Dialogue across the divide ALEXANDRIA One student questioned her father about his conservative views on gay rights. Another approached a friend from camp about their divergent opinions on President Trump. And a third pressed his cousin on his ardent support for guns. In a climate of political and social divisiveness, when social media often doubles as an echo chamber, educators issued a challenge to 12th-graders at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria that seemed, at once, simple and extraordinary — find someone different from themselves, with whom they disagree on a foundational issue, and talk. It was an exercise in listening and respectful disagreement, an opportunity for students to hear and learn from perspectives different from their own. St udents were, at fi rst, reluctant. “We’re really afraid of talking to people that we disagree with,” English teacher Laurel Taylor said.

Project helps students in high school accept divergent viewpoints

English honors students at T.C. Williams High School share the results of their discussion project “Having Difficult Conversations.”

On Thursday morning, two dozen English honors students clustered around lunch tables at the school, sharing the images and words they chose to document the endeavor. Will Murphy, 17, interviewed a cabin mate from camp who once mentioned he supported Trump. Murphy brushed past the comment back in camp but revisited it for class. He learned his friend lives in a community where most people

back the president. It prompted Murphy to consider what he would do in a situation like that. “I definitely would not want to be an outsider,” Murphy conceded to classmates. “So, I kind of definitely saw where he was coming from.” The conversations were guided mostly by teacher candidates studying at George Mason University. Kristien Zenkov, a professor of education at the university, said he and Taylor wanted students to value perspectives from people whose views don’t align with their own. “We both have noticed — and we’ve talked about and lamented, and really struggled with — the tenor of political discourse in this country,” Zenkov said. It’s a lesson that the students said lawmakers and politicians should heed. “[Politicians] could do the same thing — get a better understanding of people,” Dejah Coleman, 18, said. Student Marie Beke said, “I don’t think they’re listening to each other. I think they’re doing what they think is best for them and what will benefit them, not what will benefit everyone.” DEBBIE TRUONG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The toll between the Capital Beltway and the D.C. line is in effect only during rush hour and in the peak-direction lanes. Some lawmakers say tolling only those commuters traveling in the peakdirection lanes isn’t fair, so they want tolling on both sides. The House passed a budget amendment that would require the state to implement rush-hour tolls in both directions by 2020. The proposal is not included in the Senate budget bill. POLITICS President Trump claimed Monday that he would have rushed into the Florida high school during the mass shooting earlier this month there that killed 17 people, and he called it “disgusting” that an officer assigned to the school didn’t enter the building while the attack was underway. “I really believe I’d run in, even if I didn’t have a weapon,” Trump said during a White House meeting with governors from across the country. The White House meeting focused in part on the school shooting and the wider issue of gun control. Trump has been highly critical of former Broward County sheriff’s deputy Scot Peterson, who remained outside the school during the Feb. 14 massacre in Parkland, Fla. Peterson resigned last week. An attorney for Peterson on Monday denied that his client had acted unprofessionally or cowardly during the shooting. Joseph DiRuzzo said Peterson didn’t go inside the school because it had sounded as if the shooting was happening outside the building. Also at the Monday meeting, Trump suggested he would act to regulate “bump stocks” even if Congress does not. The devices

The device was not used in the shooting in Parkland, where the gunman wielded a legally purchased AR-15 semi-automatic weapon. nation+world As the U.N. scrambles, Russia orders daily ‘humanitarian pause’ SYRIA Russia said Monday it had ordered a daily five-hour truce for a rebel-held enclave outside Damascus, even as a more extensive 30-day cease-fire approved by the United Nations Security Council this weekend failed to quiet Syria’s warring parties. The “humanitarian pause” ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin, an ally of the Syrian government, appeared aimed at showcasing Russia’s influence as world powers scrambled to halt some of the worst bloodshed of Syria’s civil war.

