Replacements get their rings

One replacement player made himself a replica Super Bowl XXII ring.

REDSKINS Thirty years later, the Redskins’ replacement players will receive the Super Bowl rings many have long thought they deserved. Quarterback Tony Robinson and defensive lineman Anthony Sagnella, two of the replacement players who led Washington to a 3-0 record during the 24-day standoff between the NFL players’ union and the league in 1987, were at the Virginia General Assembly on Tuesday. They were presented with a copy of House Joint Resolution No. 151, which commended the Redskins’ replacements for their “critical role in the team’s Super Bowlwinning season.” Redskins President Bruce Allen told them that all of the replacement players from the 1987 team would receive Super Bowl rings this spring. The exact date has yet to be announced. “Tears were in my eyes,” Robinson, the former Tennessee star who led the Redskins to a win over the Cowboys on “Monday Night Football” in the

replacements’ last game, told the Knoxville News Sentinel. “Thirty-some years later, but hey, better late than never,” he

said. “It’s a good feeling, a real good feeling. To be called Super Bowl champion, a lot of people can’t say that.”

In a news release, Redskins owner Dan Snyder acknowledged that the 3-0 record of the replacement players was part of the success of the 1987 Super Bowl-winning team. “Their contributions are part of Redskins history and represent an integral reason why a Lombardi Trophy from the 1987 campaign resides in our facility today,” Snyder said in the release. In September, ESPN premiered its “30 for 30” documentary “Year of the Scab,” which told the story of the replacement players who crossed the picket line to play for the Redskins during the three-week labor dispute. Most of the replacement players were released when the strike ended after Week 6, and only those who remained on the roster and played in at least one more game received a ring following Washington’s 42-10 win over Denver in Super Bowl XXII. The rest of the replacements were denied rings by the late Redskins owner Jack Kent Cooke. After the documentary, the Redskins worked with the film’s director, John Dorsey, and other key partners to make the rings a reality. Mission accomplished. SCOTT ALLEN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Council backs down from Bowser hearing

DENTON, MD.

Secret Service officer faces child porn charges

Mayor faced scrutiny after school chancellor forced to resign in Feb.

Metro mulls more service on Red Line THE WASHINGTON POST

THE DISTRICT The chairman of the D.C. Council’s education committee on Thursday backed down from his pledge to hold a hearing on former schools chancellor Antwan Wilson’s resignation, relieving pressure that had mounted for days on Mayor Muriel Bowser. Council member David Grosso, I-At Large, had issued a statement Monday saying he would call Bowser to testify under oath before his committee. The statement came after The Washington Post reported Wilson’s assertion that Bowser knew for months about his daughter’s improper transfer to a top District high school but only forced him to resign after it became public. Bowser has repeatedly said she was not aware of the transfer. But on Thursday — after speaking to the mayor and one of her attorneys — Grosso reneged on his plan, saying his committee’s attention would best be devoted to other problems in the school system. It was a stunning about-face for the council member and a boon for Bowser, who is in the midst of a re-election campaign and will now be spared the prospect of a public tribunal on her truthfulness.

TRANSPORTATION

D.C. Council chairman David Grosso originally wanted Mayor Muriel Bowser to speak under oath over the former D.C. school chancellor’s resignation.

Grosso said in an interview that he did not regret his initial announcement of a public hearing but had become convinced over the past three days it was not the right course. “I wanted to make sure people knew how seriously I took this,” he said. “After further deliberation, and analyzing where our time is best spent, I felt like I had to change my position. I know that’s unusual. I know that people might call me names and stuff. But I felt like it was the best thing to do.” The mayor told The Post’s editorial board that she would refuse to testify under oath before Grosso’s committee, saying it would be a “political circus” and that her office is already cooperating with

