Fir is out of style in Manhattan. The hip trees now wear sweaters.

Something stinks in one southeastern New Mexico town, and residents want police on the case. KRQE-TV in Albuquerque reports that a skunk smell is plaguing Hagerman, thanks to a mild winter that is bringing the animals out of hibernation early. Police Patrolman Adam Chavez says that officers are setting up traps around town and that healthy skunks caught in the traps will be relocated to the east side of town near a river. (AP)

A teen in Anthem, Ariz., says she was denied service at a local Starbucks drive-thru after she tried to order a Frappuccino while on a horse. Without explanation, a barista told Aspen Cline the store wouldn’t serve her when she and her horse, Scout, galloped up. There are a number of videos online of horse riders ordering lattes at Starbucks drive-thru windows. Cline said she wanted the horse drive-thru experience for her birthday. (AP)

The city’s Parks Department says it has reversed a prior decision to remove the trees’ sweaters after residents of the neighborhood told the New York Post that the colorful threads on the trees boosted business and foot traffic. Local business owner Holly Boardman installed the sweaters last Thanksgiving to beautify the neighborhood street. (AP)

‘Moment of awe’ goes viral INSPIRING Parker Curry, age 2, was not being cooperative. Standing in front of the new painting of former first lady Michelle Obama at the National Portrait Gallery, Parker ignored her mother’s pleas to turn around for a photo. “All I wanted was just one pic,” Parker’s mother, Jessica Curry, said Sunday. “She was just so fixated on the portrait and wouldn’t turn away from it.” Curry, a lifelong District resident, was so fixated on her daughter being fixated on the portrait that she didn’t see a man to the side taking a cellphone photo of the moment — Parker in utter awe, her mouth agape. The next morning, Curry said, her phone “blew up.” T he m a n to t he side — 37-year-old Ben Hines, who was in town from North Carolina visiting his parents in Alexandria — posted the photo on Facebook. It went really, really viral. And suddenly, little Parker became more than a little famous.

Parker Curry, 2, stands in awe of the new painting of Michelle Obama at the National Portrait Gallery. A fellow museum visitor took this photo.

The photo, taken Thursday, has been shared, liked, tweeted, retweeted and Instagrammed thousands of times around the world. Michelle Obama herself reacted with not one but three

heart-eye emojis. At the unveiling of the portrait, painted by Baltimore artist Amy Sherald, Obama said she was thinking of little girls — and girls of color — “who in years ahead

will come to this place and ... see an image of someone who looks like them hanging on the wall of this great American institution. . . . And I know the kind of impact that will have on their lives, because I was one of those girls.” Many of those who responded to the photo said they were inspired by Parker’s reaction. “This is what America is all about,” tweeted an Atlanta man. “This young girl can now dream about being someone like Michelle Obama.” Parker’s mother said she was amazed at the attention the photo has received. “It’s been unbelievable,” she said Sunday. Parker, in her less than 36 months alive, has become a big admirer of the former first lady. She especially enjoyed seeing Obama dance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” After seeing the portrait, Parker thinks Obama is a “queen.” That a little girl could be in such awe of the former first lady was precisely what Hines wanted to capture in taking the photo. “It was a moment of awe and inspiration,” Hines said. “I was just lucky to be there for it .” M I C H A E L S . AFTER THE STORM

Underwater treasures unearthed Last week’s windstorm didn’t just topple trees and knock out power, it also pulled the waters of the Potomac River into the Atlantic Ocean, revealing artifacts from perhaps long ago on the newly dry floor. A survey of the area unearthed an antique milk bottle embossed with “Chestnut Farms Dairy Washington, D.C.” that was likely discarded in the 1920s or 30s. Other finds included a beautiful piece of rose quartz that could be a Native American artifact; part of an old steamroller; and many, many tires. (TWP)

Less than three weeks before the deadline to enter the Democratic primary, Bowser faces no formidable opposition and will probably become the District’s first mayor to win a second term since Anthony Williams in 2002. Yet the absence of opposition should not be interpreted as a universal embrace of the mayor’s leadership or her administration’s performance, Democratic leaders and operatives say. “A smart politician would not

School scandal fallout

Mayor Muriel Bowser looks poised for re-election, even amid school and hospital scandals.

