page three D.C. pop-up bar returns with a new sugary scale for its elevated cocktails

FARRAH SKEIKY

GOING OUT The most common complaint about the Miracle on Seventh Street pop-up holiday bar in Northwest wasn’t the line or crowds: It was the cavity-inducing sweet cocktails. One might expect candy-sweet drinks from a Christmas bar serving cookie dough-infused vodka drinks garnished with cookie dough, but not everyone got the memo. “I was more disappointed in the drinks than anything. I tried several and they were all pretty gross and way too sweet,” one Yelp reviewer wrote, expressing a common sentiment. To amend that issue for the Cherry Blossom Pop-Up Bar — which opened Thursday

The Cherry Blossom Pop-Up bar features this twobee Calpico Fizz.

— beverage director Paul Taylor developed the Bee Key, a pictograph system to rate each cocktail’s sweetness from one bee (“Not Sweet”) to three bees (“Sweet”). It feels like a compromise: Taylor and the Pop-Up Bar crew are

going to keep making elevated cocktails, with unusual spirits and house-made juices. The target audience at these bars, however, cares more about the experience — photos, cool garnishes and glassware, exploring the various rooms — than

asking the bartender about the ingredients in the “Cherry Blossom G&T.” As far as the drink list, the only drink to actually receive three bees is the Beana Colada, a thick pina colada with Plantation rum, coconut and red bean paste, an ingredient frequently used in Japanese desserts. “I wouldn’t say it’s polarizing, but you definitely have to like red bean paste,” Taylor says. Of course, you can always just forgo the cocktails: There’s sparkling rosé and other wines, a menu of Japanese sake and whiskey, and craft beers, including Stillwater’s Extra Dry “sake style saison.” The best deal, though, is probably the sake bomb: a pint of draft Kirin Ichiban beer and a shot of sake for $8. You won’t even have to worry about how sweet that one’s going to be. FRITZ HAHN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Peak bloom expected March 17-20

The National Park Service said Thursday that it expects the cherry blossoms to reach peak bloom — the region’s unofficial start to spring — between March 17 and 20. The projections fall before or at the beginning of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, which runs from March 20 to April 15. The historical average peak bloom date — when 70 percent of the blossoms near the Tidal Basin are open — is April 4, a Park Service spokesman said. (TWP)

D.C. graduation rate projected to decline Only 42 percent of public school seniors on track for diplomas THE DISTRICT Fewer high school seniors in the District are expected to receive a diploma in June than the year before, a sharp reversal for a school system that had celebrated a 20-point increase in its graduation rate since 2011. Data released Thursday by D.C. Public Schools show that 42 percent of seniors attending traditional public schools are on track to graduate, while 19

percent are considered “moderately off-track,” meaning they could still earn enough credits to get a diploma. The likely drop in the graduation rate is the latest fallout from an investigation that cast doubt on the validity of diplomas awarded last year. The graduation rate in 2017 was 73 percent, but the probe revealed that one in three graduates received a diploma in violation of city policy. Those students had walked across the graduation stage despite missing too many classes or improperly taking makeup classes. Even if all of the students

regarded as “moderately offtrack” receive diplomas, the graduation rate this year would stand at about 61 percent — 12 percentage points below last year. D.C. graduation rates reflect the percentage of students who receive their diplomas in four years. Twenty-six percent of students who started freshman year with the class of 2018 have either withdrawn or transferred out of the D.C. Public Schools system. The city still needs to determine how many of these students transferred to another school and how many dropped out. PERRY STEIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

As a powerful nor’easter rapidly intensifies off the Northeast coast Friday, a fierce high-wind event will unfold over the D.C. and Baltimore regions. The combination of the intensity and duration of high winds may make this the worst windstorm in the region since Sandy in October 2012. Sustained winds Friday are likely to reach 25 to 40 mph, with frequent gusts of 50 to 60 mph. These winds will have the potential to bring down trees and cause power outages. Loose objects will become projectiles and should be secured or brought inside. In the hours before sunrise, winds may well already be gusting over 50 mph. Potentially damaging gusts in the range of 45 to 60 mph range are likely to persist throughout the day and into the evening commute. (TWP)

An anti-gun rally was held last month in D.C. Another is planned March 24.

