Will Harper say goodbye? D.C. SPORTS Nick Foles wrote a heartfelt letter in the Players’ Tribune to thank “Eagles fans everywhere” when the Super Bowl-winning quarterback’s new contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars became official on Wednesday. Antonio Brown paid for “Thank You Pittsburgh” billboards around the city he called home for the past nine years on the same day the wide receiver was introduced by the Oakland Raiders. It’s become customary for outgoing athletes to thank their former organizations and fan bases with a social media post — or by more elaborate means. So it’s noticeable when they don’t. Take Bryce Harper, for instance, whose social media silence about Washington since signing with the Philadelphia Phillies on Feb. 28 hasn’t been lost on some local media members and Nationals fans. “I understand he didn’t get the contract that he wanted from the Nationals,” NBC Sports Washington’s Michael Jenkins said.

Some Nats fans await a formal farewell from the Philly-bound fave

Harper acknowledges the crowd after his final home game in a Nats uniform.

“Good for him for getting the most money he could get. And you know what? I don’t like that it’s Philly ... but I get it. However, you could show a little bit of appreciation and at least thank the fans. A simple thank you, it would take 10 seconds on Twitter. ... He hasn’t done any of that. Seven years, fans supported him, bought his jerseys, bought tickets, he hasn’t said a thing.” Jenkins isn’t the only one who has commented on Harper amid the backdrop of NFL free agency

“Seven years, fans supported him, bought his jerseys, bought tickets, he hasn’t said a thing.” MICHAEL JENKINS, of NBC Sports Washington, calling on Bryce Harper to give Nationals fans a proper thank-you for their support. Harper signed a 13-year, $330 million contract with Philadelphia.

farewells. “Nick Foles says goodbye to Eagles fans,” Washington Times columnist Thom Loverro tweeted last Wednesday. “Maybe Bryce Harper will finally hold that BryceFest to say goodbye that Scott Boras promised Nationals fans stiffed by Bryce at Nats FanFest in 2015.” “Zach Brown way classier on his way out of D.C. than Bryce Harper,” NBC Sports Washington Redskins reporter JP Finlay tweeted after Brown, the former linebacker, thanked fans for showing him “mad love” in a 20word Instagram post following his release on Thursday. To be fair, Harper did sort of say goodbye with an Instagram post six months ago. After playing in his final home game with the Nationals — and turning down Washington’s 10-year, $300 million contract offer — Harper posted a nine-photo grid on Instagram with a simple message: “To the fans and the city of DC, thank you!” Harper has already referred to his new Phamily and described Philadelphia as the “greatest city in the world.” It might be time to hit that unfollow button. Supreme Court to hear Va. redistricting lawsuit

THE DISTRICT

verbatim

“I’m looking forward to the deployment. I’m a little nervous, but I know my family is in good hands.”

Case could help shape balance of power in the legislature for years

WILLIAM C. SMITH JR.,

MANUEL BALCE CENETA (AP)

VIRGINIA The U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments today in a redistricting case that could help determine the balance of power in Virginia’s legislature for years to come. A panel of lower court judges ruled last year that 11 Virginia House of Delegates districts were racially gerrymandered and ordered a new political map to correct them. House Republicans appealed that finding and will argue against the new map before the high court. All 140 seats in the legislature are on the ballot this fall, and the GOP holds two-seat majorities in both the House — 51-49 — and Senate, 21-19. Democrats have been hoping that a wave of success in recent Virginia elections will propel them to take control of the legislature for the first time since 1995. The party that controls the General Assembly in 2021 will oversee the next statewide redistricting effort, following next year’s U.S. Census — potentially cementing an advantage in future elections. However, Democrats’ momentum has been slowed by recent scandals involving the state’s three top elected officials, all Democrats. Gov. Ralph Northam and Attorney General Mark R. Herring have both admitted

racist incidents from their pasts, and Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax has denied two separate allegations of sexual assault. A redistricting map approved earlier this year by judges in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia to correct the racial gerrymandering appears to favor Democrats. It realigns a total of 26 House districts as it remedies the 11 under court order; six Republican delegates would find themselves in districts with a majority of Democratic voters, according to an analysis by the nonpartisan Virginia Public Access Project. House Republicans point out that the current political

boundaries won bipartisan approval in 2011. House Speaker Kirk Cox, RColonial Heights, whose home district is among those that would swing toward Democrats under the new map, is spearheading the appeal. The original case was brought by voters represented by the Democratic lawyer Marc E. Elias, who has filed such challenges around the country. “It’s very much unfortunate that a national group funded by unknown liberal donors has taken a systematic approach to attacking redistricting around the country,” said Cox’s chief of staff, Matthew Moran. Amazon incentives OK’d amid protests ARLINGTON COUNTY The Arlington County Board unanimously approved a $23 million incentives package for Amazon to build a headquarters facility in Crystal City at a raucous meeting Saturday repeatedly disrupted by protesters who shouted “shame.”

