THE DISTRICT Brotherly love turned Mike Shirazi into a grocer. Shirazi, 72, had been trained as an engineer, but when his brother Jacob, ailing from back surgery, needed help running the small D.C. store the family had recently purchased, he took a three-month leave of absence. Then a six-month one. Thirty years later, Shirazi is still a grocer — until Friday, when the family will close the doors to the Brookville Super Market for the last time. Customers of the Cleveland Park market — which opened in late 1987 — have come to think of it as more than just a store. “In some ways, Brookville has been the anchor for that strip,” said Mark Rosenman, a Cleveland Park resident since 1998 who shopped at the market at least once a week. He recalled fumbling for his wallet — forgotten at home — at the cash register several years ago, only to see the store manager reach into his own pocket and pay for the groceries,

Last week, the store’s shelves were starting to look empty — but most were still laden with frozen beef kreplach, rows of cereal and oatmeal, and neatly arranged vegetables under bright white fluorescent lights. Mike Shirazi, soft-spoken at 72, said the decision to close was a difficult one, but he and Jacob

That left Mike, who realized it was time for him to go, too. He plans on traveling to Europe and catching up on reading. “We decided it’s time to hang up,” he said. “Being over 70 years old, then you would feel tired, and you would know it is time to stop and smell the roses.” Sh i ra z i s a id h is fa m i ly searched for another market to replace Brookville, and the local Streets Market chain will lease the roughly 7,000-square-foot space from them. It will open in about two months. “We needed to have someone who would take care of the community,” he said. “We see they are sort of upscale and nice and would match the people of Cleveland Park.” Campbell Burns, Streets’ vice president of business development, promised to continue what Brookville started — down to keeping much of the same staff, some of whom have worked for the Shirazis for decades. “We just want to carry on their legacy,” Burns said. CRIME Adnan Syed, known to many as a subject of the popular podcast “Serial,” has been granted a new trial almost 20 years after he was convicted of killing his girlfriend and sentenced to life in prison. Syed was sentenced in 2000 for the murder of his Woodlawn High School classmate Hae Min Lee, whose body was found in Baltimore’s Leakin Park. A Baltimore circuit court vacated that conviction in 2016, citing the “ineffective assistance” of Syed’s former attorney. On Thursday, the Maryland Court of Special Appeals upheld the ruling, granting him a new trial. “Serial” devoted its first season to the crime and the conviction, as host Sarah Koenig and her producers interviewed a number of Syed’s friends and family members, sparking a national debate over whether he was innocent or guilty. In Thursday’s 2-1 ruling, the appeals court panel agreed with Syed’s current lawyer, Justin Brown, that his trial lawyer was ineffective for failing to investigate a potential alibi witness, Asia McClain, who said she saw Syed at a public library at the time the state claimed Syed killed Hae. The panel said in its written

decision that if testimony from McClain had been presented to the jury, it would have “directly contradicted the State’s theory of when Syed had the opportunity and did murder Hae” and could have created reasonable doubt in at least one juror’s mind and led to a different outcome. It was not immediately clear whether prosecutors plan to appeal the ruling to the state’s highest court. Brown tweeted the message “WE WON THE APPEAL” on Thursday, with the hashtag #freeadnan. Also on Thursday,

Brown held a news conference from his Baltimore office. “If the state is so confident in their case, and if they’re so confident that Syed is guilty, they should just try the case. We’re ready to try the case,” Brown said. Brown said he had spoken with Syed after the opinion came out. “He asked me to convey his deep gratitude and thanks from the bottom of his heart [to] all those people who have supported him this long and all those people who have believed in him,” Brown said. For at least two weeks, a man with a British accent has been running up tabs at upscale D.C. bars and ditching the bill. He’s pulled his schemes at the Willard InterContinental hotel and the Ritz-Carlton in the West End — where police said he topped off a dinner of grilled octopus and lamb with a $156 bottle of cabernet sauvignon and a $1,200 shot of a rare 34-year-old single-malt Irish whiskey. An informal network has kept tabs on the man, and photos of him are circulating. Police have arrested a suspect, Nicholas James Cooper, 21, three times, yet he has routinely been released pending an April 12 court date. Monday evening, police arrived too late after the man was accused of skipping out on $500 of wine and oysters at the Hay-Adams. (TWP)