Gun-control rally eyes new location March For Our Lives bumped from Mall by a school talent show THE DISTRICT A planned rally against mass shootings can’t be held on the Mall later this month because it conflicts with what’s described in a National Park Service permit application as a talent show. A permit application filed last week by survivors of the Parkland, Fla., school massacre indicated the “March For Our Lives” rally will be March 24, with up to 500,000 attendees expected. Mike Litterst, a spokesman for the Park Service, said organizers proposed holding the event on the Mall but were looking to move the rally after the request conflicted with a film crew’s permit. Litterst said the film permit was “from a student group at a local educational institution,” but

The film crew’s plans for the Mall were more modest, listing equipment such as two tables, two bikes and jump ropes. Litterst said Wednesday that March For Our Lives organizers were planning their rally away from federal land, on Pennsylvania Avenue between Third and 12th streets NW, which is the jurisdiction of the District. Exits, investigations rattle the West Wing POLITICS Rattled by two weeks of muddled messages, departures and spitting matches between the president and his own top officials, Donald Trump is facing a shrinking circle of trusted advisers and a staff that’s grim about any prospect of a reset. The announcement of Hope Hicks’ resignation spread new levels of anxiety across the West Wing and cracked open disputes that had been building since the White House’s botched handling of domestic violence allegations against a senior aide last month, according to White House officials, congressional aides and outside advisers interviewed by The Associated Press. One of Trump’s most loyal and longest-serving aides, Hicks often served as a buffer between the president and the business of government. One official on Thursday compared the instability caused by her exit to that of a chief of staff leaving — though that prospect, too, remained a possibility given the questions that have arisen about John Kelly. Hicks’ departure comes as special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation appears to be circling around the Oval Office, with prosecutors questioning

Is McMaster next? Some officials are bracing for more departures. On Thursday, NBC News reported that the White House was preparing to replace national security adviser H.R. McMaster as early as next month. A White House spokesman did not deny the report. (AP)

Trump associates about both his business dealings before he became president and his actions in office, according to people with knowledge of the interviews. Jared Kushner, Trump’s

son-in-law and senior adviser, has also been weakened after being stripped of his high-level security clearance amid revelations about potential conflicts of interest. The biggest unknown is how the mercurial Trump will respond to Hicks’ departure and Kushner’s more limited access, the AP’s sources said. Rarely has a modern president confronted so many crises and controversies across so many fronts at the same time. There’s little expectation among many White House aides and outside allies that Trump, after 13 months in office, can quickly find his footing or attract new, top-flight talent to the West Wing. WASHINGTONPOST.COM WORLDVIEWS

Other countries make progress on gun control As more U.S. companies were showing support for stricter gun laws this week, two foreign governments announced Wednesday that they had made significant progress on restricting access to firearms. In Australia, authorities revealed that citizens had handed over 57,000 illegal firearms between July and September last year during a gun amnesty. In total, more than 35,000 rifles and more than 12,000 shotguns were turned in, among other firearms. Meanwhile, the Norwegian government now appears to have a majority for its plan to ban semi-automatic rifles by 2021. If passed, the Norwegian law would classify previously legal rifles used by hunters as “military-style” weapons. It would be accompanied by other measures, such as upgraded background checks before handgun purchases, Peter Frolich of the Norwegian parliament’s judicial affairs committee told The Associated Press. Australia’s firearms amnesty is based on a nationwide scheme that followed a mass shooting at a tourist site in the country in 1996 that left 35 people dead. At the time, the government decided to buy back firearms and strengthen gun control laws. In Norway, the law can mainly be traced to the 2011 Utoya attacks, in which a right-wing gunman killed 77 people. RICK NOACK

POLITICS President Trump on Thursday said he has decided to impose punishing tariffs on imported steel and aluminum in a major escalation of his trade offensive, disappointing Republican leaders and inviting retaliation by U.S. trading partners. The president said he has decided on tariffs of 25 percent for foreign-made steel and 10 percent for aluminum. He acted after a Commerce Department finding that rising import volumes threatened U.S. security. “You will have protection for the first time in a long while, and you’re going to regrow your industries,” Trump told steel and aluminum executives at the White House. Investors appeared shaken by the news. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 420 points, closing down 1.68 percent. Trump initially planned a formal announcement for Thursday morning, canceled it amid pushback from opponents and then finally disclosed the tariffs in a meeting with industry executives. The decision is expected to trigger immediate legal challenges by U.S. trading partners

