A British centenarian was arrested and bundled into a police car after saying her “bucket list” wish was to be arrested, Sky News reported Thursday.

Anne Brokenbrow, 104, who lives at a care home in Bristol, said she’d “never been on the wrong side of the law.” When officers came to arrest her, Brokenbrow, who has dementia, didn’t remember her wish, but said it was a “lovely day.” “They put the handcuffs on, I had the lot,” she boasted. ‘That’s the DeMatha look’ FASHION Mike Jones sat in the back parking lot of DeMatha Catholic High and counted the students trickling out of the building wearing the NBA’s latest fashion trend.

“That’s one, two, three, four, five,” said Jones, the school’s basketball coach, ticking off the students wearing a hooded sweatshirt under a blazer.

LeBron James has taken to rocking the look. So has Russell Westbrook. And Stephen Curry.

And Kevin Durant. And Chris Paul. It’s part of high fashion now, drawing the attention of Instagram models and celebrities out on the town. And the allboys school in Hyattsville, Md., is happy to take at least partial credit for its origin.

“We joke and say, ‘That’s the DeMatha look,’ ” said Jones, who graduated from DeMatha in 1991 and said the hoodie-and-blazer look was in style at the school when he was a student. “We identify it as ours; this is where it started. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s other private schools

DeMatha has a strict dress code during colder months: shirt, tie, dress slacks, dress shoes and a crimson blazer on top. When it’s chilly, students are supposed to put on a formal sweater over their shirt and tie, but quite a few opt for a hoodie instead, letting the hood flap against the collar of their sport coats.

“We’re almost proud of it,” Jones said. “When LeBron and [Oladipo] and [Durant] and Westbrook and those guys started to do it, I think immediately, people started to say, ‘That’s the DeMatha look.’ ” Jerian Grant, an Orlando Magic guard and former DeMatha star, said he think’s its cool to see the look he was wearing in high school. Grant said he notices each time a new player around the league tries it out, but he doesn’t bother telling teammates they owe his high school a debt of thanks.

D.C. seeks to buy RFK site THE DISTRICT Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, the District’s non-voting member of Congress, is filing legislation that asks Congress to sell to the city one of the largest tracts of vacant land in the District: the 190-acre RFK stadium site.

Acquiring the land would give D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, D, and members of the D.C. Council the chance to address goals they largely agree on: the acute need to build new housing, recreation facilities and parks in place of the asphalt surrounding RFK. Sharp disagreements are likely to arise, however, over whether plans should also include an NFL stadium.

Redskins owner Daniel Snyder wants to relocate his team to the site. And Bowser, a thirdgeneration Washingtonian, has made it clear she wants to be the mayor to bring home the team that left the city in 1996.

But some D.C. Council leaders would aggressively oppose any public incentives sought by Snyder to build a new stadium on the site, while others would object to a stadium occupied only a few dozen days a year.

“Building a stadium for a billionaire is just a horrible waste of taxpayer dollars,” said Council member Charles Allen, D-Ward 6, whose ward is across the river from “oceans of concrete” that he said define the RFK site. “Build

And some members of Congress, which would have to approve a land sale, consider the Redskins team name offensive and bristle at the idea of allowing the team to build on federal property, although they may support an outright land sale in the name of giving the city control over its own affairs.

All sides agree something better could be done with a crumbling stadium, surrounded by vacant parking lots.

An eight-page draft of the legislation makes no reference to the Redskins or a new stadium.

“This bill isn’t about a stadium.

It’s about clearing title on the land,” Norton said. “This is the

largest piece of important land left in the District of Columbia that has not been put to good use.

I have made it my business to get all such land used.”

Bowser last summer endorsed a new Redskins stadium on RFK property, but remained neutral this week in her State of the District address when she announced Norton’s bill allowing the city to buy the land outright.