the inspector general. LaToya Foster, a spokeswoman for Bowser, said nobody in the mayor’s office had pressured Grosso to relent on holding a hearing. Grosso said that after he called for a public hearing he received a visit from Mark H. Tuohey, director of the Mayor’s Office of Legal Counsel, but said Tuohey had not urged him to change course. “He did not say ‘Don’t hold a hearing,’” Grosso said. “All we talked about was what was I trying to get at, what was the point.” Grosso said he also spoke with the mayor Wednesday night, but that she had not pushed him to back down. Metro officials are considering increasing the frequency of rush-hour service to Shady Grove by January 2019, in response to calls from Montgomery County officials who have urged the transit agency to end the practice known as “Red Line turn-backs.” Agency officials said they will seek input from the public on whether to add trains to the system so they can provide more peak-period service from Grosvenor-Strathmore to Shady Grove station. As it stands now, Metro employs a practice on the Red Line known as “turn-backs”: During peak periods, every other outbound train on the line reverses direction at Grosvenor-Strathmore and Silver Spring stations, part of an effort to increase the frequency of service in the downtown core. Restaurant owners say their profit margins are already thin, and mandating higher wages could hurt the city’s booming restaurant scene. “The reality is, tipped employees make far more, at least in this market, than what the minimum wage is,” said Kathy E. the district D.C. voters will decide whether to require restaurants to pay the minimum wage to waiters, bartenders and others who earn a “tipped wage” — a low base rate plus tips. The D.C. Board of Elections on Wednesday authorized a ballot measure for the June 19 election that would gradually increase the hourly wage — currently $3.33 — made by restaurant workers until it matches the city’s minimum wage for other workers by 2026. Initiative 77 pits the restaurant industry against progressive groups in a city with some of the nation’s most generous mandates for worker benefits. Tipped employees were exempt from the 2016 minimum wage hike that steadily raises the floor to $15 an hour by 2020, then ties future increases to inflation. Instead, the law sets a base hourly pay of $5 for tipped workers by 2020; that amount would also rise with inflation. Employers must make up the difference if workers don’t receive enough tips to make minimum wage. But critics of the split-wage system say some workers face intimidation and retaliation when they

Trump to meet Kim ‘by May’ Seoul: North Korea is committed to halting nuclear, missile testing POLITICS North Korea’s belligerent leader, Kim Jong Un, has asked President Trump for talks and Trump has agreed to meet him “by May,” South Korea’s national security adviser said at the White House on Thursday after delivering the invitation to the U.S. president. Kim has also committed to stopping nuclear and missile testing, even during joint military drills in South Korea next month, Chung Eui-yong said. After a year in which North

Korea fired intercontinental ballistic missiles capable of reaching all of the United States and tested what is widely thought to have been a hydrogen bomb, such a moratorium would be welcomed by the U.S. and the world. Kim Jong Un “expressed his eagerness to meet President Trump as soon as possible,” Chung said. “President Trump said he would meet Kim Jong Un by May.” Chung did not provide any information on where the meeting would be. In Seoul, the presidential Blue House clarified that the meeting would occur by the end of May. Chung led the South Korean delegation to North Korea earlier

House on Thursday night, Chung credited Trump for bringing the North Korean leader to the table. “I explained to President Trump that his leadership and his maximum pressure strategy … brought us to this juncture,” Chung said. A meeting would be a huge step between the two countries, avowed enemies for 70 years, and particularly between two leaders who have taken delight in insulting each other over the past year. Trump has mocked Kim as “little rocket man,” while the North Korean leader has called the American president a “dotard” and a “lunatic.”

TECHNOLOGY Twitter loves lies. A new study finds that false information on the social media network travels six times faster than the truth and reaches far more people. And you can’t blame bots; it’s us, say the authors of the largest study of online misinformation. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology looked at more than 126,000 stories tweeted millions of times between 2006 and the end of 2016 — before Donald Trump took office but during the combative presidential campaign. They found that “fake news” sped through Twitter “farther, faster, deeper and more broadly than the truth in all categories of information,” according to the study in Thursday’s journal Science. “No matter how you slice it, falsity wins out,” said co-author Deb Roy, who runs MIT’s Laboratory for Social Machines and is a former chief media scientist at Twitter. Twitter funded the study but had no say in the outcome, according to the researchers. The scientists calculated that the average false story takes about 10 hours to reach 1,500

Fighting fake news Social media companies have experimented with using computer algorithms and human fact-checkers to try to weed out false information and abuse online. Twitter earlier this month said it is seeking help from outside experts to better deal with the problem. And Facebook this week announced a partnership with The Associated Press to identify and debunk false and misleading stories about the midterm elections. (AP)

Twitter users, versus about 60 hours for the truth. On average, false information reaches 35 percent more people than true news. While true news stories almost never got retweeted to

1,000 people, the top 1 percent of the false ones got to as many as 100,000 people. And when the researchers looked at how stories cascade — how they link from one person to another like a family tree — false information reached as many as 24 generations, while true information maxed out at a dozen. “We have witnessed abuse, harassment, troll armies, manipulation through bots and human-coordination, misinformation campaigns and increasingly divisive echo chambers,” tweeted Twitter co-founder and CEO Jack Dorsey. “We aren’t proud of how people have taken advantage of our service, or our inability to address it fast enough.” SETH BORENSTEIN (AP)

