hearing, vision, balance and brain symptoms suffered in what the State Department has called “health attacks” on U.S. diplomats in Cuba. Still missing: A clear diagnosis of what triggered the mysterious health problems. All together, the symptoms are similar to the brain dysfunction seen with concussions, concluded a team of specialists from the University of Pennsylvania who tested 21 of the 24 embassy personnel thought to be affected.
MCDONALD’S MAKEOVER
Cuba has insisted there were no attacks. The Journal of the American Medical Association released the report late Wednesday. The mystery began in late 2016 when U.S. embassy personnel began seeking medical care for hearing loss and ear-ringing they linked to weird noises or vibrations — initially leading investigators to suspect “sonic attacks.” Now, officials are carefully avoiding that term, as doctors involved in the probe wonder whether the sounds were a byproduct of something else that might help explain the full symptom list: memory problems, impaired concentration, irritability, balance problems and dizziness. Wednesday’s report makes

clear that the findings are preliminary. Important complications remain, including that there’s no information to
compare the patients’ brain or hearing health before they went to Cuba. “It really looks like concussion without the history of head trauma,” said report co-author Dr. Douglas Smith of Penn’s Center for Brain Injury and Repair. Advanced MRI scans spotted changes in what are called white matter tracts of the brain in some patients. But the authors acknowledged those abnormalities could be due to something earlier in life. The mysterious case has sent U.S.-Cuba relations plummeting from what had been a high point when the two counties restored relations under former President Obama in 2015. LAURAN NEERGAARD

TECHNOLOGY Russia’s disinformation campaign during the 2016 presidential election relied heavily on stories produced by major American news sources to shape the online political debate, according to a new analysis published Thursday. The analysis by Columbia University researcher Jonathan Albright of more than 36,000 tweets sent by Russian accounts showed that obscure or foreign sources played a minor role, suggesting that the discussion of “fake news” has been miscast. Some well-chronicled hoaxes worked. But Russian-controlled Twitter accounts, Albright said, were far more likely to share stories produced by sources of U.S. news and commentary that were generally accurate. The most common links were to Breitbart News, followed by The Washington Post and the San Francisco Chronicle. The list of the top 25 sites had a conservative bent, such as Daily Caller and Fox News. The Russian government-funded news site RT ranked 19th; no other foreignbased site was on the top 25. The accounts also curated the flow of tweets to highlight developments that bolstered Republican Donald Trump and undermined his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. The volume of tweets shows a major spike of activity, for example, in the days after Clinton stumbled in New York on Sept. 11 while battling pneumonia. CRAIG TIMBERG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

PARKLAND, FLA. A student had a message for politicians Thursday, the day after he survived a mass shooting that killed 17 people and injured 15 others at his school, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in a South Florida suburb. “Please, take action. Ideas are great. Ideas are wonderful and they help you get re-elected and everything,” David Hogg said on CNN as he looked straight at the camera. “But what’s more important is actual action … that results in saving thousands of children’s lives. Please, take action.” Hogg, a senior, said he was in an AP environmental science class Wednesday afternoon when he heard a gunshot. Then the fire alarm went off. Hogg said he and his classmates went out to the hallway, thinking the school was doing a fire drill. As they were walking, “a flood of people came along,” he said. “They said, ‘Don’t come this way, don’t come this way. He’s coming this way,’ ” Hogg told The Washington Post. Hogg said a culinary teacher kept him and several other students safe inside a classroom. The student journalist then pulled out his camera and interviewed classmates while they

