Wal-Mart Case Reaches High Court More than 1M women involved in largest job discrimination lawsuit

MWb#CWhjĂŠi JWa[ Wal-Mart’s California-based lawyer, Theodore J. Boutrous, said there is no evidence women are poorly treated at Wal-Mart. “The evidence is the contrary of that,â€? Boutrous said. Wal-Mart wants the high court to stop the job discrimination suit in its tracks. The company argues it includes too many women with too many different positions in its 3,400 stores and says its policies prohibit discrimination. (AP)

MWi^_d]jed Christine Kwapnoski hasn’t done too badly in nearly 25 years in the Wal-Mart family, making more than $60,000 a year in a job she enjoys most days. But Kwapnoski says she faced obstacles at Wal-Mart-owned Sam’s Club stores in both Missouri and California: Men making more than women and getting promoted faster. She never heard a supervisor tell a man, as she says one told her, to “doll up or “blow the cobwebs off her make-up. Once she got over the fear that she might be fired, she joined what has turned into the largest job discrimination lawsuit ever. The 46-year-old single mother of two is one of the named plaintiffs in a suit that will be argued at the Supreme Court on Tuesday. At stake is whether the suit can go forward as a class action that could involve 500,000 to 1.6 million women, according to varying estimates, and potentially could cost the world’s largest retailer billions of dollars. But the case’s potential importance issue goes well beyond the WalMart dispute, as evidenced by more than two dozen briefs filed by busi-

ager positions at Wal-Mart, according to a classaction lawsuit that cites what are now dated figures from 2001. The suit contends that women are grossly underrepresented among managers, holding a small percentage of store manager posts compared with more than 80 percent of lower-ranking supervisory jobs held by women but paid by the hour. Wal-Mart responds that women in its retail stores made up two-thirds of all employees and two-thirds of all managers in 2001. (AP)

ness interests on Wal-Mart’s side, and civil rights, consumer and union groups on the other. The question is crucial to the viability of discrimination claims, which become powerful vehicles to force change when they are presented together, instead of individually. Class actions increase pressure on businesses to settle suits because of the cost of defending them and the potential for very large judgments. Columbia University law professor John Coffee said that the high court could bring a virtual end to employment discrimination class actions filed under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, depending on how it decides the Wal-Mart case. “Litigation brought by individuals under Title VII is just too costly, Coffee said. “It’s either class action or nothing. MARK SHERMAN (AP)

Add “Facebook depression” to potential harms linked with social media, an influential doctors group warns, referring to a condition it says may affect troubled teens who obsess over the online site. Researchers disagree on whether it’s simply an extension of depression some kids feel in other circumstances or a distinct condition linked with using the online site. But there are unique aspects of Facebook that can make it a particularly tough social landscape to navigate for kids already dealing with poor self-esteem, said Dr. Gwenn O’Keeffe, a Boston-area pediatrician and lead author of new

times, Facebook pages can make some kids feel even worse if they think they don’t measure up. It can be more painful than sitting alone in a crowded school cafeteria or other real-life encounters that can make kids feel down, O’Keeffe said, because Facebook provides a skewed view of what’s really going on. Online, there’s no way to read body language. Dr. Megan Moreno, a University of Wisconsin adolescent medicine specialist who has studied online social networking among college students, said using Facebook can enhance feelings of social connectedness among well-adjusted kids and have the opposite effect on those prone to depression. Parents shouldn’t get the idea that using Facebook “is going to somehow infect their kids with depression,” she added. LINDSEY TANNER (AP)

