Republicans’ primary tone has become more negative than ever

D[]Wj_l[ 9WcfW_]d 7jjWYai

MWi^_d]jed If you thought you were living through a particularly nasty presidential primary, it turns out you were right. Four years ago, just 6 percent of campaign advertising in the GOP primary amounted to attacks on other Republicans, a figure that has shot up to more than 50 percent in this election, according to Kantar Media/ CMAG, an ad-tracking company. And the negative ads are not just more frequent — they also appear to be more vitriolic. In 2008, one of harshest ads run by Mitt Romney ahead of the Iowa caucus criticized Sen. John McCain’s position on immigration, but only after calling him “an honorable man.” Rom ne y ’s ca mpa ign bega n running an ad Friday in Michigan showing a limp body sinking in murky water, while a narrator intones: “America is drowning in national debt, yet Rick Santorum supported billions in earmarks.”

The pro-Newt Gingrich super PAC Winning Our Future accused Republican front-runner Mitt Romney of being a “predatory corporate raider,” showing footage of an elderly woman saying, “I feel that is the man who destroyed us.”

All of this invective is flowing in an election season when Republicans had hoped to train their resources on beating President Obama — candidates typically save their harshest attacks for the general election. But a wildly unpredictable GOP primary has upended that plan and dissolved the truce. It is happening largely because of new rules governing campaign money. Also, this race has a different dynamic, a front-runner who lacks a prohibitive lead.

Even before the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses, the race turned negative. The first ad from Restore Our Future, a super PAC backing Romney, said that “Newt Gingrich has more baggage than the airlines.”

8[dZ_d] j^[ Hkb[i GOP Party strategists point to million-dollar political contributions to super PACs as part of the reason for the negativity in campaign ads. Data show that super PACs, which have run more advertising than the campaigns themselves, have spent 72 percent of their money on negative ads. The figure for campaigns is 27 percent. (Ads were considered negative if they mentioned another Republican candidate.) (T WP)

Once the tone turned negative, it stayed that way. Romney and the groups backing him have led the trend, spending two-thirds on negative ads. Gingrich and the Winning Our Future PAC backing him have spent half of their funds on spots attacking other Republicans. Santorum and the PACs behind him have devoted one out of every four dollars to attack ads. “W hen this whole campaign star ted, t he Republicans were very enthusiastic,” said Winning Our Future spokesman Rick Tyler, adding that Romney’s approach is depressing turnout. “By the time he’s done, there will be no one left to vote against Barack Obama.” T.W. Sex-Change Treatments for Kids on the Rise Report: Patients are getting more support from doctors, parents 9^_YW]e A small but growing number of teens and even younger children who think they were born the wrong sex are getting support from parents and from doctors who give them sex-changing treatments, according to reports in the medical journal Pediatrics. The issue raises ethical questions, and some experts urge caution in treating children with pubertyblocking drugs and hormones.

An 8-year-old second-grader in Los Angeles is a typical patient. Born a girl, the child announced at 18 months, “I a boy” and has stuck with that belief. The family was shocked but now refers to the child as a boy and is watching for the first signs of puberty to begin treatment, his mother said. Pediatricians need to know these kids deserve treatment, said Dr. Norman Spack, author of one of three reports published Monday and director of one of the nation’s first gender identity medical clinics, at Children’s Hospital Boston. “If you open the doors ... they’re out there,” Spack said, adding by some estimates, 1 in 10,000 chil-

dren have the condition. Offering sex-changing treatment to kids younger than 18 raises ethical concerns, said Dr. Margaret Moon, a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ bioethics committee. She was not involved

in any of the reports. Some kids may get a psychiatric diagnosis when they are just hugely uncomfortable with narrowly defined gender roles; or some may be gay and are coerced into treatment by parents more comfortable with a sex change than having a gay child, said Moon. Guidelines from the Endocrine Society endorse trangender hormone treatment but say it should not be given before puberty begins. At that point, the guidelines recommend puberty-blocking drugs until age 16, followed by lifelong sex-changing hormones with monitoring for potential health risks. LINDSEY TANNER (AP)

Syrian Forces Amass Near Homs Activists warn attack on city looms despite efforts for cease-fire

Syrian tanks and troops massed Monday outside the resistance stronghold of Homs for a possible ground assault that one activist warned could unleash a new round of fierce and bloody urban combat even as the Red Cross tried to broker a cease-fire to allow emergency aid in. A flood of military reinforcements has been a prelude to previous offensives by President Bashar Assad’s regime, which has tried to use its overwhelming firepower to crush an opposition that has been bolstered by defecting soldiers and hardened by 11 months of street battles. The central city of Homs — and in particular the opposition district known as Baba Amr — has become critical ground for both sides, and Assad’s regime wants desperately to erase the embarrassing defiance