She said she was planning to go to a gun range for her 18th birthday to learn how to shoot. It’s definitely eye-opening to the fact that we need more gun control in our country.” School shootings have happened so often in the United States that she said people have become inured to the threat. Hogg said he decided to start recording to make sure he would have a story to tell, in case he died. “A story that would echo on and show people that there’s a serious issue in this country that people need to face, take a long, hard long at, and realize [that] blood is being spilled on the floors of American classrooms,” he said. Asked by CNN on Thursday about what kind of action President Trump and lawmakers need to take, Hogg said that “any action” is better than “complete stagnancy” and political finger-pointing. “We can say, ‘Yes, we’re going to do all these things. Teen admits to massacre
premeditated murder Thursday in the attack at the high school in the sleepy community on the edge of the Everglades. It was the nation’s deadliest school attack since a gunman assaulted an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., more than five years ago. Meanwhile, students struggled to describe the violence that ripped through their classrooms on an ordinary day just before classes were to be dismissed. Catarina Linden, a 16-year-old sophomore, said she was in an advanced math class Wednesday when the gunfire began. “He shot the girl next to me,” she said, adding that when she finally was able to leave the classroom, the air was foggy with gun smoke. “I stepped on so many shell casings. There were bodies on the ground, and there was blood everywhere.” Some bodies remained inside the high school Thursday as authorities analyzed the crime scene. Thirteen wounded survivors were still hospitalized, including two in critical condition. Authorities have not described any specific motive, except to say that Cruz had been kicked out of the school, which has about 3,000 students. Students who knew him described a volatile teen whose strange behavior had caused others to end friendships with him. Cruz was ordered held without bond at a brief court hearing. He wore an orange jumpsuit with his hands cuffed at his waist. His attorney did not contest the order and had her arm around Cruz during the short appearance. Afterward, she called him a “broken human being.” Cruz was placed under a suicide
watch, Executive Chief Public Defender Gordon Weekes said. The leader of a white nationalist militia called the Republic of Florida said Thursday that Cruz was a member of his group and participated in exercises in Tallahassee. Jordan Jereb said

WASHINGTONPOST.COM THE FIX
The gunman in Wednesday’s rampage at a South Florida high school is accused of killing at least 17 people with an AR-15 rifle that authorities say he purchased legally. But President Trump is already signaling that the deadliest school shooting since 2012 will not be an occasion to re-evaluate access to such weapons, often referred to as assault rifles. In a tweet Thursday, the president framed the tragedy as indicative of a mental health issue, rather than a gun-control problem. “So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed,” Trump wrote. “Must always report such instances to authorities, again and again!” In a televised address hours later, the president repeated the phrase “mentally disturbed” and pledged to “tackle the difficult issue of mental health” but did not mention gun control. Last year, Trump signed a bill lifting an Obama-era regulation that made it harder for people who receive Social Security payments for mental illnesses to buy guns. Advocates of stricter gun laws hope that each mass shooting will be the one that finally spurs Congress to act, but the early indication is that Trump will not support any such effort because, in his view, the real problem in Florida was the absence of a mental health intervention.

PARKLAND, FLA. The teenager accused of using a semi-automatic rifle to kill 17 people at a Florida high school confessed to carrying out one of the nation’s deadliest school shootings and concealing extra ammunition in his backpack, according to a sheriff’s department report released Thursday. The report from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office said Nikolas Cruz told investigators that he shot students in the hallways and on the grounds of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, 45 minutes north of Miami. Cruz, 19, said he brought more loaded magazines to the school and kept them hidden in the backpack until he got on campus. As students began to flee, he said, he decided to discard his AR-15 rifle and a vest he was wearing so he could blend in with the crowd running from the school. Police recovered the rifle and the vest. After the rampage, the suspect headed to a Walmart and bought a drink at a Subway restaurant before walking to a McDonald’s. He was taken into custody about 40 minutes after leaving the McDonald’s, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said. A day after the attack, a fuller portrait emerged of the suspect, a loner who had worked at a dollar store, joined the school’s ROTC program and posted photos of weapons on Instagram. At least one student said classmates joked that Cruz would “be the one to shoot up the school.” Cruz, a 19-year-old orphan whose mother died last year, was charged with 17 counts of

Nikolas Cruz, charged with 17 counts of murder, confesses to shooting students with an AR-15
Officials are investigating whether authorities missed warning signs about Nikolas Cruz’s potentially violent nature. “Im going to be a professional school shooter,” a YouTube user with the screen name “Nikolas Cruz” posted in September. The FBI was contacted about the comment, but did not speak to the teen. The 19-year-old was also expelled last year from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School for undisclosed disciplinary reasons. One student said that Cruz had been abusive to his ex-girlfriend and that his expulsion was over a fight with her new boyfriend. Math teacher Jim Gard told The Miami Herald the school had sent out an email warning teachers that Cruz shouldn’t be allowed on campus with a backpack. Cruz legally purchased the semi-automatic rifle he used in the shooting from a dealer in Florida in February 2017, authorities said. (AP)

