A California man launched a homemade rocket Saturday in the Mojave Desert, Sky News reported. Mike Hughes, 61, was aboard his creation, which reached about 1,875 feet at a speed of roughly 350 mph. The rocket sported the words “Research Flat Earth” on its side. Hughes exited via parachute and was slightly injured. “I’m tired of people saying I chickened out and didn’t build a rocket. I’m tired of that stuff. I manned up and did it,” he said. (EXPRESS)
A life-size animatronic Tyrannosaurus rex burst into flames Thursday at a dinosaur-themed park in Canon City, Colo. Co-owner Zach Reynolds said the T. rex at the Royal Gorge Dinosaur Experience smoldered for about 10 minutes before it caught fire. Visitors watched as the inferno spread through the dinosaur. Reynolds said the T. rex was a total loss, but at least “it made for some spectacular imagery along the way.” (AP)
Even Father Jesus isn’t above the law of man. The city of Gulfport, Miss., on Thursday denied a proposal for a church by a man named Father Jesus, saying he failed to have a professional engineer draw up the plans. Jesus said the church he’s calling “Saints of the Most High” would be just 12 feet by 24 feet, and he’d begin with only three members. The Sun Herald of Biloxi reports that area residents questioned what Jesus stands for. (AP)

THE DISTRICT He stands 9 feet tall and weighs 6.5 tons, and his name is Spike. Friday morning, he walked backward into the elephant compound at the National Zoo to become the biggest elephant in the house and the zoo’s biggest resident in recent memory. Spike, a male Asian elephant with impressive tusks and the heft of a delivery truck, arrived after a 900-mile overnight road trip from Busch Gardens Tampa, where he had lived since 2013. He walked through a portal at the elephant house labeled “Loadout” to begin his new life with the zoo’s six female pachyderms and to renew acquaintances. His chief assignment is to mate with the zoo’s youngest female elephant — his old flame, Maharani — and produce offspring, said Bryan Amaral, a senior zoo curator. Asian elephants are critically endangered, and every birth in captivity is crucial. “There’s a huge effort and a purpose to

Spike and Maharani because they knew each other intimately when both lived at the Calgary Zoo in Canada several years ago
for about a decade. Spike, 36, and Maharani, 27, produced three calves there. None survived. One was a premature stillbirth. Another died of disease. And the third died after reportedly being rejected by Maharani and Maharani’s mother, Kamala. In 2012, the Calgary Zoo announced that it was closing its elephant exhibit and shipping out its elephants. Spike went to Tampa. And Maharani, Kamala, 43, and another elephant, Swarna, also 43, came to Washington. Spike’s arrival reunites the group. And Amaral said keepers will closely monitor the dynamic. In addition to Maharani, Kamala and Swarna, the other female elephants at the zoo are Ambika, 70, Shanthi, 43, and Bozie, 43. All are Asian elephants. “It’s fantastic,” Amaral said in an interview at the zoo Thursday about the elephant group. “Having happy, healthy, well-cared for, well-adjusted elephants is great . . . [but] there is nothing we can do as animal-care staff as enriching as putting a baby elephant on the ground for these elephants to be with.”

Great Mills students march in D.C. days after shooting at their school
MONTGOMERY COUNTY
Police: Woman kills her great-grandmother
JOSE LUIS MAGANA (AP)
MARCH FOR OUR LIVES Four days earlier, they had been regular high school students heading to their first-period class. That was before they suddenly found themselves hiding in darkened classrooms, frantically texting parents and friends about someone with a gun in their southern Maryland building. On Saturday, as they worked their way up Pennsylvania Avenue to the March for Our Lives rally, about 100 students from Great Mills High School in St. Mary’s County put on brave faces, shouting “We Are! Great Mills!” Some in the crowd recognized the name. “They’re from the school where someone just got shot,” one man said to a friend. Many were friends of Jaelynn Willey, a 16-year-old sophomore who died Thursday after her family took her off life support, saying she was brain dead. Police said Willey had been shot in the head in a hallway Tuesday by a former boyfriend, Austin Wyatt Rollins, 17, who was firing a Glock handgun owned by his father. Rollins also died, though police haven’t said yet whether he shot himself or was killed by the armed school resource officer who confronted him. A 14-year-old, Desmond Barnes, was shot in the leg. At the rally, the Great Mills students dressed in dark green and gold sweatshirts, many

