Residents of an Ohio neighborhood are hopping mad. Local officials recently removed a “kangaroo crossing” sign that mysteriously appeared in Columbus’ Clintonville neighborhood in 2014 and had delighted residents since. WOSU-FM reported with regret that it was its own inquiry about the sign that prompted its removal. A resident has since come forward to say he put the sign up as a joke and never expected it to remain so long. (EXPRESS)

Police say a bride in Arizona was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving after she was involved in a car crash on the way to her wedding. Young was taken to a police substation to have her blood drawn and was released without going to jail. It’s unknown if she made it to her wedding. (AP)

THE DISTRICT El Cabo stood in the thin afternoon sunlight, looking at faces that needed identifying. “We’re going to bring the photos here tomorrow, if there’s no wind,” Quique Aviles said. “Here” was the sidewalk in front of the 7-Eleven at Mount Pleasant Street and Kenyon Street Northwest, where El Cabo, a 63 -year- old house painter, has been hanging out for 40-odd years. The photos Aviles referred to were portraits taken over the past six months of the regulars who come there to meet friends, play checkers and chat. A photo exhibit and oral history of the spot and its denizens titled “La Esquina” (“The Corner” — those who hang out there are known as “esquineros”) opens today at GALA Hispanic Theatre in Columbia Heights. Aviles, the project’s director, and Rick Reinhard, its photographer, wanted to make sure they had everyone’s name right. El Cabo, a Salvadoran native whose real name is Jose Luis

The Washington area is home to the nation’s largest community of Salvadorans, who began coming in large numbers in the early 1980s when their country became engulfed in civil war. Many were men who left their families behind, and this strip of small shops and restaurants became a second home. “For most of us Salvadoreans, landing in D.C. meant landing on Mount Pleasant Street,” Aviles, 52, wrote in text to accompany the exhibit. Aviles, who describes himself as a “poet, actor and troublemaker,” arrived in 1980 at age 15 and lived a few blocks from the main strip. “When I go there — just walking those eight blocks, stopping at the beauty salon, the pharmacy, Los Primos — I feel better,” he said. “Mount Pleasant is the only place in this city that is a small town — un pueblito. Judge decides in favor of transgender Md. teen MARYLAND A Maryland high school’s policy blocking a transgender student from using the boys’ locker room singles him out for discrimination and “harms his health and well-being,” a federal judge in Baltimore has ruled. Max Brennan, a transgender teen from the Eastern Shore, was forced to use a separate genderneutral restroom to dress for gym class, making him choose at times between being late or being penalized for not changing. U.S. District Judge George L. Russell III is the latest judge, and

the first in Maryland, to find that the right of a transgender student to use restroom and locker room facilities matching their gender identity is protected by federal and state law. The policy barring Brennan from the boys’ locker room “does not apply to anyone else at the high school, and marks him as different for being transgender,” the judge wrote in a 40-page opinion issued this week that allows Brennan’s lawsuit to move forward. In a statement, Brennan, a 15-year-old who attends St. Michaels Middle High School,

called the decision a “great step in the right direction.” The decision comes after the Trump administration last year abandoned Obama administration-era federal guidelines that directed public schools to accommodate transgender students. The Supreme Court last March put off ruling in the separate case of Virginia transgender teen Gavin Grimm, delaying a decision about whether federal laws forbidding discrimination on the basis of sex also extend to gender identity. The age of Rockville High School basketball player Jimmy Sorunke is being investigated, Montgomery County Public Schools spokesperson Derek Turner confirmed Monday. The investigation, spurred by a Deadspin story published last week, could conclude as early as today. The Deadspin story alleged Sorunke may have been 20 years old at the start of his freshman year this fall — not 16, as Sorunke and his guardian, Joe Boncore, maintained this week. That also would mean the 6-foot-10 Sorunke played a full high school basketball season as a 20-year-old; he averaged 15.2 points for a Rockville team that finished 14-10 after going 2-22 the year before. Turner said MCPS received documentation at the time of Sorunke’s enrollment that indicated his birthday was June 11, 2001 — which would make him 16. (TWP)

No clarity: Sunshine Week brings darkness to light If sunshine is the best disinfectant, President Trump must pray for rain. He and his administration have a gloomy record when it comes to transparency, a particularly lamentable situation during Sunshine Week, which ends Saturday. Started by the American Society of News Editors (ASNE),

the observance began in 2005 to celebrate openness and transparency in government. But what’s to celebrate under Trump? ASNE has “significant concerns with the level of transparency demonstrated by the Trump administration,” said Kevin M. Goldberg, the organization’s legal counsel. Before he ran for president, Trump sounded like a champion of transparency,