McCain said he did not support direct U.S. weapons supplies to Syrian opposition forces, but has suggested the Arab League or others could help bolster the fighting power of the anti-Assad groups. Clashes between military rebels and Syrian forces are growing more frequent, and the defectors have managed to take control of small pieces of territory in the north and parts of Homs province. Increasingly, Syria appears to be careening toward an all-out civil war. Activists believe Assad may be trying to subdue Homs — an important stronghold for antiAssad groups — before a planned referendum Sunday on a new constitution. The charter would allow a bigger role for political opposition to challenge Assad’s Baath Party, which has controlled Syria since a 1963 coup. But the leaders of the uprising have dismissed the referendum as an attempt at superficial reforms that do nothing to crack the regime’s hold on power. BRIAN MURPHY AND ZEINA K AR AM (AP)

Just One of the Guys J^[ DWj_edWbi For all Stephen Strasburg has accomplished in his brief career, his most vital ambition has been the least attainable. He struck out 14 batters in his first big league game, instantly multiplied the Nationals’ relevance and thrived after he received a torn-ligament diagnosis. What he has not managed, despite his best effort, is to blend in. “That’s all he wants to be,” pitching coach Steve McCatty said, “is one of the guys.” Strasburg may finally get his wish. Strasburg appeared at the Nationals’ complex Sunday morning, the official reporting date for pitchers and catchers, delighted to begin his third spring training as, to use his phrase, “just another donkey.” No longer the biggest curiosity in all of spring training or consigned to rehab, Strasburg is simply another starting pitcher readying for the long season, albeit one expected to carry a starting rotation while being limited, most likely, to about 160 innings. On Monday, he was among the players taking the field for the first day of spring training in Viera, Fla. Strasburg will take on his first full major league season with the effects of Tommy John surgery, both physical and mental, now a memory from the previous 18 months.

ly 160 innings before they shut him down this season, like they did for Jordan Zimmermann last year in Zimmermann’s first full season after Tommy John surgery. Nationals GM Mike Rizzo said on Monday that the innings limit won’t cause the club to do anything — such as skip scheduled starts — to alter the pitcher’s normal schedule. “There’s not going to be a whole lot of tinkering going on,” the GM said. “We’re going to run him out there until his innings are done.” (T WP/AP)

One year ago, Strasburg could throw only 75 feet or so. Now, he will perform the same daily tasks as the rest of the Nationals’ starters. “It just feels like it almost never happened,” Strasburg said. It took Strasburg time to reach that point. Even last year, when he mostly dominated in five major league starts, Strasburg wondered about the condition of his reconstructed elbow. “That little thing in the back of your head,” Strasburg said. “‘Is everything right?’” Once he began throwing this off-season, his mentality had changed. That little thing in the back of his head had disappeared. He could pick up a baseball and chuck, just like always, without any worry or second thought. “That was the biggest thing, just taking a little bit of time off. When you go out there and throw, it feels so much more natural now than it did coming off the surgery,” Strasburg said. “My mind’s a lot clearer. I just go out there and throw the baseball. I don’t think about, as much, mechanics or anything. I don’t feel myself holding back a little bit. I just let it go.” Strasburg went through a typical off-season regimen. He no longer needed extensive treatment to recover from a simple throwing session. He mixed in more yoga, which he fi rst picked up in college, to improve his flexibility. He has started throwing bullpen sessions already, and after those, he noticed an improvement over throwing sessions done after his rehab last year. “As far as being able to bounce back from the throwing and stuff, I definitely didn’t need as much treatment,” Strasburg said. “I was still doing all my shoulder stuff, elbow stuff, just to keep it in shape. But last year I was having to do a little bit more just to make sure I was ready.” ADAM KILGORE (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Position Shift for Rendon Anthony Rendon, the Nationals’ first draft pick last year, walked into a major league clubhouse as a player for the first time on Monday. He learned that he won’t be limited to his customary third base — where Ryan Zimmerman is entrenched as a starter — this spring. Manager Davey Johnson will use Rendon at second base, shortstop and third base. (TWP)

A man walks up to a woman on a Metro train and tells her she looks good in that skirt. Is that an insult, sexual harassment or a compliment? A grass-roots group says it’s a form of “street harassment” that has become all too common throughout the transit network. Members of Collective Action for Safe Spaces/Holla Back DC said they will speak about sexual harassment Wednesday before the D.C. Council’s Committee on Government Operations. Metro General Manager Richard Sarles and some of his senior staff are expected to testify on the transit agency’s performance over the past year. Council member Muriel Bowser, D-Ward 4, who is also on the Metro board, heads the committee. Collective Action, according to its website, fights “street harass-

ment in A merica’s capital by empowering Washingtonians to speak out against gender-based sexual harassment and assault.” Chai Shenoy, co-founder of Collective Action, said her group is worried about the stories it receives and posts on its website about sexual harassment on buses and trains, and at Metro stops.

