Two women who met as co-workers at a Pennsylvania Walmart were married Saturday at the West Manchester Township store where they work, the York Daily Record reported. While planning their wedding, Chrissy Slonaker Torres and Leida Torres realized some of their co-workers would have to work, since the store is open 24/7. So they held the ceremony at the store’s Garden Center, to the delight of customers. (EXPRESS)

Three American exchange students in Florence, Italy, accidentally set a fire in their apartment Saturday by trying to cook a package of pasta without water, UPI reported. The young women simply put the noodles into the pot, turned on the stove and waited. The predictable outcome involved a visit from the fire department. She had sent the tweet to her 30 followers in a moment of buoyancy, never thinking it would amount to much. Before she knew it, it had been shared more than 1,400 times. “As a DC resident and mother of a high schooler, I’ll help to find free lodging for kids and their families coming to this March,” Elizabeth Andrews, a lawyer, tweeted Feb. 18. Without even realizing it, Andrews had found a need that was growing by the day: Students planning to descend on D.C. this weekend to participate in the March for Our Lives needed a place to stay. If they are under 18, booking a hotel suite or a room on Airbnb is out of the question. For those who are of age, those options can be prohibitively costly. And many don’t have any friends in the area to stay with. So Andrews got to work trying to find housing for what could be thousands of students. Less

than two weeks later, she and a group of seven other mothers had started a full-fledged organization. They had a website, infrastructure, roles. The group, dubbed March for Our Lives Lodging, is one of several efforts in the D.C. area with a singular goal: to provide out-of-town students with a free place to sleep and a community to help them feel welcome.

“I’m a mom, and I do what I’d like done for my kids in terms of safety.” JULIE STEWART, who has been working with the new organization March for Our Lives Lodging as a ”matchmaker,” pairing students coming to the region for the march with families to host them

Others are helping as well. George Washington University students will host other college students in their dorm rooms. Half a dozen students from Walter Johnson High School in Bethesda signed up 250 of their peers across the country to stay in local homes. Faith organizations have worked to pair marchers with local families. Every person who wants to host or be hosted through March for Our Lives Lodging is subject to a vetting process that involves social media background checks and a phone call. For those under 18 traveling alone, parental consent is required. Julie Stewart, a former president of a criminal justice reform group, runs what she calls the “matchmaking process.” She is putting special care into her job, matching students with families that she thinks they will form a connection with. “A lot of these kids are minors who have no adults coming, whose moms are putting them on a bus or a plane,” she said. “We want to make sure we place them in a home where they feel like they’re going to be taken care of.” MARISSA J. THE DISTRICT Big crowds are expected in Washington on Saturday for the March for Our Lives, a rally against gun violence organized by survivors of the Feb. 14 school shooting in Parkland, Fla., that could bring as many as 500,000 protesters to downtown Washington. The event will cause travel and traffic problems. Motorists will encounter day-long road closures near the Mall. Public transit users should expect bus detours and delays, as well as long waits at Metro stations and crowded platforms and trains. “Plan ahead and be patient,” D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham advised participants. “Be prepared for road closures, increased traffic and parking restrictions. It is safe to say that generally getting around in our city starting in the early morning hours of Saturday, March 24, will likely be more challenging than most other Saturdays here in the District.” Officials are asking visitors to use public transportation. Lyft is offering free rides at lyft.com/MFOL. Metro will open at 7 a.m. and provide rush-hourlevel service throughout the day to accommodate the march crowds and other visitors. Thousands of tourists are also in town for the annual National Cherry Blossom Festival. The good news is there is no scheduled track work. Road restrictions will be in place, and parking will be prohibited along the march route. Traffic-control officers will be at various intersections. Visitors should expect tight security, including bag checks to enter the rally area. Leave large backpacks and other prohibited items such weapons and drones at home. Whether you are coming down for the march by car, bus or transit, the key is to have a plan,

The location: The stage will be at Third Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, by the National Gallery of Art. Rally participants will have three points of access to the area: Pennsylvania Avenue and 12th Street NW, Constitution Avenue and Seventh Street NW, and Indiana Avenue and Seventh Street NW. The program: Performances and speeches will begin at noon and continue until about 3 p.m. Participants are expected to arrive much earlier. Performers include Ariana Grande, Demi Lovato, Jennifer Hudson and Common. The march route: Organizers said there will be no march because of the large number of people expected to attend. The group will rally along Pennsylvania Avenue NW from Third Street NW to 12th Street NW. There will be audio and video available along that route. (TWP)

be ready to walk and be patient. The rally is planned by survivors of the school shooting last month in Parkland that left 17 people dead. The march is to demand legislative action in Congress that addresses gun violence and school safety. “No special interest group, no political agenda is more critical than timely passage of legislation to effectively address the gun violence issues that are rampant in our country,” says a statement on the website for the march. Demonstrators will gather for a rally along Washington’s Pennsylvania Avenue. Thousands of young people, their parents and supporters are expected at the event, which is one of more than 800 planned by students around the world, organizers said. Medical tents staffed by volunteers will double as reunification points for groups that get separated. Water will be available. Food trucks will line up nearby. “As the young men and women from Parkland, Fla., have been preparing for Saturday’s event, the District has been preparing to keep them safe here in Washington,” Mayor Muriel Bowser said this week. “We are very much looking forward to supporting this rally.” LUZ LAZO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