at the World Trade Organization, and to invite retaliation against American exports. Trump also turned back pleas from companies that are heavy users of steel and aluminum, including automakers, which warn that higher prices will hurt their sales and could cause layoffs. “Import taxes on steel and aluminum will raise the prices of those products, which in turn will raise the price of doing business for U.S. manufacturers,” said economist Christine McDaniel of George Mason University. “There are more people in U.S. manufacturing sectors that rely on steel than there are in the U.S. steel industry. In terms of the economics, the trade-off does not make sense.” DAVID J. LYNCH AND

UN official: Pauses in attacks too brief DAMASCUS, SYRIA The five-hour daily pauses in fighting in the eastern suburbs of Syria’s capital — laid out under a “unilateral” plan by Russia — are not enough to take in aid or evacuate civilians, a top United Nations official said Thursday. Jan Egeland also said the U.N. Security Council resolution last weekend calling for a 30-day cease-fire has done little to improve the situation in the rebelheld region east of Damascus. “Since it was adopted, it did not get better — it got worse,” Egeland said. Eastern Ghouta was among the first areas to rise up against President Bashar al-Assad’s rule in 2011. The area was taken over by rebels as unrest turned into an armed insurgency, then a full-blown civil war. Egeland’s comments came

after the Russian military accused Syria’s rebels of shelling a humanitarian corridor that Moscow set up with the Syrian government, offering residents of Damascus’ besieged eastern suburbs a way out of the enclave. Russian President Vladimir Putin had ordered a five-hour daily “humanitarian pause” to allow civilians to exit the region. The daily pauses began Tuesday, but so far, no humanitarian aid has gone in — and no civilians have left the area, except for an elderly Pakistani man and his wife who were evacuated from the town of Douma on Thursday. The eastern suburbs — a cluster of several towns and villages on Damascus’ eastern edge — have faced a deadly onslaught for weeks by Syrian government troops, backed by Russia. Putin warns of new arsenal Russian nuclear arms can beat U.S. defenses, he boasts in speech

Questions arise about Melania’s ‘Einstein visa’ RU-RTR RUSSIAN TELEVISION VIA AP

U.S. to arm Ukraine ALEXANDER ZEMLIANICHENKO (AP)

NATIONAL SECURITY Deploying emotional language and an animation of a cruise missile streaking toward North American, Russian President Vladimir Putin used an annual speech to his nation Thursday to claim Russia was developing new nuclear weapons that could overcome U.S. missile defenses. For the first time, Putin claimed that Russia had successfully tested nuclear-propulsion engines that would allow nuclear-tipped cruise missiles and underwater drones to travel for virtually unlimited distances. He also warned that Moscow would consider a nuclear attack, of any size, on one of its allies to be an attack on Russia itself. Putin made clear that his declaration of Russian prowess was aimed at the U.S., which he accused of fomenting a new arms race by resisting arms control negotiations, developing new missile defense systems and adopting a more aggressive posture in its nuclear strategy. In doing so, he said, the U.S. had failed to take seriously Russia’s strength. “No one listened to us,” Putin said. “Listen to us now.” Pentagon spokeswoma n Dana White said U.S. officials were “not surprised” by Putin’s comments. Putin on Thursday described Russian missile capabilities that

had been little discussed in Washington in recent years — cruise missiles equipped with nuclearpropulsion engines, giving them essentially unlimited range and the ability to follow an unpredictable path. As proof, Putin showed a video animation of a missile launched in the Russian Arctic evading missile defenses as it crossed the Atlantic and headed toward the U.S.