declaring in a 2012 tweet that Barack Obama was “the least transparent President — ever —and he ran on transparency.” Setting aside the dubiousness of that declaration, the current president is beating Obama on the transparency deficit front. “It’s President Trump who, in the first [400] days of his Administration, has instituted a culture of secrecy in the Executive Branch and the White House,” said a report issued by Rep. John Sarbanes, Md., chairman of the Democratic Reform Task Force. Trump’s approach to transparency was defined before he became president. Trump ran against transparency by

refusing to release his tax returns. The refusal to release his taxes remains Trump’s most notable example of opaqueness, but it certainly is

not alone. To mark Sunshine Week, examples of darkness have been catalogued by Rep. Elijah Cummings, Md., the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. “The Trump Administration is shrouded in secrecy — hiding foreign meetings, conflicts of interest, and self-dealing that benefit President Trump and his family,” Cummings said by email. “The American people deserve to know how the President and his businesses are profiting from the presidency.” Follow Joe Davidson on Twitter @joedavidsonWP

Trump views designs for planned border wall

WHACKED

Florida takes on its iguana infestation

SAN DIEGO President Trump got his chance Tuesday to inspect prototypes for the “big, beautiful border wall” he wants to build to separate the U.S. from Mexico, saying strengthening the border would help stop “99 percent” of illegal immigration — or, he allowed, “maybe more than that.” The president, making his first trip to California as president, appeared engaged as he was briefed on eight border wall designs. He said he preferred a fully concrete wall because it was the hardest to climb, but he noted that it needed to be see-through. Trump said the first thing he noticed on the drive to view the prototypes was the patched-up holes in part of the existing fence at the border. “We have a lousy wall over here now, but at least it stops 90, 95 percent,” Trump said. “When we put up the real wall, we’re going to stop 99 percent. Maybe more than that.” Trump’s visit was greeted with peaceful protests by demonstrators both for and against his planned wall. The trip also came amid an escalating battle between his administration and the liberal state, which has refused to help federal agents

detain immigrants who are in the United States illegally. The president said Tuesday that the state’s sanctuary policies “put the entire nation at risk.” His Justice Department

sued California last week over a trio of the state’s immigration laws. “They’re the best friend of the criminal,” Trump said. “That’s what exactly is happening. The criminals take refuge in these sanctuary cities and it’s very dangerous for our police and enforcement folks.” This wasn’t Trump’s first visit to the border. He traveled to Laredo — one of Texas’ safest cities — weeks after declaring his candidacy in June 2015. Trump told reporters then that he was putting himself “in great danger” by coming to the border. But, he said, “I have to do it. I love this country.”

Wildlife biologists from the University of Florida are using bolt guns and blunt force trauma to tackle the latest species to invade southern Florida: iguanas. The state recently deputized the biologists to shock and stun the lizards with bolt guns, then deal a single blow to the head for a death that’s “as humane as possible.” Iguanas are native to Mexico, Central and South America, but came to Florida as pets in the 1960s. They destroy landscape vegetation and collapse sidewalks and canals by burrowing, leading to erosion. They can also transmit salmonella to humans. (TWP)

‘Our coverage was racist,’ Nat Geo admits Months ago, when National Geographic set out to make race the sole focus of its April 2018 issue, it decided to engage in some soul-searching. In preparation, editor in chief Susan Goldberg tapped John Edwin Mason, a University of Virginia professor specializing in the history of photography and of Africa, to dive into the magazine’s past. She discussed his findings in an editor’s note titled “For Decades, Our Coverage Was Racist. To Rise Above Our Past, We Must Acknowledge It,” published online Monday. “What Mason found in short was that until the 1970s National Geographic all but ignored people of color who lived in the United States, rarely acknowledging them beyond laborers or domestic workers,” Goldberg wrote. “Meanwhile it pictured ‘natives’ elsewhere as exotics, famously and frequently unclothed, happy hunters, noble savages — every type of cliche.” Goldberg noted that she is the first woman and the first Jewish person to serve as editor in chief, so she’s sensitive, she said, to the magazine’s legacy of discrimination. “It hurts to share the appalling stories from the magazine’s past,” she wrote. “But when we decided to devote our April magazine to the topic of race, we thought we should examine our own history before turning our reportorial gaze on others.” DEREK HAWKINS

LONDON Russia on Tuesday dismissed accusations of involvement in the poisoning of an ex-spy and his daughter as “nonsense,” saying it will cooperate with a British investigation only if it receives samples of the nerve agent believed to have been used. Police, meanwhile, said the investigation into who poisoned Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, will last many weeks and

that they are not ready to identify any persons of interest in the inquiry. The father and daughter remained in critical condition. British Prime Minister Theresa May said Russia’s involvement is “highly likely,” and gave the country a deadline of midnight Tuesday to explain its actions in the case. She is reviewing a range of economic and diplomatic measures in retaliation for the assault with what she identified as the military-grade nerve agent Novichok. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Russian requests to see Novichok samples have

been turned down. The Russian Embassy in London tweeted that it will not respond to the ultimatum without the samples. Russian officials and media have accused Britain of seeking to influence Sunday’s election, which President Vladimir Putin is expected to win easily. Also on Tuesday, Russian media outlets reported that Nikolai Glushkov, a Russian businessman and associate of deceased Kremlin critic Boris Berezovsky, had been found dead in his London home. London police were investigating the “unexplained” death. GREGORY KATZ AND NATALIYA VASILYEVA (AP)