Nearly 500 people have been killed and at least 1,500 wounded in a ferocious, week-long assault by government forces against eastern Ghouta, one of the last rebel strongholds, according to the U.N. The temporary truce for eastern Ghouta would begin today and be in effect daily from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to “avoid civilian casualties,” Russia’s Interfax news agency reported, quoting Defense Minister Serfei Shoigu. The truce would allow civilians to evacuate via a “humanitarian corridor,” he said. The U.N. says that more than 700 people are in need of medical evacuation from the area. Such pauses in fighting across Syria have had varying degrees

of success. And “humanitarian corridors” or evacuation routes have been plagued by logistical problems and acts of sabotage.

On Sunday, Syria’s government launched a ground offensive and a suspected chlorine bomb attack against the enclave. Officials from Russia and Iran, which also backs Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, have said that operations against “terrorists” — opponents of the Syrian regime — will continue. According to the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, there are over 393,000 people in need of humanitarian assistance in Ghouta. “Eastern Ghouta cannot wait,” U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres told the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday. “It is high time to stop this hell on Earth.”

Supreme Court not intervening in DACA case The U.S. Supreme Court heard two high-profile cases Monday, choosing not to act on the DACA program (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) while also listening to arguments on a case crucial for unions that represent federal workers. (AP)

DACA stays in lower courts The court rejected the White House’s unusual bid to bypass a federal appeals court and get the justices to intervene in the fate of a program that protects hundreds of thousands of young immigrants from deportation. The decision on “Dreamers” means the case will likely have to work its way through lower courts before any SCOTUS ruling is possible. That could take months, effectively blocking the Trump administration from ending the program on March 5, as planned.

A hail of a lot of cars

Companies like Uber, Lyft promised to ease traffic, but studies show the opposite

N.Y. remembers trade center bombing of ’93

RICHARD VOGEL (AP)

TRANSPORTATION One promise of ride-hailing companies like Uber and Lyft was fewer cars clogging city streets. But studies suggest the opposite: that ride-hailing companies are pulling riders off buses, subways, bicycles and their own feet and putting them in cars instead. Uber and Lyft argue that in Boston, for instance, they complement public transit by connecting riders to hubs like Logan Airport and South Station. But they have not released their own specific data about rides, leaving studies up to outside researchers. And the impact of all those cars is becoming clear, said Christo Wilson, a professor of computer science at Boston’s Northeastern University, who has looked at Uber’s practice of surge pricing during heavy volume. “The emerging consensus is that ride-sharing [is] increasing congestion,” Wilson said. One study included surveys of 944 ride-hailing users over four weeks in late 2017 in the Boston area. Nearly 6 in 10 said they would have used public transportation, walked, biked or skipped the trip if the ride-hailing apps weren’t available. The report also found many riders aren’t using hailed rides to connect to a subway or bus line, but instead as a separate mode of transit, said Alison Felix, one of the report’s authors. “Ride-sharing is pulling from and not complementing public transportation,” she said. It’s not quite what Uber founder Travis Kalanick suggested in 2015 when he said, “We envision a world where there’s no more traffic in Boston in five years.” A study released in December found that large increases in the number of taxis and ride-sharing

Reports show that ride-hailing companies like Lyft and Uber are pulling riders away from public transportation.

vehicles are contributing to slow traffic in Manhattan’s central business district. It recommended policies to prevent further increases in “the number of vacant vehicles occupied only by drivers waiting for their next trip request.” In San Francisco, a study released in June found that on a typical weekday, ride-hailing drivers make more than 170,000 vehicle trips, about 12 times the number of taxi trips, and that the trips are concentrated in the densest and most congested parts of the city. And a survey released in October of more than 4,000 adults in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, the San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle and Washington, D.C., concluded that 49 to 61 percent of ride-hailing trips would have not been made at all — or would have been achieved by walking, biking or public transit — if the option didn’t exist.

