HANAMI AT HOME
Have the ultimate cherry blossom experience this season at MGM National Harbor. It always feels a little like cherry blossom season at MGM National Harbor. The iconic trees have been incorporated into the design throughout the resort, from photography in the Lobby Bar, to decor in the Blossom Cocktail Lounge.
with the various massages, facials and body treatments offered, hanami season brings an extra treat: free cherry blossom shea butter cream with any vichy body treatment, a form of hydrotherapy that follows signature marineelement-infused or shea butter-sugar exfoliation.
So, it’s no wonder that during the springtime, when 1.5 million people come to Washington, D.C. to catch a glimpse of cherry blossoms or “Hanami,” the MGM National Harbor creates a seasonal experience like no other. “Residents expect customized cherry blossom opportunities everywhere they go, and we are excited to feature what we have to offer,” said Chris Gumiela, Vice President of Brand and National Marketing at MGM National Harbor. This year’s festivities will be unforgettable, with The Theater at MGM National Harbor hosting Cherry Blast, a premier National Cherry Blossom Festival event blending art, food, an open bar, dueling DJs, Japanese cultural performances and more on March 30. The event will feature a performance and DJ set by five-time Grammy winner, CeeLo Green. While Cherry Blast is a long-running annual feature of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, MGM National Harbor taps into its global reach, working with its team in Japan to produce an authentic and “first of its kind” experience with a menu curated by MGM Japan, said Gumiela. Over the past several years, MGM Japan has helped integrate Japanese arts and culture throughout their resorts in Las Vegas, Maryland, and beyond, and the Cherry Blast is one of their most exciting collaborations yet. It’s the premiere cherry blossom celebration that locals and tourists alike can’t miss. “People travel [from] far and wide to experience the blooming of the blossoms, along with individual events that highlight the region,” said Gumiela. Putting a spectacular spin on an ancient tradition The MGM National wHarbor is the place to be throughout the season, as the resort curates

experiences catering to all types of visitors. “We continue to build upon a robust cherry blossom program here at the resort, and we do so because we see the interest from guests who come to our property during the days of the annual festival,” said Gumiela. To eat and drink As part of the 17th annual Cherry Picks Restaurant Program, for example, Fish by Jose Andres and Lobby Bar will be featuring a new cherry blossom-inspired item every week from March 20 through April 14: a cocktail during week-one, followed by Exquisite Entree and Divine Dessert Weeks. If the cherry blossom mouse with dulcey chocolate cremeux and vanilla sponge doesn’t excite your sweet tooth… nothing will! During Flower Hour at Blossom Cocktail Lounge, a cherry blossom-themed cocktail program will be available weekdays from 12 p.m. until 8 p.m. Vodka lovers can sip on the Massive Cherry Mule or the Cherry blossom Jubilee featuring cherryvanilla syrup, chocolate, vanilla ice cream while gin drinkers might prefer the Spring in Sendai.
Another unique experience can be found at the 15,000-square-foot Conservatory, which features a cherry blossom-inspired installation designed and curated by sought-after event planner and designer Ed Libby. Complete with cherry blossom branches dangling from the glass ceiling, the installation creates “a magical cherry blossom wonderland,” said Gumiela. From unforgettable special events like Cherry Blast to over-the-top installations in the Conservatory, each year brings something new and thrilling to cherry blossom festival season at MGM National Harbor. “We recognize the importance of this annual cultural spectacle for the DMV,” said Gumiela. “We hope people walk away feeling excited and energized.”

page three Three weddings and a protest Jewish couples marry in a ceremony that would be illegal in Israel
Tsion and Aviad Raz share their first dance as a married couple in D.C.
KATHERINE FREY PHOTOS (THE WASHINGTON POST)
THE DISTRICT Three glasses shattered, to the sound of hundreds of cheers and “mazel tovs,” and three couples under three chuppahs kissed the first kiss of their married lives. All three were now legally wed, in the eyes of Jewish tradition and of the United States — a wedding that none of them could have in their native country. “Israel is the only democracy that doesn’t give all Jews the freedom to marry,” marveled Rabbi Rick Jacobs, the head of the Reform movement, which is the largest Jewish denomination in the United States but is marginalized in Israel. To protest Israel’s strict marital law, a policy that some candidates in the country’s upcoming election have pledged to overhaul, more than two dozen American rabbis and hundreds of congregants gathered at Washington Hebrew Congregation in Northwest on Tuesday night for a very unusual sort of political demonstration. A demonstration with a

six-tiered white cake, a hora, a first dance and three newly married couples. Israel does not have any option for civil marriage, explained one
of the organizers of this wedding, Anat Hoffman, who leads the Israel Religious Action Center, a Reform organization fighting for civil rights in Israel.
That means that every couple that marries in the country must go through religious institutions. The Israeli government has granted authority over marriage only to the Orthodox rabbinate — not Reform, Conservative or any other more liberal denomination. And the Orthodox rabbinate’s strict rules bar many secular and Reform Jews from getting married at all. Aviad and Tsion Raz, one couple who married at Washington Hebrew Congregation on Tuesday, cannot marry in Israel because they are gay men. Another couple, Sahar MalkaRabkin and Ilia Rabkin, are Reform Jews who believe strongly in gender equality. They refused to enter into a marriage contract in which Sahar would be treated like her husband’s property. The toasts at the reception were given by Israeli and American politicians. Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., said, “I want to thank you for bringing so much joy to Washington, D.C., because that’s something we’re in desperate need of here. … We are looking forward to a day when everybody on Earth can marry the person they love.” JULIE ZAUZMER (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Student: Wilder harassed me
VIRGINIA A student who worked with L. Douglas Wilder at the Virginia Commonwealth University school named for the former governor reported to the university and police that Wilder sexually harassed her by kissing her without her consent. The woman, Sydney Black, 22, said Wilder, 88, also suggested she could live at his house and offered to take her on foreign trips and pay for her law school in 2017, while she still worked as an office assistant at the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs. VCU officials cited privacy concerns and declined to answer a series of detailed questions. But VCU sent Black a letter formally notifying her that the school’s Title IX office intended to investigate. The four-page letter, dated Jan. 28 and titled “Notice of Investigation,” lays out Black’s allegations, which match her interviews with The Washington Post, and includes a case number. The allegations against Wilder come at a fraught time in Virginia. The governor and attorney general have admitted to wearing blackface in the 1980s, and the lieutenant governor is facing accusations from two women of sexual assault in 2000 and 2004. Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax has said the encounters were consensual and called on law enforcement