POLITICS President Trump and his appointees have stocked federal agencies with ex-lobbyists and corporate lawyers who now help regulate the very industries from which they previously collected paychecks. A week after his inauguration, Trump signed an executive order that bars former lobbyists, lawyers and others from participating in any matter they lobbied or otherwise worked on for private clients within two years prior to going to work for the government. But records reviewed by The Associated Press show Trump’s top lawyer, White House counsel Don McGahn, has issued at least 24 ethics waivers to administration officials at the White House and executive branch agencies. Though the waivers were typically signed by McGahn months ago, the Office of Government Ethics disclosed several more on Wednesday. Trump finalizes tariffs President says he will exempt Mexico, Canada while they negotiate changes to NAFTA

WASHINGTONPOST.COM WORLDVIEWS

CHIP SOMODEVILLA (GETTY IMAGES)

POLITICS Unswayed by Republican warnings of a trade war, President Trump ordered steep new tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to the U.S. on Thursday, vowing to fight back against an “assault on our country” by foreign competitors. The president said he would exempt Canada and Mexico while negotiating for changes to the North American Free Trade Agreement. The new tariffs will take effect in 15 days, with Canada and Mexico indefinitely exempted “to see if we can make the deal,” Trump said. NAFTA talks are expected to resume early next month. “The American aluminum and steel industry has been ravaged by aggressive foreign trade practices. It’s really an assault on our country. It’s been an assault,” Trump said at the White House. He was joined by steel and aluminum workers holding white hard hats. American steel and aluminum workers have long been betrayed, but “that betrayal is now over,” Trump said. The former real estate developer said politicians had for years lamented the decline in the industries, but nobody was willing to take action. As he had indicated previously, Trump said he would levy tariffs of 25 percent on imported steel and 10 percent on aluminum. But he said during a Cabinet meeting earlier in the day that the penalties would “have a right to go up or down depending on the country and I’ll have a right to drop out countries or add countries. I just want fairness.” Business leaders, meanwhile,

President Trump announced Thursday that new tariffs on steel and aluminum will take effect in 15 days.

have continued to sound the alarm about the potential economic fallout from tariffs, with the president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce raising the specter of a global trade war. That scenario, Tom Donohue said, would endanger the economic momentum from the GOP tax cuts and Trump’s rollback of regulations. “We urge the administration to take this risk seriously,” Donohue said. The president suggested in the meeting with his Cabinet that Australia and “other countries” might also be spared, a shift that could soften the international blow amid threats of retaliation by trading partners. “We’re going to be very fair, we’re going to be very flexible but we’re going to protect the American worker as I said I would do in my campaign,” Trump said. People briefed on the plans ahead of the announcement

“I’m just not a fan of broad-based, across-the-board tariffs.” HOUSE SPEAKER PAUL RYAN,

appearing at a session with Home Depot employees in Atlanta. He pointed to the store’s many products that rely on steel and aluminum.

said all countries affected by the tariffs would be invited to negotiate with the administration to be exempted from the tariffs if they can address the threat their exports pose to U.S. manufacturers. The exemptions for Canada and Mexico could be ended if talks to renegotiate NAFTA stall. The process of announcing the penalties had been the subject of intense debate within the White House, pitting hard-liners

against free trade advocates such as outgoing economic adviser Gary Cohn. Congressional Republicans and business groups are bracing for the impact of the tariffs and the departure of Cohn, a former Goldman Sachs executive who has opposed them. More than 100 House Republicans wrote to Trump on Wednesday, asking him to reconsider “the idea of broad tariffs to avoid unintended negative consequences” to the U.S. economy and workers. Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake, a Republican, said he plans to introduce legislation next week to nullify the tariffs, though he has acknowledged that finding the votes to stop the president’s actions could be difficult. The president has said the tariffs are needed to reinforce lagging American steel and aluminum industries and protect national security. KEN THOMAS (AP)

