Pennsylvania state police say a seventh-grade student called 911 around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday to report he was inside Wendover Middle School in Hempfield Township. The student told authorities he had been sleepwalking and woke up inside the school. Police say the student entered the school through a window and wandered around for about 15 minutes. The student lives about 4 miles from the school. (AP)

The feeding habits of a Cooper’s hawk may fascinate bird-watchers, but employees of a New York bank are fed up with the feathery remnants of slaughtered pigeons. Authorities say a man destroyed a suburban Detroit home while trying to use a smoke bomb to rid a crawl space of skunks. The Detroit Free Press reports the man’s attempt sparked a fire Monday that quickly spread from the crawl space to the first floor. The fire eventually spread through the walls and attic of the rental property. The house was a complete loss — and no skunk carcasses were found. (AP)

Having three airports to choose from is great — until you show up at the wrong one REGION Amid the usual queries at the information counter at Reagan National Airport — Where’s the bathroom? Where’s the Cinnabon? — Leanne Omland gets a version of this whopper about once a day: Where’s my airport? It often falls to Omland to break the bad news to someone who has stumbled into the dark side of having three major airports serving one city: You are at the wrong one. “Their faces just fall,” said Omland, a Travelers Aid manager at National. “It happens every single day.” Having a super-abundance of airports is considered a big-city perk in Washington. But with greater choice comes a greater chance that you will find yourself at, say, National Airport while

your flight is boarding at one of the other two, Washington Dulles International or Baltimore-Washington International Marshall. It happens to all kinds of customers, according to the airport helpers, travel agents and taxi drivers who bear daily witness to these travel apocalypses — from hardcore business travelers to neophyte flyers for whom “the airport” is just the airport. Omland tries to let them down gently. She sees how much time they have and assesses the damage. Some passengers, particularly international travelers, allow so much lead time that they can make it to the right airport with leisure. Most don’t. “We have to be honest that you could be an hour and a half in traffic getting to Dulles,” she said.

YES, IT REALLY HAPPENS

Limo driver Zack Araya picked up a traveler last fall at a D.C. hotel for a pre-dawn trip to National. As they arrived, the man looked up from his phone and said, “What are we doing here? I’m flying out of Dulles,” Araya recalled. The man was frantic. His business was urgent. He begged Araya to floor it and promised to pay any tickets he got. Araya found his inner Steve McQueen. “I will only say — I never drove like that before or since,” he said. (Twenty-five minutes curb to curb. A personal best.) They made it to Dulles, and the man ran into the terminal. He called from the plane to say he had made it and how grateful he was. Araya caught his breath. And counted his $400 tip.

Online search engines are making the confusion worse. Shoppers using the airport code WAS often get a low-fare flight that sends them out via one airport and returns them to another. “We see people getting deals on the internet and having no idea that DCA and IAD are two different airports 35 miles apart,” Omland said. D.C. cabdrivers have learned to quiz their fares carefully before they commit to a route. Davit Zakaryan now gets the exact itinerary from his clients and checks it online. When passengers mistakenly say, “Take me to National” or “Pick me up at BWI,” he stops them. “In the last two or three years, I’m seeing it more and more,” said Zakaryan, the owner of

Metro financing deal gains steam TRANSPORTATION Maryland Del. Maggie L. McIntosh was stunned. The veteran lawmaker, who chairs the powerful House Appropriations Committee, had just heard nearly 90 minutes of testimony in which people were all on the same side. All favored giving Metro more state money. “I can’t believe there’s nobody opposing this bill,” McIntosh, DBaltimore City, said at a hearing in Annapolis last week. The unanimity was a sign of the political momentum in Maryland, Virginia and the District propelling what would be a landmark deal to provide permanent, dedicated funding for the

regional transit system. Metro revenue and governance bills enjoyed favorable receptions in three key committee hearings in Annapolis. Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican, is resisting some key provisions, but his team is in active negotiations with Democratic lawmakers in hope of achieving progress. In Richmond, both the full House and Senate passed separate bills that would give Metro earmarked funding. The District, which is strongly supportive of Metro, is expected to go along with whatever the states decide. Crucial details remain to be decided. There is no consensus on how much money Metro would

gaining a significant, guaranteed stream of revenue. Since its founding in 1967, the agency has been the only major transit system in the U.S. to lack such support. “The jurisdictions are aligning for the first time in 50 years,” said Maryland state Sen. Brian J. Feldman, D-Montgomery, chief