Express Pool vs. buses In what could be a new wrinkle, an Uber service called Express Pool may compete directly with mass transit. Express Pool links riders who want to travel to similar destinations. Riders walk a short distance to be picked up at a common location and are dropped off near their final destinations — essentially, how a bus or subway line functions. It was tested in November in San Francisco and Boston, and found enough riders to support it 24 hours a day. Service was rolled out last week in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Washington, Miami, San Diego and Denver, with more cities to follow. (AP)

The Boston study found that the main reason people opted for ride-hailing was speed. Even those with a public transit pass would drop it for ride-hailing despite the higher cost. Sarah Wu, a graduate student

EU, Arab League affirm Jerusalem must be joint capital of Israel, future Palestinian state

at Boston University, uses Uber less than once a week but more often if she has guests. She lives near a subway line but will opt for Uber if it looks like public transit will be a hassle. “I would prefer to have the Uber take me there directly rather than having to transfer several times and wait at a bus stop,” said Wu, who doesn’t own a car. A spokesman for Lyft stressed that ride-hailing could reduce the number of personally owned cars on the roads. “Lyft is focused on making personal car ownership optional by getting more people to share a ride, helping to reduce car ownership, and partnering with public transportation,” spokesman Adrian Durbin said in a statement. Similarly, Uber is hoping to wean drivers from their cars in part by encouraging its carpooling services, spokeswoman Alix Anfang said. STEVE LeBLANC (AP)

NEW YORK The World Trade Center’s operators apologized Monday to relatives of people killed in the 1993 bombing there, saying the country was unprepared for an attack that foreshadowed 9/11. Victims’ families, survivors and first responders marked the bombing’s 25th anniversary on the Sept. 11 memorial plaza. They observed a silent moment, read victims’ names and laid roses. “We were not ready for what visited us that day. Americans were not ready for what visited them that day,” said Kevin O’Toole, chairman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. “And for that, I say: I’m sorry. And we are sorry.” The blast in an underground parking garage on Feb. 26, 1993, killed six people, one of them pregnant. It injured more than 1,000 and forced an estimated 50,000 to flee the trade center’s twin towers in a scene of smoke, fear and confusion that would be magnified on Sept. 11, 2001. While there was no direct link to 9/11, convicted bombing ringleader Ramzi Yousef is a nephew of self-proclaimed 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, and another man convicted in the plot vowed that “the World Trade Center will continue to be one of our targets.” For families of the bombing victims, “ ‘93 is as big as 9/11,” said Pat Rodriguez, who lost his pregnant sister. “It’s a place in history that you shouldn’t forget.” JENNIFER PELTZ (AP)

THREE POINTERS

Daunting stretch

SALLY JENKINS | THE WASHINGTON POST

A call for reform: Exploitative USOC must be changed Every four years, athletes scrape the grime and graft off the Olympics, and restore them to magnificence. We should demand that the performers become the full focus of this country’s Olympic movement. Congress should knock down the U.S. Olympic Committee and get rid of the bilkers who skim cash off the sweat of our greatest competitors. The USOC has nerve taking any credit for a gold medal in women’s ice hockey, given that the team had to threaten to strike just to get decent meal money from USA Hockey. USOC chief executive Scott Blackmun made $1 million in salary and bonuses in 2016. Until last spring, our women’s hockey players got $6,000 in an entire four-year cycle. The USOC is defrauding our champions. Propagandaspouting executives maximize their own earnings while devoting only the barest cash minimums and lip service to the actual care of athletes. As The Washington Post has reported, the USOC is supposed to be a nonprofit, yet 129 of its staff make over six figures, and 14 of its execs are paid more than $200,000. The USOC’s so-called “chief of sport performance” Alan Ashley earned nearly $500,000

in 2016. The organization’s board of directors handed out five bonuses of $100,000 or more in 2016, tax records show. Among the beneficiaries were Blackmun, Ashley and two in-house marketers who already were making six figures. The bonus for a U.S. athlete who won a gold medal? Just $37,500. The chair of the USOC board is Larry Probst, who devoted much of his adult life to ripping off college athletes as the CEO of Electronic Arts. For years, EA used likenesses of NCAA stars without their permission, until a court put a stop to it. The USOC is filled with liability-dodging desk jockeys, who took until 2014 to institute even basic child-protection policies, despite years of problems. In 2015, USOC lawyer Gary Johansen was deposed in the case of a taekwondo athlete who alleged she was raped by her coach at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado. According to Johansen, it wasn’t the responsibility of the USOC to protect her from sexual abuse. The athlete’s attorney asked, what then does the term “Team USA” even mean? Johansen testified: “That’s a branding terminology.” There you have it. Three congressional committees are investigating the gymnastics abuse scandal, and they should broaden their