emblazoned with “Hornets Nation.” They joined in chants of “Vote them out!” and carried signs saying “Justice for Jaelynn” and “It happened at my school.” “There’s still the numbness from the shock,” said Nolin Bradley, 18, a senior. Aaron Foreman, 46, a former Great Mills football coach, said community members and local businesses had donated sack lunches and buses for the onehour ride from Lexington Park to the Branch Avenue Metro station. “This is what they need right now,” Foreman said. “This is part of their healing. . . . I think as adults, it’s important they know we have their backs.” Carmen Hill, 17, said she knew

Willey from their fifth-period American Sign Language class, where she was a quiet, diligent student. Hill said she hoped the march would show young people that they have a voice. And who was she hoping would hear? “The people in charge, the people in power — whoever can make a difference,” she said. “If they weren’t listening,” Ponce added, “they are now.” The Great Mills group booed video footage of President Trump and officials from the National Rifle Association. They sang along to Demi Lovato and wiped away tears as a Los Angeles teenager described her brother being fatally shot. They had spent the past week reaching out via Twitter to
students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas in Parkland, Fla., where 17 people were killed last month. The Stoneman Douglas students organized the rally, and the Great Mills kids wanted to find out what they could do to help. Great Mills has been closed since the shooting, but students were allowed to return Friday to retrieve belongings they had to leave behind. Some were crying as teachers and staff members escorted them to classrooms. Great Mills will reopen April 3, after spring break. Going back, many said, won’t be easy. “I’m terrified,” said Jayla Batts, 16, a junior. “It will be hard to walk into the school and act like it didn’t happen.” KATHERINE SHAVER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

The number of riders that Metro reported for Saturday, the day of the March for Our Lives rally. Metro stats are used to estimate crowd size for events or protests, although they do not account for those who arrived by other means. Saturday’s ridership was not a record. Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration holds the Metro ridership record with 1.1 million trips, and it fell on a weekday. The Women’s March — on a Saturday — ranked second, with 1,001,613 riders. Movement’s next move Anguished students take aim at gun laws, vow to send a message in upcoming elections

MARCH FOR OUR LIVES Charlie Goodman looked at the massive crowd around him, the largest youth-led protest in Washington since the Vietnam War era. He listened to people speak about toughening gun laws. They included some of his peers at the Florida high school who have sparked this movement, as well as the 9-year-old granddaughter of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. When she spoke, Goodman was moved to tears. “This is truly a revolution,” said Goodman, a sophomore at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., where 17 people were gunned down last month. “We can really change the world.” The March for Our Lives rallies unified hundreds of thousands of people in cities across the country and have galvanized this movement, Goodman and others say. Now they are vowing to get young voters registered and send a message in upcoming elections. “We have a lot of people who are inspired,” said Kobey Lofton, a student from Chicago who traveled overnight to Washington on Friday with 12 busloads of fellow students and adults. Before the march, Lofton and his fellow Peace Warriors at North Lawndale College Prep High School had already met with the Florida students — young people from different worlds, but both impacted by gun violence. Now they and other students across the country are planning voter registration drives through the fall. Voter registration groups, including Rock the Vote, Voto Latino and HeadCount,

a nonpartisan group that usually focuses on registering people at concerts and music festivals, also helped mobilize teams at Saturday’s marches in 30 U.S. cities and have created a registration toolkit for high school students. “I’ve never felt the energy that I felt,” HeadCount spokesman Aaron Ghitelman said of the registration training that preceded the march in Washington. In a matter of hours, he said, the groups registered nearly 5,000 people, many of them millennials. “We have to force them to
do something,” said Lofton, who was referring to elected officials, including President Trump. The White House issued a statement about the studentled march and also pointed to the president’s support for the Stop School Violence Act, which authorized grants to schools to bolster security and attempts to improve background checks. But Cameron Kasky, a student leader at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, says the current laws and legislation don’t go far enough. The students, he said, are demanding an assault