sponsor of one of the funding bills. Despite the optimism, significant hurdles remain. Perhaps the biggest is Hogan’s insistence on limiting the increased funding to four years. Both bills in Virginia, as well as the Democratic-backed ones in Maryland, call for permanent dedicated funding. Metro and its supporters say the distinction is important, because only a guaranteed stream of revenue will allow Metro to borrow on financial markets at favorable interest rates. Hogan, however, opposes an open-ended pledge of funds. “The governor’s plan is not a blank check,” spokesman Doug Mayer said. “He is not going to turn over unlimited funds to an agency that has been known more for its failures than its successes.” ROBERT McCARTNEY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

THE DISTRICT It was supposed to be a day like any other for Amanda Alexander. The District’s chief of elementary schools arrived at work with plans to visit two schools and meet with some of her deputies. But then Mayor Muriel Bowser summoned her in the morning with a startling question: Would she be willing to run the entire D.C. Public Schools system? Chancellor Antwan Wilson was being forced to resign, and Bowser needed someone immediately to take charge for the rest of the school year. Alexander accepted and, by late Tuesday afternoon, became interim chancellor of a system engulfed by two scandals, one involving graduation policy and the other the school lottery. “I was surprised because it wasn’t something I was expecting, but I am excited to make sure that we stay the course here,” Alexander said Wednesday. “I am very capable of keeping things in the right direction.” Educators who work with Alexander said she scrupulously studies school data and uses it to establish plans aimed at improving achievement.

“She has been c o n si s te nt ly working toward having strong instructional practices in all Alexander the classes, and she has strong expectations for all the boys and girls and holds people accountable,” said Mary Ann Stinson, principal of Truesdell Education Campus in D.C. Alexander said she has no plans for dramatic shake-ups, and is focused on leading the city to a smooth finish of the school year. But part of her mandate will include addressing the findings of a damning city-commissioned investigation released last month. The investigation discovered 1 in 3 graduates in 2017 missed too many classes or improperly took makeup classes, undermining the validity of hundreds of diplomas. The report also uncovered a culture of pressure in which teachers felt compelled to graduate unqualified students so that lofty graduation goals could be met. “My takeaway is that there were some systems and procedures that were lacking … and that’s the work that we are focused on now,” Alexander said. “I think [D.C. Public Schools] has a great culture, but that’s not to say there are not areas that need improvement.” PERRY STEIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

New charges brought against Manafort, Gates POLITICS In a dramatic escalation of pressure and stakes, special counsel Robert Mueller filed additional criminal charges Thursday against President Trump’s former campaign chairman and his business associate. The filing adds allegations of tax evasion and bank fraud and potentially increases the amount of prison time Paul Manafort, who managed Trump’s campaign for several months in 2016, and longtime associate Rick Gates could face if convicted at trial. The two men were initially charged in a 12-count indictment last October that accused them

of a multimillion-dollar moneylaundering conspiracy tied to their foreign lobbying work. The additional charges involve much of the same conduct Manafort and Gates were initially charged with, but they increase the amount of money Manafort is accused of laundering through offshore accounts to $30 million. The new indictment comes a week after Mueller filed charges

against 13 Russians, accusing them of a vast conspiracy to undermine the U.S. presidential election. The charges against Manafort and Gates don’t relate to any allegations of misconduct related to Trump’s campaign. It accuses Manafort and Gates of doctoring documents to inflate the income of their businesses and then using those fraudulent documents to obtain loans. It also accuses Manafort of evading taxes from 2010 through 2014, and in some of those years concealing his foreign bank accounts. Prosecutors said they had filed the charges in Virginia.

African migrants protest Israel’s new deportation policy

NEGEV DESERT, ISRAEL | African migrants march Thursday to Saharonim Prison, an Israeli detention facility, where at least nine have been jailed as part of a new policy of prison or deportation for African asylum-seekers. Israel has given tens of thousands of migrants until April 1 to return to countries in Africa or be jailed.

