STRONG UNIONS, STRONGER COMMUNITIES BONNEE BENTUM

K-12 teacher, Philadelphia, Pa.

If unions are weakened, our voices won’t be there. And what we’ll see is the widening of the divide between the haves and the have-nots. Through our union, we won counselors and nurses for every public school; pay increases for staff after obtaining graduate degrees; and safe and healthy building conditions for all our children, your children.

LLAMARA PADRO-MILANO Registered nurse, Syracuse, N.Y.

Without the union, I wouldn’t have been able to go to Puerto Rico immediately after Hurricane Maria hit to provide lifesaving medical treatment. And I wasn’t alone—300 union brothers and sisters were with me, and when we went to homes, towns and neighborhoods, we were often told we were the first people they had seen to help.

DAVID WALSH

Grad employee, Princeton, N.J.

The union made all the difference in our fight to keep graduate school affordable for everyone, not just the wealthy; together we defeated a tax on graduate tuition so anyone who wants to advance their careers or dedicate their lives to research and learning can get the education they need.

Union teachers, nurses and public service employees educate our children, care for and heal our families, and keep our communities safe and running. Strong unions enable working people to fight for a better life and for the economic opportunity and security for all Americans. The Koch brothers, the DeVos family, and other wealthy and corporate interests see the opportunity and voice that unions enable as a threat to their power. They want to further rig our economy and our democracy against working folks. Corporate interests have committed millions to “defund and defang” unions, and the Koch brothers are using the massive tax breaks they just got to spend $400 million to “break” teachers unions and undermine public education.

Randi Weingarten president

These corporate interests have funded a case—Janus v. AFSCME— being heard by the Supreme Court today, which aims to defund and ultimately destroy unions. The Supreme Court has long upheld that states can decide how they handle their labor relations, including explicitly allowing unions to represent employees, and that public employees who do not want to join the union that represents them may instead pay a “fair share” fee. This fee is meant to compensate the union for bargaining contracts and other services; nonmembers are not required to pay anything toward any political activity by the union. Twenty-three states have opted to do this, because collective bargaining has proven to lead to more efficient state services and a better quality of life.

Janus’ backers argue, with no evidence, that this 40-year precedent violates nonmembers’ right to free speech. The current ideological composition of the Supreme Court suggests that this one complaint could undercut the interests of millions of workers by depriving their unions of funds they need to function. That’s not an unintended consequence—it’s the entire point of these assaults on unions. Unions fight for a better life for working people, and the right wing sees that as a threat.

Working people are uniting to stop this attack on our freedoms—an attack being funded by corporate interests that just want to rig our economy and democracy against us.

Visit go.aft.org/unionstrong and stand with working people fighting for the jobs, justice and freedoms we all deserve.

page three Popular local news site, shuttered in November, will return this spring MEDIA A partnership of public radio stations that includes WAMU 88.5 FM announced Friday that it has acquired DCist and two other websites, reviving outlets for local journalism that had abruptly shut down in November. A news release from D.C.based WAMU said it joined with WNYC in New York and KPCC in Southern California to acquire DCist, Gothamist and LAist, three outlets focused on local reporting in Washington, New York and Los Angeles, respectively. The terms of the deal were not disclosed. A WNYC news release said the sale was funded in large part by “two anonymous donors who are deeply committed to supporting local journalism.” At dcist.com, a message read: “We’re coming back!” Andi McDaniel, WAMU’s senior director of content and news, said WNYC bought the three websites, then sought to parcel

them out to public radio stations in those markets. WAMU plans to staff DCist with a three-person editorial team, building on the “natural synergy” the site will have with journalists on the air, McDaniel said. The site will be independent and not run by a parent company in New York. Founded in 2004, DCist offered news focused on the District, alongside coverage of nightlife, food and the arts. DCist and other sites in the Gothamist network were shut down in November, a week after its New York writers voted to unionize. More than 100 employees were left without jobs in New York alone, and articles disappeared from the site before being restored. Rachel Sadon, a former DCist editor in chief now working at WAMU, said the site’s relaunch is expected in the spring. “There was a hole left in the D.C. market when DCist left,” said Sadon, who also advised the station during the acquisition. “I’m excited that we have the opportunity to build it back up again.” JUSTIN WM. Another fox attack was reported nearby — a man said a fox fought with a dog. That man kicked at the fox, which took one of his shoes and fled. Police could not find the fox. School scandals place a spotlight on Bowser

Woman cries out in court after White House crash

Education crisis comes during re-election year with little competition

19

JAHI CHIKWENDIU (THE WASHINGTON POST)