In a move that can only be described as utterly Canadian, hundreds of doctors in Quebec are protesting their pay raises, saying they already make too much. As of Wednesday afternoon, more than 700 physicians, residents and medical students from the Canadian province had signed an online petition asking for their 1.4 percent pay raises to be canceled. A group named Medecins Quebecois Pour le Regime Public, which represents Quebec doctors and advocates for public health, started the petition Feb. 25. “We, Quebec doctors who believe in a strong public system, oppose the recent salary increase,” the petition reads in French. The group said it could not in good conscience accept raises when working conditions remain difficult for others in the profession — including nurses and clerks — and while patients “live with the lack of access to required services because of drastic cuts in recent years.” The petition ended by asking that the salary increases be canceled and the money be redistributed throughout Quebec’s health care system. The average salary for a specialist in Quebec is $403,537 (about $313,000 in American dollars) annually — compared with $367,154 ($285,000) in neighboring Ontario, according to the CBC. AMY B. WANG

nation+world New research claims remains found in 1940 were the lost aviator’s SCIENCE A new scientific study claims that bones found in 1940 on the Pacific island of Nikumaroro belong to Amelia Earhart, despite a forensic analysis of the remains conducted in 1941 that linked the bones to a man. The bones, revisited in the study “Amelia Earhart and the Nikumaroro Bones” by University of Tennessee professor Richard L. Jantz,

were discarded. For decades they have remained an enigma, as some have speculated that Earhart died a castaway on the island after her plane crashed. The bones were uncovered by a British expedition exploring the island after the team came upon a human skull, according to the study. The expedition’s officer ordered a more thorough search of the area, which resulted in the discovery of several other bones and part of what appeared to be a woman’s shoe. “There was suspicion at the time that the bones could be the

In attempting to compare the lost bones with Earhart’s bones, Jantz co-developed a computer program that estimated sex and ancestry using skeletal measurements. Jantz compared the lengths of the bones to Earhart’s measurements, using her height, weight, body build, limb lengths and proportions. His findings showed that Earhart’s bones were “more similar to the Nikumaroro bones than 99 [percent] of individuals in a large reference sample.” MARWA ELTAGOURI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

COMBINE MISSTEP

NFLPA upset team asked RB if he’s gay

Options in the offseason The Redskins have $23 million in cap space this offseason, according to the salary-tracking database Spotrac.com, and plenty of holes to fill before the NFL draft in April. How the team intends to use that space, however, is a bit of a mystery. There are needs at running back, receiver, defensive line, linebacker and in the secondary. Doug Williams, the team’s senior vice president of player personnel, has

said the goal is to plug holes through free agency but not “to spend big just to say we spent big.” KAREEM COPELAND (THE WASHINGTON POST)

It’s unlikely that Washington would spend significant money on a running back considering the draft holds plenty of options. There are at least 10 backs that could go in the first three rounds. Runners like Derrius Guice (LSU), Ronald Jones II (Southern California), Sony Michel (Georgia), Rashaad Penny (San Diego State) Kerryon Johnson (Auburn) and Nick Chubb (Georgia) are all early-round prospects that could contribute quickly.

There are several free agent options at receiver with Allen Robinson, Paul Richardson, Sammy Watkins, Mike Wallace, Donte Moncrief and others set to hit the market. The Redskins are looking for outside help to go along with Jamison Crowder and Josh Doctson. The team likes Ryan Grant, but he could leave in free agency. A healthy Jordan Reed at tight end would be a featured target for incoming quarterback Alex Smith.

A pass rusher would be a nice addition, but stopping the run should be a bigger priority after the team gave up a league-high 2,146 yards rushing in 2017. Jonathan Allen returns for his second year after suffering a season-ending Lisfranc sprain, and the Redskins are in the market for more big-bodied linemen. Sheldon Richardson and Dontari Poe are the top to names expected to be available, along with DaQuan Jones and Dominique Easley.

It seems unlikely that the Redskins will re-sign leading tackler Zach Brown. Williams said last week the team hadn’t spoken to the inside linebacker since making an initial offer. Brown, a six-year veteran, may prove too expensive for the Redskins, who could instead turn to Nigel Bradham, NaVorro Bowman, Avery Williamson, Preston Brown, Jon Bostic, Paul Posluszny, Demario Davis, Anthony Hitchens or Todd Davis.

The Redskins are thin here after trading away Kendall Fuller and likely watching Bashaud Breeland leave in free agency. “Every team tries to have at least five decent corners,” Williams said, which means Washington will need a couple. Malcolm Butler, Trumaine Johnson, Prince Amukamara, Morris Claiborne, Brent Grimes, Nevin Lawson, Patrick Robinson and T.J. Carrie are all set to be free agents.

Washington is also depleted at safety despite re-signing Deshazor Everett. It’s still unclear what will happen with Su’a Cravens, who was recently reinstated after abruptly leaving the team last season and going on the reserved/left squad list. Morgan Burnett, Eric Reid, Kenny Vaccaro, Tre Boston, Tyvon Branch, Bradley McDougald, Reggie Nelson and Quintin Demps will all be available options in free agency.