Larry Probst, top, was CEO of EA Sports, which used the likenesses of NCAA athletes to make money, before he became chair of the USOC board, which profits from Olympians such as the women’s hockey players, above.

Denver mulls 2030 bid In 1976, Denver became the only city to withdraw as an Olympic host after winning a bid. Four decades after deciding the Winter Olympics would be too costly and complicated, the city is mulling a run at hosting in 2030. Mayor Michael Hancock has convened an exploratory committee that includes local business leaders and ex-Bronco Peyton Manning. The committee is mulling a pitch for a privately funded games at a cost of $2 billion, without any mega-projects. Salt Lake City, which hosted the 2002 Winter Games, has already announced plans for a 2030 bid. The 2022 Games will be in Beijing; the site in 2026 is undetermined. (AP)

Act in 1978, and Congress should reform it now. Congress should dismiss the entire USOC executive staff and board of directors for cause, and appoint a special chairman charged with forming a new body that serves athletes. Then, it should mandate that fully 50 percent of all revenues go directly to competitors and team stipends. The NBA and MLB split 50 percent of revenues with athletes, because they realize there is no marketing without them. U.S. Olympians will endure almost anything to chase greatness. It makes you sick wondering how many potential champions have been knocked off podiums by abuse, or poverty, or disillusion. Knock. It. Down. And burn the remains.

Washington is 1-2 against Milwaukee this season. The last time they played, Giannis Antetokounmpo had 27 points and 20 rebounds.

Kevin Durant dropped 31 points in a 120-117 win over the Wizards in October. The Warriors began Monday tied for the NBA high in wins (46).

1 Wizards vs. Raptors 8 p.m. Friday, ESPN

DeMar DeRozan averaged 27.3 points in his past three games against the Wizards. Toronto entered Monday with the top seed in the East.

League to fine Jones $2M for detrimental conduct The NFL plans to fine Cowboys owner Jerry Jones more than $2 million for conduct detrimental to the league, according to a person familiar with the situation. Another source confirmed the fine but added that it amounts to an effort by the NFL to recoup legal expenses associated with Jones’ actions regarding Commissioner Roger Goodell’s contract and, to a lesser extent, the case of Ezekiel Elliott, who served a six-game domestic violence suspension after multiple appeals. Jones had been warned by the NFL’s compensation committee that he was guilty of detrimental conduct based on failed efforts, including hiring an attorney and threatening to sue the committee, to prevent the five-year extension of Goodell from being completed last year. The U.S. Open is going to a two-hole aggregate playoff, the last of the four majors to do away with an 18-hole playoff. The change would be used at Shinnecock Hills in June if there is a tie after 72 holes. A tie after two playoff holes would result in sudden death. The last U.S. Open playoff was 10 years ago, when Tiger Woods beat Rocco Mediate in 19 holes. (AP)

After healthy offseason, Nationals’ ace expects to have his best year yet MLB There will come a time when Max Scherzer will reach his peak, and the downhill slide that conquers all professional athletes will begin. He just doesn’t think he is there yet. Not after consecutive Cy Young Awards. Not after five straight seasons of 200-plus

innings. Not after leading the National League in strikeouts each of the past two years. “I don’t know,” Scherzer said. “I may be better in 2018.” Scherzer won’t divulge the details, but he is certain there are areas for growth. Five months shy of his 34th birthday, Scherzer officially began his quest for improvement Sunday in West Palm Beach, Fla., when he slung a fastball by Atlanta’s Ronald Acuna, the

consensus top prospect in baseball, for strike one. After getting Acuna to ground out, Scherzer missed his spot with a 1-0 fastball, and Dansby Swanson swatted it over the wall.