For the first time ever, scientists have the opportunity to research the structure of a supernova’s “shock breakout” phase — thanks to a self-taught astronomer from Argentina. As reported Wednesday in the journal Nature, in September 2016, Victor Buso caught the light of a dying star — the supernova — from galaxy NGC 613. Buso first began building telescopes at age 11, before constructing his personal astronomy tower atop his home eight years ago. Buso’s images are the first anyone has seen of the phase, when a wave of energy passes from a star’s interior to its exterior as it explodes. The chances of catching such an event are 1 in 10 million. (TWP)

Study seeks intel from ‘superagers’ For clues to memory loss, scientists study sharp octogenarians

HEALTH It’s pretty extraordinary for people in their 80s and 90s to keep the same sharp memory as those decades younger, and now scientists are peeking into the brains of those “superagers” to uncover their secret. The work is the flip side of the disappointing hunt for new drugs to fight or prevent Alzheimer’s disease. “Why don’t we figure out what it is we might need to do to maximize our memory?” said neuroscientist Emily Rogalski, who leads the SuperAging study at Northwestern University near Chicago. What does it take to be a superager? A youthful brain in someone 80 or older. A battery of tests were given to more than 1,000 people who thought they might qualify, and only about 5 percent passed. The key memory challenge: Listen to 15 unrelated words, and a half-hour later recall at least nine. That’s the norm for 50-year-olds, but the average 80-year-old recalls five.

Some superagers remember them all. Rogalski’s superagers tend to be extroverts with strong social networks, but otherwise come from all walks of life. But deep in their brains is where she’s finding compelling hints that superagers are more resilient against the ravages of time. Early on, brain scans showed that a superager’s cortex — an outer brain layer critical for memory — is much thicker than normal for their age, looking more like the cortex of healthy 50- and 60-year-olds. Rogalski’s team found another possible explanation: A superager’s cortex doesn’t shrink as fast. Deeper in the brain, the attention region is larger, too. And autopsies showed that brain region was packed with von Economo neurons, thought to play a role in social processing and awareness. The superagers had four to five times more of those neurons than the typical octogenarian, Rogalski said — more even than the average young adult. Now scientists are exploring how they deflect damage and the chance that superagers have different pathways to brain health. LAURAN NEERGAARD (AP)

questioned why the NRA was being given such a prominent platform in the debate, both by CNN and in Trump’s remarks. “I am so outraged that the NRA is being given a seat at the table, whether it’s by the media or by the president,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action, an advocacy group seeking gun reforms. “We’re acting as though lobbyists have a right to have a say, or to help us write our nation’s gun policies. They don’t.” MARK BERMAN AND DAVID WEIGEL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

make all of us less free.” LaPierre also restated his belief that more armed security would stop school shootings, echoing Trump, while calling on parents and local authorities to beef up security on campuses. “ Evi l wa lks a mong us,” LaPierre said. “And God help us if we don’t harden our schools and protect our kids.” Shortly before LaPierre spoke, Trump tweeted a message of support for him and others at the NRA as “Great People and Great American Patriots” who he said would “do the right thing.” LaPierre’s speech came on the heels of the NRA releasing a video claiming the media benefit from covering mass shootings and use them “to juice their ratings and push their agenda.” Survivors of the shooting called for new gun restrictions in a rally Wednesday in Tallahassee, Fla., and then reiterated those pleas that night at a town hall hosted by CNN and attended by lawmakers and Dana Loesch, an NRA spokeswoman. Loesch, speaking Thursday before LaPierre, echoed the NRA’s advertisement. “Many in legacy media love mass shootings,” Loesch said. “I’m not saying that you love the tragedy. But I am saying that you love the ratings. Crying white mothers are ratings gold.” Some gun control groups

NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre bashed the media Thursday in his CPAC speech.

Should we arm teachers? President Trump continues to push his idea of arming some teachers as a deterrent for school shootings, claiming it would be far less costly than hiring guards. He tweeted Thursday that with his strategy, “ATTACKS WOULD END!” Here’s how others reacted to the idea. (AP/TWP) AMERICAN FEDERATION OF TEACHERS: The union’s president, Randi Weingarten, called arming teachers a horrible idea and said an educator’s handgun would be no match for assault-style weapons. NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS: The advocacy group that provides training to school-based law enforcement officers said it strongly recommends that no firearms be allowed on a campus except those carried by specially trained police officers. NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION:

Wayne LaPierre, CEO of the NRA, called schools “virtually wide-open soft targets.” He added, “It should not be easier for a madman to shoot up a school than a bank or a jewelry store.”