All-Star weekend
Rounding into shape

The NBA All-Star Game debuts a format Sunday in which team captains LeBron James and Stephen Curry drafted players without regard to conference. That’s just the conclusion of a busy weekend. (EXPRESS)
Eaton expects to start on opening day as his rehabilitation from ACL surgery reaches its final stages at spring training NATIONALS Adam Eaton and his family arrived in West Palm Beach, Fla., on Jan. 19, exactly a month before Nationals position players must report for spring training. He and his wife wanted to get away from the brutal winter in Michigan. Lying on a beach seemed like a good idea. On top of that, the shortest apartment leases offered in West Palm are for three months. No sense in paying a month’s rent without using the place. Eaton’s time, of course, wasn’t exactly spent on vacation. The outfielder is still in recovery mode nearly 10 months after tearing the ACL in his left knee last April. He’s nearing the finish line, and on Wednesday, 43 days before the Nationals begin the regular season in Cincinnati, Eaton said he was confident he’ll be ready for that first game. “We still have quite a bit of
time until opening day, and that’s our focus,” Eaton said. “Unless something unforeseen happens, I think that’s easily attainable.” Eaton, 29, has checked nearly all the boxes in his rehabilitation; he’s run in a straight line, fielded grounders, long-tossed, and hit batting practice. Two steps remain: cutting on the knee and facing live pitching. He’ll tackle those before appearing in a Grapefruit League game. When Eaton does play, it’ll be as a left fielder. He’ll move from center field to replace the departed Jayson Werth after Michael A. Taylor’s two-way emergence in Eaton’s absence last season solidified his place in center. Eaton’s experience in left field includes 42 games, 29 starts, and 2981/3 innings at the major league level. He started two games there last season. “Michael Taylor is more than
170 RUNS IN APRIL
The number of runs the Nationals scored last year in April, the most in the big leagues and 42 more than the next-closest team, the Yankees. accomplished in center,” Eaton said. “That dude plays a heck of a center field. And I’m a man and I’ll say he can probably play a better center field than I can at this point, with my leg especially.” The position change — and having Taylor’s range in center
field — should help Eaton limit the stress on his knee as he works his way back to normalcy. Doctors told him it’ll take some time before he feels like himself. In December, manager Dave Martinez said he planned to have Eaton lead off, a noteworthy statement given Trea Turner’s strong candidacy for the role. Turner will then likely bat second, giving the Nationals a dynamic top-ofthe-order duo they envisioned setting the table for Bryce Harper and Co. when they traded three top pitching prospects for Eaton before last season. Eaton thrived in the role last season, batting .314 with an .816 OPS in 16 games as the leadoff man before the injury. He was the spark plug during a historic offensive April for the Nationals, and he should be back in time to do it again.

REDSKINS Redskins safety Su’a Cravens officially can resume his NFL career. After applying to the league Monday to be reinstated, Cravens has been removed from the reserve/left squad list. It’s a formality, but also an important step for Cravens, 22, whose career was in limbo after he abruptly left the team in September. On Dec. 12, Cravens’ agent announced that the 2016 secondround pick had been cleared by doctors to resume football activities after receiving “targeted treatment and rehabilitation” for “post-concussion syndrome.” Still, the Cravens saga is far from over. There still is the question of whether he will play for the Redskins in 2018. Citing family matters, Cravens announced during Labor Day weekend that he was retiring. The Redskins initially thought a brief break would help. The organization later felt it was better for everyone to place Cravens — who had walked away from the team late in the 2016 season — on the reserve/left squad list. Cravens has three years left on his rookie deal, but Washington

