School system tricks students into learning what a bond is

New York City’s Hunter College is trying to evict a former student who it says is illegally squatting in her dorm room. The school has sued Lisa Palmer, 32, saying she owes more than $94,000 in unpaid residence hall fees since dropping out in 2016. She was denied summer housing in 2016, but has refused to leave despite warnings that she’d be charged $150 per day. Palmer, a former geography major, says she plans to stay and fight the case. (AP)

Researchers studying invasive Burmese pythons in Florida were stunned to come across an 11-footlong python that had consumed an entire deer that weighed more than the snake itself. Biologists found the bloated snake in Collier Seminole State Park. When they moved it, it began regurgitating a white-tailed deer fawn. The snake weighed 31.5 pounds, the deer 35 — the largest predator-to-prey weight difference the biologists had ever seen. (AP)

Want to get students to vote for a school bond measure? Promise them they won’t have to take finals. That’s what an errant email sent to students at Warren Central High School in Mississippi said. The Vicksburg Post reports that a Feb. 20 email asked students to help pass a bond measure to renovate district schools, saying those who vote are exempt from finals. A district spokeswoman wouldn’t disclose the message’s origin. (AP)

Barry still ‘bigger than life’ THE DISTRICT With Washington’s landscape and mix of residents having changed so fast since “Mayor for Life” Marion Barry Jr. began his epic rise — and fall, and rise — in the 1960s, many worried the man would become lost to history. Others hoped he would be. On Saturday, Barry’s place in the city was underscored for all to see — right in front of the John A. Wilson Building on Pennsylvania Avenue where he served, in 8 feet of bronze. The sculpture of the four-term mayor, 16-year D.C. councilman, civil rights activist and symbol of the successes and struggles of the place still known to some as Chocolate City was unveiled on a windy, sunny afternoon. The two-hour ceremony on the streets and plaza in front of the Wilson Building marked the first permanent public honor the District has given Barry, a flashy, handsome city pol who is now viewed as having both blessed the city with jobs and real civic standing, and cursed

it with scandals that included his crack cocaine use — for which he served six months in prison for possession — drinking and abusive treatment of women.

For the hundreds of people who came Saturday, and millions of others over the decades, Barry was a hero, and his actions during his years in office were

heroic. The majority-black city went from a federal protectorate to independence, and the region became home to a large AfricanAmerican middle class. “Sometime after Martin Luther King had a dream, and before Barack Obama brought us hope, it was Marion Barry who brought opportunity to Washington, D.C.,” Mayor Muriel Bowser told the crowd. “Marion Barry was bigger than life. He taught us that as long as you’re waking up on this Earth, there can be a comeback.” The piece, by Washington area sculptor Steven Weitzman, will be one of three full-body statues in the city of African-Americans, according to Bowser’s office. George Derek Musgrove, a University of Maryland historian who focuses on African-Americans in politics, said in an interview that Barry is a huge symbol of the struggle to overcome barriers for African-Americans, who until recently made up the majority of city residents. “He was the most influential person in D.C.’s political history, point-blank, period,” he said. “Whether you liked him or hated him.” MICHELLE BOORSTEIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Metro kept rails open despite FTA warnings a type of track defect that has led to Metro derailments in the past. Metro said its crews followed up on the FTA inspections and found the tracks were safe to keep in operation amid “ongoing” work, including the repair and replacement of some ties and upgrades to technical components, along with a doubling of inspections along the stretch. A long-term fix for the Braddock Road interlocking — a point where trains change tracks — was scheduled for this weekend, Metro said last week. But Metro’s decision to keep tracks in service for months despite repeated warnings of

dangerous conditions highlights a disconnect between FTA inspectors’ assessments and Metro’s response to the federal oversight it has been under since 2015. “I can only hope it is not a replay of the same movie we’ve seen way too much,” said Anthony Foxx, the Obama administration’s transportation secretary, who had taken the unprecedented step of placing the rail system under federal oversight after its former oversight panel was found woefully inadequate. Foxx said he did not know why the Metro and FTA findings would differ. FAIZ SIDDIQUI