Russia responds to U.S., kicks out 60 diplomats

‘ACOUSTIC SHOCK’

Opera liable for violist’s hearing loss

MOSCOW Russia will close the U.S. Consulate in St. Petersburg and kick out 60 American diplomats in response to Monday’s coordinated expulsion of Russian diplomats from the U.S. and a number of other countries, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Thursday. The move continues an ongoing escalation of tit for tat between Moscow and the West that began in early March with the alleged poisoning of a former Russian double agent on British soil with a Soviet-designed nerve agent. American officials said Thursday that another round of measures might be coming. “We reserve the right to respond,” State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in Washington. “Russia should not be acting like a victim,” she said, calling Moscow’s move “regrettable” and “unwarranted.” U.S. Ambassador Jon M. Huntsman Jr. was summoned Thursday night to the Foreign Ministry, where Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov informed him of Russia’s response. further moves, possibly against Russian assets abroad. Huntsman told the local RBC news outlet earlier Thursday that such a move was “possible.” According to a Foreign Ministry readout of Huntsman’s meeting with Ryabkov, the U.S. ambassador was rebuked for the remark and warned that such a move would have the “gravest consequences for global stability.” In addition to the expulsion of Russian diplomats Monday, the United States closed Russia’s consulate in Seattle — claiming it to be a hub of Russian intelligence activity and citing its proximity to a major U.S. nuclear submarine base. In a landmark case, Britain’s High Court of Justice ruled Wednesday that the Royal Opera House is liable for the injury of a former viola player who suffered career-ending “acoustic shock” during a 2012 rehearsal. The musician, Chris Goldscheider, 45, said that he experienced devastating and permanent hearing loss, with vertigo, nausea and intense pain, caused by a blast from the orchestra’s 18-member brass section. In 2014, he was forced to retire. The ruling that the opera house failed to protect the musician could have farreaching consequences for the British music industry. (TWP)

Sessions denies calls for second special counsel POLITICS Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Thursday rebuffed — for now — a call from GOP leaders to appoint a second special counsel to look into the FBI’s handling of its most high-profile probes and announced that he has asked the U.S. attorney in Utah to spearhead a broad review. Sessions made the revelation in a letter to three key Republican leaders in the House and Senate who have called on him to appoint a second special counsel, noting that Justice Department regulations call for such appointments only in “extraordinary circumstances,” and that he would need to conclude that “the public interest would be served by removing a large degree of responsibility for the matter from the Department of Justice.” He asserted that the department has previously tackled high-profile and resource-intensive probes, and revealed he had named U.S. attorney John W. Huber to lead a review of the topics that the legislators had requested he explore. Those topics include aspects of the Russia investigation and several matters related to Hillary Clinton and her family’s foundation. In a Fox News interview earlier this month, Sessions said the review was being led by a person outside of Washington, but had not revealed the name of that person until Thursday. MATT ZAPOTOSKY (AP)

Service dogs for PTSD? Researchers and Veterans Affairs are skeptical that K9s actually help those suffering In return home, Malala flooded with emotions

O’Haire emphasizes the study’s “preliminary” nature and the need for more research. “There is so much political agenda behind this topic,” she says. Other investigations are underway, but the VA’s study remains the biggest study in scope — though it’s also the one that has drawn the most criticism. After a rocky start in 2011, the project was halted and redesigned to include VA-hired dog trainers and a control group of veterans provided with emotional support dogs. All 220 subjects were enrolled and matched with pooches by late 2017. Initial results are expected in 2019. Officials insist they’re doing the kind of rigorous, controlled research that the field has been lacking. “We really want to know the answer,” says Patricia Dorn, director of the VA’s rehabilitation research and development service. “We want to know for the veterans and the public at large.”