THE DISTRICT The education crisis unfolding before D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser is the stuff of nightmares for a big-city mayor in an election year. She had to oust her highestprofile appointment, Schools Chancellor Antwan Wilson, last week under pressure from lawmakers and parents outraged after he violated his own policies to place his daughter in a sought-after school. The school system is already under federal investigation amid revelations that one-third of high school diplomas handed out last year were improperly awarded. Parents fed up with the scandals are questioning Bowser’s leadership. They are the kind of issues ripe for campaign debate. But with no credible challenger and the filing deadline less than a month away, Bowser seems insulated from voter backlash at the polls. “In ordinary times, this would probably be a big deal, and the opponent or opponents would try to exploit it for what it’s worth,” said Council Member Mary M. Cheh, D-Ward 3, a frequent critic of the mayor. “But there’s a longer game here: The mayor cares a lot about how effective

she is and whether she’s able to accomplish her goals. To the extent she’s seen as unable to do that, it will hurt her over the long term.” Bill Lightfoot, who chairs Bowser’s re-election campaign, predicted that lingering voter frustrations would subside. “The crisis itself could have — did — incite people’s passions and could have had a political backlash,” Lightfoot said. “But it’s to the mayor’s credit that she promptly resolved a highly emotional problem. She did what voters expect the mayor to do.” Political observers were similarly doubtful whether a voter rebellion would materialize. “Education, while it’s superimportant, is something that

resonates viscerally with a small number of people,” said Michael Fauntroy, a professor of political science at Howard University. “More immediately, it’s going to create more aggressive oversight of her administration.” But Mark Plotkin, a political activist and commentator, said frustrations over Bowser’s several-day delay in sacking Wilson could be part of a challenger’s case against the incumbent. “You can feel a sense of outrage; you could see a candidate making her responsible for these things,” Plotkin said. “But there’s no natural inheritor of what is widespread disgust. So who is the beneficiary? Who gets the political advantage of it if there’s not another name on the ballot?” FENIT NIRAPPIL (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Costs could rain on parade for military President Trump on Saturday night said he is hopeful a military parade “with a lot of plane flyovers” can be staged in D.C. on Veterans Day but acknowledged the expense could be a concern. “We’ll see if we can do it at a reasonable cost, and if we can’t, we won’t do it, but the generals would love to do it, I can tell you, and so would I,” Trump said during a call to Fox News. “I think it’s great for our country.” The parade Trump envisions would cost between $10 million and $30 million, White House budget director Mick Mulvaney said earlier this month. Trump has directed the Pentagon to plan a parade to showcase U.S. military might. Trump suggested the military parade would follow the traditional route of inaugural parades. (TWP)

Terrorism concerns prompt parking changes for events

Cost of pipeline through Va. could increase up to $1.5B

Defense: Teen who brought gun didn’t have grievances

Following vehicle-based attacks in New York and Charlottesville, Va., a new parking policy could force thousands to move their cars during major events in D.C. The Metropolitan Police Department told WTOP-FM it is instituting new parking restrictions, including removing all vehicles along special event routes, particularly during races and parades. Council member Charles Allen questioned the effectiveness of focusing on cars and predicted it will kill events that have gone on for years. The new rules will apply to races just weeks away, including the March 10 Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon. (AP)

The cost of a controversial natural gas pipeline planned to run through Virginia is expected to increase by more than $1 billion. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that Duke Energy is a 47 percent partner in the 600-mile Dominion Energy-led Atlantic Coast Pipeline. Duke CEO Lynn Good said in an earnings call last week that the estimated project cost is now at least $6 billion because of delays in permitting. Dominion spokesman Aaron Ruby couldn’t confirm the new estimate but said Dominion’s financial disclosure this week would have more information. Duke anticipates the project’s cost to rise up to $1.5 billion. (AP)

Police later found an AR-15 assault-style rifle and other items in his home. Chen’s lawyers have asked a judge to re-evaluate the need for the 18-year-old to be held in jail pending further court proceedings. His lawyers wrote that “there is no document that can be described as a list of grievances.” (AP)

Visit by Mexican leader scuttled after testy call POLITICS Tentative plans for Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto to make his first visit to the White House to meet with President Trump were scuttled last week after a testy call between the two leaders ended in an impasse over Trump’s promised border wall, according to U.S. and Mexican officials. Pena Nieto was eyeing an official trip to Washington this month or in March, but both countries agreed to call off the plan after Trump would not agree to publicly affirm Mexico’s position that it would not fund construction of a border wall that the Mexican people widely consider offensive, said the officials. Speaking by phone Tuesday, Pena Nieto and Trump devoted a considerable portion of their roughly 50-minute conversation to the wall, and neither man would compromise his position. One Mexican official said Trump “lost his temper.” But U.S. officials described Trump instead as being frustrated and exasperated, saying he believed it was unreasonable for Pena Nieto to expect him to back off his campaign promise of forcing Mexico to pay for the wall. B ot h ac c ou nts c on fi r m it was Pena Nieto’s desire to avoid public embarrassment