Family of Orlando Cepeda, 80, says baseball Hall of Famer making “major” progress in heart recovery

“That’s good,” Scherzer said. “Get those solo shots out of the way now. You can hit as many ... as you want in spring training.” Swanson’s homer was the only damage inflicted in Scherzer’s

two innings of a 9-3 win. He threw 23 pitches, struck out three and walked none. His fastball sat at 93 mph. He emerged satisfied. Last year, Scherzer didn’t throw his first bullpen session until the first week of March because of a stress fracture in a knuckle in his right ring finger. He proceeded to win his third Cy Young in five seasons anyway. This spring, he threw an intense, 60-pitch bullpen session a day after reporting to camp. After his first spring start, he said he expects to reach yet another level. “In my mind, the peak is higher,” Scherzer said. “You can see it however you want. I know what’s on my mind.” JORGE CASTILLO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

FITNESS ADVICE

Strengthen your wrists

Cravings on your mind? What your brain and body are telling you when you feel the urge to give in to that cookie NUTRITION Some people think that cravings mean their bodies need nutrients found in the food they’re fixating on. Other people see cravings as a sign of weakness and either try to white-knuckle it through or throw up their hands and declare themselves powerless. Although cravings can be based on a nutritional need, most stem from other factors. So should you indulge cravings or ignore them? The answer depends on what your craving is really telling you.

Cravings vs. impulses Some cravings would be better described as an urge or impulse. A true craving is more of a slow burn that will smolder until you eventually satisfy it. An impulse is more of a flash in the pan — it comes on suddenly and will burn out on its own if you let it. Unfortunately, our brains seem to be more wired to respond to impulses than to think beyond them. One technique for dealing with impulse-type

cravings is to “surf the urge.” To do this, imagine your craving as an ocean wave. Watch it as it builds gradually, getting stronger and stronger until it peaks and then gradually dissipates. Rather than deny the urge, actively surf it. If your craving for, say, a cookie just won’t go away, get the best cookie you can find, and sit and savor it. What doesn’t work is chasing the craving with foods you consider more “acceptable.” If what you truly want is a cookie, all the apples or cinnamon rice cakes in the world won’t satisfy you.

Environmental cues Do you crave popcorn the moment you step into a movie theater? Get the urge for chocolate each day at 3 p.m.? If you’ve come to associate certain times, places or activities with a particular food, what probably started as a craving has morphed into mindless eating, then on to pure habit. To tackle this, practice

Is it hunger? It can be challenging to distinguish cravings from true hunger, especially if you aren’t in touch with your body’s internal hunger cues. Cravings tend to be more specific than hunger, so if you feel like you need to eat but don’t have a particular food in mind, it’s probably hunger. If you are laser-focused on one food, it’s probably a craving. C.D.

asking yourself, “Am I hungry?” whenever you have the urge to eat. If the answer is no, ask yourself, “Why do I want to eat this?” If your answer is something like “Because it’s there” or “Because it’s what I always do,” consider experimenting with not having the food to see how it feels.

Emotional needs Do you crave ice cream or pasta when you’re feeling stressed, sad, angry or lonely? A 2014 study co-authored by psychologist Traci Mann, author of “Secrets

Orangetheory Fitness to open new location this summer at 330 Seventh St. SE

From the Eating Lab,” found that eating comfort foods doesn’t improve mood any faster than eating nothing at all. Plus, emotional eating doesn’t help you get to the heart of what’s bothering you.