The 5-0 vote was the final action granting local and state subsidies to the online retail giant as part of its much-publicized plan to create at least 25,000 jobs over 12 years. The vote came at the end of six hours of testimony and debate in which supporters touted the project’s economic benefits while opponents warned that the influx of highly paid workers would raise housing prices and displace lower-income residents. “It’s the most cost-effective

April delivers fifth calf as 300K watch

Much of Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, Neb., has been inundated with floodwaters that have breached levees.

In Midwest, evacuations spread with floodwaters Heavy rains, snowmelt combine to push rivers over banks and levees ST. LOUIS, MO. Residents in parts of southwestern Iowa were forced out of their homes Sunday as a torrent of Missouri River water flowed over and through levees. Heavy rainfall and snowmelt have led to dangerously high water in creeks and rivers across several Midwestern states, with the Missouri River hitting record-high levels in many areas. At least two deaths were blamed on flooding, and two other men have been missing for days. While river depths were starting

to level off in Nebraska on Sunday, downstream communities in Kansas and Missouri were bracing for likely flooding. In Iowa, the Missouri River reached 30.2 feet Sunday in Fremont County in the state’s far southwestern corner, 2 feet above the record set in 2011. People in the towns of Bartlett and Thurman were being evacuated as levees were breached and overtopped. Thurman has about 200 residents. About 50 people live in Bartlett. County Emergency Management Director Mike Crecelius said it wasn’t just the amount of the water, it was the swiftness of the current that created a danger. “It’s flowing fast and it’s open

country — there’s nothing there to slow it down,” he said. In Nebraska, the Missouri River flooded Offutt Air Force Base, with about one-third of it underwater on Sunday. Spokeswoman Tech. Sgt. Rachelle Blake told the Omaha World-Herald that 60 buildings have been damaged, including about 30 completely inundated with as much as 8 feet of water. Hundreds of people remained out of their homes in Nebraska, but rivers there were starting to recede. The National Weather Service said the Elkhorn River remained at major flood stage but was expected to dip back below flood stage by Tuesday.

More than 300,000 watched live as April gave birth to a healthy male calf at around 12:45 p.m., the Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, N.Y., said. Park officials said the newborn giraffe was on its feet by 1:27 p.m. and nursing by 1:51 p.m. This is April’s fifth calf and the second for her and partner Oliver. A naming contest for the new calf will be held soon. Fans will be able to see the little one in person when the park reopens for the season on May 1. (AP)

The EPA cited “the acute fatalities that have resulted from exposure to the chemical” and an “unreasonable” risk to consumers. Flash floods and mudslides triggered by days of torrential downpours tore through mountainside villages in Indonesia’s easternmost province, killing at least 58 people and leaving thousands homeless, disaster officials said Sunday. Rescuers recovered more bodies as floodwaters and landslides destroyed roads and bridges in several areas of Papua province’s Jayapura district, hampering rescue efforts, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman. The dead included three children who drowned after the floods began just after midnight Saturday. (AP)

Serbia’s president pledged Sunday to defend the country’s law and order a day after opposition supporters stormed the national TV station, protesting what they called his autocratic rule and biased grip on the country’s media. The opposition clashes with police on Saturday and Sunday in Belgrade were the first major incidents after months of peaceful protests against populist President Aleksandar Vucic. The demonstrators are demanding his resignation, fair elections and a free media. As Vucic held a news conference Sunday, thousands gathered at the presidency building, trapping him there for hours. Fox News host Jeanine Pirro was absent from her usual slot in the network’s Saturday night prime-time lineup — and President Trump was not happy about it. Fox News bumped the show a week after it condemned Pirro’s on-air suggestion that Rep. Trump accused Pirro’s critics of waging “all out campaigns” against Pirro and fellow Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who was rebuked after racist and misogynistic comments resurfaced last week. Grieving nation calls for change