to investigate. Wilder, who was governor from 1990 to 1994, is a historic figure in Virginia and nationwide. Named after abolitionist Frederick Douglass and poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, he grew up amid segregation in Richmond. The grandson of slaves rose to become the first elected AfricanAmerican governor of any state. Black, who is African-American, said she grappled with filing a report that could tarnish his legacy and bring negative attention to herself. “I had to choose being a woman over being black,” she said. Wilder did not respond to repeated requests for comment over several weeks, including numerous messages left on his
cellphone and with his assistant. Black said in interviews that on her 20th birthday on Feb. 16, 2017, Wilder took her to dinner to celebrate, gave her alcohol and invited her back to his Richmond condo, where he kissed her. She was a student at VCU at the time, working at the Wilder school as an hourly employee. Three months later, Wilder told Black that funding for her hourly position had lapsed, Black said. She withdrew from college in the fall of 2018 and re-enrolled this semester. “I was deceived,” she said. “I thought he was a different sort of person.” Black reported the alleged incident to VCU in December 2018. The university directed
Black to speak with Richmond Police Detective Eric Livengood. Black told family members of the alleged incident in the days immediately after. Black’s mother, Margo Stokes of Roanoke, and her grandmother, Pauline Carver of Wytheville, said Black called them independently and told them Wilder gave her alcohol and tried to kiss her. Carver said: “He just took a lot from Sydney when he did this because she really admired him, and so did I.” Black said she became depressed as she agonized for almost two years over whether to report Wilder, who is paid $150,000 annually as a distinguished professor at the school. The number of naloxone kits D.C. officials plan to distribute by Sept. 30, a move to dramatically increase the supply of a lifesaving opioid overdose antidote that has been scarce on the streets of a city with one of the nation’s highest rates of drug deaths. Officials have purchased 66,000 kits and intend to buy 10,000 more in the coming months, D.C. Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services Wayne Turnage said Thursday. During the last nine months of 2017 — when overdose deaths peaked in D.C. — the city distributed just 2,396 kits. (TWP)

It wasn’t until the mid-1950s that women were allowed to join the National Guard — as medical officers. It would take another four decades for a woman to rise to the level of a state adjutant general, the top commander of a state’s military forces. Now, for the first time in the nation, a state National Guard — Maryland’s — is led by a command staff of all women. In 2015, Maj. Gen. Linda L. Singh became the first AfricanAmerican and first woman to hold the role of adjutant general for the Maryland National Guard. In June, Brig. Gen. Janeen L. Birckhead took over as assistant adjutant general for Army. In August, Brig. Gen. April Vogel began serving as assistant adjutant general for Air. Then, in December, Command Sgt. Maj. Perlisa D. Wilson became senior enlisted adviser. “I didn’t even realize that it was going to line up this way,” Singh said. “It just so happened that these talented ones started rising to the top.” But the military continues to be a field dominated by men. Before Birckhead was promoted, she was one of about 25 colonels in the Maryland Army National Guard — and the only woman. “What I didn’t want is to have a female leadership team that’s not competent,” Singh said. “They had to be … just as competent, if not more competent, than their peers.” SAMANTHA SCHMIDT

House, Senate override Hogan’s veto of bill that will take effect in 2025 MATT MCCLAIN (THE WASHINGTON POST)
POLITICS Maryland on Thursday became the sixth state to adopt a $15 minimum wage, with both chambers of the Democratic-majority legislature voting to override Republican Gov. Larry Hogan’s veto of a bill he said would cause job losses and hurt small businesses. The House of Delegates and state Senate got the three-fifths vote needed to overturn the veto, fulfilling a promise leaders made at the start of the session and a goal that labor unions and other liberal advocates have worked toward for years. The House voted 96 to 43 for the override, while the Senate vote was 35 to 12. Under the bill, companies with 15 or more employees must pay workers at least $15 an hour by 2025. The legislature agreed to give smaller companies, with fewer than 15 employees, until July 2026 to comply with the law. Hogan said the minimum-wage bill would damage Maryland’s economy, especially in rural areas, and its ability to compete with neighboring states. He suggested boosting the minimum wage — currently $10.10 an hour — to $12.10 by 2022 and refraining

from additional increases unless surrounding states reach a combined average of 80 percent of Maryland’s wage. The minimum wage is $7.25 in Virginia and Pennsylvania, and $8.75 in Delaware and West Virginia. Del. C.T. Wilson, D-Charles, himself a small-business owner, said there are people on both sides of the aisle who are dissatisfied with the bill, which is a sign it is a good compromise. California, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Illinois have all passed legislation to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, along with local jurisdictions, including D.C. and Montgomery County. Man sentenced to life for killing a Muslim teen FAIRFAX Nabra Hassanen’s family and friends spent two years trying to understand her killer: What would possess a man to randomly abduct a teen walking to her mosque, bludgeon her with a baseball bat, rape her and then dump her body in a pond? Darwin Martinez Torres, 25, had never provided a true answer since that horrific night in June 2017. He had never even spoken publicly before he rose at his sentencing for capital murder Thursday clutching a letter. The eyes of Nabra’s father, Mohmoud Hassanen, were wet with tears as he sat nearby in a Fairfax County courtroom. Before being sentenced to eight life terms in prison, Martinez Torres agreed he would finally provide those answers. “I’m very sorry for what I did,” he said through a Spanish interpreter. “I took the life of a person who was very loved. I don’t make excuses for what I did. Nothing can justify my crime.” Martinez Torres has agreed to answer any and all questions posed by Hassanen’s family over the next year, under an unusual provision of a deal reached with prosecutors in November that spared him the death penalty. Her family has long feared Hassanen, 17, of Reston, was targeted because of her Muslim faith. But police and prosecutors said they found no evidence of that, and Martinez Torres’ attorneys claim it is not true. JUSTIN JOUVENAL (TWP)