State Senate rejects bill banning assault weapons

Eight dead after storm paralyzes East Coast Power outages, floods linger in area following powerful nor’easter WEATHER For two days, a deadly nor’easter turned a thousand-mile stretch of the East Coast into a wind tunnel, leaving millions without power, paralyzing flooded cities and claiming the lives of at least eight people — some of whom had tried in vain to take shelter from hurricane-force winds. With the worst over by Saturday, people from Maine to Georgia emerged from homes to take stock of damage from the storm. Some of those first glimpses came in the dark. At the storm’s peak, winds that reached 93 mph had knocked out power to more than 2 million people, including more than 400,000 in

Massachusetts and 320,000 across the state of New York. About 500,000 households on the East Coast had their power restored by earlier Saturday, but officials said wind gusts were slowing repair efforts. More than 3,000 domestic and international flights were grounded at some of the country’s busiest airports, including complete ground stops at LaGuardia Airport in New York and Dulles Airport outside the District, causing a ripple effect of delays and cancellations around the world. On the ground, highways across the Northeast were clogged with tractor trailers and buses, which were prohibited from crossing some of the region’s massive bridges because of the treacherous winds. In smaller cities and towns, particularly those near the vulnerable coast, roads had

turned into rivers. Authorities called for people to seek shelter or evacuate from flood-prone areas. Still, at least eight had died during the storm as of Saturday night, according to The Associated Press, including two children. A 6-year-old died in his bed when a tree came crashing into his family’s home in Chester, Va., and an 11-yearold died in New York. A 77-year-old woman in Baltimore County, Md., was crushed by a tree branch while checking the mail, and a 72-year-old Newport, R.I., man was also killed by a falling tree. Four men were killed when trees fell on their cars — in James City County, Va.; Connecticut; Massachusetts; and Pennsylvania. KAREN WEINTRAUB, CLEVE R. WOOTSON JR. Scientists find new colony of 1.5M penguins Scientists have discovered a previously unknown “supercolony” of around 1.5 million Adelie penguins on Antarctica’s Danger Islands, according to a study published Friday, the BBC reports. The colony was first spotted when photos from space appeared to show large patches of penguin poop in the area. The penguins’ presence was confirmed in 2015, when researchers traveled to the remote archipelago, which is surrounded by thick ice. Using drones, they counted 751,527 pairs of Adelie penguins — estimated to be more than in the rest of the Antarctic Peninsula combined. The finding is particularly important because Adelie penguin populations elsewhere on the peninsula are declining due to climate change. (EXPRESS)

The Florida Senate on Saturday voted 20-to-17 against a bill to ban assault weapons, then pivoted to a moment of silence for victims of the Parkland, Fla., school shooting. A measure to allow parents to opt students out of classrooms with armed teachers also failed. The Florida legislature has long resisted gun restrictions, but in the wake of the shooting has signed off on bills raising the minimum age to purchase firearms to 21 and mandating a three-day waiting period for gun purchases. Merkel set for fourth term after months of negotiation

An apartment building collapsed Sunday in Poland’s western city of Poznan, killing four people and injuring 24 others, officials said, as firefighters and rescuers with dogs combed the rubble in search of more victims. The building contained 18 apartments and housed 40 residents, according to Slawomir Brandt, a spokesman for the firefighters who gave the death toll. Regional governor Zbigniew Hoffman said it was too early to determine the cause, but that a gas explosion was one possible explanation. The government has promised shelter and financial support for displaced residents. (AP)

The archdiocese of Naples says it has sent the Vatican a 1,200-page dossier identifying 40 actively gay priests and seminarians in Italy. In a statement on the diocesan website, Cardinal Cresenzio Sepe said he forwarded the file to the Vatican because of “the gravity of the cases for which those who have erred must pay the price, and be helped to repent for the harm done.” The dossier, containing WhatsApp chats and other evidence, was compiled by a self-proclaimed gay escort, Francesco Mangiacapra. He has told Italian media that he outed the priests because he couldn’t stand their hypocrisy any longer. (AP)