ISLAMABAD As Malala Yousafzai spoke of coming home to Pakistan for the first time since being shot by the Taliban five years ago, the emotions flooded back. The 20-year-old Nobel laureate returned Thursday for a four-day visit. She told an audience in the prime minister’s office of how she had longed to be back in Islamabad or Karachi even as she promoted her message of girls’ education around the world. “I was always dreaming for the past five years, that I can come to my country, whenever I was traveling abroad,” she said, to applause. “Finally, I am here.” In October 2012, Yousafzai was shot in the head by a Taliban assassin who had jumped inside her school van and yelled, “Who is Malala?” She had been targeted for speaking out on education in her home of Mingora. Since her attack and recovery, Yousafzai has led the Malala Fund, which she said has invested $6 million in schools and to provide books and uniforms for schoolchildren. She became the youngest person to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, in 2014. Her first meeting in Pakistan was with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. While no one said whether she or Abbasi initiated her brief return, the government touted it as a sign the violent militancy has been defeated in the Islamic nation. Abbasi praised Yousafzai for her sacrifices and activism. MUNIR

HEALTH Adam Fuller credits a simple, one-word command — and a black Lab mix named J.D. — with helping to save his life. “Cover,” he tells J.D. The dog calmly walks to Fuller’s right, then sits facing backward. Were someone coming up from behind, he’d wag his tail. The signal quells the sense of threat that plagued Fuller after serving in Afghanistan, which at one point had him futilely popping medications and veering toward suicide. “I wouldn’t be here without him,” says Fuller, a 29-year-old K9s for Warriors graduate. Every month, a new cycle of training begins with veterans at K9s for Warriors, a 7-year-old nonprofit in Florida that is one of dozens of private organizations that offer “psychiatric service” dogs to address the military’s mental health crisis. While the dogs paired with veterans with PTSD are commonly trained to wake them from nightmares and to “block” the space between their owner and another person, advocates also laud their ability to soothe a panicking vet and provide companionship. “Being able to go to a store — and not just hate it and drop everything and walk out — is phenomenal,” Fuller says. Yet even as success stories allow these groups to briskly expand their work, their approach faces growing scrutiny from researchers and debate among veterans groups, politicians and the Department of Veterans Affairs. At issue is whether the dogs truly help, what they should be trained to do and who should pay for them. For more than 15 years, the VA has covered veterinary care for service dogs that assist veterans

Adam Fuller, 29, scratches his dog J.D. before leaving the K9s for Warriors headquarters in Jacksonville Beach, Fla., where the veteran is an instructor.

with physical disabilities. It has declined to do that for PTSD service dogs, however, citing a lack of empirical evidence for their therapeutic value. The agency is now conducting a $12 million multiyear study on the topic, even as it opposes legislation that would require it to pay for dogs in a separate pilot program. “The numbers are startling on veteran suicides, and this is working,” says Rory Diamond, CEO of K9s for Warriors.

The organization’s fliers say “research proves” the dogs save lives. They cite a recent study out of Purdue University that used standard questionnaires to assess the mental health of 141 K9s for Warriors applicants, half teamed with a service dog and half on a waitlist. Those with dogs showed significantly lower levels of posttraumatic stress, depression and social isolation, with higher levels of psychological well-being. Still, lead author Maggie

nation+world France’s ex-president is charged with attempt to influence a judge PARIS France’s highest court on Thursday ordered former President Nicolas Sarkozy to stand trial for allegedly attempting to intervene in an investigation into his 2007 campaign finances. The charges — corruption and the abuse of influence — emerged as the latest twist in a tangled web of suspected wrongdoing that Sarkozy, France’s president between 2007 and 2012, has denied. They concern allegations that he attempted to sway a judge investigating him for possible campaign finance abuses.