A new form of Metro harassment
MARLON CORREA (THE WASHINGTON POST)
$3.5B budget that boosts service is OK’d
Creeps use Apple’s file-sharing capability to send unwanted lewd pics to women
TECHNOLOGY On an Orange Line train approaching L’Enfant Plaza last week, a woman sleepily texted with a friend. “I’m so tired,” she complained as she rode during the morning rush hour in a car crowded with other commuters — and at least one pervert. Suddenly, a close-up picture of a penis appeared on the screen of her iPhone, sent to her via AirDrop by someone close by. The feature for sharing files on Apple devices gives users the option to accept or decline a file being sent to them. Unfortunately, it also shows a preview of the file. It was the second time in a month that a picture of a penis appeared on her screen while she was on Metro, the woman said later by email. The first time, she hit decline on her screen over and over. More than 10 times. But the penis kept reappearing until she got off the train and turned AirDrop off. The woman, whose name isn’t being used to protect her privacy, looked around the crowded car for a sign of who’d done it. But she saw no one ogling her or laughing. Just the blank faces of the morning commute.
Hours later, she was still upset. “WHY CAN’T I RIDE THE METRO IN PEACE,” she vented on Twitter, with a photo of what had appeared on her screen. Judging from Twitter, this has happened to several women on Metro in recent months. “I’m on @wmata on the way to work and someone just tried to airdrop me a d--k pick,” a woman named Jenna posted on March 8. “I felt dirty,” she later told the local news site DCist. “It’s not like someone actually grabbed me or touched me, but it’s in my head. My day is now colored by that.” Creepier still, she knew the man had to be within AirDrop’s roughly 30-foot range. “If someone is willing to do that, that’s not a person that I necessarily want to be in a metal tube under the ground with for 20 minutes,” she told DCist. In November, another woman said in a tweet that she actually met the man who’d sent her a photo of his penis. She had just declined the photo, when a man standing nearby asked why she’d rejected it. “I told him I was not interested in his nudes,” she wrote, adding “SMH,” short for “shaking my

head.” The District isn’t the only place where dirtbags are using technology for their perversions. A spate of recent incidents in New York prompted two city council members in November to propose explicitly making cyberflashing a crime, punishable by a year in jail. A problem, say cybersecurity experts like Nathan Freitas of Harvard University’s Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, is that AirDrop can be a convenient tool for creeps. “There is no real record or proof of who the sender was, unfortunately,”
Police: Mo. man pulled over in W.Va. driving 130 mph was heading to White House
he said. Metro didn’t respond to an inquiry about these incidents, but Freitas said there’s not much the agency can do. “AirDrop and other file transfer mechanisms use the same frequencies as standard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, so any attempted signal jamming would also block headphones, smart watches and perhaps even some of the system used by the transit authority,” he said. In the aftermath of the Orange Line incident, a number of people responded to the woman’s tweet letting her know she could change AirDrop’s settings to enable sharing with just her contacts, and not with anyone within range. Or she could turn the feature off. “Yes, my AirDrop should have been turned off, but hey, I forget that it’s even on my phone until the time comes time to use it,” she told us by email. But there’s also an element of blaming the victim in that sort of response. “I shouldn’t have to worry about receiving pictures like that every time I take the Metro to/from work, nor should anybody else,” she said. KERY MURAKAMI (EXPRESS)
METRO Metro’s governing board Thursday gave final approval to a $3.5 billion budget for the next fiscal year that will pay for increased service on two subway lines and other measures aimed at boosting the transit system’s sagging ridership numbers. But, as expected, the spending plan does not include money to expand the subway’s operating hours — to midnight on weekdays and 3 a.m. on weekends — which the District government had pushed for, to help city businesses and their patrons. Federal officials objected to the proposed increase in train operations and threatened to withhold transit funds from the region, arguing that later closing hours would impact rider safety by limiting the time available for subway maintenance. The new spending plan will restore some of the rail service that was cut in 2017 when Metro adopted an austerity budget. Among other increases, Yellow Line service will be extended to the Greenbelt station and all Red Line trains will run between the Shady Grove and Glenmont stations, eliminating periodic turnbacks at Silver Spring. This will double the number of trains at a dozen stations, Metro said. The agency’s goal is to boost ridership — and increase fare revenue — while the rail network continues to undergo substantial rebuilding, which has forced the truncated operating hours. Budget carrier WOW Air grounded its jets without notice in the U.S. and across Europe on Thursday.
Travelers are stranded as Icelandic airline folds WOW Air struggled to make a profit off cheap fares to Europe REYKJAVIK, ICELAND Icelandic budget airline WOW Air collapsed under its financial problems on Thursday, leading it to ground planes and leave passengers stranded across two continents. The airline, a small carrier that specialized in ultra-cheap travel between the United States and Europe, told passengers there would be no further flights and advised them to check with other airlines for ways to reach their destinations. The airline flew to cities
including Washington, New York, Paris, London and its Reykjavik hub. Its bankruptcy, which highlights how difficult it is for airlines to make money from budget flights across the Atlantic, comes after six months of turbulent negotiations to sell its loss-making business. WOW saw deals fall through to sell to its main rival, the national flagship carrier Icelandair, and later to Indigo Partners, an American company operating the airline Wizz. WOW grounded at least six planes in North America that were set to leave late Wednesday from Montreal, Toronto, Boston, Detroit, New York and Baltimore. In Europe, Reykjavik-bound
planes from seven cities — Amsterdam, Dublin, Paris, Brussels, Berlin, Frankfurt and Copenhagen — did not take off Thursday. One airplane from WOW was grounded as collateral by Iceland’s airport operator, which reportedly has a $16 million claim for unpaid landing fees against the airline. Stranded passenger Jamey Fierce, 62, from Toronto, sat at one of the Berlin airport’s coffee shops trying to figure out an affordable route to get home, thinking that maybe he could book a flight via Lisbon. “Not only was the flight canceled — the airline was canceled,” said Fierce with some humor. Walgreens will start selling topical CBD products in nearly 1,500 of its stores in select states, CNBC reported Wednesday. Rival CVS began selling cannabis-based topicals, including creams and salves, in stores in eight states earlier this month. CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabis compound — meaning it won’t get you high. It has been touted as a treatment for everything from anxiety to pain, but research supporting those claims is scant. Regulatory uncertainty around CBD has led larger companies to tread carefully. Because topical products aren’t consumed, they are seen as legally safer than CBD supplements. (EXPRESS)

‘Fake’ Botticelli turns out to be genuine
Art experts in Britain have discovered that a painting long believed to be a fake Sandro Botticelli in fact came from the master’s own Florence workshop. Maduro tries to block Guaido from office CARACAS, VENEZUELA The Venezuelan government on Thursday said it has barred opposition leader Juan Guaido from holding public office for 15 years, though the National Assembly leader brushed off the measure and said it would not derail his campaign to oust President Nicolas Maduro. The announcement by state comptroller Elvis Amoroso, a close ally of Maduro, cited alleged irregularities in Guaido’s financial records and reflected a tightening of government pressure on an opposition movement backed by the United States and its allies. Guaido, who was elected to the assembly in 2015, has received support from dozens of foreign governments. Guaido dismissed the comptroller’s announcement as irrelevant because, in his view, Maduro’s government, which is backed by Russia, is illegitimate. The power struggle between Maduro and Guaido has intensified the sense of crisis in Venezuela, which suffered its worst blackouts earlier this month and then another round of power outages. Schools and public offices were still closed on Thursday, but there was more traffic in Caracas and many people were finally able to make electronic payments after the outages. Both the opposition and the government planned demonstrations for Saturday. JORGE RUEDA (AP)

What’s next for Brexit?
Britain was supposed to leave the EU Friday. It’s still debating how.