H[fehj ?j Officials said Metro does not track sexual harassment complaints but that passengers who think they have been sexually harassed should contact Metro Transit Police. Officers receive sensitivity training to handle such complaints. (T WP)

The group, which has been around since 2009, was started as an online forum where people could submit their accounts of public sexual harassment and assault incidents. Shenoy helped start the group after a passenger exposed himself to her while she was on a nearly empty rail car.

“I didn’t know what to do and feared for my safety,” she said. “I wanted to do something and share my experience with others.” Shenoy said she has called and emailed Metro about some of the incidents that have been reported to the website but has received only a generic email response. “We’re shocked about how much sexual harassment occurs,” Shenoy said. According to Metro, 84 cases involving sexual offenses were reported to Metro Transit Police last year. They included one rape and 40 cases of indecent exposure or other sexual acts. Of the 40, 12 involved arrests. Shenoy said the group also wants to see Metro undertake a public service campaign to educate people on such issues, similar to its “See Something, Say Something” anti-terrorism campaign. “Metro can do a lot more than it has done, which to this date and to my knowledge is very little,” Shenoy said. NPS: Shuttles Coming to Mall MWi^_d]jed Visitors to the National Mall and to Arlington National Cemetery will have new transportation options in time for the National Cherry Blossom Festival. A new shuttle and tour service will begin operating Monday at Arlington National Cemetery, the National Park Service said. The new shuttle, which covers just the cemetery, costs $8.75 per person.

For the National Mall, a new express bus service will begin operating March 12. It will run in a loop from Union Station to the World War II Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery, the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial and the Smithsonian Metro station. The cost is $5 per boarding. During the Cherry Blossom Festival events, there will also be a $1 shuttle bus from the Mall to see the trees on Hains Point. “Our visitors have told us that they want different ways of getting from place to place,” said Steve Whitesell, the regional director for the National Park Service.

A National Park Service shuttle will replace the defunct Tourmobile.

The change comes after Tourmobile stopped operating last fall after 42 years of providing $32 tours. (AP)

The family foundation of a Washington developer is announcing a $1 million gift to help restore the National Mall’s grounds and facilities. The nonprofit Trust for the National Mall announced the gift Monday from the Akridge Family Foundation. John “Chip” Akridge is founder and chairman of the fundraising effort for the Mall. Caroline Cunningham, president of the Trust for the National Mall, says this is the first million-dollar gift for the effort. Akridge began working to establish the fundraising organization to support the National Mall in 2001. (AP)

Our first PEEPS® DIORAMA CONTEST in April 2007 struck the hearts, minds and funny bones of our newsroom, the city and the nation. Since then, it’s become an annual tradition, growing bigger every year. And it’s that time once again. To participate, make a diorama of a famous occurrence or scene. It can be a historic, current or future event, or it can be a nod to pop culture. The one rule is that all characters in the diorama must be played by Peeps.

Diorama photos due Feb. 27!

GHI If you don’t get it, you don’t get it.

THE PROCESS: • Photo submissions are due by Monday, Feb. 27, at 11:59 p.m., but keep your masterpiece intact after submission. • We’ll choose five finalists based on originality and execution. Those dioramas will be picked up via courier and professionally photographed. • The grand-prize winner will receive a $100 American Express gift check and a Peeps prize pack courtesy of Peeps & Company. Four runners-up will each receive a $50 American Express gift check and a Peeps prize pack.

Photos of the semi-finalists, finalists and winner will appear in The Washington Post Magazine on Sunday, April 1. For inspiration, view last year’s finalists at www.washingtonpost.com/peeps

www.marshmallowpeeps.com No purchase necessary. Contest is open to anyone in the United States, but the five finalists must be residents of the District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia. Contestants must be 13 years of age or older to enter. If you are under 13, please have a parent, guardian or teacher submit your entry. One entry per person. Employees of The Washington Post or their immediate families are not eligible to enter. For complete rules, see www.washingtonpost.com/postfun.