FLORIDA SHOOTING After a week of media silence following the school shooting in Florida, the National Rifle Association went on the offensive in its first public response to the massacre, pushing back against law enforcement officials, the media, gun control advocates and calls for stricter gun laws from teenage survivors of the attack. The gun rights group used speeches and videos to try to blunt an emotionally charged wave of calls for new gun restrictions since a gunman armed with an AR-15 rifle killed 17 people at a Parkland, Fla., high school. As the teens who escaped the bloodshed have passionately campaigned for new laws, it appears the politics around the fraught issue of gun control are shifting, with President Trump and some conservative lawmakers expressing a willingness to consider at least modest measures. While the NRA initially held back from the fray, that changed as a spokeswoman debated survivors of the attack during a heated town hall and then Wayne LaPierre, the group’s chief executive, forcefully decried gun control advocates and the media for its coverage of the shooting. “They don’t care about our schoolchildren,” LaPierre said Thursday morning near the start of the Conservative Political Action Conference. “They want to

PARKLAND, FLA. The armed officer on duty at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School took a defensive position outside the school and did not enter the building while the shooter was killing people inside with an AR-15 assault-style rifle, Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said Thursday. Israel suspended School Resource Deputy Scot Peterson on Thursday after seeing a video from the Parkland, Fla., school that showed Peterson outside the school building while the shooter was inside. He said Peterson was armed, and in uniform, and should have gone into the building during the six-minute event, which left 17 people dead. Israel said the deputy should have “went in, addressed the killer, killed the killer.” Peterson, 54, a resource officer at the school since 2009, resigned after Israel suspended him. Israel said two other officers have been placed on a restricted assignment pending an internal investigation. Israel said that Peterson was in an office dealing with a schoolrelated issue when the first shots were fired and that Paterson got on his radio and then moved toward the outside of the building where the shooting was taking place. When asked what Paterson is seen doing on the video, Israel replied: “Nothing.” Israel said he “clearly” knew there was a shooter inside.

NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch said Thursday that the “media love mass shootings” for the ratings.

ALL-STAR TRADED

Pirates get Dickerson from Rays

RICK SNIDER | SPORTS GURU

Nationals principal owner Ted Lerner has spent lavishly on Washington’s roster, but he continues to pinch pennies when it comes to management. It’s time to pay Mike Rizzo, the general manager and president of baseball operations. Rizzo’s five-year, $10 million deal expires in October. The architect of four NL East titles in six years earns about a third of the reported annual salaries of Cubs president Theo Epstein ($8 million) and Dodgers president Andrew Friedman ($7 million). Considering that the Nats’ 555 victories since 2012 are second only to the Dodgers (559), Rizzo is due for a raise. Yes, the Nationals have been postseason busts with four first-round knockouts. But the journey from consecutive 100loss seasons in 2008 and 2009 to NL East rulers has made for pleasant summers in D.C. Lerner could feasibly sign a $400 million check to keep

outfielder Bryce Harper when he becomes a free agent after the season. The Nats learned that overpaying is sometimes worth it after giving Jayson Werth $126 million in 2010. For the Nats to retain Harper, they’ll likely need to negotiate during the season before he hits the open market. If the superstar wants to stay, the Lerners will probably pay. The key, though, is Rizzo. How can the GM negotiate a long-term deal with Harper in good faith if he’s halfway out the door himself? It smacks of noncommittal owners who have long refused to pay for managers what they’re worth. Paying Rizzo now would make Harper see that the team is focusing on the future. Rizzo has done a tremendous job over the past nine years as the general manager. He’s not embarrassing the franchise like predecessor Jim Bowden. If Rizzo becomes a free agent, there will be plenty of suitors driving up the price for his services. For his part, Rizzo said at

spring training media day that he’s “confident” in a future deal, and, “there’s no reason why it shouldn’t get done.” The Nats can live without Harper — they’ve groomed top prospect Victor Robles to replace him — but why would they want to? The temptations for him to sign elsewhere will be enormous, which is why Rizzo needs to deliver an overwhelming offer now. Harper has already said he won’t discuss his contract this year, but it’s already become a distraction. Speculation over his future will make two years

of franchise tag drama with Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins sound like whispers. Franchises don’t evolve into World Series champions overnight. It takes years to build an organization, and Rizzo has been nearly flawless. If Washington is to make the next leap — and actually win a playoff series — it needs to keep Harper. That means keeping Rizzo. Otherwise, let the rebuilding begin in 2019.

