Hawaii man gives master class in poor decisions, understatement

A Tennessee man was jailed on felony charges after appearing to dip his testicles into a container of salsa that a customer had ordered online. The delivery driver (who was not the dipper) allegedly recorded it and posted a video online, saying, “This is what you get when you give an 89-cent tip for an almost 30-minute drive.” Dinner Delivered said the driver who recorded the video has been fired. The company issued a refund for the tainted food. (AP)

Alabama police say a dispute over crab legs at a dinner buffet ended in a brawl that left two facing charges. Huntsville police officer Gerald Johnson was eating at the Meteor Buffet when a fight broke out. He told WHNT-TV that diners were using tongs as fencing swords, plates were shattering and a woman was beating a man. Johnson said diners waited for crab legs for over 10 minutes and lost their tempers once the food came out. (AP)

A Hawaii man convicted of breaking into a police station and setting off an alarm was sentenced to probation. The Maui News reported Paul Kossman was sentenced earlier this month. Prosecutor Jeffery Temas said Kossman was inebriated when he crawled through a bathroom window at the Hana station and pulled an alarm. Kossman said he didn’t plan to steal anything, but it was “something that happened that shouldn’t have.” (AP)

BASEBALL The course at the Washington Nationals’ bullpen cart driver tryout was supposedly shaped like a curly W. Racing president Teddy Roosevelt stood in the middle of the course, and if a driver made a wrong turn or drove out of bounds, he’d chase them with an orange traffic cone. The Nationals held tryouts Tuesday for the job of bullpen cart driver. The team had posted the opening earlier this month. Within three days, the team received 432 applications, according to Tom Davis, the club’s entertainment director. People offered to relocate from across the country for the honor of driving pitchers from the bullpen to the area beside the home dugout. But only 21 lucky hopefuls got to drive the course in the center field concourse of Nationals Park. Applicant Ted, a retired Library of Congress administrator from Davidsonville, Md., boasted that he once rode his motorcycle cross-country, making him more

of driving experience and to promise to attend all 81 Washington home games. Participants were timed, but the personality question was more important: Can you remain chill when Sean Doolittle sits down in the shotgun seat, ready to close out a tight game? “We all want to have fun,” Davis said, “but it’s a serious situation. You’re driving Major League Baseball players.” And that means knowing when

to be jovial and when to shut up. The team is set to announce its new hire by the end of the week. Washington’s pitchers will not have any input on the selection, to the chagrin of Doolittle. “If they’re going to be driving me and my friends around, I would like to at least have some input,” he said earlier this month. “At least when you call for a Lyft or an Uber you get the rating and stuff like that.” JACOB BOGAGE (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Supreme Court seems to favor Md. Peace Cross

D.C. bald eagle missing for weeks returns to nest

Justices look inclined to retain WWI memorial on public land near D.C.

KEVIN WOLF (AP)

COURTS The Supreme Court seemed inclined Wednesday to rule that a 40-foot-tall Peace Cross that stands on public land in Maryland is constitutional, but to shy away from a sweeping ruling. The case the justices heard arguments in is being closely watched because it involves the place of religious symbols in public life. But the particular memorial at issue is a nearly 100-year-old cross that was built in a D.C. suburb as a memorial to residents who died in World War I. Before arguments in the case, it seemed that the memorial’s supporters, including the Trump administration, had the upper hand based on the court’s conservative makeup and its decision to take up the matter. On Wednesday, even liberal justices Elena Kagan and Stephen Breyer suggested they could join a narrow ruling upholding this particular memorial. Kagan noted that the cross is a symbol linked with soldiers killed in World War I. “When you go into a World War I battlefield, there are Stars of David there, but because those battlefields were just rows and rows and rows of crosses, the cross became, in people’s minds, the pre-eminent symbol of how to memorialize World War I dead,”

RACIAL SLUR FALLOUT

Mary Ann LaQuay, whose uncle’s name is on a cross-shaped World War I memorial in Maryland, speaks Wednesday outside the Supreme Court.

she said, adding that there are no religious words on the Maryland cross and that it sits in an area with other war memorials. Breyer, for his part, asked a lawyer arguing for the cross’s challengers what she thought about saying that “history counts” and that “We’re not going to have people trying to tear down historical monuments even here.” The cross’s challengers include three area residents and the D.C.-based American Humanist Association, a group that includes atheists and agnostics. They argue that the cross’s location on public land violates the First Amendment’s establishment clause, which prohibits

the government from favoring one religion over others. They say the cross should be moved to private property or modified into a nonreligious monument such as a slab or obelisk. The cross’s defenders include The American Legion, which raised money for the monument, and Maryland officials who took over maintenance of the cross nearly 60 years ago to preserve it and address traffic safety concerns. Maryland officials say the cross, sometimes called the “Peace Cross,” doesn’t violate the Constitution because it has a secular purpose and meaning. A decision is expected by the end of June. The leaders of the Maryland Democratic Party and the state’s Republican Party are supporting calls for the resignation of a state lawmaker after she used a racial slur for African-Americans at an after-hours gathering. Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, who chairs the state’s Democratic Party, and Republican Party Chairman Dirk Haire both called on Wednesday for Del. Mary Ann Lisanti to resign. Lisanti, a Democrat, apologized Tuesday for making the comment last month in reference to Prince George’s County, which is largely black. Cummings said AfricanAmericans make up about a third of voters in Lisanti’s district, and they deserve to be represented by a person who is considerate of their views. (AP)

RESTORED DRIVER’S LICENSES

The number of people who had their driving privileges restored last year after D.C. stopped suspending driver’s licenses for failure to pay some traffic fines, according to a Department of Motor Vehicles report released this month. The DMV made the change after D.C. passed a law to end such suspensions, which advocates say unfairly punish poor people by keeping them from getting out of debt. The change affected 65,922 drivers, according to the report — 50,401 people who don’t live in D.C. and 15,521 who do. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Justice, the male bald eagle that had been missing from a nest in Washington for about three weeks, was apparently spotted Wednesday back at his old perch. Eagle experts said he made an appearance at the nest, which sits 110 feet up an oak tree at the D.C. Police Academy grounds in Southwest. After Justice left, two other male eagles showed up to try to court female eagle Liberty. Then she took off, probably due to stress, experts said. The nest contains two eggs, but experts doubt they will hatch. (TWP) MARYLAND

