People who eat lots of them don’t take lobster legs lightly

Flyers can handle turbulence.

But flatulence? Not so much.

The organization that controls the release of emojis has added two more legs to the lobster to make it accurate. Soon after the Unicode Consortium released proposed images of 157 new emojis to be made available this year, Maine residents took umbrage at the lobster emoji’s eight legs instead of the correct 10. The Emojipedia blog said Monday that the consortium will release new designs for the lobster, skateboard and DNA emojis. (AP)

A pilot for Transavia Airlines of the Netherlands was forced to make an emergency landing in Vienna recently after a fight broke out over a passenger’s uncontrolled flatulence during a flight from the United Arab Emirates to Amsterdam.

Metro of Britain said the “unashamed man” refused to control his gas, which started a brawl. The pilot asked police in Vienna to remove four passengers who had gone “on the rampage.” (EXPRESS)

On dockless bikes: Thoughtful parking makes a difference accustomed to navigating a certain route, do haphazardly parked bikes pose a hazard?

The activists for the visually impaired I spoke to told me they have not had an upswing of complaints about bumping into bikes. But it is something they will be keeping tabs on.

Jocelyn Hunter of the Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind said her organization has not received reports of clients walking into parked bikesharing bicycles. They’re more concerned, she said, with bikes that are moving, not stationary.

To their credit, the bikesharing companies seem to understand that no one wants a big pile of bikes. LimeBike’s website includes “Parking Do’s and Don’ts,” with instructions not to park at bus stops or street corners, and not to block wheelchair paths and crosswalks.

Last year, dockless bikesharing bicycles really started to explode around Washington.

I have a couple of reactions to these brightly colored metal steeds. On one hand, I’m probike. I wish Washington had a proper cycling infrastructure.

On the other hand, the rental bikes often seem to be scattered about the city in clumps: a phalanx of bikes accreting outside a Metro station, on a street corner, in a park. But it made me wonder: What about blind people? If they’re

Head of D.C. schools resigns amid scandal THE DISTRICT D.C. Public Schools Chancellor Antwan Wilson, appointed last year with a mandate to close the city’s persistent achievement gap, resigned Tuesday amid revelations he skirted the city’s competitive lottery system so his daughter could transfer into a sought-after high school, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced Tuesday.

His one-year, 19-day tenure sends another jolt through a beleaguered school system already engulfed in a graduation scandal.

Deputy Mayor for Education Jennifer Niles stepped down Friday over the lottery controversy, leaving the city without two of its top education officials.

Bowser said she asked for Wilson’s resignation.

Amanda Alexander, the school system’s chief of elementary schools, was named the interim chancellor, according to the government officials. She served as a deputy chief of schools under Wilson’s predecessor, Kaya Henderson.

School names 1st female head in 325 years William & Mary has named a woman to lead the university for the first time in its 325-year history. The school in Williamsburg, Va., said in a statement Tuesday that Smith College provost Katherine Rowe will become its 28th president.

She will replace W. Taylor Reveley III, who is retiring this summer after 10 years.

Rowe has served as provost and dean of the faculty at Smith since 2014, working as its chief academic officer.

Her areas of research and scholarship include Shakespeare as well as medieval and Renaissance drama and media history.

Maryland lawmakers want to boost penalties for murder-for-hire crimes

A Maryland Transit Administration report says the agency knew Baltimore Metro’s subway rails didn’t meet safety standards in 2016, more than a year before it declared an emergency shutdown. The Baltimore Sun cites a 2018 MTA report that said 17 of the Metro’s turns were found in a November 2016 geometric evaluation to be “deteriorated to the point where no train movement is allowed.” The shutdown, declared last week, is expected to last until March 11.

Former delegate’s trial begins in bribery case The trial of a former Maryland state delegate charged with bribery began Tuesday with his lawyer insisting that his client accepted bundles of money believing they were campaign donations, not bribes. Michael Lynn Vaughn, a Democrat from Bowie, was charged last year with bribery and conspiracy.