ANALYSIS The gods heard Theresa May’s offer to fling herself into the volcano to save Brexit, and shrugged. Naysayers are still denying the British prime minister her exit plan. No one can say what it will take to close this deal — or what will happen to May, who promised to resign, sometime in the future, if the deal is approved. Britain was supposed to be leaving the European Union on Friday. May promised it would happen more than 100 times. That it will not represents one of the great stumbles of any government in postwar Britain. Instead of Brexiteers celebrating independence day, lawmakers will be debating May’s deal, again. But not her total plan — no, only the 585-page withdrawal agreement. That’s the part of the treaty that spells out, in a legally binding way, how much Britain will pay to leave the EU ($50 billion), how the two-year transition will preserve the status quo for trade and travel (no change), and how Britain and the EU will treat each other’s citizens in the interim (nobody gets kicked out of anybody’s country). The withdrawal agreement also includes the controversial “Irish backstop,” an ironclad guarantee to preserve the open border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
Instead of Brexiteers celebrating independence day Friday, lawmakers will be debating May’s Brexit deal, again.
Parliament will not be voting Friday on the second part of the treaty, the political declaration, which sets out the aspirations for the future relationship on trade, security and borders. The hope, from Team May, is that the withdrawal agreement on its own will win over more votes than the overall agreement. In a sign of how Brexit maneuvering doesn’t tend to get very far, earlier the thought had been that the political declaration would sweeten the withdrawal deal. If Parliament approves a withdrawal agreement by the end of the week, the EU is expected to extend the deadline from April 12 to May 22. But Parliament needs to approve both the withdrawal
agreement and the political declaration if it wants to avoid crashing out without a transition period. Meanwhile, protesters demanding a just-get-on-with-it Brexit have been marching toward the capital this week, under a “Leave Means Leave” banner unfurled by the arch-Brexiteer, radio personality and President Trump friend Nigel Farage. These folks at one point numbered a few dozen. That’s compared with the hundreds of thousands who came out to call for a second referendum on Brexit last Saturday. There have now been a number of “meaningful votes” and “indicative votes,” but Parliament has twice refused to pass May’s agreement. On Wednesday, the
House of Commons could not muster a simple majority for any of its own eight Brexit proposals. The very same Parliament members are threatening another go at it Monday. It is possible they will narrow down the options to a mere handful, seeking to know whether the House of Commons might go for a second Brexit referendum or back a “softer” Brexit, say, along the lines of Norway’s half-in, halfout arrangements with the EU. The votes are nonbinding and could be ignored by the government. EU leaders advise that the withdrawal agreement is not open for more negotiation. It is what it is. HIV-positive woman donates kidney
Surgeons in Baltimore have performed what’s thought to be the world’s first kidney transplant from a living donor with HIV, a milestone for people with the AIDS virus — and one that could free up space on the transplant waiting list for everyone. Nina Martinez of Atlanta traveled to Johns Hopkins University to donate a kidney to an HIV-positive stranger, saying she wanted to fight the stigma that too often still surrounds HIV. Martinez said she hopes she has opened doors for other would-be donors. (AP)

POLITICS President Trump said Thursday he wants the federal government to continue funding the Special Olympics, an abrupt reversal from his own budget proposal that eliminated federal money for the charity and sparked bipartisan condemnation. His statement on the South Lawn of the White House came after his education secretary, Betsy DeVos, above, spent three days defending the proposal, most recently at a contentious Senate hearing Thursday. “I just told my people, I wanna fund the Special Olympics,” Trump told reporters. “I’ve been to the Special Olympics, I think it’s incredible and I just authorized a funding.” He suggested he first heard about the budget controversy Thursday morning and that others in his administration were responsible for it. “I have overriden my people,” he said. DeVos said in a statement that she welcomed the reversal, and that she had fought behind the scenes to maintain the funding. An aide said she had been overruled by the White House Office of Management and Budget. The funding was never in any real jeopardy, with key Republicans as well as Democrats vowing to maintain the allocation. But the matter was quickly becoming a political problem for the president. New law makes adultery, gay sex subject to stoning
Truck slams into crowd on highway, killing 18
Starting next week, gay sex and adultery will be punishable by death by stoning in Brunei under a law set to take effect April 3. A strict set of new laws aligning with sharia was announced in 2014 by the country’s sultan, Hassanal Bolkiah, who also serves as the prime minister. But the laws’ implementation has been gradual. “It is highly questionable whether the draconian laws will be implemented. Brunei has had a de facto ban on capital punishment and Brunei does care about its international image,” Brian Harding of the Southeast Asia Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies said in an email. A large truck slammed into a crowd gathered on a dark highway in western Guatemala, killing 18 people, firefighters said Thursday. Health Minister Carlos Soto said that 18 others, including children, were injured and taken to hospitals around the municipality of Nahuala, in Solola province. Local fire department spokesman Cecilio Chacaj said people were apparently gathered at the site on the highway after a person was killed in a separate accident, when the semitrailer plowed into them late Wednesday. The 28-year-old driver of the truck was detained at the scene. A video circulating on social media showed bodies strewn on the roadway while people shout for help. (AP)