Given the District’s housing crisis, Bowser said the city could not let any untapped land go to waste, including the National Park Service-owned RFK site, which she called “nothing more than a vast and desolate parking lot” and “the only national park dedicated to asphalt.”

“To be clear, there is no deal to bring a professional sports team

to that site,” she said. “Whether a stadium or sports arena is included in the reimagined RFK Campus is a debate for a future date, which we as a city must decide for ourselves.”

In August, Bowser backed a new stadium, declaring “Bring it home!” during the team’s annual preseason luncheon, as a delighted Snyder looked on.

Council member David Grosso, I-At Large, said once D.C. acquires the land, the council will engage in a methodical public process for determining its best use.

“It’s important for us to have that land under our control,” he said. “I just hope we keep in check the desires of Dan Snyder because he’s proven he can’t be trusted.”

The difference in life expectancy between Virginia cities Manassas Park and Galax, according to the latest County Health Rankings from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, one of the nation’s largest public health philanthropic organizations. Residents of Manassas Park, a city of about 16,500 people outside D.C., live to 91 years old on average. But residents of Galax, a city of about 6,600 a five-hour drive away in Southwest Virginia, typically live to just 66. Man guilty of murder, rape in death of N.C. artist

Charlottesville canceled public school classes Thursday in response to online threat

A man has been convicted of raping and killing a North Carolina artist as she was moving out of an apartment in D.C. El Hadji Toure, 30, formerly of Maryland, was convicted Wednesday and is set to be sentenced in June.

Authorities say 34-year-old Corrina Mehiel was in the District as part of a work-study program at George Washington University.

Her body was found in the sublet apartment March 21, 2017, a day after she was bound, repeatedly stabbed in her neck and side and sexually assaulted. Toure was arrested days later and has been in custody ever since. (AP) CROZET, VA.

NTSB: Truck driver likely caused deadly train crash A trash truck driver who had marijuana in his system likely caused a fatal collision last year with an Amtrak train that was carrying Republican lawmakers, federal investigators concluded Thursday. The National Transportation Safety Board’s final report said the crash in rural Virginia was likely caused by the truck driver’s decision to go around a rail crossing’s lowered safety gates. The ensuing collision killed a passenger in the trash truck and severely injured another. The trash truck’s driver, Dana William Naylor Jr., had already been indicted locally on involuntary manslaughter and DUI charges. (AP) VIRGINIA

Gov. Northam signs bill to lower tax on tampons Virginians will soon be paying less in taxes on tampons and diapers. Gov. Ralph Northam on Wednesday signed legislation that lowers the sales tax rate on essential personal hygiene products. The legislation taxes those products at 2.5 percent, instead of 5.3 percent or higher.

Larry Hogan said Wednesday that a state takeover of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway is the only “viable longterm solution� to fixing the pothole-ridden highway and bringing relief to the hundreds of thousands of commuters who use the route between D.C. and Baltimore.

support a transfer of the National Park Service’s portion of the parkway to the state. In turn, Hogan says, the state will make significant upgrades to the worn-out road — chief among them adding up to four toll lanes. “We have reached a breaking point, with potholes, congestion, crashes and debris creating driving conditions so hazardous that the speed limit between Routes 197 and 32 had to be lowered to 40 miles per hour,� Hogan said. “These conditions are unacceptable for Maryland commuters.�

Suspects in death blamed on beggar are back in Md. A man who garnered sympathy and media attention after saying a panhandler killed his wife has been returned to Baltimore, along with his daughter, to face murder charges. Police say Keith Smith, 52, and his daughter Valeria Smith, 28, both of Baltimore, arrived from Texas early Thursday and were booked on first-degree murder charges. Both were denied bail. The suspects are charged in the death of 54-yearold Jacquelyn Smith. Keith Smith has said his wife was attacked after handing $10 to a roadside panhandler. But police say he concocted that story. Mayor gives back $100K from books BALTIMORE Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh said Wednesday that she has paid taxes on sales of her children’s books and returned the most recent $100,000 she received from the University of Maryland Medical System, as top state officials met to discuss how to address concerns about potential conflicts of interest affecting nearly a third of the system’s board.