BARRY SVRLUGA | THE WASHINGTON POST
Giant table-setter: Gold in GS shows Shiffrin is serious By the time Mikaela Shiffrin began to sob Thursday afternoon, we had learned all we needed to know. The final competitor in the women’s giant slalom at the PyeongChang Olympics, Manuela Moelgg of Italy, was still on the course. But the scoreboard, by the final interim split, showed Moelgg trailed by more than a second. It was over. Gold was Shiffrin’s. So then, please, cry. With that performance, Shiffrin put these games on notice: She is here to display her best skiing. And her best skiing is the best in the world. “Now, we got the ball rolling,” Shiffrin said. She arrived in South Korea tired. Her confidence was rattled. But her first gold of these games restored it. It was only one race. But after Shiffrin won the second gold
of her young career — keep in mind that her 23rd birthday isn’t until next month — a historic Olympics could be afoot. What Shiffrin needed to show Thursday — in an event that had been pushed back from Monday due to weather— was that her recent World Cup results were a fluke, not a trend. She straddled the new year by winning eight of nine events, unheard of in the anything-can-happen world of Alpine racing. What followed was a pre-Olympic jolt: seventh, did not finish, did not finish, seventh, did not finish. “The wheels came off the bus a little bit,” said her mother, Eileen, who also serves as one of her coaches. The task, before traveling to Korea, was to get out a jack and put them back on. Part of Shiffrin’s development into the world’s best female skier at the moment has been a newfound ability to excel in multiple
disciplines. Some of this is a natural progression from four years ago when, at 18, she won slalom gold in Sochi. Last season, she showed complete form as the World Cup overall champion, a status that counts finishes in all disciplines. But training in multiple disciplines brought on fatigue that led her into a slump. After the final World Cup event before she traveled here — a slalom run in which she led with three gates to go but lost her balance — she took four days off. In Camp Shiffrin, that was uncharted territory. Turns out it was necessary. Shiffrin aced her first test. She was favored to win the slalom, which ended after Express’ deadline Thursday. She will skip Saturday’s super-G — the only discipline in which she does not have a podium finish in World Cup — to rest before next week’s downhill and the Alpine combined. In 2002, Croatia’s Janica Kostelic produced the best Olympics for an Alpine racer: three golds and a silver. It seems absurd to think something like that could be repeated. But after the giant slalom, the ball was rolling. Follow Barry Svrluga on Twitter @barrysvrluga
Team Austria says snowboard cross racer who broke vertebra in neck suffered no neurological issues
Tongan cross-country skier Pita Taufatofua joked that he has two goals when he competes in his first Winter Olympic event Friday: Don’t hit a tree and finish before they turn off the lights. The “shirtless” Tongan, who first gained fame as the tae kwan do athlete at the Rio Games who paraded his oiled torso around the opening ceremony, qualified for PyeongChang despite having taken up crosscountry less than a year ago and having spent less than 12 weeks of his life on snow. Taufatofua, 34, said his real long-term goal is to inspire others from the South Pacific to give the Olympics a shot. “I won’t medal on Friday, but in four years someone from Tonga might, in eight years someone from the Pacific might,” Taufatofua said. U.S. suffers fifth straight loss to Canada in likely preview of medal game WOMEN’S HOCKEY Goaltender Genevieve Lacasse was not visible amid the mess of Americans and Canadian teammates around her, wrestling first for the puck — which the Americans had pushed to within inches of tying the game — and then with each other.
After the horn sounded, and the Canadians had sealed their fifth straight win over their neighboring rivals, two players went to the ground in a blur of limbs. Referees separated the others. That — the physical, routine chaos through which Canada held on to a 2-1 preliminary-round victory Thursday — is USA-Canada in a nutshell. The result didn’t matter to either team’s progress through the Olympic tournament, but neither

While neither has locked up a spot in the gold medal game yet, both had already secured byes to the semifinals. The U.S. had outscored two opponents 8-1 entering the pool play finale. The Canadians’ margin was 9-1. It took less than eight minutes Thursday before a scrum in front of the net required players to be separated. Two minutes later, Canada’s Meghan Agosta ended up in the penalty box for shoving Meghan Duggan into the boards, an offense so obvious she skated right to the box when play stopped. hether you have a long daily commute because of the distance from your home to the office or just because of rush hour traffic, we all need to stay awake somehow! Below are a few ideas to help you pass the time while sitting in your car on your way to work.
Talk Shows Tune into a radio station to listen in on a talk show. Listening to talk radio will get your brain juices flowing, even at early hours in the morning. This is a great way to learn about what is going on locally and in surrounding areas. Talk shows almost always offer caller giveaways, so if you are able to phone-in, try your
luck by being an active listener. Not a fan of talk radio? Look into downloading some podcasts to try out. Some suggestions are WTF with Marc Maron, How Did This Get Made?, Beautiful/ Anonymous, and, of course, TED Talks.
Carpooling
Books on Tape
will have someone to chat with
Get your favorite book on tape or a book you’ve been dying to read and listen to it on your way to work. If you are always working and don’t have the time to sit down with a good book, take advantage of your commute time to listen to your favorite novel. Are you wanting to learn a new language? Purchase a language learning tape and actively listen on your way to work.
Hate commuting and being alone in your car in the morning? Try and find someone from your workplace that lives near you and ask them if they would like to tag along instead of driving in two separate cars. This way, you to and from work. A perk: you’ll be able to take advantage of the HOV lane.
Upbeat Playlists It can be such a drag driving for a long period of time in complete silence. Create a playlist with your favorite tunes or newly downloaded songs to keep you up-to-beat during your commute.
Coffee To stay alert during your commute, fuel your body with coffee. Not only will this give you an energy boost, but it will make time fly during your commute. Not a coffee drinker? Grab a Red Bull or 5 Hour Energy.
Phone a Friend Don’t feel like listening to the radio or music? Call a friend or relative you think will be up early in the morning or who is available in the evening during your trek home. You never know; there might be some early-birds in your contacts list, or someone suffering through the same 5 o’clock rush hour that could also use someone to chat with. n By Victoria Naranjo for Apartment Showcase