HUD accuses Facebook of discrimination in ads Federal charges could cost the social network millions in penalties TECHNOLOGY The federal government charged Facebook with high-tech housing discrimination Thursday for allegedly misusing its vaunted ability to deliver ads with surgical precision to certain groups of people and not others. The civil charges by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development could cost the social network millions of dollars in penalties. But more than that, they strike at the very business model that has made Facebook so rich, and raise questions of whether this could signal more
regulatory pressure to come. HUD said Facebook’s ad-targeting system is fostering discrimination by allowing landlords and real estate brokers to exclude certain people — minorities, non-Christians, immigrants or residents of particular neighborhoods — from seeing their ads for houses and apartments. “Facebook is discriminating against people based upon who they are and where they live,” HUD Secretary Ben Carson said. “Using a computer to limit a person’s housing choices can be just as discriminatory as slamming a door in someone’s face.” In a statement, Facebook expressed surprise over the charges, saying it has been working with HUD to address its
concerns and has taken steps to prevent discrimination, including eliminating thousands of targeting options last year that could be misused by advertisers. The charges were seen as more evidence that Facebook is in the crosshairs of lawmakers, regulators and activists. It is already wrestling with several government investigations in the U.S. and Europe over its data and privacy practices. The technology at the heart of the clash with HUD is what has helped turned Facebook into a giant with annual revenue of close to $56 billion. It can offer advertisers and groups great ability to direct messages to exactly the crowd they want to reach. MAE ANDERSON AND BARBARA ORTUTAY (AP)

Did Trump cross a line into fraud?
Dems say GOP is afraid of full Mueller report
POLITICS When Donald Trump wanted to make a good impression — on a lender, a business partner or a journalist — he sometimes sent them official-looking documents called “Statements of Financial Condition.” These documents sometimes ran up to 20 pages and were full of numbers, laying out Trump’s properties, debts and multibillion-dollar net worth. But, for someone trying to get a true picture of Trump’s net worth, the documents were deeply flawed. Some simply omitted properties that carried big debts. Some assets were overvalued. And some key numbers were wrong. For instance, Trump’s financial statement for 2011 said he had 55 home lots to sell at his golf course in Southern California. Those lots would sell for $3 million or more, the statement said. But Trump had only 31 lots zoned and ready for sale at the course, according to city records. He claimed credit for 24 lots — and at least $72 million in future revenue — he didn’t have. He also claimed his Virginia vineyard had 2,000 acres, when it really has about 1,200. He said Trump Tower has 68 stories. It has 58. Now, investigators on Capitol Hill and in New York are homing in on these unusual documents in an apparent attempt to determine
whether Trump’s familiar habit of bragging about his wealth ever crossed a line into fraud. The statements are at the center of at least two of the inquiries that continue to follow Trump, unaffected by the end of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation. On Wednesday, the House Committee on Oversight and Reform said it had requested 10 years of these statements from Trump’s accounting firm, Mazars USA. Earlier this month, the New York state Department of Financial Services subpoenaed records from Trump’s longtime insurer, Aon. A person familiar with that subpoena, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe an ongoing investigation, said “a key component” was questions about whether Trump had given Aon these documents in an effort to lower his insurance premiums. Both inquiries stemmed from testimony last month by Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen, who told Congress that Trump had used these statements to inflate his wealth — and then sent them to his lenders and his insurers. “Mr. Trump is a cheat,” Cohen said, in describing what the statements showed. Cohen told Congress that statements were given to Deutsche Bank, as Trump sought a loan to buy the NFL’s Buffalo Bills. Since then, Deutsche Bank and

Analysis of his odd financial statements shows omitted debts, overvalued assets
President Trump submitted financial statements that were deeply flawed.
So off it’s ‘humorous’ Kyle Welch, an assistant professor of accountancy at George Washington University, said Trump could be protected by disclaimers that his own accountants added to the financial statements, warning readers that they weren’t seeing the full picture. And in an odd way, Welch said, Trump could be helped by the sheer scale of the exaggerations. They were so far off from reality, Welch wondered whether any real bank or insurer could have been fooled. “It’s humorous,” Welch said. “It’s a humorous financial statement.” (TWP)
another Trump lender have also received subpoenas, from the New York State attorney general. The White House and Trump Organization declined to comment for this report. The Washington Post reviewed copies of these documents for 2002, 2004, 2011, 2012 and 2013 — obtaining them from court
files, from people who received them from Trump’s company, and from Cohen. Cohen also provided copies of documents from 2011, 2012 and 2013 to Congress. Since the 1980s, Trump has defined himself by his wealth, but he has often avoided providing proof to back up his boasts or provided documents that inflated the real values. As president, Trump has declined to release his tax returns, unlike every president since Jimmy Carter. Trump is far from the first real estate developer to inflate his projects or wealth. But there are laws against defrauding insurers and lenders with false information. Financial and legal experts said it’s unclear at this point whether Trump will face any legal consequences. They said it depends on whether Trump intended to mislead or whether the misstatements caused anyone to give him a financial benefit.
POLITICS Special counsel Robert Mueller’s report on Russia’s interference in the 2016 election exceeds 300 pages, people familiar with the matter said Thursday, raising doubts among Democrats about a four-page summary issued by the Justice Department. Attorney General William Barr confirmed the report’s length during a Wednesday phone call with Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. During that conversation, Barr indicated the department would miss next Tuesday’s deadline to provide Congress with Mueller’s complete findings, Nadler told reporters after the phone call. Democrats have complained that Barr’s summary was too pithy to adequately address the special counsel’s complete findings. They have insisted that Barr must release the full report and its underlying materials before anyone can conclude that Mueller’s findings acquit President Trump of serious wrongdoing. The report’s length, first reported by The New York Times, sheds some light on why it is expected to be several weeks still before Justice officials provide the report to Congress. On Thursday, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., chastised Republicans as “scaredy-cats.” “They’re afraid of the truth. They’re afraid of competence,” she said. KAROUN DEMIRJIAN AND