Pugh said she’s still working on her latest “Healthy Holly” book and wants to “settle” the relationship after resigning Monday from the network’s board amid questions about the relationship.

The Baltimore Sun reports that Pugh said she understands lawmakers’ concerns about board members’ business deals but called inquiries into hers a “witch hunt.” She declined to provide tax records related to $500,000 she received from the hospital network for her books since 2011.

Mike Miller, an aide to House Speaker Michael Busch and system officials to discuss revelations that about a third of the board has received compensation through the network’s contracts with their businesses. An out-of-order ordeal METRO Anthony Oberg, now 29, has been using a wheelchair since he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a child.

As he sat waiting on the sidewalk outside the East Falls Church Metro station recently, he said he’s grown accustomed to the fact that getting around takes him a little longer sometimes.

“I go only one speed because I can only go one speed,” he said But when things take longer not because of his disability, but because Metro isn’t working as it should, it’s frustrating.

Oberg was in one of those situations that day. He’d hoped to take Metro to West Falls Church, the next station from where he was sitting.

But both elevators from the platform to the mezzanine and the exit were out of service there, which is a problem if you’re in a wheelchair. Getting off the train there would be pointless.

So Oberg, who’d agreed to show a reporter what he has to do when elevators are out, went to the next station that did have a working elevator, East Falls Church.

He rolled himself to the station manager’s booth there and asked for a shuttle van to take him back one stop.

“It’s on the way, buddy” the man behind the glass said after making a call.

So Oberg wheeled himself to the station’s parking lot to wait.

He hoped he wouldn’t have to sit there for 35 minutes like he did one time in Fort Totten, when he found none of the elevators working at the Georgia Ave.Petworth station According to Metro’s quarterly performance reports, riders have been more likely to find elevators out of service

recently, in part because Metro doesn’t have enough qualified elevator mechanics. To keep elevators running 96 percent of the time, as it did during the last six months of 2018 — just short of its 97 percent goal — Metro is spending millions to hire outside elevator technicians.

While that sounds like Metro’s elevator repair people are learning how to use a hammer, Ly said Metro’s in-house mechanics are having to get additional training to fix new technology in the 176 elevators the agency has replaced or renovated. The West Falls Church elevators are among those being renovated.

Given that Metro has 318 elevators at 91 stations, keeping them running 96 percent of the time is a “remarkable job,” Ly said.

But “to help reduce the maintenance backlog,” the report said, the agency had to sign a two-year, $3 million contract with outside technicians.

Oberg, who is on a Metro riders committee for seniors and people with disabilities, was willing to cut the agency a little slack. Still, the West Falls Church outage offered a glimpse of the burden riders encounter when Metro’s elevators are out.

After talking to the station manager that day, Oberg sat for 20 minutes before a white Metro van pulled up. The woman driving the van lowered a ramp in the back, and it took a couple minutes to strap in his wheelchair.

He got to West Falls Church about 35 minutes after he’d hoped to get off the train there.

Return to local safety oversight is big for Metro METRORAIL More than three years after Metro’s history of dangerous calamities prompted U.S. officials to take control of subway safety oversight, the Federal Transit Administration said this week it is ready to return that responsibility to local authorities and free up nearly $50 million in transportation funds that had been withheld from the region.

The FTA’s move is a watershed event for Metro in the effort to reinvent how the rail system’s safety is monitored. The FTA said it is finally satisfied that the yearold Metrorail Safety Commission — made up of safety experts appointed by D.C., Maryland and Virginia — is qualified to oversee the safety of one of the nation’s busiest subways.

Since February 2017, the federal government had been withholding millions of dollars in transportation money from Virginia, Maryland and D.C. because the jurisdictions missed a deadline to create the independent safety board.

