IWd @kWd" Fk[hje H_Ye The long and increasingly messy Republican presidential contest is starting to hit Mitt Romney where it hurts most: his wallet. New signs of financial stress are emerging in Romney’s campaign, which has built a wide lead in delegates thanks in part to the might of his bank account and multistate operation. As rival Rick Santorum’s surprising strength keeps extending the nomination battle, Romney has scaled back expenses, trimmed field staff and begun to count more on free media coverage. And he’s still relying on an allied super political action committee to supplement his spending on TV ads. This week, the former Massachusetts governor was forced to spend two days privately courting donors, even as his Republican rivals were wooing voters ahead of pivotal elections in places like Illinois, where he

From Fruit Fly to Barfly Study: Sex-deprived, scorned male insects head for the booze D[m Oeha Guys, when your sweetheart says “no thanks” to sex, do you knock back a few stiff drinks to feel better? Turns out fruit flies do pretty much the same thing. That’s the word from a new study that may explain why both species react that way. In Friday’s issue of the journal Science, researchers propose a biological explanation for why “Not tonight, dear” may lead to “Gimme another beer.” If it proves true in people, it may lead to new medications to fight alcoholism. One by one, these eager Lotharios were put into a container with a female that had just mated. So she was really, really not interested in
>_jj_d] j^[ IWkY[ IY_[dY[ In the fruit fly study, University of California researchers focused on a substance in the fly brain called NPF. They theorize that pleasurable activities, like having sex, boost the activity of brain circuits that use NPF, and that feels good. If a fly is denied sex, the system goes into deficit, driving the fly to seek other rewarding activities. Further research into NPF brain circuitry could shed light on the biology of alcohol abuse and point to treatments someday, said Troy Zars of the University of Missouri in Columbia, who didn’t participate in the new work. doing it again anytime soon. She would run away. She would kick the male. She would stick out her egglaying organ to hold him at bay. The male flies went through three hour-long sessions of this every day for four days. After that experience, rejected flies were put in vials and given a choice of regular food or alcohol-laced food. They consistently went for the alcohol more than did the male flies that
had just mated. In fact, they evidently got plastered. “I think it’s a pretty good bet that it will translate to humans,” said Ulrike Heberlein of the University of California, San Francisco, who led the research. If so, “one can say we could now understand why a negative experience, such as a sexual rejection, could drive somebody to drink.” MALCOLM RIT TER (AP)

Karzai: Pull Back Foreign Troops Afghan leader urges NATO to speed up transfer of security
TERRORISM.
AMIR SHAH AND DEB RIECHMANN (AP)
8WYaijeho $$$ Afghan President Hamid Karzai is known for making dramatic demands and then backing off under U.S. pressure. His call on Thursday for an immediate pullback of foreign troops — even if aimed at his domestic audience — will likely become another issue of contention between the Afghans and their international allies at a time of growing war weariness in the U.S. and its international coalition. (AP)
AWXkb" 7\]^Wd_ijWd The U.S. campaign in Afghanistan suffered a double blow Thursday: The Taliban broke off talks with the U.S., and President Hamid Karzai said NATO should pull out of rural areas and speed up the transfer of security responsibilities to Afghan forces nationwide in the wake of the killing of 16 civilians. The moves represent new setbacks to America’s strategy for ending the 10-year-old war as support for the conflict is plummeting. Part of the U.S. exit strategy is to transfer authority gradually to Afghan forces. Another tack is to pull the Taliban into talks with the Afghan government, though it’s unclear that there has been any progress

A U.S. soldier, who has not been named, is suspected of going on a shooting rampage Sunday in villages near his rural base in southern Afghanistan, killing nine children and seven other civilians. Karzai told Panetta that everything must be done to prevent any such incidents in the future, including speeding up timelines for NATO pullbacks. The meeting took place a day after President Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron said that they and their NATO allies were committed to shifting to a support role in Afghanistan in 2013, a year earlier than scheduled.
since January. Though Karzai has said that he wanted foreign troops to transition out of rural areas, the apparent call for an immediate exit is new. Karzai also said he now wants Afghan forces to take the lead for countrywide security in 2013, seemingly a move to push the U.S. toward an earlier drawdown. A statement released by Karzai’s office said that during his meeting with visiting U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, the president

Young Americans aren’t as concerned about the planet as their parents were, a study finds
))
BABY BOOMERS
Researchers found that, when surveyed decades ago, about a third of young baby boomers said it was important to become personally involved in programs to clean up the environment. In comparison, only about a quarter of young Gen Xers when surveyed — and 21 percent of Millennials — said the same. (AP)
=h[[d <Wj_]k[ They have a reputation for being environmentally minded do-gooders. But an academic analysis of surveys spanning more than 40 years has found that today’s young Americans are less interested in the environment and in conserving resources — and often less civic-minded overall — than their elders were when they were young. The findings go against the widespread belief that environmental issues have hit home with today’s young adults, known as Millennials, who have grown up amid climate change discussion and the mantra “reduce, reuse, recycle. The environment is often listed among top concerns of young voters. “I was shocked, said Jean Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State University and one of the study’s authors. “We have the perception that we’re getting through to people. But, at least compared to previous eras, we’re not.