LSU running back Derrius Guice, below, said in a radio interview this week that one team at the NFL combine asked him, “do I like men,” and another suggested that his mother was a prostitute. Teams have used provocative questions in the past to gauge prospects’ psychological makeup. DeMaurice Smith, executive director of the NFL Players Association, told PFT Live on Thursday the as-yet unidentified team should be prohibited from attending the combine. NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said the league was “looking into the matter” and told The Washington Post that NFL policies “prohibit … seeking information concerning a player’s sexual orientation.” (TWP)

PLAYING UNDER THE TAG

Bell says he may start season late

The Steelers used the franchise tag on star running back Le’Veon Bell for a second straight year. And for a second straight year, Bell said he’s not going to show up for training camp unless he has a long-term contract. Last season, Bell skipped camp and showed up to work nine days before the start of the regular season. In an Instagram Live chat Wednesday, he said he may report even later: “I might come in Week 4.” (TWP)

Which Nats injuries are most concerning?

CHICAGO CONNECTION

Rose reunites with ex-Bulls in Minnesota

The Nationals have not developed much trust when it comes to injuries. They have made a top-down commitment to change this season, with goals of being more transparent and trying to give swifter updates when possible. Time will tell the extent to which that’s possible for an organization that values secrets and discretion as much as any. The team has provided hazy updates on several key

players. Below we analyze if fans should panic over any of them. CHELSEA JANES (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Outfielder Adam Eaton

Microfracture surgery on his knee, October 2017

Torn ACL, April 2017

Murphy seems unlikely to be ready for opening day, which is less than three weeks away. He is hitting off a tee and hitting soft toss but hasn’t gone through fielding drills or more agile baseball activities. Murphy doesn’t have enough time to get in baseball shape, especially because he doesn’t seem to be moving toward playing in games anytime soon. Until he does, speculating on his timeline will be total guesswork. He seems likely to miss at least the early part of the season, which may inspire minor panic for some fans.

Eaton is hitting on the field with teammates and going through fielding drills. He is farther along than Murphy by a wide margin, and will be nearly 11 months out of surgery by March 29, when the Nats open at Cincinnati — which is ample recovery time. The Nationals do not seem eager to rush him back. Manager Dave Martinez said this week he will probably see where Eaton stands next week before deciding when to play him in games. That leaves little time for Eaton to prepare, so he might miss opening day, though no one has said so officially.

Derrick Rose has signed with the Timberwolves for the rest of the season, a move that reunites the point guard with three mainstays from his days in Chicago — coach Tom Thibodeau, guard Jimmy Butler and forward Taj Gibson. Minnesota will be the fourth team for which Rose has played, and technically his fourth in the last 11 months. Rose, the 2011 NBA MVP, spent his first eight NBA years in Chicago, five of those with Thibodeau as his coach. The 29-year-old was with the Knicks last season and started this season with Cleveland, but appeared in only 16 games with the Cavaliers because of injuries and a brief self-imposed hiatus. Last month, the Cavs traded Rose to Utah, which waived him shortly afterward. (AP)

Relief pitcher Koda Glover

Outfielder Michael A. Taylor

Shoulder discomfort, dating back to summer 2017

Right side tightness, Monday

Glover reported to spring training and immediately dealt with shoulder discomfort, a bad sign given that the righthander had battled rotator cuff problems for the second half of last season and could not contribute down the stretch. He isn’t throwing yet and is limited to weight room work, physical therapy and treatment. Glover, 24, has been shut down long enough that any reboot will require a significant rebuild. He would need to start throwing soon to have any chance at opening day. This problem could linger for weeks into the season.

Taylor hasn’t participated in team drills since feeling tightness in his side Monday, but Martinez said he didn’t think the center fielder will need an MRI. Taylor, 26, missed time with oblique trouble last season, so when coaches learned of the discomfort, they pulled him from the lineup and told him to sit a few days. Oblique injuries always seem to last longer than expected — Taylor’s took more than four weeks to heal last year — but if this one isn’t serious, he could be back in a few days. If it drags on, Victor Robles could be an early call-up.