PARKLAND, FLA. Most aren’t even old enough to vote, yet the students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School have spearheaded what could become one of the largest marches in history, with at least 500,000 people expected in Washington and more than 800 sister marches around the world. In the wake of the shooting last month in Parkland, Fla., that killed 17, the teens have pulled all-nighters, scheduling speakers, renting stages and walking march routes with police in a grassroots movement that has raised more than $4 million. They have requested 14 Jumbotrons, 2,000 chairs and 2,000 public restrooms. “People don’t think about all these little things, but they add up,” said Marjory Stoneman Douglas senior Ryan Deitsch. In the first two weeks after the shooting, Deitsch worked 22-hour days, often sleeping in his clothes. “I’d basically keep going until I shut down, like I’d just collapse, sometimes I’d be on the floor,” said Deitsch, who is 18. Marjory Stoneman Douglas student Casey Sherman, above, spends most of her time in class working on a sister march in Parkland. “Every day it’s kind of cool because I’m learning things I don’t learn in school,” the 17-year-old said. The ultimate goal, the students said, is to harness the support into votes, with their sights set on November’s midterm elections. KELLI KENNEDY (AP)

D.C. Council member Vincent Gray said he will not challenge Mayor Muriel Bowser in the primary.

Gray was never charged and still commands a loyal following in his base of Southeast Washington. But his reputation remains damaged, and he would likely struggle to build a coalition broad enough to threaten Bowser. A Washington Post poll in the summer showed that the mayor enjoys a 67 percent approval rating. She has raised more than $2 million toward her re-election. In recent months, as education-related scandals buffeted Bowser’s administration, speculation grew about a primary challenge from Gray or council member Robert C. White Jr. But White has said he would not run because the timing is bad for his young family; his daughter is 18 months old. PETER JAMISON (THE WASHINGTON POST)

THE DISTRICT D.C. Council member and former mayor Vincent Gray, Ward 7, will not challenge Mayor Muriel Bowser in the Democratic primary. The decision clears the way for Bowser to secure her party’s nomination — which in overwhelmingly Democratic D.C. typically presages a general election victory — without any serious opponents. In a brief interview Thursday, with the filing deadline for the June primary approaching at day’s end, Gray said he had not tried to gather signatures to get on the ballot. However, he would not rule out the possibility of running against Bowser in the general election — a move that would require him to change his party registration — and said he had been urged to challenge the mayor by residents unhappy with recent scandals in the public school system. “I have heard it just repeatedly,” he said. The decision by Gray, a oneterm mayor whom Bowser defeated in 2014 amid an investigation into his campaign finance activity, had long been anticipated by watchers of D.C. politics.

Transit ridership drops in most major U.S. cities

TRANSPORTATION Transit ridership fell in 31 of 35 major metropolitan areas in the U.S. last year, with losses largely stemming from buses, but punctuated by reliability issues on systems like Metro, according to an annual overview of public transit usage. The analysis by the New Yorkbased TransitCenter advocacy group, using data from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Transit Database, raises alarm about the state of “legacy” public transit systems. Researchers concluded that factors such as lower fuel costs, increased teleworking, higher car ownership and the rise of alternatives such as Uber and Lyft are pulling people off trains and buses at record levels. The data also showed 2017 was the lowest year of overall transit ridership since 2005, according to TransitCenter, and bus ridership alone fell 5 percent. “I think it needs to be considered an emergency,” said Jarrett Walker, a transit planner and a consultant on a top-down bus network redesign to curb cratering ridership in Houston. “When we don’t share space efficiently, we get in each other’s way. And that is a problem for the livelihood, the viability, the livability and

The trend was largely driven by a 6 percent decline in bus ridership. Dramatic losses to subway ridership including a 10

percent decline in 2016 had appeared to level off by 2017, when the total number of trips fell by about 1.5 percent. Between 2016 and 2017, ridership fell in each of the seven largest transit markets: New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, D.C., San Francisco, Boston and Philadelphia. Exceptions to the trend — Seattle, Phoenix and Houston — either expanded transit coverage and boosted service or underwent ambitious network overhauls, as in Houston’s case. (New Orleans’ ridership stayed flat.) Andrew Glass-Hastings, director of transit and mobility for the Seattle Department of Transportation, said: “You can’t neglect your transit system for decades, have it be in disrepair and expect people to continue to use it, especially in a day and age when alternatives are so readily available.” FAIZ SIDDIQUI

The Jerusalem Biblical Zoo says an endangered primate known as a golden lion tamarin was born in captivity two weeks ago to mom Bilbi and dad Zohar. The monkey, so far unnamed, was seen Thursday clinging to its mother’s back. Golden lion tamarins are among the rarest animals in the world, according to the World Wildlife Fund. The Jerusalem zoo says the primate was under threat of extinction in the 1980s, when fewer than 100 were found in its native Brazil. But a breeding program in zoos around the world halted its decline. Today, there are hundreds of golden lion tamarins in the wild and in zoos worldwide. (AP)