This study, published online this month in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, looked at the life goals, concern for others and civic orientation of three young generations — baby boomers, Gen Xers and Millennials. Based on two longstanding national surveys of high school seniors and college freshmen, Twenge and her colleagues found a decline, over the past four decades, in young people’s trust in others, their interest in government and the time they said they spent thinking about social problems. Steepest of all was a steady decline in concern about the environment, and taking personal action to save it. Even so, those working in the environmental field — including some Millennials themselves — aren’t that surprised by the ďŹ ndings. Emily Stokes, a 20-year-old geography student at Western Washington University, grew up in the PaciďŹ c Northwest. She thinks people there are more likely to take environmen-

tal issues more seriously because of the natural beauty that surrounds them. “But I still ďŹ nd myself pretty frustrated a lot of the time,â€? Stokes said of her generation. Kelly Benoit, a 20-year-old political science student at Northeastern University in Massachusetts, went as far as calling her peers “lazy.â€?
9^Wbb[d]_d] j^[ Jh[dZ When Beth Christensen, a professor who heads the environmental studies program at Adelphi University on New York’s Long Island, attended Rutgers University in the 1980s, it was unusual to find a fellow student who hadn’t hiked and spent time in the woods, she said. But a lot of young people also simply don’t spend that much time exploring “the unpaved world nowadays, Christensen said, so one of her goals is to get her students out into marshes and beaches — and even coral reefs in Australia. Elsewhere, at Babson College in Massachusetts, there is student housing called the “Green Tower, where residents focus on conserving resources — a growing housing trend on many college campuses. And at Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania, students are running a biodiesel plant on campus and building “permaculture, or indefinitely sustainable, gardens in their backyards. (AP)
“I think it can be due to our upbringing. We want what we want when we want it,â€? said Benoit. Mark Potosnak, an environmental science professor at DePaul University in Chicago, has noticed an increase in skepticism — or confusion — about climate change among his students as the national debate has heightened. That leads to fatigue, he said. “It’s not so much that they don’t think it’s important. They’re just worn out,â€? Potosnak said. Twenge, the study’s lead author, is sometimes pegged as a critic of this generation because of her work about them. But, she says, the numbers speak for themselves. “I hope that young people see these ďŹ ndings as a challenge rather than a criticism,â€? she said, adding that the lack of interest in environmental issues isn’t exclusive to young people. “This is a change in overall culture,â€? Twenge said, “and young people reect the changes in culture.â€? MARTHA IRVINE (AP)

Be careful what you ask a comedian. That’s my advice based on the advice you’ll find doled out in the new book from The Believer magazine. Contributors including Amy Sedaris, Zach Galifianakis and Louis C.K. answer a variety of questions. The most critical, in my opinion, was posed to author George Saunders: What book should I be reading on the subway? I won’t ruin the whole joke, but I’ll tell you his response ends with the suggestion that you get a copy of, “Care to Make Love in That Gross Little Space Between Cars?” If you
haven’t guessed, that’s the title The Believer stole for this book ($15, Vintage). Hopefully no one will actually try to take you up on the proposition
if you’ve got this book cracked open while riding the train. “It wouldn’t be hygienic,” notes Saunders, whose dirty little secret is that he lives in Syracuse, N.Y. — where there is no subway system. But he’s taken e nou g h r ide s t o know that you’re judged by the book in your hands, even if you’re not reading it. “There’s something sweetly public about reading a book on the train. It’s an advertisement for yourself, a window into your life,” he says. When you see books in other riders’ hands, you instantly know something about them. “It’s a genuine way to connect w it h someone.” (A nd no, he doesn’t mean in that gross space between cars.) With the rise of iPads, Kindles and Nooks, we’re losing the ability to spy on our fellow passengers’ reading habits. But, remarkably, we haven’t totally lost it. According to the Tab Farm, a website that tracks media consumption on the New York subway, 17 percent of riders still haul around paperbacks and hardcovers as commuter entertainment. I don’t have hard numbers for Metro, but I suspect we’re similarly literary. I’ve tried to conduct informal surveys during my recent rides, but I keep getting freaked out by the titles I’ve seen. “Practical Aikido.” “I Don’t Want to Kill You.” “Unbreakable.” Um, are these people trying to send me a message? Let’s hope no more so than I am with my copy of “Care to Make Love in That Gross Little Space Between Cars?”

D.C. Triathlon Canceled
D.C. Candidate Wanted Jail, Got It Shadow Senate office hopeful is protesting lack of voting rights MWi^_d]jed The increasingly bizarre race for District Shadow Senator took a new turn Thursday when a leading candidate in the April 3 primary got his wish and was sentenced to jail. That happened after his case was transferred to a new judge when Ross’s opponent, incumbent Michael D. Brown, reached out to the old judge to try to influence her decison.
Pete Ross, a local businessman who has put $200,000 of his own money into the race, received one day in jail and a $50 fine after he was arrested during a votingrights demonstration on Capitol Hill last year. Ross has been taken into custody so he can spend the night in jail. While a misdemeanor charge of this kind usually results in a nominal fine, Ross pushed for the maximum sentence of 90 days to highlight the lack of D.C. voting rights. Ross had drawn up plans to continue his campaign from jail through election day.