At sanctuaries, a new sense of vulnerability

NEW ZEALAND New Zealanders came together across the country on Sunday to mourn the victims of Friday’s mosque shootings — and become part of a global debate over the role of guns and intolerance. While Muslim leaders prayed for peace and togetherness, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern earlier in the day spoke forcefully about guns. “There will be changes to our guns laws,” Ardern said. “We will be discussing more detailed policy elements at Cabinet tomorrow.” Leaders are considering a total ban on semiautomatic weapons like the one avowed neo-Nazi Brenton Harrison Tarrant, a 28-year-old Australian, is alleged to have used to kill 50 people in attacks on two mosques in the city of Christchurch. As of Sunday, 34 other people were in Christchurch Hospital, with 12 in critical condition in intensive care. A 4-year-old girl was moved to a dedicated children’s hospital in Auckland, where she was also in critical condition. Besides the debate on gun control, New Zealanders considered a call to open doors to more refugees, and even whether an enormously successful rugby team should change its name from the Canterbury Crusaders because of the overtones of religious intolerance.

In the United States, the shooting of Muslim worshipers by the alleged white supremacist underscored the deep partisan divide over President Trump’s rhetoric on immigrants and whether his words serve as incitement for extremist violence. Mick Mulvaney, the acting White House chief of staff, said it was “absurd” to draw a connection between Trump’s statements about immigration and the admitted shooter’s own words on the subject, which were spelled out in a lengthy manifesto that referred to immigrants as “invaders within our lands” and called Trump “a symbol of renewed white identity and common purpose.” Speaking on “Fox News Sunday,” Mulvaney said, “I don’t think it’s fair to cast this person as a supporter of Donald Trump any more than it is to look at his eco-terrorist passages in that manifesto and align him with [House Speaker] Nancy Pelosi or [Rep. Alexandria] Ocasio-Cortez.” Tarrant described himself as an “ethno-nationalist eco-fascist” in his discursive statement. On Friday, Trump offered condolences and said that he does not believe white nationalism is a growing global danger and that the suspect belongs to “a small group of people that have very, very serious problems.” Police in Christchurch have said that all the evidence points

RELIGION Houses of worship have traditionally been places of refuge where strangers are welcome. But high-profile attacks in recent years on an African-American church in Charleston, S.C., a synagogue in Pittsburgh and now mosques in New Zealand have made many worshippers and their prayer leaders rethink how protected sanctuaries really are. “People are fearful for their lives, for their houses of worship, for the sanctuary of this mosque and other places of worship … that are being attacked,” said Imam Mohannad Hakeem while attending Friday prayers at the Islamic Center of Detroit. For many, houses of worship are sanctuaries where congregants bond with their shared sense of faith and community. The recent attacks have made some question whether these places have turned into soft targets, losing their sense of sacredness. In Chicago, the Muslim Community Center and the Downtown Islamic Center increased security on Friday. Dana Al-Qadi, 29, an engineer, said visiting after the attacks brings her a feeling of peace mixed with fear: “People are their most vulnerable when they’re at the masjid [mosque]. … In that moment, someone decided to be such a transgressor. That brings me so much sadness.” MIKE HOUSEHOLDER, REBECCA SANTANA AND KELLI KENNEDY (AP)

‘I’ve lost my little boy’ Families mourn dead as officials work to formally identify 50 Christchurch victims

Yasmin Ali told New Zealand’s 1 News that she lost a close family friend and now fears she could be targeted just for wearing her headscarf in public. “Family friends that we’ve known for 19 years — dead. People who were there for my engagement — dead,” Ali told the news outlet. “You don’t think something like this can happen in New Zealand, in Christchurch, of all places.” Mucad Ibrahim was 3 years old, the youngest of the victims. He was born in New Zealand to a Somali family who had fled fighting in their home country more than 20 years ago. His shoes were still at the entrance, where he had left them when he arrived for Friday prayers with his father and older brother, The Post reported. Mucad was “energetic, playful and liked to smile and laugh a lot,” his teenage brother, Abdi, wrote on Facebook. “Will miss you dearly brother.” SIOBHAN O’GRADY AND