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) praised the FTA’s move as “an exciting milestone moment.”

WEATHER The stage is set for unprecedented major flooding this spring for most of the nation, U.S. weather officials said Thursday.

More than 200 million Americans are at risk for some kind of flooding, with 13 million of them at risk of major inundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said in its spring weather outlook. About 41 million people are at risk of moderate flooding.

Major flooding now occurring in Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, Missouri and other Midwestern states is a preview of a wet and dangerous spring, said Mary Erickson, deputy director of the National Weather Service.

“We expect the flooding to get worse and more widespread,” she said.

This year’s flooding “could be worse than anything we’ve seen in recent years, even worse than the historic floods of 1993 and 2011,” she said. Those floods caused billions of dollars in damage, and officials said this year’s damage in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota has already passed the billion-dollar mark.

“This is the broadest expanse of area in the United States that we’ve projected with an elevated risk that I can remember,” said Thomas Graziano, a 20-year weather service veteran and director of the Office of Water Prediction. “Is this the perfect storm? I don’t know.”

It’s too early for scientists to make the complex calculations to see if human-caused climate change played a role in the flooding. However, scientists said the conditions are consistent with what they expect from global warming. There is a long-term, climate change-driven trend that is making extreme rainfalls even more intense, said Texas A&M University climate scientist Andrew Dessler.

President Trump signed an executive order Thursday requiring U.S. colleges to certify that they protect free speech on their campuses or risk losing federal research funding.

Bump stocks set to become illegal in U.S.

ANALYSIS When New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced last Saturday that the country’s gun laws would change, less than 24 hours had passed since a right-wing terrorist attack killed at least 50 in Christchurch. The plan to ban military-style assault weapons had broad support.

To U.S. observers, the almost immediate response might have appeared surprising for a country that shares more similarities in its approach to guns with the U.S. than with the rest of the Western world. On social media, some ironically remarked that New Zealand had not even tried “thoughts and prayers” yet.

Used to express condolences, that term to many Americans now also stands for the chronic policy inaction of U.S. politicians after mass shootings.

On the surface, New Zealand and the U.S. appeared to have a relatively similar approach to guns until last Friday. Both are among the only nations without universal gun registration rules, and both have strong gun lobbies that have stalled attempts to rein in gun owners’ liberties.

New Zealand’s gun lobby shares many of its goals with the National Rifle Association, which supports aligned politicians financially and uses social media to attack its opponents. Some of the NRA’s frequent arguments

may also apply in New Zealand, with an estimated quarter of a million gun owners in a country of only 5 million people.

Given that “there are so many law-abiding gun owners who do not commit violence,” said Daniel Webster, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research, referring to the United States, “the conclusion that many people draw is that mass shootings are due to evil or deeply disturbed individuals and not due to the wide availability of guns.”

But unlike the NRA, New Zealand’s interest groups have predominantly lobbied the government quietly, rather than threatening politicians with the scorn of their powerful voter base. The perceived silence of those lobbying organizations led to some calls from gun enthusiasts for a bolder and more vocal stance. New Zealand’s gun lobbies were probably well aware, however, that they are not the NRA and never will be.

The country’s lobby mainly represents a core of rural supporters, whereas more than 86 percent of New Zealanders now live in urban areas and form a largely liberal majority. In the U.S., the ratio of citizens living in urban areas is slightly lower.

GUN CONTROL The bump stock — the attachment used by the killer during the 2017 Las Vegas massacre to make his weapons fire rapidly like machine guns — will become illegal on Tuesday in the only major gun restriction imposed by the federal government in the past few years.

Unlike with the decade-long assault weapons ban, the government isn’t allowing existing owners to keep their bump stocks. They must be destroyed or turned over to authorities. And the government isn’t offering any compensation for the devices, which can cost hundreds of dollars. Violators can face up to 10 years in prison and thousands of dollars in fines.