Trump ousts Tillerson President says he considered move for ‘a long time’ because of policy disagreements From N. Korea to Iran, big tests await Pompeo

Fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson waves goodbye after speaking Tuesday at the State Department.

at the State Department and throughout the national security community flummoxed, particularly as the circumstances of the firing were in dispute. White House officials said that as Tillerson traveled through Africa last week, White House chief of staff John Kelly called to wake him up in the wee hours there Saturday to alert him that Trump had decided to replace him. Trump had told his chief of staff he wanted to announce he was replacing Tillerson on Twitter. Kelly urged him to hold off. Kelly then suggested Tillerson return home as soon as possible. He cut his trip short Monday. But a top State Department spokesman offered a different version of events — and was swiftly fired for contradicting the White House. Steve Goldstein, undersecretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs, said that Tillerson was “unaware of the reason” for his firing and had

Trump’s pick to lead CIA President Trump on Tuesday chose CIA veteran Gina Haspel to be the spy agency’s next director, tapping a woman who spent multiple tours overseas and is respected by the workforce but is deeply tied to the agency’s use of brutal interrogation measures on terrorism suspects. not spoken directly with Trump. Goldstein said Kelly told Tillerson in the call only that “he could expect a tweet” from the president, but it was not conveyed that the

decision to fire him was final. “He found out that he was terminated today,” Goldstein said. The announcement of Tillerson’s departure sent shock waves across the globe. Many U.S. diplomats and foreign leaders reacted with disbelief because they assumed Tillerson had finally begun to settle into his job after rumors of his ouster had swirled for months. Trump told reporters that he had been considering removing Tillerson for “a long time.” “I actually got along well with Rex, but really it was a different mindset, a different thinking,” Trump said. “When you look at the Iran deal, I think it’s terrible. I guess he thought it was OK. … So we were not really thinking the same. With Mike, Mike Pompeo, we have a very similar thought process. I think it’s going to go very well.” ASHLEY PARKER, PHILIP RUCKER, JOHN HUDSON AND CAROL D. LEONNIG (THE WASHINGTON POST)

ANDREW HARNIK (AP)

NATIONAL SECURITY President Trump announced Tuesday he has ousted Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and plans to nominate CIA Director Mike Pompeo to replace him as the nation’s top diplomat, orchestrating a major change to his national security team amid delicate outreach that includes possible talks with North Korea. Trump and Tillerson have had a fraught relationship for many months. Trump told reporters Tuesday that he ultimately decided to fire the secretary because they disagreed over strategy in key areas of foreign policy, such as the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, the approach to North Korea and the overall tone of U.S. diplomacy. Tillerson said he received a call from Trump around noon Tuesday, more than three hours after his firing was first reported by The Washington Post and announced minutes later in a tweet from the president. His voice quivering during a speech at the State Department, Tillerson thanked career diplomats for their “honesty and integrity” and the American people for “acts of kindness,” and he singled out Defense Secretary Jim Mattis for their partnership and mutual support of diplomacy. But Tillerson notably did not thank Trump or praise his policies. Tillerson said he will remain in his post until March 31 but is delegating all authorities for running the State Department to Deputy Secretary John Sullivan, and is committed to ensuring “an orderly and smooth transition.” Tillerson also made a clear statement about Russian aggression: “Much work remains to respond to the troubling behavior and actions on the part of the Russian government.” The shake-up left officials

NATIONAL SECURITY The Trump administration and its new secretary of state — assuming the Senate confirms Mike Pompeo relatively soon — will face a confluence of foreign policy decisions and potential national security crises this spring that would challenge even the most experienced diplomats. A meeting between President Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, tentatively to be held by the end of May, will bring two volatile leaders face to face with the highest stakes imaginable. Trump has said he will decide in mid-May whether to end U.S. participation in the Iran nuclear deal, a determination that could profoundly change relationships between the United States and its closest European allies. And beginning Monday in rapid succession, Trump is due to host the leaders of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar for complicated talks on Iran, Syria and the IsraeliPalestinian peace process. Rex Tillerson, who was fired Tuesday as secretary of state, had often been publicly at odds with Trump’s impulsive approach to foreign policy. Pompeo is likely to be more amenable. As a firebrand congressman from Kansas and a tea party leader, Pompeo sharply opposed the Iran nuclear deal. And while Tillerson urged step-by-step caution in dealings with North Korea, Pompeo has congratulated Trump on his boldness. KAREN D EYOUNG (TWP)