Although they are not recognized by Congress, their role is to lobby for the District’s statehood. They have offices in the John A. Wilson Building, where the D.C. Council and Mayor are also located. But before his sentencing, the case was transferred out of Magistrate Judge Elizabeth Carroll Wingo’s courtroom on Thursday morning, according to the Ross campaign

Hoyas can erase their recent NCAA woes by beating Belmont >eoWi >eefi
Georgetown coach John Thompson III doesn’t like to look to the past. If he did, he might be consumed this week with his Hoyas’ recent NCAA Tournament disappointments. Thompson needs no reminder that Georgetown lost in their first game the past two years, to upstart Ohio in 2010 and then to Cinderella VCU last year. He’s faced plenty of questions this week about those early exits, and his answer to all is simple: This team is different. The Hoyas get their chance to prove it, starting Friday against No. 14 seed Belmont in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Senior guard Jason Clark certainly hasn’t forgotten the sting of past Marches. “The last two years were a disappointment. We all know that,” said Clark. “We try to get it out of our heads, but it doesn’t leave your mind.” While the Hoyas have hit hard times in recent postseasons — they were relegated to the NIT in 2009 and were the victims of a massive comeback by Stephen Curry and Davidson a year earlier — they are rich in history, thanks mostly to Thompson’s father, John Thompson

But Maryland coach Brenda Frese wasn’t bothered at all by her team’s NCAA Tournament seeding, particularly because she has a history of turning a second seed into something much greater. Her 2006 national championship team began the tournament as a No. 2 seed before tearing through the bracket and winning the title. “It has [crossed my mind], but I’m not superstitious at all,” Frese said. “I don’t think the number in front of your name guarantees anything. ... McGee and Young were two of the longest-tenured players on the Wizards’ roster but both were slated to become free agents this offseason. McGee would’ve been a restricted free agent, meaning that the Wizards would have been able to match any offer sheet, but the 7-foot-1 big man was expected to garner a huge salary in the open market. McGee was one of just five players in the NBA averaging at least 11.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and two blocked shots, but he also had yet to progress on the defensive end and continued to make confusing plays on the court. Instead of dedicating big money to McGee, the Wizards acquired an established big man in Nene, who is averaging 13.4 points and 7.4 rebounds in his 10th season, all in Denver. Nene, 29, signed a five-year, $65 million contract with the Nuggets last December. MICHAEL LEE (THE WASHINGTON POST )
J^[ H[Zia_di The Redskins agreed to terms with two-time Pro Bowl strong safety Brandon Meriweather on Thursday, filling a void created by the apparent departure of LaRon Landry. The contract, according to a person with knowledge of the situation, is worth $6 million over two years.

Syracuse Avoids Historic Upset C[dÊi 9ebb[][ >eefi Syracuse had a lot bigger problems than missing its starting center. The Orange were staring at NCAA Tournament history. A No. 1 seed has never lost to a No. 16 seed, and they were trailing North Carolina-Asheville with just over six minutes to play. Led by reserve forward James Southerland, Syracuse rallied for a 72-65 victory over the Bulldogs on Thursday in the second round of the East Regional. The sellout crowd of 18,927— except for those wearing Orange — were solidly behind the underdogs throughout the second half, and they were irate over the final two minutes with calls that went against the Bulldogs. Syracuse, which won the national championship in 2003, had already made negative history in the tournament, becoming the first No. 2 seed to lose to a 15 when it fell 73-69 to Richmond in 1991. The Orange managed to avoid

adding another black mark by holding Asheville to one field goal over the final minute while they went 6 of 7 from the free throw line. Syracuse (32-2) will play eighthseeded Kansas State in the third round on Saturday at the Consol
Energy Center. The Wildcats beat Southern Mississippi 70-64. The Bulldogs (24-10), who had talked Wednesday of becoming the first 16 seed to beat a No. 1, were led by J.P. Primm’s 18 points. They led 34-30 at halftime —
the third 16 to do that — but the Orange took the lead for good with 6:17 left on a turnaround jumper by Southerland. The Bulldogs got within three points three times in the final 1:04 but could get no closer as Syracuse made its free throws and the officials made a couple of controversial calls. Southerland had 15 points and a season-high eight rebounds for the Orange, who finished 5 of 23 from 3-point range, including missing 17 of their first 20 from behind the arc. JIM O’CONNELL (AP)

what he likes, and a little of what she likes, blend it together and both people can be happy. What’s the biggest decorating mistake people make? People go into a showroom and buy the sofa on the f loor without measuring. It should take you a while to make a big purchase. People tend to buy too much furniture or things that are too big for their rooms.