First, let me say that writing “here’s what ‘Black Panther’ means for white people!” is inherently problematic. Framing every piece of art — and that’s what “Black Panther” is, a stunning piece of art — in the context of whiteness can suggest that a movie about black characters, starring black
actors, written by black men and directed by a black man, is more than a “black movie” because Look! White kids want “Black Panther” valentines too! (We couldn’t find any. He went with Snoopy because “girls will like them.”) This is an exceptional movie worthy of celebration regardless of whether it reached a 9-yearold white kid. Black Panther is not a superhero who happens to be black. His blackness — and the fact that he is African, not AfricanAmerican — goes to the absolute center of his identity and the overarching theme of the movie. Moreover, Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger (the best, most nuanced “villain” in superhero-movie history) represents the African-American
experience that, yes, skin color absolutely does matter. It is important that Black Panther is black. There are some traditionally white superheroes who have become people of color over the years — in the comics, Captain America was black when Sam Wilson strapped on the shield; the current Spider-Man is Miles Morales, who is black and Puerto Rican — but Steve Rogers and Peter Parker were never defined by their race. Their whiteness could be shrugged off because, when you’re white, it’s easy to pretend that race is unimportant. Black Panther (like the world of Marvel’s new movie) is absolutely, proudly, importantly black. For someone to

DIRECTOR: Ryan Coogler STARS: Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o IN A NUTSHELL: T’Challa, the newly crowned king of Wakanda, is drawn by a powerful old enemy into a conflict that puts the fate of the African nation and the world at risk.

say that it doesn’t matter that he is, or that they “don’t see skin color,” or that his blackness is somehow less important because little white kids want to be him, is to do a huge disservice to the character, the movie and the realities of race in America. When my son pulls off his Halloween mask, he’ll re-enter a country where every president save one, over 90 percent of CEOs and all of the original movie Avengers (when one of them isn’t green) share his skin color. That experience will not be the same for a black kid. “Black Panther” is what is lacking in much of modern cinema: It is something definitively meaningful. It is an opportunity for those who have the advantage of thinking that skin color doesn’t matter to recognize why and how it does. To think of Black Panther’s race as an aside, as happenstance — the way it is with most white superheroes — is to dismiss the very core of the character. It’s not only a matter of color; it’s a matter of identity.
Kendrick Lamar’s masterfully curated “Black Panther the Album” is powerful and reflective — but neither Lamar, nor his lyrics, are what make this work remarkable. Instead, it’s all the layering — of artists, styles, sounds and even language. The somber “Seasons” opens with a verse from South African rapper Sjava, whose bars need no translation to be felt, while “Bloody Waters” marries the high energy of Anderson .Paak with the melancholy depth of James Blake. For some, this is just a starstacked compilation piece. But for others excited about the film — its diversity, symbolism and vision — this album fulfills. MELANIE SIMS (AP)