SNAP, CRACKLE, POP

Shortly after he left office, French media, citing documents from Libyan archives, reported that Sarkozy may have accepted cash transfers of 50 million euros from the regime of sincedeceased dictator Moammar Gadhafi to finance his 2007 election campaign. A government probe was opened that year. As part of that inquiry, investigators monitored cellphones Sarkozy used to communicate with his attorney, Thierry Herzog. Those monitored phones revealed, in 2014, communications with a judge, Gilbert Azibert, to whom Sarkozy — planning a 2016 presidential run at the time — allegedly promised a plum position in Monaco in exchange for information about other pending

Cosby judge refuses request to step aside The judge in Bill Cosby’s sexual assault trial rejected demands Thursday from the comedian’s defense lawyers that he step aside because his wife is a social worker and advocate for assault victims. Judge Steven O’Neill said at a pretrial hearing that he’s “not biased or prejudiced” by his wife’s work and that the assertion that he shares the same views as his wife or has let his rulings be influenced by her profession “is faulty.” It was the defense’s final effort to postpone Cosby’s sexual assault retrial. that the secretly monitored communications should be deemed inadmissible in court. But in 2016, the nation’s highest judicial body rejected their appeal, clearing the way for him to stand trial. Sarkozy, 63, will now attempt to appeal the trial summons, his attorneys announced Thursday. Thursday’s order is only the latest in a rapidly multiplying list of charges against the former president. The Libya probe is ongoing, and Sarkozy was placed under formal investigation last week for allegedly accepting bribes and illegal campaign financing from Gadhafi’s regime. Sarkozy also is slated to stand trial for alleged campaign finance abuses in his 2012 re-election campaign.

Family under scrutiny before fatal cliff crash A family of two women and their six adopted children were presumed dead this week after their SUV plunged off a 100-foot cliff along a seaside California highway. The mysterious wreck was found Monday — three days after child welfare authorities were called to the Harts’ Washington state home to investigate possible abuse or neglect. Investigators have yet to determine the cause of the crash, and the sheriff said there is “no evidence and no reason to believe that this was an intentional act.” But he also said there were no skid marks and no sign the brakes were applied. Sharpton speaks at packed funeral for police shooting victim

Knuckle-crack puzzle solved? A new paper in the journal Scientific Reports purports to answer the age-old question of what, exactly, causes the sound of cracking knuckles. The New York Times reports that researchers at the Ecole Polytechnique in France have determined that the sound is — as some have long thought — caused by the collapse of a bubble in the joint’s synovial fluid. Media: Election turnout was around 40 percent

SACRAMENTO, CALIF. | The Rev. Al Sharpton speaks Thursday at the funeral of Stephon Clark, who was killed by police on March 18. With him stands Clark’s brother, Stevante. “We will never let you forget the name of Stephon Clark until we get justice,” Sharpton said. “This is about justice. This is about standing with people with courage.” City officials braced for more protests as mourners gathered at Bayside of South Sacramento Church.

Israel to restrict Gaza’s small Christian community from entering Israel for Easter, citing security reasons

The initial results of Egypt’s presidential election show a landslide win for President AbdelFattah el-Sissi, who faced no serious challenge, and a turnout hovering around 40 percent, pro-government media reported Thursday. Counting began after polls closed late Wednesday, wrapping up three days of voting. Egyptian authorities included financial incentives to bolster turnout in a bid to give the election legitimacy. Official results are expected on Monday. (AP)

NCAA TOURNAMENT | FINAL FOUR

Swaggering into Texas

With an opening weekend full of upsets and an Elite Eight that featured three teams seeded ninth or lower, this may be the most unpredictable March yet. That should give Loyola-Chicago confidence in the first Final Four game Saturday at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, where the Ramblers try to become the first No. 11 seed to make a national final. Here’s what you need to know. GABE HIATT (EXPRESS)

(11) Loyola-Chicago vs. (3) Michigan

(1) Kansas vs. (1) Villanova

6:09 p.m. Saturday, TBS

8:49 p.m. Saturday, TBS

How Loyola got here: Faith. The Ramblers (32-5) are in the Final Four for the second time in school history — they won a championship in 1963 — because of a self-belief that’s made them one of the most consistent teams in the country. A Dec. 6 upset over then-No. 5 Florida was an early sign of things to come for a team that features eight upperclassmen and five seniors.