Food addiction The types of foods that tend to trigger cravings — foods that contain the trifecta of added sugar, salt and fat — often get et labeled “addictive.” Although h some research suggests that at we can develop substance-like e addictions to sugar, this is conntroversial. Sugar has been shown n to light up the reward center in n the brain, but food is supposed d to be rewarding. And that reeward response? It’s stronger r in individuals who are dieting g or restricting sugar. Addiction n aside, we’re more likely to crave ve what we can’t have. If you deny y yourself chocolate, you will probbably crave it. If you love a certain n food, find a balanced way to innclude it in your life. CARRIE DENNETT TT

“Yoga wrists.” Is there such a thing? It’s that discomfort yogis might feel in downward dog or crow. “Wrist pain is one of the most common issues we see in yoga,” says Alyson Shade, yoga instructor and co-owner of Realignment Studio in the District. “But it can be addressed with proper modifications and progressions.” When the wrist is hiked upward — extended — it puts stress on all the soft tissue, especially tendons, in the wrist. High-stress activities like yoga can trigger pain and eventually injury. To avoid the pain, we need to give our wrists a chance to get stronger gradually. Also, strengthening the core and improving flexibility can help yogis avoid bringing their weight forward into the shoulders and wrists during ce certain positions. GABRIELLA BOST BOSTON (TWP)

DR. ANDREA BONIOR BAGGAGE CHECK

The father who shares too much

BEN CLAASSEN III (FOR EXPRESS)

Q. My longtime friend is a

Q. My husband and I disagree about how much of our kids we should put on social media. I thought I had gotten through to him about the safety and privacy issues, but I discovered he has been posting photos of our kids on social media beyond Facebook, and he won’t take responsibility because he says I only told him not to do it on Facebook. I am furious he was doing it on the sly, and meanwhile he says I am paranoid. STUCK

When there’s a fundamental disagreement about child rearing, the first option, of course, is compromise. Another is to let the parent who cares more/ knows more/dominates the argument call the shots. That he used the Facebook-versusother-social-media technicality means he doesn’t really share your philosophy. I do, admittedly — but I’m not raising kids with your husband, so it’s

time for a reality check. Identify the parts of your argument that matter most to you and why: Research? Examples? A gut feeling? And then listen to what matters most to him: Connection with others? Showing off his kids? Being seen as an involved dad? The more you can help him meet those needs in other ways, the easier time he’ll have seeing the validity of your views.

constant one-upper. I think she does it out of insecurity, not meanness. I’m talking about the “Hey, I get to go to New Orleans for a wedding!” “Cool! Did I tell you about the tropical luxury Bahamas vacation I’m going on in four years?” type of stuff. DRIVING ME CRAZY

If you’ve got a long history with her, address it soon. It’s much more damaging to the friendship for you to continue to be annoyed by this, potentially growing resentful. So, choose an approach that works well with the style you two already have. Teasing her gently in the moment when it happens, to raise her awareness?

Bringing it up in the context of an analysis of each other’s personalities? Letting spill how much it bothers you in a heart-to-heart over margaritas? Be specific, and be gentle: “Sometimes you’re so excited to share how you relate to what I’m saying that my own news feels a little dismissed. Do you want me to tell you when this happens?” It might be a hard habit for her to break, but if you can motivate her to try — by not making her feel like a bad friend for it — then she’ll also be well-served by looking at where the urges come from in the first p place. TELEVISION Circumstances sometimes ask us to be bad. That’s the basic premise of NBC’s engaging, fed-upwith-sexism caper “Good Girls,” which premiered Monday night. The first of the “Girls,” Beth (Christina Hendricks), is a stay-at-home mom who has just learned that her husband (Matthew Lillard) has been frittering away their life savings. The second is Annie (Mae Whitman), a single mom struggling to provide for her tweenager (Izzy Stannard). The third, Ruby (Retta), is a wife and mother facing the

‘Good Girls’ leans hard on girl power counterfeiting cartel that comes looking for its money — escalate. “Good Girls” — created by Jenna Bans of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal” — exhibits skill for juggling a story that is dark, funny and touching all at once. And Hendricks, Retta and Whitman give strong performances. But the show occasionally stumbles in its nods to a feminist subtext, which should be self-evident. No one asks a male character to explain himself while he’s breaking bad. Should “Good Girls” be any different?