Seek calm this summer CAMP TRENDS Some kids play dodgeball at camp; others meditate. Mention the “m” word to a 10-year-old, however, and you’ll probably get this reaction: “People think, ‘Oh, my gosh, it’s going to be silent — I don’t know if I can be quiet for long, extended periods of time,’ ” says La Sarmiento, a leader with Inward Bound Mindfulness Education’s Virginia Teen Retreat. “But it’s not like that at all.” Here’s what it is like: At iBme’s week-long program at Serenity Ridge Retreat Center in Shipman, Va., teens rise at 7 a.m. to do a seated meditation practice

before breakfast. Later, they do two hours of guided mindfulness instruction — both seated and walking, inside and outside. They close their eyes, take a couple of deep breaths and do a body scan from the head to the toes, noting any tension or stress. After a gentle yoga session, they might write a poem or join a workshop on laughter yoga. “They learn how to anchor into the present moment through breath, body sensation or sound,” Sarmiento says. “I like to say that you’re watching your own reality show when you meditate. everyone else’s reality show, but this practice is going inward and seeing, ‘What’s really happening for me right now, and how can I best take care of myself given what’s happening?’ ” The iBme program is one of a growing number of summer camp options designed to teach kids and teens mindfulness skills, which advocates say are necessary for a healthy, wellbalanced life. “I’m 53, and when I was a teenager, I don’t think I had half the stresses teens do today in terms of technology and constantly being bombarded by news and current events,” Sarmiento says, adding that campers turn their smartphones and tablets over to staff on day one. The retreat, which runs from July 27 to Aug. 1, is open to teens ages 15 to 19; tuition is 1 percent of the family’s annual income, up to $2,000. Other local options, like Kids Yoga Summer Camp at Breathing Space on Capitol Hill, cater to the younger set. There, days are filled with yoga movement classes, relaxation activities, games, crafts and lots of outdoor playtime. There are eight weeklong options ($400, held at Christ Church, 620 G St. SE). No yoga experience is necessary, says director Jennifer Mueller. “Kids’ yoga class looks very different from adult yoga class,” she says. “The teaching is very visual and engaging, and students are encouraged to do the poses however feels right in their bodies.” Mueller says one of the campers’ most loved activities is candle gazing — minus the live flames. Color-changing tea lights are situated around the room, and kids relax on the floor while watching the lights dance from red to purple and back again. They also delight in the “mind jar” — a snow globe filled with glitter that they’re free to shake, creating a cloud of swirls. “The act of just watching and paying attention is relaxing for our brains,” Mueller says. “A lot of life right now is really overstimulating, so these activities are valued and the relaxation time is among our students’ favorite activities.”

SPIRIT CAMP ARLINGTON

If mindfulness- oriented camps are gradually becoming more mainstream, Circle Yoga’s Summer Camp in D.C. was ahead of the trend. The program has been offered for more than 15 years, and there are now seven week-long options ($365 for fullday camp; $250 for the half-day version). Many kids come back for several weeks each summer and return year after year, instructor Linda Feldman says. Kids kick off the day coloring mandalas, then sing mindfulness-themed camp songs so popular with families that the studio turned them into a CD. They do a playful yoga session, with moves like “yoga freeze dance,” plus breathing exercises, guided meditation and a foot massage. They have snacks in a Zen garden and free playtime in a local playground, and they spend time silent journaling. “You’d be amazed how they do this for 20 minutes — they love it,” Feldman says. “It gives

kids the permission to just find some stillness, ease, creativity and joy.” On the first day of Dancing Jaguar’s Spirit Camp Arlington ($195 to $275), meanwhile, kids create a spirit toolbox: a cardboard box-turned-home for the tools they collect over the week to nurture their inner selves. By the time they leave, it’s filled with chakra stones (crystals thought to heal different parts of the body), a book that teaches calming breathing techniques

and a mask that represents their spirit animal. Founder Eva Goulette created the first version of the week-long camp in Maine five years ago to help kids realize “there’s an entire world to explore inside.” “This is how we’re going to reach the children of today,” she says. “These kids will grow up to be balanced in mind, body and spirit. They come out of camp really understanding they have tools to help themselves.” Mueller echoes that sentiment. “It’s something that becomes very easy for them to translate to other times: ‘When I’m stressed out, or when I’m angry with my mom or dad, I can take a quiet time and do a visualization and let that steam out,’ ” she says. And it’s fun, too. When Mueller asked her daughter how to describe the Breathing Space program, the 10-year-old said: “ ‘You have to explain it’s a very silly camp.’ That part she thought was very important.” ANGELA HAUPT (FOR EXPRESS)