Former D.C. There are at least nine sites in the D.C. area proposed for the tech

The governor left the tours to economic development staff, who are pitching sites in Alexandria and Arlington plus the Center for Innovative Technology campus on the border of Fairfax and Loudoun counties. U.K. stores ban sale of energy drinks to kids

President Trump warmly welcomed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House on Monday.

Trump and Netanyahu vow to strengthen ties Investigation-plagued leaders exchange praise at White House POLITICS Under twin clouds of legal investigations, the leaders of the United States and Israel pledged Monday to further strengthen ties, as President Trump said he might travel to Jerusalem to preside over the opening of a new U.S. Embassy in May. Prospects for using such a trip to unveil his much-vaunted but still mysterious Mideast peace plan were uncertain. Hosting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, Trump said his controversial decision to

recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and move the embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city had improved chances for ending the conflict, despite Palestinians’ insistence otherwise. The two steps enraged the Palestinians, who claim part of Jerusalem for the capital of an eventual state and accuse Trump of abandoning the U.S. role of honest broker. Monday’s meeting came as Trump and Netanyahu cement an increasingly close relationship amid profound turmoil in the Middle East that threatens hopes of a resumption in IsraeliPalestinian negotiations and attempts to restore stability in the volatile region. Iran and its activities in Syria and Lebanon are a profound concern to Israel,

and Netanyahu made clear that Iran is his highest priority. Still, Netanyahu lavished praise on Trump for the Jerusalem recognition and the embassy move. “Mr. President, this will be remembered by our people throughout the ages,” Netanyahu said. He added that the U.S.-Israel relationship had never been closer than since Trump took office. Netanyahu arrived in the U.S. as Washington was gearing up for the annual conference of AIPAC, the powerful pro-Israel lobby, which will give him a respite from swirling legal troubles at home. He and his wife were questioned by police for hours on Friday in a pending corruption case before his departure for Washington. MATTHEW LEE (AP)

The sale of energy drinks to children under 16 years old has recently been banned by most U.K. supermarkets, the BBC reports. Customers who buy drinks containing more than 150 mg of caffeine per liter must show proof of age at eight major supermarkets and a pharmacy chain. The ban — supported by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, among others — comes amid concerns about excessive levels of sugar and caffeine in the drinks and high consumption among children. Energy drinks can contain three times as much caffeine as in a can of soda, according to The Guardian. Some lawmakers had even called for a U.K.wide ban. (EXPRESS)

According to research published Monday in Nature Communications, the baby bird lived 127 million years ago, was shorter than a pinkie finger and belonged to the enantiornithine family, which usually had teeth and clawed fingers on its wings. Finding a baby fossil that old is seen as the “rarest of the rare,” the BBC reported. (EXPRESS)

Ex-Trump aide says he’ll snub Mueller probe POLITICS Sam Nunberg, a former aide to President Trump, said Monday he has been subpoenaed to appear in front of a federal grand jury investigating Russia’s interference in the 2016 election but that he will refuse to go. In an interview with The Washington Post, Nunberg said the office of special counsel Robert Mueller, above, asked him to come to Washington this Friday. The subpoena also requests documents related to President Trump and nine others, including departing White House communications director Hope Hicks, former White House strategist Stephen Bannon, Trump lawyer Michael Cohen and adviser Roger Stone. “Let [Mueller] arrest me,” Nunberg said. Nunberg, an early campaign aide, was dismissed by Trump and is no longer in his favor. “I’m not spending 80 hours going over my emails with Roger Stone and Steve Bannon and producing them,” Nunberg said. “Donald Trump won his election on his own. He campaigned his ass off. And there is nobody who hates him more than me.” Nunberg repeated his vow in a Monday afternoon MSNBC interview, in which he suggested Mueller may have evidence against Trump. “I think they may,” Nunberg said. “I think that he may have done something during the election.” JOSH DAWSEY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