House gives initial OK to $15 minimum wage The Maryland House of Delegates gave initial approval Wednesday to legislation requiring a $15 minimum wage. A vote to give it final approval is scheduled for Friday. After that, it would be considered in the Senate. Suspect in terror plot against Dems indicted A Coast Guard officer accused of being a white supremacist who compiled a hit list of prominent Democrats was indicted Wednesday on firearms and drug charges. A federal grand jury in Maryland indicted Christopher Paul Hasson, 49, on charges of illegal possession of firearm silencers; possession of firearms by a drug addict and unlawful user; and possession of a controlled substance. Hasson has been detained since Feb. 15. Hasson hasn’t been charged with any terrorism-related offenses. U.S. Attorney Robert Hur said authorities are still gathering evidence. (AP)

Pakistan downs Indian jets KASHMIR Pakistan’s military said Wednesday it shot down two Indian warplanes in the disputed region of Kashmir and captured a pilot, answering an airstrike a day earlier by Indian fighter jets inside Pakistan and raising tensions between the nucleararmed rivals to a level unseen in two decades. Within hours, Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan went on television urging peace talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying both countries needed to step back from the brink and warning that “miscalculations” could drag their two countries into a war that neither side would benefit from. “Let’s sit together to talk to find a solution,” Khan said. There was no reply from Modi, but India acknowledged one of its air force planes was “lost” in skirmishes with Pakistan and that its pilot was “missing in action.” Pakistan’s military later circulated a video of a man with a mustache who identified himself as the Indian pilot, sipping tea and responding to questions,

International reaction On Wednesday, the Trump administration did not immediately respond to the confrontation between Pakistan and India. down Wednesday morning in Kashmir, a mountainous region claimed by both countries since 1947. One of the downed planes crashed in Pakistan’s part of Kashmir, while the other went down in an Indian-controlled section of the Himalayan region, Pakistan’s army spokesman Maj. Gen. Asif Ghafoor said. India’s External Affairs Ministry spokesman, Raveesh Kumar, said one of India’s MiG-21 fighter aircraft was missing and India was still “ascertaining” whether its pilot was in Pakistan’s custody. He said one Pakistani aircraft was shot down, something Pakistan denied. Residents on both sides of the de facto frontier, the so-called Line of Control, said there were exchanges of fire between the two sides through the night into Wednesday morning. The latest casualties came a day after a pre-dawn airstrike and incursion by India that New Delhi said targeted a terrorist training camp in northwestern Pakistan. India said it was pursuing a group called Jaishe-Mohammad, which claimed responsibility for a Feb. 14 suicide bombing on the Indian side of Kashmir that killed more than 40 troops. CBO warns U.S. could run out of money ECONOMY The Treasury Department will probably run out of money to pay the nation’s bills by the end of September unless Congress takes action, the Congressional Budget Office said Tuesday, raising a scenario that could cause financial havoc and shake the foundations of the global economy. The U.S. government has been spending more money than it brings in for years, forcing the Treasury to borrow money by issuing bonds. But Treasury is allowed to issue only so much debt before it bumps up against the “debt ceiling,” a borrowing limit set by Congress. Congress had previously agreed to suspend that limit until March 2. But when the limit comes back into effect, Treasury will not technically have the authority to borrow additional funds. Congress would have to act to resume that authority. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, above, was asked Tuesday about what would happen to financial markets if Congress does not act soon. “It’s beyond even considering that the United States would not honor all of its obligations and pay them when due,” Powell said. “It is just something that can’t even be considered.” Powell said merely bumping up against the debt limit creates “a lot of uncertainty” and serves as a “distraction from what is otherwise a pretty good economy.” HEATHER LONG (TWP)

Chicago set to elect its first black female mayor CHICAGO A former federal prosecutor and a county board leader will face each other in a runoff to become Chicago’s first black female mayor. The two led a large field in Tuesday’s election, including a member of the Daley family, which has dominated the city’s politics for much of the past six decades. Political outsider Lori Lightfoot, who was a federal prosecutor in northern Illinois, and Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle were the top votegetters among 14 candidates, but neither received more than the 50 percent needed to avoid an April 2 runoff. The winner will succeed Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who did not seek re-election. Among those they defeated

was William Daley, who served as chief of staff for President Obama but has never held major elected office. Lightfoot, the first openly gay woman to run for Chicago mayor, has been critical of efforts to reform the Chicago Police Department in the wake of the 2014 fatal shooting of black teenager Laquan McDonald by a white police officer. Preckwinkle, who leads the county’s Democratic Party, also made a campaign issue out of

McDonald’s shooting. She previously served 19 years on the City Council and was a Chicago Public Schools teacher. Emanuel’s decision not to seek a third term created a wide-open race in a transitional election for a city struggling to shed its reputation for corruption, police brutality and street violence. Although the election was nonpartisan, the candidates were all attached in varying degrees to the Democratic Party. The Republican Party has virtually disappeared from the city. Turnout was low Tuesday. Jim Allen, spokesman for the Chicago Board of Election, said that by late afternoon turnout was around 27 percent of registered voters. HERBERT G. MCCANN (AP)

Cohen: Trump is a criminal

MATT MCCLAIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen testifies Wednesday before the House Oversight and Reform Committee.