CAMP TRENDS When Bethesda native Christian Vaughan first tagged along with his best friend to TIC Summer Camp, he didn’t just learn how to make the video games he was obsessed with playing — he found a career path, too. Vaughn, 20, attended his first two-week session at TIC’s Maryland campus (located at the Connelly School of the Holy Child in Potomac, Md.) about seven years ago, learning the ropes of computer programming and video game design. Now he’s majoring in computer science at the Rochester Institute of Technology — and

still playing a ton of video games. “It was my introduction to programming,” Vaughan says. “It got me into it.” After several summers as a camper, he became a counselor, staff assistant and, this summer, a leadership training director. Camps like TIC, which also has locations in Virginia and D.C. (June 18-Aug. 17, $880), give gamers who are glued to their TV or computer screens a chance to understand what makes those games tick — and learn a pretty lucrative skill in the process. “By learning something fun like video games, they’re learning the foundations of programming,” says Daniel Morais, TIC’s program director. And having fun is what makes the skills stick. “Part of the

appeal is that it doesn’t feel like work,” Vaughn says. Local video game camps cater to kids who know nothing about video game design and to those who are already familiar with programming languages like Java or Python. At Lavner Camps, a Pennsylvania-based company with more than 20 locations, including a D.C. camp at George Washington University, younger kids (6-12) can start with a video game design camp with apps, where they make a few games, including one for their phone, using a simple drag-and-drop-style computer program called Clickteam Fusion 2.5. Older kids (9-13) can take video game design with GameMaker, a more advanced software that even professional

game designers use. Within each camp, there’s room for beginners to more advanced students. “Year over year, our kids can progress to the next level or next programming language,” says Justin Lavner, the CEO and executive director of Lavner Camps. Some of the skills kids will learn at the week-long camps (June 18-Aug. 3, $329-$549) are artistic design, storyboarding, coding logic, computer programming and how to beta test a new game. Because there will always be bugs, Lavner says. “They learn trial and error. [Like,] ‘Why didn’t my game automatically go to the next level?’ ” he says. “You’re testing and seeing what you missed.” ID Tech, a top tech-focused summer camp, has several locations in the D.C. area, including at American University, Howard University and the University of Maryland (June 18-Aug. 10, $829-$1,379). Student campers can stay overnight or attend as day students. For parents, the camps can supplement a (sometimes annoying) hobby with valuable skills. “Help them turn this passion into a potential career opportunity, a potential college path,” says Mark Moreno, the D.C. regional manager for iD Tech. At i D Tech’s M i necraft camps, for instance, kids who are obsessed with the game can learn some Java coding in an

accessible way to unpack how the game is coded. Moreno says former students from iD Tech are now working with Microsoft, Facebook and Epic Games. “It’s that starting place,” he says. “Today it’s iD Tech. Tomorrow it’s your college application and your future career.” The camps all encourage kids to continue working on their project or building new ones after camp is over. Students can buy the software to use at home, or Lavner suggests taking advantage of free trials of the programs, which can be expensive. Some campers bring back projects from previous summers to continue perfecting and upgrading them. Vaughan remembers one summer when he and his friend took their “fighting monsters in a dungeon” game from a previous session and updated it with 3-D graphics with a counselor’s help. “It’s still a project I point to when kids don’t know what to make and don’t think they can make a cool game,” he says. For all the debate over whether video games rot the brain or make it stronger, video game-focused camps appeal even to those parents looking to limit screen time. “Campers are learning to make games, not just play them,” Lavner says. “They’re learning to be proactive and not just reactive.” ERIN BYLANDER (FOR EXPRESS)

summeradventures concern. “Asking all those questions before that first morning is really helpful,” says Collatz. “It shows their camper that they’re fully prepared and less stressed, which makes for an easier transition. And we’re able to give them the best answers ahead of time.” Read supply lists and daily itineraries closely so your child goes to camp each day with the proper gear. “If we’re kayaking on Tuesday, don’t come prepared to go caving,” says Katie Barr, 24, a former counselor at Adventure Links in Clifton, Va., who’s now the camp’s customer experience coordinator. “If kids come unprepared for the day, we have to use our resources and figure out how we can accommodate them for that day.”

One counselor says lonely kids should seek out camps that focus on their interests: “That’s an automatic way to connect with other kids.”

Ever wonder what your kids’ camp counselors are actually thinking? How annoyed are they by last-minute questions, helicopter parenting or missing supplies? We spoke with some current and former counselors at area summer camps to find out what they wish parents knew. Read on to see what you could be doing better.

You may already write your forgetful child’s name on obvious things like bags, sweatshirts and towels. But you should also label items like swim goggles and Tupperware containers that can be easily misplaced. “Our saying here is, ‘if you name it, you can claim it,’” says Deidre Schrader, 50, who started out as a counselor for the Fairfax County Park Authority and now serves as camp director at Cub Run RECenter in Chantilly, Va. “We can get it back to you if it has a name or initials on it.”

A little help at home will make it easier for your kids to meet new friends.

Labeling everything keeps the camp lost-and-found pile from getting out of control.