NATO will assume command of all aerial operations in Libya from the U.S.led force that has been conducting airstrikes against Moammar Gadhafi’s forces, officials said Sunday. NATO jets on Sunday began enforcing the no-fly zone, Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen announced. Diplomats said the full transfer of authority would take several days. “NATO allies have decided to take on the whole military operation in Libya under the U.N. Security Council resolution,” Fogh Rasmussen said in a statement. “NATO will implement all aspects of the U.N. resolution. Nothing more, nothing less.” (AP)

from the opposition-held eastern half of the country toward Sirte and beyond that, to the capital. Moving quickly westward, the advance retraced the steps of the rebels’ first march toward the capital. But this time, the world’s most powerful

air forces have eased the way by pounding Gadhafi’s forces. Sirte is strategically located about halfway between the rebelheld east and the Gadhafi-controlled west along the coastal highway. It is considered a bastion of support

for Gadhafi that will be difficult for the rebels to take and the entrances to the city have reportedly been mined. If the rebels could overcome it, momentum for a march on the capital would skyrocket. In Washington, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said he could not offer a timetable for how long the Libyan operation could last, as the Obama administration tried to bolster its case for bringing the U.S. into another war in the Muslim world. Obama is expected to give a speech to the nation Monday, and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton defended the administration’s decision. HADEEL AL-SHALCHI AND RYAN LUCAS (AP)

Gangs of young men, some armed with swords and hunting rifles, roamed Sunday through the streets of a Syrian seaside city, closing alleys with barricades and roughly questioning passersby in streets scarred by days of anti-government unrest. Assad The scenes in Latakia, a Mediterranean port once known as a summer tourist draw, were a remarkable display of anarchy in what had been one of the Mideast’s most tightly controlled countries. Syria has been rocked by more

than a week of demonstrations that began in the drought-parched southern agricultural city of Daraa and exploded nationwide on Friday, a once-unimaginable development for one of the Mideast’s most repressive governments. Security forces have opened fire on demonstrators in at least six places, leading to dozens of deaths. President Bashar Assad’s regime has responded by both fatally shooting protesters and promising reform, and a lawmaker said Sunday that he expected Assad to soon announce that he was lifting a nearly 50-year state of emergency. The timing remained unclear. A Sunday evening session of parliament ended with no word of any announcement. (AP)

STROKE RESEARCH PROJECT

A Number of Obstacles in Japan Incorrect radiation figures hurt reactor water removal efforts Jeaoe Mounting problems, including badly miscalculated radiation figures and inadequate storage tanks for huge amounts of contaminated water, stymied emergency workers Sunday as they struggled to nudge Japan’s stricken nuclear complex back from the edge of disaster. Workers are attempting to remove the radioactive water from the tsunami-ravaged nuclear compound and restart the reg-

ular cooling systems for the dangerously hot fuel. The day began with company officials reporting that radiation in leaking water in the Unit 2 reactor was 10 million times above normal, a spike that forced employees to flee the unit. Hours later, TEPCO Vice President Sakae Muto said a new test had found radiation levels 100,000 times above normal — far better than the first results, though still very high. But he ruled out having an independent monitor oversee the various checks despite the errors. Officials acknowledged there was radioactive water in all four of the Fukushima Dai-ichi complex’s

C_ii[Z I_]di TEPCO officials discounted important readings from a network of GPS units that showed that the two tectonic plates that create the fault were strongly “coupled,” or stuck together, thus storing up extra stress along a line hundreds of miles long, an Associated Press investigation shows. That evidence, published in scientific journals starting a decade ago, represented the kind of telltale characteristics of a fault that is able to produce a truly overwhelming quake — and therefore tsunami — like the one earlier this month, creating the nuclear crisis. (AP)

most troubled reactors and that airborne radiation in Unit 2 measured 1,000 millisieverts per hour, four times the amount deemed safe by the government.

Those high airborne readings — if accurate — would make it very difficult for emergency workers to get inside to pump out the water. (AP)

JOBS THAT Checking’s Costly Turns Avoid fees and keep your account’s terms MAKE A with a little vigilance DIFFERENCE

USAID is expanding its mission in Afghanistan, and exciting professional opportunities are available throughout the country. Key Skill Sets Include: • Agriculture • Education • Private Sector Development • Population/Health/Nutrition • Engineering • General Development • Crisis, Stabilization and Governance www.JobsThatMakeADifference.com

Don’t get too attached to the terms on your checking account. In the past year, banks have raised monthly fees, imposed tougher minimum balance requirements and even taken away rewards programs. As part of the sweeping financial overhaul last year, Congress directed the Federal Reserve to set a cap on the fees banks can collect from merchants whenever customers swipe their debit cards. Banks say the Fed’s current proposal could slash the $16 billion they collect each year from stores by up to 90 percent. But even as they scramble to recoup the lost revenue, banks need to be careful not to alienate customers. Here’s how to keep costs down and hold on to the terms you value.