weapons ban, prohibition of sales of high-capacity magazines and universal background checks. But Kasky said this won’t happen if his peers across the nation don’t get more involved. Goodman said the marches are only the beginning and that he and his peers will be regrouping this week on their spring break. “I considered myself more politically aware than politically active. I was very intrigued with the [last] election,” he said. But something has changed in him. “Now this is something that I must do.” MARTHA IRVINE (AP)
When Tiangong-1 launched in 2011, optimists hoped China’s first prototype space station would be a model for a permanent fixture among the stars. Now, the out-of-control space laboratory is expected to plummet to Earth on or around April 1 in a superheated trail of plasma and space debris. Scientists have known for more than a year that Tiangong-1 would eventually turn into a man-made meteorite after the station stopped responding to Chinese commands in 2016, according to space.com. Only recently have scientists gotten an idea of its trajectory, warning Spain, Portugal, France and Greece that the lab may disintegrate over their skies. Tiangong-1 is spinning around our atmosphere at a speed of about 17,500 mph, taking one trip around the planet every 90 minutes. As it loses its forward speed, gravity will begin to accelerate the craft toward Earth. The friction will rip off anything sticking out of the side of Tiangong-1 and will likely surround parts of the craft in superheated plasma. Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist at Harvard University, told The Guardian that pieces weighing up to 220 pounds could make it to Earth’s surface. But it’s likely that the parts of the lab that survive will crash into the ocean. CLEVE R. WOOTSON JR. AND AMY B WANG

Trump defends $1.3T plan POLITICS President Trump on Sunday defended his decision to sign a $1.3 trillion federal spending bill despite his misgivings, pointing to billions in new funding for the military and national security. Trump said on Twitter from his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida that because of the military funding, “many jobs are created and our Military is again rich.” He said building his signature border wall “is all about National Defense.” Since grudgingly signing the bill Friday after threatening a veto, Trump has faced fierce criticism from conservatives who have accused him of caving to congressional Democrats. The president said Friday at the White House he was “very disappointed” in the package, in part because it didn’t fully pay for his border wall. But Trump said he had “no choice” because the nation needed to fund the military. Trump sought $25 billion for his border wall, but the plan included much less — $1.6 billion for building new sections of wall and replacing older sections. Trump

tweeted Sunday that much can be done with the money and it’s “just a down payment.” He said the “rest of the money will come” and reiterated his assertion that Democrats have “abandoned” young immigrants seeking protections. Trump on Friday noted that the bill failed to extend protection from deportation to some 700,000 “Dreamer”
immigrants due to lose coverage under a program the president himself has tried to eliminate. Trump’s veto threat had put him at odds with top members of his administration and Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan, who urged him to sign the bill. But prominent conservatives have criticized the massive spending plan, warning that it

If trends continue, by 2050 the Americas will have 15 percent fewer plants and animals than now and 40 percent fewer than in the early 1700s. Nearly a quarter of the species that were fully measured are now threatened, said Jake Rice, who co-chaired the Americas report.
If trends continue, there will be no “exploitable fish stocks” for commercial fishing by 2048. Around that time, the region will have lost 45 percent of its biodiversity and about 90 percent of its crucial corals if nothing changes, said Asia co-chair Sonali Senaratna Sellamuttu.
Even though it is the region that the report says is doing the best, 28 percent of the species that only live in Europe are now threatened. In the last decade, 42 percent of the land plant and animal species have declined, said Europe co-chair Mark Rounsevell.
More than 20 percent of Africa’s species are threatened, endangered or extinct, and by 2100 it could lose half of its bird and mammal species. More than 60 percent of Africa’s people depend on natural resources for their livelihoods, said report co-chair Luthando Dziba.

would add to the nation’s debt. Another target for critics was the amount dedicated to fight the nation’s deepening opioid crisis, which killed 42,000 Americans in 2016. Advocates say the record $4.6 billion is not nearly enough to establish the kind of treatment system that is needed. A White House report last fall put the cost to the country of the overdose epidemic at more than $500 billion a year. “We still have lacked the insight that this is a crisis, a cataclysmic crisis,” said former U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy, a Democrat who served on Trump’s opioid commission last year. By comparison, the Kaiser Family Foundation found the U.S. is spending more than $7 billion annually on discretionary domestic funding on AIDS, an epidemic with a death toll that peaked in 1995 at 43,000. States also have begun putting money toward the opioid epidemic. The office of Ohio Gov. John Kasich estimates the state is spending $1 billion a year to address the crisis. (AP)