When parents are calm, counselors say, their nervous campers are more prepared for potentially scary activities like whitewater rafting.

Being properly prepared helps everything run more smoothly every day. “I wish families knew how committed we are to making sure they’re prepared ahead of time,” says Skylar Collatz, 23, who

started as a counselor at the D.C. area’s Headfirst Summer Camps in 2014 and is now a program leader. Don’t wait until the first day of camp to turn in that paperwork you got weeks ago or to raise a

If your son or daughter doesn’t know many other kids at their camp, give them some tips and advice before the first day. Practice ways they can introduce themselves and get to know other campers. “Encourage your kids to go out on a limb and go to a camp where they don’t know anyone,” says Chrissy Duffy, 22, who was a counselor at TIC Summer Camp the last two summers and will be the co-athletic director of the camp’s D.C. location in 2018. “If they pick a camp focused on a certain subject [they’re interested in], they will find kids

saying they had a bad day when we could have slid in there and made a small change.”

Staying calm yourself helps ease kids’ nerves. You may be scared about sending your child to camp for the first time. But if you let that show, odds are your little one will feel scared too. “The first morning of camp, I always tell parents that the No. 1 thing I want them to do is smile,” Schrader says. “If you’re confident that your kids are going to have a great day and you come off that way, they will feel that.”

When kids know what to expect at camp, they’ll adjust much more quickly.

Summer camp isn’t the same as school.

Go over daily schedules with your kids before camp starts. If you know staff or counselors’ names ahead of time, let your kids get familiar with them in advance. Talk about what they would do if they weren’t feeling well or needed help with something. “We can’t fix it unless we know about it,” Schrader says. “We don’t want them going home and

Yes, you want your kids to learn new things when they go to camp. But they need a break from the classroom. “I’ve had parents ask me if we’re going to study the biology of the plants and fish we see when we’re at our lake location,”

says Charley Doerrman, 23, who’ll be returning for his fifth summer as a counselor at Bar-T summer camp in Gaithersburg, Md., in 2018. “Kids just need time to play. The ability to go outside and get dirty is what a lot of kids are missing nowadays.”

You might be surprised what your kids can achieve if you give them room to grow. Summer camp might be the first time your child tries something potentially intimidating like rock climbing. “Parents might think that their kids will be scared to do some of the activities with us,” Barr says. “And then they accomplish things their parents never realized they would have done. Let them have that space to be on their own and learn about themselves. Let their kids have this opportunity, because it’s going to lead to some kind of meaningful transformation in their life.” BETH LUBERECKI (FOR EXPRESS)

We’re joining the pack Girls have more ways to get involved with Boy Scouts of America than ever before CAMPS The Boy Scouts of America is putting out the welcome mat for girls, too, at more of its summer camps this year. The changes follow a decision by the Scouts last fall to admit girls into more programs. For some camps, like Cub Scout Camps, this will be the first summer that girls can participate as full members, not just as tag-along sisters. Other BSA programs with summer camp options, like Venturing, have been coed for years. Girls who have experienced the programs say they can be empowering. “When I joined Venturing, I was a shy and afraid little 14-year-old, says Maddy Agers of St. Louis, now a high school senior and Venturing president for her area. “Since then, I’ve learned to repel off a cliff

backward, go on overnight trips in the wilderness, go mountain climbing and mountain biking, lead overnight canoe trips and brave zip lines. But learning leadership skills has been my favorite part of Venturing. Agers first experienced Cub Scout summer camps when she would visit her brother at one. She’s now working on a Summit Award, the Venturing equivalent of Eagle Scout, and has earned a college scholarship for community leadership thanks to her role in Venturing. Cub Scouts, geared to firstthrough fifth-graders, just started opening up to girls this year for the season beginning June 1. But girls ages 14 to 20 are welcome in Venturing and other BSA-run programs like Exploring, Sea Scouts and STEM Scouts. In another step forward for

girls interested in learning outdoor skills through Boy Scouts of America summer camps, this year one of the organization’s four “high adventure bases — Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, N.M. — will begin hosting family scouting for families with girls or boys. Similar family programs are under development at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia, says Al Lambert, an assistant chief scout executive for BSA. Agers points out that girls like her have been part of the BSA tradition for a long time. Minnesota-nice deal Cousins reportedly intends to sign with Vikings for 3 years, up to $86M guaranteed NFL Free agent Kirk Cousins has made arrangements to visit the Vikings today and is expected to complete a three-year deal with Minnesota worth an estimated $84 million to $86 million, according to multiple people familiar with the deliberations. If finalized, the contract would be fully or almost fully guaranteed, one of those people said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because teams cannot complete deals with free agents before the start of the league year at 4 p.m. today. Mike McCartney, the agent for the former Redskins quarterback, told ESPN on Tuesday that “no final decisions have been made. The plan is to visit Minnesota first.” The Vikings have long been considered the favorite to land