:[X_j H[mWhZi There are already signs that rewards programs for debit cards could become extinct. Chase recently began notifying customers that they would no longer earn points for debit card purchases starting in July. One way to hold on to debit rewards: Check whether the program is still offered for premium accounts. Both Chase and PNC say select customers with premium accounts will continue getting rewards for debit card purchases. But those accounts are designed for those who maintain higher balances.

Overdraw your account? Avoid the costly fees by choosing to decline to enroll in overdraft protection.

Cedj^bo <[[i The “free” checking accounts banks advertise increasingly require customers to meet certain conditions. For example, monthly fees might be waived only if a customer maintains a minimum balance or sets up direct deposit. Wells Fargo, for example, did away with free checking last July. It now offers an account that comes with a $5 monthly maintenance fee. But the charge can be waived if you maintain an average daily balance of $1,500 or set up a monthly direct deposit of at least $250. E-banking is another option banks are pushing. At Bank of America, customers can get free checking if they opt for e-statements and do their banking online. At TD Bank,

customers with basic checking accounts can avoid the bank’s new $1 fee increase, to $3.99 a month, by getting online statements. In other cases, customers need to meet higher standards to avoid monthly fees. For example, Chase says direct deposits on basic checking accounts must now be at least $500 to qualify for a fee waiver. Given all the moving parts, be sure to carefully check any notices from your bank. It could be that some tweaks will be needed to hang onto to that “free” account.

El[hZhW\j 9^Wh][i Overdrawing your account is still one of the fastest ways to rack up fees. Banks charge as much as $39 per violation, no matter how small the charge. And if you don’t realize you’ve overdrawn your account, you could quickly rack up a succession of violations. This scenario can be avoided simply by declining to enroll in overdraft protection. If you’re already enrolled, call your bank to opt out. CANDICE CHOI (AP)

:e =eeZ L_W 7JC0 Customers at Wells Fargo can donate to the American Red Cross Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami Fund through an ATM. After hitting a “Donate to Charity” button, customers can select which account they want to draw from and enter the amount they want to give — from a penny to $249.99. The cap is because Wells Fargo has to collect personal information to report to the Internal Revenue Service for donations of $250 or more. (AP)

Crime Surges Across D.C. Numbers reveal a significant jump in property theft from last year Burglaries in the Dupont Circle area have more than tripled this year. Thefts have spiked about 70 percent in neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River. In Columbia Heights, police are stopping people at night and warning them to put away their smartphones because thieves are snatching them. P roper t y c r i me is on t he upswing across the city in 2011, a reversal from recent years of decline when the city celebrated record low crime rates. The most stubborn is burglaries, up 20 percent, and thefts, which have increased 25 percent this year over the same time last year. Property crime is being driven in part by thieves who are smashing in back doors and shimmying in through unlocked windows, then making off with iPads, TVs, cash and anything else of value. “My mouth literally dropped when I looked at the numbers, said Matt Rhoades, the editor of Borderstan, a news website about the Dupont Circle, Logan Circle and U Street neighborhoods. “The numbers are a disaster. And thieves are making quick work of iPhones sitting on tables while their owners sip coffee. “It’s widespread, Capt. Jeffrey Herold, said acting commander of the second district, which includes Dupont Circle. Harold added that “abundant resources of extra patrols and specialized units have been dispatched to problem areas. Seasoned investigators say it is rare to have an organized, “professional ring of burglars. More