Germany ended months of political uncertainty Sunday when Chancellor Angela Merkel gained the support to preserve her governing coalition and secure a fourth term. The center-left Social Democrats voted to remain in a coalition with Merkel’s conservative bloc, after drawn-out negotiations triggered by September’s elections, which saw the rise of a new right-wing force in German politics and raised questions about Merkel’s future. Parliament is expected to meet March 14 to re-elect Merkel, ending the longest time Germany has been without a new government after elections in its postwar history. (AP)

Aide: No pass for allies Canada, EU are unlikely to be exempt from tariffs — unless Trump changes his mind

Authorities crack down on school threats

AP AND GETTY IMAGES

POLITICS The Trump administration sent mixed signals about its new aluminum and steel tariffs on Sunday, saying that any exceptions for allies are unlikely but also leaving room for an unpredictable president to change his mind. White House trade adviser Peter Navarro appeared to draw a firm line against case-by-case exemptions as he defended President Trump’s sudden imposition of the 25 percent tariffs on steel and 10 percent tariffs on aluminum, which are likely to hit Canada and Europe hardest. “That’s not his decision,” Navarro said when asked about the possibility of exemptions. “As soon as he starts exempting countries, he has to raise the tariff on everybody else,” the adviser said when asked about Canada and the European Union. In a separate CNN interview, Navarro suggested that Trump could indeed grant exceptions if doing so would serve U.S. interests. And Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said that although he does not expect Trump to change his mind, he does not rule it out. Republican lawmakers, including Sen. Lindsey Graham, S.C., called the tariff decision misdirected. Trump isn’t even punishing China, the country that might deserve it, Graham said on CBS. “Please reconsider,” the senator said in a direct appeal to Trump. “You’re punishing the American taxpayers and you are making a huge mistake.” British Prime Minister Theresa May was among the first to raise concerns directly with Trump, asking for a reconsideration of a policy opposed by many in Trump’s own party and the White House, and that close allies say will start a global trade war. May’s office said she spoke

President Trump said last week he plans to impose 25 percent tariffs on steel and 10 percent tariffs on aluminum.

with the president on Sunday morning and “raised our deep concern at the president’s forthcoming announcement on steel and aluminum tariffs, noting that multilateral action was the only way to resolve the problem of global overcapacity in all parties’ interests.” The White House did not immediately release its own statement on the call. The biggest burden of Trump’s new tariffs would be borne by Canada, the largest U.S. trading partner. Canada is the largest exporter of steel and aluminum to the U.S., supplying $7.2 billion worth of aluminum and $4.3 billion of steel last year. Overall, the U.S. runs a trade surplus with Canada, which buys $48 billion worth of U.S. automobiles and $40 billion of machinery, in addition to agricultural products. The steel and aluminum tariffs would also hit Britain, Germany, South Korea, Turkey and Japan, countries with which the U.S.

An unusual alliance Trade politics often cut along regional, rather than ideological, lines, as politicians reflect the interests of hometown workers. In the debate over import tariffs, some Rust Belt Democrats are in the unusual position of applauding President Trump’s approach. (AP/TWP) SEN. BOB CASEY, D-PA.: “I urge the administration to follow through and to take aggressive measures to ensure our workers can compete on a level playing field,” tweeted Casey, who has called for Trump to resign. American businesses that export while raising costs for businesses that rely on a global supply chain. In Twitter posts on Saturday, Trump vowed to strike back at European leaders who said they would retaliate. “If the E.U. wants to further increase their already massive tariffs and barriers on U.S. companies doing business there, we will simply apply a Tax on their Cars which freely pour into the U.S. They make it impossible for our cars (and more) to sell there. Big trade imbalance!” he tweeted. Trump blurted out the trade tariff decision during a White House meeting last week. A formal announcement is expected by the end of this week, administration officials said Sunday. “You just don’t do things like that off the cuff,” Ohio Gov. John Kasich, R, said on CNN. “Trade wars that divide us from our allies make no sense.” ANNE GEARAN AND KAROUN DEMIRJIAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