— and Trump’s unwillingness to provide that assurance — that proved to be the deal breaker. With Mexico heading into a July presidential election, any action by Pena Nieto that could be seen as buckling under U.S. pressure risks damaging the prospects for his Institutional Revolutionary Party. The two presidents’ public posturing over the wall has harmed their personal relationship and jeopardized the alliance between the countries. Still, negotiations between their respective administrations continue apace on the North American Free Trade Agreement and other issues. And

both governments have strived to portray their ties as strong and their exchanges as smooth. U.S. officials said Trump and Pena Nieto agreed to have their staffs continue talking and try to reach a deal about the wall. After the two presidents spoke, officials said, senior adviser Jared Kushner called Pena Nieto to help smooth things over. U.S. officials said they believe Pena Nieto may try again to visit Washington, and the Mexican official said the presidents may get together in April at the Summit of the Americas in Peru. PHILIP

nation+world CHARLIE SHOEMAKER (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

Divided by drought Cape Town is running out of water, and the crisis has highlighted the vast gap between rich and poor CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA What do you do when your city is running out of water? The answer, at least in one of the world’s most unequal countries, depends on how much money you have. Within the next few months, Cape Town’s taps could run dry, the result of a protracted drought and a government failure to provide an alternative water source to this city of 4 million. Now, residents are scrambling to find their own private solutions. For the wealthy, that means hiring companies to dig boreholes and wells. It means buying truckloads of bottled water, even at inflated prices. It means ordering desalination machines to make groundwater drinkable — or safe enough to fill a swimming pool. For the poor, it means waiting to see what the government comes up with, and contemplating whether you can afford to cut back on food to be able to buy water. In modern history, no city in the developed world has ever run out of water. Cape Town’s experience, then, may be a Hobbesian test of the way people on opposite ends of the 21st century’s income gap access the most basic resources in the most dire times. “Inequity plays out in water very obviously, and what we’re

seeing in Cape Town risks becoming an example of that,” said Giulio Boccaletti, the global managing director for water with the Nature Conservancy. “The social contract breaks down, if the rich find their own solution and leave the rest to fend for themselves.” A few miles from the city’s glittering coastline, Portia Ngqulana, 33, sat in her home in the Gugulethu settlement, an agglomeration of small concrete homes and sheet-metal shacks where water arrives via communal taps, each shared by about 200 people. So far, it’s still flowing — most of the time. “If the water stops, what can we do? We’ll eat less, I guess, and we’ll find a way to buy bottles,” she said. In other parts of the city, the water shortage has prompted a surge of spending, families investing millions of dollars to insulate themselves from the drought. For $6,000, a borehole can be dug, tapping into underwater reservoirs. For $400, people can buy special washing machines that use small quantities of water. In upscale parts of the city, bottled water has been sold out for days at a time. “The lesson here is that you can’t trust the government to provide water for you,” said Gabby

What does 50 liters of water look like? Each person in Cape Town is limited to using 50 liters — about 13 gallons — of water per day. To achieve this, the government recommends only flushing the toilet once a day and taking “stop-start” showers, in which the water is turned off while applying soap and shampoo. So far, because of the shortages, the city has imposed a daily consumption limit of 50 liters per person. “The city is very aware of the need to be sensitive to the vulnerable and poor,” said Xanthea Limberg, the member of Cape Town’s city council in charge of water and waste services. Under the city’s disaster plan, she added, informal settlements will receive water as long it is available, to prevent disease from spreading through densely populated areas. Cape Town was originally expected to run out of water in April; now, thanks to conservation, officials say that potential “Day Zero” has been pushed back to July. KEVIN SIEFF (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Stolen Degas found on a bus French customs agents in Marne-la-Vallee found an impressionist painting by Edgar Degas stowed on a bus, more than eight years after it was reported stolen. The work, bearing the signature “Degas,” was found on Feb. 16 in a suitcase in the bus’s luggage compartment. No passenger claimed the suitcase. Experts verified the artwork as Degas’ “Les Choristes” (“The Chorus Singers”). It was stolen from a Marseille museum in 2009. (AP)