Tampa Bay on Thursday traded outfielder Corey Dickerson to Pittsburgh for reliever Daniel Hudson, infield prospect Tristan Gray and cash. Dickerson, 28, was designated for assignment Saturday. He was the AL’s staring DH in last summer’s All-Star Game but struggled at the plate the second half of the season. Dickerson batted .282 with 27 home runs and 62 RBIs in 2017, but hit only .241 after the All-Star break. He was obtained from the Rockies in January 2016. Hudson, 30, went 2-7 with a 4.38 ERA in a career-high 71 appearances in 2017. The right-hander has a 3.98 career ERA over eight years with the Pirates, White Sox and Diamondbacks. (AP)

Wizards to bring back Sessions

The Wizards on Thursday added depth at point guard by agreeing to sign Ramon Sessions, 31, who was waived by the Knicks earlier this season but has experience with the team after backing up John Wall for parts of two seasons. Nats infielder jokes that professional look could attract All-Star attention

One-Day Installation1

MLB Trea Turner was stunned when he walked into the Nationals’ clubhouse in West Palm Beach, Fla., last week. Anthony Rendon, his locker neighbor, had sheared his long hair in favor of a closecropped cut. “It’s just a big change. … I actually didn’t care for the man bun and all the curls,” Turner said. “I just wasn’t prepared for it.” Washington can only hope it’s the only significant change for Rendon in 2018. Still an underthe-radar elite player, he was sixth in the NL MVP voting last season but didn’t make the All-Star team. He posted career highs in batting average (.301), home runs (25), doubles (41) and slugging percentage (.533). He was one of three qualified batters with more walks (84) than strikeouts (82). And he’s a toptier defensive third basemen. New Nationals hitting coach Kevin Long hasn’t been overlooking Rendon. On Tuesday afternoon, Long hinted at ways he believes he can help different players — except for Rendon. “I’m leaving Anthony Rendon [alone],” Long said. “He’s one guy I’m not going to be able to help

Bryce Harper and Daniel Murphy are free agents next year. In the meantime, Rendon got married in the offseason. He said he wanted to cut his hair for the November wedding, but his wife didn’t want him to, so he waited. After a year and a half of growing it out, the maintenance had gotten annoying. “I’m thinking [with] my new haircut, I’m a professional now,” Rendon said with a smile. “I’m trying to show everybody to take me seriously. So maybe I’ll get more All-Star votes.” JORGE CASTILLO

Taking down Canada sends USA into final

The American women celebrate after ending a 20-year gold medal drought with a shootout win over rival Canada.

JERRY BREWER | THE WASHINGTON POST

‘A lifetime of work’: Struggles and pain culminate in gold Over the past four years, Jocelyne LamoureuxDavidson had practiced the move thousands of times. And she had failed thousands of times, “butchered” it, she said. It was so intricate: a forehand fake, a backhand fake and then a quick transition back to the forehand to shoot the puck. Now it will be recognized, perhaps for eternity, as the greatest goal in United States women’s hockey history, the shot that ended a 20-year Olympic gold medal drought and lifted the Americans over Canada, 3-2 in a shootout. The triumph was the culmination of too many yesterdays to count, when the U.S. worked to overcome disappointment and doubt, when it fought for equality and took shelter together during a hurricane.

Those moments created The Moment. It felt so good because — for a long time, for four Olympic tournaments, for three gold medal game losses to Canada — it hurt so bad. “A lifetime of work,” forward Amanda Kessel said. “So this means everything.” On Thursday afternoon, Lamoureux-Davidson executed her in-out-in dance to perfection and made Canada’s Shannon Szabados, who was selected as the best goaltender of the tournament, fall on her back. U.S. goalie Maddie Rooney stopped Meghan Agosta, and finally — after a 2-2 tie in regulation, a 20-minute overtime and a six-round shootout — silver became gold again. The work LamoureuxDavidson put into that shot mirrored her team’s struggle. She labored with one of her old college coaches, Peter Elander, on a move he named “Oops! … I

did it again.” Her hands needed to be just right. She needed to be patient before exploding. Eleven months ago, the team’s bond led to an extraordinary act when they threatened to boycott the world championships in a demand for better wages. They used to get $6,000 during Olympic years and no pay during the off years. Now, most of the players earn $70,000 per year before bonuses. USA Hockey agreed to another $15,000 for a silver medal and $20,000 for gold. The medals are priceless, but go ahead and authorize those direct deposits, too. On the road to gold, they had to wait out Hurricane Irma while training in Florida. They worked with a sports psychologist and learned how to discard past disappointment. “Our opponent is never the other team we’re facing,” forward Gigi Marvin said. “It’s the doubt. It’s always the doubt.” Lamoureux-Davidson expunged all doubt with her of an ankle-breaking triple fake. “Oops! … I did it again” doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue, but who cares? Bet you won’t have trouble remembering it. Follow Jerry Brewer on Twitter @JerryBrewer