• Think of a scene. Possible extra credit may be given to those who deftly employ puns in their diorama concept or title. • Make your diorama using a shoe box or comparable item of reasonable size. To be eligible for finalist standing, the diorama must be transportable to our office by one person. • Take photos of your diorama from several angles. Then, go to washingtonpost.com/peeps to upload no more than two photos. Your pictures must be in jpeg format. You will also be asked to provide: • Your name, age and home town. • The names, ages and home towns of anybody who contributed to the diorama. • A phone number and e-mail address (not for publication). • The title of your diorama and a blurb about its creation or significance.

Brown Wants Council To Clean Up Its Language

A Maryland state senator says his chamber could take a final vote on legislation to legalize gay marriage later this week. Sen. Brian Frosh said the Judicial Proceedings Committee is expected to vote Tuesday on a bill passed by the House of Delegates last week that would allow same-sex couples to marry. (AP)

Last week’s shouting match between D.C. Council members Marion Barry and David Catania has prompted a measure to make the council clean up it s l anguage. Council Chairman Kwame R. Brown told The Washington Post that he wants to enact a code of conduct that will Brown bar members from using “profane, indecent or abusive language” in a public meeting. Brown says the chairman could remove a member from a meeting after a warning about inappropriate language. (AP)

The Art of Haggling F[hiedWb <_dWdY[ We’re conditioned to wait for the sale, not ask for it — and sadly, we might be missing opportunities for deals. The art of haggling, which some still equate with yard sales or farmers markets, isn’t often used in our big-box world, where sales are fixed with clearance tags. But haggling is an invaluable skill. When used correctly, it can help you

score bargains at supermarkets and hotels, and even prevent fines or penalties on credit card bills. Experts gave us tips on how to start haggling, and whether getting 10 percent off at a spa or a free upgrade on a plane, the adage rings true: Ask and you shall receive.

Haggling can save you money on fines. Noting your loyalty — on things such as credit card overdraft fees and library fines — can save you from paying penalties.

Are you buying a large quantity? Are you a regular customer? “Never stop with one ask,” Gault said. “Always follow up with another, ‘Well, what if I get two?’”

UMd. takes a hard line on scheduling any more games against Georgetown 9ebb[][ Ifehji Rebuffed in his efforts to restart Mar yland’s men’s basketball rivalry with Georgetown, Terrapins Athletic Director Kevin Anderson has decided against scheduling games against t he Hoyas in all sports until the impasse is resolved. Mar yland issued no news release about the policy change, which was made behind closed doors more than a month ago in concert with all the school’s head coaches, according to Anderson. And Maryland apparently hasn’t officially informed Georgetown of its new stance, which means the budding rivalry between the Washington area’s dominant women’s basketball teams will come to a halt. It also puts on hold further crosstown clashes between Maryland and Georgetown in lacrosse and soccer starting next

season — among the half-dozen varsity teams that met (or will meet) this season. “We think that across the board, if we’re going to play people — particularly somebody in our own region — they should be able and willing to play us in everything,” Anderson said in a telephone interview. “If we could sit down and talk about it, and have a good dialogue, we’re more than happy to pursue other avenues. But we want to play Georgetown in all sports.” Georgetown Athletic Director Lee Reed was not made available to comment. Said Mike “Mex” Carey, the Hoyas’ sports information director: “We do not make a habit

8WYaijeho Maryland and Georgetown last met in the Old Spice Classic in November 2008, above, with Georgetown scoring a 75-48 rout. They also met in the 2001 NCAA Tournament’s round of 16, with Maryland winning. But their last scheduled regular season game was in 1993. According to Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson, he broached the subject of resuming the series with Georgetown athletic director Lee Reed over lunch in spring 2011, and Reed indicated interest. Once news leaked that the rivalry might be restarted, Reed said publicly that it was “inappropriate to prematurely blow this out of proportion.” According to Anderson, that was the last time the two discussed the matter. “B o t h t e a m s [ M a r y l a n d and Georgetown] have a great basketball history,” Anderson said. “We’re both right there [in the Washington area]. Everybody benefits in this. I can’t see any kind of losing scenario.” Georgetown partisans are likely to view the move as heavy-handed: an example of clumsy diplomacy that costs student-athletes, above all, the chance to compete against a crosstown foe. But it has the full support of Maryland’s women’s basketball coach Brenda Frese, whose Terps avenged two losses to Georgetown last season with a 72-53 victory in November. The teams met in last season’s NCAA Tournament, with the Hoyas dismantling the Terrapins on their home court at Comcast Center to advance to the Sweet 16. Frese said she and her fellow coaches all agreed that “it makes absolute sense” to stop scheduling Georgetown until the conflict over men’s basketball is resolved. LIZ CLARKE (THE WASHINGTON POST )

of commenting on the scheduling practices of other schools.” The decision reflects mounting frustration on Anderson’s part in trying to schedule a home-andhome men’s basketball series with Georgetown — a move he feels would be good for both universities’ fans and bottom lines. The controversial step will likely be seen as bold by Maryland partisans: evidence Anderson is using all means at his disposal to restore Terrapins athletics to solvency.