CRIME Fifteen students in one Florida school district are facing felony charges and prison time for making alleged threats since the Parkland massacre. An autistic Minnesota high school student whose alleged threat led to a sixhour lockdown is in juvenile court. The Feb. 14 killings have ignited a wave of copycat threats, as happens after nearly every high-profile school shooting. Most prove unfounded, but cause big disruptions to schools while tying up police for hours or even days. Experts say authorities’ swift responses are part of a climate in which even idle threats will result in serious consequences. The Volusia County Schools system in east-central Florida isn’t taking chances. Sheriff Michael Chitwood made it clear he had a zero-tolerance policy as threats began after Parkland. On Thursday, he went further, saying students or their families would have to pay the costs of the investigations — at least $1,000 and sometimes much more. The Educator’s School Safety Network, which tracks reports of school threats and violent incidents, has documented a sevenfold spike since Parkland. Don Bridges, president of the National Association of School Resource Officers, said the number of threats goes down when districts send a strong message that they won’t be tolerated. EDUCATION Unions representing West Virginia teachers and service personnel said they would stay on strike today after the state Senate voted to cut the 5 percent pay raise negotiated with Republican Gov. Jim Justice. A joint legislative committee has been formed to address differences in the pay raise bills of the state Senate and House. and the School Service Personnel Association said Senate President Mitch Carmichael and his leadership team had left them with no choice after voting to reduce the raise to 4 percent. Saturday’s statement said all

public schools in West Virginia would “remain closed until the Senate honors the agreement.” Republican Sen. Greg Boso of Nicholas introduced the amendment to lower the raise, which bucks teachers, Justice and the

Republican-controlled House, which approved the 5 percent raise on Wednesday. Democratic lawmakers said their Republican counterparts should approve the deal. A 4 percent raise, instead of 5 percent, will save the state $17 million, Boso said. Teachers are protesting pay that’s among the lowest in the nation, rising health care costs and a previously approved 2 percent raise for next year after four years with no increase. Justice said in a statement Saturday night that his sole focus is “getting our children back to school. This wrangling needs to stop right now.” MICHAEL VIRTANEN (AP)

MONDAYS! APPLE CAMPUS

Those who live in glass houses ... When Apple proposed the design of its new “spaceship” campus in Cupertino, Calif., above, officials warned the company that employees could hurt themselves by walking into the abundant glass panes, Gizmodo reports. There is now proof of at least three incidents of that, per a public records request filed by the San Francisco Chronicle. The newspaper obtained 911 calls about distracted workers who had run into the wall — some even bleeding. (EXPRESS)

TEXAS George P. Bush’s campaign flyers in Texas declare that he’s “standing beside our president” — the one who called his dad, Jeb, an embarrassment to his family and a pathetic person. At a political forum outside San Antonio, another Republican candidate brags about his “bigly” wins over Democrats. Another hopeful in Houston, just days after a mass shooting at a Florida high school killed 17 people, sent voters a photo of herself holding an assault rifle — below the words “Kathaleen Wall stands with Trump.” Texas holds the nation’s first 2018 primary elections Tuesday, and the campaign is providing a vivid exhibition of the Trump effect in GOP politics. Some races are playing out in a roadshow of one-upping emulation of the combative president, in which there’s no such thing as cozying up too close or too ardently. It’s like nothing seen before in Texas politics, even when Texan George W. Bush was in the White House. Texas candidates aren’t alone in courting Trump diehards who make up the GOP base — and who can be counted on to show up in typically low-turnout primary elections. Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette, who is running for governor, has trumpeted Trump’s endorsement. In Indiana, three Republicans running for Senate are all portraying themselves as his most steadfast ally. PAUL J. WEBER (AP)