GOP moves to block tariffs POLITICS Congressional Republicans are maneuvering to stop President Trump from levying harsh tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, arguing that the move runs counter to the core of their economic agenda and could even cause political problems heading into the 2018 midterms. “We are extremely worried about the consequences of a trade war and are urging the White House to not advance with this plan,” AshLee Strong, a spokeswoman for House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said in a statement Monday. “The new tax reform law has boosted the economy and we certainly don’t want to jeopardize those gains.” Members of the House Ways and Means Committee were also circulating a letter arguing against the tariffs, and highranking Senate Republicans have voiced their opposition. It’s unclear whether the GOP pushback will have any effect on Trump, who surprised fellow Republicans on Thursday when he announced tariffs of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum. He has repeatedly defended the plans, and after the statement from Ryan’s office Monday, the president said in Oval Office remarks that he was “not backing down.” For all of the controversies Trump has faced, the tariffs

President Trump on Monday dismissed concerns from GOP congressional leaders that new tariffs on steel and aluminum could hurt the economy.

Trump’s NAFTA ploy President Trump said Monday that Canada and Mexico would not be spared from his plans for special import taxes on steel and aluminum, but he held out the possibility of later exempting the longtime allies if they agree to better terms for the U.S. in talks aimed at revising the North American Free Trade Agreement. “We’ve had a very bad deal with Mexico; we’ve had a very bad deal with Canada. It’s called NAFTA,” he declared. (AP)

decision marks one of the few times he has taken a step that runs directly counter to Republicans’ legislative and economic goals. Many Republicans have voiced concerns that the move will undermine the $1.5 trillion tax cut bill they passed in December. They also said it could cause political problems ahead of this year’s midterm elections. Democrats hope to take back control of the House and Senate in November, while Republicans planned

to run on an economic argument to defend their majorities. But it is difficult to predict how far Republicans would go to stand up to Trump, who remains popular with core GOP voters. The tariff decision has not been finalized, but that is expected to happen in the next week or two. The goal of congressional Republicans is to keep that from happening — but if that fails, other options remain on the table, according to a congressional aide who spoke anonymously to discuss the private deliberations. The Constitution gives Congress authority over taxation and tariffs, but Congress has delegated trade negotiations and tariff authority to the president over recent decades. Congressional leaders say that approach has worked well — until now. On Monday, Trump dismissed fears that the trade moves could damage the economy. “Our country on trade has been ripped off by virtually every country in the world, whether it’s friend or anybody — China, Russia, people we think are wonderful, the European Union,” he said in the Oval Office. “We lost $800 billion a year on trade. Not going to happen.” Republicans and others have warned that major U.S. trading partners could retaliate by imposing tariffs on U.S. products, but Trump — who tweeted Friday that a trade war would be “easy to win” — dismissed those concerns as well. Populist parties up but no clear majority in Italy ITALY Two populist and stridently antiEuropean Union parties surged in Italy’s parliamentary election at the expense of the country’s traditional powers, but neither attracted enough support to govern alone, near-final results showed Monday. With no faction winning a clear majority in Sunday’s vote and the leaders of the rival populist parties both claiming victory, the election was expected to produce a hung Parliament and long, fraught negotiations to form a new government. “Ungovernable Italy,” read the headline in La Stampa daily. The Milan stock exchange closed down 0.4 percent, with the Mediaset media company of one of the election’s biggest losers, three-time Premier Silvio Berlusconi, down 5.5 percent. According to the results released by Italy’s interior ministry, a center-right coalition that included Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party and the antiimmigrant League won about 37 percent of the vote. The antiestablishment 5-Star Movement came in second with 32 percent. The center-left coalition that has governed Italy since 2013 trailed badly at 23 percent. In an upset, the populist and right-wing League party surpassed the longtime anchor of the center-right, Forza Italia. The League captured some 18 percent of the vote; Forza Italia had under 14 percent. COLLEEN BARRY AND NICOLE WINFIELD (AP)

nation+world Assistance comes as White House weighs military action in Syria SYRIA A United Nations convoy carrying lifesaving assistance entered the besieged Syrian enclave of eastern Ghouta on Monday, reaching civilians for the first time in weeks amid a punishing government assault that has created one of the worst humanitarian crises of the war. Food parcels, nutritional supplements and some medical supplies were aboard the 46-truck convoy, which was organized by U.N. agencies, the International Committee for the Red Cross and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent.