The Trump administration announced Thursday that it plans to sell Ukraine 210 anti-tank missiles to help it defend its territory from Russia, in a major escalation of U.S. lethal assistance to Ukraine’s military. Congress has 30 days to block the $47 million sale if it disapproves. The move came after Russia claimed to have new nuclear weapons that can’t be intercepted. (AP)

Cruise missiles hug the terrain, flying low and fast, allowing them to evade U.S. radar and missile defense systems designed to shoot down missiles that fly more slowly and at an arc. “I hope everything that has been said today will sober any potential aggressor,” Putin said. Putin’s claims jolted close observers of the Russian military. An independent Russian military

analyst, Alexander Golts, said that weapons experts he had spoken to after the speech “were all in shock, as was I.” “This is the start of a new Cold War,” Golts said. “This is an effort to scare the West.” It wasn’t immediately clear whether the weapons Putin described were operable or how close they were to being ready for deployment. But the speech, analysts said, represented a new milestone in mounting U.S.-Russian tensions, which have been rising since the Ukraine crisis erupted four years ago. The speech also came at a significant domestic moment. With the March 18 presidential election looming, the Kremlin is looking to high voter turnout to add legitimacy to what appears certain to be a fourth six-year presidential term for Putin. In a statement, Carson expressed surprise that the order, which included a mahogany table and 10 chairs, exceeded HUD’s budget. The former surgeon said his team will seek “something more reasonable.” (EXPRESS) William “Bucky” Bush, brother of President George H.W. Bush, dies at 79

IMMIGRATION In 2000, Melania Knauss, a Slovenian model dating Donald Trump, began petitioning for the right to permanently reside in the United States under a program reserved for people with “extraordinary ability.” Her credentials included runway shows in Europe, a Camel cigarette billboard ad in Times Square and — in her biggest job at the time — a spot in the swimsuit edition of Sports Illustrated. In March 2001, she was granted a green card through the elite EB-1 program, which was designed for renowned academic researchers, multinational business executives or those in other fields who demonstrated “sustained national and international acclaim.” “We called it the Einstein visa,” said Bruce Morrison, former chair of the House subcommittee that wrote the Immigration Act of 1990 defining EB-1, adding that Melania Trump’s résumé in 2001 seems “inconsistent” with the requirements of the visa. Michael Wildes, an attorney for Melania Trump, said she was “more than amply qualified and solidly eligible,” but declined to discuss the qualifications that the first lady cited in her petition. Sarah Pierce of the Migration Policy Institute said it is generally thought that only the top 2 percent of people in their field would qualify, she said, adding that the “quintessential award you want to put on the application is Nobel Prize.” MARY JORDAN (TWP)

Pro-gun lawmakers score political victory over Delta

The gunman who killed 49 people in the Pulse nightclub attack was killed hours afterward. Now, nearly two years later, his widow is being held accountable, charged with helping her husband plan the attack. The trial of Noor Salman, widow of shooter Omar Mateen, opened Thursday with jury selection. Prosecutors have said Salman accompanied her husband when he cased locations for potential terrorist attacks, knew ahead of time that he was planning the attack and misled FBI agents about what she knew about her husband’s plans. The defense plans to argue that Salman was abused by her husband and afraid to defy him. (AP)

Author Sherman Alexie apologized late Wednesday amid multiple allegations of sexual misconduct. “Over the years, I have done things that have harmed other people, including those I love most deeply,” he said in a statement to The Seattle Times. “To those whom I have hurt, I genuinely apologize.” Allegations — one author said there are at least 20 — against Alexie have been vague, referring to unwanted advances and inappropriate remarks and to threats against fellow American Indians. They first appeared in comments in a January School Library Journal post about sexual harassment in the children’s book industry. (AP)

Pro-gun Georgia lawmakers on Thursday made good on Republican threats to deny Delta Air Lines a hefty tax break after the company cut ties with the National Rifle Association in the wake of the deadly shooting at a Florida high school. The state House and Senate within hours of each other passed a sweeping tax bill that Republicans had amended to strip out a sales tax exemption on jet fuel. Atlanta-based Delta would have been the prime beneficiary of the tax break, which would have been worth an estimated $38 million. Governors from Connecticut, New York and Virginia have made pitches to the airline to relocate. (AP)