SCOUTING COMBINE

Linebacker with 1 hand eases doubts

Closer aims to rely less on pure heat Doolittle believes more off-speed pitches will improve his efficiency NATIONALS Sean Doolittle threw two sliders and a couple of change-ups Saturday afternoon, choices that wouldn’t earn much notice with most major league pitchers, but constitute a significant development for the Nationals’ closer. Doolittle, 31, rarely throws sliders. He almost never throws his change-up. Over the past five seasons, only three relievers have thrown a greater percentage of fastballs than he has — Orioles closer Zach Britton, Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen, and Rockies lefty Jake McGee. Closers can thrive with just a fastball. But this offseason, and now this spring, Doolittle renewed a career-long effort to add legitimate off-speed pitches to his mix. “It’s definitely been a point of emphasis,” said Doolittle, a

left-hander. “The change-up has continued to progress from where it was last year; that’s a pitch I felt comfortable with over the second half of last season.” Britton built his career on a devastating sinking fastball. Jansen relies on a heavy cutter. Doolittle relies on pure heat, located with pinpoint accuracy and delivered with enough deception to add a few perceived miles per hour to every pitch he delivers. As with Britton and Jansen, Doolittle enters every game with a predictable plan: Set hitters up with fastballs they can’t square up, then put them away with fastballs up they can’t reach. But because he doesn’t have Britton’s sink or Jansen’s cutter, if he misses, movement doesn’t save him. Doolittle, who converted 21 of 22 saves last year after being acquired from Oakland, has always felt comfortable throwing his slider to left-handed hitters. It moves away from them; he can get swings and misses out

Harper back in action Bryce Harper returned to the Nationals’ lineup this weekend following surgery Wednesday to remove an ingrown toenail. He played right field in Sunday’s 6-2 victory over Detroit and went 2-for-3 with his first homer of the spring. On Saturday, he was 0-for-2 as the DH in an 8-1 win over Houston. (EXPRESS)

of the zone. But he never gained the same confidence in the pitch against right-handers. He now has a low-80s slider with significant break he feels

he can throw to righties with the same attacking intentions he would a fastball. He doesn’t necessarily hope that more sliders and change-ups will mean more K’s of right-handed hitters. Instead, he thinks it could allow him to orchestrate fewer strikeouts, thereby increasing his efficiency. “Maybe I don’t have to throw two or three fastballs to set up the high fastball for the potential strikeout,” said Doolittle, who missed time in 2017 with a shoulder injury. “Maybe I can get a grounder on a change-up in the second pitch of an at-bat.”

Central Florida linebacker Shaquem Griffin, whose left hand was amputated at age 4 because of a birth defect, keeps winning over skeptics at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. He bench-pressed 225 pounds 20 times Saturday with the use of his right hand and a prosthetic device on his left wrist. That total was eight off the high among linebackers at this combine. “My goal was six,” said Griffin, who almost doubled his previous high of 11 reps. “I felt the energy from everybody. My adrenaline was going through the roof.” He was also impressive Sunday, running the 40 in 4.38 seconds, the fastest time for a linebacker at the combine since 2006. (TWP/AP)

ANNAPOLIS T.J. Oshie found a moment to reflect as he stared through the darkness and into the crowd at fans holding up their cellphones to light the stadium during a power outage Saturday night. For Oshie and the other American-born players on the Capitals, beating Toronto 5-2 in the first NHL outdoor game at a service academy meant more than two points in the standings. “I really made a point to soak it all in tonight,” Oshie said. “It was pretty special for me, pretty special for the team here.” The game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium at the Naval Academy was halted because of a power surge that knocked out the lights with 10 minutes left. But play resumed after a 15-minute delay. Washington’s victory included Alex Ovechkin’s 40th goal of the season and 598th of his career. He became the sixth player in NHL history with nine-plus 40-goal seasons, joining Wayne Gretzky (12), Marcel Dionne (10), Mario Lemieux (10), Mike Gartner (nine) and Mike Bossy (nine). “Forty is good, but 50’s better,” Ovechkin said after the team’s 65th game of the season. “I still have time to do that.” The offensive fireworks of the

first two periods — including all seven goals and three goals in the first 6:19 — matched the pomp and circumstance of the game. Navy midshipmen and Canadian servicemen and women took part in a pregame ceremony capped by a memorable fly-over with only the planes’ afterburners visible against the night sky.