Sacred church shuttered in dispute with authorities

North Korea is “willing to have talks” with the United States, South Korea’s presidential Blue House said Sunday, as the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics closed. During a meeting in PyeongChang on Sunday night, North Korea’s chief representatives told President Moon Jae-in that Pyongyang was open to dialogue with Washington. The announcement comes after North Korea on Sunday issued a tirade against the Trump administration over its announcement Friday of another wave of potentially crippling sanctions blacklisting 56 vessels, shipping companies and other entities. The doors of Jerusalem’s sacred Church of the Holy Sepulchre were shuttered Sunday amid a growing dispute between Christian leaders in the Holy Land and Israel over the future of multiple church-owned properties and lands that Christians say should be protected by international law. The move at the site where Christians believe Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected comes after the Jerusalem municipality took steps to collect taxes on church properties in the city. The municipality says the churches owe it more than $185 million on certain properties used for commercial purposes. (TWP)

The death toll rose to at least five on Sunday after severe thunderstorms swept through the central U.S., spawning a tornado that flattened homes, gale-force winds and widespread flooding from the Upper Midwest to Appalachia. The system that stretched from Texas to the Canadian Maritime provinces had prompted several emergency declarations even before the dangerous storms arrived. Three people died in Kentucky, one in northeast Arkansas and one person in southwestern Michigan. Wind gusts of up to 50 mph downed power lines in several states hugging Lake Michigan. (AP)

NRA boycott picks up

BEIJING China’s ruling Communist Party has proposed scrapping term limits for the country’s president, its official news agency said Sunday, appearing to lay the groundwork for party leader Xi Jinping to rule as president beyond 2023. The party’s Central Committee proposed to remove from the constitution the expression that China’s president and vice president “shall serve no more than two consecutive terms,” the Xinhua News Agency said. “ X i Ji npi ng h as fi na l ly

achieved his ultimate goal when he first embarked on Chinese politics — that is to be the Mao Zedong of the 21st century,” said Willy Lam, a political analyst at the Chinese University in Hong Kong. Xi, 64, cemented his status as the most powerful Chinese leader since Mao in the 1970s at last year’s twice-a-decade Communist Party congress, where Xi’s name and a political theory attributed to him were added to the party constitution as he was given a second five-year term as general secretary. It was the latest move by the party signaling Xi’s willingness to break with tradition and centralize power under him. Xi has taken control of an unusually

wide range of political, economic and other functions, a break with the past two decades of collective leadership.

“What is happening is potentially very dangerous because the reason why Mao Zedong made one mistake after another was because China at the time was a one-man show,” Lam said. “For Xi Jinping, whatever he says is the law. There are no longer any checks and balances.” Xi is coming to the end of his first five-year term as president and is set to be appointed to his second term at an annual meeting of the rubber-stamp parliament that starts March 5. The proposal to end term limits will likely be approved at that meeting. Term limits on officeholders have been in place since they were included in the 1982 constitution, when lifetime tenure was abolished. GILLIAN WONG (AP)

The House Intelligence Committee released on Saturday a redacted memo authored by Democrats and intended to rebut GOP allegations that federal law enforcement agencies had political motivations for wiretapping one of President Trump’s former campaign aides. In their retort, Democrats charge that the GOP unfairly maligned the FBI and the Justice Department for citing in their surveillance application information from the author of a controversial dossier alleging that Trump had ties to Russian officials, research that was paid for by the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. Republican leaders have argued that the former campaign aide, Carter Page, was unfairly targeted, saying the surveillance court that approved the warrant was never told that information from the dossier’s author, former British spy Christopher Steele, was financed by the Democrats. According to the Democrats’ memo, Page had been of interest to the FBI for years. It asserts that the bureau had interviewed him multiple times about his contacts with Russian intelligence, including in March 2016 — the same month he was named a Trump campaign adviser, and months before Steele was hired to conduct research on Trump. ANALYSIS If the #BoycottNRA movement were a land invasion, it would have blitzed across the lightly defended countryside of corporate America in the past few days, pressuring United Airlines, Delta, Best Western, MetLife and at least a dozen other companies to do away with discounts and perks for National Rifle Association members. But the boycott inspired by the Florida shooting massacre has stalled at the first stronghold of resistance: None of the video-streaming giants — Apple, Google’s YouTube or Amazon (the company’s founder, Jeffrey Bezos, owns The Washington Post and Express) — have acknowledged a petition and viral demands to take NRA videos offline. If they do, and the world’s largest tech corporations effectively declare the NRA a pariah, boycotters have proposed plans to advance on the gun rights group’s power centers: its political capital and massive funding. Or the boycott could end here and fail to change U.S. gun laws or culture, as other anti-NRA campaigns have failed before. While the #BoycottN R A hashtag has floated around social media for years, the movement exploded after the Feb. 14 school shooting in Parkland, Fla. One of the first tweets to go semi-viral was posted by a selfdescribed retired principal. A few days later, a combination of gun control activists, teenage shooting survivors and liberal groups had turned the hashtag into a full-blown pressure campaign. Any corporation with even a tangential affiliation to the NRA was called out, with lists circulating across Twitter. first to bow to the calls for boycott. The bank announced Thursday that it would discontinue its “NRA Visa Card,” which had given the organization’s members 5 percent back on gas and sporting-goods purchases. The rental car giant Enterprise followed suit a few hours later. “All three of our brands have ended the discount for NRA members,” effective March 26, the car rental company wrote Thursday on Twitter. Hertz, Avis Budget Group and TrueCar would soon join Enterprise, as would North American Van Lines and Allied Van Lines. The companies faced a backlash from gun rights supporters, but only a few corporations on the boycott list resisted. By the end of Saturday, more than a dozen of the country’s larger corporations — representing the travel, software, insurance, banking and hospitality industries — had all abandoned the NRA.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott backs raising age for gun purchases to 21