Obesity may kill off taste buds

Obesity can rob the tongue of taste buds, according to a study in mice published this week in PLOS Biology. Researchers fed mice a high-fat diet that caused rapid weight gain, and then counted taste buds in a spot on their tongues. The obese mice wound up with 25 percent fewer taste buds than lean mice that were fed a normal diet. SACRAMENTO, CALIF. Community members and Black Lives Matter Sacramento gathered at Sacramento City Hall Thursday to protest the fatal Sunday shooting of Stephon Clark, 22, an unarmed black man, by police in his grandparents’ backyard. Footage from body cameras and an overhead helicopter does not clearly depict what Clark was doing just before police opened fire. Officers did not find a gun at the scene, and independent experts said the recordings raise more questions than they answer. Geoffrey Alpert, a professor of criminology at the University of South Carolina and an expert on police use of force, said the officers may have a tough time explaining why they jumped to the conclusion that Clark had a

gun. He also questioned why an arriving backup officer had the officers turn off the microphones on their body cameras. Sacramento police did not say whether muting the microphones violated department policy nor why the officers waited five minutes to help Clark. The police department said officers were responding to reports of a man seen breaking into vehicles and a neighbor’s home. The police said deputies in the helicopter saw Clark break a neighbor’s sliding glass door before jumping a fence. Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg questioned police policies for providing medical aid after a shooting, but not the split-second decisions. Both officers are on paid administrative leave. POLITICS Primed for economic combat, President Trump set in motion tariffs on as much as $60 billion in Chinese imports to the U.S. on Thursday and accused the Chinese of high-tech thievery, picking a fight that could push the global heavyweights into a trade war. China threatened retaliation, and Wall Street cringed, recording one of the biggest drops of Trump’s presidency. But he declared the U.S. would emerge “much stronger, much richer.” It was the boldest example to date of Trump’s “America first” agenda, the culmination of his long-standing view that weak U.S. trade policies and enforcement have hollowed out the nation’s workforce and ballooned the federal deficit. Two weeks ago, with fanfare, he announced major penalty tariffs on steel and aluminum imports that he said threatened national security. Even as Trump was talking tough at the White House, his administration moved to soften the sting of the metal tariffs, telling Congress on Thursday that the European Union, Australia, South Korea and other nations would join Canada and Mexico in gaining an exemption. And that raised questions about whether his actions will match his rhetoric. China isn’t shrugging him off. “If somebody tries to impose a trade war on us ... we will

certainly fight back and retaliate,” said Cui Tiankai, Chinese ambassador to the U.S. “If people want to play tough, we will play tough with them and see who will last longer.” Trump, joined by supportive business executives, complained bitterly about the nation’s trade deficit and accused China of stealing America’s prized technology. “Any way you look at it, it is the largest deficit of any country in the history of our world. It’s out of control,” Trump said of the U.SChina imbalance. The U.S. reported a $375 billion deficit with China last year, which Trump has blamed for the loss of American jobs and closing of plants. The president said the tariffs could cover “about $60 billion” in trade with China, but senior White House officials said the U.S. Trade Representative had identified 1,300 product lines worth about $50 billion as potential targets. That list will include aerospace, information and communication technology, and machinery, according to a USTR fact sheet. The order signed by Trump directed the trade representative to publish a list of proposed tariffs for public comment within 15 days. Trump also asked Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to come up with a list of restrictions on Chinese investment and said the administration was preparing a case before the World Trade Organization. Business groups and Republican lawmakers are worried his tariffs could undercut actions they have welcomed in his first year. Dozens of industry groups sent

a letter last weekend to Trump warning that “the imposition of sweeping tariffs would trigger a chain reaction of negative consequences for the U.S. economy, provoking retaliation, stifling U.S. agriculture, goods, and services exports, and raising costs for businesses and consumers.” But some labor unions and Democrats said Trump was justified in delivering a swift blow to China. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, said: “Chinese cheating has cost American jobs and I applaud the administration for standing firm in its commitment to crack down on China’s continued violations.” PAUL WISEMAN AND KEN THOMAS (AP)

Markets take a dive Stocks plunged Thursday after the Trump administration slapped sanctions on goods and investment from China. The Dow Jones industrial average dropped more than 700 points, or 2.9 percent. The S&P 500 index skidded 68.24 points, or 2.5 percent. Investors fear that trade tensions between the world’s largest economies could escalate, harming U.S. companies and the world economy. On Thursday they fled stocks and bought bonds. With interest rates falling, banks took some of the worst losses, along with technology and industrial companies, basic materials makers and health care companies. (AP)

Study: Ocean garbage patch growing denser ENVIRONMENT Approximately 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic debris, totaling 79,000 tons, are spread around an area three times the size of France in the Pacific Ocean between California and Hawaii, a scientific team from the Ocean Cleanup Foundation reported Thursday in the journal Scientific Reports. The amount of plastic found in this area, known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, is “increasing exponentially,” according to the surveyors, who used two planes and 18 boats to assess the ocean pollution. The Garbage Patch has been described before. But this new survey estimates that the mass of plastic contained there is four to 16 times larger than previously supposed. The overall size of the patch does not seem to be changing, but the trash within the patch seems to be accumulating, or growing denser. The “patch” is not a single mass, but a large area with high volumes of plastics, one in which concentrations increase markedly nearer to its center. The debris ranges from tiny flecks to enormous discarded fishing nets, which make up 46 percent of the material, the study found. The study’s lead author, Laurent Lebreton, called the findings “alarming.” He added: “It really shows the urgency of this situation.” CHRIS MOONEY