CAPITALS VS. MAPLE LEAFS | 8 P.M. SATURDAY AT NAVY-MARINE CORPS MEMORIAL STADIUM IN ANNAPOLIS, NBC

A great outdoors game Open-air setting adds to big-game feeling, brings back childhood memories for players NHL T.J. Oshie may be among the Capitals’ most experienced players, but the 31-year-old is ready for a fresh experience Saturday when the Capitals face the Maple Leafs at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis. Oshie will be skating in his 650th NHL game, but his first outdoors, and will have nine family members in town from Seattle. The game at the Naval Academy is especially meaningful for Oshie. Both of his grandfathers served on the same Navy ship — the USS Saint Paul — years before his parents met. “It means a lot to my family that we’ll be playing there. You can never show enough

appreciation for the military and for what they do for us,” Oshie said. Oshie has seen bits and pieces of the NHL’s previous 24 regular-season games outdoors, and concedes he was jealous of those participating. After spending the first seven seasons of his career in St. Louis, Oshie was already in his second year in Washington when the Blues hosted the 2017 Winter Classic. The Capitals have played two games outdoors, a 3-1 win over Pittsburgh at Heinz Field in 2011 and a 3-2 victory over Chicago at Nationals Park in 2015. Saturday’s game is a long time coming for Oshie, who spent hours skating by himself as a 9-year-old on his uncle’s

Plans for weather The NHL scrapped plans for the Capitals and Maple Leafs to practice at Navy’s stadium in Annapolis on Friday. With rain and high winds in the forecast, the Capitals will practice at their facility in Arlington. Both teams are supposed to get a morning skate in Annapolis on Saturday. Playing Sunday is a backup option if the weather isn’t clear. B.R.

backyard rink in Warroad, Minn. “It seems like any time you get on a pond or skate outside, it turns into pure joy and fun,” he said. For defenseman Matt Niskanen, the NHL’s outdoor excursions are a chance to reconnect with his childhood. His youth team in Mountain Iron, Minn., played home games at an outdoor rink, where Niskanen’s father

drove the Zamboni. “The benefit to that was that I had as much ice time as I wanted and a key to the warming shack,” Niskanen said. “I could go whenever I wanted and stay as late as I wanted. That was a nice way to grow up.” More than 35,000 fans are expected in Annapolis, where elaborate pregame ceremonies, custom uniforms and a national TV broadcast will create a bigevent feel. Saturday will be Niskanen’s third outdoor NHL game. “I think everyone enjoys the experience of being outside and longing for the past of being a kid again,” he said. “Fans love it. It’s usually an awesome atmosphere. The regular season is a marathon, so to have something different and special like this, I think the players welcome it.”

Coach Jay Gruden met with reporters at the NFL combine Thursday, taking time to address a report about the Redskins and a major change at quarterback. Here are three takeaways. (EXPRESS)

3 No trade for Cravens Reports on Wednesday said Washington was in trade talks with Denver about recently reinstated safety Su’a Cravens. “We’re not trading him,” Gruden said.

2 Embracing change QB Kirk Cousins becomes a free agent March 14, and Gruden is at peace with that: “If Washington’s not a place that he wanted to be, it’s time for us to move on.”

1 Stability feels good Because the trade for Alex Smith isn’t yet official, Gruden avoided using his name, but the coach said having a QB under contract for five years “means a lot.”

Hoyas lack stopping power MEN’S BASKETBALL Coach Patrick Ewing’s efforts to rebuild Georgetown with a defense-first approach seemed to be paying off during back-toback close wins in mid-February. But the three straight losses that followed showed just how far Georgetown still has to go ahead of next week’s Big East tournament. Inconsistency on defense has been Georgetown’s biggest downfall this season. It’s the reason the Hoyas have lost six Big East games by five points or fewer and have consistently struggled to close out opponents. This season, Georgetown has allowed opponents to shoot 34.6 percent from 3-point range, which ranks 166th out of 341 Division I schools. That weakness carried into a late collapse Monday against Marquette. The Golden Eagles trailed Georgetown by 12 with 2:08 left in the first half but canned three 3s before the break and eventually won 90-86 in overtime. Last Saturday against Providence, Georgetown followed an impressive first-half defensive

showing with another late-game collapse. In the first 20 minutes, Georgetown held the Friars to just 38.9 percent from the field and outrebounded them on the defensive glass 19 to 13. But then the Hoyas allowed the Friars to shoot 51.9 percent from the field and 71.4 percent from beyond the arc in the second half of a 74-69 loss. The Hoyas showed signs of life after Ewing launched himself at a referee over a perceived foul, but the spark didn’t last long.