Mostly Unnoticed Heat on a Roll

Miami leads league without any buzz at season’s midpoint Fhe 8Wia[jXWbb

Dwyane Wade finished his workout Monday and approached about a dozen reporters, one of the smallest media turnouts at a Miami Heat practice this season. These days, the team with the NBA’s best record almost seems like an afterthought. “If it was packed in here right now, it would mean we were losing,” Wade said.

A Doctor A Lawyer A Nurse An Engineer

>ej I^eji Miami’s numbers of late, including this six-game win streak, are flirting with absurd. Dwyane Wade has connected on at least half his shots in 10-straight games, his longest run since his rookie season, when he did so 11-straight times. The Heat is shooting 49.2 percent over its last six games (second to only Oklahoma City) and held teams to an NBA-best 39.3 percent from the floor in that span. (AP)

And that isn’t the case. Winner of six straight, all by at least 12 points, the Heat is in its best stretch of the season. The midpoint of the regular-season schedule awaits Tuesday when Miami (25-7) hosts Sacramento

(10-21), losers of five straight. Here’s an example of how wildly different things have gone for those clubs: Miami has led by at least 20 points in each of its last six games, while the Kings enjoyed that margin only once

this season — for 37 seconds. And already in Miami — to the team’s chagrin — there’s no shortage of talk about Thursday night’s home game against Jeremy Lin and the New York Knicks. As Linsanity reigns, other such NBA story lines as the Heat’s passing Chicago for the NBA’s best record, San Antonio’s taking a 10-game winning streak into its game Monday night, even the looming All-Star weekend seem almost forgotten. “Let everybody else get the headlines right now and just play Miami Heat basketball,” Heat forward LeBron James said. With New Striker, United Scores Big Signing Salihi gives D.C. a boost before the season begins CW`eh B[W]k[ IeYY[h After a couple of weeks of buildup following his signing, D.C. United striker Hamdi Salihi has arrived in the nation’s capital, hoping to deliver just like he has after the buildups on the attacking end of the field throughout his career. Salihi, United’s latest designated player, participated in his first practice with his new teammates on Monday after finalizing the visa process and arriving in D.C. on Saturday, earning strong reviews from his teammates and coaches. “It’s an important piece for us,” D.C. coach Ben Olsen said. “Very rarely do we sign someone of this quality and this pedigree.” Signing Salihi is considered a major coup for United, which is getting a 28-year-old forward at the top of his game. In three seasons at Rapid Vienna, Salihi scored 53 goals in 90 games. Out of contract with Rapid Vienna in July, Salihi had a number of offers elsewhere in Europe, where the transfer window closed at the end of January. The most serious offers came from the two powers in Scotland, Rangers and Celtic, but the recent financial problems that forced Rangers into bankruptcy helped steer him in a different direction.

After months of negotiations, D.C. United and reigning MLS MVP Dwayne De Rosario agreed to a new contract on Monday, one that will make De Rosario the club’s highest-paid player. De Rosario caught fire after joining D.C. last June, scoring 13 goals and accounting for seven assists in 18 games. He finished the season with 16 goals across time with D.C., Toronto and New York, and won the MLS Golden Boot. A.C.

“In the last month I had a lot of possibilities and offers, but always in my career I try to choose which team is giving me more respect and has respect for what I do on the pitch,” said Salihi, who is a member of the Albanian national team. “With everything I calculated in my head, D.C. was the best opportunity.” While the expectations on Salihi are high, Olsen is preaching patience. Salihi will have about three weeks to get integrated with his new teammates ahead of the March 10 season opener. “Anytime someone comes to a new league, you have to figure it out a little bit,” Olsen said. “There’s always that process of feeling it out. ... This next two to three weeks is very crucial for us as a group to get on the same page.” AVI CREDITOR