How Michigan got here: Experience. John Beilein is in his 26th year of college coaching. In 11 years with the Wolverines, he’s led them to eight NCAA berths and the Final Four once before in 2013. Normally known for crisp passing and high-percentage shooting, Beilein’s team has a rugged persona with the eighth-best scoring defense in the country (63.1).

Player to watch: A different player has led Loyola in scoring in each of their four tournament games, but guard Ben Richardson has the hot hand after hitting 6-of-7 3-pointers for a game-high 23 points against Kansas State last week in the Elite Eight.

Player to watch: Moritz Wagner, a 6-foot-11 junior forward from Berlin, does a little bit of everything. He’s averaging 12.5 points per game in the tournament and has the best defensive rating of any Michigan starter this season (92.1 points per 100 possessions).

How Kansas got here: Shared the spotlight. In an unusually strong year for the Big 12, which had three teams in the Elite Eight, coach Bill Self has the league’s most talented team humming with a balanced roster that’s complemented its senior leaders, All-American point guard Devonte’ Graham and shooter Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk, with star sophomores Udoka Azubuike — a 7-footer who averages nearly two blocks per game — and Malik Newman. Player to watch: The light bulb has flipped on for Newman, a 6-3 transfer from Mississippi State who’s scored 77 points over his past three games.

Managers’ lessons for Martinez A string of postseason disappointments have led the Nationals to their fourth manager in seven years. Here’s what Dave Martinez can learn from his predecessors. (EXPRESS)

3 How Villanova got here: A little Philly toughness. This year’s team averages 86.6 points per game, more than 8 points better than the championship team from 2016. But coming up with stops has been its signature in tournament, where Villanova has held three of its four opponents to under 62 points, something they did only seven times in the regular season. This squad already boasts an NCAArecord 134 wins over four years. Player to watch: Jalen Brunson, who was named AP player of the year Thursday, scored 27 in a fastpaced Sweet 16 game against West Virignia, should thrive if Kansas wants to run with Villanova.

Bluster won’t help After Davey Johnson led the Nats to their first division title in 2012, he labeled 2013 “World Series or bust.” The team was second in the NL East and missed the playoffs. He wasn’t retained.

2 Awards won’t help Matt Williams was named NL manager of the year after leading the Nats to 96 wins in 2014. He was fired a year later, when he was exposed as a poor communicator and missed the postseason.

Bennett named coach of the year

Virginia’s Tony Bennett was named AP men’s basketball coach of the year Thursday after a season in which the Cavaliers set a program single-season record for wins, dominated the ACC and reached No. 1 in the AP Top 25 poll for the first time since the Ralph Sampson era. Bennett received 50 of the 65 votes submitted before the NCAA Tournament, where an opening loss to UMBC made Virginia the first No. 1 seed to ever lose to a 16. (AP) Women’s Final Four has all No. 1 seeds Friday on ESPN2; Louisville-Mississippi St. at 7, UConn-Notre Dame at 9

En route to Dusty Baker’s second straight NL East title, Mike Rizzo said he was confident Baker would be back in 2017. A first-round defeat aided by poor bullpen management led to his exit.