often, it’s a person or two acting on their own, then selling stolen goods to pawn shops. Or, if they sell to a fencing operation, it’s often in exchange for drugs. Burglars will hit an area that is familiar to them over and over, getting more confident with each break-in, until they are caught. Police are trying to help residents protect themselves, saying many of these crimes are acts of opportunity. “If I see you walking down the street talking on phone, I might stop you and say it’s not a good idea, said Jacob Kishter, commander of the third district, which includes Columbia Heights, U Street and Adams Morgan. East of the Anacostia River, burglary emerged as a top crime issue last year. In the area, burglaries and thefts continued to increase in the first months of the year. In the surrounding neighborhoods, wallets

are disappearing from staff members’ purses in schools and groups of opportunists are stealing cars at gas stations. They are also making off with valuables people leave in their cars while they’re pumping gas. It has become such a problem that sixth district Commander Robert Contee stars in a public service announcement warning people to be mindful and lock their doors while they are filling up their cars. Cmdr. Metro plans to install 153 security cameras at the entrances of its rail stations and is also considering recruiting auxiliary police officers to improve security, Metro Transit Police Chief Michael Taborn said Thursday. With serious crimes such as assault and robbery surging on the system, Taborn outlined several anti-crime initiatives for the security committee of the Board of Directors. The cameras, funded by a $2.8 million grant from the Department of Homeland Security, will allow police to monitor station entrances 24 hours a day, Taborn said. They will assist with managing crowds and with capturing evidence of crimes, and will be installed over the next six months to a year, he said. The cameras will be the first to film the exterior of the entrances to Metro’s 86 stations and will take video of sufficient quality for use in identifying crime suspects, Taborn said. “They will be able to see people coming and going,” he said. The current Metro cameras are used inside stations and are decades old, producing low-quality images inadequate for use as evidence. A prototype of the new cameras was recently presented to officials from the District, Virginia and Maryland and was approved, he said.

Metro Board Chairman Catherine M. Hudgins suggested that Taborn also look into recruiting volunteers to serve as auxiliary police to supplement Metro’s 450-member police force, which Taborn says is stretched thin across Metro’s rail and bus network. “There is more need than there

are officers available to patrol the system,” said Kathy Porter, who along with several other board members said she supported the concept. “We live in a region that is rich with law enforcement retirees,” said Jeffrey C. McKay, a board member from Fairfax. “There is a wealth of opportunity there.” Taborn said he also favored the idea and would research how other law enforcement agencies are using auxiliaries. Taborn said that car thefts are declining systemwide but that thefts of small electronic devices such as cellphones, tablet computers and GPS units are increasing. (THE WASHINGTON POST )

Metro Shows Age at 35 New board members seek to fix system, keep subway running MWi^_d]jed Metro’s new guard met for the first time in February, eager to demonstrate that they could repair the region’s grand but aging subway system — and keep it running at the same time. But there was a problem with that, according to the newest D.C. appointee to the 14-member Board of Directors, Tom Downs: midnight to 3 a.m. service on weekends was making it hard to repair

tracks during off-peak, early morning hours. He suggested the possibility of scaling back or curtailing that service, which had long been zealously protected by District board members. Downs was breaking free of convention — and dropping a bombshell. Such thinking will need to become standard fare on the board if Downs and six other newly appointed members are to put the financially strapped Metro, which turned 35 on Sunday, back on track. Their first order of business will be to take hold of Metro’s massive six-year, $5 billion rebuilding program.

“The challenge is how we all guarantee that this system is still around in usable form for the next generation,” Downs said. Metro’s oldest 1000 series rail cars are the same ones used 35 years ago. Metro officials say it is not feasible to retire the cars from the system until replacements arrive in 2013. Former Maryland congressman Michael D. Barnes, nominated to the board this month, was at the ribbon-cutting for Metrorail in 1976 and has watched the system tarnish over the years. “It’s no secret that Metro has a lot of issues,” Barnes said. “I hope I can help.”