Governors talk guns A growing number of governors from both parties have joined calls for a reconsideration of gun laws and school safety measures. At the winter meeting of the National Governors Association this weekend, individual state leaders said they would be open to raising the age requirement for the purchase of long guns to 21 or said they believed there should be better ways for family members or others to take concerns about unstable individuals to a judge and have weapons confiscated. But most said they opposed President Trump’s proposal to arm more teachers. (TWP)

Nothing like that had happened after the Sandy Hook massacre in 2012, or any other gun massacre in modern U.S. history. In a statement released Saturday, the NRA accused the corporations that dropped their

discounts of “a shameful display of political and civic cowardice,” but also dismissed the significance of their snubs. By Saturday, the boycott push was focused on tech giants that stream NRA-produced videos — namely Amazon, Apple, Google and Roku. NRATV, a 24-hour streaming channel, is sometimes accused of being the group’s propaganda arm. An online petition demanding that Amazon drop NRATV had amassed more than 130,000 signatures by Sunday evening. But for all the companies that have signed on to the latest NRA boycotts, they have managed only to wipe out a few peripheral perks for the group’s members. How far the boycott movement will spread is unknown. But if it keeps up at the pace of the past few days, there are signs it could threaten the political and financial cornerstones of the gun lobby. PARKLAND, FLA. Republican state lawmakers in Florida called on Sunday for the suspension of Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, accusing him of “incompetence and neglect of duty” in the months before the Feb. 14 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Florida House Speaker Richard Corcoran and 73 Republican colleagues urged Gov. Rick Scott, R, to suspend Israel, a Democrat who was re-elected in 2016 and has said he won’t resign over his agency’s handling of the shooting. “Sheriff Israel failed to maintain a culture of alertness, vigilance and thoroughness amongst his deputies,” Corcoran wrote in a letter released Sunday. “As a result of Sheriff Israel’s failures, students and teachers died.” Israel said before the letter’s release that the agency had stumbled in its handling of red flags about the shooter, including multiple warnings that he could carry out such an attack, but that he should not be held personally responsible. “I can only take responsibility for what I knew about,” Israel said Sunday morning in an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “I’ve given amazing leadership to this agency.” The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said Sunday afternoon that it would launch an investigation, at Gov. Scott’s request, into law enforcement’s response to the shooting. DREW HARWELL AND MARK BERMAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Ovechkin is poised to set another record when he plays in his 984th game tonight CAPITALS As Alex Ovechkin continues to pile up milestones, teammate Tom Wilson concedes it’s hard to keep track. “It seems every week, he’s breaking another record or passing some legend,” Wilson said. With two goals Saturday, Ovechkin is up to 596 in his NHL career. But as he inches closer to becoming the 20th player in league history to reach 600, Ovechkin will hit another benchmark tonight in Columbus, Ohio. When the Capitals visit the Blue Jackets (7 p.m., NBCSWA), Ovechkin will play his 984th regular-season game, passing Calle Johansson for most in franchise history. “I’m getting old,” said Ovechkin, 32. “Soon it’s going to be a thousand, and that’s a pretty big number for games. I’m happy to reach those milestones with one organization.” Although Ovechkin is best known for his offense, his durability — despite his physical

play — has allowed him to reach his latest milestone. Beginning with his first NHL shift, when Ovechkin delivered a punishing hit that dislodged two pieces of plexiglass, his style of play was clear. Since 2005-06, Ovechkin ranks fourth in the NHL in hits. “He was pretty reckless the way he played in his early years,” said defenseman Brooks Orpik, who played against Ovechkin from 2005 through 2014. “The percentages are pretty high when you play that physically demanding that you’re

going to have a major injury. The fact that he’s almost at 1,000 games without enduring anything major is pretty incredible.” Of the 29 regular-season games he’s missed in 13 seasons, only 17 were because of injury. Ovechkin ranks in the 99th percentile for games played since his rookie campaign, while playing more minutes than any other forward. “He doesn’t play a quiet game,” coach Barry Trotz said. “When he’s hunting and he’s going after you, he’s pounding you.” At 6-foot-3 and 235 pounds,