U.S. growth slows in fourth quarter: Commerce report
President suggests feds might look at Smollett case
Wells Fargo CEO to resign amid ongoing scandals
The U.S. economy grew 2.2 percent in the final quarter of last year, the Commerce Department said Thursday, less than the 2.6 percent the government initially estimated and another sign of a slowdown. Both consumers and businesses cooled in the final quarter of the year, and that trend is expected to continue in early 2019. The White House sees a 3.2 percent growth rate this year, but most independent forecasters expect it to fall within the 2 to 2.5 percent range. The first quarter is expected to be sluggish because of bad weather across much of the nation and the partial government shutdown. (TWP)
President Trump suggested Thursday that two federal agencies might look into Cook County prosecutors’ decision to dismiss the false-reporting case against TV actor Jussie Smollett. “FBI & DOJ to review the outrageous Jussie Smollett case in Chicago,” the president tweeted. “It is an embarrassment to our Nation!” The 16-count indictment stemmed from a January report about an attack on Smollett, a gay black man. Smollett claimed two men yelled homophobic and racist slurs. The state’s attorney’s office dismissed the charges against the actor Tuesday and sealed the case. (TWP)
Wells Fargo announced Thursday that CEO Tim Sloan will step down immediately as the bank struggles to address years of scandals related to its alleged abuse of customers. Sloan, a 31-year veteran of the bank, will be temporarily replaced by C. Allen Parker, who has served as Wells Fargo’s general counsel. Wells Fargo is still enduring a sustained backlash from its admission two years ago that it had opened millions of sham accounts that customers didn’t want and more recent reports that it had improperly foreclosed on hundreds of homes and wrongly repossessed thousands of cars. The Nationals’ Victor Robles strayed off third base and was caught in an inningending rundown.
THREE POINTERS
Nats bats start silently METS 2, NATIONALS 0 The Nationals promised greater attention to detail this season. They had no problem with execution on the mound Thursday, but they had issues elsewhere. Washington’s Max Scherzer gave up two runs in 72/3 innings, striking out 12 and walking three on opening day at Nationals Park. But his counterpart was even better. The Mets’ Jacob deGrom threw six scoreless innings, striking out 10 and walking one. The critical difference was in Washington’s miscues and Robinson Cano’s bat. Cano, the veteran second baseman acquired by New York in the offseason, homered off Scherzer in the first. And Cano lofted an RBI single against Matt Grace in the eighth, a slow-motion poke into shallow left, and the Nationals had no answer for either run. “We had some chances early on and didn’t execute,” Nationals right fielder Adam Eaton

said. “That’s kind of how it goes with the talent that was on the mound.” The Nationals, who finished with just five hits, pressed deGrom in the third, putting runners on the corners with no outs, but a strikeout and base-running mistake ended the threat. First, shortstop Trea Turner
went down swinging, on a high fastball in a 3-2 count, when all he needed to do was put the ball in play. Then Robles, the center fielder playing in his 35th major league game, strayed too far off third base when Anthony Rendon hit a chopper to third. The Mets got a force at second

and caught Robles in a rundown and, with that, ended the Nationals’ best scoring chance. The sixth inning also was frustrating for Washington. Turner singled to lead off the inning and stole second. Rendon grounded out to short and Turner then swiped third. But left fielder Juan Soto struck out swinging and Zimmerman flied out to right. A crucial run again was stranded 90 feet from home. Robles acknowledged his mistake. “To be honest, I got a little confused,” he said through a translator. The spotlight also was on Soto. With Bryce Harper playing in Philadelphia, last year’s runnerup for NL rookie of the year hit cleanup. He went 0-for-3. Washington will start Stephen Strasburg and the Mets will start Noah Syndergaard when they resume their series at 1:05 p.m. Saturday at Nationals Park.

Quick hits from Day 1 The major league season opened for all 30 teams Thursday, with late-inning excitement for some clubs but a dreary start for a team just up the road from Washington. (EXPRESS)
3 Orioles true to form Baltimore lost 115 games last year and first baseman Chris Davis set an MLB record by hitting only .168. Fittingly, he went 0-for-3 as the Orioles lost 7-2 at Yankee Stadium.
2 Drama in Milwaukee The Brewers began the season with flair: Lorenzo Cain soared above the wall in center to rob Jose Martinez of a tying HR for the final out of a 5-4 win over St. Louis.
1 Bryce cheered, booed Bryce Harper got a warm ovation in his first at-bat in Philadelphia. Then, after a second strikeout in an 0-for3 day, he got booed. The Phillies beat the Braves 10-4.

Blue bloods and up-and-comers East Region semifinals bring diverse teams to Capital One Arena
Kerry Blackshear Jr. and No. 4 seed Virginia Tech will face Zion Williamson and top-seeded Duke at 9:39 p.m. Friday at Capital One Arena.
AP AND GETTY IMAGES
EAST REGION Zion Williamson went to Duke for its winning history. Kerry Blackshear Jr. went to Virginia Tech to create one. Coach Tom Izzo feels the need to explain why Michigan State hadn’t been in the Sweet 16 in four years. Interim coach Tony Benford is excited LSU is back for the first time in 13 years. The teams left in the East Region are the top four seeds, but come to Capital One Arena in Washington with very different reputations and expectations. Top-seeded Duke and secondseeded Michigan State are expected to compete for national titles every season, while thirdseeded LSU and fourth-seeded Virginia Tech are relative newcomers to this stage. When LSU faces Michigan State at 7:09 p.m. Friday, it’ll be the Tigers’ first game beyond the NCAA Tournament’s opening weekend since 2006. The Spartans have made eight Sweet 16, four Elite Eight and three Final Four appearances in that time. When Virginia Tech faces Duke at 9:39 p.m., it’ll be the Hokies’ first Sweet 16 game since the

field expanded in 1985. Duke has been in the Sweet 16 eight times in the past 11 years and won the national title twice since 2010. “Each and every person came in here to this program to help build a house,” said Blackshear, a junior forward. “Hopefully we
come out on top of this game and we continue to build something with this program.” These are programs in very different places for now. LSU is in the midst of an FBI corruption investigation and coach Will Wade has been suspended, with
Benford in charge for now. MSU is trying to reach Duke’s gold standard for March Madness. “Those expectations are a privilege and an honor to have,” Izzo said. “You work all your life to get your program to the point where people are expecting you to be some certain places.” Williamson, fellow freshman star R.J. Barrett and the Blue Devils have had to deal with being the team coach Mike Krzyzewski said everyone feels they have to beat to win. Virginia Tech already beat Duke once, but without point guard Justin Robinson and while Williamson was out. Still, that was good for a jolt of confidence. “Three out of four years here at Virginia Tech we’ve beaten Duke,” Robinson said. “... I think we’re going to be ready for whatever is going to come for us to end the game.” LSU is trying to disregard the questions around the program and focus on a matchup of two of the nation’s best point guards in Tremont Waters versus Michigan State’s Cassius Winston. “I feel like we’re just as good as every team here,” LSU guard Marlon Taylor said. “We’re not up and coming. We’ve been doing this the whole season — people are just now noticing us.” STEPHEN WHYNO (AP)
DRUG TEST NEGATIVE
Hokies coach says Outlaw will face Duke Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams said Thursday that senior swingman Ty Outlaw — who was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana last week — will face Duke on Friday night in an East Region game at Capital One Arena. Williams said the team learned of Outlaw’s arrest Monday, after which he took a drug test by an outside agency that was negative. “He’s been transparent not only with me but with all the authorities involved,” Williams said. Outlaw, above, 6-foot-6, is a good defender and rebounder and is among the nation’s leading 3-point shooters at 45.6 percent. (AP)