NATIONALS AT REDS | 4:10 P.M. TODAY, MASN

Healthy and ‘ready’ to fire first pitch

NATIONALS On Tuesday morning, before his team’s final tuneup before opening day, Max Scherzer hosted his final preseason media scrum of the spring. He was asked if he’ll have jitters against the Reds in the

opener (yes, but he’ll be more anxious than nervous), if the chilly Cincinnati climate will affect him (no, he pitched in Detroit for five years), and if his daughter’s birth in November changed his perspective on the game (no, but there are more late nights). Finally, he was asked how he thought he fared in spring training. His answer was pointed. “You don’t ... rate spring training,” he said. “It’s either are you

Unlike last spring, Max Scherzer reported to camp healthy this year.

ready or are you not. I’m ready.” That decisiveness was absent last year, when Scherzer didn’t pitch in an exhibition game until March 22. When he finally did pitch, he threw three-fingered

fastballs to avoid aggravating a knuckle fracture. The ailment didn’t force him to the disabled list, but it did push his first start to the Nationals’ fourth game, where he allowed two runs

Reports: Cardinals agree to 1-year, $14M deal with All-Star closer Greg Holland, who had 41 saves for Rockies last year

in Philadelphia and began a path to a 2.51 ERA and a second straight NL Cy Young Award. There were no reservations hanging over Scherzer this spring. He reported to camp healthy. He made six Grapefruit League starts, giving up three runs in his first four, then 10 runs — including four homers — in his final two. Having taking the exhibition time to hone different aspects of his craft, Scherzer is looking forward to games that matter. “Things are different when it’s the regular season,” Scherzer said. “Lights are on. Everybody grips the bat a little bit tighter. This is when everything gets real.” JORGE CASTILLO (THE WASHINGTON POST)

Organizing a Housewarming Party

f you don’t know where to start when planning a housewarming party, check out these tips!

Who to Invite Your neighbors, of course! Even if you don’t know anyone in your neighborhood, this is a great opportunity to break the ice. To make your guest list a little more familiar, you could even invite a few friends and family members. Try and keep the list of people you are inviting short and sweet. It’s probably not the best idea to have too crowded a house warming party. This will allow you to have time to mingle and introduce yourself to all your guests. Send out your invitations weeks in advance to ensure that your guests will have plenty of time to either RSVP or decline.

Make Your Home Warm & Cozy If your home doesn’t look cozy or at least

somewhat comfortable from the moment you walk through the front door, it’s time to do some decorating! Add some cozy blankets to the couches, along with pillows on di΍erent seating options. Centerpieces on tables and a few good books here and there can really work wonders as well. Even a simple welcome mat at your front door can make a di΍erence between cozy and bland.

Clean up Time If you just moved into your new home, you probably have some unpacking to do. Recycle any moving boxes you may have laying around and put things where they need to go. To be safe, vacuum the room(s) you will be hosting the housewarming party in.

Food If you are a cook, shoot for the stars and cook your own food for the party. If not, head down to your local grocery store and pick up

some food like vegetable or fruit trays, frozen appetizers, pre-made desserts, etc. Try to have a variety of foods; you never know what types of food your guests are into. If you decide to cook, try to cook the day before the party to save time.

The Day Of Before your neighbors, family, and friends start to arrive, make sure things are tidy around the house and set up the food. When your guests arrive, greet them and be sure to introduce yourself. If you want to take it a step further, give everyone who attends name tags to wear, or have them write their names on the cup they are using for the duration of the party. This way, it will be easier to remember everyone’s names. First impressions are everything! No matter how many people you invite, be sure to mingle around and try and talk to everyone at least once. Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) spends most of his time inside a virtual reality world, which explains why his room is such a mess.