Jeff Lewis BRAVO INTERIOR DESIGN HOST, FLASH SALE FAN On Bravo’s “Flipping Out,” DIYer/ designer Jeff Lewis was known as the real estate-savvy rehabber with a plan to fix up houses and resell them for big bucks. The fallout from the real estate market meltdown means the slightly OCD Lewis is now more into redoing spaces for clients to actually live in. That process often involves brokering design deals betweeen husbands and wives, kids and parents, etc., a process he documents on his new show, “Interior Therapy With Jeff Lewis” (Wed., 9 p.m., Bravo). Is bad decor a sign of a bad relationship? Decor can be a good reflection of where someone is in life. I can walk into a house and tell if someone is depressed. If things are neglected in their house, they are usu-
ally neglecting something else in their lives. What do you do to help people make their spaces and lives better? It sometimes takes shaming or shocking people out of their unhealthy slumps. Sometimes it takes convincing people to clean up their mess for their kids. The show implies there is often a decorating imbalance in marriage. Why is that? Well, there needs to be compromise in interior design as well as in relationships. Often the wife has all the say. I’m there to help people mix their styles. And fortunately, right now, we’re mixing styles in a transitional way. The days of committing to a particular style are over. You can shop and take a little of
You’re known for being blunt. Can clients take it? Yes, I am forthright. People know not to ask me a question if they don’t want the truth. Does working with an interior designer have to be pricey? No. If you want to remodel a room, you don’t have to hire a designer for the whole thing. You can hire one as a consultant for a couple of hours, and they’ll tell you what to do. What quick fix will make my place look better in a day? Remove 30 percent of your things, and put in a lot of live plants, trees and flowers. It’ll transform things. Any favorite secret sources for design items? I’ve been shopping a lot on flash sales like Onekingslane.com. They have great ideas and good products. Web shopping means you can get a lot of work done in very little time. JENNIFER BARGER (E XPRESS)

JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT cycling couldn’t get any
ANSWERS FROM THE SHOE BLOGGER
This summer, my husband and I are taking our honeymoon in Ibiza. Sun, sand and dubstep concerts for two weeks! I don’t usually fall in the category of girls who need help picking the perfect shoes for any occasion, but my husband is different. I’m going to have trouble getting him to let go of his New Balances. What shoes should he pack? — VAL
Flat-Out Tasty PART WAFFLE, PART COOKIE, stroopwafels from Stroopies are fully delicious. The Dutch-style delicacies, sold at Smucker Farms of Lancaster Co. ($10 for six, 2118 14th St. NW, 202-986-7332), consist of caramel syrup sandwiched between cinnamon-y, crispy wafer rounds. We suggest warming the goodies over a cup of coffee, putting them at the bottom of a bowl of ice cream or nibbling them straight up.

greener, along comes the pop-up bicycle basket (Mioculture.com, $75). Made from recycled steel alloy and coated with an eco-friendly finish, the bin secures easily to your ride for a hands-free commute or trip to the farmers market. Cool-looking options include a front or rear design in black, white or — what else? — green. Plus, since it’s shipped flat, there’s little cardboard waste or pesky package popcorn.
This Is the Bright Spot WORLD MARKET, WATCH YOUR global-cool back. There’s a new cheap-
chic furnishings den in town. Nadeau (5710 A-B General Washington Drive, Alexandria; 703-642-0875; Furniturewithasoul.com) fills a warehousey space with Indian and Indonesian wooden furniture like benches (shown, $200), bookcases ($235) and marble-topped kitchen islands ($347-$611) plus funky accessories like Union Jack pillows ($20) and lots of Buddha heads.
A Sweet Step MOST WANNABE CINDERELLAS know that pretty shoes and pain are often synonymous. But Anyi Lu designs made-in-Italy pumps, sandals and flats that both look and feel good thanks to soft leathers and balanced heels. The Snifter Test CONTRARY TO its name, Moonshine men’s cologne doesn’t reek of sour mash or come in a banjo bottle. Instead, the cedary, peppery aftershave — new at GoodWood ($72, 1428 U St. NW; 202- 986-3640) — smells like something a mod mountain man would splash on after donning J. Crew flannels and downloading the Punch Brothers. Still, the flask-shaped bottle does not mean you can gulp the stuff, Mr. Boozy.

Manolo says, frankly, the Manolo prefers to go to Ibiza in the winter, when everything is quiet and the club kiddies are not there, partying down until all hours of the morning. But then the Manolo is now the old duddy-fuddy, who likes to shake his walking stick at the rambunctious youths as they cross his lawn. Of the course, if you were the young persons, newly married and deeply in the love, then the Manolo thinks that Ibiza during the high season could be enormous good fun. There is much to see, from the prehistoric megaliths, to the bucolic countryside, to the English tourists vomiting in the gutters after the long night of revelry! As for what your husband should wear, the Manolo suggests something espadrille-ish, as the Ibiza mode is casual and Mediterranean, and what is more casual and Mediterranean than the espadrille for the men? Here is the Lado Espadrille from the Sperry Topsider ($80, Zappos. com) in the black canvas, the Spanish shoe with the American twist. It also comes in the striped canvas! Ask the Manolo a question at manolo@shoeblogs.com. Visit the Manolo at shoeblogs.com.