Error helps Virginia finish wild, 11-inning no-hitter

Miller denies ESPN report, will keep coaching Arizona

Six Virginia pitchers combined for an 11-inning no-hitter in a 4-3 win over William & Mary on Wednesday in which they walked seven, committed four errors, threw three wild pitches and hit one batter. It was the sixth no-hitter in Virginia history. The Cavaliers trailed 3-2 with two outs and the bases loaded when a Tribe error at first led to the winning runs. According to ESPN, no MLB no-hitter has lasted more than 10 innings. (TWP)

In a Thursday news conference, Arizona coach Sean Miller denied a claim that he discussed a $100,000 payment to a top recruit and said he will coach in next week’s Pac-12 tournament. ESPN reported last Friday that the FBI had Miller on a wiretap discussing a payment to Wildcats freshman Deandre Ayton to attend the school. Miller hasn’t coached since the report. (AP)

HUGE LOSS

32

The number of points by which Georgetown lost to Villanova in its previous meeting, an 88-56 defeat in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 17. It was the biggest loss and the lowest scoring output of the season for Georgetown, which visits the No. 4 Wildcats on Saturday for a rematch in its regular-season finale. (EXPRESS)

“I don’t think it’s an effort problem,” Ewing said Saturday, when Georgetown held a five-point halftime lead on Providence. “We had opportunities to pull away from them or come up with that loose ball at the end or make a play at the end either to block a shot or not to give up a 3-point play, but just didn’t get it done.” Junior center Jesse Govan echoed his coach’s words, pointing out that the team is often a play or two away from reversing its fortunes. “We’ve had a few close games ... and just haven’t been able to close them out,” Govan said. “Defense ends with securing the rebound, and that’s been something that’s been hurting us all year.” The Hoyas have shown enough improvement for Providence coach Ed Cooley to take notice. “[It’s] unbelievable how many close games they’ve lost,” Cooley said, adding that the Hoyas will be “a tough out” in the conference tourney, which starts Wednesday. Georgetown (15-13, 5-12 Big East) has one regular-season game left to prove it can defend better. That will be Saturday at No. 4 Villanova (5 p.m., Fox), which hammered Georgetown 88-56 in January. Women’s Big Ten tourney: No. 2 seed Maryland on Friday plays winner of Indiana-Michigan St. (late Thursday)

Botched finish seals Terps’ exit from New York WISCONSIN 59, TERPS 54 The final depressing pang of the Maryland men’s basketball season came with five seconds remaining against Wisconsin in the second round of the Big Ten tournament Thursday. Terrapins coach Mark Turgeon screamed at his confused team as it tried to inbound the ball with a chance to tie. The play reflected many things that went wrong during a season in which Maryland lost eight games down the stretch by six points or less. The eighth-seeded Terrapins never got a chance to break that cycle in a 59-54 loss in New York. Down 57-54, guard Dion Wiley couldn’t find anybody open, and his pass to Anthony Cowan was intercepted by Wisconsin’s Khalil Iverson, who hit two free throws after Wiley fouled him. That ended any chance of Maryland (19-13) making a fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament. Guard Kevin Huerter finished with 20 points but missed 1 of 2 free throws with his team trailing 55-53 and less than 10 seconds left. Cowan added 16 for the Terrapins. Forward Ethan Happ led the Badgers (15-17) with 14. Ninth-seeded Wisconsin dictated the pace early, lulling Maryland to sleep with long possessions. Maryland fought back to tie the score several times late in the game but gave up its final lead after two offensive rebounds set up a Brevin Pritzl jumper with 28 seconds left. Oldman is among our greatest living actors, but his turn as Winston Churchill isn’t even close to his best performance. He’ll take the trophy this year as kind of a symbolic Lifetime Achievement Award/Sorry You Haven’t Gotten One Yet, but Chalamet’s performance as a lovesick teenager is quiet, nuanced and immensely powerful. In 10 years, Chalamet will also be one of our greatest living actors, and in looking back on this performance, we’ll see more clearly just how good he was when he was just so young.

for best actor (and then he won for “Scent of a Woman,” which, huh?). “Vertigo,” now widely considered the greatest film OF ALL TIME, wasn’t even nominated for best picture in 1959. If hindsight is 20/20, the Oscars are blind. So the question really isn’t who’s going to win Sunday night — it’s who, 10 years from now, we’re

going to realize was robbed of a trophy.

As host of Sunday’s Academy Awards (8 p.m., ABC), Jimmy Kimmel has nothing to do with the envelopes. “And I’m very glad I don’t,” says Kimmel, who also hosted last year. There are things he can control, though.