Ovechkin is the Capitals heaviest player. “He’s strong as an ox,” Trotz said. “He’s thick, he plays a heavy game and it’s amazing that he is as durable as he is.” Ovechkin has often played through pain, even scoring four goals in a game in December 2007, two nights after he was badly cut by a skate and needed stitches in his leg. A month later, he scored four goals against Montreal on the same night he took a high stick to the face that required stitches and broke his nose. Ovechkin has played all 62 games this season. His 38 goals lead the league and his 70 points are one more than last year, when he played all 82 games. “He’s a freak of nature,” said Wilson, who is 6-feet-4 and 218 pounds. “He outweighs me by about 20 pounds and he can move. That’s a scary recipe for success when you can skate and you’re that strong. It really seems like he hits a new milestone every game.” BEN RABY (FOR EXPRESS)

It didn’t take long for Victor Robles to make an impression in his first big league spring training. In Friday’s opener, the Nats’ top prospect made a diving catch in center and went 1-for-1. He went 1-for-3 in his first start Saturday. And he started in center Sunday, going 0-for-2 as a veteran-heavy lineup beat Atlanta 9-3. “I was watching when they were fielding in the outfield, and it’s almost like he glides out there,” manager Dave Martinez said. “He’s going to be a good one.” Robles, 20, was the youngest player to appear in an MLB game last season when he was called up in September. This year, he’s projected to begin the year with Class AAA Syracuse. Meanwhile, he could be one of the nice story lines of the spring. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

FBI corruption probe, dreary loss rock Terps Maryland investigating after report that Stone was illicitly paid $14K

MEN’S BASKETBALL Maryland coach Mark Turgeon said Saturday that the school is conducting an internal review of the men’s basketball program in the wake of a report Friday linking former Terrapins center Diamond Stone to the ongoing FBI probe into corruption in college basketball. Turgeon acknowledged the internal investigation after his team’s 85-61 loss to Michigan in College Park, the worst home loss in his tenure at Maryland. University President Wallace D. Loh, along with interim athletic director Damon Evans, are leading the internal review along with the school’s compliance office. The Yahoo Sports report Friday revealed documents from the nationwide federal inquiry showing that more than two dozen players and their relatives received a wide range of impermissible benefits, from meals to five-figure payments. The University of Maryland investigation centers on allegations that Stone was paid more than $14,000 by an agent during the 2015-16 season, his only one at Maryland, and is not focused on any current players, according

Coach Mark Turgeon said he had no knowledge of $14,303 that Diamond Stone allegedly got from an agent while playing for the Terps in 2015-16.

to school spokesman Zack Bolno. No current Maryland player or staff member is believed to be implicated in the FBI’s probe. Turgeon also said that Maryland had not been contacted by the NCAA as of Saturday afternoon, although that was expected to happen within the coming days. “I’ve always prided myself on doing things the right way. I’ve done that my whole career,” Turgeon said. “I have absolutely zero relationship with that agent, that agency. Wouldn’t know him if he walked in the room today, and we’ll cooperate any way we can with the investigation,” he added, referring to former NBA agent Andy Miller and his

agency, ASM, which allegedly paid Stone more than $14,303, according to the report published Friday by Yahoo Sports. That news has rocked Maryland’s program, although Turgeon refused to use it as an excuse for his team’s lackluster performance Saturday, which marked the first time that Maryland had lost by more than 18 points at home since 1998. The Terrapins finished the regular season 19-12, with an 8-10 record in the Big Ten. Maryland will be seeded ninth in the conference tournament and open play Wednesday against ninth-seeded Wisconsin at Madison Square Garden in New York. ROMAN STUBBS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Dramatic highs — and lows WINTER OLYMPICS Chloe Kim flew, and American hockey fans somehow soared even higher. Mikaela Shiffrin chased history while a curler named John Shuster actually made some. Jessie Diggins and Kikkan Randall dug deep, Shaun White proved that he’s still Shaun White and Mirai Nagasu landed a triple Axel that inspired tears no one wanted to wipe away. For the 241 U.S. Olympians, these games were memorable on some nights, historic on others. But were they a success? It all depends on the measuring stick. The U.S. contingent finished with 23 medals, the fewest since the 13 that Americans won in 1998. They won 28 in Sochi in 2014 and a record 37 at the Vancouver Games in 2010. Three countries topped them in the medal count — Norway (39), Germany (31) and Canada (29). Nine of those U.S. medals were gold, matching the Americans’ totals from each of the past three Winter Olympics. The USOC doesn’t usually make its projections public, but the Associated Press obtained an internal chart that shows the American athletes fell well short of the organization’s PyeongChang projections. The chart indicated that the USOC anticipated a minimum of 25 medals, with an expected target of 37 and an outside possibility of as many as 59. Ski racer Lindsey Vonn is a four-time Olympian who won bronze in the women’s downhill and now has three career medals. She said the medal count is given too much attention. “They’re not necessarily what the Olympics are all about,” she said. “The Olympics are a unifying event, one that has profound impact on the entire world, so to