The boy was reunited with his mother last week after being placed in foster care. When the parents appeared before a D.C. judge, they argued the city didn’t have a right to take their children, because they are Prince George’s County residents. (AP)

Battering Rams VCU shocks Kansas to cap an improbable run to the Final Four C[dÊi 9ebb[][ >eefi Move over, Butler. Virginia Commonwealth is crashing the Final Four. The 11th-seeded Rams, who didn’t even bother to watch the NCAA Tournament selection show, are heading to Houston, and final No. 1 seed Kansas is heading home after a spectacular collapse. Jamie Skeen scored 26 points as the Rams delivered the biggest upset of the NCAA Tournament, shocking the Jayhawks 71-61 on Sunday to become just the third 11th seed to ever make the Final Four. So doubtful were the Rams of even making the tournament that they watched the Cartoon Network and went out for fast food instead of watching the reveal of the tournament field two weeks ago. Now,

they’re Houston-bound after an incredible takedown of the last No. 1 seed. Included in the many doubters VCU encountererd was one of Kansas’ vaunted Morris twins — Marcus or Markieff. During a captains meeting before tipoff, VCU guard Joey Rodriguez said one of the brothers offered him some parting words: “The run ends here.” “We’ll see,” Rodriguez shot back. The Jayhawks saw all right. VCU players, hoisting their Southwest Regional champion trophy, poured into the temporary

bleachers where VCU’s outnumbered fans sat in an Alamodome that was otherwise colored in Kansas blue and white. As the final seconds ticked down, Skeen heaved the ball from the free throw line and into the stands behind the opposite backboard. His teammates on the bench, who had spent the final minutes with locked arms to hold each other back, finally spilled out onto the court. “We got beat by a team that was definitely better today,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. That upset guaranteed a Final Four without a No. 1 seed. Ohio State, Pittsburgh and Duke didn’t even last to the regional finals. PAUL J. WEBER (AP)

Backed into a corner, Moore got some help from fellow senior Lorin Dixon, and the Huskies responded. Moore had 23 points and 14 rebounds, leading Connecticut to a 68-63 victory after the Hoyas led by seven in the second half of their

regional semifinal Sunday. Connectict will play Duke Tuesday in the Philadelphia Region final with a spot in the Final Four on the line. “Me and Maya decided we didn’t want our careers to end here today,” Dixon said. “That’s just a great feeling. I think everyone wanted to continue the tournament.” While Moore put up the numbers, Dixon was the catalyst for the game-changing run. Connecticut trailed 53-46 with 9:36 left, but responded with a 16-2 run sparked by the 5-foot-4 guard. This was the third meeting between the two Big East teams in the past 30 days. beloved by narrator Natalia, for example, is based on Belgrade’s zoo, a “touchstone” of Obreht’s life. Other themes are more universal. The “deathless man” in Natalia’s grandfather’s tales references German and Slavic mythology. The “tiger’s wife” (a deaf-mute woman ostracized by her village for befriending a tiger) is a character of Obreht’s own invention. But later, Obreht realized the figure belongs in the “beauty and the beast canon”: “She’s in touch with something horrific on a level that others around her don’t understand.” Though Obreht’s manuscript left her hands months ago, she still feels as if she’s in writing mode. Answering questions about her book continues to prompt revelations. She doesn’t mind, though: “It’s this fascinating aspect of all of this; it’s a bonus.” K ATIE A BERBACH (E X PRES S)

Tea Obreht is, undoubtedly, the best expert on her debut novel, “The Tiger’s Wife” ($25, Random House). But she’s also a student of it, learning more about its themes — and herself — each time she discusses the book. The topic of my t h, and “ w h e t h e r i t ’s important to make the distinction between myth and reality,” snuck into the story “behind my back,” Obreht says. The central role of animals in her creative landscape, “was news to me.” And the narrator’s close relationship with her story-telling grandfather, which parallels Obreht’s rapport with her late grandfather, is another detail that she didn’t appreciate until later. “It’s very strange to be in touch with those parts of the book now, in retrospect,” Obreht says. To be sure, the 25-year-old is at the age when truths about yourself are still becoming apparent, when you’re still establishing your own story. So far, hers is one of remarkable success. As the New York Times observed, Obreht’s book has received “the sort of reviews that many writ-

Since some of Tea Obreht’s relatives moved to Washington in 2009, she’s made many trips to the National Zoo to visit (What else?) the big cats. “It’s becoming this joke: ‘Well, we have to go see the tigers,’” Obreht says. “It’s cute in a nerdy sort of way.” K.A.