“I’m the unhealthiest person,” 48-year-old Andrea Thimm proclaimed during a visit to Hawthorne Homemade last week. But her presence at the new rustic market and juice bar near her house in Cleveland Park is an attempt to change that. Her order that day: “Glowing Skin,” a chuggable combo of carrot, kale, apple, parsley and ginger. Thimm’s only just picked up her juice habit, but she’s already seeing results. “It’s given me natural energy to get through the late afternoon,” she says. “I feel the effects immediately.” So if you see a higher percentage of Washingtonians walking around with extra vim and vigor, blame the veggies. The District had been thirsty for juice options for years, and now, suddenly, there’s a cornucopia. Hawthorne (3706 Macomb St. NW; 202-248-2374, Hawthornemarket.com) started slinging juice last month. December marked the openings of both Puree Artisan Juice Bar (4903 Elm St., Bethesda; 301-654-7873, Pureejuicebar.com), a sleek hangout that caters to the Equinox Fitness crowd, and Khepra’s Raw Food Juice Bar (402 H St. NE; 202-489-8476, Chefkhepra.com), a takeout spot tucked away at the back of an African-themed health products store. But every year, he’s seen interest grow, and since being closed in January for the renovations, he’s been bombarded with calls from customers looking for a fix. He’s hoping that the simultaneous arrival of all of these new places means grabbing a carrot concoction won’t be so hard anymore. All of the establishments praise the healing properties of their menus

— the phrase “liquid vitamins” gets thrown around a lot — but each has a twist on the juice bar concept. Khepra Anu’s obsession is his homemade coconut water, which is the base of each of his juices. (His Raw Food Juice Bar goes through 700 coconuts a week.) Puree emphasizes its premium, organic ingredients. Those green shots aren’t just wheatgrass, but “the best wheatgrass in the country,” says chef Steve Mekoski, a Culinary Institute of America grad who’s particularly proud of his handcrafted almond milk, made with alkaline water and sweetened with dates and vanilla bean. That’s what’s called a cleanse, a holistic health practice that’s been glamorized by celebs who use liquid diets to prepare for the red carpet. The benefits go beyond weight loss, says Khepra Anu, who’s been running his weeklong Mojo Juice Detox ($295) since 2005. (The next one starts March 18.) By giving your body a vacation from breaking down what you eat, it can focus on rebuilding, he says. “After a cleanse, you’ll feel light and energized,” adds Joanna Hawthorne, who suggests her regimen ($150) to nearly everyone who walks into Hawthorne Homemade. It’s a three-day supply of eight juices per day, plus a raw meal on the fourth day to help you transition. (Or, you can commit to drinking four juices a day and supplement with unprocessed, vegan foods as needed for $75.) Puree offers two set cleanses ($65 one day, $180 three days). The difference? The second level features more green juices. You have to develop a taste for those, but owner Amy Waldman says it’s eventually easy being green.

She criticizes her weight, her intelligence, her hair, etc. I’m tired of it, honestly, and if I keep telling her “Babe, you look great,” then it doesn’t seem to help. So I just don’t say anything, which angers her. ANNOYED I’d help you, but I’m just so horrible at giving advice! It sounds like you get that your girlfriend seems to have some selfesteem issues. bothers me when you make negative comments about yourself — you know I don’t agree with them. But I feel like the more I speak up, the worse it gets.” Then listen. If you help her become aware, in the moment, of what she’s saying, she can finally start to turn it off — doing both of you a huge favor.

My relationship with my husband is on the rocks, and we’re considering separation. I’ve had an extremely conflicted relationship with his daughter from a previous marriage, who’s 16 with many behavioral problems. If we do separate, I want to move to California. My husband feels betrayed by this and thinks I’m abandoning this girl. I admit that if we had a closer relationship, I would feel more of a pull to stay. But, honestly, not having the stress is very appealing. Does this make me a bad person? ALWAYS A STEPMOM?

You don’t need a psychologist to assess whether you’re a bad person. I think you realize how this looks to others, and you’re seeking justification to do it. I find it interesting you never referred to her as your stepdaughter, and I wonder whether you truly made a commitment to her when you married her dad. Like it or not, she’s part of your family. And she’s 16 and troubled. Stay in the area, at least for now. It’s a sacrifice, but part of her problems may stem from the fact that she never thought she mattered much. A last-ditch effort to prove to her that isn’t true could go a long way — and help your conscience.

Then, you’ll “arrive” at the Pilates studio. So it’s time to hop off your bike and onto the Reformer. Cel[i0 The Spinning segment includes a warm-up, hill climbs and sprints. Since Presley’s training is rooted in posture-centric Pilates, expect to focus on correct alignment. “Keep your shoulders back but not stiff,” she tells one student. “You want to stabilize your core and back, but don’t go rigid.”

Mind-body devotees often slack off when it comes to cardio, says Timea Presley, head Pilates instructor at Mint Fitness. So when Mint added a cycling studio earlier this month, she took the opportunity to launch Spinlates, a class combining revolutions and the Reformer.

Presley then guides students through a series of stretch-andstrength combos on the Reformer, including Hundreds (ab pulses with legs extended at an obtuse angle); triceps presses using weighted cables; and Elephants, sort of like downward dogs in which you push backward with your heels on the spring-loaded base.