MEDIA Facebook said it removed 1.5 million videos of footage from the shooting rampage at two mosques in Christchurch within 24 hours of the attack, underscoring the massive game of whack-a-mole social media giants have to play with even the most high-profile problematic content on their platforms. In a statement, Mia Garlick, a spokeswoman for Facebook New Zealand, said the company continues to “work around the clock to remove violating content from our site, using a combination of technology and people.” Of the 1.5 million videos of the massacre, filmed by a bodyworn camera on the perpetrator almost in the style of a video game, 1.2 million were blocked at upload. When the horror began Friday, alleged shooter Brenton Harrison Tarrant’s Facebook followers were the first to know. He livestreamed his assault, from the time he started driving over to Al Noor Mosque through his firing of multiple rounds at the mosque. Many hours later, and long after he and other suspects had been arrested, others were still uploading the video to YouTube and other online video platforms. A Washington Post search of keywords related to the event, such as “New Zealand,” surfaced a long list of videos, many of which were lengthy and uncensored views of the massacre. SHIBANI

NEW ZEALAND Forty years ago, Haji Daoud Nabi fled war in his native Afghanistan and resettled his family in New Zealand. In his new home, he would come to run an Afghan Association, welcoming other refugees and attending Al Noor Mosque in Christchurch, where he usually sat in the front row, his son told reporters. But on Friday, Nabi, 71, was late, so he took a seat in the back — placing him on the front lines of New Zealand’s deadliest mass shooting in recent history. When a gunman stormed the mosque just before evening prayers began, Nabi reportedly shielded a family friend from the gunfire, his son said. The friend survived; Nabi did not. At least 50 people were killed Friday in a rampage at two mosques in Christchurch, on New Zealand’s South Island. Officials have yet to release the 50 victims’ names, but friends and family members have slowly begun to identify loved ones who perished. The Red Cross New Zealand is maintaining a list of names online of those who have not yet been accounted for. The list is color-coded: orange for “missing” and green for “I am alive.” In the absence of information from officials, some have learned of their loved ones’ deaths from those who witnessed the massacre or its aftermath. Others, like Haji Daoud Nabi’s family, confirmed that their relatives or friends were dead by watching the live-streamed video of the massacre. Several students from the local high school had been excused from class to attend Friday prayers, school officials said in a statement. One boy, 14-year-old

He received a phone call Friday morning from his

brother-in-law Adan Ibrahin Dirie, who was in the hospital with gunshot wounds. Dirie had been worshiping in Christchurch that morning with his five children when the gunman opened fire. The youngest, Abdullahi, was killed. Pakistan’s foreign minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, said the confirmed Pakistani dead include 48-year-old Naeem Rashid and his 21-year-old son, Talha Naeem, The Associated Press reported.

Doomed Max 8 jetliners encountered parallel issues, data show ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA Preliminary information from the flight data recorder of an Ethiopian Airlines plane that crashed a week ago and killed 157 people shows “clear similarities” with an earlier disaster involving the same kind of Boeing aircraft in Indonesia, Ethiopia’s

transport minister said Sunday. The disclosure came as thousands marched in the capital of Addis Ababa, accompanying 17 empty caskets at a funeral for the Ethiopian victims of Flight 302. The caskets were empty because authorities have said that recovering and identifying the remains will take months. The service came one day after officials began delivering bags of scorched earth from the crash site to family members of the

from the flight data recorder has indicated “clear similarities” between both crashes, Transport Minister Dagmawit Moges told reporters. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration already has said satellite-based tracking data showed that the movements of Flight 302 were similar to those of Lion Air Flight 610, which crashed off Indonesia, killing 189 people. Both planes flew with erratic altitude changes that could indicate the pilots struggled to control them. Shortly after their takeoffs, both crews tried to return to the airports but crashed. Suspicions emerged that faulty sensors and software may have contributed to the crashes. ELIAS MESERET (AP)

THREE POINTERS

Who got snubbed?

NCAA TOURNAMENT

Hop on the bandwagon

Belmont, Temple, Arizona and St. Johns were the last four teams into the field (pages 1213). All bubble teams are flawed, but these three that just missed out were the biggest snubs.

Here’s the outlook for the six NCAA tournament teams from Maryland and Virginia

JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

3 Alabama (18-15)

No. 1 Virginia

No. 4 Virginia Tech

No. 6 Maryland

East Region

NCAA Tournament history: The Cavaliers became the first No. 1 seed to lose to a No. 16 seed last year, falling to UMBC 74-54. The furthest Virginia has gone under coach Tony Bennett is the Elite Eight in 2016.