The Syrian government, however, stripped the convoy of many its medical supplies, including surgical kits, insulin and dialysis equipment, U.N. officials said. The White House also “condemned sharply the bombing in East Ghouta” on Monday. Duke discovers defense Balanced Blue Devils enter ACC tournament with opportunity to secure No. 1 seed MEN’S BASKETBALL When Duke began ACC play losing two of its first three games while surrendering an average of nearly 93 points, coach Mike Krzyzewski and his players faced questions about whether they were stout enough defensively to be a championship contender. Heading into this week’s ACC tournament at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, the No. 2 seeded Blue Devils have put those doubts to rest. Before suffering a 64-63 upset loss to Virginia Tech, Duke held four straight ACC opponents to fewer than 60 points for the first time in program history. The Blue Devils rebounded from that loss with a 74-64 win over archrival North Carolina on Saturday.

Duke’s defensive uprising combined with the scoring punch of Marvin Bagley III — who on Sunday was named ACC Player of the Year as a freshman — Grayson Allen and Wendell Carter Jr., has the team in the mix for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament while it seeks a second straight ACC tournament championship. No. 5 Duke (25-6) opens the ACC tournament on Thursday, along with the other top four seeds receiving double byes, including No. 1 Virginia (28-2), the league’s regular-season champ. “If you take out the first three conference games, we’ve played as well as anybody on the defensive end in the conference,” Krzyzewski said. “… Virginia would always be one, but we’re

two or three in everything.” According to analytics from kenpom.com, Duke ranks 10th out of 351 Division I teams in defensive efficiency, and second in offensive efficiency. Duke is the only school in the top 10 in both.

The Cavaliers are first and 39th, respectively, in those metrics, in a season that’s included a 65-63 signature win at Duke. The only conference loss this season for Virginia came to Virginia Tech, 61-60, in Charlottesville, but the Cavaliers still became the first school to win 17 ACC games and the first to go 9-0 on the road in conference. With wins over Duke, Virginia, Clemson and UNC, the Hokies are all but assured a spot in the NCAA field but could use another quality win to shore up a bid. Virginia Tech reached the quarterfinals in last season’s ACC tournament, losing to Florida State before securing its first NCAA Tournament berth in 10 years.

Big Ten outlook Michigan defended its Big Ten tournament title Sunday with a 75-66 win over Purdue. Here’s how the conference tourney affected the league’s prospects for the NCAA Tournament. (TWP)

3 No. 1 seed out of reach A semifinal loss to Michigan will likely keep No. 4 Michigan State (29-4) from landing a top seed. No. 10 Purdue (28-6) had to beat Michigan to have a shot at a No. 1 seed.

2 Four-bid territory No. 17 Ohio State (24-8) will join the three other schools mentioned at the big dance. Nebraska (22-10) and Penn State (21-13) didn’t do enough to secure berths.

Verne Lundquist, a constant presence on NCAA Tournament T broadcasts for the past 20 years, will not call games during March Madness this year. Lundquist, L 77, had back surgery last fall and decided to step away from a grueling role that requires calling c up to four games per day in the early rounds. He stopped calling SEC football for CBS after the 2016 2 season but continued to work the NCAA Tournament and the Masters last year. Harper comes back swinging strong Star outfielder takes aggressive approach after minor procedure NATIONALS Bryce Harper is no longer hampered by an ingrown toenail and seems to be enjoying the freedom that has come with that healing. In his first two games back since the procedure he underwent to alleviate the problem, Harper seemed determined to seize his second chance at spring training. He is swinging, and swinging hard, at every opportunity. Sunday, one of those vigorous swings yielded a no-doubt,

Disney exec will lead ESPN The Walt Disney Co. stayed inside the family in its search for a new ESPN president, hiring James Pitaro, who has been chairman of consumer products and interactive media since 2016. He replaces John Skipper, who resigned in December, citing a substance abuse problem. Before joining Disney, Pitaro helped build Yahoo Sports into a widely used service. line-drive homer over the Nationals’ bullpen in West Palm Beach, Fla. “Through the wind!” manager Dave Martinez said afterward, referencing the 14 mph gusts that blew in during a 6-2 win over the Tigers. One of Harper’s more controlled swings yielded an opposite-field single in his next at-bat, one that scored another run. Those swings came against roster hopefuls, not established pitchers. And the big swings he took in between making contact revealed still-shaky timing and disregard for the patience he demonstrates when all is well.