LSU beat Maryland in the second round despite shooting 7-of-24 on 3s. The Tigers’ opponent in D.C. has one glaring weakness: turnovers. For example, the Spartans committed 22 turnovers on 65 possessions (34 percent) against Minnesota in the second round. LSU has a 12 percent steal rate, sixth-best in the country.
UNC doesn’t emphasize denying 3-pointers — 43 percent of its opponents’ attempts this season were beyond the arc. The Tigers could take advantage: Led by guard Bryce Brown they have scored 44 percent of their points on 3s this season (seventh in the country). Brown makes 40.8 percent of his 3s.
The slowpoke Hokies generate just 64 possessions per game (332nd out of 353 Division I programs) while forcing opponents to use, on average, 19 seconds on the 30-second shot clock. The Blue Devils aren’t great at the end of the shot clock because their long-range shooting isn’t a strength.
The Cougars limit opponents to a 47 percent field goal rate around the basket (97th percentile) and a nationwide-low effective field goal rate of 37 percent on all jump shots, two possession types that account for 80 percent of Kentucky’s offense in the half court. NEIL GREENBERG

Olbermann apologizes for tweet against hunter
Pats’ D-coordinator Schiano quits after 2 months on job
Interim manager of Man U gets 3-year contract to stay
ESPN’s Keith Olbermann has apologized for his tweet criticizing a Mississippi wild turkey hunter who had bagged a rare white gobbler. Olbermann called the hunter “a pea-brained scumbag” and added that “we should do our best to make sure the rest of his life is a living hell.” Olbermann acknowledged Wednesday night that he had crossed the line. “I am an opponent of trophy hunting and remain so,” he tweeted, “but nobody should feel threatened ... so I unreservedly apologize.” Twitter had removed the original tweet for violating its standards. ESPN said it spoke to Olbermann. (THE WASHINGTON POST)
Greg Schiano has stepped down as defensive coordinator of the Patriots, less than two months after taking the job. The Patriots, who never announced the hiring of the former Tampa Bay and Rutgers head coach, confirmed his departure Thursday. Schiano, 52, said he needs to “spend more time on my faith and family.” Schiano went 11-21 in two seasons with the Bucs and spent two years as the defensive coordinator at Ohio State before he was announced in late 2017 as the new coach at Tennessee. But the school backed out of the deal after a backlash over Schiano’s connection to the Penn State sexual abuse case. (AP)
The interim manager of Manchester United, 46-year-old Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, received a three-year contract Thursday to stay on the job. In his 99 days as interim manager, the Norwegian restored the team’s identity and swagger, lifted the gloom lingering from the end of the Jose Mourinho era and kept United on course to win the Champions League. Solskjaer, who played for the club from 1996 to 2007, became the first United manager to win his first eight games in charge and tied the record of Carlo Ancelotti at Chelsea and Pep Guardiola at Manchester City by winning his first six Premier League games. ‘The Mustang’ Public service announcement: If you try to adopt an elephant, it will not be as cute as Dumbo.
KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY | THE REELIST
Finding new life: ‘Dumbo’ benefits from human touch Elephants are my fifthfavorite animal, after seals, sea lions, penguins and otters. So, given the pachydermic trauma featured in the 1941 “Dumbo,” it was with much trepidation that I saw the current one. My hesitance also came from this being a remake in an ocean of unnecessary remakes that will continue to wash over us, saturating our lives, brains and souls with unending waves of pointless cinema, made with money and resources that could be used to fund new and innovative films made by new and innovative filmmakers rather than funnel more money into the pockets of Mickey Mouse so he can Mouseke-build himself a new Mouseke-mansion or whatever. Of course, through the
course of the movie, Dumbo is sad — but he’s not the only one. Former trick rider Holt (Colin Farrell) has returned from World War I to the traveling circus that was his home, though now he’s missing his left arm. He’s also missing his wife, who died of the flu while he was gone. All that’s left are his children, Milly and Joe (Nico Parker and Finley Hobbins), who have seen more loss than little kids should. Soon after Holt’s return, Mrs. Jumbo, the circus’ star elephant, gives birth to a large-eared calf; after an accident, the two elephants are separated. The kids discover Dumbo can fly, making him an attraction so attractive that V.A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton, dashing in silver hair and making some really weird vocal choices) comes to bring the circus to a permanent home at
THR: Angelina Jolie in talks to star in Marvel’s “The Eternals”
his Coney Island amusement park. The sometimes-chaotic story inflation makes some sense; the original movie is only about an hour long, and audiences aren’t going to pony up $15 plus popcorn for that. The remake keeps some of the original elements — “Baby Mine” is still in there and still crushing — but it’s mostly its own movie, primarily because instead of taking place in the animal world, the action is more about the humans who surround Dumbo. In the original “Dumbo,” the circus folk are largely in the background; here they step right into the spotlight (hehe, circus jokes). The children’s loss of their mother mirrors Dumbo’s loss of his own. Holt’s disability, like Dumbo’s ears, is marked as something shameful and marginalizing. It’s
‘Dumbo’ (PG, 112 min.) DIRECTOR: Tim Burton STARS: Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Eva Green, Alan Arkin IN A NUTSHELL: Returning from World War I, a circus star is tasked with caring for a newborn elephant that develops the ability to fly.
an interesting shift, because it clearly shows a variety of responses when humans face a vulnerable creature. Some befriend it. Some protect it. Some mock it. Some exploit it. This “Dumbo” makes it so that loss and pain aren’t limited to a baby elephant with glossy eyes and killer lashes. It includes its audience — kids especially — in a more intimate way by including human characters that have real depth. (Well, kind of. Ehren Kruger’s script isn’t great. Also, director Tim Burton has dialed down the Tim Burton-ness of his visuals to the point of the film not being instantly recognizable as a Burton film. Whether that’s good or bad is up to you.) “Dumbo” plainly shows kids the possible depths of human cruelty, callousness and materialism. But it also shows that pain is survivable and that heroes who are willing to stand up for the little guy surround them. In the 1941 movie, the heroes were talking mice, and crows that were basically codified racism in animated form. Here, kids can see that heroes can look just like us. A promising debut by writer-director Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, this film begins as a herd of wild horses are taken to a prison in the Nevada desert. There, an inmate named Roman (Matthias Schoenaerts) forms a bond with a mustang while taking part in a program training the wild horses. Luckily, the film overcomes its most predictable story beats thanks to its intimate, unfussy style. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)
‘The Brink’ Unrated, 90 min.
This documentary is just the kind of lucid, observant, chillingly contradictory portrait that former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon deserves. Filmed for about a year from the fall of 2017 through last year’s midterm elections, this verite-style dive deep into Bannon’s psyche and practice may be the most candid depiction of the man we can hope for. Heroes save ‘Hotel Mumbai’ Based on true events, the film tells a difficult but worthwhile story
Dev Patel’s waiter looks for a way to safety as chaos reigns around him.
BLEECKER STREET PHOTOS
FILM REVIEW In many ways, “Hotel Mumbai” feels like “The Towering Inferno” for the new millennium: an old-fashioned disaster flick, set in what one character calls a “crazy elegant” hotel — except here the conflagration is set off not by an electrical defect, but by the flames of sectarian animus and geopolitical division. It’s also, more or less, a true story, with a gripping — at times, almost too gripping — screenplay by director Anthony Maras and John Collee, who based their fictionalized telling of the events on the documentary “Surviving Mumbai.” The new movie concerns the 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai, in which militants from Pakistan laid siege to several sites in India’s largest city, including the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, where most of the film takes place. In the film, the attackers — members of the Lashkar-eTaiba Islamist militia — are never identified, yet there’s no lingering mystery about their anti-India sentiments. As the film opens, a group of sullen men approach Mumbai by raft, with their leader, heard only by phone, urging his companions to cast their eyes toward the city’s skyline and “look at what they stole from you.” Considering the long-standing tensions between the predominantly Muslim nation of Pakistan and its neighbor, the