Bipartisan bill increases budget for military, domestic programs

Politics The House easily approved a bipartisan $1.3 trillion spending bill Thursday that pours huge sums into Pentagon programs and domestic initiatives ranging from building roads to combating the nation’s opioid abuse crisis, but left Congress in stalemate over shielding young Dreamer immigrants from deportation and curbing surging health insurance premiums. The vote was 256-167, a onesided tally that underscored the popularity of a budget deal among party leaders that provided enough money to address many of both sides’ priorities. The House approved the 2,232page package — which stood around a foot tall on some legislators’ desks — less than 17 hours after negotiators released it publicly. The Senate was expected to vote on the bill after Express’ deadline Thursday night. If Republican senators critical of the bill’s spending delay its approval until after midnight Friday night, that would prompt the year’s third federal shutdown. legislation, even though he tweeted Wednesday that he “had to waste money on Dem giveaways” on domestic programs to win increases for the military. Congressional Republicans focused on the bill’s defense increases, and Democrats touted spending boosts on biomedical research, child care and infrastructure projects. Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., attributed part of the House’s hasty work on the measure to GOP fears of being stuck in Washington on Saturday, when huge throngs of students are expected to march in support of gun control. Pelosi said, “They just don’t want to be around when the young people come to town.” ANDREW TAYLOR and LISA MASCARO (AP)

McMaster out, Bolton in POLITICS President Trump said Thursday that he was naming former ambassador John Bolton, a Fox News commentator and conservative firebrand, as his new national security adviser, replacing Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster. The president announced the news in a tweet: “I am pleased to announce that, effective 4/9/18, @AmbJohnBolton will be my new National Security Advisor. I am very thankful for the service of General H.R. McMaster who has done an outstanding job & will always remain my friend.

Former ambassador to take over as Trump’s national security adviser John Bolton, right, is replacing H.R. McMaster as national security adviser.

There will be an official contact handover on 4/9.” McMaster, a respected threestar general, came to the Trump administration with a highly accomplished combat record in Iraq and a reputation as one of the Army’s best thinkers on the subject of battling insurgents and the future of war. His 1997 book, “Dereliction of Duty,” was harshly critical of the military’s top brass for passively

backing a strategy in Vietnam, advanced by the White House, that they knew would not lead to victory. As national security adviser, however, McMaster never forged the kind of bond that would allow him to speak honestly to the president. At times, Trump, who repeatedly clashed with McMaster and complained that he was stubborn, didactic and long-winded, seemed to tune out the active-duty general.

Talk that McMaster would soon leave the administration had picked up in recent weeks. The White House said McMaster’s exit had been under discussion for some time and stressed it was not due to any one incident. McMaster is credited with improving morale and bringing order to the National Security Council following the forced departure of his predecessor, Michael Flynn, early last year. But McMaster often struggled to steer the foreign policy debate. He lacked the backing of Trump and had a tense relationship with Defense Secretary Jim Mattis. In Bolton, Trump has chosen a frequently combative personality who fits more with his style.

Congress asks Zuckerberg to testify on Cambridge Analytica; Mueller examining firm, Trump ties

POLITICS President Trump’s lead lawyer in the special counsel’s Russia investigation resigned Thursday, shaking up the legal team just as Trump intensifies attacks on an inquiry he calls nothing more than a witch hunt. The departure of attorney John Dowd, above, removes the primary negotiator and strategist who had been molding Trump’s defense. It also comes days after the Trump legal team added a new lawyer, ex-U.S. Attorney Joseph diGenova, who has accused FBI officials of being involved in a “brazen plot” to exonerate Hillary Clinton in the email probe and to “frame” Trump for nonexistent crimes. Dowd confirmed his decision in an email, saying, “I love the President and wish him well.” Dowd said he made the decision voluntarily and he denied reports that his departure had to do with Trump ignoring his legal advice. Dowd said he formally resigned Thursday morning. It already was a delicate time in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. Trump’s attorneys, including Dowd, have been negotiating with Mueller over the scope and terms of an interview of the president. Trump said that he was eager to speak with Mueller, but Dowd has been far more apprehensive. Asked Thursday whether he still wants to speak with Mueller’s team, Trump told reporters, “Yes, I would like to.” CHAD DAY AND ERIC TUCKER (AP)

REVERSE TYPE II DIABETES You’re Invited to a

Free Diabetic Event This Diabetes presentation will discuss how many Type II Diabetics have been able to reduce and eliminate their need for prescription medication and insulin, lose weight without exercise, reduce and eliminate the risk for diabetic complications, and even become clinically nondiabetic. Also discover rarely used diagnostic testing that is helping doctors understand potential causes of diabetes beyond genetics, weight gain, dieting, and lack of exercise.

Here is what Drs. Chaney’s patients are saying... “When I started my A1C was 12.5 - it was terrifying. The program to me was life changing. When I thought I was eating right they let me know that what I was eating was good for some people but it wasn’t good for me. I thank God for Dr. Steph and Dr. Tom Chaney because they turned my life around.”

“I am reporting to you three years after joining the program. I am 50 pounds lighter, I am happier, healthier and my A1C is no longer 13 but 5.4.”

-Glennis G.

-Milton A.

“I can not tell you how great I feel. My energy is way up and my sleep is so much better. I am thrilled with Dr. Tom and Dr. Steph for helping me regain my personal health and reverse my diabetes.”

-Barry B.

“When I started this program my A1C was 8.9. My current A1C is 5.7. I was taking Metformin and two types of blood pressure medications. My blood sugars before the program were running in the 180’s. Now my blood sugars are running in the 110’s. After 2 months in the program my doctors stopped my Metformin - that was phenomenal! I’ve also lost 25 pounds.”

“My first visit was very pleasant. My second visit is what changed my life. I have been a patient for 6 months. My A1C has gone from 6.6 to 5.7. I started out 70 pounds heavier. But coming to Living Health wasn’t about weight loss it was about type 2 diabetes. As you can see from my numbers that my type 2 diabetes has been reversed which is the intent of the program.”

“I came to this program because my A1C had drastically gone up to 9.2 and I was 215 pounds. Six months into the program my A1C dropped from 9.2 to 6.2 and my weight has dropped from 215 pounds to 195.”