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives first ruled that bump stocks were legal in 2010, and since then, the government estimates more than 500,000 have been sold.

Owners are being advised to either destroy them — by crushing them, melting them or cutting them up — or set up an appointment with the ATF to surrender the devices.

Starting next week, a person in possession of a bump stock can face federal charges of illegally possessing a machine gun.

TECHNOLOGY Facebook on Thursday said that it had left “hundreds of millions” of users’ passwords exposed in plain text, potentially visible to the company’s employees, marking another major headache for a tech giant already under fire for mishandling users’ personal information.

Facebook said it believed the passwords were not visible to anyone outside the company and had no evidence that its employees “internally abused or improperly accessed them.”

But it said it would notify users of Facebook as well as its photosharing site, Instagram, that they had been affected.

The incident was first noted by the blog Krebs on Security, which estimated the number of affected users ranged between 200 million and 600 million.

Facebook declined Thursday to confirm that estimate.

It is the latest in a litany of privacy and security mishaps, some of which have triggered investigations in the U.S. and European Union and could carry the risk of steep fines and other punishments.

Facebook said it stores passwords using a common technique called hashing that’s supposed to make them unreadable. The fright crowd: Seeing ‘Us’ with them was a blast I do not like horror movies.

I realize it’s unfair, dismissing an entire genre, but most horror movies fill me with such anticipatory dread that I simply avoid them, the way I do defrosting the freezer or driving with my mother in the car (I’m over 40, Mom. I know how to use a turn signal).

So, of course, this week I saw “Us.” I really had to; it’s the big movie this week, plus it’s the follow-up to writer-director Jordan Peele’s Oscar-winning “Get Out.” I loved “Get Out” once I saw it, which was on my couch with every light in the house on and my dog right next to me — and it’s not even a traditional horror movie.

“Us” hews much more to a conventional horror-movie

conceit. After a short prelude set in 1986, we move to the present day as Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o, in a stunning performance) and husband Gabe (Winston Duke, hilariously playing the man as all dad jokes and embarrassing dabs) have brought their son and daughter to their California beach house for a vacation. One night, they come face to face — literally — with people who look exactly like them but are sporting red jumpsuits. The doppelgangers are angry, and they have scissors. This is a bad combination.

Like “Get Out,” “Us” is about more than its plot, raising questions of identity and community, fairness and justice.

Peele’s use of light, dark and shadow beautifully echoes those themes, and the funny moments come often enough that the terror doesn’t smother

you. It would have been a great movie for me to see on my couch with every light in the house on and my dog right next to me; instead, I saw it in a packed theater. Which was even better.

I think the last horror movie I watched in a theater was 2011’s “The Cabin in the Woods,” during which I hid in the bathroom when I saw the first death coming (I did return). Watching “Us” surrounded by people was so fun. Fun! In a horror movie!

Seeing comedies with an audience is always the best; same with Marvel movies, which bring out a particular brand of fan. I felt that spirit of community here, with people audibly “Oh, no”-ing when one character made one of the stupid decisions that in part define the genre and “Get the keys get the keys GET THE KEYS” when a getaway car

was the only way out. There was applause when an evil lookalike met its grisly end (OR DID IT?) and full-theater jumps when something popped out. We were all in it together.

Of course it wasn’t all fun for me; there were plenty of times when I watched through my peripheral vision while I stared at the floor, silently repeating “It’s just a movie” and counting the lights on the theater steps. But “Us” showed me the value of horror movies as shared experiences. Even though each individual comes in with his or her baggage and biases and leaves with his or her own reactions and experiences, for the space of an hour or two we’re all part of a team.

This does not mean I will be back in a theater for a horror movie anytime soon (given the eight-year gap since “The Cabin in the Woods,” I’ll be due in 2027). It does mean that I understand at least part of what horror fans get when they go to a theater. I see now that gasps and jumps and murmurings of “Get out of the house GET OUT OF THE HOUSE” are ways of building a family.