quantify it in how many medals you have, I think, is not appropriate and doesn’t respect the athletes and what they’ve put in to be at these games.” Of the 23 U.S. medals, 12 were won by women, while the men accounted for nine (plus two others from mixed events). It’s the first time in 20 years that American women topped the men, even though the males on the U.S. team outnumbered the females 134-107.

Shiffrin, the 22-year-old Alpine racer, snowboarder Jamie Anderson and ice dancers Alex and Maia Shibutani were the only Americans to win two medals in PyeongChang. From Shiffrin and Kim, the 17-year old snowboarder who won halfpipe gold, to the women’s hockey team and cross-country racers, many days featured female athletes front and center — and often on the top spot on the podium. past four Olympics, the women’s hockey team beat Canada in a shootout, and Diggins and Randall won the United States’ first women’s cross-country medal. The games also highlighted a divide of sorts among the various disciplines. Of the 23 medals, nearly half — 11 — came from the risky, snowy pursuits of snowboarding and freestyle skiing, including five of the golds. “We’re killing it right now,” said 20-year-old snowboarder Kyle Mack, who won silver in the men’s big air competition Saturday. “I’m super stoked on how we’ve all done.” As happens after every Olympics, each sport will return to the States, celebrate its victories, lick its wounds and figure out how to perform even better in four years’ time. For some, there is more room for growth than others. At these games, for example, the U.S. figure skaters posted their worst finish in women’s singles since World War II, posting ninth-, 10th- and 11th-place finishes. Nagasu’s triple Axel helped the U.S. win a team bronze. The long-track speedskaters improved on their disastrous 2014 showing, but only by a hair, winning one medal — exactly one more than four years ago. And PyeongChang marked the first time in 20 years the U.S. men’s Alpine team failed to win a medal. Teams went through major self-evaluations four years ago, too, and some revamped their approaches. It paid off for some — Shuster, for example, led the United States to its first gold medal in curling. Many of the frustrated U.S. Olympians will get another chance. They’ll soon be preparing for the 2022 Games in Beijing. RICK MAESE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Trust in the Five: This ‘Queer Eye’ comes with heart I never expected that the reboot of “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” would make me cry — in a good way. The original Bravo series (which ran from 2003-2007) cleverly played with stereotypes, sending five gay guys to spiff up a hapless straight man. The Fab Five shared wisdom about neatness, stylish garb and spray tanning. This time around, the streaming Netflix series is just called “Queer Eye.” And

the targeted men aren’t just slobs. Their disorderly lives reflect angst, low self-esteem and hermit-like tendencies. The new Fab Five — a fashion designer, a food-and-wine guy, a grooming expert, an interior decorator and a “culture” consultant — don’t merely remake the exterior man. They try to heal his wounded soul. Take 57-year-old Tom. Thrice divorced, he has an unkempt beard. He likes jean shorts, smoking on his patio while watching TV through the door of his basement apartment and daydreaming about

$108M

his third ex-wife, Abby. “I never hung with gay guys before,” says Tom. Before you know it, they’re all rolling around on mattresses to find one that’s good for Tom’s back. “I’m butt-ugly,” poor Tom declares. The Fab Five buy him a jaunty tweed cap, trim his beard and teach him to use a makeup stick to conceal facial redness. Newly confident Tom asks Abby out. “Will you hold my hand?” he asks.“Sure,” Abby says. How can you not cry? For maximum tear output, tune in to Episode 4. AJ needs to neaten his pad, his hair, his beard. But there’s a bigger issue: He never told his stepmom or his late dad that he’s gay. The Fab Five share stories about how hard it was to come out and to know how to act and dress as a gay man. AJ goes zip lining so he’ll be inspired to take risks in his personal life. “Be your true self,” says

the show’s fashion guru, Tan France, who lives in Utah with his Mormon husband. An emboldened AJ writes a letter to his late dad and reads it to his stepmother: “I am gay. These three words have been a wall between us.” AJ and his stepmom hug and weep. “Queer Eye” has flaws: silly segments of the experts dancing, dull shopping trips. Also, dressing better doesn’t guarantee you’ll be a better person. And backsliding is possible. Yet the show is a triumph, tugging in a genuine way at heartstrings and tear ducts. “When we were saying bye, I started crying and they did, too,” Tom says. You can fake a lot on reality TV, but the messy guys seem truly grateful for the loving attention from five pairs of queer eyes.