9^eh[e]hWf^_d] 7 M_bZ ;l[d_d] Laurent Amzallag promises his fans an exercise experience Of all of the reasons for throwing a party, it’s hard to beat Laurent Amzallag’s. “I’ve been shaking my booty for 10 years in the nation’s capital,” says Amzallag, known for his French accent, his tight shirts and his fitness program, YaLa, which sneaks a total-body workout into an hour of dancing. To mark a decade of these derriere-defining moves, he’s hosting Hot YaLa Nights ($10, $15 at the door; Yalafitness.com) on Saturday. It’s the first of a series of events designed to transform his popular class into a completely immersive experience — and raise money for Children’s National Medical Center. The event will include an appearance by Johnny Wright (aka Michelle Obama’s hairstylist); parkour performers from Urban Evolution; massages courtesy of Noxicare; and, thanks to sponsor Popchips, lots of crunchy snacks. That’s in addition to a Lululemon fashion show. “They’re probably going to ask me to strut my thing,” Amzallag says. Add a nightclub setting at 700 Water St. SW — the former home

of Zanzibar on the Waterfront — and spectacular lighting, and participants won’t be able to help but get in the mood. “It’ll be like going to a concert, but participating,” he says. (He picked 5 to 7 p.m., however, so folks could bring kids. No alcohol will be served.) Come dressed to exercise. You’ll appreciate it when you’ve jumped side to side for the 100th time. Those hops are one of Amzallag’s signature moves, a plyometric exercise disguised as dance choreography. The precursor to YaLa was a regular conditioning class that Amzallag interrupted with short dances to provide cardio bursts. When students demanded more dancing, he realized he needed to incorporate some strength builders into his routines. By lifting the arms, adding in twisting motions and doing “sexy squats,” he’s managed to completely merge the two concepts. His classes (at The Sports Club/ LA and other venues in town) are already high-energy affairs, but with Hot YaLa Nights, Amzallag’s aiming higher. “I want to not only get results physically, but also mentally. I want people to be happier and walk out with a big smile on their faces,” he says. And, of course, shaking their booties. VICK Y HALLET T (E XPRESS)

Your iPad could be causing you serious pain — and not just in the form of repeated Words with Friends defeats. If you ever look up from your tablet computer and notice sharp pain in your neck and shoulders, your form is probably wrong, according to a new study in the journal Work. Researchers measured people’s head and neck postures as they used two tablets (an iPad2 and a Motorola Zoom) in four different configurations, and here’s what they found: Having a tablet in your lap increases your head and neck flexion, because you have to look down while reading. And having a tablet propped up on a table helps, but only at steeper viewing angles, where your flexion stays neutral. So it turns out that computing on your lap is a major strain — but isn’t that also how we usually read books? “Yes, we like to have books at angles to optimize viewing angles, but tablets are harder to hold than books because of the active screen,” says lead investigator Jack Dennerlein, Ph.D., ergonomics and safety lecturer at the

As Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton is engaged in the most important work of her career, while Bill Clinton prefers a superhero’s schedule, in constant transit to a crisis or a speaking engagement. It would be tempting to report that “Clinton” lacks fresh news, except that I consider the death of the ’90s to be fresh — even fascinating — news. For the first time, the ’90s appear to be as old as the hills, stripped of any remaining “I Love the ’90s” fizz. “Clinton” makes the decade look bleak and practically sepia-toned. Most of the ups and downs of Bill Clinton’s life are covered in a PBS documentary.

Part 2, “The Survivor,” — airing tonight — feels much more like an American history class assignment that has been hurried along, covering the second term with an emphasis on its dark clouds. This structure makes perfect sense, but it also lacks the thematic and artistic flair that a viewer is entitled to on a four-hour documentary investment. The film does work as an indulgent bit of nostalgia for those who still pine for the Clinton years. Who wouldn’t want the budget surpluses and robust economic recovery? It’s a wonder to think about now. Even still, that bit of fantasizing can last a viewer only so long. HANK STUEVER

Growing older and still loving punk rock aren’t mutually exclusive conditions. But at some point, the admiration usually shifts to listening in the privacy of your home or office cube; a mature person can’t be going out to shows all the time. But vocalist Carlos Izurieta and his bandmates in the local group Police & Thieves have not only managed to enter their 30s with their punk ideals intact; they support the scene they adore 8o 9^h_ijef^[h by constantly going Fehj[h to concerts as fans as well as playing at them. With that enthusiastic spirit, it’s not surprising that Police & Thieves’ recent miniLP, “Fracturing,” is on a label called Youngblood Records. While Police & Thieves’ character is youthful, the band’s music is seasoned, recalling the mid-’80s heyday of D.C.’s influential Dischord Records label. The group makes vintage, ripping hardcore that’s equal parts catchy and powerful, pent-up and cathartic. Put simply, it’s timeless. Just like punk.