An old-fashioned pursuit ‘The Highwaymen’ flips the script on the tale of Bonnie and Clyde

Post-war drama ‘The Aftermath’ is a dutiful dud

FILM REVIEW Bonnie Elizabeth Parker and Clyde Chestnut Barrow, the Texas-bred outlaws better known in pop culture by only their first names, cast a long shadow in “The Highwaymen,” a new movie version of the story of how Parker and Barrow robbed and killed their way through a large swath of the country in the early 1930s. Bonnie and Clyde loom large, but they are also largely invisible.

Although we see Bonnie (Emily Brobst) helping to orchestrate a jailbreak in one early scene, it is only from the back. We hardly know what she or her partnerin-crime (Edward Bossert) even look like, until their violent end.

That’s because “The Highwaymen,” an excellent and entertainingly old-fashioned police procedural about the case, isn’t really about Bonnie and Clyde at all. Rather, it’s the true story of the two men who hunted them down: Frank Hamer and Maney Gault, played by Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson as a kind of twangy Holmes and Watson, dogged in their pursuit of justice, and with the ability to identify a brand of tobacco simply by sniffing a cigarette butt.

by the Texas governor, Miriam “Ma” Ferguson (played by a nononsense Kathy Bates). With no jurisdiction outside their home state, Frank and Maney must bend the rules to follow their quarry, who have left a trail of blood and bank robberies from New Mexico to Iowa and south to Louisiana. In doing so, the film’s heroes also run afoul of the U.S. Bureau of Investigation (as the F.B.I. was then known), whose agents are depicted here as arrogant bumblers.

Directed by John Lee Hancock (“The Founder”), “The Highwaymen,” in limited release this week and streaming on Netflix March 29, also grapples with some contemporary themes.

Other echoes of today come from how Bonnie and Clyde use the media — meaning the newspaper — to cultivate a following.

pretty quickly that they’re probably not going to be able to take Bonnie and Clyde alive. In any other version of this story — especially one in which the bad guys are depicted as folk heroes — this realization would be hard to swallow, even accepting the fact that they’re coldblooded murderers.

What’s most interesting is that the word “highwayman” has a double meaning: It can refer both to the bandit and the person who patrols the roadway. Here, that ambiguity suffuses “The Highwaymen,” making what is otherwise a straightforward tale of cops and robbers, one in which the lines between good and evil are so sharply drawn, into a richly nuanced morality story. Canadian sitcom “Schitt’s Creek” will end with a sixth and final season next year, co-creators Dan Levy and Eugene Levy announced Thursday.

The series, which airs on Pop TV and CBC (and streams on Netflix), follows a wealthy family that loses its fortune and moves into a motel in a small town. “It’s not lost on us what a rare privilege it is in this industry to get to decide when your show should take its final bow,” the Levys said. FILM REVIEW There’s a ripping good story buried somewhere in “The Aftermath,” an intriguing but ultimately disappointing story set in the rubble of post-World War II Germany.

A few months after Allied bombs have reduced Hamburg to smoldering ash, British officer Lewis Morgan (Jason Clarke) requisitions a stately home on the city’s outskirts and sends for his wife, Rachael (Keira Knightley), a sadly beautiful waif who is still processing traumatic memories from the Blitz. Morgan, whose colleagues snicker at him behind his back, is appalled at the impoverishment and dispossession suffered by the German people. When the owner of the Morgans’ new home — a handsome architect named Stephen Lubert (Alexander Skarsgard) — prepares to move out, along with his teenage daughter, Morgan insists that he stay. With a possible former Nazi lurking in the attic while a clueless British husband and his bitter wife are enjoying luxe accommodations down below, what could possibly go wrong?

Plenty. But, in the final analysis, not nearly enough. The film devolves into a soap opera full of perfunctory plot twists and sudden, seductive lunges.