Bryce Harper showed little rust after missing time to get an ingrown toenail removed.

No one could expect him to have everything together this early. But for a guy who didn’t play much last week, he looked like a former MVP should.

Despite the aggressive swings Harper has taken since his return, a more memorable demonstration came after he didn’t swing at a pitch in the first inning

of Sunday’s game — and that pitch was called strike two. Harper did not like the call, and voiced that opinion to home plate umpire Tom Woodring, going as far as to point to the spot while shaking his head. Visibly frustrated after that call, Harper then swung through a pitch out of the zone for strike three, and continued to chirp at Woodring. Martinez downplayed the incident, saying, “umpires are working on their strike zone down here, too.” Harper rested Monday against St. Louis. Tanner Roark pitched four scoreless innings in a 2-1 loss. Cowboys use franchise tag on DeMarcus Lawrence A person with knowledge of the decision said Monday that Dallas has placed the franchise tag on DeMarcus Lawrence, guaranteeing the Pro Bowl defensive end $17.5 million in 2018. The Cowboys had until today to use the tag. Lawrence, 25, tied Jacksonville’s Calais Campbell with the sceond-most sacks in the NFL last year (14½). Lawrence can still sign a long-term deal with the club that traded up to draft him early in the second round in 2014. (AP)

Raiders cut Aldon Smith after domestic complaint Oakland released pass rusher Aldon Smith after his latest run-in with the law. The Raiders cut ties with him Monday, a day after San Francisco police were searching for Smith, 28, in connection with a domestic violence complaint. The Raiders had retained the rights to Smith, a first round pick of the 49ers in 2011 and an All-Pro in 2012, while he was suspended the past two seasons for substance abuse violations. (AP)

KITCHEN HACKS

Every meal counts

Power of poaching

That single fast-food meal can narrow your arteries, leading to an increase in blood pressure. And the quick spike in your blood sugar from eating junk foods high in refined carbohydrates and added sugars can cause a surge in insulin, leading to a quick drop in blood sugar. That leaves you feeling tired, cranky and hungry for more. Just one serving of junk food can also increase inflammation throughout your body. And an Australian study suggested that in people with asthma, a fast-food meal high in saturated fat can increase inflammation in the airway, potentially making an asthma attack more likely. So the quick hit of junk food, while fleetingly rewarding, does carry short-term risks. CHRISTY BRISSETTE

Looking for a new cooking technique that could reinvigorate your weeknight meals? Poaching is one that requires few dishes, no equipment other than a stove, and is as healthy as can be. To poach is to slowly simmer food in liquid until it is cooked. It is a very gentle and gradual way to cook, fitting for delicate foods such as eggs, fish and fruit. Poaching allows the protein in the food to cook without losing moisture. Poached eggs are a great way to add protein to any dish. The fresher the egg, the better it will poach. To poach an egg, combine 3 inches of water and a splash of distilled white vinegar in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Crack an egg into a metal or heatproof measuring cup. Lower the cup into the water in the center of the pan. Tip the cup so the egg gently slides into the water. Cook for four to five minutes, until the egg white is fairly firm but the yolk is still movable. CASEY

SEIDENBERG (TWP)

Is it unhealthy to eat junk food occasionally? Here’s what to know. NUTRITION How often can you get away with eating junk food? Some recommend the “80:20 rule”: Eat healthy foods as often as possible (at least 80 percent of the time), but also enjoy the occasional less healthy food (less than 20 percent of the time), if that’s what you really want. There is some evidence that “cheat meals” can help boost fat loss and mental health among dieters. But could a few days of junk food or even a single fastfood meal make a difference in your overall health?