COURTESY OF LANNY DAVIS VIA AP

POLITICS In a damning depiction of Donald Trump, the president’s former lawyer on Wednesday cast him as a “racist” and a “con man” who used his inner circle to cover up politically damaging allegations about sex and lied throughout the 2016 election campaign about his business interests in Russia. Michael Cohen, who previously pleaded guilty to lying to Congress, told lawmakers that Trump had advance knowledge and embraced the news that emails damaging to Hillary Clinton would be released during the campaign. But he also said he had no “direct evidence” that Trump or his aides colluded with Russia to get him elected, the primary question of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. Cohen became the first Trump insider to pull back the curtain on a version of the inner workings of Trump’s political and business operations. He likened the president to a “mobster” who demanded blind loyalty. “I am not protecting Mr. Trump anymore,” Cohen declared. His testimony unfolded as Trump met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, offering stark TV counterprogramming to the president’s official duties. Trump lashed out on Twitter, saying Cohen “did bad things unrelated to Trump” and “is lying in order to reduce his prison time.” Cohen gave lawmakers his first-person account of how he arranged hush money payments to a porn actress and a Playboy model who said they had sex with Trump. He described a February 2017 conversation with Trump in the Oval Office in which the president reassured him that reimbursement checks had been sent through FedEx.

MELINA MARA (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The president’s former lawyer testifies that his old boss broke the law and lied to the American people

Cohen presented two checks that he says Trump wrote him as reimbursement for hush money payments.

Cohen agreed to say Trump was “not knowledgeable” about the transactions. He expressed regret for lying to Melania Trump about the payments. In one revelation, Cohen said prosecutors in New York were investigating conversations Trump or his advisers had with him after his office and hotel room was raided by the FBI last April.

Members of Congress, including Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, questioned Cohen for roughly seven hours.

Cohen said he could not discuss that conversation because it remains under investigation. The hearing proceeded along parallel tracks, with Democrats focusing on allegations against Trump while Republicans sought to undermine the credibility of Cohen, who will soon report to prison for a three-year sentence. As Republicans blasted him

as a convicted liar, Cohen called himself a “fool” and acknowledged his own failings. He warned lawmakers of the perils of blind loyalty to Trump. “You make mistakes in life and I’ve owned them and I’ve taken responsibility for them, and I’m paying a huge price, as is my family,” Cohen said during his roughly seven-hour testimony.

On the matter of racism, Cohen said the president made comments “disparaging AfricanAmericans,” saying that black people would never vote for him because they were “too stupid.” In an allegation relating to Mueller’s probe, Cohen said he overheard Trump confidant Roger Stone telling the candidate in the summer of 2016 that WikiLeaks would dump damaging information about Clinton. According to Cohen, Trump put Stone on speakerphone and Stone told him that he had communicated with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and that there would soon be an email dump damaging to Clinton’s campaign. Trump responded by saying, “Wouldn’t that be great,” Cohen said. Stone disputed that account Wednesday, and Cohen’s claims contradict the president’s assertions that he was in the dark. Cohen also suggested Trump implicitly told him to lie about a Moscow real estate project. Cohen has admitted to lying about the project, which he says Trump knew about as Cohen was negotiating with Russia during the campaign. Cohen said Trump “would look me in the eye and tell me there’s no business in Russia.” Cohen said he does not have direct evidence that Trump colluded with the Russian government during the election, but that he has “suspicions,” particularly about a June 2016 meeting between the president’s oldest son and a Kremlin-connected lawyer. “I wouldn’t use the word ‘colluding.’ Was there something odd about the back-and-forth praise with President Putin?” Cohen said. “Yes, but I’m not really sure I can answer the question about collusion.” MARY CLARE JALONICK, ERIC TUCKER AND MICHAEL R. Cohen’s long day on the Hill yielded dramatic moments Here are a few highlights from Michael Cohen’s testimony that viewers may have missed in the exhausting coverage of the daylong proceedings. (AP/THE WASHINGTON POST) Trump’s education

‘Pants on Fire’ sign

Cohen said Trump directed him to threaten legal action against the colleges and high school he attended if they released his grades or SAT scores. Cohen provided a May 2015 letter he penned to the president of Fordham, which the university confirmed it received. Fordham says it is bound by federal law barring the release of student records.

Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona and other Republicans repeatedly said that Cohen can’t be trusted for what he says about Trump because Cohen last year pleaded guilty to lying to Congress. At the hearing, Gosar put up a sign with Cohen’s face and text that read “Liar, Liar Pants on Fire.” He also called Trump’s former fixer a “pathological liar.”

Debate about racism

Running for office?

Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., had HUD administrator Lynne Patton, who is black, stand behind him as he challenged Cohen’s characterization of Trump as having expressed racist views. Later, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., said it is “racist in itself … to use a black woman as a prop.” Meadows objected to what he interpreted as Tlaib calling him a racist.

Under questioning from Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-N.C., Cohen declined to rule out that he would one day pursue a book or movie deal, or run for political office in New York. Foxx was trying to press Cohen on the idea that he was motivated to testify to remain in the public eye, which Cohen disputed. He said he hasn’t taken any book or TV offers … yet.

‘He speaks in a code’

Moving final remarks

Cohen said Trump “in his way” communicated that he wanted his former lawyer to lie to Congress about a Trump Tower Moscow deal he was negotiating during the 2016 presidential campaign. “He doesn’t give you questions, he doesn’t give you orders,” Cohen said. “He speaks in a code, and I understand the code because I’ve been around him for a decade.”

In extemporaneous and occasionally rousing final remarks, Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings, D-Md., sought to portray Cohen’s path to redemption as one the country should follow. “If we as a nation did not give people an opportunity after they made mistakes to change their lives, a whole lot of people would not do very well,” Cummings said.