The game was played in winds of 16 to 20 mph. The weather prevented the teams from having a pre-game practice on the ice Friday, but didn’t seem to affect play Saturday night. Washington will begin a three-game California swing Tuesday night in Anaheim. STEPHEN WHYNO (AP)

Roger Bannister, the first runner to break the mythical 4-minute barrier in the mile, died Saturday in Oxford, England. He was 88 and had Parkinson’s disease. Bannister was an Oxford medical student when he made history on May 6, 1954, with a time of 3:59.4. The record, which was surpassed 46 days later, then was considered one of the landmark achievements in sports, and buoyed the spirits of Britons suffering through post-war austerity. Bannister went on to a long career as a neurologist. The current mile record is 3:43.13, by Morocco’s Hicham El Guerrouj in 1999. (AP)

ACC TOURNAMENT

Virginia’s next stop is in Brooklyn

Virginia has known for a while it had the top seed in the ACC Tournament locked up. Now that the tournament is the top-ranked Cavaliers’ next stop, senior forward Isaiah Wilkins, left, says it’s time to knuckle down even more. “I think we have to have like a full reset,” he said Saturday after a 62-57 victory against Notre Dame in Charlottesville. The tournament begins Tuesday in Brooklyn, N.Y., with Virginia (28-2, 17-1) playing its first game Thursday. (AP)

Fiorentina captain Davide Astori, 31, was found dead in his hotel room Sunday of suspected cardiac arrest before an Italian league match. The defender, who played 14 times for Italy’s national team, was discovered by team staff after he failed to arrive at breakfast at the hotel in Udine, Italy. Fiorentina’s game at Udinese was called off, as were other games in the country’s top two divisions. Club president Andrea Della Valle said Astori had been due to sign a new contract today that would have tied him to the club “for life.” (AP) D.C. UNITED

Club nears acquisition of potential new starter D.C. United is close to acquiring left back Joseph Mora, 25, from Costa Rican club Saprissa, The Washington Post reported. United will pay a transfer fee. It typically takes a few weeks for an international player to receive a work visa. Once he does, Mora will be a prime candidate to start. Taylor Kemp, United’s firstchoice left back, missed most of training camp after hernia surgery. Oniel Fisher, acquired in a trade with Seattle last month, started the season-opening 1-1 draw Saturday at Orlando City and is likely to keep the job Sunday at Atlanta. (EXPRESS) LPGA

MUST-SEE THIS WEEK

1 ‘Life Sentence’

MARC SILVER | BROADCAST MUSE

What do you prefer, real romance or unreal romance? Tonight you have a chance to see both, although it’s not quite clear what’s real and what’s not. On ABC’s “The Bachelor” (airing the first half of its two-part finale at 8 p.m.), boring former race car driver Arie Luyendyk Jr. makes his final decision. Although — SUPER-DUPER SPOILER ALERT — it has been widely reported that he proposed to one woman, then changed his mind, called it off and proposed to the runner-up. If they wrote a song about it they’d call it “I Won’t Always Love You.” I hope at least the diamond is real. Then there’s “Unreal,” Lifetime’s drama about a “Bachelor”-like TV show called “Everlasting.” Season 1 was praised for its depiction of producers shamelessly manipulating contestants for maximum drama. Season 2 was booed for

its ridiculousness, with a wild turn into a tale of murder and abuse committed by a lovesick, alcoholic cameraman. “Unreal” hopes to do better in Season 3 (10 p.m. Mondays). The hook is that “Everlasting” has for the first time cast a woman as its lead. She’s Serena (Caitlin FitzGerald), a tall entrepreneur described as a “female Elon Musk.” Alas, her self-esteem is low. “Everlasting” showrunner Quinn (Constance Zimmer) is nasty and conniving as ever. Eyeing a half-naked dancer bachelor in the cast, she coos, “He had a huge coke problem. So glad we got him!” Her righthand woman Rachel (Shiri Appleby), after suffering a breakdown last season, is living on a cult-like farm, herding goats and practicing “essential honesty.” Before you know it, Quinn convinces her to return to herding singletons. It’s great fun when Rachel really is honest: She tells the show’s top exec he’s “an overpaid, incompetent man-baby riding on the backs of women who do all

Lucy Hale (“Pretty Little Liars”) stars in this new series as a woman who has been facing a terminal cancer diagnosis — until she finds out that she isn’t actually dying and must now deal with the repercussions of the choices she’s made.