Cousins, the top free agent on the market, but the Jets also expressed interest. His pending deal with the Vikings is said to be worth a little more than $28 million per season. That would surpass the current NFL record for average annual salary held by quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who will average $27.5 million over the next five seasons with the 49ers. Cousins’ record probably won’t last long because quarterback Aaron Rodgers is working on a new contract with the Packers. Having the deal be fully or almost fully guaranteed would be a significant step, given that some observers have been critical of the lack of guaranteed contracts in the NFL. “Kirk Cousins is a hero for all the young players that will follow after him,” Seahawks wide

Cousins’ documentary Quarterback Kirk Cousins told ESPN this week that he’s hired a video crew to follow him and his family for weeks with the idea of making a documentary that gives a glimpse of his life in the offseason and portrays the decision-making process for NFL free agents. receiver Doug Baldwin wrote on Twitter. “Now we need more players to bet on themselves until fully guaranteed contracts are the norm and not the exception.” Tagging Cousins a third straight time this year would have cost the Redskins an unwieldy $34.5 million. So Washington moved on, trading for Alex Smith, and Cousins became an

unrestricted free agent on the heels of three straight 4,000-yard passing seasons for the Redskins. Cousins, 29, will face the expectations that come with that contract in Minnesota, along with the expectation that he will be the final piece to a Super Bowl puzzle. The Vikings reached the NFC title game last season with Case Keenum under center. If Cousins makes the entire $85 million or so in Minnesota, it would push his career earnings in the NFL above an estimated $130 million. He would be eligible for free agency again n at age 32. The Broncos, Jets s and Cardinals once were thought ought to be among the teams lined ed up to bid for Cousins. But by the e NFL combine, some within the e sport had become convinced Cousins usins would end up in Minnesota. MARK ARK MASKE AND

Richardson to get $20M guaranteed Washington addressed one of its key offseason needs Tuesday, agreeing on a contract with former Seahawks wideout Paul Richardson. The contract, when signed today, will be for five years and $40 million with $20 million guaranteed, according to a person familiar with the discussions. The Redskins wanted a wide receiver to line up opposite Josh Doctson and allow Jamison Crowder to play in the slot. Richardson, 25, had 44 receptions, 703 yards and six touchdowns for Seattle in 2017, all career highs. Known for his speed, Richardson ran a 4.4-second 40-yard dash at the NFL combine and was drafted in the second round out of Colorado by Seattle in 2014. (TWP)

The 30-year-old QB began last season as Minnesota’s starter but now will join Arizona on a one-year, $20 million deal. He has started 80 games for the Rams, Eagles and Vikings but struggled with injuries.

After five years as a starting DT in Carolina, the 28-year-old will reunite with his former defensive coordinator, Bills coach Sean McDermott. Buffalo re-signed veteran DT Kyle Williams to a oneyear, $6 million deal.

Green Bay whiffed on big-name tight ends in previous years with Martellus Bennett and Jared Cook, but they’ll try again with a threeyear deal for Graham, 31. At 6 feet 7, he posted 10 TD catches for Seattle last year.

Saints to re-sign QB Drew Brees for 2 years, $50M

After trading Jarvis Landry to Cleveland, Miami reportedly will add the former Patriots receiver, one of Tom Brady’s favorite targets. Amendola, 32, caught 61 passes last year.

AP AND THINKSTOCK/EXPRESS ILLUSTRATION

David Byrne faces a nation The ex-Talking Heads singer explores his version of ‘American Utopia’ with a new album and tour MUSIC David Byrne has some observations about American life these days, and they worry him. The former Talking Heads frontman and prolific artist sees people divided into camps, not talking to one another, with politicians on both sides representing moneyed interests, rather than the people. Something’s gone wrong, he says. Byrne, who was born in Scotland and became a U.S. citizen in 2012, says his new album, “American Utopia,” is about the longing people have amid fears and frustrations. “They’re all wondering, ‘Could things be done in a slightly different way? Is there a better way than the way we’ve ended up?’ ” he says. The album’s lead single, “Everybody’s Coming to My House,” co-written co written with Brian Eno, is No. No

5 on Billboard’s adult alternative songs chart, giving Byrne his first Top 10 hit in 25 years. Last week he launched an international, 90some city tour, which he calls his most ambitious since the shows filmed for Talking Heads’ 1984 Jonathan Demme film “Stop Making Sense,” considered among the best concert films of all time. “American Utopia” is Byrne’s first solo album in 14 years. In between those records, his work included albums with St. Vincent, musicals about Imelda Marcos and Joan of Arc, books about urban bicycling and how music works, and interactive art based on neuroscience. Producer Patrick Dillett, who has collaborated with Byrne for years and worked on “American Utopia” — along with Eno and Scottish producer Rodaidh