You can almost hear the crackle and hiss of an AOL dial-up. Written and directed by Barak Goodman, “Clinton” bisects itself cleanly into two parts: “The Comeback Kid” — which aired Monday night — covers childhood through Clington’s first term as president.

Bayou’s Mardi Gras party is wall-to-wall music and wall-to-wall food — the buffet is all-you-can-eat, and the live New Orleans-style music will be playing nonstop on Tuesday. Throughout the day, you can hear jazz, brass band and soul music, making this normally loud bar deafening (in a good way). Bayou, 2519 Pennsylvania Ave. NW; noon, $25; 202-2236941, Bayouonpenn.com. Plump Tuesday If you’re old enough that Mardi Gras is no longer a pleasant excuse to dance on a table with a stranger while taking shots of mysterious green liquids, try Acadiana’s staid yet tasty four-course menu of New Orleans staples in honor of the holiday (jambalaya, crawfish, etc) on Tuesday. If four courses is too much for you, just hit up the happy hour — $5 hurricanes and Southern bar food become available starting at 3:30 p.m. Acadiana, 901 New York Ave. NW; 5:30 p.m., prix fixe menu $45; 202-4088848, Acadianarestaurant.com. When Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen first started working together on the IFC sketch show “Portlandia,” they were flying blind. Their experimentation lent a nutty flavor to the breakout show, which lovingly ridicules the hipster culture of Portland, Ore. When it got picked up for a second season, the pair knew they had to keep things strange to keep things fresh. Brownstein (formerly of Sleater-Kinney) and Armisen are trying something unexpected: They’re taking “Portlandia” on the road. (They’ll do two sold-out shows at the 9:30 Club tonight.) True to form, Armisen says that turning the TV show into a live stage extravaganza wasn’t something they planned much in advance. “We thought, ‘We’ll show some videos; we’ll talk a little bit,’” he says. “By the second show, we knew what it was.” So, what is it, exactly? “Portlandia” live is an amalgam of Q&As, character homages and music — which both of them have backgrounds in.

“I never get to play the bass,” says Armisen, who played drums in the ’90s post-hardcore band Trenchmouth. “The live shows are a great excuse to play the bass.” But, he insists, he’s not trying to pull a career switch. “I’m happily a comedian.”

ÇDe ed[ mWdji je i[[ W Yec[Z_Wd jkhd j^Wj Yehd[h WdZ iWo" É>[o" jWa[ c[ i[h_ekibo$ÊÈ — FRED A RMISEN, WHO SAY HE’S NOT SWITCHING FROM COMEDY TO MUSIC.

Armisen says “Portlandia” translates well to the stage in part because it was born out of a mutual respect and trust in the unpredictable process of improv. “It’s a blank slate, just the two of us trying to come up with what will work best for what we do,” he says. “And no one comes out ahead, no one feels like they have to fix things. It’s a weird socialist democracy.” Just like Portland! “Exactly,” he says. FIONA ZUBLIN (E XPRESS) 9:30 Club, 815 V St. NW; Tue., 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., sold out; 202-265-0930, 930.com. (U Street)

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You will be afforded a kind of recap today that lets you assess what has passed — and in a valuable new way. ARIES (March 21-April 19) Emotional and economic forces combine today to bring certain personal issues to a head. A question of profit causes some conflict. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) A contest between two forces will likely suck you into a situation that you had little to do with at first. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You may be able to observe things today from a safe distance — but you won’t be so far that you miss the important details.

Friday’s Solution

CANCER (June 21-July 22) A fairminded approach will allow you to see things in a way that you hadn’t really considered before. An open mind is a healthy mind. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You’ll be afforded a look at a situation today through another’s eyes. You’ll benefit even if you don’t agree with what you learn.

Friday’s Solution

<EKH H79A JEJ7B Make a 2-7 letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. 7-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) What occurs behind the scenes today is likely to be more significant by day’s end than anything that transpires out in the open. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) A more modern approach may escape you today, but you’ll be effective if you trust those methods that have worked for you in the past.

9ec_Yi

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You may be drawn to someone who is up to no good today — but in the end, you’ll be in little danger of crossing the line. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You will find it easy to assign reasons to the day’s events after the fact — but it won’t be so simple while you’re in the midst of everything.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You may want to keep to yourself throughout much of the day, and yet the social scene presents one or two irresistible attractions.