Assume Nothing I did not want to see “21 Jump Street.” The screening was at the end of a long day in the middle of an even longer week, but I had to see it because I was going to be interviewing its stars, Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. But I did not, I repeat, Want. To. Go. I wasn’t a fan of the TV series, and the whole movie just looked, well, bad. But like a scary dive bar that turns 8o Ah_ij[d out to have the best FW][#A_hXo burger on the planet, “21 Jump Street” was one of the funniest, smartest films I’ve seen in a long time. It’s not really a remake of the ’80s cop drama — instead, it’s a blended drink made of ’80s teen films, a healthy slug of snark and a winking knowledge that the premise of the movie is pretty silly. It works in the way “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” worked (though it’s not THAT funny): The film isn’t about what it appears to be about. Just as “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” wasn’t really about sex but about the emotional risk that comes with human relationships, “21 Jump Street” is about how the rules of high school can be absolutely impenetrable — particularly once you’ve left high school. I try not to make up my mind about movies before I’ve seen them, and the pleasant surprise that was “21 Jump Street” is the reason why. Read Kristen’s previous columns at: expressnightout.com/thereelist
The unlikely pairing of Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill gives ‘21 Jump Street’ legs <_bc H[l_[m An unbridled, self-aware goofiness propels “21 Jump Street,” an enterprise that sounded dreadful from, well, the jump. To take a 1980s television series, reboot it into a 21st-century bromance and cast Apatow-comedy alum Jonah Hill and blandly handsome leading man Channing Tatum in the leads sounded to many like the final death knell for a movie industry that has been running on the fumes of remakes and babyboomer nostalgia for years now. In fact, the lack of originality or

looking dullard, respectively, who were arch-opposites in their high school but have become best buds since going through the police academy together. When they’re assigned to a high school to bust a drug ring (a scant seven years after graduating) each seizes on the opportunities — in Schimdt’s case, to heal four years of rejection, and in Jenko’s, to relive his past glory. It doesn’t work out that way, and what ensues is less a cool action flick reminiscent of Johnny Depp’s “21 Jump Street” than a role-rever-
sal comedy full of good-natured jokes and sight gags, which include Schmidt’s pathetic attempt to imitate Eminem in the movie’s opening high school flashback and a climactic car chase during which Hill is wearing a Peter Pan costume and Tatum is dressed as a molecule with pompoms stuck to his shirt. It’s those playful, even wholesome moments that stand out in this movie, despite the profanity and partying ethic that earned it an R rating. Much of the humor in “21 Jump
Street” derives from how much has changed for teenagers since Schmidt and Jenko were in school. Suddenly, Jenko notes, liking comic books, veganism and tolerance are cool — and not reasons for punching someone out. “I blame ‘Glee,’ ” he says at one point. “[Forget] you, ‘Glee!’ ” “21 Jump Street” might be yet a not her produc t of Holly wood’s recycling program, but it deserves to be noticed. fake horses. It’s sort of funny. It’s just not as funny as everyone involved seems to think it is. Not that anyone’s actually laughing on camera. Ferrell — who has built a career on his ability to maintain a deadpan — is especially committed here. In fact, his investment in the character of Armando Alvarez — the dim scion of a Mexican rancher who falls in love with the fiancee (Rodriguez) of his brother (Diego Luna), and who must rescue her from a violent drug lord (Gael García Bernal) — is a wonder to behold. It’s also a bit of an enigma. With “Casa de Mi Padre,” it’s often hard to tell the difference between when it’s making fun of bad movies and when it’s being one. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN

<_bc H[l_[m What’s the big idea with “Casa de Mi Padre”? Is the joke that Will Ferrell — playing a Mexican version of his signature, slightly dense Everyman — speaks nothing but Spanish throughout the film? Or is it that the movie is a parody of how cheesy a cheaply made, south-ofthe-border Western can get? It’s got to be one or the other, because those are the two hardestworking gags in the film, a deliberately inept spoof of accidentally inept filmmaking. Directed by Matt Piedmont and written by Andrew Steele (both former “Saturday Night Live” writers), the tongue-incheeky “Casa de Mi Padre” presents itself as a Mexican B movie, complete with sloppy editing, obviously painted backdrops, an overall yellow palette meant to evoke expired film stock, and a budget so low that a scene of Ferrell and Genesis Rodriguez on horseback uses

The films “Chico & Rita” and “A Cat in Paris” were surprises when they popped up among this year’s Oscar nominees for best animated feature, along with “Kung Fu Panda 2,” “Puss in Boots” and “Rango.” Who’d ever heard of — let alone seen — these films, which don’t boast big Hollywood names and

animated — in a refreshingly oldfashioned hand-drawn style — but it’s anything but a children’s cartoon. The bittersweet film traces the romance of Chico, a Cuban piano player, and Rita, a singer, over nearly 50 years, and features sex, drugs and gun violence, along with an original jazz score by the Cuban pianist Bebo Valdes. “Chico & Rita” is more grownup than a lot of the live-action films recognized at the Oscars. It takes a medium that sometimes seems to have been co-opted by characters that can’t be brought to life any other way and reminds us that it is the story, not stunts, that breathes life into a cartoon. <eh É@[\\"Ê B_\[ ?i 7bb H[bWj[Z <_bc H[l_[m Written and directed by Mark and Jay Duplass (“The Puffy Chair,” “Baghead”), “Jeff, Who Lives at Home” hews to the filmmakers’ spontaneous, low-fi aesthetic, even as they take their game up a notch with such name actors as Jason Segel, Ed Helms and Susan Sarandon. Like their film “Cyrus,” it’s the modest, mumblecore version of the seemingly perennial story of manchildren in the promised land. Jeff (Segel), who at 30 is still living with his mother and doing little more than bong hits for a living, receives a phone call from his mom (Sarandon) asking him to go to Home Depot to get some wood glue to repair a kitchen shutter. That simple task sends Jeff — who sees the world as a theater of random events leading to “some perfect moment” — on an errand that results in all sorts of detours and digressions. A bus ride ends up in a basketball game; a chance meeting with his brother Pat (Ed Helms) ends up in a graveyard and a Hampton Inn — in Jeff’s spacedout mind, it’s all connected, leading somehow to the meaning and purpose that have eluded him. This discursive day-in-some-lives gives audiences a contemplative, if ultimately slight, experience. ANN HORNADAY (T WP)