NCAA Tournament history: The Hokies were a No. 8 seed and lost 86-83 to No. 9 Alabama in the first round last year. Virginia Tech hasn’t won an NCAA Tournament game since 2007 and last made the Sweet 16 in 1967.

NCAA Tournament history: The Terps missed the Big Dance last season. In 2017, they were a No. 6 seed and were ousted in the first round by No. 11 Xavier. Maryland has made one Sweet 16 (2016) under coach Mark Turgeon.

Key to making a run: What’s different with this Cavaliers’ team compared with last year’s squad? De’Andre Hunter, who was injured at the end of last season. The sophomore was named the ACC defensive player of the year and is an extremely efficient scorer.

Key to making a run: The Hokies have the 12th-ranked scoring defense (62.0 points allowed) and a dangerous inside-outside duo with guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker and forward Kerry Blackshear Jr. Plus, guard Justin Robinson is set to return after missing 12 games.

Key to making a run: With 6-foot-10 sophomore Bruno Fernando, who had 20 double-doubles this season, and 6-foot-10 freshman Jalen Smith, few teams can compete with the Terps in the post. Maryland is sixth in the NCAA in rebounding margin (plus-8.8).

The Tide had nonconference wins over Murray State and Liberty, which both won their conference tournaments, and a big home win over Kentucky.

2 TCU (20-13) The Horned Frogs were in the top 25 after starting the season 12-1 but finished 7-11 in the Big 12. Their best wins were against Iowa State, which TCU beat twice.

NCAA Tournament history: Since making a Final Four run in 2011, the Rams haven’t made it past the first weekend. VCU missed the tournament last year and lost to No. 7 Saint Mary’s in its last appearance in 2017.

NCAA Tournament history: This is the fourth NCAA appearance for the Flames and the best seed in program history. Liberty has never won a tourney game and lost to North Carolina A&T in a First Four game in its last appearance in 2013.

NCAA tournament history: This is the Monarchs’ first appearance since 2011, when they lost to Butler in their first game. The last time ODU won a tournament game was 2010, and it has never made it to the Sweet 16.

Key to making a run: If Marcus Evans can play through a bone bruise in his left knee, the Rams can make another deep run like they did in 2011. The junior transfer, who followed coach Mike Rhoades from Rice to Richmond, scored at least 20 points in three of his last six games.

Key to making a run: The Atlantic Sun champs are deep and balanced, with six different players averaging more than seven points a game and no one playing more than 30 minutes a game. Junior Scottie James, who had nine doubledoubles this season, will have to come up big.

Key to making a run: The Conference USA champs beat Syracuse and won 15 of their last 18 games. ODU has something everyone covets in March: veteran leadership. Senior guards B.J. Stith and Ahmad Caver each average more than 16 points a game. JEFFREY TOMIK (EXPRESS)

Bracket breakdown: A road map through the madness

FIRST-ROUND UPSET ALERT A No. 9 UCF over No. 8 VCU: With 7-foot-6 Tacko Fall, who can dunk without jumping, and the one-two backcourt punch of B.J. Taylor and Aubrey Dawkins, the Knights are a fun team to watch. UCF has never won an NCAA Tournament game, but that drought is about to end.

SWEET 16 SLEEPER B No. 6 Maryland: The Terps have a favorable path with a potential second-round matchup against an LSU team in turmoil. Tigers coach Will Wade is suspended indefinitely as he faces allegations of being part of a pay-for-play scandal.

FINAL FOUR PICK

Duke’s Zion Williamson

C No. 1 Duke: The college hoops season revolved around Zion Williamson, and that won’t change now. The freshman’s knee looks just fine. He was a perfect 13-for-13 in a win over Syracuse — his first game back from injury — and scored 81 points in three ACC Tournament games.

West FIRST-ROUND UPSET ALERT D No. 12 Murray State over No. 5 Marquette: Ja Morant is eighth in the country in scoring (24.6 points a game) and first in assists (10.0 a game). The projected top-three pick in June’s NBA draft can take over games.

F No. 2 Michigan: The Wolverines beat Villanova, Purdue and North Carolina by a combined 63 points and have the third-best scoring defense in the NCAA (58.8 points allowed a game). Freshman Ignas Brazdeikis ended the regular season with three straight 20-point games.