President ‘satisfied’ with progress of talks with N. Korea’s leader

HANOI, VIETNAM President Trump offered a public embrace of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Wednesday as they opened a two-day nuclear summit in Hanoi, Vietnam, referring to the brutal authoritarian ruler as “my friend” and stating that he is “satisfied” with the progress of their negotiations. “Some people would like to see it be quicker. I’m satisfied; you’re satisfied,” Trump told Kim before a private, one-on-one meeting, followed by a social dinner with a small group of aides at the five-star Metropole hotel. Trump said he believed their first summit in Singapore was a success and added that their meetings in Hanoi “will be equal to or greater than the first.” He held up Vietnam as a model for growth for North Korea, which he said has “unlimited” potential. “I look forward to watching it happen, and we will help it happen,” Trump said next to Kim. Trump’s warm greeting of Kim suggested that the president was hopeful that their personal rapport could help bridge gaps in the negotiations among lowerlevel aides ahead of the summit. Trump said the biggest area of progress since Singapore was their “relationship,” and in a tweet after the dinner, he said the two had “very good dialogue.” The dinner was an attempt to continue to foster trust ahead of a series of meetings today during which the two sides will attempt to lock down the terms of an agreement. facilities, while Kim’s regime wants relief from punishing economic sanctions and a declaration to formally end the Korean War. At the dinner, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney joined Trump and Kim, along with two senior North Korean aides and two interpreters. “Disbelief and misunder-

standings were everywhere, and old hostile habits were getting in our way, but we’ve overcome it well, come face to face and walked all the way to Hanoi in 260 days,” Kim Jong Un said in the photo op with Trump. “I think it’s been a time period that took me more agony, effort and patience than ever. I am confident a great result will be produced this time to be welcomed by everyone, and I will do my best toward that goal.” White House aides have said the president is determined to sell Kim on a vision of modernization and present him with a choice between continued global isolation or burgeoning economic growth if he gives up the North’s nuclear weapons program. Trump plans to hold a news conference after the summit today. “A lot of things are going to be solved, I hope,” he said. DAVID NAK AMUR A AND SIMON DENYER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

3 TEAMS IN HUNT

Giants make a new push for Harper

Rosenthal recovering his elite heat NATIONALS Trevor Rosenthal allowed himself to look, if only quickly, because he’d earned it after spending 559 days away from a major league mound. He had thrown back-to-back balls to the Cardinals’ Evan Mendoza on Tuesday. Then Rosenthal reached back for a fastball that made him glance up at the video board beyond the right-field fence. And there were those three numbers, sneaking up on Rosenthal like a passing summer storm. 100 mph. “I was kind of surprised at how hard I was throwing. I didn’t really want that, either,” Rosenthal said, laughing, after he logged a scoreless inning in his first outing of spring. “I just wanted to ease into it. But I guess it happens.” It happens only for a select few, and that is why the Nationals bet on him with a one-year, $7 million contract — flush with

performance incentives — after he missed all of 2018 recovering from Tommy John surgery. Before the procedure, and before he was released by the Cardinals, Rosenthal was an AllStar closer who once had 40-plus saves in back-to-back seasons. After the procedure, Rosenthal slipped away from baseball, spent 14 months in full recovery mode and resurfaced at a personal showcase in Los Angeles this past October. Around 40 scouts attended. One was the Nationals’ Jay Robertson, who soon reached GM Mike Rizzo with excitement in his voice, triggering Rizzo into action. Rosenthal agreed to a deal Oct. 31, becoming the first free agent signing of the offseason. The Nationals had to wait more than three months to see him face a live hitter. The results against his teammates in the first few days of camp were worth it. The results against St. Louis were better.

JEFF ROBERSON (AP)

The former All-Star reliever hits 100 mph as he returns from Tommy John surgery

If Trevor Rosenthal keeps progressing, he could give the Nationals a hardthrowing right-hander to pair with left-handed closer Sean Doolittle.

Pitch clock stopped? MLB reportedly has told the players’ union it is willing to postpone use of a 20-second pitch clock until 2022, after the current labor agreement expires, as part of a broader proposal to speed up games. One idea would be to force pitchers to face at least three batters; another would further reduce the number of mound visits allowed. (TWP)

“There was a big number,” said Nationals manager Dave Martinez, who also peeked at the scoreboard in West Palm Beach once Rosenthal started pumping in fastballs. “What’s good

about that whole deal is that he thought he was throwing 94-95 mph. Which is kind of where we want him to be.” If Rosenthal keeps progressing, the Nationals could have a right-handed, hard-throwing, high-leverage reliever to pair with lefty closer Sean Doolittle at the end of games. If Rosenthal, 28, reaches his pre-Tommy John form, or something close to it, he could fill that set-up role and even spell Doolittle when he needs a rest. If Rosenthal doesn’t regain his old edge, the Nationals will have to keep looking for a surefire option for the eighth inning.

With Bryce Harper in no hurry to sign with the Phillies or Dodgers, the Giants have stepped up their pursuit. Their top two executives flew to Las Vegas on Tuesday to meet with Harper for a second time, the Bay Area’s Mercury News reported. Earlier, the Giants were thought to have offered only a short contract, but they reportedly have joined their competitors in talking about 10 years or more, thinking they can do so because some of their onerous contracts expire in two years. San Francisco players might be excited. The Giants’ writer for The Athletic tweeted Wednesday, “The sense in the … clubhouse today is that they have a very legitimate shot of welcoming Bryce Harper this weekend.” (EXPRESS)

NFL

If you’re the kind of fan to think back on miseries past — a task that’s easier with the Stanley Cup banner finally hanging from the rafters of Capital One Arena — now might be a good time to reflect on those soul-crushing losses to the Penguins in 2016 and ’17. Sure, the central villain will always be Sidney Crosby, and maybe your mind wanders to Evgeni Malkin or Marc-Andre Fleury or Matt Murray. But when I think about those series, why can’t I get forward Carl Hagelin out of my mind? “Hated playing against him,” Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan said. “It’s a pain in the [rear] chasing him around,” defenseman Matt Niskanen said.