From Fox to the West Wing Many recent additions to Trump’s staff worked at his favorite network
Craigslist ends its personal ads due to new bill
AP AND GETTY IMAGES
POLITICS President Trump’s favorite TV network is increasingly serving as a West Wing casting call, as the president reshapes his administration with camera-ready personalities. Trump’s new national security adviser, John Bolton, is a former U.N. ambassador, a White House veteran — and, perhaps most importantly, a Fox News channel talking head. Bolton’s appointment was rushed out late Thursday. Bolton went on Fox to discuss his selection and said it had happened so quickly that “I think I’m still a Fox News contributor.” Another recent TV-land addition to the Trump White House is veteran CNBC contributor Larry Kudlow as top economic adviser. Other Fox faces on Trump’s team: rising State Department star Heather Nauert, a former Fox News anchor; communications adviser Mercedes Schlapp; and Treasury Department spokesman Tony Sayegh. The latter two are both former Fox commentators. “He’s looking for people who are ready to be part of that television White House,” said Kendall Phillips, a communication and rhetorical studies professor at Syracuse University. “This is the Fox television presidency all the way up and down.”
Rising stars in the administration — Heather Nauert, from left, John Bolton and Mercedes Schlapp — worked for Fox.
Not joining the team Frequent Fox guest Joseph diGenova, who has accused FBI officials of trying to “frame” Trump for nonexistent crimes, will not be joining the Russia probe legal team because of “conflicts,” said Trump counsel Jay Sekulow on Sunday. Sekulow said diGenova and his wife, attorney Victoria Toensing — also a Fox commentator — would not be prevented from helping Trump “in other legal matters.” (AP)
Trump’s affinity for Fox News is by now well-documented. He has bestowed more interviews on the network than any other news outlet and is an avid viewer.
People close to the president say he thinks Fox provides the best coverage of his untraditional presidency. It also provides him a window into conservative thinking, with commentary from Republican lawmakers and rightwing thinkers — many of who are speaking directly to the audience in the Oval Office. The president’s early-morning tweets often appear to be in reaction to Fox programming. On Friday, for example, Trump tweeted he was “considering” a veto of a massive spending bill needed to keep the government open not long after it was assailed on “Fox and Friends” as a “swamp budget.” The critic in question was
contributor Pete Hegseth, a favorite of the president who has been rumored to be a possible replacement for embattled Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin. In Trump’s Washington, lawmakers and influence-seekers know that the best way to get in Trump’s ear is often to get on Fox. Legislators routinely seek to get airtime when they are trying to push legislation or policy ideas, said congressional aides who sought anonymity. “A year ago, everyone was trying to figure out how to get into the building; now everyone is trying to figure out how to get on TV,” said Republican consultant Alex Conant. TECHNOLOGY Craigslist’s personal ads have been around since 1995, but as of Friday, they no longer exist. (The site’s Missed Connections ads, which make for some of the internet’s best voyeuristic reading, will remain — in the community section.) Last week, the U.S. Senate passed a bill to fight online sex trafficking, which could subject websites to more criminal and civil liability for the content that third parties publish on their platforms. As a result, Craigslist decided to remove its personals section, posting the following statement: “Any tool or service can be misused. We can’t take such risk without jeopardizing all our other services, so we are regretfully taking craigslist personals offline. ... To the millions of spouses, partners, and couples who met through craigslist, we wish you every happiness!” What is a note about happy couples doing in a move made in response to a bill to fight sex trafficking? Well, this is the vast possibility and danger of Craigslist. For decades, it’s been the place to find a roommate, a couch, casual sex or even a spouse. But answer the wrong ad, and there’s a risk of being raped, murdered or falling into a sex-trafficking ring. Critics believe that the bill overreaches, The New York Times reported, and some antitrafficking groups fear the bill will harm voluntary sex workers. LISA BONOS (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Mall fire in Siberian city kills 37, leaves 69 missing
Rebels, civilians evacuate second pocket of Ghouta
Ex-Catalan leader detained at Danish-German border
A devastating fire at a shopping center in the Siberian city of Kemerovo killed 37 people and left 69 others missing Sunday, many of them children, a Russian state news agency reported. The Tass agency quoted firefighters as saying that 40 of the missing at the four-story Winter Cherry mall were children. An additional 43 people were injured in the blaze, the report said. There has been no immediate information on the cause of the fire at the mall, which is about 1,900 miles east of Moscow, but Tass reported that it started on the top floor. The reports didn’t say if the victims died from burns or smoke inhalation. (AP)
Hundreds of Syrian rebels and civilians were bused out of a second pocket of the besieged eastern Ghouta suburbs of Damascus on Sunday after rebels agreed to leave several towns and villages. Close to 900 people were evacuated Sunday from the southernmost of three eastern Ghouta pockets, following some 1,000 fighters, family members and other civilians who left late Saturday, as reported by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The evacuation is modeled on others in which rebels have surrendered territory after years of siege at the hands of President Bashar al-Assad’s forces. (AP)
Five months after going on the run from Spanish authorities, Catalonia’s former president was detained in Germany on an international warrant Sunday after the ardent separatist crossed the border with Denmark. Carles Puigdemont’s capture, aided by Spanish intelligence services, sparked protests in Catalonia’s main city of Barcelona that left over 50 civilians and police officers injured and lead to four arrests. Puigdemont will appear before a German judge today. In Spain, Puigdemont faces charges including rebellion that could put him in prison for up to 30 years. (AP)