Deputy recovering after being stabbed on duty Authorities say a sheriff’s deputy was stabbed while answering a distress call in College Park, Md. Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Sharon Taylor said the deputy was taken to a hospital and is doing well after being stabbed early Monday morning. The deputy also suffered a broken jaw and a couple of fractures. Taylor says an arrest was not made, but a person was taken into custody to receive psychiatric services, as is customary in such calls. (AP)

MONTGOMERY COUNTY Police in Maryland found an AR15 assault-style rifle, handguns, tactical vests, inert grenades and a possible detonator device in the home of an 18-year-old honor roll student who last week brought a loaded handgun to school, authorities revealed in court Tuesday.

Officers also discovered that the suspect — Alwin Chen, a student at Clarksburg High School in Montgomery County — had previously brought a gun to school and had compiled a “list of grievances against students in the school,” Montgomery Assistant State’s Attorney Frank Lazzaro said.

He termed the list “possibly a motive for why he was going to use the gun.” Chen’s precise motive and overall thinking remained unclear Tuesday. Detectives and prosecutors continue to investigate the case.

Given the weapons cache at his Germantown home, the accusation he has brought a gun to school at least twice, and the purported grievance list, Montgomery District Judge John Moffett ordered Chen held in jail without an opportunity to post bond.

He “then told the police he had brought the gun to school for protection because students at the school had been harassing him and bullying him,” Lazzaro said.

“In this day and age,” added Montgomery’s top prosecutor, John McCarthy, “there’s got to be zero tolerance on the acceptability of bringing a loaded handgun onto school property.”

An employee at the U.S. Agriculture Department claims she was offered a promotion in exchange for sex.

Public disclosure: USDA staffer says she was harassed The event at the Agriculture Department’s head office started like many others honoring Black History Month, but no one imagined how it would end.

Rosetta Davis was among the employees in the audience Thursday. During a lull in the program, which employees said was televised to department facilities across the country, she unexpectedly took the stage and told her colleagues, in emotional terms and with specifics, how she had been sexually harassed on the job.

She described how a supervisor, whom she named, offered to give her a promotion to grade GS-13 in exchange for sex.

The supervisor and others are named in a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. She alleges USDA managers retaliated against her because of her equal employment opportunity activities and her involvement in an investigation of whistleblower complaints about the department’s office of civil rights.

Davis, a 53-year-old AfricanAmerican District resident who joined the department in 2001, acknowledged she submitted to the supervisor’s advances in

hopes of getting promoted. “I agreed to the sex,” she said in an interview.

The same day of the program, she received a letter placing her on paid administrative leave. She was made a pariah and told not to use any agency facilities. Curiously, the letter indicates she was not placed on leave because of what she did but, apparently, because of what she might do.

“This action is not a disciplinary action, rather is taken as a precautionary measure pending further review of occurrences in the workplace on February 15, 2018,” said the letter from Thomas A. Mulhern, USDA’s director of human resources.

The notion that the leave is not a disciplinary action is “a joke,” said Yaida Ford, Davis’ lawyer.

During the program, Davis said she pleaded for help.

Choking up as she spoke during a telephone interview, Davis added that she saw people, including those she named,

holding their heads in their hands as she spoke. “I said, ‘Don’t hide your faces now.’ ” USDA declined to comment on the “occurrence” or to make available the supervisor Davis said she had sex with.

“She was kind of dramatic,” said one employee who attended the program. Fearing management retaliation, the staffer declined to be identified.

Her presentation left the audience “shell-shocked,” the employee said. “It was something you would not imagine in a setting like this.” Several women went to comfort her, but the audience could still hear her shouting as she was led backstage.

Davis said she stopped the relationship after eight months.

“Immediately after ending it, she became the target of aggressive sexual harassment and brutal retaliation,” the lawsuit says. “She never received the promotion.”

Congress still needs to agree on pay freezes Q. Is a pay freeze a done deal or is there still a chance for a raise next year?