Triathlete is ‘doing well’ after saw attack Mhlengi Gwala, the South African triathlete who was attacked by three men who tried to cut off his legs with a chain saw during a training ride early Tuesday, is “doing well” after undergoing surgery, the BBC reports. A crowdfunding campaign has raised $33,000 toward his medical expenses and recovery. Initially thinking it was a mere robbery, Gwala was pulled into bushes by the men next to a road in Durban, on the eastern coast of South Africa. After offering them everything he had on him, they tried to cut off his legs with a chain saw but stopped when they could not cut through bone. Gwala, 26, dragged himself to safety after the early-morning attack. “When he spoke to doctors, they said they will be able to save his leg,” Sandile Shange, Gwala’s training partner, told the BBC, “and he will be able to walk and run again, but it is a long walk to recovery.” Shange told South Africa’s News24 that doctors had said “the blood flow is good, the only problem is with his tendons.” The motive for the attack is still unclear. Gwala, according to a South African sports official, overcame drug and alcohol addiction and represented the country at international competitions in Chicago in 2015 and in the Netherlands last year. DISNEY

Traveling through space with the boys, Meg (Storm Reid) insists they stop and ask for directions.

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

Partner in ‘Time’: In Meg, I see the girl I used to be There’s been a lot of discussion lately about the importance of people seeing movie characters who “look like them.” That’s never been a problem for me — white women are underrepresented in film when compared to white men, but it’s always been easy for me to find movie characters who look like me. Growing up, though, I was more interested in finding my representation in books. I had Laura Ingalls. I had Ramona Quimby. And I had Meg Murry. Meg is the smart, awkward, kind of grumpy teenager at the center of “A Wrinkle in Time.” In Disney’s adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s novel, Meg (Storm Reid), her genius

brother Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe) and cute schoolmate Calvin (Levi Miller) head off to save her father (Chris Pine), who took a transdimensional journey that has left him stuck on a faraway planet for four years. To make the trip, the gang uses a “tesseract,” a form of space travel only slightly less stressful than Delta. Director Ava DuVernay (“Selma”) paints a lush and lovely picture. The CGI’d faraway worlds pulse with life, and the three guides who aid Meg and company (Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling) wear costumes that reflect feminine and cultural power. While the film changes some details of the novel, it nails the story beautifully. At 11, I pretty much had the book memorized. Then

something shifted at 12. In the late ’80s/early ’90s, there simply wasn’t the robust youngadult genre we have now. When I left Meg and Laura and Ramona behind, I found myself in the California world of “Sweet Valley High” twins Jessica and Elizabeth. I can even recite what they looked like, because it was repeated in every book: sun-kissed blond hair, eyes the color of the sea, perfect size-6 figures (YES. THE BOOKS ACTUALLY SAID THAT). Too old for Anastasia Krupnik but too young for Jane Eyre, I read books that were about teenage girls who had eating disorders or were dying young. Judy Blume did her best, but I largely stopped reading about girls I wanted to be and started reading books about young women I thought

‘A Wrinkle in Time’ (PG, 115 min.) DIRECTOR: Ava DuVernay STARS: Storm Reid, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling IN A NUTSHELL: A teen, her brother and her friend travel across the universe to save her astrophysicist father, who’s been missing for years.

Michael B. Jordan will adopt inclusion riders for his Outlier Society production company

I should want to be. I can’t even imagine what it was like for girls of color back then; I might never have been a Sweet Valley-sized 6, but at least my skin tone matched theirs. Seeing a biracial Meg, as she is in the movie, must be powerful for the girls of today and the women whose fictional role models didn’t look like them. For me, watching Meg Murry come to life on the big screen reminded me of the first time I felt a character really got me — Meg hates her hair, she wears glasses and teachers often tell her she doesn’t live up to her potential. (Hearing that over and over in my youth haunts my adult life.) In “A Wrinkle in Time,” I finally saw a representation of the girl I was. Not only that, this Meg hears that she is powerful, that she is special, that everything she thought was a fault is a strength. Now, at least some girls with glasses and not-great report cards and hair with a mind of its own will get to hear the message. If only I could have heard it back then. For more movie musings, follow Kristen on Twitter: @kpagekirby

Angela (Addison Timlin) is a gifted writing student who idolizes her college professor Ted (Stanley Tucci) and lures him into an ill-fated folie a deux of thwarted ambition, bourgeois angst and sexual self-deception. Filmmaker Richard Levine seems content to stay on the surface of #MeToo-era button-pushing for its own sake, rather than risk more complex layers or a ruthlessly biting tone. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘The Strangers: Prey at Night’ R, 81 min.

This follow-up to 2008 cult horror hit “The Strangers” isn’t really a sequel. Rather than advancing the story — of a couple terrorized by three masked assailants wielding knives and an ax — “Prey at Night” repeats that formula with new victims. The result is a low-quality knockoff of something that wasn’t good to begin with. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (TWP)

At this rate, ‘Star Wars’ will outlast us all

This is the moment David Oyelowo realized what kind of movie “Gringo” was. Charlize Theron was unfazed.