“All I can say is it really works. I’ve been in the program for 5 months and I feel like a whole new woman. I’ve lost 40 pounds, I’m not on any diabetic medication anymore - that stopped pretty quick! My A1C went from 7.8 to 6.”

-Marissa M.

My A1C was 8. Two months after that it was 6.4. As of a couple of days ago it is 5.9. I am ecstatic about that. I can only hope...I know, not hope, I know...that my blood sugars have come down, so the weight will come off. The blood pressure, I’ll be off of that medication. I have no doubt that I’ll be off of my diabetes medication and it’s all thanks to the Drs. Chaney and their facilities and I’m so happy.”

Tigers’ advantage: Guard play. Senior Gabe DeVoe and juniors Marcquise Reed and Shelton Mitchell are all 6 feet 3 and average more than 12 points per game. DeVoe hit six 3s and scored 22 points Sunday, when the Tigers held No. 4 seed Auburn to 19 points in the first half.

7:27 p.m. Friday, TBS

Mountaineers’ advantage: Chaos. With coach Bob Huggins’ full-court press, West Virginia forces 16.5 turnovers per game this season — the best of any team left in the tournament — and wears opponents out. Senior Jevon Carter is made for the system. Forward Lamont West was a nice complement with 18 points off the bench in a 23-point win over Marshall.

3 Rhode Island

Wildcats’ advantage: Accuracy. Villanova shot 50.3 percent from the field this year and is the highest-scoring team in the nation (86.9 ppg). Junior leader Jalen Brunson will have to drive to break the press. The Wildcats need Donte DiVincenzo, who had 18 points vs. Alabama, to score off the bench.

Hurley’s departure creates an opening with a Rams team he elevated into a contender over six years. This season’s Atlantic 10 champs have been to two straight NCAA Tournaments. AP AND GETTY IMAGES/EXPRESS ILLUSTRATIONS

Jayhawks’ advantage: Experience. Knowing that coach Bill Self has won a national title and made two Final Fours has to make his players feel that much more comfortable. Senior point guard Devonte’ Graham averages the fourthmost assists in the nation (7.5 per game). Plus, Malik Newman, a sophomore transfer, poured in 28 points to help the Jayhawks survive Seton Hall.

Orange’s advantage: Familiarity. Syracuse scored a season-low 44 points in a Feb. 24 loss to the Blue Devils in ACC play. But on the plus side, Jim Boeheim should have more answers with a second shot against a zone defense similar to his own that Mike Krzyzewski installed midseason. Sophomore Tyus Battle scored 17 against Michigan State and is adept at getting to the free throw line.

Red Raiders’ advantage: Hard-nosed defense. Texas Tech allowed just 64.6 points per game this season and gave up 60 and 66 in its two tournament wins. Senior guard Keenan Evans piled up 45 points in the first two rounds. Zhaire Smith, a 6-foot-5 freshman, filled up the stat sheet against Florida with 18 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.

Blue Devils’ advantage: Shooters. Duke has made 55.1 percent of its shots in the tournament, and Boeheim’s zone will tempt the Blue Devils to shoot 3-pointers. Three regulars shoot better than 41 percent from long range. That doesn’t include Grayson Allen, but he’s known to discover hot streaks.

Boilermakers’ advantage: Poise. Purdue wasn’t rattled when center Isaac Haas went down with a broken elbow in the first round, and the team didn’t crumble when Butler made a late run in a 76-73 win. Senior Vincent Edwards has been huge with 35 points in the tournament. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

Draft priorities: Redskins could pick a back first The Redskins are clearing a path toward taking a running back in the first round of the NFL draft April 26. Washington hasn’t picked one in the first round since 1967, and that pick proved to be a bust. But the Redskins desperately need to fill a position that has lacked reliability in the two years since Alfred Morris left. Coach Jay Gruden said on 106.7 The Fan this week that there’s a “good possibility” the team will take a runner early in the draft. After already filling needs by signing former Seahawks receiver Paul Richardson and ex-Cowboys cornerback

Orlando Scandrick, the Redskins are searching for a nose tackle and an outside linebacker in free agency. If Washington is able to address those needs, everything points to taking a running back on the first night. However, no one at the position really makes sense to go with the No. 13 overall pick. Washington may be able trade down, recoup the third-round pick it gave up in the trade for new quarterback Alex Smith and still get the featured back it wants. This draft is one of the deepest in years. Four quarterbacks could fly off the board in the first 10 picks, so Washington’s place is more valuable than usual. There should be plenty of defensive stars — like

Washington defensive tackle Vita Vea — available lower than they would be in other years. The Redskins will receive trade offers, allowing them to slide back and select Southern Cal’s Ronald Jones, Georgia’s Sony Michel or LSU’s Derrius Guice. Penn State’s Saquon Barkley, a projected top-five pick, is the only surefire firstrounder at the position. If Vea or Alabama nose tackle Da’Ron Payne prove too tempting in the first round, running back could become the second priority. San Diego State’s Rashaad Penny, or maybe Georgia’s Nick Chubb are expected to be available in the middle rounds. Offensive lineman is another position that could be addressed. Shawn Lauvao, the starting left guard last year, is a free agent, but the Redskins have shown no interest in signing his replacement. If they are able to recoup a third-round pick, Texas-El Paso’s Will Hernandez could be a nice fit there as a project for offensive line coach Bill Callahan. Frank Ragnow (Arkansas), Braden Smith

DL market dwindling Yet another free agent defensive lineman who had visited the Redskins went on to sign elsewhere Wednesday. Sylvester Williams chose the Lions after leaving Washington this week. Muhammad Wilkerson already picked the Packers after the Redskins hosted him. Johnathan Hankins may be the Redskins’ last hope before the draft. Sheldon Richardson signed with the Vikings, and Dontari Poe inked a three-year deal with the Panthers. The Titans re-signed DaQuan Jones, and Ndamukong Suh is likely too expensive. (THE WASHINGTON POST)

(Auburn) or Billy Price (Ohio State) are alternatives. This will be the first draft board led by senior vice president of player personnel Doug Williams. Predecessors claimed to take the best player available, but often went with need. Williams will try to satisfy both angles, and trading down would allow him to do so.