A. President Trump’s budgetary proposal last week recommended no federal employee raise for January 2019. That is only a proposal, and Congress would have to agree; some members have proposed a 3 percent raise.

However, Congress has deferred to the White House on raises in recent years. By staying silent, it has allowed recommended boosts in the 1 percent to 2 percent range for the last five years. Before that, there was a three-year freeze from 2011 to 2013.

During that time, employees in the largest pay system, the General Schedule, continued to receive within-grade raises — which are paid every one, two or three years to those performing acceptably. But such raises — worth about 3 percent of your salary — stop when an employee reaches the top of a pay grade.

Also, some government pay systems don’t include them.

Whether those raises would again be allowed in a new freeze would have to be determined.

Separately, the White House has proposed lengthening the waiting times between those raises, without giving specifics.

Employees remained eligible for raises on promotion during the last freeze, and presumably that would be the case again.

Trump calls for a ban on bump stocks

POLITICS President Trump said Tuesday that he has signed a memo directing the Justice Department to propose regulations to “ban all devices” like the rapid-fire bump stocks involved in last year’s Las Vegas massacre.

Seeking to show action days after a school shooting that killed 17 people in Parkland, Fla., Trump spoke during a White House ceremony recognizing bravery by the nation’s public safety officers.

“I expect that these critical regulations will be finalized ... very soon,” the president said Tuesday. “The key in all of these efforts ... is that we cannot merely take actions that make us feel like we are making a difference. We must actually make a difference. We must move past cliches and tired debates and focus on evidence-based solutions and security measures that actually work.”

The device Trump referred to was used in the October shooting deaths of 58 people in Las Vegas, and attached to a halfdozen of the long guns found in the shooter’s hotel room.

Trump has also indicated he is open to a limited strengthening of federal background checks on gun purchases.

Over the weekend, the White House said he had spoken Friday to Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, about a bipartisan bill designed to strengthen the FBI database of prohibited gun buyers.

The bipartisan background check legislation would be aimed at ensuring that federal agencies and states accurately report relevant criminal information to the FBI. It was introduced after the Air Force failed to report the criminal history of the gunman who slaughtered more than two dozen people at a Texas church.

Previous gun tragedies have not led Congress to act. After the Las Vegas massacre in the fall, Republicans and Democrats in Congress talked about taking a rare step to tighten the nation’s gun laws. But four months later, the only gun legislation that has moved through Congress is a bill the House passed in December to ease restrictions for gun owners to carry concealed weapons across state lines.

Transgender woman is able to breast-feed A 30-year-old transgender woman told her doctors she wanted to breast-feed her baby. The situation arose, she explained, because her partner was pregnant but didn’t plan to breast-feed their infant.

After months of hormone therapy in 2017, the doctors say their patient might be the first reported transgender woman in academic literature to breastfeed, according to a case study last month in the peer-reviewed journal Transgender Health.

“We want to present our patients with the full range of reproductive choices, and this is one step closer to that,” said study co-author Tamar Reisman, an endocrinologist at the Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.

The patient, who had not had gender reassignment surgeries, began the hormone regimen and other treatments. After a month, she was producing “droplets” of milk. Three months in, she was producing about 8 ounces of milk per day, according to the study.

After the baby was born, the patient breast-fed for six weeks.

The baby’s pediatrician said the child’s growth, feeding and bowel habits were appropriate.

The baby later was given formula to supplement the breast-feeding.

Ohio seventh-grader brings gun to school, shoots himself inside restroom

DAMASCUS, SYRIA Government forces bombed the northeastern suburbs of the Syrian capital for a second straight day Tuesday, killing more than 100 people and raising the specter of a full-scale offensive that could spell catastrophe for the nearly 400,000 residents trapped under siege.

Rescuers raced to reach survivors in the devastated suburbs known as eastern Ghouta as warplanes and helicopter gunships circled overhead, bombing hospitals, apartment blocks, markets and other civilian targets.