The album is “describing things the way … I see them. Describing myself, and my own confusions and issues.” McDonald — says Byrne’s collaborative nature and openness to try new things are among the qualities that set him apart. “He does a lot of things well, but he’s not doing them to be known for it. It’s a way of becoming a fuller person,” Dillett says. “If I could be someone when I grow up, I would be him.” Byrne, 65, says the album

is “describing things the way they are, or the way I see them. Describing myself, and my own confusions and issues.” He adds that artists “can offer not just a litany of complaints, but some kind of hope and answers and another way of viewing things.” Byrne, who will perform at the Coachella and New Orleans jazz festivals during his sixmonth trek on the road, says fans should not expect a “Stop Making Sense” nostalgia trip. “Many people will expect to relive some experience from their childhood,” he says. “No. I’m not a time machine.” e. But conceptually, the new tour is similar to that in its simplicity. mplicity. It “completely rethinks nks what ys, “what you can do,” Byrne says, a band, what a show can be.”

A humble, familycentered Snoop Dogg emerges on his 32-track gospel album “Bible of Love,” out Friday. He quotes from the Book of Isaiah — “No weapon formed against me shall prosper” — and has nice things to say about his devout grandmother. “I’m just a nobody trying to tell everybody about somebody who can save anybody,” he raps in one song. Snoop doesn’t perform on every track, preferring to showcase a variety of gospel performers, such as The Clark Sisters, John P. Kee and Kim Burrell. Thanks to Snoop, non-gospel folk will now be exposed to such powerhouses as Tye Tribbett, whose infectious “You” makes hearts race, and K-Ci, whose voice flutters like a butterfly on “No One Else.” MARK KENNEDY (AP)

entertainment 1970-2018 Craig Mack, known for first putting Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Bad Boy record label on the map with his iconic single “Flava in Ya Ear,” died Monday at 47. “God bless my friend,” his producer Alvin Toney told the New York Daily News, which first reported the news of Mack’s death of heart failure. The New York rapper’s summer 1994 single became an instant hit and turned into a mustplay classic and hip-hop anthem. A remix included a breakout guest verse from Notorious B.I.G., whose “Ready to Die” album

dropped a week before Mack’s debut, “Project: Funk da World.” Mack was signed to Bad Boy after Diddy heard him freestyle outside of a Manhattan club.

“Craig is hip-hop’s George Clinton, because his stuff is really off the wall,” Diddy told The New York Times in 1995. After releasing second album “Operation: Get Down” in 1997, the rapper left the music industry to devote his life to religion. But he was apparently working on new projects, including music and a documentary about his life. Toney told the Daily News he saw Mack last week at his South Carolina church for filming. “Nobody got to understand his story,” Toney said. “I wanted the world to know the talent he had.” ELAHE IZADI (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Timothy wrote a long and creepy post on the San Antonio Zoo’s Facebook page Monday asking Fiona, “Are you up?” and saying that he’s going to send her a letter “or something” every Thursday to “express all of my feelings for you.” Hey, Timothy — leave Fiona alone!!

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You may be haunted by a memory today that you can only shake after you acknowledge that you were indeed responsible for a past error. ARIES (March 21-April 19) You’re eager to see things done in a new way, but today may not be the right day to make the change. Listen to someone else’s warnings. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You may actually be able to make a dream come true today and go where no one has gone before — figuratively, at least. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You may be far from one who inspires you and provides comfort when you need it, but that doesn’t mean you can drop the ball. Buckle down!

TUESDAY’S SOLUTION

CANCER (June 21-July 22) You

may be able to take someone else’s impossible idea and turn it into something exciting and promising.

TUESDAY’S SOLUTION

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You may realize that in your attempts to organize things more strictly, you have actually opened the door to chaos. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Someone is trying to tell you, in a specific way, what to do — but you may not be interpreting the signals correctly yet. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) It’s time

for you to listen to what an expert has to tell you about a situation that threatens to get out of control soon.

TODAY: An upper-level disturbance rolls through, causing morning sunshine to fade under partly cloudy skies by midday and the afternoon, along with the chance for flurries or light rain showers. Highs are expected to reach the low to mid-40s, but clouds could limit the duration at those peak temperatures.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You’re

eager to do something others have only contemplated but never tried. The odds are in your favor right now. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You’re likely to be given a choice today that requires you to consider things in a whole new light. Someone reveals himself to you. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Dec. 21) You will want to treat yourself to something special before the day is out, but take care that you’re not simply overindulging.

Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik on Tuesday confirmed reports that they have broken up after two years together. The Sun was the first to report on the rumors. “Gigi and I had an incredibly meaningful, loving and fun relationship,” Malik tweeted. “She has such an incredible soul.” Hadid followed with her own statement 12 minutes later: “Breakup statements often seem impersonal because there is really no way to put into words what two people experience together over a few years,” the model tweeted. “I’m forever grateful for the love, time and life lessons that Z and I shared.” (EXPRESS)