‘Gringo’ goes south — in more ways than one The comedic chops of ‘Gringo’ (R, 110 min.) David Oyelowo are the DIRECTOR: Nash Edgerton STARS: David Oyelowo, Joel film’s only saving grace Edgerton, Charlize Theron FILM REVIEW The good news is David Oyelowo is a terrific comedic actor. The bad news is that the vehicle for this discovery, “Gringo ,” is a contrived action-comedy that is trying its hardest to shock and offend, but, you know, in a funny, cool B-movie way that involves someone’s toe getting cut off with wire clippers and Charlize Theron talking a lot about sex. Oyelowo plays Harold, a Nigerian immigrant and middle manager for a pharma company run by his friend Richard (Joel Edgerton). His bosses are massproducing a marijuana pill so that they’ll be ready to conquer the market when it’s legalized in the U.S. but, unbeknownst to him, they’re sustaining their business on illegal sales in Mexico facilitated by a local drug lord. We know Harold’s life is sad

IN A NUTSHELL: A comedy about a mild-mannered middle manager who goes to Mexico for a business trip involving a marijuana pill.

because we’re introduced to him in the middle of a bitter Chicago winter. He takes his pup out in the freezing cold in the morning and then goes to meet with his accountant, who informs Harold that his wife, Bonnie (Thandie Newton), is digging them into debt with her costly and unsuccessful interior design business. When Harold suggests that Bonnie not rent out office space while she’s still launching the business, she scoffs and it’s the end of the discussion. Greedy, selfish wife? Emasculated provider husband who is also mistreated at work? A soulless set of bosses who are

involved in a shady business arrangement in Mexico? Sounds like a setup for a crazy cartel-adjacent Mexican adventure. So Elaine, Richard and Harold go off to Mexico to cut off the illegal arm of their business, which Harold knows nothing about. None of them speaks Spanish — even Harold, who is supposed to be the main liaison there. Naturally, the drug lord they’re in business with is not ready to give up this weed pill supply and sets off to kidnap Harold. There’s a lot of gun violence, casual racism and hatefulness in general, especially toward women. Theron is given the worst character of all in Elaine, who not so subtly seduces every man around her and is never without a drink in her hand and an offensive comment at the ready. Oyelowo is the one who comes off without a scratch and actually has some quite amusing moments. If only the movie was a better showcase. LINDSEY BAHR (AP)

Deadline: “The Sopranos” creator David Chase making prequel film, “The Many Saints of Newark,” for New Line

That galaxy far, far away keeps expanding. In the latest in a flurry of “Star Wars” spinoffs that include two separate film series, the Walt Disney Co. announced Thursday that Jon Favreau will write and executive produce a liveaction “Star Wars” series for the company’s planned streaming platform. (The not-yet-named service is planned to launch in late 2019.) Favreau has some “Star Wars” experience, having provided a voice for “The Clone Wars” animated series. Favreau also has a role in the upcoming “Solo: A Star Wars Story.” “If you told me at 11 years old that I would be getting to tell stories in the Star Wars universe, I wouldn’t have believed you,” Favreau said. No details or release date were announced for Favreau’s series. (AP)

Film noir gets a modern, darkly comedic twist FILM REVIEW “Thoroughbreds” is a darkly comic tale — shot through with the hard-boiled fatalism of film noir — about two teenage girls in an affluent Connecticut suburb. The troubled Amanda (Olivia Cooke, above) has been struggling to rejoin society after her mutilation of a prized horse, an act that made her a social outcast. Her childhood friend Lily (Anya Taylor-Joy) lives with her mother (Francie Smith) and her coldly arrogant stepfather, Mark (Paul Sparks), in a huge mansion where she seems to have it all. As the film opens, a tenuous reunion has been engineered by Amanda’s mother, who is paying Lily to tutor (and befriend) her disturbed daughter. An uneasy alliance develops between the girls. Amanda impresses Lily with her jaded outlook, and Amanda soon plants the seed of a solution to Lily’s problematic relationship with Mark. This proposal leads them to a smalltime drug dealer (the late Anton Yelchin, in one of his final roles), with whom they enter into negotiations about taking on their dirty work. A psychological thriller set in a young-adult milieu, “Thoroughbreds” was inspired by classic film noir. Yet the movie’s plot machinations and brooding tone are, at times, a little too clever. And the anxious, percussive score reinforces what we already know: These are troubled people. PAT PADUA (FOR THE WASHINGTON POST)