Junk and fast food defined What is “junk food”? Essentially, any food that is highly processed, high in calories and low in nutrients. Junk food tends to be high in added sugars, salt and saturated or trans fats. Some evidence suggests it can be as addictive as alcohol and drugs. “Fast food” is food that is prepared quickly and is eaten quickly

or taken out. While there are a growing number of healthier fast-food options, most fast food can still be classified as junk food.

Long-term effects Eating a poor-quality diet high in junk food is linked to a higher risk of obesity, depression, digestive issues, heart disease and stroke, type 2 diabetes, cancer and early death. And as you might expect, frequency matters when it comes to the impact of junk food on your health. A review of studies on fast food and heart health found eating fast food more than once a week was linked to a higher risk of obesity; eating fast food more than twice a week was associated with a higher risk of metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and death from coronary heart disease.

A few days of junk food Just a few days of junk food could change your metabolism. A small study of 12 healthy

Look at the big picture If you want to enjoy junk food once in a while but are concerned about the impact on your health, take a look at your overall health habits. Do you smoke or overdo it on alcohol? Are you exercising regularly and eating plenty of nutritious foods? Think about your ratio of healthy to less healthy foods and consider that just one healthy meal a day could reduce overall stress and inflammation in your body. Every meal is an opportunity to positively impact your health. C.B.

young men found that eating junk food for just five days led to a reduced ability of their muscles to turn glucose into energy, even though they didn’t eat more calories as part of the study. Over the long term, this change could lead to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Another effect of just a couple of days of junk food is poor

BEN CLAASSEN III (FOR EXPRESS)

is controlling. I am 55 and don’t need “Mommy” micromanaging my decisions. I’m looking for tools to use that don’t escalate the issue into an argument. This type of behavior is pushing my buttons, but if I lose my temper, then I am the bad guy, giving her something to use against me. MICROMANAGED

DR. ANDREA BONIOR | BAGGAGE CHECK

Boundaries vs. the steamrollers Q. How do I set realistic expectations for my parents about boundaries for my first child? My brother has two kids and they steamroll him — they tell him and his wife how to parent all the time, they purposely buy gifts my brother is against, they ask intrusive questions. Though he won’t stand up to them, I am determined that they are not going to do this with us. FRUSTRATED The main components of boundary-setting are establishment and reinforcement. When establishing, be matter-of-fact, specific and kind but firm (magical alchemy for even the most difficult of interpersonal situations). Make your “rules” feel in step with your parenting philosophy rather than a knee-jerk reaction to their prior offenses. Effective: “We have a no-X rule for the baby, as I’ve

mentioned. Thank you so much for buying this but we can’t have it in the house. Would you like to return it, or should we?” Not so effective: “Why can’t you listen? I told you so many times we don’t let Baby play with X. This is just like what you do to Joe.” The sooner you start, the better — and prepping for the child/grandchild provides plenty of practice in both establishment and reinforcement.

You’re absolutely right: Losing your temper will make things worse. If she has a tendency to control, and presumably has for decades, this will take some professional work and follow-up. Main areas to focus on would be for her to see how her behavior undermines your marriage, for you to express your feelings without escalation, and for you both to establish reasonable versus unreasonable decisions for her to be involved with, as well as how to communicate with each other more empathetically. But I worry that if her behavior is escalating, this is less about couples counseling and more about whether she is even capable of doing the work to look at herself and make changes. People who cling to power aren’t usually the best at seeing other people’s perspectives, but your marriage depends on it. Send questions to Dr. Andrea Bonior at baggage@wpost .com. At the Oscars, no confusion For the second year in a row, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway presented the best picture at the Oscars. This time, the results ts were less exciting. “Well, that’s how it’s supposed to go, I guess,” host Jimmy Kimmel deadpanned after the duo announced “The Shape of Water” had won. The show didn’t end with a mix-up, but plenty happened during Sunday’s telecast. EMILY YAHR (THE WASHINGTONN POST) The #MeToo moments Ashley Judd, Salma Hayek and Annabella Sciorra — three actresses who have alleged abuse by Harvey Weinstein — stood together as they introduced a video of trailblazers speaking out about inclusion and equality. Sciorra, who spent years out of the spotlight, got emotional: “This year, many spoke their truth, and the journey ahead is long, but slowly, a new path has emerged.”