McDormand’s fierce performance as a griefstricken, rage-fueled mother bent on revenge (or justice, depending on your point of view) elevates an uneven script and is worthy of celebration, but its power isn’t enough to keep it in memory for a decade. Neither is any other lead-actress performance I could think of after going through the list of every movie I saw last year. I leaned toward Kristen Stewart (“Personal Shopper”) and Brooklynn Prince (“The Florida Project”) but couldn’t talk myself into either. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Which category is going to have the wrong envelope this year? We’re going to plant the wrong envelope in a number of categories to keep people on their toes. Then we’ll be going into the crowd and pulling Oscars from people.

Best supporting actor

2018’s predicted winner: “The Shape of Water”

2018’s predicted winner: Allison Janney, “I, Tonya”

2018’s predicted winner: Sam Rockwell, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”

2028’s hindsight winner: Michelle Pfeiffer, “mother!”

2028’s hindsight winner: Michael Stuhlbarg, “Call Me by Your Name”

It’s been a tough year for many. How will you strike the right tone as host? I want to make people laugh, and I want to appropriately honor the people who have been dreaming of this night for their whole lives, and let them enjoy it.

Darren Aronofsky’s bizarre biblical metaphor “mother!” was divisive. To say the least. Pfeiffer, though, was rightfully celebrated for her role as … actually, better not to say. She was funny and terrifying, often at the same time, and whenever she fixed her gaze on Jennifer Lawrence, you could feel the skill and power behind it. The film didn’t get any nominations, but it will be part of the cinematic dialogue for years (we just need some space from it), and Pfeiffer’s performance will be at the center of the conversation.

The always-great Rockwell deserves the win, but his flawed movie isn’t enough to ensure him a place in history. “Call Me by Your Name,” on the other hand, will still be around when we’re in flying cars. Much has been made of Stuhlbarg’s final monologue, but the reason it’s so powerful is that it emerges organically from Stuhlbarg’s complicated — and un-nominated — performance. His short time at center stage is a master class in quiet emotion and a subtle, shining moment that will stand the test of time.

You’ve gotten more political on your talk show. How much of that will you bring to the Oscars? I just try to be sincere, even when I’m joking. And I’m there to do jokes for the most part. But if there’s a moment where I … have something serious to share, then I will.

2028’s hindsight winner: “Mudbound” Netflix’s “Mudbound” was in theaters just long enough to put it in Oscar contention — and it did pick up four nominations, including Rachel Morrison’s for cinematography and Mary J. Blige’s for best supporting actress. But it didn’t get the recognition it deserved. It is a timeless story of race in America set in post-WWII Mississippi, beautifully shot by Morrison, masterfully directed by Dee Rees and full of absolutely perfect performances. Maybe in 10 years there will be a “What the hell were they thinking?” Oscar; if so, the American masterpiece that is “Mudbound” is a shoo-in.

‘Weinstein’ doc: How did this go on for so long?

A Russian spy (Jennifer Lawrence) and a CIA agent (Joel Edgerton) definitely do not collude in “Red Sparrow.”

Haythe (“A Cure for Wellness”). “Joel and I would talk about it a lot, seeing whether or not he could poke any holes in the logic of it, because I wanted it to be as

bulletproof as possible.” Edgerton says it all comes down to providing the audience just the right amount of clues. “The real trick to this kind of movie is give them all the information, so when you give them that plot twist, they don’t feel cheated, and yet they don’t get ahead of the game and guess it,” the actor says. “You give them enough information that they go, ‘Oh, I got it, I should have seen it,’ without feeling, ‘Oh, come on, the people behind the film cheated me because they changed the rules at the end.’ That’s the high-wire act that you play.” KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

AWARDS

Stapleton clears more space on his mantel

Chris Stapleton, who released two top-selling albums last year, leads the Academy of Country Music Awards with eight nominations. Reba McEntire, a nominee for female vocalist of the year, will return as host for a record 15th year. The show will air April 15 from Las Vegas on CBS. Thomas Rhett earned six nods and Keith Urban and Shane McAnally each had five. Miranda Lambert and Maren Morris had four each. (AP) Deadline: Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin in talks for “9 to 5” reboot co-written by Rashida Jones