2 ‘Champions’ 9:30 p.m. Thursday on NBC

Mindy Kaling co-created and appears in this new comedy about Vince (Anders Holm, “Workaholics”), a washed-up former high school baseball star and gym owner who suddenly has to raise his 15-year-old son (J.J. Totah).

the work for you.” But how long will her truthiness last? The premiere was a lot of guilty-pleasure fun, with sharp dialogue (Serena says a sparkling gown makes her look like a “stripper mermaid”), juicy trysts and a mysterious psychiatrist keeping an eye on the show. Unfortunately, murderous cameraman Jeremy returns, reminding us what a train wreck last season was.

But there’s a new timeliness to “Unreal.” Even though this season was filmed before #MeToo broke, a big motif is how tough it is for women to succeed in a male-dominated workplace. Compared to the topsy-turvy love derby of this season’s “Bachelor,” “Unreal” seems all too real.

After ending its 15-season Fox run in 2016, the Ryan Seacrest-hosted singing competition moves to a new home, ABC, with new judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan. (EXPRESS)

BOX OFFICE HAUL

“Black Panther’s” estimated earnings this weekend, enough to top the box office for a third straight week. The Marvel film has now grossed $500 million domestically after three weeks, making it the third-fastest film to reach that mark, while also placing it in the top 10 of all time at the U.S. box office. Jennifer Lawrence’s spy thriller “Red Sparrow” came in second, earning $17 million in its first weekend. “Death Wish,” an action franchise reboot starring Bruce Willis, was third, debuting with $13 Jordan Peele’s “Get Out” won best film and best director at Saturday’s Independent Film Spirit Awards

Explore ‘Atlanta’ through his eyes TELEVISION REVIEW “Atlanta,” Donald Glover’s richly imagined and deservedly praised dramedy (10 p.m. Thursdays on FX), functions and succeeds on its own terms, even though in structure it isn’t all that different from Pamela Adlon’s “Better Things” or Aziz Ansari’s “Master

of None” — both of which rely on a disjointed, slice-of-life narrative style and their creators’ particular ways of seeing the world. Last year, “Atlanta” toyed surprisingly with talk show formats, commercials and even cartoons. Returning last week after an extended hiatus, “Atlanta” — a hazy and half-stoned collage of a young African-American man’s unhurried life in the inner suburbs of the Southern megalopolis — appears to be buckling down

for a more serious moment with a more linear storyline. Glover’s Earn is living a life that’s noticeably more marginal and depressing — the storage unit he used to sleep in with his

belongings has fallen out of his possession. His cousin, Alfred (Brian Tyree Henry), better known around town as the rapper Paper Boi, is perpetually unhappy with the state of his career.

DJ Khaled releases “Top Off,” featuring JAY-Z, Beyonce, Future

Earn’s attempt to boost his cousin’s profile leads them to a branding agency — a modern, open-floor-plan warehouse teeming with mostly white millennials who, hoping to appear doper than they’ll ever be, nervously patronize Al and Earn while spitballing ways to market Paper Boi. When Earn pulls out a CD of some of Paper Boi’s recordings, he’s told that there aren’t any disc players in this ultra-hip office; emailing a file doesn’t work either. It’s two cultures failing in every way to connect — and, in some ways, that’s what “Atlanta” is about, at heart. It’s also an excellent and deceptively precise show about the human condition. A little over a week after Kylie Jenner seemed to send Snapchat’s stock tumbling by tweeting, “Sooo does anyone else not open Snapchat anymore?