“It’s one thing to play against a fast player,” forward T.J. Oshie said. “It’s another thing to play against a fast player who knows how to read the game. He’s always on you.” In trading with the Kings last week for Hagelin, long a Washington annoyance with both the Rangers and Penguins, and defenseman Nick Jensen, already signed to a four-year extension to remain part of the core here, the Capitals are making it clear: This group, with a couple of tweaks, was good enough to win it all last year. So why wouldn’t some tweaks this season — better, more significant tweaks — put it in the same position again? “You make some moves like this,” Oshie said, “and it kind of refocuses you that playoffs are coming here, and it’s time

to get going.” Hagelin is the kind of guy who could get them going. You’re not going to notice him much on the scoresheet. But watch him on the ice. He’s hard to miss. No one knows that like the Capitals. Hagelin’s rookie season was 2011-12 with the Rangers. Guess who ousted the Caps that spring? Yep, New York. That began a string of Hagelin’s personal playoff mastery of Washington. In 2012, ’13 and ’15 with the Rangers, then

again in 2016 and ’17 with the Penguins, Hagelin was in the handshake line moving on as the Caps’ season ended. That finally ended last year, when the Capitals at last vanquished the Penguins (and Hagelin). So maybe the Capitals didn’t have a second-round problem or a Pittsburgh problem, after all. Maybe it had a Carl Hagelin problem. And now he is on their side. Follow Barry Svrluga on Twitter @barrysvrluga

For 20 years, DCIFF has championed the art of indie movies FILM Picture it: The year is 1999. The Sundance Film Festival is beginning to become, well, what Sundance is now. And a group of plucky Washingtonians looked at the Sundance model and said “… nah.” And the D.C. Independent Film Festival was born. “[DCIFF] began very much as a counterbalance, because

at that time film festivals were very big, splashy things,” says Deirdre Evans-Pritchard, who’s in her eighth year as DCIFF’s executive director. “It was set in motion specifically to include the filmmaker in the presentation of the film.” DCIFF champions films that don’t have backing from large studios — or any backing at all yet — and one of its signatures has been its relationship with filmmakers, both new and established, who present their work to festival audiences in interactive

Even 20 years on, DCIFF’s overall mission hasn’t changed — and it won’t. “We want people to think of film as part of their lives in a different way, more than just going to the movies,” EvansPritchard says. “The goal is to make visual literacy in terms of digital art accessible and understandable and enjoyable.” KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

First, I’d hang around in some of my favorite coffeehouses in the neighborhood, Pear Plum Cafe and Elle, and then ending at The Potter’s House, where I’ll buy a book to take with me for the day. My kids will come along with me for that part. My

Because it’s my dream day, the new MLK library will be open. I might stop at the cafe and get more coffee and a snack and then visit the rooftop garden, which is going to have an awesome view of the Capital One Arena and the National Portrait Gallery. It’s maybe a sad statement to say that on my dream day I’d go to work, but these projects are so exciting I can’t wait to see them in real life.

To be clear, pharaohs exist in the National Geographic Museum’s new exhibit, “Queens of Egypt.” But they’re decidedly overshadowed by the women — legendary queens like Nefertari and Cleopatra VII, and the ordinary mothers, sisters and daughters who lived 2,000 to 3,500 years ago. “I enjoy that we put the pharaohs’ role second, because that usually comes first,” says exhibition content specialist Erin Branigan. “It’s really about women in Egypt and the many roles they occupied,” brought to life through more than 300 artifacts, such as jewelry, statues and sarcophagi (stone coffins). The 14,000-square-foot exhibit, which opens Friday, is one of the largest in the museum’s history. Here’s a closer look at some of the objects on display.

Nefertari’s grave goods Queen Nefertari was the first “great royal wife” of Pharaoh Ramses II. (The pharaohs typically had numerous wives — each serving a different purpose, like political advancement — but one was designated the primary, or great royal, wife.) When Nefertari died, she was buried in a spectacular tomb in the Valley of the Queens. Her grave was robbed soon after it was sealed, but a handful of objects that may have belonged to the queen were recovered when the tomb was discovered in 1904, including sandals (she wore a size 9), a pair of mummified lower limbs and a djed-pillar amulet that symbolized stability. Also recovered were 34 wooden shabtis, small figures designed to perform physical labor for the deceased in the afterlife. “They wanted the afterlife to be a life of leisure, so they came up with these little shabtis to activate,” Branigan says. When the deceased were inevitably called upon to do work by a god, the shabtis would handle the tasks instead.

1811 14TH St NW

Many Egyptian gods had animal forms and characteristics — like Bastet, the goddess of domestic joy, who appeared as a cat or a woman with a cat’s head. She was associated with the moon, birthdays and healthy pregnancies, Branigan says, and was “reputed to possess the magical power to stimulate love.” No wonder she was popular. In one myth, the lion-headed goddess of battle, Sekhmet, was sent to Egypt to fight the enemies of her father, the sun god. She “became so bloodthirsty that she tried to destroy all of mankind,” Branigan says. “To control her, the gods gave her red beer, which she mistook for blood.” She downed it all, got quite drunk and turned into Bastet, the goddess’s gentle, domesticated form.

Scarab ring This gold and steatite ring — made around 1292 B.C. — was likely worn by both men and women to confer protection and indicate prosperity and status. (Gold was worn only by the wealthy elite.) The ring invokes protection from Khepri, the scarab beetle god, whom the Egyptians considered responsible for the sun rising each day. “The scarab pushes a little ball of dung in front of itself, which it lays its eggs in,” Branigan says. “So they thought there was a great celestial scarab that pushed the ball of the sun over the horizon and across the sky. They were sun worshippers.” An engraving on the ring reads, “May you become a praised one, enduring in the temples.”

Statue of Mut Ancient Egyptians worshipped an array of gods and goddesses who each served a unique, important purpose. Mut, whose name means “mother,” was a goddess of war and considered the “mistress of all the gods,” a role model for Egyptian women. A heavy limestone statue of Mut is featured at the center of the exhibit; she is distinguished by her headwear, a double crown that represents upper and lower Egypt. “It was originally part of a couple’s statue, so it would have had two figures,” Branigan says, noting that the other half represented the god Amun-Ra, Mut’s husband. The location of the other half of the statue is unknown.