The 14th cycle of this competition returns with a few new additions, including Kelly Clarkson as one of the spinning judges, and a “block button” that can prevent another coach from adding a singer to their team.

2 ‘The Looming Tower’ Wednesday on Hulu

Jeff Daniels stars as an FBI agent working in counterterrorism in the days leading up to the Sept. 11 attacks. This 10-episode miniseries is based on a Pulitzer-winning book from writer Lawrence Wright.

3 ‘The 90th Academy Awards’ 8 p.m. Sunday on ABC

Returning host Jimmy Kimmel leads this ceremony, where films from Oscar veterans (Frances McDormand) and first-time hopefuls (Jordan Peele) are honored. (EXPRESS/ THE WASHINGTON POST)

BOX OFFICE RECORDS

The box office take of “Black Panther” this weekend, giving it the secondbest haul for a film in its second week of release (only “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has surpassed it). In two weeks of release, “Black Panther” has grossed $400 million domestically and $704 million worldwide. The new comedy “Game Night” opened in a distant second place, taking in $16.6 million, followed by “Peter Rabbit” with $12.5 million. SENIOR LIVING SOLUTIONS NETFLIX

STREAMING Dreary as a wintry-mix weather forecast and depressing as a dirge, “Seven Seconds,” Veena Sud’s new crime drama for Netflix, possesses an ineffable characteristic that all shows reach for: The undeniable need in the viewer to see a heinous incident through to its resolution, to get a sense that justice might prevail. As with Sud’s previous crime drama “The Killing,” she has adapted “Seven Seconds” from a foreign source (a 2013 Russian film called “The Major”) with a strong premise: On a snowy morning in Jersey City, a tired narcotics officer, Peter Jablonski (Beau Knapp), accidentally hits a teenage boy on a bicycle. Jablonski decides not to call 911, and instead summons his squad leader, Mike DiAngelo (David Lyons). DiAngelo arrives minutes later with two other officers from the team, Wilcox and Osorio (Patrick Murney and Raul Castillo); they discover a trail of blood where the body of Brenton Butler lies in a ditch. He looks dead. DiAngelo decides they’ll drive away like nothing happened. But the boy is still alive

Regina King stars as a woman whose son was nearly killed by a crooked cop.

— barely — when he’s discovered by passers-by a day later. Regina King, who twice won the Emmy for her work in John Ridley’s superb ABC crime anthology “American Crime,” gives a show-stopping performance as Brenton’s stricken mother, Latrice, who, with her husband Isaiah (Russell Hornsby), stands over her comatose son’s hospital bed and demands answers. An overworked assistant prosecutor, K.J. Harper (Clare-Hope Ashitey), offers little relief to the Butlers, but a police detective, Joe Rinaldi (Michael Mosley), prods her into taking the case seriously enough to look for more evidence. With each episode, Sud and her writers demonstrate a sharpened skill for pace and revelation,

along with gracefully subtle ruminations on corruption, racial profiling and — more profoundly — the very nature of morality. Ashitey and Mosley are spot-on as the mismatched Harper and Rinaldi. And, as the evidence begins to mount against DiAngelo and his mooks, the actors’ performances take on a fearsome anxiety — Castillo is especially good at portraying a bad cop’s spiral into remorse. Late in the game, “Seven Seconds” becomes a courtroom drama (and Gretchen Mol steps in as a venomous defense attorney) that is even more suspenseful. We aren’t left hanging, but, consistent with the show’s mood, the outcome isn’t exactly triumphant. HANK STUEVER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Schur invites an old friend for drinks Mike Schur has tapped former “Parks and Recreation” actress Natalie Morales to star in his new NBC comedy pilot, “Abby’s.” According to Deadline, Morales, who has also starred on “BoJack Horseman,” will play Abby, a veteran who opens an unlicensed bar in her backyard. “New Girl” producer Josh Malmuth will write and produce “Abby’s.” (EXPRESS)

TODAY: Slowly but surely, high pressure wedges its way toward us. Mostly cloudy morning skies should turn partly sunny during the afternoon, and temperatures continue on the mild side with highs in the mid-50s to near 60. High pressure finally asserts its dominance, bringing us a mostly clear and cooler night.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) What you do today is likely to rub others the wrong way — until they recognize the method to your madness. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You may have to shake your head and wonder at the cause of another’s inexplicable behavior, but don’t let yourself get caught up in it