Our favorite sign of spring isn’t the cherry blossoms or the Kite Festival on the National Mall. It’s Bells Oberon Ale, a wheat beer that’s available only during the warm months. Oberon returns to the bars of the District on Sunday, and the Big Hunt (1345 Connecticut Ave. NW) hosts a release party for the brew on Monday night. Festivities start at 5 p.m. and include Oberon swag and (of course) awesome beer.

The food truck craze seems to us to be sorely lacking variety — after all, is there a beer truck? The Internet says no. Guys, we should totally open a beer truck! This is better than that idea we had about the delivery s’more store. Chinatown Coffee (475 H St. NW; Chinatowncoffee.com) is closing this food truck gap (sort of) this Thursday, with Food Truck Happy Hours, 8o <_edW a trend the business PkXb_d began last fall and that it has brought back for the spring. Every Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., the coffee shop/absinthe hangout will host a different food truck on the curb outside. The series lasts from March 31 to June 2 — at which time, presumably, it will be so humid outside that the food trucks will all pack up and move to Alaska. During happy hour, patrons can buy food at the outdoor cart, then take it inside to enjoy $3 beers and avoid street traffic. The series kicks off with Takorean this week and continues with most of our favorite D.C. trucks, including CapMac and Eat Wonky, in coming weeks.

Author Tea Obreht is still reflecting upon the meaning of her lauded debut novel

The Swedish pop trio try yet again to top 2006’s ‘Young Folks’

Cut Copy releases its otherworldly, evocative new album, ‘Zonoscope’

7bXkc Fh[l_[m What exactly is a Zonoscope? The Australian dance-pop band chose the made-up word as the title for its third album, which is “imagined as a soundtrack to another world,” says drummer Mitchell Scott. “It made sense then that a Zonoscope was the device by which you could see into that world.” Perhaps in that other world, the members of Cut Copy are all celebrities with smash hits constantly booming out of crowded clubs. Instead, the group is a cult favorite in the U.S., after the 2008 album “In Ghost Colours” established the band as one of the most exciting purveyors of lushly intricate and unguardedly exuberant songs. The album,

which was a hit in Cut Copy’s native Australia, draws from ’70s psych rock and disco; ’80s New Romantic; and ’90s radio pop.

PedeiYef[ Cut Copy

Following up “In Ghost Colours” “would have been tough ... if we had tried to re-create that record or use it as a template,” Scott says. “Fortunately, we all share the same idea on what we want to do as a band, which is to continually be inspired by music, so we loved the opportunity to create something new.” With its glimpse of another world “in which differing ele-

ments like electronic and organic components coexist,” “Zonoscope” is crammed with huge choruses and thumping beats, yet is a fuller, more cohesive statement than its predecessor. The result, Scott says, is a mood of “joyous melancholy,” which perhaps sums up the band’s appeal. “Maybe it comes from the fact that we genuinely enjoy what we do and feel incredibly fortunate to make music together. But we are not trying to make music that just has a positive focus. I think there have to be fairly equal parts hope and despair.” STEPHEN M. DEUSNER 930 Club, 815 V St. NW; with Holy Ghost!; Tue. & Wed., 7 p.m., $30; 202265-0930, 930.com. (U St.-Cardozo)

Before the information age, onehit-wonderhood was far crueler. A band would pour all of its magic and passion into a three-minute spasm of melody and then — fssssssst — unceremoniously fizzle away.

=_cc[ Iec[ Peter Bjorn and John

Today, those bands stay together and linger in the blogosphere, hoping that lightning might strike a second time. Cue Peter Bjorn and John, the persistent Swedish indiepop trio blessed and cursed by their 2006 hit “Young Folks” — which boasts the finest whistling in a rock song since Axl Rose pursed his lips for “Patience” in 1989. The trio’s new album, “Gimme Some,” is their third since “Young Folks” ruled the Internet, and it finds the band admirably chipping away. But singer Peter Moren seems to already know the score.