Rebuilding after a 3-13 season, the Giants traded defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul to Tampa Bay on Thursday. New York will get the Buccaneers’ third-round pick (69th overall). The teams will also swap fourth-rounders, with the Bucs moving up to the 102nd pick and the Giants picking 108th. Pierre-Paul, 29, signed a four-year, $62 million deal last year. The Bucs had just 22 sacks in 2017 and already signed DE Vinny Curry. (AP) After scoring par on front nine, Tony Romo shoots 5-over 77 in PGA Tour debut in Dominican Republic

Free agent safety Reid says he won’t protest Eric Reid, a free agent safety who kneeled during the national anthem alongside Colin Kaepernick when they played for the 49ers, said Thursday that he doesn’t plan to protest during the anthem this season. Reid, 26, has received no offers despite strong play. Pro Football Focus gave him an “above average” grade (81.4) last season. (AP) MLB

Mets’ Montero will likely get Tommy John surgery Right-hander Rafael Montero will probably miss the season for the Mets. New York said Thursday that Montero, 27, has a complete tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow and will likely need Tommy John surgery. He was 5-11 with a 5.52 ERA in 18 starts and 16 relief appearances last year. He gave up 13 runs in nine innings of spring ball. (AP) GOLF

Frank Gore, the NFL’s active rushing leader, is joining his hometown team. He agreed to a one-year deal with the Dolphins on Thursday, according to multiple reports. Gore, who turns 35 next month, was still subject to a physical. He grew up in South Florida and played for the Miami Hurricanes. Last year, he rushed for 961 yards with the Colts. His 14,026 career yards rank fifth on the all-time list. (AP)

Dustin Johnson bounced from Match Play in Austin A year ago, no one could beat Dustin Johnson. Now he can’t beat anyone in the Match Play. The world No. 1 was eliminated from his group Thursday in Austin, Texas, when he lost, 4 and 3, to Adam Hadwin. Johnson lost to Bernd Wiesberger in the opening round. Justin Thomas is in line to snag the No. 1 ranking if he can win the Match Play. (AP)

CONFLICTING REPORTS

A knee injury limited Zlatan Ibrahimovic to five appearances with Manchester United this season.

GARETH COPLEY (GETTY IMAGES)

Did players ask Leonard to come back?

Coming to America: Ibrahimovic joins MLS Star forward, 36, leaves English league to sign 2-year, $3M deal in L.A. SOCCER Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the perpetually transferring soccer star with more league titles than absurd one-liners (it’s close), is moving yet again to a new team and league. After stints in Italy, Spain, France and England, the 36-yearold is joining MLS to play for the L.A. Galaxy, he announced Thursday. Ibrahimovic’s move to MLS follows two seasons in England’s Premier League, where he scored 29 goals in 53 matches for Manchester United. Sports Illustrated reported that Ibrahimovic signed a two-year, $3 million deal and could debut

on March 31 against LAFC. “Great things also come to an end and it is time to move on after two fantastic seasons with Manchester United,” he wrote on Twitter. “Thank you to the club, the fans, the team, the coach, the staff and everybody who shared with me this part of my history. #foreverred” It’s hard to find a comparable talent that has changed teams as often as Ibrahimovic. No one else has played in the Champions League for seven different teams. Ibrahimovic has played for some of the best teams in the world: Barcelona, AC Milan, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain to name a few. The Swedish forward is coming off a knee injury last year that limited him to five appearances for Manchester United this

season. Before the injury, he was incredibly efficient, scoring 17 goals in 28 matches last season. Even at 36, he still has a cannon of a right leg and is a menace to defend in set pieces, so he should be the Galaxy’s best goal scorer, even if it’s in limited minutes, as the Galaxy finished last in the Western Conference last season. If the Galaxy can win it all with Ibrahimovic, it will mark the fifth different league in which he’s won a title. Ibrahimovic announced his international retirement at Euro 2016 and in typically understated fashion said, “I made the country my country.” Earlier this month he said “the door hasn’t been shut,” so we may still see him play for Sweden in the World Cup this summer. THOMAS JOHNSON

Led by Tony Parker, the Spurs’ players held a players-only meeting this week to confront Kawhi Leonard about a quadriceps injury that has kept him out of all but nine games this season. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Leonard’s teammates “implored” him to return to the lineup in a tense and emotional scene. That is at odds with a report from Jabari Young of the San Antonio ExpressNews, who described a less contentious meeting in which Leonard said his goal was to return, and his teammates supported him. ESPN has reported that Leonard has “been long cleared.” (TWP)