Prehistoric, indeed Aardman’s ‘Early Man’ lacks the innovation of the studio’s past films FILM REVIEW Aardman Animations is, along with Pixar, responsible for some of the wittiest family entertainment ever, charming both parents and children. “Chicken Run,” “Wallace and Gromit” and its many spinoffs, and “Shaun the Sheep” — the TV series and the movie — are all delightfully clever, which is why the British studio’s name inevitably encourages high expectations. In the grand scheme of movies for kids, Aardman’s new stopmotion comedy, “Early Man,” is hardly a stinker. But it’s also less fun and inventive than you’d expect, given the company’s stellar, Oscar-winning track record. The comedy, directed by Aardman fixture Nick Park, centers on Dug (voice of Eddie Redmayne), a late-Stone Age cave man who lives in a lush valley with a tribe of bungling rubes and an adorable pet hog. It’s a miracle Dug and the crew have survived so long, considering they can barely hunt down a rabbit. So when Lord Nooth (Tom Hiddleston) — a Frenchaccented nobleman who’s already enjoying the innovations
‘Early Man’ (PG, 89 min.) DIRECTOR: Nick Park STARS: Eddie Redmayne, Tom Hiddleston, Maisie Williams IN A NUTSHELL: In the Stone Age, a cave man and his tribe team up to defeat their powerful enemy, who is threatening to take over their home.
of the early Bronze Age — rides in on a mammoth with metal weapons and claims the land, what can the more primitive group do but flee? Nooth demands that his attendants immediately start mining ore. “Mine or what?” responds one of his lackeys, in a bit of middling wordplay that speaks to the quality of the comedy. There’s even a sliced-bread joke. Most of the humor revolves around how early man accomplishes modern-day tasks in rudimentary ways: using baby alligators as clothespins, for example, or blowing into the end of a lizard to make music (which doesn’t even really make sense). The entire tongue-in-cheek premise of the movie is that
soccer was invented during the Pleistocene epoch, when a meteor fell to Earth and a bunch of barbarians couldn’t handle the hot piece of rock. So they started kicking it around. And that’s how “Early Man,” against all expectations, turns into a run-of-the-mill sports movie — soccer being the game of choice in Lord Nooth’s kingdom, where his team of arrogant hunks is unbeatable. Dug approaches Nooth with a wager: The winner of a soccer match between the cave-dwellers and Nooth’s players gets to keep the land where Dug grew up. From there, “Early Man” becomes an underdog athletic tale. There’s also a sporty savior in the form of Goona (Maisie Williams), one of Lord Nooth’s subjects and a secret soccer whiz who’s never been able to play in broad daylight because she’s a woman. There are certainly amusements along the way, yet such diversions don’t entirely distract from a sense that we’ve seen “Early Man” before. Cheeky references to Manchester United and “Jurassic pork” only go so far. STEPHANIE MERRY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Daniels to star in Sorkin’s ‘Mockingbird’ on Broadway Veteran actor Jeff Daniels will star in the Broadway production of “To Kill a Mockingbird,” Harper Lee’s seminal American novel, to be directed next season by Tony winner Bartlett Sher with an adapted script from Oscar winner Aaron Sorkin. Daniels — the star of Sorkin’s erstwhile HBO series “The Newsroom” — will portray lawyer Atticus Finch. The play is to begin preview performances Nov. 1, at a theater to be announced, before opening on Dec. 13. The producers on Thursday identified other members of a sprawling cast: Celia Keenan-Bolger (who will play the book’s narrator, Scout), Stephen McKinley Henderson, Gideon Glick, LaTanya Richardson Jackson and others. ‘Double Lover’ shocks to get at a deeper truth FILM REVIEW Director Francois Ozon delved into the intersection of emotion and sexuality in his previous films, yet, with the French erotic thriller “Double Lover,” he’s never been this brazen. In it, Marine Vacth plays a troubled woman named Chloe, whose physician recommends that she see a therapist for psychosomatic stomachaches. Paul (Jeremie Renier) is an attentive listener, but his strictly therapeutic relationship with his new patient ends after they develop a mutual attraction. Then, one day, Chloe sees Paul with another woman. He insists it wasn’t him, and Chloe must have seen a double. In this case, he means it literally: Paul has a twin brother, Louis, who is also a therapist. Chloe starts visiting Louis in secret, and she cannot reconcile how identical twins can be so different. The script, adapted from a Joyce Carol Oates novel, follows Chloe as she attempts to uncover the nature of a fissure between Paul and Louis. She pursues both men because each lover, separately, is incomplete. Renier’s dual performance is also fascinating: It’s always clear which twin we’re seeing, even when they appear together. “Double Lover” introduces an unlikely triangle, while avoiding a contrived solution. There’s no realism here, yet the film finds, through edgy exaggeration, a deeper, more penetrating truth. ALAN ZILBERMAN (TWP)

EXPECTED RELEASE: April 27
EXPECTED RELEASE: June 15
SUMMARY: Amy Schumer stars as an averagelooking woman who gets clunked on the head and wakes up believing she’s incredibly attractive. This means she feels good about herself, has more confidence and believes she’s entitled to be treated well. But, see, she’s NOT, and that’s what makes it funny! Right? KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)
SUMMARY: With the trailer picking up right where the first (amazing) film left off, we see that Elastigirl is taking the lead on fighting bad guys while Mr. Incredible stays home playing what some people will annoyingly call “Mr. Mom.” He seems like a progressive guy, so we can only hope he punches the first person who says he’s “baby-sitting.” K.P.K.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