ACT OF VALOR (R, 105 minutes) Military reality and video-game fantasy shake hands and come out fighting in this action flick that stars actual Navy SEALs. The exercises are genuine, and so is the hardware. But the script undermines the sense of authenticity at every turn. The stiffness of the Navy men’s performances is less of a problem than the global-conspiracy plot that’s about to commence. In Costa Rica, a CIA agent is posing as a doctor while observing an international drug and arms smuggler. Her cover is blown, and she’s captured and tortured. Soon, the SEAL team arrives for the rescue. Like most recent action movies, “Act of Valor” is fast, loud and strenuously over-edited. The filmmakers successfully conjure a chaotic, you-are-there sensation. Exactly what’s happening, however, can be hard to follow. though eloquent fable has morphed into something unwieldy and manic. It’s simultaneously silly and preachy, and with precious room for little fun. “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax” is a movie that progressives can feel good about taking their kids to, without actually having a good time. M.O. GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE (PG-13, 95 minutes) A goofy, gonzo thrill ride of a sequel, “Vengeance” is a bad movie that’s almost a great bad movie. It’s still a profoundly silly mash-up of comic book and quasi-religious “prophecy” about a motorcyclist who sold his soul to the devil and who transforms into a flaming avenger hurtling out of hell when the need arises. But this time around, Nicolas Cage and everybody else on board are in on the joke. ( A P) GOOD DEEDS (PG-13, 111 minutes) “Good Deeds” has a few good scenes and a few solid messages about the importance of being needed in a relationship or marriage and the financial tightrope a lot of families are walking in this economy. But Tyler Perry’s such a dull dramatist and boring actor that the message isn’t delivered. Perry stars as Wesley Deeds, a San Francisco CEO who is marrying a stunning, shallow go-getter real estate agent, Natalie. Then Wesley stumbles into Lindsay, a struggling single mom. The script packs in tidbits about Wesley’s noble breeding and noble dream and plugs for everything from social welfare services and company-run day-care centers to minority contract set-asides. The result is an overlong, flat movie in which Perry hits

his “women as victims” theme a bit more lightly, but which lacks an edge and does nothing to keep us from guessing the ending, pretty much based on the title. (AP) GONE (PG-13, 94 minutes) Amanda Seyfried is a manic, paranoid survivor of a serial killer in “Gone.” She’s sure that her sister has been kidnapped by the same guy, and that she has only until sunset before Molly is killed. And not for one second do you believe Seyfried is frightened for that sister. There’s nothing in the film or her eyes or physical demeanor that suggests panic, fear or desperation. Jill should be desperate. She was abducted a year ago and escaped. No one believed her. The Portland cops are tired of her routine. They won’t look for her sister. Every man she meets is a threat. Could the “kidnapper” be the creepy locksmith, the creepy customer in her diner, the creepy janitor, the creepy cop? But the movie fails to do much with that mystery. That makes for a thriller that feels sedate and slow, and a big payoff that feels like a cheat. (AP) THE GREY (R, 117 MINUTES) Within its first several minutes, Joe Carnahan’s man-against-nature thriller takes on contours and shadings far more sophisticated than the usual pulp programmer. Liam Neeson plays John Ottway, a sharpshooter who works for an oil company in Alaska keeping gray wolves and other predators at bay. Soon Ottway and his fellow he-men are on a plane bound for civilization. The plane won’t make it, leaving Ottway and six others marooned in the middle of a blank, icy wasteland with

found footage usually do so to cloak a flimsy premise. That’s not the issue with “Chronicle,” in which a pretty good idea for a sci-fi thriller is undermined by hastiness. The amateur cameraman is Andrew, a Seattle-area high-schooler who is bullied. Andrew’s closest thing to a friend is his cousin Matt. One night, the two attend a rave, where they encounter Matt’s longtime crush, later to serve as the movie’s damsel in distress. The guys wander off with Matt’s pal Steve. In a development any superhero-origin buff will recognize, the boys crawl into a sinkhole and find a weird substance that alters them. They develop superpowers, and Andrew, the weakest of the three, becomes the strongest. Ultimately, “Chronicle” can’t finesse the essential problem of the found-footage genre: When faced with a potentially lethal threat, nobody’s first instinct is to hit “record.” M.J. DR. SEUSS’ THE LORAX (PG, 86 minutes) Like “An Inconvenient Truth” for the 12-and-under crowd, “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax” is a cautionary environmental tale with a thin veneer of entertainment on top. Based on Seuss’ 1971 picture book, this musical adaptation, in eye-popping 3-D