DEVELOPMENTAL STARTER

Nats option Fedde to Class AAA

The Nationals optioned Erick Fedde to minor league camp Thursday, a move that allows the young right-hander to build experience as a prospective starter. “He had a really good spring training,” manager Dave Martinez said. Fedde, 25, made six appearances this spring, two starts, and allowed four earned runs over 14⅔ innings. His velocity, which dipped last year, returned to the mid-90s. His change-up and slider looked improved. (TWP)

WASHINGTONPOST.COM SOCCER INSIDER

U.S. prospect emerges from Dutch league The newest scoring prospect for the U.S. men’s national soccer team is a 6-foot-4 striker with Serbian roots who was born and bred in Wisconsin, carries American and British passports and is under contract with a club in England but is amassing goals at a crazy rate in the Netherlands. Andrija Novakovich, above, is just 21. Through this week and part of next in Raleigh, N.C., he will aim to impress in his first senior training camp, which will culminate Tuesday against Paraguay in a friendly in Cary, N.C. The U.S. failed to qualify for this summer’s World Cup. With an eye on the 2022 cycle, the roster is loaded with young players. Novakovich is a lesser known figure who did not feature prominently in the youth national teams and quietly went overseas four years ago. He signed with Reading, a second-tier English club, and toiled in the development program before going on loan to a fifth-flight team. After returning to Reading, he joined Telstar, a second-division Dutch side. The arrangement has yielded eye-catching results: 18 goals in 29 matches, including six in the past five appearances. U.S. soccer has developed target forwards such as Brian McBride and Jozy Altidore, but no one as tall as Novakovich. Tall players in the U.S. system have typically been central defenders and goalkeepers. STEVEN GOFF

ALSO OPENING

‘Uprising’ is all action, no heart FILM REVIEW The sequel “Pacific Rim: Uprising” is, like the 2013 “Pacific Rim,” something of a chimera: a cheesy Japanese monster movie for people who happen to love “Transformers” for its gigantic, battling robots and thunderous soundtrack, and “Power Rangers” for its cast of teeny-bopper heroes and kinetic, overeager display of martial arts action. Set 10 years after the action of the first film, “Uprising” is, once again, all about skyscraper-size battle-bots, controlled by teams of two pilots synced up to each other via a kind of mind-meld. Once called upon to defend the world from an invasion of Godzillaesque monsters, or kaiju, who have escaped through holes in the Earth’s crust from another dimension, the oversize Rock ’Em Sock ’Em Robots, known as

Jaegers, now operate as giant, metallic beat cops. Working for the Pan-Pacific Defense Corps, a kind of “RoboCop”-like police department in a post-apocalyptic but peaceful world, Jaegers, as the film opens, seem mostly tasked with impounding unregistered cyborgs that have been jerry-built from scavenged Jaeger parts. Until, that is, there’s another kaiju breach. Gone from this outing is Idris Elba as hero Stacker Pentecost, the gruff but warmhearted Jaeger pilot from the first film. In the wake of his death saving the universe, which we’re told took place in the gap between films, his son Jake (John Boyega) has been left to wrestle with Dad’s legacy. Jake, a jaded former pilot himself, now scrapes together a living selling stolen engine components from decommissioned Jaegers and black-market Sriracha sauce. (There’s a lot of cheeky, post-apocalyptic humor here, but it mostly falls flat.) When things start to get hairy

UNIVERSAL/LEGENDARY

The ‘Pacific Rim’ sequel loses its spark with a new cast and director

‘Ramen Heads’

In the latest “Transformers” — sorry, we mean in “Pacific Rim: Uprising” — giant robots called Jaegers serve as a post-apocalyptic police department.

‘Pacific Rim: Uprising’ (PG-13, 111 min.) DIRECTOR: Steven S. DeKnight STARS: John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny IN A NUTSHELL: Jake Pentecost, son of Stacker Pentecost from the first “Pacific Rim,” leads a new generation of Jaeger pilots against a new threat.

— first a pilotless, rogue Jaeger appears from beneath the ocean, then other signs of a kaiju breach — Jake must team up with a teen girl (Cailee Spaeny). An orphan like Jake, she shows an aptitude for mechanics and scrappy

derring-do. There is a plot twist involving a character from the first film, but many in the new cast play adolescent members of a Jaeger pilot academy, which makes the pandering to the youth audience — and the market for Jaeger action figures — obvious. Director Steven S. DeKnight, a TV producer and director known for Netflix’s “Daredevil,” has taken the reins here from filmmaker Guillermo del Toro. DeKnight’s “Pacific Rim” is loud, packed with impressive effects and propulsive — or as propulsive as a car with no brakes going downhill — but it lacks the heart of del Toro’s original. STREAMING

Seth Rogen reminds us he has funny friends

For the first time, Seth Rogen’s annual Hilarity for Charity benefit will be broadcast as a Netflix special. The variety show, debuting in April, will include stand-up, sketches and music from James Corden, Jeff Goldblum, Tiffany Haddish, Kumail Nanjiani, the Muppets and Post Malone. Rogen started the event in 2012 with wife Lauren to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s disease care and research. (EXPRESS)

Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Platt to sing “Found/Tonight” at March for Our Lives Saturday

Although “Ramen Heads” is an interesting glance at the craft of ramen — it follows chef Osamu Tomita, who has won “Best Ramen of the Year” from Japan’s most prestigious ramen guidebook four years in a row — it ends up feeling lukewarm. It doesn’t add up to that much, other than to inspire, perhaps, a certain wanderlust, or a lingering craving to slurp up a bowl after leaving the screening. MAURA JUDKIS (TWP)

‘Hannah’ Unrated, 95 min.