NCAA TOURNAMENT | ELITE EIGHT
Wildcats return to Final Four for second time since 2016; Jayhawks win in overtime VILLANOVA 71, TEXAS TECH 59 Coach Jay Wright shared a moment with the Rev. Rob Hagan, the team’s chaplain, on the court in Boston after Villanova’s 71-59 win over Texas Tech. Wright told Hagan he felt blessed. “Why me?” Wright asked himself as his team celebrated their second trip to the Final Four in three years, a logical question in a tournament that already features a beloved 98-year-old nun and has been anything but chalk. Part of the answer could be found in the 44 3-pointers that the top-seeded Wildcats had made in their first three NCAA tournament games, the most by any team over that stretch in tournament history. The other part could be traced back to a
decision by Wright to revamp his team’s defense in early January. “We had to go back to the basics defensively,” Wright said. “We were afraid that we might run out of time.” The clock is still ticking on even though Villanova played its worst offensive game of the year. The Wildcats shot just 33 percent from the field, their lowest since 2015, and it hit just 4 of 24 3-pointers. Star junior Jalen Brunson scored 15 points and was just 4-of-14 from the field. But the Wildcats (34-4) were shouting out defensive switches and sprinting to close out on every shooter, keeping Texas Tech at 33 percent from the field. Villanova dictated pace at the other end with 20 offensive

rebounds, which helped lead to 29 made free throws on 35 attempts. In the end, Villanova won its record 134th game over the past four seasons with a performance that might not have been possible a month or two ago. “It means a lot to us, just that we tough a game out like that,” said forward Eric Paschall, who scored 12 points and snared 14 of Villanova’s 51 rebounds, 18 more than the Red Raiders had. KANSAS 85, DUKE 81 (OT) Malik Newman scored 13 of his 32 points in overtime, and Kansas set up a meeting of No. 1 seeds in the Final Four with an 85-81 win over Duke in the Midwest Region final Sunday in Omaha, Neb. The Jayhawks’ Svi Mykhailiuk hit a 3-pointer with 26 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 72. Grayson Allen saw his fadeaway shot from the lane swirl out of the basket just before the end of regulation. In his final college game, Allen had 12 points on 3-of-13 shooting. Freshman Trevon Duval led Duke (29-8) with 20 points. Kansas (31-7) lost in a regional final as a top seed in each of the past two years, including a loss to Villanova in 2016. (AP/EXPRESS)
Final Four Cinderellas Loyola-Chicago made the unbelievable look comfortable Saturday, cruising to a 16-point win over Kansas State after winning three NCAA Tournament games by a total of four points. The team is now the fourth No. 11 seed to make a Final Four. Here are the other three. (EXPRESS)