[dj[hjW_dc[dj beeaekj subzero winds, punishing snowstorms and packs of hungry wolves. Such pure, elemental motivations and obstacles could easily provide the makings of a brutish but viscerally effective B movie, but Carnahan aspires to something more, and he largely achieves it. A.H. JOHN CARTER (PG-13, 137 minutes) Based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ stories, this adaptation gets off to such an incoherent start that it takes almost the entire, interminable running time to catch up. And the trip isn’t worth it: Narratively stilted, visually ugly and imaginatively bankrupt, “John Carter” just sits there forcing the audience to sit right along with it. But, OK, if it’s a synopsis you want: “John Carter” is nominally about a Civil War veteran who happens upon a dingus that transports him to Mars where he can jump really high and is taken prisoner and meets a beautiful princess. What’s supposed to be a fanciful journey in time and space is unforgivably awful-looking. A.H. JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND (PG, 94 minutes) Managing to make classic 19th-century adventure yarns feel as wondrous and exotic as a Hallmark Channel special, “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, sincerely tries to pay homage to the likes of Jules Verne and Robert Louis Stevenson but is too contaminated by today’s tame sensibilities to make it fly. JOHN DEFORE PROJECT X (R, 88 minutes) There are only two good jokes in “Project X,” a thin, painfully overlong comedy about
an out-of-control party thrown by a trio of high-school losers. One is the “story by” credit given to Michael Bacall. This is funny because there is, almost literally, no story. As for that second joke, it comes halfway into the movie when an adult neighbor attempts to shut down the party and ends up getting Tasered by a 12-year-old who has been hired as a bouncer. That’s not the funny part — or, for anyone older than 21, the only truly satisfying moment in the film. That comes when the man gets up and clocks the snot-nosed brat in the face. M . O . RAMPART (R, 107 minutes) Dave Brown (Woody Harrelson) is a bitter, tiresomely self-destructive Johnny One-Note, so busy wallowing in his own racism, misogyny and substance abuse that he can barely make time for his equally passionate commitment to self-pity. That “Rampart” is watchable at all is due to Harrelson. Director Oren Moverman and co-screenwriter James Ellroy throw in lots of colorful supporting characters and provocative plot twists and turns, but “Rampart” doesn’t tell a coherent story as much as swirl the drain with Dave, as his increasingly desperate efforts to save himself simply result in a cascade of self-inflicted wounds. A.H. SAFE HOUSE (R, 115 minutes) Denzel Washington has begun to carve out a niche as the grumpy or morally compromised foil to young, gravitas-seeking white actors. His charisma menaced Ethan Hawke in “Training Day” and taunted Chris Pine in “Unstoppable,” al-
lowing both actors to look more impressive simply by surviving the encounter. Entering “Safe House,” Ryan Reynolds needs that chance to prove himself. Reynolds plays Matt Weston, a CIA newbie assigned to man a rarely used Cape Town facility. Every day he clocks in, checks the supplies and waits to see whether he’ll finally get something to do. And then he does: Amid much excitement, a
squad of tough agents arrives to interrogate Washington’s Tobin Frost, a top spy who went rogue nine years ago and has been selling America’s secrets ever since. When the safe house is attacked by baddies bent on killing Frost, Weston escapes with him. In the field, Frost does get precious moments to play with Weston’s head, but the film doesn’t allow Reynolds enough time to move through wide-eyed
self-doubt to find the intelligence his character presumably possesses. A.H. SILENT HOUSE (R, 88 minutes) Likely to disappoint fans of old-school bogeymen as well as aficionados of jokily selfreferential meta-horror, “Silent House” might just find an audience that is able to appreciate it for what it is: a scary, yet thoughtful, art-house frightfest. you jump, to be sure, and your heart will beat a little bit faster. But what’s truly scariest about the movie takes place not in the body, but in the mind. M .O. THE SECRET WORLD OF ARRIETTY (G, 95 minutes) This gorgeous little movie is sure to be beloved by your little people, who may discover what it means to find a magical beauty in the things we can’t altogether see. “Arrietty,” based on Mary Norton’s children’s book series “The Borrowers,” is the story of tiny people who live under floorboards and swipe what they need from the Beans (what they call humans) upstairs. Arrietty is a 14-year-old Borrower who shows us from the first scene that she has pluck. She’s eager to go along with her father on a nighttime expedition into the Beans’ house to fetch a sugar cube and one tissue. Arrietty goes with her dad and is spotted by a sickly boy who tries to befriend her. She’s sure he means no harm, but once Borrowers have been seen, they must leave their home and find a new one. The end isn’t quite tied up in perfect sparkly pink bows, but is left slightly up to us and our atrophied imaginations. AMY JOYCE THIS MEANS WAR (PG-13, 96 minutes) This romantic action comedy stars Reese Witherspoon as a woman trying to choose between two handsome suitors. But as this sloppy, scattered, utterly synthetic piece of Hollywood widgetry unspools, it becomes increasingly clear that the romantic tension at play exists mostly between the men in question, played by Chris Pine and Tom Hardy. This is a problem not only at work, but also at home, where Jack’s wife has picked exactly this moment to insist that her husband communicate better. More bland than bad, “A Thousand Words” does have a few nice moments. Sure, there are cheap sex gags and broad slapstick routines, but the movie seems sincere about its self-help-book moral. Sincere, yet too conventional to experience its own spiritual breakthrough. M.J. TIM AND ERIC’S BILLION DOLLAR MOVIE (R, 91 minutes) It goes without saying that “Tim and Eric’s Billion Dollar Movie” — a moderately funny feature based on the cult cable-TV sketch comedy show “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!” — didn’t cost much to make. At times, the movie has the look and feel of the cheaply made late-night commercials that it mercilessly mocks. Writer-director-producer-stars Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim don’t really do “jokes” so much as they specialize in a brand of postmodern comedy that wrings laughter out of moments of awkwardness and ineptitude. Heidecker and Wareheim, playing fictionalized versions of themselves as first-time filmmakers, are screening their new movie for its mobster producer. Irish people love a capella music, mainly because it means they can stop banging on that drum and tooting that infernal “Titanic-“ sounding flute for a second. That’s why Strathmore is celebrating St. Paddy’s day early with a concert featuring local instrumental-less groups Vox Populi and Euphonism. Bet you money they sing “Danny Boy” at least once. Music Center at Strathmore, 5301 Tuckerman Lane, Bethesda; Fri., $9-$12; 301-5815100, Strathmore.org. (Grosvenor)