The week’s best movie previews

‘Christopher Robin’

‘Mary Poppins Returns’

EXPECTED RELEASE: Aug. 3

EXPECTED RELEASE: Dec. 25

SUMMARY: You might be thinking, “Hey, didn’t we have this movie already?” That makes sense, since “Goodbye Christopher Robin” came out last year. This film, though, stars Ewan McGregor as the little boy all grown up. When things look bleak, his old bear friend shows up again to make things right. Probably with “hunny.” KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: Because a nanny’s work is never done, the flying baby sitter (Emily Blunt) is back. And she has a kicky new hat! The teaser doesn’t reveal a ton of information, and what we do get is mostly kite-based. So! We know there’s a kite, we know Lin-Manuel Miranda is in it, and we hope he does a better English accent than Dick Van Dyke did. K.P.K.

@NATHANLERNER, taking a shot at McDonald’s on Twitter after the company revealed it would flip its iconic golden arches upside-down on digital channels, some packaging and one California store sign in celebration of International Women’s Day, which was Thursday. Many Twitter users thought the gesture, described as a way of honoring “the extraordinary accomplishments of women everywhere,” was a joke.

“Jurassic Park: GO announced! Sorry, Jurassic World: ALIVE.”

Sincerely, Your friends at Express and the riders at Pentagon City Metro Station

@VIP0R, joking on Twitter about the similarities between the justannounced Jurassic World: Alive mobile game and its predecessor, the 2016 phenomenon Pokémon Go. Both are augmented reality games that use a mobile phone’s location and camera so players can capture and discover animals — in this case, dinosaurs — across a map. It will be released in the spring.

“Maybe instead of a cheap PR stunt where you make the M a W to ‘support’ women, you do something real — like paying your workers a living wage.”

@ROGENA63, tweeting about Mattel’s new line of Barbie dolls, based on inspiring women throughout history. The Barbies include historical figures, such as NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson and artist Frida Kahlo, and contemporary women including conservationist Bindi Irwin and film director Ava DuVernay. @TheSaharBar tweeted: “Now these are Barbies I can get down with.”

“Hey Netflix, Rachel Dolezal doesn’t need a documentary streamed on your site. She’s fraudulent and problematic.”

“A craft show? Not interested. Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman you say? Tell me more ...”

@LUXEPOSH, blasting Netflix’s decision to feature the documentary “The Rachel Divide,” about Rachel Dolezal, the controversial white woman who passed herself off as black for years. @LuxePosh urged Netflix to invest in “projects made by real black women.”

@PRORK, sharing his thoughts on

Twitter about NBC’s new crafting show “Making It.” Actors Amy Poehler and Nick Offerman will host the show. The pair famously played Leslie Knope and Ron Swanson on the network’s comedy hit “Parks and Recreation.”

Sudoku

DIFFICULT

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) It’s essential that you try to think the way others do today, or you’re likely to fall hopelessly behind. Keep at it. ARIES (March 21-April 19) You mustn’t make it harder than usual for another to help you. A commitment can be made, but you must know just what you’re getting into. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Others may only be pretending, but you can offer up the real thing — and be recognized for being more than just a pretty face. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) There is something for you to learn today, no matter how much you think you already know. You’ll be heading down a new path in short order.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

CANCER (June 21-July 22) Check

in with the experts to find out just what is going on with you — inside and out. Your emotional currents are shifting dramatically.

THURSDAY’S SOLUTION

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You’re waiting for someone to say the magic words: “Whatever you want!” It’s not likely to happen today, but you must be ready for it when it does. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) The more in touch with your feelings you are at this time, the more you can understand the feelings of those around you. Dig deeper.

FOUR RACK TOTAL Make a 2-7-letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. Seven-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

Comics POOCH CAFE | PAUL GILLIGAN

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You are asked to do something that might introduce you to an unfamiliar but certain peril. This is worth avoiding at all costs. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

What you do entirely yourself today is likely to become something that others remember for quite some time; don’t keep it a secret. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) What goes around comes around, so you must be sure that you’re treating others with the respect that you deserve at all times.

Today in History 1841: The U.S. Supreme Court, in United States v. The Amistad, rules 7-1 in favor of a group of illegally enslaved Africans who were captured off the U.S. coast after seizing control of a Spanish schooner, La Amistad; the justices rule that the Africans should be set free.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You may be mistaking a personal commitment with something like a job that you can leave whenever you choose. It’s not like that at all.

You will have reason to celebrate come day’s end, and it’s likely you’ll have others to celebrate with.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