The ancient Egyptians believed the deceased couldn’t reach the afterlife unless their body was preserved — which meant that when someone died, he or she underwent a 70-day mummification process. Embalmers washed the body, waxed the skin and removed the internal organs, Branigan says, and the corpse was dehydrated for about 40 days before being wrapped in linen and resin. A layered case featured in the exhibit showcases the components of a typical Egyptian burial: The top layer contains the coffin lid, followed by a false lid for additional protection, the mummy mask and several amulets that provided protection and luck, and beneath that, the mummy itself — in this case, a man named Petament. The bottom layer is the coffin base. “We’re able to show how the mummy would have been encased,” Branigan says. “The coffins they used were sort of like Russian nesting dolls.”

Meet the new Adams family Aaron Posner

“JQA,” Aaron Posner’s play about our sixth president, depicts John Quincy Adams as a scholarly mind, a dedicated public servant and, paradoxically, a man who proved ill-fitted for the White House. For all of Adams’ ideals and intellect, the play suggests that he was hampered by hubris and a reluctance to work with others. It’s with a dash of irony, then, that collaboration is baked into the constitution of “JQA,” as Jacqueline Correa, Joshua David Robinson, Eric Hissom and Phyllis Kay share the title role in each performance of Arena Stage’s world-premiere production. In a round-table talk ahead of Friday’s debut performance, the actors discussed how they’re collectively shedding light on one of U.S. history’s lesser-known chief executives. THOMAS FLOYD (EXPRESS)

Arena Stage, 1101 Sixth St. SW; Fri. through April 14, $40-$95.

‘A conversation starter’

Written and directed by Posner, a staple of D.C. theater, “JQA” is a work of historical fiction composed of nine two-character scenes. Through those vignettes, Adams engages in conversations with myriad historical figures, including George Washington, Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln and several members of his own family — all of whom are also played by the four principal actors.

Correa: In reading the script, I was really excited because it was approaching the subject matter in a very nontraditional play structure. It felt more like the beginnings of dialogues between the characters and the audience, or the audience amongst themselves. Kay: And Aaron sees the big

picture. He knows the story that he wants to tell. Like Jacqueline said, he really wants this play to be a conversation starter for people politically. As it turns out, there are so many elements that he’s touched on in what we’ve built now — it also deals with family and relationships — and all those things are brought to bear via a political landscape.

THURSDAY | 02.28.2019 | EXPRESS | 25

weekendpass ‘Any of us … can be these great people’ Posner took a color- and gender-blind approach to casting. Correa plays Adams as a child and young man before Robinson takes over when the character is in his 20s. Hissom then steps in as Adams in middle age, after which Kay plays the oldest version of the protagonist. To give the audience a visual cue, the actor playing Adams in each scene wears a distinctive coat.

Hissom: It’s equally fascinating and also just completely matter-of-fact that women are playing him and people of different races are playing him. It seems like that barrier has really been shattered in the American theater. Robinson: People would ask me, “Who are you playing?” And I’d be like, “John Quincy Adams.” I’m an African-American man, and it was actually such a treat

to see people deal with that in real time — the initial reactions of, “Oh,” but then the secondary reaction of, “Of course you’re playing John Quincy Adams, because why wouldn’t you?” Kay: It’s about how any of us, men or women, can be these great people. That is what makes it human and hopefully identifiable. The people in the audience will be able to recognize

themselves and people that they know, and that hopefully will be a way into the story. Robinson: I also play Andrew Jackson at some point, and who knew that that was going to be a dream role of mine? But it sure is. If you have something to say — even if I violently disagree with you, as is the case with Jackson — he was a man of convictions, and worth taking a deep look at.

‘All actors steal, right?’ In dividing the titular role, the actors collaborated throughout rehearsals to give Adams a sense of continuity — focusing on his dialect and body language — while also each delivering their own take on the character. Although giving another actor feedback is a cardinal sin in the theater world, such communication is common behind the scenes of “JQA.”

Correa: We’re trusting that when the audience shows up, the storytelling is strong enough that they’re going to go on the ride with us, that we don’t have to be mimics of one another in order to tell this story. We’re just looking for a few things to pin for the audience.

of, “How can [Adams] have a unified personality?”

Hissom: We’re working with a vocal coach and with Aaron and with each other in terms

Correa: Right — the focus is on the play and the character and how to be in service of that.

Robinson: There’s a lack of preciousness about it. We’re all here to make this guy the biggest, most full, most truthful version of that he can be. It’s not like, “I got to get my moment here.”

Robinson: And all actors steal, right? Whenever you go and see something that you like, you say, “I’m going to put that in my pocket and use it later.” It’s actually kind of wonderful to have that be the actual job. “That thing that Phyllis did? Yeah, I’m going to take that. Sorry my scene comes first and [the audience] is going to think it’s my idea ….”

‘What is this American experiment?’

Kay: Our government was fairly

new at this point. Aaron has showcased the fact that there are points where the form of government maybe started to mutate into something unhelpful. Suddenly it’s these career politicians trying to get things accomplished for their own ends and not necessarily for the ends of the people that they’re representing. That’s something

that I think will provoke quite a bit of lively discussion here. Robinson: I go to the theater pretty regularly, and a lot of times I’ll leave the theater being like, “Why did they make that choice to do that play in this climate?” And I don’t think anyone is going to walk out of this play with that question.

Hissom: He’s a good figure to look at in terms of, “What is this American government? What is this American experiment?” We have a debate these days: A lot of people want smaller government, and there’s people that think government can help. That’s thoroughly discussed in this play.

Michael Lavine

Before serving in the White House from 1825 to 1829, Adams was a diplomat, a senator, a secretary of state and, of course, the son of the second president. After his presidency, Adams went on to serve as a congressman from Massachusetts for nearly 17 years. It was this life in public service — largely spent advocating for big government and opposing slavery — that the cast sees as a profound prism through which to meditate on modern politics.