Spielberg’s virtual reality-set ‘Ready Player One’ is heavy on nostalgia, video games FILM REVIEW The Oasis — the virtual reality universe in which much of Steven Spielberg’s “Ready Player One” takes place, and where the population of its dystopian world escapes from the misery of real life by donning digital avatars — is, in the words of its creator, “full of the things that people love.” You may be one of the people who loves “Ready Player One,” or you may not. But it will not be because of a lack of stuff to love. The pop culture detritus of the late 20th century — specifically, the Reagan years — is crammed into the Oasis. References to the Atari 2600, Buckaroo Banzai, “Back to the Future,” King Kong, “The Iron Giant,” a Rubik’s Cube and Stanley Kubrick’s “The

Shining” swirl in a soup teeming with forgotten trash and fondly remembered treasures. Set in 2045 in a decaying part of Columbus, Ohio, “Ready Player One” follows Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan), a teenage geek who spends most of his free time inside the Oasis. There, he appears as his digitized doppelganger: a platinum-haired version of his aspirational self called Parzival (after the Arthurian hero who quested for the Holy Grail). Here, Parzival’s quarry is something equally elusive: a digital artifact — in gamingspeak, an Easter egg — that has been hidden inside the Oasis by its late creator, James Halliday (Mark Rylance), whose fortune

will be inherited by whoever finds it. Assisting Wade/Parzival in his mission are Samantha, aka the pixieish, anime-eyed avatar Art3mis (Olivia Cooke), and three gamers Wade knows only as avatars. This tension — between the real world and the digital one — provides much of the nuance,

to the extent that there is any, in “Ready Player One.” “Reality is a bummer,” someone says. But like “Blade Runner 2049,” it’s ironically in the dingy, dirty real world that the most engaging parts of the film take place. Co-written by Ernest Cline, who wrote the original 2011 book, the story is a fairly straightforward digital scavenger hunt: part “Tron” and part “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” An evil corporate titan bent on world domination (Ben Mendelsohn) is the requisite, cliched bad guy. Whether you love or hate this movie will depend on how you feel about video games — not just as narrative, but as art. MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN

An unrestored 70 mm print of Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece “2001: A Space Odyssey” is coming to select U.S. theaters in May in celebration of the film’s 50th anniversary. Warner Bros. says that the cut, created from the original camera negative, will allow audiences to experience the film as they did upon its release in 1968. It will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 12 before launching in select U.S. theaters May 18. Steven Spielberg For Steven Spielberg, “Ready Player One” was an escape from reality as he worked on it for three years (alongside “Bridge of Spies” and “The Post”). It “fulfilled all of my fantasies of the places I go in my imagination when I get out of town,” he says. LINDSEY BAHR (AP)

You kept references to your own films to a minimum here. I kept it to a dull roar by not putting everything in the kitchen sink in there. There were so many [other] contributors to the culture of the 1980s. This movie celebrates nostalgia, but are we too fixated on the past? I wish there was more focus on the past. Social media has ... triggered a sort of critical mass of contemporary, almost panic to be included in the conversation globally.

3 GOOD QUESTIONS

What do you think of virtual reality? I love VR. I’m not yet certain how I could make a movie in VR because I don’t have as much control over where the audience is looking. I would have to be clever to get them to pay attention to where I want them to pay attention.

Raleigh (Asa Butterfield) discovers war’s harsh realities in “Journey’s End.”

In this journey, the destination is grim FILM REVIEW “Journey’s End,” a 1928 play by British scribe R.C. Sherriff, isn’t well known to American audiences, but it’s been part of the English repertory for generations. The story of a group of soldiers and officers tensely awaiting an oncoming offensive during a particularly bloody spate of trench warfare during World War I, this taut, emotionally wrenching snapshot of both the mythologies and grim realities of war possesses useful reminders about self-deception and abuse of power. Director Saul Dibb gracefully translates the optimism and excruciating suffering portrayed in “Journey’s End” to the screen, enlisting a cast of fine actors to embody varying permutations of trauma, denial and the shaded fundamentals of brute survival. The audience’s guide is a young, wide-eyed recruit named Raleigh (Asa Butterfield), who has pulled strings so that he can join a company in France led by an old school chum named Stanhope (Sam Claflin). When Raleigh arrives, he is greeted by the muck and hopelessness of the trench, where boredom is punctuated only by cigarettes, cups of tea and moments of stark terror. Here, he finds his old friend “Stanno” dealing with