SUPER BOWL FELONY?
MLB insists no changes have been made to balls’ cores, but stats suggest a change in 2015.
JEFF GROSS (GETTY IMAGES)
Bennett ready to turn himself in to police
Pitchers still suspicious that MLB is juicing balls Studies: Core materials help fly balls go farther, aid uptick in home runs BASEBALL Last July, Major League Baseball issued a memo to all players as a direct response to the conspiracy theories about the most crucial piece of its product: the baseball. Countering rumblings that balls were “juiced” to generate more scoring, MLB insisted its examination of game balls showed no change. Position players shrugged their shoulders, but pitchers weren’t buying it. They wanted more proof. With the season set to open Thursday, skepticism remains. “I have questions,” Nationals closer Sean Doolittle said. “I think so much of this could’ve been put to rest. [MLB] said,
‘We did a study. The balls are the same.’ And then they didn’t hold a news conference on it. They didn’t make the study available. ... It didn’t entirely pass the smell test.” There were 6,105 home runs in 2017, smashing the old record of 5,693 set in 2000, when steroid use was rampant. An ESPN “Sport Science” study argued that the density and chemical composition of the balls’ cores changed after the 2015 All-Star Game. A FiveThirtyEight study this month said an increase in bounciness and a decrease in air resistance combined to let balls travel up to 8.6 feet farther than before 2015, generating a 25 percent increase in home runs. MLB has maintained nothing was altered and said it will release its own findings once its
study is complete. On the day the MLB memo was sent last year, one Nats pitcher said there were home runs he’d allowed that year that would have stayed in the park in the past. “When we’re talking about 190-pound guys hitting it onehanded off the wall,” another player said. “It kind of makes you scratch your head a bit.” On March 1, Astros ace Justin Verlander tweeted that he didn’t care if the “balls are juiced,” but he doesn’t like “being lied to.” Washington’s Max Scherzer echoed the call for transparency. “If there are changes with the ball, we would like to know if that is a factor or not,” Scherzer said. “...That’s the only thing that I think gets everybody in a hissy fit.” JORGE CASTILLO
After being indicted Friday on a felony charge of injury of the elderly for an incident at the Super Bowl 14 months ago in Houston, Eagles defensive end Michael Bennett plans to report to the authorities, his lawyer said. Attorney Rusty Hardin told The Philadelphia Inquirer that Bennett, who was traded from the Seahawks to the Eagles this month, is out of the continental United States but will turn himself in upon his return. Bennett is accused of injuring a 66-year-old female security guard in a wheelchair when he pushed past her to celebrate on the field with his brother, who played for the Patriots. (EXPRESS)

Kuznetsov shows no signs of rust
After going nearly four years without missing time in Washington’s lineup, Evgeny Kuznetsov had nothing to do but sample press-box hot dogs while he missed three games with a shoulder injury. But the center returned in style Saturday at Montreal, scoring two goals — his 22nd and 23rd of the season — in a 6-4 win. The Capitals visit the Rangers tonight (7:30, NBCSN) and hold a 3-point division lead over the Penguins. (TWP) Ovechkin needs to score six times in final seven games to reach eighth 50-goal season
Wall enjoys first full practice since procedure WIZARDS The practice court had not been this loud in months. On Saturday, squeals and slurs of self-critical profanity came from a single source. When a pull-up jump shot clanked off the rim, the new guy shouted his middle name in disgust: “Hildred!” But when those shots caressed the net, he made eye contact with onlookers and exclaimed, “Nothing you can do with him!” Johnathan Hildred Wall Jr. — the thunderous trash-talker, not to mention the Wizards’ best player — has returned to full participation in practice. Seven weeks after undergoing a debridement in his left knee, Wall completed his first fullcontact practice. He tested his repaired body in five-on-five play and looked aggressive on both ends of the floor, his teammates and coach said. The Wizards have not revealed a timetable for Wall, who is scheduled to speak with reporters this week. Along with the team’s medical staff, he will have the final say on his return. But the completion of an entire practice indicates that he will soon be able to make that call. “He’ll be back in no time,” coach Scott Brooks said. On Saturday, Bradley Beal described practice as “intense,” with Wall ramping up the energy. The Wizards could use a lift. They entered Sunday’s game against the Knicks on a two-game skid with a slim lead for the sixth seed in the East. CANDACE BUCKNER (TWP)