The suburbs are the last major stronghold for rebels in the area.

At least 250 civilians were killed during the 48 hours of unrelenting onslaught that began Monday, including 58 children, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group. Another 1,000 people were wounded, it said. Rescuers and paramedics called it some of the deadliest bombardment of the rebellious region in years.

The U.N. children’s agency, UNICEF, issued a one-page statement of protest against the killings and carried a headline that said: “Do those inflicting the suffering still have words to justify their barbaric acts?”

The headline was followed by a blank space underneath. UNICEF said, “We no longer have the words to describe children’s suffering and our outrage.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov appeared to endorse the unrestrained assault, which he said was backed by the Russian air force. “In keeping with the existing agreements, the fight against terrorism cannot be restricted by anything,” he said.

NORTH KOREA North Korea is quietly expanding the scope and sophistication of its cyberweaponry, laying the groundwork for more devastating attacks, according to a report published Tuesday.

Kim Jong Un’s cyberwarriors have been accused of causing huge disruption in recent years, including a massive hack on Sony Pictures in 2014 and last year’s WannaCry ransomware worm, as well as numerous attacks on South Korean servers.

Now it appears that North Korea has also been using previously unknown holes in the internet to carry out cyberespionage — the kind of activity that could easily metamorphose into full-scale attacks, according to a report from FireEye, a California-based cybersecurity company.

North Korea has funneled a huge amount of time and money into building a cyberarmy capable of outsmarting more technologically advanced countries such as South Korea.

“Our concern is that this could be used for a disruptive attack rather than a classic espionage mission, which we already know that the North Koreans are regularly carrying out,” said John Hultquist, director of intelligence analysis for FireEye. FireEye said it’s confident that a group called APT37 is responsible for attacks in Japan, Vietnam and the Middle East as well as South Korea. ANNA FIFELD

When a gunman killed 17 people at a Florida high school last week, youngsters around the globe watched the terrifying images and accounts unfold almost in real time. By the end of the day on Feb. 14, children with social media knew the name of the suspect, learned which classrooms the students were in and, in some cases, saw videos of the dead.

MEN’S BASKETBALL The Louisville men’s basketball program will vacate its 2013 national championship — the team’s third overall — and 2012 Final Four appearance after the NCAA on Tuesday upheld sanctions triggered by a sex scandal.

Louisville is the first men’s basketball program in modern NCAA history to vacate a national title.

The West Virginia Senate passed a bill Tuesday to legalize sports betting at the state’s five casinos in the event that a U.S. Supreme Court case leads to the repeal of a nationwide ban later this year. The bill was approved 25-9 and now moves to the House of Delegates, where a similar bill is pending.

With Tuesday’s free skate, the ShibSibs became the second set of siblings to win an Olympic ice dance medal, first in more than 25 years. Over the years they’ve heard the comments and concerns: Can siblings succeed in

this sport? Aren’t they precluded from steamier moments that send other pairs to the podium? With so many intense, intimate moments, is something just … off?

“That’s not fair to ice dance.

You’re probably hurting ice dance’s feelings,” Alex said. “Ice dance wants to be whatever it can be ... We’re siblings. We’re doing it the way we know how to do it.”

‘Traffic Stop’ captures a timely issue FILM REVIEW “Traffic Stop,” an upsetting yet faintly hopeful documentary directed by Kate Davis and produced by David Heilbroner (available now on HBO), is only 31 minutes long, zooming in with intense focus on the sort of encounter that is so common you can probably fill in the details yourself: A white Austin police officer briefly pursues a speeding vehicle being driven by a young African-American teacher on a June day in 2015.

With the original footage as its anchor, “Traffic Stop” (which is up for an Academy Award for best documentary short subject) shows a story that is poetically edited into an intimate slice of the biggest civil rights issue ue of our day, which is about what at our society has become and how w we treat one another. In this is case, what should have been a routine encounter has instead ad left a deep emotional wound. d.