South FIRST-ROUND UPSET ALERT G No. 11 Saint Mary’s over No. 6 Villanova: The Wildcats are the defending NCAA champs and won the Big East, but they are vulnerable — as shown in losses to Furman and Penn. Saint Mary’s defense completely shut down Gonzaga in the WCC title game.

SWEET 16 SLEEPER H No. 5 Wisconsin: The Badgers missed the tournament last year, but made it to the Sweet 16 the previous four seasons. Led by do-everything senior forward Ethan Happ, Wisconsin won six of its last eight games of the season.

FINAL FOUR PICK I No. 2 Tennessee: The Vols are balanced and experienced, with five upperclassmen averaging doubledigits in scoring. Junior forward Grant Williams, the SEC player of the year, is a matchup nightmare in the post; he averages 19.2 points and 7.5 rebounds a game.

Midwest FIRST-ROUND UPSET ALERT J No. 9 Washington over No. 8 Utah State: The Pac-12 was horrible this season, which minimized Washington’s regular-season title. But the Huskies are second in the country in blocks and have a top-30 scoring defense.

Taylor to miss ‘significant’ time with knee, hip injury

Manziel will join Memphis in the new Alliance league

McIlroy emerges to win The Players Championship

Michael A. Taylor sprained his left knee and left hip, an MRI revealed Friday, and Nationals manager Dave Martinez said he expects the outfielder to “miss a significant amount of time.” Taylor, 27, exited Thursday’s spring training game against the Twins after making a diving catch in the second inning. He stayed in for one more hitter before leaving the game. Before the injury, Taylor was competing with Victor Robles to be the Nationals’ everyday center fielder. Taylor was hitting well, with a .360 batting average in 25 at-bats, and had debuted a new swing that cut his stride. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Johnny Manziel signed with the Alliance of American Football on Saturday night and will join the Memphis Express. The quarterback’s rights belonged to San Antonio of the spring league, but that team declined to sign him and Manziel then was free to join any of the other seven clubs. He was awarded through the AAF’s waiver system to the Express, who have a league-worst 1-5 record. The 2012 Heisman Trophy winner at Texas A&M had his contract with the CFL terminated this offseason. The Canadian league said he violated his agreement with it, but has offered no specifics. (AP)

Rory McIlroy made two late birdies amid the wild theatrics of Sunday at The Players Championship and closed with a 2-under 70 to win the next best thing to a major. It required a major performance down the scary stretch at the TPC Sawgrass. McIlroy could not afford to make a mistake over the final hour because of Jim Furyk, the 48-year-old former Ryder Cup captain who nearly pulled off a stunner. Furyk, one of the last players to get in the strongest field in golf, capped off a 67 with a shot into the 18th that plopped down 3 feet from the hole for a birdie. Eight players had at least a share of the lead in the final round. (AP)

ANALYSIS If anyone was watching, the Wizards won a game Saturday night and Bradley Beal was spectacular. It’s been difficult for the Wizards to attract much attention this year, at home and nationally. Still, Beal plays on as the candlelight flickering in the darkness, shining as an all-NBA candidate. “My very biased opinion, he’s all-NBA the way he’s playing,” coach Scott Brooks insisted Saturday. “He’s doing things that level of player does night in and night out. It’s not an every-othernight [thing], it’s not a two-outof-three nights. It’s every night he brings it.” Beal is updating his résumé almost every night with new feats that justify his belonging among the top 15 players in the league. On Friday, he scored 40 points, his fifth 40-point game of the year, tying Hornets guard Kemba Walker for most in the East. Then Saturday against the Grizzlies, he did it again, scoring 40 in a win. If he keeps up this pace, he will end the season as the youngest player (25 years, 286 days) since 2013-14 to average at least 25 points, five rebounds and five assists on at least 45 percent shooting in 36 or more minutes, per Elias Sports Bureau. Beal’s game is making a statement, but his candidacy for allNBA is being drowned out by his team’s performance. Team success can be a deciding factor when it comes to individual awards. Although Beal’s impact should be undeniable — as of Saturday night, the Wizards averaged 10.4 more

points per 100 possessions when he is on the floor — he’s not an actual wizard who can make that 30-40 record disappear. In 2016-17, voters rewarded the otherworldly efforts of Anthony Davis despite his misfortune of playing for a losing team. That season, Davis averaged 28 points and 11.8 rebounds for a Pelicans team that went 34-48. He was named first-team all-NBA. Now Beal is having a similar season. With his back-to-back