Old pals in a new America
‘Splitting Up Together’
BYLINE (SOURCE) THINKSTOCK AND ABC /EXPRESS ILLUSTRA TION
9:30 p.m. Tuesday on ABC
‘Roseanne’ returns, introducing what might be TV’s first real ‘deplorable’ of the Trump era
TELEVISION Sporting a fresh layer of relevance, ABC’s groundbreaking sitcom “Roseanne” makes an engaging return to life at 8 tonight with its superb original cast (Roseanne Barr, John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson and Michael Fishman) happily intact. After 21 years off the air, they’re older and unhappier and well acquainted with the demise of the American dream. This new “Roseanne,” however, is not just a nostalgia grab. Baked into its leftovers is a reason for return: Our old friend Roseanne (both the fictional character and the iconoclast who plays her) is a Trump voter. It’s kind of genius. “Roseanne” quickly asserts itself as the one sitcom that might stand a chance of humorously and empathetically portraying that bypassed
half of the country that rallied in 2016 behind a candidate who broke the decency barrier and spoke directly to his constituents’ fears of immigrants, terrorists, socialists and special snowflakes conspiring against American superiority. That Roseanne Conner is now a proud “deplorable” should come as no surprise, nor is it a surprise that some of Roseanne’s loved ones oppose her politics. “Have you looked at the news?” Roseanne’s sister Jackie (Metcalf) snaps. “Because now things are worse.” “Not on the real news,” Roseanne replies. And rather than laugh, the studio audience emits a noise somewhere between an “oooh” and a gasp, a sound that indicates that neither Hollywood nor the audience (nor even critics) knows how to go on loving a character who
$28M
A twist beginning “Roseanne” opens its reboot with Roseanne Conner and her husband, Dan, in bed. “I thought you were dead,” Roseanne tells him. “Why does everyone always think I’m dead?” he snorts. They think that because when “Roseanne” signed off, Dan had died. That and other Conner family developments turned out to be fantasy, imagined by the aspiring novelist in Roseanne. H.S.
is that far outside their bubble. And then there’s the rest of the family. Darlene (Gilbert), frustrated by a failed writing career, has moved back home, bringing along her teenage daughter, Harris (Emma Kenney), and 11-year-old son, Mark (Ames McNamara), who likes to wear pastels, skirts and nail polish.
A gender-exploring grandson is one of several ways that the writers have checked off some current boxes, so that “Roseanne” will not only look like a show in 2018 but will also give Roseanne and husband Dan (Goodman) an opportunity to examine their beliefs. These and other family matters (a military and mixed-race family, surrogacy) prove there are many ways to take the show from here. Still, “Roseanne” needs to do more than acknowledge that a Trump-voting grandmother can get along with her liberal-leaning sister and adore her sparkle-riffic grandson. It should courageously allow the Conner family to more tumultuously grapple with the idea that America is coming apart and changing profoundly.
Jenna Fischer and Oliver Hudson star in this new sitcom (based on a Danish series of the same name) as a couple who, after their divorce, decide to continue to co-parent from under the same roof.

Bar none: ‘Good Fight’ redefines legal drama hire,” a partner said. Chaos is afoot in Season 2. (New episodes drop Sundays on CBS All Access.) Shakespeare’s line “kill all the lawyers” is a leitmotif. A disgruntled client runs over his attorney. And an envelope of white powder that sure looks like ricin arrives at Lockhart’s firm (turns out to be baking powder, sent by an associate who wanted to create a diversion so he’d have more time to get his work done). Christine Baranski is stunning as Lockhart, battling enemies within (and outside) the firm, publicly poised yet increasingly frayed. And she

When elegant and savvy lawyer Diane Lockhart micro-doses on psilocybin (aka magic mushrooms), you know “The Good Fight” is spinning the genre of TV legal drama in new directions. But who can blame her? In Season 1 of this “Good Wife” spinoff, the Chicago attorney learned her savings had vanished in a Ponzi scheme. Instead of retiring, she had to job hunt. A predominantly African-American firm took her on. “You can be our diversity