After finishing 51 consecutive events, Austria’s Marcel Hirscher misses gate, skies out in Olympic slalom

John Shuster, below, and his U.S. team will play for a gold medal against Sweden after a 5-3 semifinal upset over Canada, a squad that has struggled at the PyeongChang Olympics despite dominating the world of curling for years. Before Thursday, the U.S. had never beaten Canada at the Olympics and had not made a podium since the 2006 Turin Games, when it won bronze. Just as remarkable was the loss for Canada, which has won the gold in men’s curling at the past three Winter Olympics. Shuster, 35, has had a rocky journey. After winning bronze in Turin, he was benched at the 2010 Vancouver Games. In Sochi, his team finished ninth. But on Thursday, Shuster sealed the win with a final throw that knocked out a Canadian rock. (AP)

Shiffrin finishes games holding gold and silver ALPINE SKIING In so many ways, the final day of Mikaela Shiffrin’s Olympics came to embody all the days and emotions that preceded it. Frustration shared a stage with joy. Beauty was marred by tiny blemishes. Results that didn’t necessarily match her goals were nothing to be ashamed of. Shiffrin showed no signs of disappointment Thursday, when a sixth-place downhill run and a third-place slalom run delivered a silver in the combined. She had come to PyeongChang hoping to win multiple medals, and she did. An earlier gold in the giant slalom went with Thursday’s silver and a slalom gold from four years ago. So Shiffrin, who is all of 22 years old, has three Winter Olympic medals, more than any American not named Bode Miller, Julia Mancuso or Lindsey Vonn — all U.S. Alpine royalty. “To come away from this Olympics with two medals is insane,” Shiffrin said. A gold and a silver — paired with a fourth-place finish in her best event, the slalom — were not exactly what she’d spent the past four years dreaming about. She had discussed openly the possibility of winning three or four or maybe even five medals, and as she grew faster in every single discipline, no one was eager to rule her out. Wind played a factor. All three events Shiffrin raced were held on different days than originally scheduled, forcing her to drop out of others. RICK MAESE (TWP)

How to Incorporate Pantone’s 2018 Color of the Year in Your Living Space

Image from Pantone.com

t’s official: Pantone has released its color of the year for 2018, and it’s going to be the year to let purple reign. Specifically, the Pantone color is Ultra Violet—a blue-based purple that is meant to inspire originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking. Start fresh with new home décor that will inspire you to be your best self and achieve all of your goals. While you may not be able to paint your walls the ultra violet color, there are other ways to let this beautiful, deep color make your living space pop.

I

Bold Furniture The best way to fully embrace ultra violet is to buy significant pieces in the color. Anything from a couch to a table could add a big pop of color to your room to make a bold statement. Finding affordable, funky furniture can be tricky, but it isn’t impossible. With all of the amazing

websites for furniture, there are plenty of purple options out there. If you can’t find something you like, consider upcycling an old piece. The best thing about up-cycling is if you decide to re-paint it again later (maybe a year from now when the 2019 Pantone color of the year is released), then you can definitely do so.

Accent Pieces If you love ultra violet, but aren’t sure you want to invest the money or effort into a bold, purple couch or a funky, purple table, then consider adding accent pieces like curtains, rugs, blankets, and throw pillows to incorporate the ultra violet color into your home. Stay true to ultra violet with darker textiles, or soften them up a little with a lighter purple color. Let the purple color really shine by choosing many items, or just choose one to make a statement.

Small Pops Picture frames are a really easy way to add a pop of color to any room. Get simple wooden frames with no finish so you can paint them any color you like. You can also repaint them later if you decide that purple may not be for you. If you already have nice frames, swap out the prints in them for a new look. Vases are another small way to show your love for the Pantone color of the year. Choose a dark, opaque vase or a lightly tinted one. How you choose to incorporate the Pantone color of the year in your home is completely up to you. Ultra violet is meant to inspire experimentation and non-conformity, so take it and make it your own. Let it inspire your next big project or push you to achieve your biggest goal. ■ By Jordan McElwain for Apartment Showcase

‘Loveless’

Will all six players make it to the end of “Game Night” in one piece? Will that table?