When Charlotte Rampling first appears here, the title character is in the midst of a screeching vocal exercise — part of an amateur drama troupe exercise. The veteran English actress, 72, gives a first-rate lesson in acting, as a woman crumbling under duress after her husband is incarcerated. And yet the drama could also be called self-indulgent and plodding. SUSAN WLOSZCZYNA (TWP)

A city’s dog population is banished to an island in “Isle of Dogs.” But they let the cats stay?!

FOX SEARCHLIGHT PICTURES

Horror flick ‘Unsane’ wastes its A-list talent

KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST

Scary monsters: ‘Isle of Dogs’ looks fear in the snout It would be nice if people didn’t believe what they believe just because they were told to believe it. Think about all the stories of people who support the removal of non-criminal undocumented immigrants because they’re a danger to society — right up until the policy grabs their next-door neighbor, who never did anything wrong and threw really great barbecues and whose daughters were just so sweet. They never intended for that guy to be deported; they just wanted the OTHER guys, the ones not like him, gone. Or those who argue that marriage is a sacred arrangement between a man and his third wife (twice married herself), right up until they

meet their son’s really nice boyfriend. The most effective way to change people’s minds about “those people” is to find a “them” that matters to “us.” “Isle of Dogs” is like that, but with puppers. Director Wes Anderson’s second stop-motion animated film (after 2009’s “Fantastic Mr. Fox”) is a wryly funny, deeply sweet yet never saccharine story of a boy, Atari (Koyu Rankin), who travels to an island full of exiled dogs in order to save his best friend Spots (Liev Schreiber). All of the town’s canines were sent off the mainland after a dog-hating tyrannical leader drummed up fear about illnesses. Atari, though, knows that Spots is a good boy a very good boy yes he is yes he is. So he flies to the island, whereupon he crashes because he is a boy flying an

airplane, and teams up with a pack to bring Spots home. Of course, Atari doesn’t believe that Spots is the only good boy a very good boy yes he is yes he is. If Spots is a good boy (OK, you get the picture), then there must be other good boys (etc., etc.), too. Atari and the small group of people who support dog rights all do so because they have had dogs who loved them, who jumped around like idiots when they came home and who wouldn’t leave them alone for seriously five minutes I am just going to go to the bathroom, OK? Political change often comes from personal contact. It is a slow — agonizingly slow — technique, but the results are often permanent. Minds may change and positions may evolve on the theoretical, but

‘Isle of Dogs’ (PG-13, 101 min.) DIRECTOR: Wes Anderson STARS: Bryan Cranston, Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Greta Gerwig IN A NUTSHELL: After the canine pets of Megasaki City are exiled to a vast garbage dump, a 12-year-old sets off in search of his dog.

Fred Savage denies allegations that he was abusive to woman on “The Grinder” set

it’s hard to retreat from the practical. Most people’s views on gun control, for example, evolve throughout their lives. They get a text from their teenager who’s under a desk and their mind gets made up for good real quick. And if their mind isn’t made up, it’s safe to assume their teenager’s is. The majority of people in “Isle of Dogs” believe a lot of theoretical things that make them feel personally threatened. The line between the personal and the political got very blurred, and could stay that way, because the people were told that dogs are bad and, since most of them hadn’t met a good dog, that seemed reasonable enough. It would be nice if they had looked critically at the information and seen it for the sham it was, but that’s hard for anyone to do — especially if no one else around you is doing it, either. But when the facts get in their face, and the facts have a wet nose and a wagging tail, the theoretical falls away. One good boy can undo a lot of damage — and make it stay undone. FILM REVIEW In “Unsane,” Claire Foy (“The Crown”) stars as Sawyer, a woman who has recently moved to Pennsylvania from Massachusetts to escape a stalker. After visiting a psychiatrist, where she ill-advisedly admits to feeling suicidal on occasion, she’s handed a paper to sign and, without reading it, finds that she has just “voluntarily” committed herself to a 24-hour stay in a psychiatric hospital — a period of observation that quickly becomes an involuntary, weeklong incarceration after she tries to renege on the deal and slugs a staff member in the face. Once she’s stuck there, Sawyer finds that her psychotic tormentor from Boston (Joshua Leonard) is — reasonably enough — employed by the hospital. Or is Sawyer the psychotic one and Mr. Stalker simply a figment of her tortured imagination? That’s the conundrum that “Unsane’s” trailer would have you believe this movie is about, but don’t buy it. “Unsane” is a straightforward, B-movie horror flick — and it’s very, very bad. What possible mishap of legal paperwork could explain why Steven Soderbergh would have ever agreed to direct this lazy, misbegotten mess? Matt Damon also appears in a flashback cameo. Did the actor lose a bet? There’s no other reason to explain why A-listers would associate themselves with this garbage. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN (THE WASHINGTON POST)

‘The Spy Who Dumped Me’

‘Under the Silver Lake’

EXPECTED RELEASE: Aug. 3

EXPECTED RELEASE: June 22

SUMMARY: Mila Kunis plays a woman who discovers that her ex (Justin Theroux) is a CIA agent, and that somehow means that bad guys are after her and her friend (Kate McKinnon). Why seems to be largely irrelevant; the discovery mainly seems to lead to a lot of running and yelling and what looks like some fairly promising comedy. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)

SUMMARY: A man (Andrew Garfield) discovers a woman (Riley Keough) swimming in his apartment complex pool and immediately becomes smitten. Then she vanishes and instead of being like, “What a weirdo,” he starts looking for hidden messages in the world around him to try to track her down. Then it gets really weird. K.P.K.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