Don’t expect her to pull any punches

How would you describe your approach to stand-up? Hilarious — period. But I would say it’s a little bit storytellingesque. I derive all my material from personal experiences, so there’s a lot of stuff about relationships or family or just things I am going through at the time, all from my perspective. Who were your early comic influences? I was a really big Lucille Ball fan — still am. And Carol Burnett, Fran Drescher. I like a lot of women who are silly and classy at the same time. Sometimes women aren’t really seen as both, so I love it when that combination is visible. How important is it for you to use your platform to comment on meaningful subjects, such as race and gender? I wouldn’t want to make a blanket statement saying that’s the responsibility of all comedians, or that’s the responsibility of all audiences to choose to look into

things like that. Thankfully, there’s a variety of [comedians], so you can just choose what you want. If someone is like, “I just want to zone out and laugh and not even think about what’s happening in the world,” I get it. Go for it. When people are like, “I want to hear people talk about issues that relate to me and what I’m going through,” I also get that. You were named a celebrity ambassador for the American Civil Liberties Union in 2015. What have you gained from that experience? My job is just to be a mouthpiece for whatever they need, whatever issues need to be highlighted. And I’ll ask them questions, too. The new material I’m working on has a lot to do with reproductive health and women’s rights, and sometimes I don’t know everything. I’ll ask questions and be like, “Is this right? Is this factually correct? Is this even in the direction we should be going?” It’s nice to be able to

While Sasheer Zamata’s brand of comedy does land plenty of laughs, the politically progressive comic at times finds herself building toward a sobering point. “Somebody told me that listening to me feels like you’re getting a kiss on the cheek followed by a left hook,” says Zamata, 32. “I like that.” It’s a comedic voice that was heard across the internet last month when, in a viral clip, Zamata offered searing commentary on a Louis C.K. bit about the Parkland tragedy. “It’s like if you go to your favorite restaurant, and instead of getting the chicken that you ordered, they serve you pigeon,” she said of C.K.’s new material. “It may taste the same at first, but the more you chew on it, the more you realize the quality has decreased.” The former “Saturday Night Live” cast member is currently planning the follow-up to her debut 2017 stand-up special, “Pizza Mind,” and honing her act on the road, including sets this weekend at Drafthouse Comedy. communicate with people who are on the front lines, working with communities and trying to really fight injustices. As a University of Virginia alumna, you obviously know this area well. What’s your take on D.C. audiences? The crowds are so smart and open — as far as I can tell, anyway. I feel like the times I’ve come to perform, the audiences really got a lot of what I was saying because it’s a diverse city and

a smart city, and I think the stuff that I’m writing can really touch a lot of people who live there. I do have a lot of stuff about sexual health right now, and I’m really excited to just go to D.C. and talk about my p----. I feel like a lot of people are trying to restrict some of the freedoms we have with our bodies, and it’ll be nice to talk about that and celebrate our bodies. The Pan American Symphony with Rodolfo Zanetti on bandoneon performs an evening of music by nuevo tango composer Astor Piazzolla, known for revolutionizing the tango by infusing it with classical music and jazz. A vin d'honneur with Argentine wines will follow the concert. During Bach’s lifetime, opera was flourishing in Italy. Composers including Vivaldi were exploring new musical techniques, full of energy and drama. Discover why Bach was so inspired by his Italian contemporaries in a concert featuring soprano Laura Choi Stuart and the Consort orchestra.

Self-described “space glam punk” band Mundy cites Cyndi Lauper, David Bowie and Prince as influences — artists with whom frontperson Mundy Spears shares a flair for the dramatic. Spears’ powerful voice soars above the D.C. band’s muted riffs, synthesizer squeals and straight-ahead beats on songs about deflecting shade and androgynous androids of the near future. Pie Shop,

Francophonie Festival

Fri. through March 31, go to francophonie-dc.org for details.

Cass McCombs occupies the (increasingly narrow) space between the indie rock and jam band worlds. He’s a gifted songwriter with a knack for clever, mystifying lyrics: “I walked these sidewalks/ Through so many years/ I got chunks of sidewalk/ Comin’ out of my ears,” he sings on new album “Tip of the Sphere.” And he’s not afraid to stretch songs out: Album closer “Rounder” holds a groove for a full 10 minutes. Union Stage, 740 Water St. SW; Mon., 7:30 p.m., $20-$22.

When Fleetwood Mac announced tour dates last year, the band revealed a major change: Singer Neil Finn (Crowded House) and guitarist Mike Campbell (Tom Petty) were replacing core member Lindsey Buckingham. It was the latest drama for a band that thrives on interpersonal issues. But it seems to be working, with Finn and Campbell each adding a song from their other jobs to the set. Capital One Arena, 601 F St. NW; Tue., 8 p.m., $69.50-$199.50.

This annual festival began in 2001 to celebrate the culture of French speakers across the globe. Each year, more than 40 embassies and partners collaborate on a monthlong series of events across D.C. William Tyler’s music always has a sense of time and place — even if you may lose track of both while listening to his hypnotic guitar-based instrumentals. The Nashville-bred guitarist moved to California before recording his latest album, “Goes West,” and the change of scenery is reflected in the music. Where his previous album, “Modern Country,” was full of wide-open and atmospheric sounds, “Goes West” is a tighter affair, with Tyler trading electric guitar for the bright warmth of an acoustic guitar (and his adopted new home).

Jazz guitarist John Scofield has spent a chunk of the past 20 years collaborating with the experimental trio Medeski Martin & Wood, which led him to explore New Orleans music, fusion rock and more. He’s returned a bit to his roots with last year’s “Combo 66,” which has the swing and bop of the Miles Davis collaborator’s early days. The Hamilton, 600 14th St. NW; Wed., 8 p.m., $25-$38.

STAGE

‘Confection’ Comfortable shoes and a taste for sweets are two prerequisites for “Confection” ticket holders: During this immersive 45-minute experience from lauded New York theater company Third Rail Projects, audience members will trail actors through the Folger’s ornate Paster and Sedgwick-Bond reading rooms. Commissioned by the Folger Theatre, this performance, inspired by late 17th-century aristocracy, spans theater and dance — and includes bite-size desserts for audience members as part of the show. Folger Shakespeare Theatre, 201 E. Capitol St. SE.; Mon. through March 24, $40-$60.