the pressure by drinking heavily and cruelly lashing out. Raleigh finds a far calmer mediating presence in Osborne, a gentle, impeccably mannered gentleman, magnificently portrayed by Paul Bettany, who personifies the concept of courage as unwavering grace under pressure. An “Upstairs/Downstairs” class critique pervades, as generals dine on fine wine and fish while blithely dispatching hundreds of young men to sure death. Time is perhaps the most important character in “Journey’s End,” which is structured around a six-day hitch in northern France, but hinges on a particularly thorny mission whose outcome is no less devastating for its being utterly predictable. Its poetic title notwithstanding, the film suggests that, flowery invocations of glory, brotherhood and bravery aside, every foxhole is its own kind of grave. ANN HORNADAY (THE WASHINGTON POST)

“Kramer accidentally votes for Trump when his Google Glasses malfunction.”

@BENCOCCIO AND @HASHTAGGRISWOLD, joining in a Twitter debate about which characters from hit ‘90s sitcoms would have voted for Trump, after Roseanne reveals she is a Trump supporter in the first episode of the ABC reboot. Though many on Twitter were convinced that all four “Seinfeld” leads would have voted for Trump, there was a split over where Ross Geller of “Friends” stood. Some said he would have voted for Trump because he’s the worst, but others said the paleontologist and ardent fact-checker never would have backed the president.

“Still can’t believe I’m one of the first males in history to be a [professional] NFL cheerleader!” @NAPOLEONJINNIES, tweeting his reaction to being named to the Los

Angeles Rams’ cheerleading squad. Jinnies and Quinton Peron were named two of the 40 members of the Rams squad after auditioning along with 74 others. Though most NFL teams have male stuntmen, the Rams became the first to have male dancers in its cheering squad.

Fill in each column, row and 3x3 box with the digits 1 through 9 without repeating any. The twist in Samurai Sudoku is that the digits that appear in the overlapping boxes must work for both puzzles. A piece of advice to get you started: Don’t focus on completing one grid at a time. Keep the whole puzzle in mind as you go, because filling in a number in one grid could give you clues to another.

‘I’m fine,’ says Ben, sucking in his stomach

Trump pumps Roseanne for ratings tips President Trump called Roseanne Barr to congratulate her after the debut of her “Roseanne” reboot drew more than 18 million viewers. “It was pretty exciting,” Barr said Thursday on “Good Morning America.” Both the real and fictional Roseannes support the president. “I’ve known him for many years, and he’s done a lot of nice things for me over the years. It was just a friendly conversation about work and television and ratings.” (AP/EXPRESS)

On Thursday, Ben Affleck responded to a New Yorker article that poked fun at photos of him on a beach. “I’m doing just fine,” the actor tweeted. “Thick skin bolstered by garish tattoos.” It was the first time Affleck addressed the widely mocked phoenix tattoo that covers his back. In her New Yorker piece “The Great Sadness of Ben Affleck,” author Naomi Fry wrote, “His gut is pooching outward in a way that, in a more enlightened country like, say, France, would perhaps be considered virile, not unlike the lusty Gerard Depardieu in his prime but, in fitness-fascist America, tends to read as Homer Simpsonesque.” (EXPRESS)

Rapper DMX was sentenced Wednesday to a year in prison for evading $1.7 million in taxes. The sentence in Manhattan federal court came after the judge agreed to listen to DMX’s hit “Slippin’,” which defense attorneys said showed a man who knew what it was like to come back after bottoming out. DMX has been behind bars since January. (AP)

Travis Scott has been hit with a lawsuit for canceling a Minneapolis concert scheduled to take place just two days after the birth of his daughter with Kylie Jenner. According to The Blast, PJAM Entertainment sued Scott, claiming he was paid $150,000 as an advance on a $200,000 paycheck for the show. PJAM is seeking the return of its $150,000 advance, plus “reputational damages.”