games of at least 40 points, five rebounds and five assists on consecutive nights, Beal joined Davis (Nov. 16-17, 2018) as the only players to do so this season. Also, Beal became the first player in Washington NBA franchise history to reach this mark. He’s not only mirroring Davis. Pick any of Beal’s numbers during this career season and compare them with some of the game’s elite players. Only Beal and Houston’s reigning MVP James Harden have made at least 175 3-pointers with more than 350 rebounds and 350 assists. Also, Beal and Milwaukee’s MVP candidate Giannis Antetokounmpo are the only players in the East to boast that 25/5/5 line and 45 percent shooting to go with a steal per game. “I’m tired of seeing Washington and Beal,” Hornets coach James Borrego said. “So good luck to the rest of the NBA. Good luck trying to figure him out.”

screens New streaming shows ‘Turn Up Charlie,’ ‘Shrill’ try too hard to be cool

TV REVIEW As streaming networks race to overwhelm us with content, viewers wind up watching a lot of shows that are passably cool, possibly intriguing and still not quite ready for prime time. Hulu’s “Shrill” and Netflix’s “Turn Up Charlie,” both of which arrived Friday, are the latest examples, made with everything their creators scientifically know about hit streaming TV shows at this particular moment, down to the requisite awkwardness, quirkiness and curated song choices. “Shrill” stars “Saturday Night Live’s” Aidy Bryant as Annie, a Portland woman who writes calendar listings for the hip alternative newspaper and yearns to break free from that which confines her: the snide boss (John Cameron Mitchell) who won’t let her write essays; the emotionally stunted lover (Luka Jones) who is embarrassed to be seen with

her; the mother (Julia Sweeney) whose feelings of concern also entail a lifetime of undermining remarks about weight gain. At a mere six episodes, “Shrill” lacks the space and depth to figure out what kind of show it wants be, which means watching as it checks off a laundry list of current concerns, which, besides fat-shaming, include dating rituals, sexism, workplace etiquette and basic rights. This particular genre of dramedy can be reduced to a simple phrase: “Welcome to my world.” It involves more portraiture than plot, absorbing us in what is felt in everyday encounters. “Shrill” falls into a great, oatmeal-filled valley of dramedies; it’s neither better nor worse than much of its ilk and it’s rescued from oblivion by Bryant’s talent. Less can be said for “Turn Up Charlie,” a clunky, eight-episode British dramedy that stars Idris Elba (“The Wire,” “Luther”) as a past-his-prime London musician who frittered away his one-hitwonder success and now subsists on low-paying DJ gigs.

HULU

9 p.m. today on HBO

“Saturday Night Live’s” Aidy Bryant shines in “Shrill,” a slight Hulu dramedy that can’t decide what kind of show it actually wants to be.

Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney’s latest traces the dramatic rise and fall of self-made billionaire Elizabeth Holmes, whose medical tech startup Theranos had promised to revolutionize blood testing.

2 ‘The Fix’ 10 p.m. today on NBC

O.J. Simpson prosecutor Marcia Clark is behind this legal drama, which stars Robin Tunney as a district attorney who lost a murder trial featuring a celebrity suspect — and is drawn back into the case eight years later.

MONDAY | 03.18.2019 | EXPRESS | 19

In Netflix’s “Turn Up Charlie,” Idris Elba plays a washed-up British DJ who finds gainful employment as the manny for his friend’s tween daughter.

Charlie’s boyhood friend David (JJ Feild) has come back to England as a well-known star of American action movies, accompanied by his music-producer/DJ wife, Sara (Piper Perabo), and their tweenage daughter, a hellion named Gabby (Frankie Hervey) who chases nannies away. Like in some movie that Dwayne Johnson already made, it falls to Charlie to try his luck as Gabby’s minder, while hoping Sara will help him restart his

music career. Early episodes lean on a tiresome series of mischievous mishaps with Gabby and missteps by the adults that fail as character-building charm offensives. Instead, the viewer quickly learns to despise the neglectful parents, the self-absorbed manny and the bratty kid all at once. “Turn Up Charlie” is such a disassembled example of a “Welcome to my world” show that it ought to come with its own Allen wrench.