Frances McDormand’s call for inclusion “I’ve got some things to say,” Frances McDormand declared as she picked up best actress for “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” The crowd roared as she urged every female nominee to stand up: “Look around … because we all have stories to tell and projects we need financed.” She ended her speech with two words: “inclusion rider.”

Oscar ratings hit all-time low with 26.5 million U.S. viewers

There were no surprises

Jordan Peele made history story

No, really — there were none. This may have been the most predictable Oscars of all time. The major acting prizes stayed the same throughout the entire award season: Gary Oldman (actor), McDormand (actress), Sam Rockwell (supporting actor) and Allison Janney (supporting actress). Best picture was up in the air, but “The Shape of Water” had 13 nods, so its win seemed inevitable.

Jordan Peele, nominated for best original screenplay, director and picture for his satirical horror film “Get Out,” became the firstt African-American to win the original ginal screenplay trophy. “I stopped writing iting this movie about 20 times becausee I thought it was impossible,” Peele said. “But … I knew if someone let me make this movie, that people would hear it and people would see it.”

Couples will receive $160 in gift cards for completing surveys

TOGETHER is a project of Virginia Tech and the University of Maryland, College Park. Funding for this Project was provided by the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families, Grant: # 90FM077-01-00. Couples are randomly assigned to receive or not to receive services to evaluate the effectiveness of the program.

“FULL-THROTTLE … MAGNIFICENT” — Washington Post

@JNAJEFFERSON, tweeting about Tiffany Haddish wearing her $4,000 Alexander McQueen dress to present in at the Oscars — the same dress she wore to the “Girls Trip” premiere and when she hosted “Saturday Night Live.” In her “SNL” monologue, Haddish talked about how she planned to wear the dress again and again. “If somebody invites me to a bar or bat mitzvah, guess what I’m wearing to it? This Alexander McQueen. If somebody invites me to an all-black party, guess what I’m wearing? This all-white dress.”

“Peak white feminism from Emma Stone. Pointing out that 4 of the nominees are men while ignoring that 2 of those men are minorities.”

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) It’s important for you to share information openly today — but only as much to get a certain message across efficiently. ARIES (March 21-April 19) Your responsibilities are multiplying at this point, and you’ll have to work harder to keep up with all you have to do. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) That which is hidden must be uncovered. You may be shocked to discover all that you’ve been overlooking. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Your instincts tell you to stay away from a certain situation, but your brain is telling you that it’s something from which you can benefit. MONDAY’S SOLUTION

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You can

avoid most serious harm today — but there is always the chance that an accident will lay you up for a while.

MONDAY’S SOLUTION

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You may not

wish to hear the same old warnings today — but keep listening, otherwise you’ll miss the important ones. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You may be so caught up in a friendly competition with a rival that you neglect to take care of something that could cause a serious setback. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You may have to take a back seat today to someone whose ideas are a little more up-to-date. You’ll have another turn.

TODAY: It will be cloudy and cold in the morning. During the afternoon, the next storm system will approach from the west with some spotty light rain (40 percent chance of measurable rain). It will likely rain tonight and enough cold air may get drawn in by the developing storm system for the rain to mix with and change to wet snow.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Now is the time for you to put the needs of another ahead of yours — again, perhaps. It’s not the first time you’ve known what to do. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Before moving to something you enjoy more, you must tend to a responsibility that presents more challenges than pleasures.

A man was arrested and is accused of stealing Frances McDormand’s Oscar trophy for best actress after the Academy Awards on Sunday. Terry Bryant, 47, was arrested on suspicion of felony grand theft for allegedly stealing the statue during the Governor’s Ball after-party. According to McDormand’s publicist, the actress and her Oscar “celebrated their reunion with a double cheeseburger from In-N-Out Burger.” (AP)