All That Jazz
We’ve all had a game of Pictionary get out of hand. I mean, HOW can you NOT SEE that that’s a horse?? But the folks behind Super Art Fight take it up a notch. Artists get a starting topic, supplies and a blank canvas — and 30 minutes to garner the most audience applause. The random topic-generation Wheel of Death can turn a match at any time, so keep your eyes on the action. Ottobar, 2549 N. Howard St., Baltimore; Fri., 8 p.m., $15; 410662-0069.
Howard grad Zurin Villanueva won a region-wide search to play Yolanda in Arena Stage’s 2009 production “Crowns” and has been shaking it as Josephine Baker in “Josephine Tonight.” The show closes this Sunday — so you don’t have much time to see the story of the woman who became the toast of Paris during the 1920s. MetroStage, 1201 N. Royal St., Alexandria; through Mar. 18, $25-$50; 703-548-6044, Metrostage.org.

You know the drill: years in the making against extreme conditions, co-produced with those relentlessly determined British film crews who continue to press the limits of what a nature film can do to the mind. It joins “Planet Earth” and “Life” to reign as a triumvirate in Best Buy showrooms. The series travels to polar regions in the north and south. Against the Law “Fairly Legal” (Fri., 9 p.m., USA) enters its second season. Brash and sassy Kate Reed (Sarah Shahi, above) has the unenviable task of starring as a lawyer who hates lawyers and legal bureaucracy, and who sets her sights on making legal mediation sexy. Unlike USA’s “Psych” and “Monk,” which also got their starts on Fridays, this show tries way too hard. (UNIVERSAL UCLICK)

to have a problem with the Nationals’ 19-year-old after GQ Magazine published a story about Harper on Thursday.
“[Jermaine] Jones’ ejection was swift, decisive and entirely in keeping with ‘Idol’ precedent. Also, in keeping with ‘Idol’ precedent was the fact that it was handled in just about the least dignified manner possible.” — MARCH HIRSH AT NPR.ORG/ BLOGSMONKEYSEE thought “American Idol” handled things poorly by dismissing on-camera a contestant who had outstanding criminal warrants, instead of handling it as an internal matter.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Quality control may be something of a problem today, and you’ll find yourself the lone voice of reason. ARIES (March 21-April 19) Efficiency is an issue today. Do what you can to condense your efforts and the clock will prove an ally, and not an enemy. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You may find yourself faced with a situation that requires you to pull from your bag of tricks something you haven’t used in quite some time. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Influences working on you at this time may prove stronger than expected, and you’ll have trouble moving in a straight line throughout the day. CANCER (June 21-July 22) You can prove your readiness to one who calls the shots. When the time comes, set things in motion exactly as instructed.

Yesterday’s Solution
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You may be waiting for an official word today before starting out in a new direction. The unexpected delay may give you pause. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You may be looking for a safe haven at this time, but before you let your guard down, you must settle an issue that has plagued you for some time. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Take care that your confidence is not interpreted by others in a way that paints you in the wrong light. Avoid posturing.
<EKH H79A JEJ7B Make a 2-7 letter word from the letters in each row. Add points of each word using scoring directions at right. 7-letter words get a 50-point bonus. Blank tiles used as any letter have no point value. Scrabble is a trademark of Hasbro in the U.S. and Canada.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

OekÊl[ 8[[d MWhd[Z Jennifer Lawrence, star of “The Hunger Games,” told Parade magazine why America is well on its way to enjoying televised games in which children must kill each other. “I was watching the Kardashian girl getting divorced, and that’s a tragedy for anyone,” Lawrence said. “But they’re using it for entertainment, and we’re watching it. The books hold up a terrible kind of mirror: This is what our society could be like if we became desensitized to trauma and to each other’s pain.” (E XPRESS)