‘The Act’ Wednesday on Hulu

This new true-crime anthology series’ first season focuses on Gypsy Blanchard (Joey King), a girl trying to escape the toxic relationship she has with her overprotective mother (Patricia Arquette). (EXPRESS)

James Gunn has been rehired as director of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.” Representatives for Disney and Gunn confirmed Friday that the writer-director will helm the Marvel franchise he’s guided from the start. Gunn was fired last July over tweets from nearly a decade ago in which he joked about pedophilia and rape. In a statement, he said he was excited to “continue making films that investigate the ties of love that bind us all.” (AP) Neil deGrasse Tyson will return to “StarTalk,” “Cosmos” after misconduct investigation

Remember when “Project Runway” was new, back in 2004, and a contestant made an edgy dress from corn husks? And mentor Tim Gunn uttered those immortal words, “Make it work”? It was a cultural phenomenon — and an extraordinary show. Over the years, “Runway” faded into a less interesting

show, especially after moving from Bravo to Lifetime in 2009. Now, Bravo has reclaimed it for Season 17 (8 p.m. Thursdays). Model Karlie Kloss fills ex-host Heidi Klum’s heels and former winner Christian Siriano assumes Gunn’s mantle. Kloss is charming, but it’s not compelling to hear her exclaim about “the power of fashion.” The stilted Siriano does not yet have a catchphrase. Candidates from last week’s premiere:

Good looks: Bravo makes ‘Project Runway’ work

“Project Runway” now features, from left, Brandon Maxwell, Karlie Kloss, Nina Garcia and Elaine Welteroth. Kloss hosts; the other three are judges.

“Time is not your friend” and “I’m so excited I could pee.” Yet this cycle is a joy because of the impressively diverse cast: a 51-year-old mother

of nine from Philadelphia, a Colombian fellow working as a housekeeper and a HaitianAmerican who’s had one of his coats worn by Cardi B.

In the first challenge, they rise to the task with humor, angst, meltdowns and strokes of genius. The judges are fun, too. Nina Garcia, the sole holdover, still has the best death stare of disapproval. Elaine Welteroth, the first AfricanAmerican editor of “Teen Vogue,” is full of enthusiasm. Designer Brandon Maxwell is hysterical. Looking at a model’s mesh purse, he says he can imagine her “sticking the bag in water and pulling it up with a lobster in it.” “Project Runway” may have been out, but now it’s back in.

“J.K., please respect Dumbledore’s and Grindelwald’s privacy.”

“We need to give this guy more eggs.”

@LAMOSTARDA, joking after the “Harry Potter” and “Fantastic Beasts” author revealed that there was an “intense” sexual side to the popular Hogwarts headmaster and dark wizard’s relationship. Rowling makes the admission on the “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” Blu-ray. She has a history of adding to “Harry Potter” lore with previously unknown details.

@DRAGNEELFAHAD, praising “Egg Boy” William Connolly,

who smashed an egg on Australian Sen. Fraser Anning’s head Saturday. Connolly’s action was a response to Anning implying Friday that immigration and “Muslim fanatics” were to blame for the Christchurch, New Zealand, mosque attacks that killed 50. In video of the incident, Anning turns around and punches Connolly twice before the 17-year-old is tackled. Connolly was praised for standing up to the rightwing senator. A petition calling for Anning’s removal from Parliament has gained over 1 million signatures.

“This is why I buy nothing but sweats, leggings and non-jean shorts. I hate jeans.” @JDIMINGO, replying to Twitter user

@chloemmx’s picture of seven size 12 jeans — which are all different widths. The tweet has gone viral, with many other women agreeing that jeans sizing is inconsistent, and some noting that the disparities can lead to body image issues. The tweets sparked calls for universal sizing across brands.

“NO OFFENSE BUT DOES ANYONE ELSE LIVE IN THIS BUILDING?” @JPBRAMMER, desperately tweeting

about the two dogs and a cat that escaped from their apartment and appeared at his door. The Twitter user spent most of his day with the animals, as the cat took over his apartment and the dogs proved capable of opening, closing and locking doors. The owners eventually returned and were reunited with their wandering pets.

Nick Bullen, who makes films about England’s royal family, told Fox News over the weekend that Prince Harry and Prince William are the ones feuding, not their wives, as has been rumored. “All brothers fall out,” Bullen said. “All families fall out. Their fallout at the moment is becoming public.” On Thursday, Kensington Palace said that Harry and William will be breaking up their joint offices at the palace. Harry and Meghan Markle will move their office to Buckingham Palace. William and Kate Middleton’s office will remain in Kensington Palace, where they live. (EXPRESS)