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

Just playin’ funny: ‘Game Night’ beat my expectations “Game Night” is a pretty good example of a pretty good movie. You know the kind. The one you pick when you need a palate cleanser after the banquet of heavy Oscar contenders — and then it turns out to be surprisingly good. This is one of those surprises. Max and Annie, a hyper-competitive couple (Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams), host a weekly game night. One time, Max’s brother Brooks (Kyle Chandler) arrives from abroad and announces that he has set up an elaborate, murder-mysterystyle scavenger hunt in which one of them will get kidnapped and the others have to find the

“victim.” Of course, Brooks actually gets taken and the game is afoot! (Sorry.) At times, the story strains credulity (no Settlers of Catan, but someone brings Life? And apparently Scrabble is now an option for a sixperson group?), but what follows is an often very funny, perfectly enjoyable 90-minute caper. The group has a nice chemistry — Jesse Plemons is particularly funny as the creepy cop next door — and, honestly, it’s refreshing to see an adult comedy that doesn’t have a single boob or poop joke. There IS a puke joke, but you don’t actually see anything and it makes sense in context. That said, no one can argue that “Game Night” is a

comedic masterpiece; THAT said, no one can argue that it was trying to be. Even making a good comedy is hard, but directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (2015’s “Vacation” reboot) and writer Mark Perez have done just that. And they’ve done it with some style: The fight scenes are particularly good, and there’s a chase filmed in one take (or at least it appears so) that is genuinely cool. The secret to making a great comedy is that it has to start in a serious place, with characters we care about. A movie that starts out as simply a vessel to tell jokes isn’t a movie — it’s a stand-up routine. (And not necessarily a good one. The best comedians don’t tell jokes, they tell stories.) For a

comedy to really work, every character has to have something at stake that they take very seriously. “Galaxy Quest” is one of my favorite comedies, and it has very few jokes. Alan Rickman’s immortal line “By Grabthar’s hammer … what a savings” is funny because it’s rooted in pathos and shame. And what’s funnier than pathos and shame? “Game Night” could have been very bad if the script had been built from the jokes up. Instead, it starts with interesting characters, adds a dire situation and lets the humor emerge organically from there. The movie doesn’t nail it; there is some mugging and it wasn’t until I sat down to write this that I realized I couldn’t remember the name of a single main character. But the humor and the performances are good enough to make you not really care about that. “Game Night” doesn’t belong in the pantheon of great comedies, but it does deliver laughs. Sometimes pretty good is good enough. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby

A 2018 Oscar nominee for best foreign language film, “Loveless” is an utterly banal story from Russian filmmaker Andrey Zvyagintsev, about an unhappy couple whose neglected 12-year-old son goes missing. Set in contemporary Russia, its messages about stagnation and heartlessness aren’t subtle. But they’re delivered with deadly, haunting finality. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘Nostalgia’ R, 114 min.

A chain of events — a fire and a car accident, all seen only in hindsight or off-screen — connect the characters in “Nostalgia,” a slow collage of stories about mortality and memory. But even with a strong ensemble cast — including Ellen Burstyn, Jon Hamm and Patton Oswalt — the film fails to drive home its point, about the power of the stuff we leave behind us when we die. M.O.

A strange type of spectacle FILM REVIEW Writer-director Alex Garland (“Ex Machina”) brings his considerable talents for weird vibes and arresting visuals to “Annihilation,” which dwells on nature run amok — and to a less successful effect. In this adaptation of Jeff VanderMeer’s novel, Natalie Portman plays Lena, a biologist and U.S. Army veteran who is tasked with investigating a mysterious entity — called the “Shimmer” — that has begun to envelop the southern United States. Previous teams have gone into the Shimmer and never returned, presumed to have either gone crazy or been killed. Together with a psychologist (Jennifer Jason Leigh), a physicist (Tessa Thompson), a paramedic (Gina Rodriguez) and an anthropologist (Tuva Novotny), Portman’s character plunges past an undulating rainbow-hued scrim into a forest teeming with familiar flora and fauna, as well as new life forms as beguiling as they are horrifying and potentially deadly. “Annihilation” is a tale of horror and suspense cut from the same jump-scare cloth as “Alien,” with a dash of “Arrival” — with its subtext of a woman mourning an unspoken loss — thrown in. The film initially exudes a form of magnetism every bit as somber and determined as Portman’s tersely self-possessed