SUNDAY

Jacquees The Fillmore, 8656 Colesville Road, Silver Spring; Sun., 8 p.m., $29.50.

Jacquees struck a nerve with R&B fans last year after he pronounced himself to be the king of the genre. Plenty of established artists could easily challenge his proclamation, but it’s tough to argue with the budding singer-songwriter, who has energized R&B for a new generation of fans. On his latest album, “4275,” Jacquees brings new- and old-school influences to the table, crafting a sound that feels at once familiar and refreshed.

STAGE

‘Queen of Basel’ The glitzy Art Basel festival is the setting for this reimagining of August Strindberg’s 1888 play “Miss Julie.” In this version, the titular queen is hotel heiress Julie Montoya, who gets dramatically dumped by her fiance. A cocktail waitress and her Uber-driving fiance are tasked with comforting Julie, and their meeting turns into an exploration of class, power and Latino identity. Studio Theatre, 1501 14th St. NW; Wed. through April 7, $20-$111.

MARVIN JOSEPH (THE WASHINGTON POST)

entertainment

Mo’Nique won an Oscar for the 2009 film “Precious” but also developed a reputation in Hollywood for being difficult during that movie’s press tour.

Mo’Nique won’t be silenced The Oscar winner is still one to speak her mind — no matter the costs COMEDY Mo’Nique is the first black female comedian to have her own residency in Sin City. Yes, the first. Yet there’s been little fanfare for the notable moment. No hashtags or virtual high-fives from Hollywood friends — of whom she has precious few. There’s just the comedian and her tight team hitting the ground, doing local press, turning up three nights a week for her shows and promoting it all themselves. She snaps a photo in front of the billboard — “Mo’Nique Does Vegas” — and then heads left down the Strip, a wholly

unwalkable thoroughfare in this unholy city, but she won’t stop until she gets all her steps in. Another thing Mo’Nique won’t stop doing? Calling folks out. “I can’t waste my energy worrying about if you like me,” Mo’Nique says. “Respect me.” She’s been speaking her mind since her moment thanking the Academy for honoring “the performance and not the politics.” Since her claim that director Lee Daniels and producers Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey blackballed her in Hollywood for refusing “to play the game” during the promotional tour for 2009’s “Precious,” the brutal film that won her that Oscar. Since asking her “loves” to “boycott Netflix for gender bias and color bias” after the streaming giant offered her

$500,000 for a comedy special — a fraction of what Amy Schumer, Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock received for their shows. Mo’Nique has appeared in just five movies since “Precious.” If she could, would she just hop in a time machine and head back to Cannes to promote the film internationally and campaign for the Oscar, like everyone wanted her to? Would she have chosen not to be “difficult”? “I got to think about the little girl on the Greyhound bus coming to a place called Hollywood with no idea what she’s coming into,” Mo’Nique said. “For me, that little girl who’s not here yet, she means everything to me. That’s why I won’t back down or back up.” So, no, she doesn’t regret taking the big names to task and she

won’t stop doing it in interviews and onstage. She wants them to say “uncle,” even as she admits they probably never will. But she can’t not say something. Everything. Honesty is not like Spanx to Mo’Nique. It isn’t something you squeeze into to look better and then yank off at night to breathe. She needs it. She couldn’t breathe without it. Ask her what she’s afraid of, and Mo’Nique won’t hesitate to answer. “Not being truthful,” she says. “I would hate to be imprisoned with a lie. That’s the worst kind of prison to be in. I just have to be honest, even if it don’t make me look good. I do not want to be the Wizard of Oz. I know too many of them.” HELENA ANDREWS-DYER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Extended cut of “A Star Is Born” to hit theaters Friday

Johnson labored to pin funds for passion project FILM Believe it or not, Hollywood executives told Dwayne Johnson “no thanks” when he pitched his latest movie. It was an unusual rejection for the industry’s reigning box office champion, whose 2017 film “Jumanji” made nearly $1 billion worldwide. So the artist forever known as The Rock put on his independent film producer hat to make “Fighting With My Family.” “Every studio passed on this, regardless of if I was attached,” Johnson says. His Seven Bucks Productions found financing through WWE Studios and Britain’s Film4 to make the scrappy comedy inspired by WWE wrestler Paige’s life story. Johnson, who makes a cameo appearance in the film, says that while he knew Paige through WWE, he didn’t know her backstory — including a brother and parents who shared her passion for pro wrestling — until a serendipitous night flipping channels, when he came across a documentary about her. Stephen Merchant was eventually hired to write and direct the film. Florence Pugh signed on to play Paige, with Nick Frost and Lena Headey as her parents, and the underdog story opened in U.S. theaters this past weekend. “I immediately identified with this crazy wrestling family who was very loving, loved the world of pro wrestling,” Johnson says. Rowland infamously used Excel to “text” Nelly in the 2002 music video for “Dilemma.” The moment has turned into a huge meme in recent years, with fans saying that Rowland’s use of Excel explains why Nelly doesn’t text her back in the video.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) A tough situation is made even tougher by someone who has been on your side until now. There is more going on. ARIES (March 21-April 19) There’s no good reason for you to approach a certain situation from an adversarial point of view. Everyone wants things to come out right. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You may be making a claim that someone else disputes. It’s important to make as few waves as possible. 48 | 35 TODAY: Higher pressure overhead should keep us dry during the day. Skies turn mostly cloudy tonight as low pressure passes mainly to our south. We could see a light wintry mix on the outskirts of that system, as lows drop into the 30s. A light accumulation and a few slick spots are possible toward Friday morning.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You

needn’t understand everything you are told today to realize that changes must be made. There is enough of a warning to make sense. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You needn’t instruct another in an activity at which both of you excel. The only issue is that your styles are very different.