MURRAY CLOSE PHOTOS (20TH CENTURY FOX)

FILM Your mission: Pay attention during “Red Sparrow.” “This is not a movie where you can sort of lay back,” says Francis Lawrence, who directed the espionage thriller. “You have to pay attention; you have to be thinking, ‘What are these people up to?’ If you want to lean back and let explosions and car crashes wash over you, it’s not your kind of movie.” “Red Sparrow” centers around Dominika Egorova (Jennifer Lawrence), a Russian ballerina who, after a horrifying injury, becomes a “Sparrow,” a spy highly trained in the art of seduction and manipulation. Dominika crosses paths with Nate Nash (Joel Edgerton), an American agent who isn’t sure if she’s actually into him or if she’s simply using her Sparrow training as a way to double-cross him. With all of these uncertain motives and emotions, the agents’ relationship is, to say the least, muddy. “Nate is really like the audience in many ways,” says Edgerton (“Loving,” “It Comes at Night”). “He’s going, ‘Can I trust this girl? Can I not trust this girl? Am I a puppet in her game, or does she have affection for me?’ ” Lawrence — who directed Jennifer Lawrence (no relation) in the three “Hunger Games” sequels — was very conscious about not being so ambiguous

TELEVISION In making a documentary about disgraced Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein, PBS’ “Frontline” wanted to focus less on what he did than on how the alleged sexual misconduct went on for so long. “Weinstein” airs at 9 p.m. Friday, two nights before the Academy Awards. Its richness comes in detailing the combination of fear, intimidation and self-interested passivity that papered over allegations of harassment and assault dating back nearly 40 years. Several of the more than 100 women who have come forward about the film producer’s behavior speak to “Frontline,” their stories unfolding with numbing similarity, usually starting with an unwanted request for a massage. To illustrate how long this has been going on, PBS interviews two women who worked on Weinstein’s first film in the early 1980s and kept their stories to themselves because they figured no one would care. “Frontline” also speaks with two ex-Weinstein employees, who reveal how things continued due to their own inaction. PBS did not interview Weinstein, but his camp discusses some accusations. The documentary’s final scene is of reporters recently cornering Weinstein as he gets into an SUV. “We all make mistakes. Second chance, I hope,” Weinstein says. DAVID BAUDER (AP)

SUMMARY: A married couple (Emily Blunt and John Krasinski) are living in a world with monsters that attack at the slightest sound. So all they have to do is be quiet! SUMMARY: The arcade from the first movie is nearly abandoned (so sad — don’t you miss arcades?). Enter the internet — which Ralph and Vanellope literally do. You’d think they’d have an adventure in cyberspace, but they mostly just watch cat videos and argue about politics with strangers. K.P.K.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You’re likely to win a great many supporters today merely by doing what you believe in. It’s as simple as that. Don’t waste time. ARIES (March 21-April 19) You may have one or two more things to say to someone who thought that your interaction had been concluded. This is necessary info. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Whether an event is good or bad for you will depend in large part upon your ability to remain open to what follows. Nothing is certain. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Are you willing to admit to wrongdoing in the past? Perhaps it would be best for you to acknowledge your imperfections at this time.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You’re

certain to learn more from those who do not agree with you than from those who do. You must be willing to listen attentively.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) Any obstacles that appear today can be avoided if you’re willing to change course and risk losing time. Otherwise, difficulties mount. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) The more willing you are to acknowledge another’s point of view, the more others will be willing to listen to you when it’s your turn. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Today in History

Anticipation is the key to success at this time; the more you can foresee, the more you can prevent — if, indeed, it is preventable.

1793: The first (and third) president of the Republic of Texas, Sam Houston, is born near Lexington, Va.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You’re not likely to have things entirely your way today, but that’s no matter, as you are far more able to adjust now than you were before.

1867: Howard University, a historically black school of higher learning in D.C., is founded. 1917: Puerto Ricans are granted U.S. citizenship as President Woodrow Wilson signs the Jones-Shafroth Act.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

You’ll have to deal with the influence being exerted by someone who may be considered an interloper by many. Watch and listen. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You’re eager to see things return to “normal” at this time — but what is that, exactly? Nothing will revert to the way it used to be. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) You can prove your loyalty today, but you’ll want something in return. Make your desires known ahead of time; you needn’t compromise.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