protagonist. Garland exhibits exquisite taste in manifesting the Shimmer, as well as the fecund Florida swampland it’s overtaking, with disquieting efficiency. Graced with moments of astonishing, even psychedelic beauty — including profligate flowers and vines, spore-like growths worthy of Antoni Gaudi and fantastical beasts of the southern wild — this is a movie that moves quietly with a meditative tone. However, though Garland effectively ratchets up the mystery

of this story (we see brief flashbacks that put Lena’s marriage into context, with Oscar Isaac starring as her absent husband), the plot dissolves into a muddle of histrionics and deeply unsatisfying weirdness. And that’s a shame, because for its first hour or so, “Annihilation” presents a bracing if enigmatic example of filmmaking at its smartest and most highly attuned. For all her fragility, Portman exudes a dominating screen presence, playing off her

similarly sturdy and self-assured co-stars with convincing seriousness of purpose. And there’s something undeniably of-themoment in watching five credible, competent women stride off into an unknown future. It’s when the dream of “Annihilation” collides so felicitously with lived reality that the film comes together and takes hold. It may be broken eventually, but for a while the spell is a powerful one, and nearly irresistible. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Wolf to headline White House correspondents’ dinner

The White House Correspondents’ Association on Thursday announced this year’s headliner for its annual dinner: Michelle Wolf, a contributor to “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah” since 2016. “This is true news,” the comedian tweeted in response to social media posts about her new gig. The White House correspondents’ dinner will be held April 28 at the Washington Hilton. (TWP) NBC renews “Superstore” for Season 4

Lupita Nyong’o to star in film adaptation of Trevor Noah’s “Born a Crime”

You’re invited to ‘The Party’s’ dinner from hell FILM REVIEW Assembling a dinner party is a bit like putting together a meal: The ingredients need to be in the right proportions. In Sally Potter’s delicious new black comedy “The Party,” opinionated people with complicated friendships are thrown together into one big simmering stew. As the film opens, congratulations are in order: Janet (Kristin Scott Thomas), a member of an unnamed opposition party under the U.K.’s Tory government, has just been named shadow health minister. As she prepares a dinner party to celebrate, her erratic husband, Bill (Timothy Spall), gets drunk and listens to records. Janet’s guests include April (Patricia Clarkson), a cynic who can’t hide her contempt for her New Age boyfriend, Gottfried (Bruno Ganz); and Tom (Cillian Murphy), who arrives with a pistol and a stash of cocaine. As for Janet, she clutches her BlackBerry, texting her lover. Inevitably, bitter confrontations ensue, as the guests find themselves rethinking their core beliefs. Part of the thrill of “The Party” is watching these veteran actors bounce off one another. Potter’s black-and-white cinematography allows the viewers to better focus on individual, finely tuned performances. This is a film that encapsulates the anxiety of the present moment, complicated by friendships that lean, at times, toward outright hostility. ALAN ZILBERMAN (TWP)

EXPECTED RELEASE: June 29

EXPECTED RELEASE: March 9 (limited)

SUMMARY: A bunch of basketball players — Shaquille O’Neal, Reggie Miller, Nate Robinson and others — don possibly the worst old-age makeup in history to play (wait for it) basketball players. They’re getting the old team back together to take on the young’uns in a street basketball tournament. Seems reasonable. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: Forest Whitaker is almost unrecognizable as Desmond Tutu (THAT’S how you do makeup, “Uncle Drew”), who confronts an imprisoned killer (Eric Bana) in an effort to find a murdered woman. Unfortunately, the inmate is a white supremacist and a big fan of apartheid, so getting him to talk won’t be easy. K.P.K.

DIFFICULT

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

Did I feel like it was slanted or biased?” (EXPRESS)

Rachel McAdams is reportedly pregnant, sources told E! News. Though reps for McAdams were not available to confirm the news, E! notes that the actress has stayed suspiciously out of the spotlight of late, most recently skipping the Wednesday night premiere of her new movie “Game Night.” The site says she was last photographed wearing a “baggy jacket.” McAdams tends to keep her personal life private but, according to People magazine, she was romantically linked to writer Jamie Linden in April 2016. Both publications pointed to previous interviews in which McAdams has said she’s interested in having children. (EXPRESS)