JOHAN BERGMARK

TIMOTHY SACCENTI

John Eriksson, left, Peter Morén, center, and Björn Yttling must be dog folks.

“You can’t count, count on a second chance,” he fumes during one of this album’s numerous taut, power-pop refrains. But Moren’s bandmates refuse to give up, with drummer John Eriksson pounding away on his kit as if hoping to bludgeon a hit out of it. Even if that big lightning bolt never strikes again, there’s still plenty of thunder here to enjoy. CHRIS RICHARDS ( THE WASHINGTON POST )

THE MAIN EVENT: On March 26, they had a “celebratory ceremony” at Andrew’s workplace in the District to celebrate their real (courthouse) marriage the week before. HOW THEY MET: Through a mutual friend, who invited them both to see a documentary about the Iraq War — and neglected to mention that Wendi is a Democrat and Andrew is a Republican. It still worked out. FIRST IMPRESSIONS: “I thought he was cute and had a nice smile.” “I thought she was pretty, but immediately had the impression she was fairly liberal due to her denim ensemble and nose ring.” FIRST DATE: A free performance at the Kennedy Center and drinks at the Tortoise & Hare in Crystal City. HOW HE PROPOSED: On the roof of the Kennedy Center, where they’d first kissed two years earlier.

THE MAIN EVENT: A candlelit ceremony and reception at an Italian restaurant in Tysons II on March 26. Chrysta says they encouraged guests “to wear spandex or elastic waistbands” in preparation for the family-style meal. HOW THEY MET: Through a work colleague “who knew I was smitten with him,” Chrysta says. After the introduction, “I was all smiles for the rest of the day.”

THEIR SONG: “My Wife” by Raheem Devaughn, “because the words expressed what I saw in our future,” says Corey. STUPIDEST FIGHT: Over whether they needed premarital counseling. WHEN HE KNEW: After their first fight. “I wanted to go home, but my heart wouldn’t let me,” Corey says. MAKING IT UNIQUE: To cut costs (they’re paying for the wedding themselves, up front), most everything is DIY. Their favors are bottle cap magnets with photos of the couple inside; Chrysta made guest books with questions for attendees.

THE MAIN EVENT: They’re tying the knot April 2 in a St. Michaels, Md., church, with 150 guests looking on. As Andres sat down, Becky and a friend got up to leave, then returned. “When Becky walked back in, I asked, ‘Did you forget something?’ She said, ‘Yeah, I forgot to give you my phone number.’” FIRST DATE: A week later, he invited her to his friend’s apartment for a card game. HOW HE PROPOSED: On a trip to the Virgin Islands. “I finally realized why he wouldn’t let me use his jacket on the plane and why he had to keep his arm draped over his backpack while sleeping on the beach,” Becky says. “He’d been hiding the ring there.” PET NAMES: “I called him ‘Baby’ for the first year because I couldn’t pronounce ‘Andres,’” Becky says. MAKING IT UNIQUE: They nixed a plan to have the wedding on a yacht (seasickness), but cocktail hour will be on a floating gazebo.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) This is a good day to attempt to do two seemingly different things at the same time. They require the same store of heightened energy. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) When invited to share your mind, you’ll want to do so without hesitation. You have much to offer — much of which is not yet apparent. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) You can avoid a personal disappointment simply by steering clear of an option that is not fully disclosed to you. CANCER (June 21-July 22) What happens behind the scenes is not as important as what occurs out in the open, despite what the experts have to say.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Absent friends will give you reason to rethink your current position on a pivotal issue. The past and the present converge once again. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You may be tempted to embrace a more dramatic style of behavior, but you must also be ready to attract more attention as a result. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You may realize that something you had thought was long forgotten has never left your mind for long. Examine it more closely.

Prince William and Kate Middleton have chosen a traditional multi-tiered wedding cake to be created by celebrity cake designer Fiona Cairns. Middleton asked Cairns to represent about 16 different blooms and types of foliage, each with a different symbolic meaning, a practice that was popular in the Victorian era. (AP)