predominantly Hindu India, it isn’t hard to do the math. Indians will be the primary targets, along with moneyed Westerners, whose prominence the terrorists hope to use to draw attention to their cause. For the purposes of the story, a single couple embodies this central conflict, and
‘Hotel Mumbai’ (R, 123 min.) DIRECTOR: Anthony Maras STARS: Dev Patel, Armie Hammer, Nazanin Boniadi, Jason Isaacs IN A NUTSHELL: A waiter and chef display heroism in the face of terror in this film about the 2008 attack on the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.
one of its contradictions: David (Armie Hammer) and his wife, Zahra (Nazanin Boniadi), an affluent young couple with a new baby and a nanny (Tilda Cobham-Hervey). For a good long time, “Hotel Mumbai” is a ticktock of horrific violence. The callousness with which the terrorists operate is palpable and conveyed with a degree of verisimilitude that borders on sadism. “Hotel Mumbai” is a clockwork thriller, but man, is it hard to watch. As it turns out, the film’s heroes are not actually David and Zahra, but rather the hotel’s staff, embodied by a stoic Sikh waiter (Dev Patel, playing a composite character) and the hotel’s chef, Hemant Oberoi (Anupam Kher), who leads a cadre of other hospitality workers to help save their guests. “The guest is God,” Oberoi reminds a group of employees who volunteer to stay behind and help. It’s a line both tailor-made for an action movie — one in which the heroes don’t wear capes but name tags and aprons — and unsettlingly classist. Deep down, the makers of “Hotel Mumbai” don’t really care what started the attack. They’re more intrigued by who stopped it — or at least who helped some of its victims get through it alive. They’re not always the people whose lives, and whose sacrifices, we think about when we stay in fancy hotels. But there’s a quiet radicalism in making a movie that is, at its heart, all about them. Deadline: Denzel Washington, Frances McDormand set for Joel Coen’s “Macbeth”
McConaughey is the perfect ‘Beach Bum’ FILM REVIEW Matthew McConaughey is at his dirtbag finest as a good-time Charlie stoner-poet named Moondog in Harmony Korine’s “The Beach Bum,” a bizarre and transfixing carnival of vulgarity and vice. Moondog is a giggling burnout who you suspect might be homeless, or at least veering toward that state. So it comes as a surprise to learn that he has a wife, Minnie (Isla Fisher), a grown daughter (Stefania LaVie Owen) and a waterfront mansion back in Miami. “I forgot how rich we are,” Moondog opines to Minnie. She is having an affair with a wealthy weed dealer named Lingerie (Snoop Dogg). But for some reason she loves her loser husband. Moondog is a genius, we’re told, and a celebrated poet whose agent (played by a very over-the-top Jonah Hill) is itching for a follow-up. When things go awry and he loses everything, it’s his typewriter that he brings along with him. In some ways it’s the part McConaughey was born to play. Whether or not that’s a good thing for him, or unsuspecting audiences, is unclear, but McConaughey gives and bares (nearly) all for this film. And it mostly works. Korine nearly pulls off an incredible trick, having made a flagrant and aggressively R-rated celebration of South Florida hedonism and depravity that’s also kind of funny and even, sometimes, oddly sweet and charming. EXPECTED RELEASE: Aug. 2
EXPECTED RELEASE: May 10
SUMMARY: The live-action version of the show beloved by both children and their parents who just need 30 minutes to get dinner on the table, PLEASE, looks like a Lara Croft game except our heroine has less in the chest. Teenage Dora has to save her parents, survive high school and manage her pet monkey. KRISTEN PAGE-KIRBY (EXPRESS)
SUMMARY: Mel Gibson’s career picks up right where it would be had he not gone on various verbally abusive rants as he stars as James Murray, the man behind the Oxford English Dictionary. Sean Penn plays William Minor, the man who provided an absolute slew of entries. He had a lot of time on his hands, being in an insane asylum and all. K.P.K.

@AMANDAMULL, tweeting after an Indiana mom went viral for publishing an op-ed about leggings in The Observer, the student newspaper of the University of Notre Dame. The woman, Maryann White, wrote: “I’m just a Catholic mother of four sons with a problem that only girls can solve: leggings.” She said she was “ashamed” for young women she saw attending Mass wearing leggings. Her letter sparked many responses online. “If your son can’t handle women in form-fitting pants, he might not be ready for college,” @JackieOsGlasses tweeted.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.
